From the Publisher…

I’m Starting with the Man in the Mirror

A

Happy 2021 to all! I pray as you are reading this, you and your loved ones are healthy, happy, and well. My title is from “Man in the Mirror,” Michael Jackson’s hit song with a message from 1988. It’s the perfect battle cry for the New Year. Google it and read the lyrics or give it a listen. It’s hard to believe we’re embarking on the 19th Year of the Webb Weekly. I remember sitting down with my Father and discussing the project that became the Webb Weekly like it was yesterday. A lot has changed since we began the Webb Weekly. It’s even more beyond belief that it has been over eight years since my Dad left us for a better place. One thing that will never change is our commitment to provide the best publication possible for the local community. The good news about people, places, events, and activities that make our neck of Penns Woods so special. Within my column, I always call it as I see it, just like my Father. I believe you would be hard-pressed to find a person that talks to more people or travels more miles in Lycoming County and its fringes than I do. I try to always do it with a smile and have no problem asking a tough question no matter who I’m speaking with. And for all that know me, I talk

to everyone just like my Father. I am always interested to know what’s going on around me and what you think. “We the People” know the truth about what’s really going on. My contact information is always available on page four, and you can talk to me about anything. I never expect or want you to agree with everything I say. I want to hear what you think, especially if you disagree or know something I don’t. I try to answer every individual that reaches out to me personally. And no matter what you say to me, I will almost always respond as a gentleman. There have only been a few exceptions over the years. That has been when someone has attacked my family or someone I consider family in a troll, mole, or hater type way. Then you get what I’ve inherited from my Father and Pappy Maietta. I do my very best not to go there, but at that point, they have earned it. My staff and I are proud of our publication that reaches over 58,000 homes and spills into four counties adjacent to us. We consider ourselves a partner with all the businesses that advertise within our pages. It is the responsibility of every employee I have, no matter their job title, to give our clients their best each and every week. I have great people working with me that

make this all possible. I am proud of the support of the local business community and the response they receive to advertising within the Webb Weekly. It is our job to be the best advertising medium anyone may choose. Whether it’s Jim a classified ad or fullWebb, Jr. page ad, we are response driven with the same commitment. In today’s world, analytics is to advertising as it is to baseball — a great way to cloud the water and lose games. I believe you use all information possible; however, at the end of the day, the most important thing is to win on the scoreboard or ring the cash register. That is truly how success should be judged. I thank all who read the Webb Weekly, whether it is the hard copy or online. It is your readership and support of the local business community that advertises within our pages that make it all possible. Thank you for welcoming us into your home each week. If you have anything you would like to see within our paper, please let me or Editor Steph know. Steph has been with the Webb family since before we even began the publication. I have watched her grow before my eyes, from working in the mailroom and doing clerical work to being the editor of a

direct mail publication with one of the largest distributions in the Mid-Atlantic Region. For those of you that think she’s my daughter, she is not. I like to think of her as my younger sister, however. Steph has put in a lot of time, sweat, and tears for the Webb family over the years. And anybody that knows my Father and I know that blood or marriage are not the only way to be considered part of the family. The Webb Weekly is grounded in God, Family, Country, and Community. This commitment will never waiver. We will always thank and support the servicemen and women that have provided American freedom since the Revolutionary War. We will always thank and support law enforcement. Without a safe neighborhood and community to reside in, you cannot enjoy your freedom. We will always thank God for all our blessings, which should begin with the day at hand and the ability to choose all that is good through the acceptance of Jesus Christ. It is up to all of us to make the most out of 2021. It begins with individual positivity and approach. It is accomplished through selflessness and togetherness. Simply put, we must love and take care of each other. We must not allow anything to divide us and our working in the name of good for community. We must all come to the understanding the answer is never more legislation or governmental dependency. God Bless America.

Donate Blood – Save a Life National Blood Donor Month

A

s we, thankfully, say goodbye to 2020, it’s time to look forward and see what we can do to make 2021 a better year. COVID doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, but there is something that we can do to help those affected by COVID — donate blood and plasma. Particularly if you have recovered from COVID-19. People who have fully recovered from COVID-19 for at least two weeks are encouraged to consider donating plasma, which may help save the lives of other patients. COVID-19 convalescent plasma must only be collected from recovered individuals if they are eligible to donate blood. The Red Cross is currently looking for people who have fully recovered from this new coronavirus to give convalescent plasma for seriously ill coronavirus patients. You may qualify to help if you meet specific convalescent plasma and regular blood donation eligibility requirements: – Are at least 17 years old and weigh 110 lbs. Additional weight requirements apply for donors age 18 or younger.

– Are in good health. You generally feel well, even if you’re being treated for a chronic condition. Steph Nordstrom – Have a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19, but are now symptom-free and fully recovered from COVID-19. If you meet all the criteria above and are willing to help, please contact the Red Cross. To help meet the growing need for this product to treat COVID-19 patients, eligible individuals can donate their convalescent plasma with the Red Cross every seven days for up to three months. According to the American Red Cross, “Historically, convalescent plasma has been used as a potentially lifesaving treatment in some situations when new diseases or infections develop quickly, and no treatments or vaccines were available yet. Convalescent plasma is plasma collected from patients who have recovered from an infection and have antibodies that might help fight that infection — in this case patients who have fully recovered from COVID-19. More

