No Number of Wrongs Ever Justify a Right By Jim Webb Jr.

I

cannot believe what I have witnessed in the United States of America in the last year. I am going to try to stay positive and touch on the issues of the past week that are most important. Before I get to the national disgrace that occurred in Washington, D.C., I need to spend a few words on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. He is an example of why we need term limits, and I am talking across-the-board, whether it be an elected or appointed position. As I always state, it is amazing the job our forefathers did in thinking ahead of the problems that would face freedom in the future of our Nation. The Constitution of the United States of America and the rights of “We the People” are cut-and-dry. It was written this way for primarily one reason, to protect the freedom of the individual citizen within the framework of our One Republic under God. This is to work hand-in-hand with preventing government from becoming oppressive and outgrowing their intentions. In our forefathers’ minds, it was never the intention for anyone, no matter of party, to build unmeasurable wealth while supposedly serving the people for their lifetime. Nor was it intended for one party

to control all three branches of government. But here we are. Senate Majority Leader McConnell cemented the latter would happen by rejecting the thought of giving the American people a $2,000 stimulus check as opposed to $600. Remember, this decision of ignorance was made prior to the Senate elections in Georgia. At that time, the races were too close to call, and every vote counted towards making sure everything that is Washington wasn’t controlled by one party. Whether it’s to poverty-stricken Kentucky, McConnell’s home state, or those most hurting in Georgia, $600 doesn’t go a long way. This decision influenced and made by McConnell and his cronies is an example of how out of touch they are with the people. It was a lost opportunity to help the people and move toward a better future for the post-Trump Republican Party. Before the paint was even dry on what happened in Georgia, all hell broke loose in the Nation’s Capitol. What should have been a matter-of-fact day to hear from each state, officially count the electoral votes, and recognize the 46th president, Joe Biden, became a day of national disgrace. Before I get started on this topic, let me make it clear how very blessed we are by our freedom and rights in the United States

of America. This all begins with respect of one’s freedom and obeying the laws provided. Without this, you don’t have freedom; you have lawlessness. You should lose your right to assemble and peacefully protest when you break any law which gives you the freedom to do so. This begins simply with disorderly conduct. As we have seen across our Country this past year, peaceful protest quickly turns to rioting and a mob mentality if you allow it. There is absolutely no way to justify what occurred in Washington that was billed as “stop the steal,” pro-President Trump event and rally. I understand that most that attended were peaceful and ended up being victims of the day. However, that is how the day will be remembered — by the bad actions of a mob. No matter what their intentions were, no matter if they were even associated with what the rally was to be about — a group of those in attendance stormed and attacked the Capitol. Some broke windows and tore apart congressional offices, some placed pipe bombs in our Nation’s Capitol. This all with the intention to disrupt the process of moving forward with a new president taking the helm. This is pure and simple domestic terrorism. They attacked the hallowed grounds of the Capitol Building with Congress in session for God’s sake. What makes matters worse is we had a sitting President encouraging it. Yes, he denounced it and told everybody to go home, but it was in the way he did so, up to when he realized things were completely out of control. His continued mixed

messages about the election results and what those in attendance should do could be interpreted as a ‘wink, wink’ to those using the day for violence. What did any of them think would be accomplished? That they were going to overturn the results of a Presidential Election? They made sure any grievances and the opportunity for discussion by Congress went an entirely different direction. Nothing good ever comes out of violence or mob mentality. When that line is crossed, whatever the message was to be, is lost. There is no way anyone working for the good can justify attacking Congress, the looting of stores, arson, or taking city blocks hostage for any cause. Your belief of a rigged election, racism, social injustice, police brutality, or whatever the issue is never changed or vindicated by violence, this approach must end. We must recognize and come together in support of the United States of America and President Joe Biden for everyone’s best interest. We must work in the name of good and within the framework of our Constitution to change whatever needs changing in our Nation. We must stop this senseless violence, no matter what flag is being waved, or we will destroy the greatest opportunity of freedom ever exhibited. There is only one Flag that should be waving over our Nation. There is always a reason to justify violence in the name of an injustice. Evil makes sure of this. Once you have crossed that line, you have become the injustice. God Bless America.

I

’ll be honest. In an effort to support small business and help local restaurants stay afloat during the awfulness that was 2020, and seems to be continuing to 2021, I have spent a bit too much time eating. Eating carbs and other unhealthy food to be specific. So it’s time to reel that back in and get my diet back in some semblance of control. I’ve always been a believer that you can’t eat 100 percent clean, 100 percent of the time. So my goal is to eat clean through the week and then leave some — let’s say wiggle room — on the weekends. Now, I’m not going to use the weekends as an excuse to binge eat, but I will definitely give myself more leeway on the weekends. I’ve also picked back up working out, so between the two I’m hoping to get back to a healthier, happier with myself, me soon! So, why am I telling you all this? Well, because eating lower carb meals can get a little stagnant. You can only eat so many salads, or chicken and steamed veggie dinners, before you get bored. And boredom leads to cheating. I thought I would share a couple of recipes that I have on the horizon that look amazing and like a great way to break up the old stand-bys to keep dinner interesting and tasty! Antipasto Stuffed Chicken Ingredients: • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts • 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil

he economic ravages produced by COVID-19 have taken a real financial toll on many families in this area. This toll is causing many families to have problems meeting their nutritional needs. One organization that helps them meet this challenge is the New Love Center, which offers services to families in both Lycoming and Clinton Counties from their headquarters in Jersey Shore. It has six active and regularly scheduled programs, each tailored to address a particular segment of the population; the Center served 64 percent of the households in need for Clinton County and 36 percent of the households in need for Lycoming County for a total of 10,301 homes served during 2020. The six programs, which include: The Food Pantry, The Café, Military Shares, Elder Share, The PB&J Program, and the Backpack Program, have been instrumental in helping those in need bridge the food gap that has become more prevalent and more disruptive to those in need. “While the New Love Center has been here working hard every day for

