Christmas Spirit Past, Present, and Future

A

very Merry Christmas and Joyous Holiday Season to all! “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16. This should bring joy to your heart, a smile to your face, and provide you inner peace. This is the true meaning of “Christmas Spirit.” At a time when the world has never been more complicated, the answer can be found in the greatest father-son story ever told. I was very blessed to sit down with Father John Manno a few years back and would like to share some of his thoughts about Christmas and the arrival of the baby Jesus. The message he wanted me to share with all, “Experience Christmas, the contemplation of God to come amongst us. It is a most joyous time to celebrate the importance of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and how God sent his only son to the mortal world to provide us everlasting life. All beginning with the innocence and vulnerability of having a baby born in a manger.” Father Manno always encouraged everybody to live Christmas. “To understand and experience the love of God and his only son. How Mary

and Joseph, who were two migrants, accepted our Lord and cared for him unconditionally. Joseph being his stepfather, loved him like his own. I think this is a message for all families — no matter of their makeup. When God comes into our life, we realize the importance of each other, and how we are all truly one.” Father Manno was always a champion for equality and diversity and wanted everybody to understand that “Jesus came to the world for everyone, the wise men were Kings from three different cultures, Jesus was truly sent to unite the world in the name of God. Celebrate the realness of God’s gift of Emmanuel every day, not just on Christmas.” Father had a great way of balancing and embracing Santa Claus and Saint Nicklaus, the beloved Patron Saint of Children. He completely understood how Santa and St. Nicklaus represent a magical time of a child’s life and the spirit of Christmas. If you would like to read my complete Christmas past sitdown with Father John “A Christmas Blessing and Story…” it can be found on our website. A tip of my Santa hat to all the good girls and boys that entered our annual Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships

Christmas Fun Coloring Contest. They all did a tremendous job; I’ve never seen so much glitter and creative design. The effort the young folks put into the contest could put a smile on the Grinch’s Jim face. A special thanks Webb, Jr. to my Editor Steph, and her team of Elves for organizing and judging all the kids’ work. What a difficult job. The winners and every child’s name that entered can be found in the pages ahead. I wish I had the power of Santa — they all would win! It is the most wonderful time of the year to be young. Thank you to all that do so much to make sure every child has something under the tree and on the Christmas table. We are truly blessed to live in our very caring and generous neck of Penns Woods. Make sure to pass this spirit on to your own children. It’s a great way to show a living example of doing some good in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I must take a moment to keep alive the memory of my good friend Dave Sechler. He had over four decades of service to The Salvation Army and our

local community. I still miss seeing his big smile at the Salvation Army’s gym and ringing the bell wherever needed. The Salvation Army has done such a great job providing so much for so many this year; there is no better way to honor Dave than a last-minute Red Kettle donation. From now until the end of the year, I will have a Red Kettle set up in the front of my office; if you would like to make a donation, my staff and I will match your contribution. Any stories you would like to share about Dave when you drop in would be greatly appreciated. If you feel more comfortable mailing it in, anything postmarked by the end of the year will be matched. I am a big believer in Dave’s efforts, The Salvation Army, and the money being kept here and used locally. In closing, we recently lost a very dear member of our extended Webb Weekly family. Heartfelt thoughts, prayers, and condolences to the Hunsinger family. Lou Sr. went home to the Lord this past week. He was truly one of the good guys who gave his lifetime to serving our Nation and we the people, through public service. He will be dearly missed. Have a safe and Happy Holiday Season. Please make sure no one goes forgotten about and share the true Spirit of Christmas. God Bless America.

ell y’all. I did it! I managed to finish all my shopping! Wrapping is in the works, groceries are on the schedule and if you believe ANY of that you are crazy! Snowmageddon threw a wrench in the plans and the ‘Rona ain’t helping things either, and that batch of sauce that I somehow overcooked was a pain, but I’m sure I’ll get everything done…right? I am so excited to announce the winners of the Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships Christmas Coloring Contest! It was no easy task judging all the amazing entries that were submitted this year. Once again, I have to thank Frosty Nippymitten, Cherry Sparklepie, and Sprinkles Hollyhat for their hard work. They were all great helps in getting all the entries sorted, filed and judged. As for

hristmas 1941 comes to a world where there is scant peace, where men search the skies for portents not of joy but of death, and where men of goodwill are, as were the simple

Judean shepherds long ago, “sore afraid.” Happily, there is no blackout of the Christmas star here—no shrieking sirens to interrupt joyful music of Christmastide, no bursting of bombs. Yet our rejoicing is not without an undertone of fear. All

is in every land, in every tongue, in every creed, the spirit of Christmas. Although clouded by the hates of war, twisted and tortured by centuries of man’s efforts to accommodate the divine message to their own ideals, the song which the herald angels sang over Bethlehem remains the goal toward which enlightened human leadership has always striven. No darkness has ever been black enough to extinguish the wonderful light that was kindled that night long ago in a stable in Bethlehem.

