Setting the Record Straight

Call 570-326-9322

I

have always made myself available to everyone with my contact information available on page 4. I encourage people to call or text me. Many email. This often leads to coffee, lunch, or a meeting in my conference room. I am not a believer in social media, although Webb Weekly can be found there. My column last week received an overwhelming amount of attention. As always, I tried to reply to everyone. Most that responded were positive, some had questions, and then there were those upset beyond belief. All of the latter seem to be focused on one paragraph. The intention of my column “No Number of Wrongs Ever Justify a Right” was to be a positive way to completely denounce violence and mob mentality in every way — no matter the cause. When any assembled protest crosses the line of peaceful, it’s wrong. In addition, I appealed to everyone to come together in support of our Nation. Along the way, I touched on our Constitution, Mitch McConnell, and the dangers of a mob mentality going unchecked. I never thought my article would be perceived as a way to divide, insult, or anger, anyone. After talking with a gentleman for over an hour and confirming his thinking with people that know me well, I understood, and it all made sense. I thought those

that read me know who I am and would never waiver from my beliefs. However, in today’s world of mistrusting the media and people just being flat out fed up, I learned again why to never assume. So, just a reminder, I love God, Country, and Family. I stand by the Constitution as intended. I always vote for the best candidates no matter what party. I am completely grounded in conservative, moderate thinking, as I believe the majority of our Nation is. I understand why most conservative, beyond conservative, including President Trump supporters, are angered beyond belief with government, media, and their voice being ignored. I believe both parties have failed the American people through greed and hunger for power. I have written more times than I can count that the Democratic Party has been hijacked by a far-left socialistic extremist minority, made possible by the media’s support. I understand through my upbringing that democrats are very proud, and although many feel exactly like I do, would never vote for Donald Trump. This is due to his personal flaws, how he has been portrayed, and the mainstream media’s overall hatred. I see the Nation I love, America, coming apart at the seams. I want better

for my children and grandchildren. Last week’s column was intended to be a cry for peace, unity, and getting things done the right way. Unfortunately, I missed the mark by one paragraph. The paragraph that Jim infuriated many referred to Webb, Jr. President Trump and was written long before many current facts had come to light due to deadline issues. No matter who or what I am writing about, I usually do a much better job of gathering information and allowing the situation to play out before I put pen on paper. Like most, I was frustrated over the actions of a few that crossed the line on Capitol Hill. It was my gut feeling this would empower the Nancy Pelosis, Chuck Schumers, and so on. I anticipated it would be the dagger targeting President Trump that many elected officials had been looking for. Both Democrat and Republican. Never would have thought invoking the 25th Amendment or impeachment was possible at deadline time. I totally denounce and disagree with either and would never side with Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer. With all that needs done in our Country, I’m disgusted time is being wasted on an attempt to put the last nail in President Trump’s coffin. And that clearly is the Democratic Party’s motivation. Not

to mention if those in Congress can get this done this fast, why does everything else take forever! The other thing that has become more probable is what I wrote about mob mentality, and President Trump’s influence is inaccurate. As I have learned the timeline and what actually occurred, I believe certain individuals showed up with bad intentions. This, coupled with the newly released information that the FBI had knowledge of what was going to occur, failed to be proactive. Now regarding the trolls, moles, and haters that live on social media. How about the golden rule? If you don’t have something nice to say to somebody, don’t put it out there. If something is really that important, contact the individual directly, not by cowardly keyboard tactics for the public to view. To those that use social media to pile on, grind an ax, or take a shot of opportunity, God help you. Here’s an idea, use the negative effort to do something positive in the world. So, that being said. I’m not a traitor or turncoat. I will never be in bed with Nancy Pelosi. I have and never will sell out to the mainstream media/CNN. Nor am I a domestic terrorist. No, aliens have not abducted and brainwashed me into socialism. I would never play both sides of the aisle against each other. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me anytime. God Bless America.