In addition, The New Love Center partnered with Haven Cupboard to support the food insecure students at Lock Haven University, and they expanded their backpack program into the high schools at Jersey Shore and Renovo. Fox Cline cited the following statistics, notably: For the year, 10,301 households + 822 = 11,123 households served - 11,123 x 36 meals = 400,428 meals - Their Café served 35,219 meals with 1,720 volunteers donating 4,499 hours - Over $1.4 million of food distributed *(17 percent who receive food in Jersey Shore who have five-plus per household receive more than one box) **(box feeds a family of four for three days =

Contact :570-772-3275 The New Love Center’s past and future success depends heavily upon monetary and food donations. As a nonprofit, any donations can be made through their website thenewlovecenter.com. Funding is critical to fuel their far-reaching community efforts, and those who can give and want to make a difference are encouraged to make a donation via the website. A second component is to donate time. Anyone over the age of 13 can volunteer, and with a total of over 3,400 volunteer hours, it is clear that volunteerism is a critical component of the mission of the New Love Center. According to Fox Cline, in 2020, 3,070 volunteers donated 10,795 hours x $20/ hr. = $215,900.00 in time volunteered. Fox Cline concluded by saying, “The New Love Center Food Pantry is operated by all volunteers. In 2020, everyone associated with our incredible ministry here went above and beyond. From our volunteers and donors to our Community Partners and Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, we cannot be prouder of what has been accomplished during this unprecedented year. While there is much uncertainty, the one thing you can be assured of is The New Love Center will be here feeding people.”

party of seven men gave plenty of work to the police on Sunday morning between the hours of 2 and 5 o’clock. The seven were bent on having a good time and all of them are now guests of Sheriff Riddell at his big residence at the corner of William and Third streets. They will remain in the stone building until Wednesday afternoon when they appear before Alderman Stead to answer charges of forcible entry, larceny, and creating an affray. The personnel of the party now in custody are Samuel Compton, Michael O’Hara, Andrew McCloskey, Charles Mosteller, Neil Murnane, James O’Brien, and O. Wolfe. They found trouble in an unusual manner. Either before or after midnight Saturday, they put in an appearance on the lower end of Queen Street, Newberry and broke into a house occupied by Katherine Baker, the woman being away from home at the time. When Mrs. Baker returned to the house, she was astonished to ascertain that strangers were in possession. She informed some of the neighbors and soon as possible Patrolman Bair was notified. This was about 2 o’clock. The officer hastened to a telephone and informed headquarters of the circumstances and requested that several policemen be sent to his aid. A cab was hired from a livery stable and

Roundsman Pincher and Patrolman Martin and Stitzer were detailed on the case in order to render all possible aid to Patrolman Bair. When the squad of policemen reached the scene of the disturbance it was ascertained that the uninvited occupants of the Baker residence were making merry and indulging in boisterous behavior. The policemen raided the house and captured all of the revelers. A half-barrel of beer was confiscated by the officers as were two dressed chickens. The fowls had been stolen from the coop of Michael Seeger, the man occupying the adjoining house. They killed and dressed the chickens and were about to be put into the oven to be roasted when the preparations for the feast were interrupted by the unexpected arrival of the officers. The policemen brought the half-barrel of beer, the chickens and a pan of feathers to City Hall. During the day the chickens were given to the rightful owner, but the beer and feathers will be held as evidence when the matter is aired in court. The cab was compelled to make two trips to Newberry to convey the seven prisoners to the City Hall. The last quota of offenders were placed behind bars by 5 o’clock. The men forced entry into the home of Mrs. Baker. She claims they stole two dollars in a bureau in the bedroom. Mr. Seeger claims the men stole five other of his chickens several weeks ago.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Once Spoke at Lycoming College By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

F

ive years before Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his immortal “I Have A Dream” speech, he spoke here in Williamsport to students at a chapel service at Clarke Chapel at Lycoming College on April 23, 1958. He was not yet the worldrenowned iconic figure that he would later become. He was then head of the Montgomery Improvement Association, the organization that coordinated the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 and 1956. One woman who was a student then, has a particularly vivid memory of Dr. King’s appearance at Lycoming. Ruth Perry Hodge was a senior at Lycoming and about to graduate that semester. Her father, the Rev. Houston Perry, was pastor of a local church, the Shiloh Baptist Church. She had the thrill of meeting King following his speech. “Dr. King spoke at our chapel service and I was a member of the college choir that performed before the speech and Floyd Todd and I were the only AfricanAmerican members of the choir. Dr. King asked to speak with the two of us after the speech,” Hodge told Webb Weekly. “It was a thrill to meet him and

he signed my program from the chapel service and I still have it and it was one of my prized possessions. His speech was awesome and very inspiring.” Hodge remembers growing up under Jim Crow segregation in Virginia and Dr. King’s speech made her more determined than ever to do what she could to bring about racial equality and to knock down the walls of segregation. “The title of Dr. King’s speech at Lycoming was “Facing the Challenge of A New Age” and I wanted to do everything I could to make that ‘new age’ a positive one for African-Americans,” Hodge said. Hodge would go on to work at the Army War College and the Military History Institute at Carlisle, first as a secretary and later as a librarian. She was inspired to earn her Master’s in Library Science. She would eventually work as an archivist at the Pennsylvania State Archives before retiring in 2001. She was a strong advocate for the study and appreciation of African-American History and helped to develop a guide to significant African-American historical sites in Pennsylvania. Dale Bower, also a member of the choir has strong memories of King’s speech.