recently, some information suggests that convalescent plasma could help some coronavirus patients — especially those who are seriously ill.” So, what exactly is Convalescent Plasma Donation? COVID-19 convalescent plasma is a type of blood donation collected from individuals who have recovered from COVID-19. The convalescent plasma contains antibodies that might help patients actively fighting the virus. Individuals who have fully recovered from a verified COVID-19 diagnosis can sign up to donate by completing the Red Cross’s Donor Request form. During a plasma donation, blood is drawn from an arm and sent through a high-tech machine that collects your plasma and then safely and comfortably returns your red cells back to you, along with some saline. Because of this process, donating plasma does take longer than a regular whole blood donation. In addition to plasma donations, The American Red Cross has a constant and ongoing need for blood and platelet donations. With the ongoing pandemic, the Red Cross needs the help of blood and platelet donors and blood drive hosts to meet the needs of patient care. Please schedule your next donation appointment now to help prevent another blood

shortage. The American Red Cross is testing all blood, platelet and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. As part of that effort, plasma from whole blood donations that test positive for COVID-19 antibodies may now help current coronavirus patients in need of convalescent plasma transfusions. They are committed to helping others in meaningful ways during this pandemic. The Red Cross is following FDA blood donation eligibility guidance for those who receive a COVID-19 vaccination, and deferral times may vary depending on the type of vaccine an individual receives. But there’s no deferral time if you receive the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. If you’ve received a COVID-19 vaccine, you’ll need to provide the manufacturer name when you come to donate. Upon vaccination, you should receive a card or printout indicating what COVID-19 vaccine was received, and we encourage you to bring that card with you to your next donation. The following eligibility guidelines apply to each COVID-19 vaccine received, including boosters: – There is no deferral time for eligible blood donors who are vaccinated with an inactivated or RNA based COVID-19

vaccine manufactured by Moderna or Pfizer. – Eligible blood donors who are vaccinated with a replication defective virus COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by AstraZeneca or Janssen/J&J must wait two weeks before giving blood. Eligible blood donors who do not know what type of COVID-19 vaccine they received must wait four weeks before giving blood. – Individuals who have received a COVID-19 vaccine are not eligible to donate convalescent plasma. Regardless of the type of vaccine an individual receives, all donors must be symptom free and feeling well at the time of donation. If an individual is experiencing any symptoms from the COVID-19 vaccine, the Red Cross asks that they postpone their donation until they are feeling better. Redcrossblood.org says, “Donating blood products is essential to community health and the need for blood products is constant. As part of our nation’s critical infrastructure, healthy individuals can still donate in areas that have issued shelter in place declarations or are operating under a phased reopening plan. Faith Conversations…

You Are a Masterpiece Note: This article appeared in the March 4, 2020, edition of the Webb Weekly. As you well know, the COVID shutdown hit the very next week. My articles tend to be summaries of the sermons I preach at church, and this article was the supposed to be the first in a 12-week series. Well, that didn’t happen. Now I’ve decided it’s time to take another run at it, so this is a restart. I encourage you to join us for this series inspired by Erick Rees’s book entitled, SHAPE: Finding

and Fulfilling Your Unique Purpose for Life, and by this incredible verse: For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Ephesians 2:10 NLT A Masterpiece? Really? eceiving Scriptural truth isn’t always easy. We sometimes find ourselves arguing with God—and this

is one of those times. Let’s be honest, most of us don’t look in the mirror and think to ourselves, now there’s a masterpiece! In fact, we think just the opposite. We have a difficult time seeing the good because Tim we are so distracted Hartzell by imperfections and limitations. The main problem lies in our inclination to measure ourselves against others. In comparison to them, we see ourselves as less than. This is a fundamental problem— and one that must be overcome. God’s Word declares that you are a masterpiece. If you disagree, then you are rejecting a truth found in God’s Word. That disobedience is causing a ripple-effect of poor choices resulting in untapped potential and ongoing negative life-patterns generated by an incorrect view of self—and of God. Instead of being an overcomer, you have chosen to be a victim. My friends, this breaks the heart of God. The only way to overcome is to receive the truth that you are indeed

a masterpiece intentionally designed by God to serve eternal and holy purposes. To do any less is to commit arrogant sin against God. Paul confronted this arrogance when he wrote, “But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?” Romans 9:20-21. When we reject God’s truth, we also reject His sovereignty. That may sound harsh, but we cannot gain a correct view of self until we are willing to fully accept the sovereignty of God and His holy design. When we reject His sovereign design, we also reject our unique and holy purposes. You may not like hearing it - but doing so is sin. Listen, you are a masterpiece. In the gospel of John, chapter 9, we read about a very interesting interaction that took place between Jesus and His disciples, “As he (Jesus) went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him,

And what about you? Is it possible that the very thing you hate about yourself is actually a masterful stroke of color splashed into the painting of your life to reveal the majesty of God? Do you think that God doesn’t know you, or that He has somehow forgotten you? Such thoughts are sin. They reject the sovereignty of God and reveal a basic distrust. Listen, you are a masterpiece designed by your holy Creator to reveal majesty and redemption and hope. These hard times are small potatoes compared to the coming good time, the lavish celebration prepared for us. There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.” I Corinthians 4:17-18 MSG

“Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” The disciples assumed that a baby being born blind had to be the result of something sinister. After all, who could ever imagine that God would design blindness into a masterpiece? Surely someone was to blame for this terribly unfair outcome. The disciples were making the same basic mistake we make. We assume that anything less than perfect is an error – or the result of sin and chaos. Our thoughts reveal our inability to accept the sovereignty of God. In a brief statement, Jesus revealed their lack of faith, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” Jesus then healed the man – and over 2,000 years later, we’re still talking about it. The redemptive value of that man’s suffering, and the suffering of his parents, far outweighed their momentary grief and pain. God new exactly what He was doing. In blindness, He created a masterpiece that revealed the healing power of Jesus.