are hoping for the best, anticipating eventual triumph of right, but not without realization that the future is clouded. The spirit of Christmas, however, does not die—not in any land, but among the adherents of any creed, not forever in the human heart. When the spirit of Christmas is abroad the narrower boundaries of religion and race fall away. “Glory to God in the Highest!” sang the angel, “and on earth goodwill toward men” Ancient and profound, this emotion,

A Tribute to Lou Hunsinger Sr. By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

his story is both the hardest and easiest story that I have ever written. Last week, my father, Lou Hunsinger Sr., died after a long illness. Thankfully he did not suffer. It is difficult to adequately express what he meant to my family, me, and his community. My dad was an unabashed American patriot who was fiercely proud of his country, its flag, and all that both stand for. Whenever the flag passed at the parades or events that he helped at, he always stood a little straighter to show his respect. He was very proud of his service in the U.S. Air Force. He would regale us with stories of his time stationed at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia — at a time when that part of the world was considered a backwater (1954-1955). It didn’t seem to have the strategic importance that it has today. His greatest thrill in the Air Force was riding in a helicopter with General James H. Doolittle, who led the famous “Doolittle Raid”

against Tokyo in April 1942. He was interviewing Doolittle for the base newspaper at Ellington Air Force Base, near Houston. (Maybe that is how I got my journalistic bent.) Anyway, my dad was awed by Doolittle’s presence. He told my dad not to be so nervous. Doolittle said he was glad to give the interview and hoped it would be interesting to the readers. If it were not for my dad’s Air Force service, I might not be here. He met my mother while serving at Gary Air Force Base in San Marcos, Texas. She attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now Texas State University) there in San Marcos. In his professional life, he spent 30 years selling life insurance for the Baltimore Life Insurance Company (Life of Maryland). For him, those years produced many great friendships. The people he sold policies to were more than just policyholders; they were his friends. Whenever he had to deal with a death claim, he always went to their homes

in-person to help them and console them in their time of loss. Their loss of a family member was also a loss of a friend to him. Sometimes my mom, my sisters, and I wondered why he wasn’t home every evening and sometimes on weekends, but it was because he was tending to clients’ needs (his friends). I only am now appreciating why that was so special. My dad was uncommonly passionate about the concept of community service and doing things for others.

He told me and many others that, “Helping out others is the rent you pay for living in your community.” Interestingly, Muhammad Ali said something similar many years after my dad tried to teach that concept to me and my sisters, and anybody who would listen. Ali said, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room on earth.” I told that quote to my dad, and he said, “That’s exactly what I’ve been telling you kids all these years. Help make your community a

better place than it was when you got there.” I would say that my dad amply paid his rent. My dad was also zealous in ensuring that the volunteers he led as Williamsport Emergency Management Agency director were taken care of while helping out at a fire or disaster scene or a race or some other activity. He made sure they had plenty of food and coffee, and refreshments while they were out doing their jobs. He would often, cheerfully, take money from his own pocket to make sure their needs were

adequately met. He said they were the heart and soul of what he did and what he believed in. Each year he paid for a nice Christmas party to show his appreciation for their efforts during the year. I can’t talk about my dad without mentioning his service with the Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Department during the last 20-plus years of his life. He valued the time he spent volunteering with the fine men and women of that department. He loved acting as a greeter at their

His insurance activities weren’t the only thing that took him away. Sometimes on weekends and during the evening, his involvement with the Civil Air Patrol would take him out to search for a lost hunter or airplane. He would assist with training missions and at plane crashes, securing the site for FAA investigators. I remember well the one time he had to come off of a training mission to take me to the hospital because I had appendicitis. He was still clad in his fatigues. Other vivid memories of his CAP service came in 1965 and 1967, and both involved airline crashes. I was attending Camp Big Bear, a day camp run by the local YMCA. Both times the day session had ended, and he had to hurriedly scoop me up and then drop me off while he rushed off to the crash sites. It was kind of exciting, but it must have been a little stressful for him. And perhaps strikingly, he was out at another plane

crash — this one near Huntersville — when my sister, Kathleen, was born in 1958. My dad had to call one of his good friends to take my mom to the hospital to give birth. I have a lot to live up to bearing my father’s name. I hope I can continue to live up to the high ideals that he lived his life by. Instead of looking at that as a burden, I welcome the challenge. My dad was not a dad like Ward Cleaver from “Leave It to Beaver,” but my sisters and I didn’t need that. We were perfectly happy to have him the way he was. I’d like to close by quoting from a poignant country song by Vince Gill called, “Go Rest High Up on That Mountain.” Go rest high on that mountain Son, your work on earth is done. Go to heaven a-shoutin’ Love for the Father and the Son. Oh, how we cried the day you left us We gathered round your grave to grieve. I wish I could see the angels faces When they hear your sweet voice sing.