“I remember looking up and seeing the balcony of Clarke Chapel filled with black people from the local black community,” Bower recalled. “Dr. King’s speech was very inspirational. It was a great experience for me. I remember one of things he said was, ‘if you can’t be a tall oak on the mountainside, then the best spruce in the valley you can be.’ I think that was his way of telling us to do the best we could be in our lives.” Bower said there was a recording of the speech but unfortunately, it was either lost or stolen. Bower graduated from Lycoming in 1960 and went on to work at the college for more than 30 years as the Director of Planned Giving and later as the Alumni Director. Published reports at the time of Dr. King’s speech at Lycoming reported, “We in the 20th Century are experiencing the birth of a new age; we are privileged to live in one of the most momentous ages of all history— an age when a new world is coming into being,” King said. “We stand between two ages,” he said, “the dying old and emerging new; an age in which inter-group and interpersonal living becomes a possibility.” Cautioning listeners that the people of the world must not allow technology to outdistance theology, Dr. King emphasized the need to keep moral and

spiritual progress abreast with scientific and theological progress. “We must be ready for the challenges of the new age — ready with understanding and goodwill — both the oppressor and oppressed he added, continuing with the thought that we must meet physical force with soul force, work passionately and unrelentingly for first class citizenship.” He told students, “Seek to discover your life’s work, and do it well. We must be ready to face the opportunities and challenges: whatever your life work turns out to be — do it well.” The night before King’s speech at Lycoming, he spoke at Bucknell and then came to Lycoming and was the guest for dinner with a small group of Lycoming faculty members. Later he participated in a question-and-answer period in the Science Auditorium on campus. A luncheon in King’s honor was held at the Lycoming Hotel after his speech before he went onto Philadelphia on his way to his home in Montgomery, where he was pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. King was invited back to speak at Lycoming College during the early 1960s but the press of events of the Civil Rights Movement and his leadership of the Southern Christian Leadership Council prevented him from doing so.

A spiritual gift is a miraculous ability given by God to meet specific needs in the Body of Christ (inward) and the Mission of God (outward). A spiritual gift can be fully utilized, even if it is not identified or intentionally developed. Long before spiritual gift “how-to” books and gift inventories existed, believers effectively served the Body of Christ and the Mission of God. You don’t have to be a Biblical scholar or a 30-year veteran of Sunday school to serve in your spiritual gift. All you must do is start serving. A spiritual gift is usually recognized and affirmed by the Church — and of-

ten before the possessor even realizes they have it. Ignorance, confusion, and division have caused the spiritual gifts to fall off the Church’s radar. The result is a small group of overworked people in the Body of Christ. That’s not God’s design. Every believer has a gift — and every believer needs to serve faithfully in it. If you’re not serving, then the Body is suffering — and you need to be aware of it. What a Spiritual Gift Is Not A spiritual gift is not reliant on anything other than God’s Spirit and our availability. It is a miraculous gift given by God regardless of our circumstances. It is not reliant on our abilities, personality, experiences, resources, education, IQ, or any other factor. A spiritual gift is not about us or how it makes us feel or look; it is about love. Watch out for pride and selfishness they can turn a spiritual gift into a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. See I Corinthians 13. Spiritual gifts are not static. They are dynamic — full of energy and purpose, able to get things going, and to get things done. Their dynamic nature also makes them adaptable to address needs as they arise. The Giver of the gifts is sovereign — and He chooses the

gifts and their duration based on what is needed in the Body and the mission. Prepare to be surprised! Cautions About Spiritual Gifts Don’t expect to discover your gift(s) while sitting around; spiritual gifts are discovered while serving. If you don’t know what your spiritual gift is, then do something. Yes, do it now! If God wants you to continue doing it, He will affirm you — and so will the Church. And if you’re serving in the wrong area, then your faithfulness will open doors to the right area of service. Someone once referred to it as failing forward. Be faithful in the little things, and He will make you master over many. See Matthew 25. Sometimes spiritual gifts arrive polished, while others show up in-therough. Remember, they are miraculous, so how they arrive is up to God and His design. Don’t be jealous of someone else’s gift — and don’t take pride in your own. Take the gift He has given and get to work. God will take care of the polishing. Don’t seek a particular gift; instead, seek to be filled with and fully yielded to the Giver of the gifts. The practice of seeking a particular gift has many pitfalls — and the Church has suffered

deep divisions because of it. Don’t project your gift onto others. You may find great joy and purpose in your gift, but that doesn’t mean you should expect everyone else to have it. Be cautious about announcing your gift to others. If you need to announce it, then you probably don’t have it — or you’re struggling with pride. The gifts, when offered humbly and consistently, have a beautiful way of announcing themselves. Don’t exalt yourself - it always smells better when God does it. This article wasn’t intended to answer all your questions about spiritual gifts. In Seizing Your Divine Moment, Erwin McManus says, “Don’t look for God to fill in all the blanks. Don’t wait for Him to remove all the uncertainty. Realize He may actually increase the uncertainty and leverage all the odds against you, just so you will know in the end that it wasn’t your gifts but His power through your gifts that fulfilled His purpose in your life.” My friend, God, has gifted you for greatness in His Kingdom, so get to work. Do it! Do it now! You can read more about spiritual gifts in these passages of Scripture: Romans 12:6-8, I Corinthians 12:8-10 and 28, Ephesians 4:11, and 1 Peter 4:9-10.

I have been to three different places looking for a good pair of hearing aids, and I will never go anywhere else. I can hear people talking in converstations with groups. I could never hear in groups with my old hearing aids. The price was great and well worth the hearing. The extra microphone on the hearing aid really does make a difference. official 2021 colors are just not complementary to your skin tone, hair color, eye color, or personal preferences. There’s no point in wearing a color that makes you look sallow or doesn’t go with any other thing in your closet. Instead, take these shades as an inspiration/starting point to explore similar tones in the gray and yellow color family. Instead of a lemony-yellow, you may prefer a buttery-yellow or a shade of orange to brighten your look this winter. If gray makes you feel down in the dumps (and we certainly don’t need any more of that), then opt for a shiny silver to add sparkle to your mood and your ensemble. I think it’s safe to say that no one can predict what the year ahead has in store, but hopefully, no matter what color you are or wear, you’ll find a balance of strength and hope in 2021. If you’re ready to fully commit to Illuminating, consider investing in a statement coat that’s doused in the hue. Tie in a slate gray handbag like Balenciaga’s for a well-rounded look. Last but not least, you’ll want to consider the color combo when sneaker shopping — which Cariuma just made simple as Pantone’s official footwear partner. Shop the 2021-readied shoe in a neutral gray, and pair it with a yellow slip skirt like ATM Anthony Thomas Melillo’s.