This Year’s LION: Dennis Gruver: Emergency Coordinator Extraordinaire By Larry Stout

M

y hopes for the LION column (Leaders in Our Neighborhood) were to make 2020 the Year of the Volunteer, focusing on all the various places that volunteers have faithfully served in our area. Through the year I have highlighted some extraordinary

people, but there is one person that I wish to declare my LION of the Year, a man who literally embodies the meaning of volunteerism. Dennis Gruver has served for 64 years as a volunteer in emergency management for the Montgomery Borough, and even though he has resigned as the town’s Emergency Management Coordinator, he intends to continue to help where he can because,

as he puts it, “I have been put here to serve, not to receive.” Dennis Gruver was just a teenager when he volunteered as a junior member of the old Civil Defense Corp in 1955, serving as a ground observer spotting and reporting aircraft over the area. It was serious stuff as he was trained to report his sightings (dialing a 0 on the phone and asking for Air Craft Flash), and this continued even after his graduation from Montgomery Area High School in 1959. Dennis was groomed to take over as Civil Defense Director in 1965 when he was drafted and sent off to Vietnam. He returned home in 1968 and on December 29, 1969, was appointed the CD Director, a position that would later be changed to Emergency Management Coordinator, which he held until December 31, 2020. In those 51 years, Dennis has seen every kind of disaster imaginable, most of which related to water. When Montgomery had the highest river crest ever reported hit in June of 1972, Dennis and his team of volunteers set up 250 portable beds in the local high school to accommodate all the displaced families from the flooding. This turned into a major help center as even the water and sewer system broke down, and Dennis had to coordinate filling water cans and sewage disposal. It was quite a task for a guy in just his third year as director.

Years later, in 1996, it was the combination of a very cold winter that hit the area with heavy rain and warm temperatures. For several days, the borough of Montgomery had flooding combined with huge blocks of ice washing up and blocking the roads. Dennis had to coordinate with the local landfill to acquire equipment that was able to remove the junior icebergs that had landed in town. Dennis Gruver’s efforts have not always been appreciated, though. In 1999, a flash flood hit and created a great deal of damage. The mayor and

town council were furious and blamed Dennis and decided to fire him from his directorship. The local citizenry, however, knew better. A town meeting was called, and 245 residents had signed a petition for a recall of the mayor and the councilwoman who was pushing Dennis’ removal. Needless to say, Dennis stayed in his position. Dennis Gruver’s success has several sources, not the least of which was his faithful wife, Nancy. As committed to serving as her husband, evidenced by decades of dedication to supplying Christmas presents and food for needy families in the area, her passing in February of 2019 was a blow to the entire community. After nearly 60 years of marriage, it would not be unexpected for Dennis to pull back, but his faith enabled him to keep moving forward. Dennis Gruver has put together quite a team of volunteers, many of which have served for decades. They spend endless hours in meetings, projects, work parties, parades, fundraisers and civic events, as well as time in training and preparations for floods, fires, train wrecks, and other possible disasters. And through the years they have worked hard to build up the necessary resources

as well. For such a small community, Montgomery has an incredible emergency management system. Their resources include an Incident Management Unit vehicle equipped with two-way radio communications, a Swift Water Team that utilizes four boats, and Special Unit vehicle for carrying various equipment such as three lights trailers, various pumps, generators and lights. Nothing paints a picture better of the commitment of Dennis Gruver than how he spent Christmas Day in 2020. Starting at 6:00 a.m. and every hour on the hour till 6:00 p.m., Dennis physically checked and reported the water levels at the two locations from the river and a local creek. When I asked why, he said simply, there was a danger from flooding, so someone had to do it. It would seem that someone like Dennis Gruver would be irreplaceable, but he found a rather reliable person to take over as director — his 45-year-old son, Greg. Dennis intends to still be around, attending meetings, checking water levels, training the new volunteers, etc. Dennis intends to serve as long as his health holds out or until the Lord calls him home. What a man and what an example!

Coach Simons taught me the ‘Granby,’ one of my favorite all-time moves.” Another huge influence for Rick was his father, Robert. “My dad always had words of encouragement. hough Rick Mahonski’s older brothers, Bob and Bill, wrestled, he did not intend to become a wrestler. In fact, it wasn’t until a 7th-grade gym class with Coach Hank Green that Mahonski seriously considered it. “Coach Green had these unbelievably tall climbing ropes in class, and if you could get to the top, he basically steered you into wrestling,” said Mahonski. “I was able to climb up and down with only my upper body. He said, ‘You know you can use your legs.’ From then on, I wrestled.” Mahonski was quick to point out that the middle school team at Roosevelt, where he got his start, was undefeated for 16 years under Coach Green and that Green was certainly one of his greatest influences. Among other influences, Mahonski cited Dick Connors, who coached him at Williamsport High School, John Reese, his coach at Wilkes University, and Coach Gray Simons from the Granby School of Wrestling. “Coach Connors would push you to the limit. mat with your opponent. There are no excuses.” When asked what getting inducted into the Wilkes University Wrestling Hall of Fame meant to him, Mahonski said, “It means so much. In the 1970s Wilkes was a wrestling powerhouse. We competed against tremendous teams and were the D3 champs. It was the golden age of wrestling.” Rick Mahonski went on to take second at the NCAA Division III Championships in 1974 and was a major factor for Wilkes when they won the overall team championship. Another major accolade was taking runner-up in the 1976 EIWA’s. Mahonski lost both finals to hall of famer Rick Mast. Referring to the photo with this story, Mahonski said, “I keep that photo by my workbench. It’s very special to me because I was injured my sophomore year of college. That was my first match back my junior year. I was nervous and wasn’t sure if I still had ‘it.’ You can see Coach Reese in the background, wondering how it would turn out. I ended up tying my opponent 4-4, and I considered it a victory. Coach Reese was thrilled. He patted me on the back and said, ‘You’re back Ricky.’” When asked about wrestling and life in general, Mahonski replied, “I’ve been blessed.”