Dreaming of a White Christmas

id you know that chopping down the Christmas tree represents the death of Jesus Christ and putting it back up represents the resurrection of Christ? Did you know that the wreaths we hang as a beautiful welcome for friends and family walking into our homes are circles that represent eternity? Those yummy peppermint candy canes

were made to look like shepherd hooks and the colors, red Jesus blood, white purity. The gifts represent the three gifts the wise men brought baby Jesus. So, when you are running around trying to find the “perfect gift,” stop yourself, take a deep breath and remember, we have been given the perfect gift. Jesus Christ was given to us to remove all our sins. Jesus is the reason for

the season, and what a day to celebrate and rejoice! I can hardly believe the day we have all prepared for, and anxiously waiting for will be here in just a Andrea few days. Christmas McElroy morning is always so magical. As I sit here writing this in the dark with my tree lit, listening to “Away in a Manger” by Alan Jackson playing in the background and watching it snow, I can’t help but wonder — will the snow still be here for Christmas Day? See, for weeks, and I mean weeks, I prayed every morning for snow. Before my feet hit the floor, I pray. Give thanks and praise to be living another glorious day. I may have slipped a few “Lord, it’s been a real kind of crappy year. Can I just ask you to bring us a white Christmas please? An inch to foot, I’ll be so happy. Thanks Lord.” Well, I must have been a good girl because he sent me about 2 feet!!

God is so good, and I felt like a little kid just waiting for this storm. Christmas snow is just so magical, and when you know God sent it, just for you, I mean, MERRY CHRISTMAS ANDREA!! Ok, Ok. I am sure I am not the only person who prayed for snow, but I believe its God’s attempt to make this dirty world look clean. Waking up to snow on Christmas!? It’s like your very own Hallmark movie. Snow or no snow on Christmas morning, (which I am sure this snow will still be here)our day will be filled with Joy and Magic. Watching Christmas through my children’s eyes and seeing the happiness on their little faces while walking out to the tree is just about the best feeling in the world. Dad and Momma have to check the tree first, to make sure Santa came and get everything turned on. It’s tradition that my parents always did too. Then, at Christmas breakfast we sing Happy Birthday to Jesus too, so we never forget the true meaning of Christmas.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? VIRGINIA O’HANLON. 115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET.

V

IRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of

truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most

that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Faith Conversations…

Aim for Greatness

F

or many leaders, the run-up to the year 2020 provided a rather unique play-on-word metaphor to focus on the topic of vision. Vision is crucial for every organization because it provides a view of the future that is better than the past. Effective leaders know that leading a passionate and successful organization requires a compelling vision of the future. Proverbs 29:18 KJV says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish”. Why? Because vision provides the hope that pulls us through the bad times

and inspires us to greatness. Vision provides the passion for discipline, determination, and sacrifice. How? By causing us to believe we can make a difference, that we can make things better, that we can overcome. But the events of year 2020 exposed two major flaws in the vision 20/20 metaphor. First, our vision is only going to get worse, not better. When an eye-chart test reveals that you have 20/20 vision, it means that you can see what the average person can see

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE WAY YOUR LEGS LOOK, BUT HOW THEY FEEL

Do you have restless legs? Do your legs feel tired, achy and ‘heavy’ by the end of the day? Do you get swelling, itching or tingling of the legs as the day goes on? Do you have varicose or spider veins? All of these symptoms can be caused by venous insufficiency.

from 20 feet away. That’s good. If you have 20/10 vision, you can see at 20 feet what the average person can see from 10 feet. That’s great! And vice versa, 20/30 vision means you can see at 20 feet what the average person can see at 30 feet. Tim That’s bad. Hartzell Do you see the flaw? In the 20/20 vision metaphor, our vision will actually keep getting worse. In 2021 it will be worse than in 2020. In 2030, it will be even worse, as it will in 2040, and 2050, and it will keep getting worse for as far as the eye can see. Pun intended. The second flaw is this: No one is inspired by average. Average vision is good, but it’s not good enough. When hunting, I have a scope on my gun and binoculars around my neck. Why? Because I want great vision when the buck of a lifetime is standing two hundred yards away. Success requires great vision. What good is average eyesight when the moment of truth presents itself? Not much good at all. But even with its flaws, the 20/20 vision metaphor inadvertently revealed a couple of important truths: First, things are going to get worse.