Breathe some new life into your gray sweatpants, or invest in a new pair, and wear with a chunky yellow pullover. This will surely brighten up your face on your next Zoom call while keeping you comfy and cozy. If you’re back in the office here in 2021 and your dress code allows, liven up a gray suit with a yellow t-shirt. If tees are not appropriate, then bring color in with a bright bag for work. If you’re fully ready to dive into the sunshine shade, then go big with a tailored yellow coat paired with a slate gray handbag. I’d recommend keeping the silhouettes simple and sleek when wearing head-to-toe yellow. Anything baggy or overly-detailed can come off a bit juvenile when working with this bold, Big Bird-adjacent hue. Look for tailored pieces, like cropped trousers, single-breasted blazers, and A-line dresses, and pair them with gray tights, t-shirts, or knits. I love the idea of a bright yellow pant with a gray turtleneck and a brown (or silver) loafer for work. Activewear is a simple way to access this color combo. Performance leggings, track jackets, and running sneakers will be designed with these colors in mind here in 2021. So be on the lookout for graphic prints featuring both shades when heading back to the gym. Of course, you may find that these

wasn’t always overweight. I honestly thought I would never have to worry about it. My legs were always so long and skinny, and I was built just like Gram Perry. She was always so skinny without even trying, and even my mom always said I was like my grandmother. I never had to worry about what I ate. I was young, active, and could eat whatever without gaining a pound. When I was born, I weighed 7.7lbs. I was a scrawny little thing with not an ounce of baby fat.

My Pap Liddick told my mom I was the skinniest baby he ever saw. Up till I was about 16, I was very active. I mean, I was always riding my bicycle or rollerblading. We lived in a perfect neighborhood to do so in Old Lycoming that took us right to the bike path. Ya know, back in the good old days when you could be gone all day, and your parents told you, “be back by dinnertime.” Now you have to worry about everyone and everything. As I got older, I got into soccer. I was

I could play kickball in my backyard anytime, but our cabins were a treat when we got to go up to Blossburg or Salladasburg. All my cousins would be back playing sports, and I would be out riding. I didn’t need the exercise, so why not have fun sitting my butt on a seat and given er’ gas baby! Little did I know, that would someday change. I was livin’ the dream of eating what I wanted, when I wanted, with no intended exercise. When I hit the high school years, I quit soccer. I didn’t want to play for the high school, and I remember my mom being bummed about that. Once I grew out of

AYSO, I was done. I was coming into high school, and girls were testy and rude. I was not a fan. (Sorry, but that’s literally why I didn’t want to play.) Yea, I was testy and rude, but not stuck up and mean; there is a difference! I always treated everyone with respect and never bullied. Don’t get me going on that age, and how cruel they can be. I was always the first to protect the underdogs, and thankful I wasn’t overweight through my school years. Kids can be so cruel, and I wouldn’t have taken it. I probably honestly would have decked someone. Kids can’t help it, especially the younger ones. I was blessed with a momma who made

us homecooked meals each night. Always meat, starch, fruit, and veggie. Never too much fast food or processed, boxed foods. We always had snacks and sodas, but my parents weren’t parents who limited stuff like that. My brother and I were healthy, thin, and active. We knew soda was downstairs in the fridge. Dad always had sodas, but I was never a soda person. Mom always had sweet tea made in the upstairs fridge, but I was never a huge tea person. I did drink it, but water was always my favorite, still is. It’s my go-to drink, and I thank God for that! I can’t imagine if I was a huge soda drinker how chunky I would’ve gotten. Guys, I don’t want to drink my

he warm, undulating light cast off by a candle adds an unmatched ambiance to a space. Multiply that candle by many and it can create a truly awe-inspiring atmosphere. Candlelight is a must at any evening wedding and can be a key to a successful party as guests tend to loosen their inhibitions in a dimly lit room. While candlelight can add a warming glow to postwedding festivities, it can play a significant role during the ceremony itself. Flickering flames within a dimly lit chapel or alternative ceremony site can establish an intimate setting in which a couple exchanges vows. Candles can even become a focal point of the ceremony. For example, some couples may opt to light a unity candle during their ceremonies. The unity candle symbolizes the joining of the families and merging of two individuals into one blended family. Representatives from both families, typically the parents of the couple, come up and light a candle for each side of the family. Then the bride

and groom will light a center candle from these two candles. The center candle then represents the unity of the new family and their commitment to each other. Apart from the unity candle, there may be other ways candles play a role in the ceremony. They can be religious and secular. Candles can symbolize different things, including: • casting away darkness and showing how love can brighten life, • candles can provide direction and draw couples together, • a candle can represent the love that lights up the couple’s world, and • the warmth of a relationship mirrored in the warmth of the candle. Apart from symbolism and ambiance, there is an added benefit to including candles in a wedding ceremony. Brides magazine says that the amber light given off can make for beautiful photos as well. Speak with a photographer about the best ways to arrange candles to fully take advantage of their photographic potential.