believed it was possible.” When asked if there was a moment or match that was most memorable, Mahonski replied that a couple stood out in particular. “I’ve had a lot of memorable moments, but a couple especially stand out. In the PA State finals my junior year of high school in 1972, I wrestled Wayne Packer from Bald Eagle. No one thought I could win. Wayne was beating me 8-0 at the end of the first period. I said to myself, ‘I’m going to have to pin him to win.’ So, I went out and gave it everything and was able to come back and beat him 13-12. Another great match was in 9th grade. I was set to wrestle Ben Shipman from Jersey Shore. He was a great wrestler, and I considered dropping weight to be in another weight class to avoid Ben. Coach Green pulled me aside and said, ‘You do what you want, but if you don’t face the best, you will be running the rest of your life.” Mahonski went on to win the match against Shipman. Second only to his parents, Mahonski credits wrestling for his success in life. “Wrestling is a life-changing sport. If a parent were to ask me whether their child should wrestle, I would tell them it’s brutal, hard, and tough. That’s why numbers are dropping. But it’s also a character builder. t is an understatement to say that 2020 has been a tough year, particularly because of COVID-19. One organization that has been doing its best to meet the challenges of those is need that has been accelerated by this crazy year has been the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Their

capacity to help provide food for those in need has been sorely strained. But it is not all doom and gloom for them. They have found that the people of this area have rallied to help them do their job in a variety ways from donating money to just volunteering to help pack those food products up for those who will use the food. “It has been wonderful to see how

the people of this area have really stepped up to help us,” Carla Fisher, Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, told Webb Weekly. Some area businesses have even seen fit to donate to us the funds they would have used for holding their Christmas and holiday parties that were cancelled due to health concerns.” One area business that chose to do this was the Mifflinburg Lumber and Building Supply Company. “For us, the Mifflinburg Lumber Christmas Party has been a tradition. Families would gather at a local restaurant where we took over an entire room, had appetizers and dinner and shared ridiculous games and gifts. It has been a wonderful event that made our work team more like family,” said Nate Seigel, General Manager for Mifflinburg Lumber and Building Supply. “This year with COVID concerns, we were disappointed to be forced to cancel but saw a new opportunity to give. Since

our beginning, giving back in our community has been a fundamental attribute of our organization so it was natural to find a new home for our Christmas funds, especially given the extraordinary need.” “Thousands of families in central Pennsylvania are experiencing food insecurity for the first time as a result of the pandemic. Of those individuals, one-third are children,” Joe Arthur, Executive Director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, said. The holidays are supposed to be the most wonderful time, but for many who are still trying to get back on their feet since the disruption of the pandemic, this year the holidays can be the most stressful time of the year. Many individuals have also come together this holiday season to be that glimmer of hope for their neighbors. “I usually exchange small presents with a group of good friends over the holidays. This year, we’ve decided that gifts are just inappropriate with such need out

[but] there’s still some kind of love out there.” Josie’s daughter, Angelia, added “There’s a lot of care that people put into it [the Food Bank]. It means a lot from everybody in our household.” Since COVID struck, the Food Bank saw a more than 40 percent increase in food distribution over the same time last year. This equates

to more than 13 million additional, healthy meals. The need is not waning. COVID-19 pandemic reminds us that anyone, at any time, in any circumstance, could need a little extra help keeping food on the table. Not unlike many Americans, many of the 200,000 people, up from 135,000 the year prior, who visit one of our partner agencies each month live paycheckto-paycheck and are one bad break away from being in a tough spot. “This has been a year like no

other. The charitable food network has been put to the test with a significant increase in demand since March ,” said Arthur. “It is partnerships like these, where we remain a strong front to combat hunger and make sure everyone has a meal on the table this holiday and beyond.” To learn more about the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and to join in the fight against hunger, please visit www.centralpafoodbank.org or call 570-321-8023.

This act of kindness is not taken lightly by our neighbors and friends reaching out for help this holiday season. For Josie, who attended a holiday distribution at one of our partner agencies in Williamsport, the Food Bank and the services provides for families, including her own, means love. “It shows me there is love in the

I had to change was breakfast. If I made myself at least eat a banana or something easy, it would help my metabolism to kick start and not be so hungry by lunchtime. Premier Protein drinks were a great thing for me because I could grab and go. At 30g of protein, I couldn’t believe how it satisfied me! I didn’t need them every day, but on those busy mornings, it was nice to be able to just grab a banana and protein drink, and out the door, I’d go. Now, I said “continue” for this because this wasn’t for 2020, this started about two years ago, and I have continued to make changes in my life. I’ve always told you someday I would share my journey with you all, and I thought the new year was perfect. It would never fit all in one column, so in the next few weeks, I am going to share it with you all. Even if I can inspire one of you, it will be so worth it. Diets don’t work, guys — for real. Sticking to something for the rest of your life by not eating pizza, ice cream, or chips!? Gasp! Who wants to live like that!? I had to

find a way that worked for me and knew I could stick to it. That’s when I started small changes that turned into big changes. Do you want to make those changes too? Come along with me for the next few weeks; I want to share my journey with you because you can do it too! Caramel Peanut Butter Oatmeal Protein Shake Ingredients: • 1 frozen or ripe banana • 1/3 cup quick oats • 1 caramel protein shake • 2 Tbs. of PB2 powder • Ice (about 2/3 cup) *Makes enough for two drinks. 425 calories for the whole batch! Directions: Blend and enjoy!