It’s inevitable. Like eyesight, our broken bodies are failing — and so is the world around us. Anyone who thinks that the future is going to be better than the past is fooling themselves. It’s not. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the longer you live on this planet, the worse things will get. Does that disappoint you? It shouldn’t, and here’s why: The second truth revealed by the metaphor is that we can do something about our worsening condition. If you can’t get a good look at that buck, then pull up your binoculars. You don’t have to settle for good eyesight - you can make it great! Listen, most of us would say that life before the pandemic was good. In fact, we didn’t realize how good it was until the pandemic took it away. But let me ask you, was good, good enough? Hasn’t the shutdown caused you to question what we were doing before it hit? Was your marriage great? Was your parenting great? Was your performance on the job great? Was your diet great? Was your exercise plan great? Was your spiritual life great? Was your church great? Life was good back then, but were we settling for good when we could have been aiming for great? In his book, Good to Great, Jim Collins writes: Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don’t

when gravity is determined to pull you down? If the year ahead is going to be better than the year that was, it is going to be because you were aiming for something better. Doing so requires discipline, determination, and perseverance. Regardless of what lies ahead in 2021, if you are aiming for greatness, you will do better. Early in the pandemic I came across this quote, “If a crisis leaves you alive, it’s so that you can be better prepared lead and serve others in the next crisis.” Friend, if you can’t find the gumption to aim at greatness for yourself, then do it so that you can be better prepared to lead and serve others. This pandemic isn’t the last crisis we will face. If we’re going to do better in the next one, then it will be because we were aiming for greatness when it hit. Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore, I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. I Corinthians 9:24-27.

have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don’t have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life. Ouch, that hurts. If 2020 has taught me anything, it’s that good should never be good enough. Life before the pandemic was good, but why would we want to go back to good when we can launch forward into great? The pandemic has provided us with a unique opportunity to be jolted out of our good lives and propelled forward into greatness. It’s an opportunity unlike any other, so I encourage you to make the most of it. Christian, were you settling for good before the pandemic hit? Pastor and church leader, were you settling for good in God’s mission? Husband and wife, were you settling for good in your marriage and family? Regardless of who you are or what you do, ask yourself, “Was I settling for good when I could have been aiming for great?” Please don’t misunderstand my intent. I’m not suggesting that aiming for greatness means gaining wealth or fame or power. Achieving greatness is out of our control. All I’m asking is this: Are you aiming for greatness? Are you willing to make sacrifices to advance your life beyond average? Are you willing to lead your life upward

overnor Wolf tested positive for COVID, and it illustrates two things very clearly; the shutdowns don’t work, and the shutdowns need to be made stricter. The simple truth is that yet again; we can look at a cup of water and see it half empty and half full at the same time. I would not wish COVID on my worst enemy, and I am thankful that the governor has not reported any symptoms. But if there should have been one person in the

what they called the Great Barrington Declaration (https://gbdeclaration.org). Reader alert! This declaration has been absolutely disparaged by ‘experts’ for everything but bad grammar. A Google search will reveal at least twenty times more ‘anti’ Barrington Declaration hits than those for it. To read these critics, it would seem that these three epidemiologists were total idiots. The thousands of other medical experts from worldwide who have signed the declaration and have translated this document into 41 different languages are all a bunch of fools. What are they proposing that is so controversial? “As infectious disease epidemiologists and public health scientists, we have grave concerns about the damaging physical and mental health impacts of

the prevailing COVID-19 policies and recommend an approach we call Focused Protection. Coming from both the left and right and around the world, we have devoted our careers to protecting people. Current lockdown policies are producing devastating effects on short and long-term public health. Those who are not vulnerable should immediately be allowed to resume life as normal. Simple hygiene measures, such as hand washing and staying home when sick, should be practiced by everyone to reduce the herd immunity threshold. Schools and universities should be open for in-person teaching. Extracurricular activities, such as sports, should be resumed. Young, low-risk adults should work normally, rather than from home. Restaurants and other businesses should

open. Arts, music, sport, and other cultural activities should resume. People who are more at risk may participate if they wish, while society as a whole enjoys the protection conferred upon the vulnerable by those who have built up herd immunity.” (excerpts from “The Great Barrington Declaration”). Can we not at least look in a different direction rather than continue to shut down everything that does not move and wait, wait, wait until we get the ‘all clear’ sign. I have contacted the governor about the Great Barrington Declaration and asked him to reconsider the draconian actions than he has again instituted. I would encourage anyone who shares these same concerns to do the same (https://www.governor.pa.gov/ contact).