until the last person leaves the dance floor at the end of the night. Many couples love leafing through their wedding albums for the rest of their lives together, but guests also may enjoy reliving the night. The photo sharing social media platform Instagram is a great way for couples and their guests to relive the special moment a couple ties the knot and all the ensuing fun at the reception. Create a weddingspecific Instagram page and post all the photos you want to share. Include guests who could not attend the festivities. No matter how hard couples may try to pick a date that’s convenient for all of their guests, some invitees will inevitably decline the invitation. That’s especially true while the world continues to confront the COVID-19 pandemic. Elderly guests or loved ones with underlying medical conditions that make them more vulnerable to getting seriously ill from COVID-19 may be forced to reluctantly decline their invitations. But couples can utilize social media platforms like Facebook Live to include

ince its inception decades ago, social media has changed the world. As the popularity of social media exploded in the early part of the 21st century, various platforms emerged and ultimately affected movements pertaining to everything from politics to social justice to charitable efforts. Social media also has emerged as a great tool for couples on the cusp of getting married. The following are some useful ways that couples can employ social media into their wedding planning. Create your own hashtag. A couplespecific hashtag can be a great and simple way to share information on Twitter, which remains one of the most popular social media platforms across the globe. Your own hashtag can alert friends and family who are on Twitter whenever you post new information and photos. Share a photo album online. Photographers serve as something akin to unofficial documentarians on couples’ wedding days. Many photographers are there from the moment the bride begins to get ready

loved ones who couldn’t make it in real time. Encourage others to pitch in with the planning. Planning a wedding should be fun, and what better way to add to the fun factor than encouraging loved ones to share their ideas via a social media platform like Pinterest? Couples can create a Pinterest board and ask interested friends and family members to share ideas on everything from attire to decor to floral arrangements. This can be an especially effective way to involve bridesmaids and groomsmen if social distancing guidelines and travel

The Evolution of Wedding Favors

W

edding favors have changed — and in many cases for the better. Favors have evolved from the inexpensive trinkets purchased in bulk into more personalized mementos that guests can cherish. Today’s couples are interested in customizing their weddings and offering guests something meaningful, or at the very least, edible, so that favors don’t immediately get relegated to the trash can. According to Heather Jones of Wente Vineyards in California, favors have moved from “goodie bags” toward items that are experimental and fun. Wedding planners from across the

country offer these wedding favor trends that couples may want to incorporate into their own celebrations. Welcome bags Rather than take-home bags, welcome bags have replaced the traditional favor trinket at some weddings. Many weddings have become multi-day events that ask guests traveling from out of town to attend a wedding weekend. To help greet them and make their experience memorable, couples may fill a gift bag with items guests can use or enjoy during their stay — like a bottle of locally sourced maple syrup or some handmade soaps from a nearby shopkeeper. Experience gifts

Instead of a candle or a monogrammed cake server, think of experiences to offer guests. A coupon for free drinks at a nearby brewery, a tour of a local attraction while guests are in town or a group excursion for guests attending a destination wedding can be fun and will help guests create lasting memories. Charitable donations Some couples feel that favors are wasteful and would rather set aside a portion of their wedding budgets toward giving back. In such situations, a donation to charity in guests’ names can be the way to go. Guests can vote on two favorite charities advertised on a special table at the wedding reception. The one with the most votes will get the proceeds. Late-night snacks

Anynt Eve

ALES

L&S RENTA Y T R A P

After a night of celebrating, some guests may want the festivities to continue, but may need some extra sustenance to make it through a few more hours. Some couples are eschewing traditional favors in lieu of making room for extra food or beverage expenses that can include after-party treats. These may run the gamut from woodfired pizzas to food truck vendors to extra desserts. A tasty take-home option also may be given, such as fresh zeppolis or beignets, or even a personalized bottle of wine. Even if the food and drink is not consumed right away, there’s a good chance it will hit the spot when guests return to their hotel rooms. Wedding favors are changing to keep up with the times and keep guests feeling extra special.

While I am sure most of them were very nice people and good at their jobs, there were some that made fun of overweight people and shamed other trainers. At the very least, these people rained judgement down upon the Facebook universe with what people should and shouldn’t do as well as what they ought to look and act like. They judged the most minuscule exercise technique mistakes, every tiny wrinkle on a person’s skin, an ounce of fat; you name it. At worst, some of them were

downright brutal and would post hurtful and poisonous comments. Frankly, it led to me purging my Facebook account of hundreds of fitness professionals whom I had never met anyway. Who were they to judge, and where would it end? I’m not saying we should never judge. In extreme cases, our moral compasses kick into high gear in reproach of someone that hurts a child or some such case. For the most part, however, I say people should be given the latitude to do what they want or look the way they want. Live and let live! If someone is trying to improve themselves, instead of discouraging them for being overweight, they should be encouraged

and complimented for their positive efforts. When I teach a wellness class or train a client, upon our first meeting, I make a point that I do not and will not judge. I am there simply to offer my help if they want it. If they should decide to become a client, my goals are to educate, encourage, and motivate. My job is to build up, not tear down. As we move into 2021, I hope all of us can take a lesson from Vaughn’s character, Peter LaFleur, and encourage our friends, neighbors, and fellow humans. Try not to judge, encourage, and accept people as they are while helping them to become the best version of themselves.

way you are. But if you feel like losing a few pounds, eating healthier, and making a few friends in the process, then Joe’s is the place for you.” Unlike just about everywhere else, Vaughn’s character doesn’t shame overweight people or put down other gyms or methods. He simply offers acceptance and help. When Facebook first became popular, I merged it with my very extensive list of business contacts. What that means is with the push of a button, thousands of “friend” requests were sent out in an instant. Once I started to get past 600 or 700 “friends”, their contacts started to reach out to me, and things just started