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

Style File – Hygge

A

s we begin a new year facing a long, cold, and isolating winter, it may seem like there’s not much light at the end of the tunnel. However, instead of bracing ourselves against the lonely, dark days ahead, why not embrace sticking close to home with a bit of Hygge style? What is Hygge, and how do you say it? Hygge, pronounced “hue-gah” is a Danish/Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfort. Hygge as a lifestyle has become a major part of Danish

culture this century as a means of battling against the seasonal depression that often comes with winter. Most Scandinavian countries receive only 6-5 hours of daylight each 24-cycle during the winter, so they’ve adapted and learned to enjoy this quieter time. Danes and Norwegians created the idea of Hygge in order to survive the boredom of colder months and to find moments to celebrate, acknowledge, and break up the mundanity and exhaustion of harsh weather.

The style of Hygge can be incorporated into home décor, clothing, and beauty products and owes much to the architecture and practicality of Northern Europe. For the home, stick to a neutral color scheme to make the most of natural Bernadette Ulsamer light. Create a sense of coziness with throw rugs, fluffy pillows, and warm blankets. Also, incorporate texture in your living space to add interest to a more minimalist design. Warm, natural materials like wood and wool best represent the Hygge style. You can mix things up with different types of flowers for small pops of colors. Another decorative element essential to Hygge are candles for a soft glowing light that generates a warm radiance. If the idea of an open flame is cause for concern, repurpose those holiday lights. Whether in your bedroom, living room, or an enclosed patio, twinkly lights bring a cheery and festive sense to your interior. They can be strung up around door frames, bookshelves, or worked into a wall hanging. If you are lucky enough to have a working fireplace, having a fire is definitely Hygge for additional warmth and light in the home. If your hearth is no longer functional or purely

decorative, you can create the sense of a fire with candles. Whether they are lit or battery-operated, candlelight gives you that Hygge feeling. Having personal Hygge style is a bit tricky to pin down. Since the concept of Hygge centers on comfy-cozy feelings, any clothing that makes you feel warm and snuggly would be Hygge. The core of Hygge fashion includes scarves, woolen socks, and neutral basics, like black turtlenecks and joggers, and roomy silhouettes. Again, Hygge style takes its cues from Danish designers’ aesthetics embracing head-to-toe knits and fair isle prints. However, Hygge style is not just for loungewear. Oversized button-down shirts, high-waisted wide-leg trousers, knit blazers, and heeled loafers are Hygge work-wear options. Also, try layered all-black outfits with a bulkier top half and a fitted bottom, like flat boots, black denim, and a cocoon style coat, for Hygge streetwear. Hygge beauty isn’t so much about products, but routines, general experience, and energy. If you are practicing any type of self-care, then a Hygge beauty ritual is right up your alley. Some ways to incorporate a Hygge sensibility to wellness and beauty include giving yourself a mini facial every time you wash your face. Try a warming mask instead of an exfoliating mask. As

can foster relaxation and wellness through smell. I personally like to burn a eucalyptus candle when I shower and apply facial treatment to create a spa-like feeling. Another great way to use smell is by baking. Applesauce muffins, banana bread, cornbread, or any favorite baked good will definitely generate comforting aromas. Hygge just requires consciousness, a certain slowness, and the ability to recognize and enjoy the present. By creating simple rituals without too much effort, like brewing real tea and drinking from a china cup every evening before bed, or buying fresh flowers once a week,

or having a designated family dinner night where everyone helps in the kitchen, makes domestic and personal life more intentional. Instead of going through the motions of getting through the day weighed down by a feeling of drudgery, Hygge is about creating good simple moments and being aware of them. And even if tea, flowers, candles, and scarves are not really part of your aesthetic or style, you

can still incorporate the lifestyle of Hygge by being thankful instead of stressed out by your day. Of course, wearing a sweater and wool socks helps.

cold, dry air can do a number on your complexion and your mood, a selfwarming skin treatment can come in handy to help both. Don’t neglect your neck; beyond piling up on the scarves, your neck and throat also need some tender care. Look for a neck cream with active ingredients like peptides, minerals, and hyaluronic acids. A Hygge wellness routine should extend beyond the body and also work to cultivate a comforting atmosphere, which is the backbone of all things Hygge. Consider how fragrance works in your home. County Hall Corner The Larry Awards for 2020 By Larry Stout

T

he motion picture industry has its Oscar Awards, the theater industry has its Tony Awards, so it is time that County Hall Corner should have its Larry Awards. Following county government for the past six years, I believe it is time to give some recognition for the amazing Locally Owned

jobs that many have performed through unprecedented challenges. Here are my selections: OUTSTANDING ROOKIE IN OFFICE AWARD: DA Ryan Gardner. District Attorney Gardner hit the ground running months before he even took office in January of 2020 and totally reorganized his office into a lean, clean, prosecuting machine. Locally Operated

He exhibits a rare leadership trait of demonstrating boldness in a humble manner, which not only gets better results but also earns the respect of all those around him. Gardner has literally redefined the position of District Attorney in Lycoming County. EXCELLENCE IN THANKLESS JOB AWARD: Coroner Chuck Kiessling Jr. For the past eight years, Coroner Kiessling has been pleading with the county for a new Coroner’s Office/Regional Forensic Center to deal with the steadily increasing number of homicides, suicides, drug overdoses, unclaimed deceased bodies in his sphere of authority. Dealing with COVID deaths just added to his already overburdened workload. Yet, he goes above and beyond his job, for example, championing a cause to eliminate Sudden Infant Death Syndrome cases by supplying baby cribs to needy mothers. He sees the worst of troubles and yet, for the past twenty years, continues to perform his duties in ways that are nothing less than miraculous.