Governor Tom Wolf. He would obviously have the advantage of every precaution that could be taken. Somehow, though, the virus was able to penetrate all these screenings. But yet again, as the number of cases rose, Governor Wolf defaulted to stricter control measures throughout the state. Many believe that this is the only alternative, but could there be a different option other than one that causes tremendous economic hardship for everyone? Yes, and it is not a reactionary, right-wing diatribe but a strategy developed by three of the world’s leading epidemiologists; Dr. Sunetra Gupta of Oxford University, Dr. Martin Kuldorff of Harvard University, and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya of Stanford University. These three met in early October in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and developed

ou may know the beloved Christmas carol, We Three Kings, was originally titled Three Kings of Orient. You may also know it was sometimes known as We Three Kings of Orient Are and The Quest of the Magi and that it was written in 1857 by John Henry Hopkins Jr. What you probably do not know, however, is that Hopkins served as the rector of Christ Episcopal Church on Mulberry Street in Williamsport, Pennsylvania from 1876 to 1887. John Henry Hopkins, Jr. was born in Pittsburgh on October 28, 1820. His father was a well-respected Bishop who was also a talented musician, painter, poet, and author of many books on religion. Hopkins shared his father’s talents in writing and music but was not immediately drawn to the

church. After graduating from the University of Vermont, Hopkins worked as a reporter in New York City while also studying law. Around this time, he decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and go into ministry. Hopkins went on to study at the General Theological Seminary in New York where he was ordained as a deacon in 1850. In 1872, John Henry Hopkins, Jr. would be ordained a priest and go on to serve parishes in Pennsylvania and New York. Hopkins even delivered the eulogy at the funeral of Ulysses S. Grant, American soldier and 18th president of the United States. Although Hopkins is most remembered for his famous Christmas carol, he was much more accomplished than most people might realize. The third of eleven children and oldest son, John Henry Hopkins, Jr. was

We Three Kings: We three kings of Orient are; bearing gifts we traverse afar, field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star. O star of wonder, star of light, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, gold I bring to crown Him again, King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign. O star of wonder, star of light,

star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. Frankincense to offer have I; incense owns a Deity nigh; prayer and praising, voices raising, worshiping God on high. O star of wonder, star of light, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb. O star of wonder, star of light, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light. Glorious now behold him arise; King and God and sacrifice: Alleluia, Alleluia, sounds through the earth and skies. O star of wonder, star of light, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.

was the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! “Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of

myself! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

fabrics from the year’s past projects and sew up your own DIY wrapping cloths and gift bags. Naturally, during this season, one of my favorite things is brown-paper packages wrapped up with string. That’s why I love the idea of gifts wrapped in butcher paper and trimmed with simple jute twine. You can find both on Amazon with 2-day Prime shipping, and buying in bulk is budget friendly. Brown paper is suitable for all gift-giving occasions, not just Christmas. You can personalize and decorate presents by writing or coloring on the paper, so no need for gift tags! Of course, it’s the thought that counts with any gift, but why not make that thought as pretty, cute, and elegant as can be with creative and thoughtful wrapping. You can wrap each gift according to type of gift or assign each recipient on your gift list their own individualized paper, like plum fairies for baby sister and reindeer for Uncle Fred. Or, wrap all of your gifts in the same paper with or without a theme. Trim with standard ribbon and bows, or experiment with avant-garde finishings like holly springs, toy cars, or barrettes. If you’re wondering what to give the person that already has everything they need, consider donating in their name to a charity that is close to their hearts.

find organizationally minded stocking stuffers like USB chargers, pencil cases, and earbud cleaning kits. And while you’re at it, throw a few storage tubs into your virtual cart for bins to put away all of the old stuff that will be replaced by the new stuff Santa’s bringing. If you’re looking to add even more whimsy to the season, check out Anthropologie’s wrapping paper options. They have rolls in wintry florals, Scandinavian-inspired prints, and traditional Christmas motifs. Also on offer are two-toned and craft wrapping paper. If you hate messing about with tape, then consider tying up gifts with their colorful holiday wrapping cloth. Plus, they even have gift kits with tags, mini-wreaths, and pom-poms, with paper, cotton, and velvet ribbons to make your present that extra special. I love the idea of wrapping cloth in general. It’s unexpected, creative, and sustainable, as it’s ideal for reuse. No more shouts from grandma to “save the paper!” The cloth itself can be part of the gift. For an even greener approach, check out World Market’s upcycled fabric gift wrap, which is made from apparel scraps and can be re-utilized as tea towels, handkerchiefs, napkins, or surface covers. If you’re feeling super crafty, you can gather your own leftover