The Backyard Gardner…

Introducing the Backyard Gardener

L

iving in a town, borough, or even the city does not mean you cannot have a garden. You do not need acres of land, big tractors, and a barn. All it takes is a little time, garden soil, and yard space, or even garden pots. I have lived in Pennsylvania my whole life. I come from four generations of farming. Yes, I have downsized from the size of farming my great grandfather did on the farm that is still in the family today. I remember watching my grandfather and father work small gardens they had in the backyards of their homes. I would think to myself, why not just go to the store and

let the kids pick what they wanted to grow and guided them along the way. My wife suggested that I start an Instagram account to show that gardening doesn’t have to be difficult and to give tips and tricks that I have learned over the years. The Instagram name is @gizenskigarden. Please feel free to follow along and ask any questions you may have. I was excited and nervous when Jimmy and Steph asked that I write an article on garden tips. After talking with family and friends, the decision was made — time to put pen to paper. Each week I will go over tips and tricks for you to have a garden or even just some plants on your porch. I hope you follow each week to see what is new in the Backyard Gardener.

buy the fruits and vegetables? Over time, I’ve come to find out why they did this for our families. My wife and I had a cute little home in Williamsport. One day our neighbor asked if we would like to use some of his garden beds to plant some vegetables. Well, that is all it took. The next thing I knew, we had ourselves a garden! After a few seasons, it was time I put my own garden in our own yard. Well, if you know me, I had to think this out. Decide on the layout, make blueprints, find the perfect lumber and

the best location in our yard. I loved that little garden. Then, my wife and I decided it was time to move. My first request to the real estate agent was that I needed room to build my dream garden. We found the perfect home for our family, we Charlie moved in, and then you Gizenski guessed it — it was time to build the garden. After the garden shed and boxes were complete, it was time to start growing fruits and vegetables. I knew I wanted to include the family on this adventure, so I

recent trip to Harrisburg gave me the opportunity to pay a long-overdue visit to a long-time friend, a one-time “on-the-court” adversary, then a teammate, and forever my brother Larry Moore. His lovely wife Lana had made Larry a scrapbook of his glory days as a player for the Williamsport High School Millionaires back in the 1970s. Of course, we turned immediately to the pages depicting “The Game” in 1972, when my upstart Bishop Neumann Knights took

then young and inexperienced Knights had almost done the unthinkable and came close to then pulling an upset of major proportions, losing that game by just 11. Things looked ripe for that upset this year. The Knights were led into this monumental battle by new first-year head Coach Gary Koons. Their returning starting-five consisted of Mike Bloom, Mike Brownlee, Chris Pellegrino, Dave Hane, and myself. Significant bench players included Keith Burkhart, Mike Fischer, Mike Kirby, Gary Welteroth, Lester Loner, and Joe Clark. Williamsport’s impressive five were: Sophomores Bobbie Janeski, and Sam Washington, Senior Teddy Wilson — the only returning starter — and seniors Larry Moore and Steve “Smoke” Patton, and were coached by the wily veteran

Charlie Blackburn. Williamsport would stay exclusively with their starting five, the entire game, while Neumann reached deep into their bench to try and keep pace. The Knights were rated as the “pick ‘em” by the experts, so let the game begin! Neumann led 17-16, and hopes were high at the end of one quarter, but Williamsport took the half-time lead with an impressive 2nd quarter 13-2 run, leading 46 to 36 at the half. At the end of three, Williamsport held a 67-55 lead. While Neumann held a 14-10 scoring edge in the 4th quarter, we could not get the ball away from the ambidextrous and elusive Teddy Wilson, and Williamsport ran out the clock with the game ending at 77 to 69 Williamsport. Williamsport was let in scoring by Steve Patton with 23, Bobby Janeski with 21,

Larry with 15, Sam Washington with 12, and Teddy Wilson with 6. Neumann was led by my 24, Mike Brownlee’s 18, Dave Hane’s 9, Chris Pelligrino’s 6, and Mike Bloom’s 4. Mike Fischer contributed eight off the bench. At the end of our spirited reminiscing about the details of what took place during the game — the matchups and who schooled who — Larry and I both agreed that while those specific moments were special, inthe-long-run what is most cherished about being a part of “The Game” are the many lasting friendships, forged in the heat of “friendly” competition, like Larry’s and mine, which has now flourished over the past 50 years. One memorable game and a lifelong friendship — how special!

The newly-minted “Magic Dome” was literally packed to the rafters, as 3,200 hundred raging fans — an area attendance record — awaited the marque match up — the fast-paced Knights, a small local Single-A Catholic High School, boasting an 11-3 record, taking on the highly vaunted, then 4-A Millionaires, with a deceptive 8-5 record. Normally an indescribable overmatch, the Knights were off to a great start and very focused on pulling off the biggest upset in years. While this year playing almost entirely a different cast of Williamsport players, the year before being the Mike Baggett, Lou Gingrich, and Brian Clay era, these same,

ore than three million people are injured every year due to car accidents, with more than two million resulting in permanent injuries. There are in excess of 40,000 deaths due to car accidents every year. Where is the outrage? What can be done about such a horrible carnage of death and destruction? I have the simple solution that would be guaranteed to work — a national speed limit of ten miles an hour. Now, I know some would scoff at this, but no one will get killed driving at ten miles an hour. That is bicycle speed. Sure, it would take us a lot longer to get from point A to point B, but that is the sacrifice we must make — if it saves a life, who can argue? To those who claim this proposal will cripple our economy, we must ask, what is more, important than saving lives — getting your Amazon shipment a week later or saving Grandma? Of course, cars and trucks are designed to go much faster, and yes, everything will end up costing more. But we are in the midst of a national emergency, and these are just the sacrifices we must make. Millions of

lives and hundreds of millions of dollars in medical costs are at stake! I hope it is obvious that this is a ridiculous proposal. Everyone can see that. Then perhaps someone can explain the difference in shutting down a national economy almost to a standstill to deal with a flu virus? Yes, it is serious, and many have come down with it, but virtually all of them recover. To date, Pennsylvania has had 660,580 verified cases of COVID with 16,179 deaths. That means that even without factoring in the age disparity (where those over 70 are the most highly vulnerable), the survival rate is 99.975 percent. Across the entire US, the Center for Disease Control admits that the survival rate overall is approximately 99.5 percent, and for those under 70