MISSED THE MOST AWARD: Annabel R. Miller. There are many candidates for this award; Karl Demi in the Information Services Department and Ed Robbins in Juvenile Probation, for example, but Annabel Miller is the absolute embodiment of a public servant. She went to work for Lycoming County on May 20, 1943, as a typist in the Register and Recorder’s Office. She was a fixture in that office for decades and decades, eventually becoming the elected Register and Recorder in 1992, serving until her retirement in March of 2020. Her commitment to excellence was legendary. We will never see the likes of her again.

highly respected by all who know and work with him. He deserves high praise and appreciation for maintaining stability in emergency services during these very unstable times. CONGENIALITY AWARD: Administrative Manager for the Lycoming County Commissioners Eileen Ebner. This woman has been mentioned several times in my articles because she deserves it. Eileen is often the first stop for the public when seeking to

communicate with the county commissioners. She prepares for the public meetings, interacts with county employees, engages the public when they have questions, and receives more than her share of grief over matters she has no control over. Yet through all this, she never loses her smile. Eileen is a true trooper and brings a ray of sunlight to every dark day. TEAMWORK AWARD: The Lycoming County Courthouse. It is impossible to describe the

difficulties that the courts, the DA’s office, the sheriff ’s office, and the others have contended with through the coronavirus year. The dedication and ingenuity that kept the wheels of justice moving forward in Lycoming County through 2020 is a story that truly needs telling someday. Hats off and high praise to the entire team. Finally, we must at least give a high five to the three Lycoming County Commissioners; Scott Metzger, Tony Mussare, and Rick Mirabito. They pulled together and helped pull us all through a very rough year.

Chronic Kidney Disease: The Silent Killer By Sam Stea, MD Nephrologist, UPMC

A

pproximately 26 million American adults have chronic kidney disease and millions of others are at risk but may not know it. Kidney disease is often called the “silent killer,” because it has no symptoms until the advanced stage of the disease. In fact, one in nine Americans has chronic kidney disease and are unaware that they have it, because they do not feel ill. Function of the Kidneys The kidneys help our bodies remove wastes, fluids, and toxins; regulate the body’s supply of water and certain chemicals in the blood (such as calcium, sodium, and potassium); and release hormones into the bloodstream that help to regulate blood pressure, create red blood cells, and produce vitamin D – helping maintain strong bones. According to the National Kidney Foundation, the kidneys perform their life-sustaining job of filtering and returning to the bloodstream about 200 quarts of fluid every 24 hours. Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease Chronic kidney disease (CKD) occurs

when the kidneys are damaged and unable to perform their cleansing and restorative functions. Over time, this can lead to a build-up of waste matter in the bloodstream, which makes us sick. Complications of CKD include high blood pressure, anemia, weak bones, nutritional deficits, and nerve damage. Many health conditions can contribute to CKD, but the primary causes are two very common conditions: diabetes and high blood pressure. Diabetes and the accompanying high levels of blood sugar can damage the organs in the body, including the kidneys and heart. High blood pressure, or hypertension, can damage blood vessels throughout the body, including those in the kidneys. When these blood vessels are damaged, the kidneys are less effective at removing waste and extra fluid from the body. The excess fluid, in turn, raises blood pressure even more, which then increases the risk of chronic kidney disease – a vicious cycle. Sometimes, chronic kidney disease may progress to kidney failure, requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation. What’s so challenging about this disease is that many people will have no symptoms in early in the disease progression. However, some people may start to experience the following

symptoms as the disease advances: • Excessive fatigue and lack of energy • Difficulty concentrating • Poor appetite • Difficulty sleeping • Swollen feet and ankles • Puffiness around the eyes, especially in the morning • Dry, itchy skin Risks and Treatment Chronic kidney disease can develop in anyone, at any age, but certain individuals have greater risk. In addition to having diabetes and high blood pressure, other risk factors include advanced age and a family history of the disease. Early detection of CKD can be done through simple tests such as a blood test for creatinine levels, which tells how effectively your kidneys are removing waste from the blood; and a urine test to measure protein levels in the urine. High levels of protein in the urine may indicate kidney disease. The first step in treatment is to determine the cause of CKD. Although many causes remain unknown, there are other reasons for kidney problems, many of which are treatable. These include kidney problems caused by medications that impair kidney function, a kidney stone, obstruction in the urinary tract, urinary tract infection, or decreased blood flow to the kidneys. Treatment of these causes may stop or slow the progression of CKD. Managing diabetes and high blood

ROAN Inc.