The Bookworm Sez – Holiday Gift Guide Part 2 By Terri Schlichenmeyer

T

he holidays this year are going to be, well, unique. Some family members won’t be there. Others are coming, regardless of whatever’s going on in the country. Still others are sending their regards and a box of presents, which is something you might do, too. And here’s the good news: books are easy to wrap, easy to box, and easy to ship. Why not try one of these great books for that person who can’t make it to your table this holiday season? GIFTY BOOKS Your giftee who loves “Strange Planet” comics

will whoop when they open the gift with “Strange Planner” by Nathan W. Pyle inside. Yes, this is a planner, or a diary, or a journal, or just a way to make notes, keep memories, and have fun. Make it a better gift by wrapping “Greetings From Strange Planet,” Pyle’s collection of postcards, in the same snazzy gift package. Don’t forget “Stranger Planet,” for more alien fun. If you’re on the search for a gifty-type book for a dog lover, look for “Dog Mom: A Love Story” by Isabel Serna. It’s a cute, quick read about dogs, canines, and our love for them. The giftee who loves all kinds of animals will love to see “A Guinea Pig Night Before Christmas” in

Our Focus is Your Vision

For the littlest giftee who’s just learning their ABCs, there are two great options: superhero fans will love “T is for Thor: A Norse Mythology Alphabet” by Virginia Loh-Hagan, illustrated by Torstein Nordstrand. Pair it up with the slightly gentler “H is for Honey Bee: A Beekeeping Alphabet” by Robbyn Smith van Frankenhuyzen, illustrated by Eileen Ryan Ewen. These are A B-U-tiful pair of gifts. For the kid who loves to sing and dance, or the child who loves silly poetry, Dan Brown’s “Wild Symphony” is a great book to give. Written by the “The DaVinci Code” author, this is a book of poetry with kid-friendly inspirational sidebars, and it comes with a free app so your child can follow along, musically. Little animal lovers might also like “Memoirs of a Tortoise” by Devin Scillian, illustrated by Tim Bowers. It’s a clever, sad, and oh-so-sweet

tale of a long and wonderful life and loss and love again. Pair it with “Tails from the Animal Shelter” by Stephanie Shaw, illustrated by Liza Woodruff, a book about pets for adoption, pets looking for a new home, pets your child could love. What do you get your favorite little horse lover? This: “The True Story of Zippy Chippy, The Little Horse That Couldn’t” by Artie Bennett, illustrated by Dave Szalay. It’s the tale of a racehorse who didn’t race. Who would ever love him then? Farm kids and kids who love to visit farms will adore “Prairie Days” by Patricia MacLachlan, the story of being in the country. Kids will love it; you’ll enjoy the artwork by Micha Archer. Pair it with “This Land is Your Land,” words and music by Woody Guthrie, artwork from Kathy Jakobsen.

For the “I Don’t Wanna” kinda kid, “Otis P. Oliver Protests” by Keri Claiborne Boyle, illustrated by Daniel Duncan is perfect this holiday. It’s the tale of a boy who hates baths and will go to unusual lengths to avoid them. Wrap it up with “Christopher Pumpkin” by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet, illustrated by Nick East. It’s about a little boy pumpkin who’s not your usual scare! Since the littlest person on your gift list loves to hear stories about other kids, “A World Together” by Sonia Manzano would make a great gift this year. Written by Sesame Street’s “Maria,” this book is from the National Geographic folks, so you know it’s full of great photos from around the world, too. Wrap it up with “Our Favorite Day of the Year” by A.E. Ali, illustrated by Rahele Jomepour Bell, a

the package, too. Stocking stuffers unite! Here are two books for your pop-culture maven: first, “Everything is Terrible” by Matthew DiBenedetti will have them laughing and agreeing with all kinds of annoyances and questions that will spark conversation at the dinner table. Then there’s “The Wisdom of Picard,” edited by Chip Carter, a collection of statements and thoughts uttered by the Star Trek captain. Bonus: information on which show, season, and episode the quotation can be found. For the giftee who’s a fan of Walt Carr’s carrtoons, look for “Just Us!” by Carr. These are comics on racism, culture, and they’re wry and sometimes funny, they’ll poke at your sense of outrage, and for the person on your list who needs something different, here it is... BOOKWORM book about holidays and celebrations around the world. For a kid who can sit a little longer than most, “Pirate Nell’s Tale to Tell” by Helen Docherty & Thomas Docherty is a great book to try. It’s a longer, more involved tale of high seas and hijinx, whales and swashbuckling. Wrap it up with “Jules vs. The Ocean” by Jessie Sima, a book about the water, a sand castle, and guess what happens... The little monster maven on your gift list this year will really enjoy “Travel Guide for Monsters” by Lori Degman, illustrated by Dave Szalay, a travelogue for the creature-onthe-go. Wrap it up with “I Love My Fangs!” by Kelly Leigh Miller, a tale of a very important