published a study that noted that deaths attributed to COVID-19 only account for about two-thirds of the increase in deaths in the United States. The other one-third apparently comes from delaying medical care, economic hardships, emotional stress, and suicides. What could be causing those stressors? Is it the virus or the response to the virus that has created so many hardships that have ended lives? Ten months ago, when we sought to “flatten the curve,” temporary shutdowns had some logic. But there is no logic now, only ideology. With (hopefully) an effective vaccine, we can begin to move on from a global financial catastrophe caused by political hubris armed with supposedly irrefutable scientific wisdom that has proven to be an emperor with no clothes. One of the drumbeats from the Lycoming County Commissioners is that we must, absolutely must, get our businesses open and our people working again. However, the constraints come from high above and cannot be revoked without punishment in some form from the state for non-compliance. I am making it a daily habit of writing my governor (https://www.governor. pa.gov/contact) and would encourage others to do so. This nonsense must come to an end before we go over the cliff permanently.

years of age, it is 99.997 percent. This is a horrible disease, no question, but as it is a novel virus, it will also run its course. The “science” that has dictated the isolation tactics has certainly mitigated some of the effects, to be sure, but has not significantly impacted stopping the spread of the virus or lowering the death rate. For example, Florida has a 96 per 100,000 people death rate from COVID (survival rate of 99.9 percent) and has practiced much less restrictive practices than high restrictive New York state, which is almost twice as high, 188 per 100,000 (survival rate of 99.8 percent). The same thing is seen worldwide. Belarus, one of the most autocratic countries in the world, has surprisingly taken a rather laissez-faire attitude toward COVID and has the lowest death rate from the disease on the continent. The highest in Europe is Belgium, actually one of the highest fatality rates in the world, yet practices all the accepted standards of masking, social distancing, shutdowns, etc. There are highly respected empirical studies that clearly show that globally there is no association, let alone causation, between lockdowns and COVID deaths. But what about the increased number of deaths in the United States in 2020? The Journal of the American Medical Association

SNOWPLOWS

very year, throughout the fall months, Mother Nature takes care of all of her creatures as they prepare to weather through the upcoming winter months. It is pretty amazing the way some of these birds, animals and insects prepare for and adjust their daily routines in order to make it through the freezing temperatures that are sometimes accompanied by snow and ice. Some “hole up” for the season by hibernating, some merely hunker down and brave the weather and yet others head to warmer climates until the spring thaws and the return of more temperate days. The first generalized group is those that remain in the area and maintain a lower level of activity through the winter months. This group includes our whitetail deer, numerous predators, turkeys and many songbirds. In the later part of fall, the deer accumulate whatever layer of fat they might need through the winter by foraging throughout the nights for field corn, soybeans, clovers and grasses as well as one of their preferred foods – the acorns. Bucks will lose some of their fat, if not a good portion of it, during the rut, as they abandon their interest in food and they pursue estrus does. After the rut, they will return to feeding as much as possible to replenish their fat layer. When you hike through the woods and

the winter months, particularly after a fresh layer of snow, you can’t help but observe fewer deer tracks than you encounter throughout the rest of the year. So, where do they go? Most will remain within their normal home range, and merely reduce their activity level as they attempt to conserve their energy and stretch the use of their fat reserves. Some will head deeper into the woods – into yard areas. These yards are more commonly seen in the northernmost states and the Canadian provinces, but this “yarding” activity can occur in our area as well. By moving to these areas, usually with thicker cover, deer can reduce their exposure to wind and by being in a larger group they can be more alert to predators. Many folks are under the misconception that our native Eastern bluebirds migrate south for the winter, but instead, they merely move deeper into the woods for the season. On warm, sunny days you may see a bluebird, but generally they remain in the forests until warm spring weather brings them back into the open in search for nesting locations and whatever food might be available. Black bears are typical of our hibernators. Yet, they are not true hibernators like bats and groundhogs. A bear’s body temperature and heart rate remain close to normal during the winter, and they spend these months in a state of deep sleep, rather than true hibernation. Bears don’t normally dig a den

springtime. Most ducks will also head south for the winter, while some will stop in the Chesapeake Bay area for the wintertime. But the most amazing story of migration is that undertaken by the monarch butterflies. They are the only butterfly that makes a twoway migration like birds. Traveling 50 – 100 miles per day (the longest distance recorded was 265 miles in one day!), their journey of sometimes over 3,000 miles can take up to two months to where they winter in the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico. These represent but a few of the varied ways that birds, animals and insects adapt their daily routine to survive and thrive through the winter months. Some of their stories can be told by observing tracks in the snow on your next winter hike.

If you are hiking during the winter, you might come across bear tracks. More often than not, they are the result of a male bear, or boar, out in search of food. The males do not sleep as deeply as the females, particularly females that are either pregnant or have cubs with them. And then there are the migrators. We all can recall the sight and sound of Canada geese and snow geese as they move south for the winter and as they pass through again in the

popularity grew, and new innovations came along — enter the hand auger. This auger was literally a giant drill bit that was powered by cranking it, much like the old non-powered drill that grandpa had in the tool shed. These augers actually served the purpose quite well until somebody took it a step further and introduced the gas-powered ice auger. This auger was a bit bulky and heavy, but it certainly carved a quick hole in the ice. This auger was especially desirable if you were drilling a lot of holes; more ice-holes made it possible to cover more water and thereby increase the chances of taking more fish. I had to keep up with all the trends, so my brother and I purchased one of the