The Roving Sportsman… Winter Hikes By Jon Pries

T

here are many benefits that can be derived from a hike in the woods, especially this time of year. The days are slowly getting longer, the daytime temperatures are forecast to be a bit above normal for the beginning of January and we can all use some fresh clean air that we can breathe without having to wear a mask! Most folks these days have been tolerating being rather housebound for months and the exercise and fresh air would be very beneficial. In fact, I recently spoke with a Virologist who was very encouraging about the clean air that we all have available to us here in Northcentral Pennsylvania. As he explained, “About 80% of our immune system is used up in fighting all of the various things that are airborne and that we are usually exposed to every day – particularly in an urban setting.” Residents of Lycoming county and surrounding areas either live in the

country or can quickly and easily travel to the country to spend time in this clean air environment while enjoying a winter hike. Yes, we did receive an unusually deep snow before Christmas, and it was later packed down by a deluge of rain. Now, the snow has been packed down and can easily be walked upon without breaking through a top crust with every step along the way. Going hiking this time of year simply provides a superior type of aerobic exercise. One of the enjoyable side benefits of a winter hike is being able to come across the various animal tracks in the snow that allow us to discover what wildlife is active in our area and just where their current travel routes are. By discovering these travel areas, you will know just where to look for shed antlers in the coming months. For this, you might want to focus your time on south-facing hillsides, where deer trails cross low fences and where there are winter seeps or springs. In the coming

it can be more difficult to study and visualize the layout you hope to achieve in habitat improvement. So now, while everything is much more open and visible, take some time to make some initial plans for the upcoming springtime habitat work. Finally, there is the idea of wintertime feeding of wildlife. It is a subject often contemplated by hunters and conservationists. Normally, deer, turkeys and other various game animals and birds are able to scratch or dig through layers of dry snow that are not too deep to

get to clovers, grasses and nuts and seeds to help make it through the winter months. Many of the hunters I have talked to related that the deer that they have taken had a welldeveloped layer of fat to help see them through the winter. But something to consider is the deep snow that we just experienced that was followed by the heavy rain. The rain packed down the snow and the subsequent below freezing temperatures created a hard icy crust on top of the snow. This is the scenario that makes it difficult for any wildlife to procure food of

any kind to help make it through the winter months. If you have an area where you can do so, spreading scratch grain or shelled corn on top of the crust of snow and ice will provide some relief to game. Keep in mind that baiting deer is not legal in our state and the Pennsylvania statewide flintlock antlered and antlerless deer season is currently underway and will run until January 18. Thus, to avoid any conflict, you might want to wait until after that date to put out any feed of any kind.

weeks numerous days with fresh snows are predicted and even a light dusting of fresh snow will provide a look at new overnight activity by all sorts of wildlife. ’d be the first to admit that I am not a dedicated coyote hunter; I have on a few occasions pursued coyotes both during the daylight and at night, but I had no success. My lack of success by no means reflects a lack of coyotes and quite the opposite, I suspect, since coyote populations have increased over the years and they have adapted quite well to urbanized areas. Those who are devoted to coyote hunting certainly take their fair share and hunting them has become more popular over the years as reflected by the popularity of organized coyote hunts. What’s interesting is that the more they are hunted the more they seem to persist and endure. Scientists who study wildlife seem to agree that it’s possible to remove up to

75 percent of the coyote population in a given area and they are quite able to reestablish their numbers. Coyotes don’t have any natural enemies, their greatest adversary is actually us — not only Ken do we hunt them, but we Hunter take out a pretty good number on our highways; I know this because I have a habit of identifying and counting dead animal carcasses as I drive down the highway. I’m not sure there are any figures to support the next statement, but I suspect there are nearly as many “incidental’ coyote kills as there are kills by those who are out on a dedicated coyote hunt. In other words, hunters who are hunting deer or some other game animal will often take a coyote if it presents a shot; a couple of years ago my wife did that very

calls can also be rewarding. With all the deer gut piles and unrecovered deer left in the woods I suspect there are a lot of coyotes feasting on the carcasses possibly creating more hunting opportunities. With the snow too it will be possible to scout out coyote tracks; coyotes put one foot right in front of the other thus leaving an inline set of tracks. I think a winter night hunt would be especially intriguing. What’s more is the Pennsylvania Game

MURRAY

COLLISION

Commission recently approved a regulation change that will allow handheld and sportingarm mounted night-vision and infrared (thermal) optics to be used while hunting coyotes and other furbearers. These devices were previously prohibited by state law. This equipment will provide coyote hunters with more tools making your chances of success even greater. The coyote breeding season is late winter so males will be looking

for female companionship; how this affects hunting opportunities I’m not sure. While mating pairs may be spotted it’s also possible to have a single male searching out a mate or even packs of coyotes are occasionally seen. A pack could consist of three to eight animals and cover five to eight square miles; individual coyotes may range even more than that. Even if you haven’t seen any in your area that doesn’t mean some won’t show up and a night hunt could prove productive.

thing. We were set up about 40 yards apart hunting deer when a coyote showed up a short distance down the hollow; one shot and she dropped the coyote-the only one she had ever seen while hunting over the years. I suspect those coyote hunters using dogs have far greater success but a winter hunt using

nless you are a long-suffering fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, that Christmas Eve transaction may not have even caught your eye as you went about your final preChristmas preparations. But for those out there still waiting to celebrate baseball success in the Burgh, the immediate reaction had to be “here we go again.” A little history, if I might. In last week’s column, I had a little fun pointing out “what’s in a name” regarding the nicknames of professional sports teams

as it relates to the ongoing political correctness. I tongue-in-check suggested that perhaps the Pirates should be the next team to change their nickname due to the hostile name association referencing those sea-going bandits. In truth, that is pretty much how they became known Scott as the Pirates in the first Lowery place. Professional baseball in Pittsburgh began in 1876 when the Pittsburgh Alleghenys were formed. They played two seasons and were disbanded. The team was reformed in 1882 as a

member of the American Association and later joined the rival National League in 1887. The team had very little success and began to lose players to other teams. It got so bad that in 1890 the team won just 23 games and lost 113. During the winter of 1890-91, Pittsburgh manager Ned Hanlon successfully persuaded Philadelphia Athletics star second baseman to sign with the Alleghenys. Philadelphia protested vigorously, calling the signing “piratical.” Pittsburgh officially nicknamed itself the Pirates for the 1891 season, and the name stuck. However, that was just the beginning. In 1900, the National League cut back from 12 teams to eight. Barney Dreyfuss, the former owner of the now-defunct