lost tooth. And on that note, why not put “Letters from My Tooth Fairy” by Brooke Hecker, illustrated by Deborah Melmon in the package, too? The budding politician on your gift list might enjoy unwrapping “Elizabeth Warren’s Big, Bold Plans” by Laurie Ann Thompson, illustrated by Susanna Chapmen. It’s a kidfriendly version of Warren’s biography, mean t for older storytime lovers. Pair it with “Truth and Honor: The President Ford Story” by Lindsey McDivitt, illustrated by Matt Faulkner, for a great gift for your future politician. CHILDREN - BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERS For the kid who loves animals and mysteries

MURRAY

COLLISION

(not necessarily in that order), wrapping up “The Great Pet Heist” by Emily Ecton, art by Dave Mottram, might be the best thing to do this holiday. It’s the story of Butterbean the weiner dog, his fellow pets, and what happened on the day that Mrs. Food fell and hurt herself. Will someone come to take care of them, or will they have to make better plans? The princess on your list will love “Eight Princesses and a Magic Mirror” by Natasha Farrant, illustrated by Lydia Corry. It’s the story of a mirror cast by an enchantress, and in it are eight princesses who flat-out refuse to act princess-like but instead are brave, fierce, and tough. BOOKS FOR TEENS Think before you wrap up “The Body Image Book for Girls” by Charlotte Markey. Is your giftee ages 12 and up? Will she be okay with this

as a gift? Are you okay with it? If your answer is yes, and yes, then YES. Wrap it up with “Body Talk” by Kelly Jensen, a book of essays on “radical anatomy.” The fantasy lover on your list will love “Poisoned” by Jennifer Donnelly, a SnowWhite-type tale of an evil queen and her efforts to kill a princess. But was the queen really behind the plot to cut out the princess’s heart? Wrap it up with “Little Creeping Things” by Chelsea Ichaso, a story of repressed memories, bullying, and a murder that may (or may not) have happened the way one girl thinks it did. Your young cook is going to love unwrapping “The Healthy Junior Chef Cookbook” from Williams Sonoma; the recipes are easy but challenging (be sure to point out your favorite) and oh, those pictures! Wrap it with a new kitchen tool set for the best gift.

s yet another year comes to a close; it is a good time to reflect on all of the various things that have affected our lives and the world around us — the good, the bad and the ugly. While I don’t like to focus on negative, it is important that we recognize that there are things that occur that we don’t particularly like that have come into our lives this past year. I think most of us could agree that the corona virus that so dominated the news all year long fits into the category of “the bad” and perhaps even into the category of “the ugly!” So much confusion, misinformation and conflicting data and advice surrounded this pandemic — multiplying the negative impact it had on all of us. While initially the number of people in our area that contracted the virus and the number of resultant deaths was low in comparison to much of the nation, unfortunately the local and nearby cases are rising as this year comes to an end. The good news that we have all

been anxiously awaiting is the arrival of not just one, but two vaccines has begun. We now can be much more hopeful since there appears to be a light at the end of the tunnel for this pandemic. There is no doubt that the handling of the pandemic and the resultant effect it has had on our state and local economy has been very impactful for many, yet now, with the introduction of the vaccines, we can anticipate a turn-around in the coming months. The bright side of this coin is that most economists agree that once the recovery begins, the economy should roar back and, through the lessons that we have learned during the pandemic, the future looks even brighter. And, as if the pandemic throughout most of the year was not enough, do I really need to bring up the 33 inches of snow that is still blocking my back door from opening! I guess Mother Nature just wanted to heap one last thing on top of all the rest to remind us that she does what she wants, like it or not! So what is the good news? Well,

involved in the hunting experience but also witnessing their success. On the last day of the regular firearms deer season last week, I had the opportunity to behold more success than I ever expected. All three generations, my wife, Sheila, our daughter, Kristin, and our granddaughter, Sierra, were all set up in deer hunting treestands about a hundred yards apart on my son’s property-I was in a stand a bit further away. Things were quiet until late morning when Sierra’s gun rang out, and she dropped an antlerless deer; great, I thought, at least one of the three had success. Sierra departed for the day, and her mother took up a position in her stand.