MURRAY

gas-powered augers. The larger, heavier piece of equipment — and the need to lug gas along — was a bit of a pain, but it sure made hole drilling easier and quicker. Not too surprising; however, it wasn’t long until someone came up with an even better idea — a battery-operated auger, much quieter, not as heavy, and just as effective at drilling holes. Now by this time, I didn’t think it could get any better until another innovation came along — enter a hand-held, 20-volt DeWalt drill — very likely the same drill you are using for your carpenter projects. A simple attachment makes it possible to attach the drill to your six- or eightinch ice auger, and with a 20-volt lithium battery, you can probably drill all the

holes you and your buddy will need all day. Another simple attachment with an elastic strap prevents the bit from sinking into the depths should the bit become loose. Make sure you add the strap; I got the strap after one of my ice augers made its way into the depths of Blanchard Dam. The beauty of this new ice drilling apparatus is that it is much lighter and less bulky. In my opinion, it drills even more efficiently than the gas or larger battery-operated augers. Well, now that you know how we get through that ice barrier in the days to come, we will take a closer look at the equipment used to actually pull the quarry from the depths — tip-ups and ice fishing rods.

surface of that body of water before you begin the act of fishing. Years ago, in the 60s, when I started ice fishing, the common tool for poking a hole in the ice was what was known as a “spud bar.” The spud bar was a five- or six-foot heavy metal bar with a flattened, sharp edge at the business end; a strap at the top end and around your wrist help ensure that the bar didn’t end up at the bottom of the lake. That strap didn’t always get fastened, and I know for a fact that there are a number of spud bars standing upright at the bottom of a number of lakes. The spud bar was hardly on the “cutting edge” of technology, but it got the job done. As time went on and the sport’s

become a member would have to receive the three-quarters vote, and in some instances that could be very difficult.” Depending on how things may be played out regarding the pandemic, the league has tentative plans to hold a league championship game for both boys’ and girls’ basketball on February 19. The games would be played at Montgomery, bringing together the first-place teams from each division. Should indoor seating still be limited, the gym would be cleared between the girl’s game at 5:00 p.m. and the boy’s game at 7:30 p.m. Regarding a league start-up, once some restrictions are lifted, the league intends to pick-up the league schedule as it was originally constituted, Turner hopes. “The league feels that it will be better to pick-up the existing schedule and have the teams try and reschedule the games they have already missed, based upon the individual school’s circumstances. This is mainly because of game officials. Once we start shifting games around, it would greatly complicate the availability of officials. Right now, those game dates are locked into official’s schedules, so pending the pandemic or weather problems, that would be one worry we won’t have to deal with.” It is expected that the conference’s Junior High School basketball teams will follow the same scheduling format once games are permitted to resume. Like all other area high schools and their fans, the Mid-Penn Conference is eager to get started, especially with their new-look format.

is divided into two five-team divisions, the East and the West. East Divisions schools include Benton, Columbia-Montour VoTech, Millville, Northwest, and Sullivan County. The West Division is comprised of Bucktail, Montgomery, Muncy, South Williamsport, and St. John Neumann. The schools play the teams in their division twice and face the other division once, giving them a 13-game league schedule. This format permits schools to play nine non-conference games of their choosing. The conference has 11 member schools. Sugar Valley Charter School competes as a Mid-Penn Conference wrestling school. “We formed the divisions with respect to geographic location,” Turner added. “In doing so, we recognized travel is an issue for both administrations and athletic directors, especially when you consider the locations of Bucktail and Northwest. Bucktail has been very congenial about trying to schedule Saturday games for a team like Northwest. We’ve also discussed playing some earlier time slots, so rather than starting at 6:00 p.m., we might start at 5:00 p.m., depending on what night it is. So, we are open to some rearranging to make that work. “Although the size of member schools has been talked about, the league has nothing in writing stating that we are going to be a Class A or AA league. The thinking is we have a process that allows a school to apply for conference membership. The conference was begun as a basketball conference, so there has to be some reassurance that member schools are going to play basketball. So, any school that may want to

t is an obvious point. But one that needs to be repeated. Rioting is wrong. Period. I am no expert. Nor do I have any answers. But what went down last week is extremely frustrating. I won’t elaborate on the embarrassment. I can only condemn it. I will not point any fingers. Just don’t do it. Rioting is bad even when there seems to be a just cause. Claiming the election

was rigged is not. I also condemned the riots and looting that occurred this summer. I do believe in some type of reform, but burning buildings and breaking windows is wrong. Most of the damage caused by these riots hurts innocent people. Violence and the violation of personal property does not help the local economy. The negative economic impacts always

linger. I can only imagine such extreme circumstances. Are rioting and destruction the only means to address a great evil? I totally get it, and some Jamie Spencer may argue that such occurrences are just and can lead to war. Anyone defending and participating in these riots needs some actual proof. Mobsters do not need a reason. This is what is troubling. Most folks are just out looking for mayhem. Refusing to accept the outcome of the election has only added to the situation. Our commander in chief only fueled the fire. I don’t believe that he is individually responsible. But his supporters were inspired by his rhetoric. Personally, I am not a fan. He has done some good, but he has also done some bad. I also do not wish any bad will or damage to him or his supporters. I can only hope for a peaceful transition. The

jury is still out. A few weeks back, I wrote a column. My words were simple, and I called for more love. It is more important now than ever. I am still very concerned about what is going on. I see division everywhere. Even here in the 570. I do not understand all of the hatred. Rioting is wrong. We need to find a better way — a common ground. I am what they call an INDEPENDENT — a tree-loving transcendentalist. I vote for the best candidate. Period. I place no bearing on their affiliation. I wish more people would look at things this way. The world would be a better, much safer place. WE THE PEOPLE, are what make AMERICA great. I apologize for the rant this week. Looking forward to getting back to normal here soon. The basketball season is now underway. Fingers are crossed. Hopefully, everyone can stay safe. Good luck to all teams. Hang in there and remember to spread more love. Cheers.