Cubs in a ten-player deal. Pirate fans were outraged. Branch Rickey, the same man who brought Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers, was then the Pirates’ general manager. He was reported to have told Kiner, “we finished last with you; we can finish last without you.” The harsh truth is that same sentiment could have been told to Josh Bell. Bell was a good guy to root for. He related to the fans and did charity work in the Pittsburgh community. I have a Josh Bell autographed jersey and a few of his bobbleheads among my sports collection. I wish him well in Washington. Perhaps he will get to experience a World Series as Cole and Morton have done after being traded away. For the Pirates, there is nowhere to go but up, whoever is on their roster. Teams like the Yankees and the Dodgers don’t trade away their star players; they acquire star players from other teams. But the Pirates are a long, long way away from that. It has been said that “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Let’s just hope that beautiful PNC Park doesn’t turn into an ancient coliseum before these modern-day Pirates make opponents walk the plank. Come opening day, disappointment over the Bell trade will dissipate. I’ll watch the Pirates games on TV and make a few trips to Pittsburgh and continue the open hope that “this time” new Pirates general manager Ben Cherington will be able to do what his predecessors couldn’t — bring some joy to Mudville on the shores of the Allegheny.

Louisville Cardinals, acquired controlling interest of the Pirates. He was then successful in bringing 14 players with him that became the largest player transaction in franchise history. Included among those players was all-time baseball great shortstop Honus Wagner; the team went on to win three consecutive pennants from 1901-03 and lost the first World Series to the Boston Americans in 1903. By 1912, the “Pirates” nickname officially appeared on the team’s uniforms. Now, 109 years later, Pirates fans may be more likely to call their team “the Giveaways.” Those three years, 2013-2015, when the Pirates last appeared in the National League playoffs indeed seem a bit like ancient history. Since then, they have had four losing seasons in the past five years and finished the abbreviated 2020 season with the Major Leagues’ worst record, 1941. The trading of Bell, the popular and only all-star player, was another in the recent trend of developing star players and trading them away rather than paying to retain them. The lost includes Gerrit Cole, Charlie Morton, Andrew McCutchen, and Starling Marte. However, trading star players isn’t new in Pittsburgh. In the late 1940s and early 50s, Pirates outfielder Ralph Kiner was one of baseball’s biggest stars. During that period, he led the National League in home runs seven times, and after his retirement, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. But in June 1953, he was traded to the Chicago

Sporting Matters With Spence…

An Ode to COVID

P

robably the dumbest thing I did was try to get organized. I started with purchasing a 2020 planner. Dumb. The entire world has turned upside down. I am now telling my parents to stay indoors. But kudos to CORONA. It has done what no woman has been able to. She canceled sports, closed the bars and the men are home. We used to kid. “I wouldn’t touch her with a six-foot pole.” Here we are. It’s a national phenomenon. Never in a million years did I think I could walk into M & T with a mask and ask for money. Disclaimer. I stole those. So COVID has made an impact. It has created all kinds of challenges. We still face many uncertainties, and the pandemic has wreaked havoc on public health, society and the economy. The sporting realm has changed dramatically. Many professional and amateur leagues have postponed or suspended their

seasons. The value is astronomical. I remember hearing the news that seemed to change everything. Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive. The NBA was forced to make a difficult decision. They became the first sports organization to hit their brakes. The season came to a halt on March 11th. At that time there were still 259 games left. The combined revenues lost as a result were estimated between 350 and 450 million US dollars. That is just the gate. Never mind the concessions or other stuff. Now the NBA was successful in playing their playoffs inside a bio-secure “bubble” at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. Lebron James and the LA Lakers took home the title this past October. Almost an entire year after the regular season. Crazy. The NBA’s unprecedented move caused a major domino. The NCAA who is responsible for all of college sports followed suit and canceled

all of its remaining winter and upcoming spring seasons. This included MARCH MADNESS, the NCAA Men’s B a s k e t b a l l Championships. and Jamie Television rights Spencer marketing alone come in close to 867 million US dollars. This was the first cancelation since the tournament’s 1939 introduction. Every major college and university has suffered. No games. Nothing. The great city of Atlanta was set to host the 2020 NCAA hoops championship. They lost big time. Some say over 100 million US dollars are gone. Formula One racing has also been affected. They cancelled the Australian Grand Prix. Races in Bahrain and Vietnam were postponed the next day. The potential losses for the hosting fees were estimated over 602 million US dollars. With so much uncertainty, the Formula One Group has lost

45% of their market value. This translates to a change of five billion dollars. Ouch. The season eventually started in early July. 17 races were on the docket for the remainder of 2020. Hopefully they can salvage something. The Summer Olympics were rescheduled. The 2020 games were supposed to be held in Toyko. This all changed with the introduction to COVID. They were pushed back to 2021. This is the very first time the IOC had to postpone an entire year. Forget about numbers. Shutting down was a huge blow. The financial burden to the host nation is enormous. Japan has already committed 13.4 billion US dollars towards organization. The new Olympic Stadium in Toyko cost 277 million US dollars alone. I understand that the IOC has insurance and many buffers in the event of a cancelation but rescheduling the entire event to 2021 has certainly been an economic and logistical nightmare. Happy New Year kids. Hang in there. Cheers.