Late on that final day, I again heard a shot ring out and soon got the message that Sheila had scored on a doe as well. I made my way to her stand, congratulated her, and began gutting and then dragging the deer up to the truck. This is great, I thought; at least two of the ladies bagged a deer-can’t expect much more than that! As my wife and I made our way towards the truck, only about a half-hour of hunting was left, and suddenly another shot rang out from Kristin’s direction; we stopped what we were doing and headed right for her location. She took us to the spot where she thought the deer was standing when she shot, but I

found nothing; light was fading fast, so I got a flashlight out and began searching further down in the woods. Finally, a good blood trail and another 50 yards revealed doe number three. All three ladies representing three generations were all successful in that final day-kind of exciting. What I found even more intriguing was that this was the first time for each of them to be alone in a stand -nobody was there to mentor or offer direction. Yes, they have taken deer in the past, but they were always with an experienced male hunter; this time, they did it on their own. Not a bad way to end the final day of the regular gun hunting deer season.

As a fly-fishing instructor for the National Wildlife Federation a number of years ago, I had the opportunity to teach fly fishing to adults in several states throughout the country’s northeastern part. Interestingly, the majority of my participants were women, and today there is an even greater push to get women into fishing and hunting. I have always been on board with the idea of getting the ladies into the outdoors, and although my wife came from a nonhunting background, it didn’t take me too long to get her into both hunting and fishing and the same for my daughter. What’s even more satisfying is not only getting the women in your life more

it is a shame those athletic gifts remain unopened. The kings’ booty was indeed impressive and was there for all to be seen. Those athletic gifts have far less glitter and may be missed by onlookers at first glance, but for those who participate they are every bit as cherished as those presented on that Holy Night. The first of those is commitment, sport’s gift to provide the opportunity to share in a cause bigger than one’s self. Striving towards a common goal, experiencing the ups and downs along the way, making the necessary sacrifices and adjustments, giving the needed effort and sharing the

euphoria when the objective is achieved are gifts to be cherished for a lifetime. The second is conditioning, both physical and mental. Being of strong mind and body isn’t always fun, and many can’t seem to make the leap. But it is crucial because one is either getting strong or getting weaker. There is no standing still. Sports provide the opportunity for both. The third is memories. Regardless if one wins a championship or falls short of that goal, the memories derived from sports participation will last a lifetime. If you have ever gone to a high school reunion, the tales shared about what happened

on the playing field or gymnasium are paramount conversations, not to mention the stories passed down to children and grandchildren. Despite being left out in the cold by the current shutdown of the sports we enjoy, the good thing is those gifts of commitment, conditioning and memories do not come with an expiration date and sizing is not an issue. When sports return, they will still be there to be opened and enjoyed by all those wishing to partake. Stay healthy and happy and hopefully reading this column in the better days ahead!

Outside that Bethlehem stable 21 centuries ago, the visiting three kings presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh in what became the first Christmas gifts given. Today, as the local sporting scene has been shut down by the decree of Governor Wolf, there is truly no room at the gymnasium inns for any celebrations or gift giving. Understandably, the health of the populous is the primary concern, but

Young Francis is a nymphing phenom and I was looking forward to seeing him in action. We got to Penns around 8:30. We both grabbed our gear and started wading. Erik gave me a quick crash course on what to look for. He kicked over a few rocks and he explained what was in the water. Erik suggested I start with a PEEPING CADDIS. He pointed at a pocket behind some rapids. I made a few casts and focused on my indicator. I felt a slight tug and set the hook. BANG. It was a gorgeous 14-inch wild Brown. Unbelievable colors. Hopefully there is enough room for a picture. I ended up catching four, while Erik was on fire. He landed many more. What an experience. I had a ball fishing with my pal. He was great in showing me the ropes. I have fished Penns on a few occasions. But never had any luck until that morning. I will be back sometime in the near future. Hopefully my buddy Erik won’t mind if tag along. Social media is only good for one thing. It connects us fishermen. Period. Merry Christmas friends. Special thanks to all of the Webb Weekly readers. Cheers.

with Erik, but I consider him as one of my good friends. WHO ARE YOU FISHING WITH? I HAVEN’T HEARD THAT NAME SINCE HIGH SCHOOL. Erik is a great fisherman. He is also the brain trust of a little side gig he calls BLACK RUN FLY CO. Francis is a master at tying. Many of his bugs are on display at several of the premier fly shops. I reach out to Erik quite often. He is quick with some advice and guidance. Our relationship has grown via FACEBOOK and INSTAGRAM. Erik is a huge fan of the Lycoming Creek Chronicles. I asked my friend if he would put together a small winter nymphing package. He gave me a great deal and asked if I wanted to do some fishing. I jumped at the opportunity. I met Erik at his house outside of Mifflinburg around 7:00. We jumped into his truck and headed south. We were going to fish Penns Creek on a bitter cold Sunday morning. Our conversation started immediately. Again. I am sure that this was our first interaction in person. Because of social media we knew everything. He asked about my family and I congratulated his boy on his monster buck. Erik and I then talked fishing.