Winter Fun for Everyone

I

t’s that time of year, y’all — the dark and dreary days of winter. And as if January isn’t generally depressing enough on its own, we are still struggling with the COVID pandemic. It’s a formidable combination. Oddly enough, this is generally the time of year that I write an article telling you that winter sucks, but here’s a bunch of stuff that’s happening around town to beat the winter blues. Obviously, we won’t be doing that this year, so we have to take a different approach. One of the best ways to lessen the effects of COVID if you happen to contract it is to be as healthy as possible. Eat a balanced diet, take your vitamins (particularly C, D3, and Zinc), and get plenty of exercise to keep your body — but especially your lungs — healthy. Taking steps to boost your immune system can also go a long way in the prevention of getting COVID. The irony of me telling you to keep up with your cardio is fairly astounding, and certainly not lost on me, but it’s true. The healthier and stronger your lungs are, the better off you are in the fight against COVID. I could tell you to go for a run or hit the stationary bike or elliptical, but let’s get real. Those things are awful. So instead, I’m going to recommend that you go outside and have some fun! Our area is filled with exciting things to do outside during the winter! Hiking, ice-fishing, skiing, and more. So, let’s get into it, shall we? We recently got slammed with more snow

than I have seen in years, and it made me remember all the time I spent sledding as a kid. I remember my Uncle Greg taking my cousins and me to the ‘Sugar Bowl’ near Steph Wildwood Cemetery. If Nordstrom you want a good workout and some fun outside time, I highly recommend going sledding. Get out, climb some hills, and remember how much fun you had as a kid! The Sugar Bowl is still in use as far as I know, and I saw quite a few kids using the hill behind Gardenview Church in Old Lycoming, but really, anywhere you can find a reasonable hill will work! Racing down a hill on a sled or snow tube is a winter activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Many state parks block off an area during the winter for sledding, and some have warming huts or fire pits. Please abide by the guidelines set by the individual parks for the safety and enjoyment of everyone involved. According to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), there is also plenty of ice skating to be found in our state parks. After the temperature hits rock bottom and Jack Frost is really nipping at your nose, get dressed in warm layers and head out to ice skate.

The DCNR says, “Natural ice is not usually as smooth as ice in a rink, but the view in a park can be spectacular. “Always be careful when venturing onto the ice! “If you plan to go where the ice is not monitored for safety, make sure ice is at least 4” thick for a single skater and 7” thick for a small group. Always carry safety equipment.” They also offer the following ice safety tips: • Test ice thickness with an auger before skating. Four inches of solid ice is the minimum recommended thickness for a single skater. Seven inches of solid ice is the minimum recommended thickness for small groups of skaters. • Spread out. Crowds can put too much weight onto one area. • Be aware of changes in ice thickness across a body of water. Perimeter ice is weaker due to shifting, expansion, and sunlight reflecting off of the bottom. • Avoid areas with protruding logs, brush, plants, and docks. These structures absorb heat, weakening the surrounding ice. • Avoid areas with multiple or intersecting cracks and standing water over ice. • Use extra caution on rivers and streams where ice can appear thicker than it really is. Moving water erodes ice from below the surface. • Venturing out on ice alone is not advisable. Take a friend along for fun and for safety. • Wear a PFD (life jacket). • Always carry safety equipment and knowhow to use it. • Check the weather and plan accordingly. Several days with temperatures above

WINTER FUN freezing will weaken the ice. If skiing and snowboarding are more your style, there are many opportunities to have some downhill fun in our area. Ski Sawmill is the closest, but there are a bunch of ski resorts and slopes across the northeastern region of the state. If the excitement of downhill skiing is a bit too much for your liking, consider trying cross-country skiing. Cross-country skiing is a great way to experience the outdoors in winter. Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests offer some of the best places to ski. Remarkably tranquil and scenic during the winter months, these year-round facilities provide seemingly endless miles of snowcovered trails. Many trail networks are specifically designated and maintained for crosscountry skiing. Cross-country skiing is a great way to enjoy a state park in winter, especially when there is lots of snow on the ground. According to the DCNR, cross-country skiing trails are located on: hiking trails, equestrian trails, service roads, fields, frozen lakes, old railroad grades, and lake shorelines They also note that “some trails have track set. Visitors are asked not to hike or snowshoe over the set track.” Parks in the northern tier typically receive plenty of snowfall each year for winter activities, particularly in the northern-most counties and the northeast and northwest corners of the state.

Along the cross-country skiing lines, I imagine that the same rules, regulations, and trails would apply for snowshoeing. But I have also seen people snowshoeing in Brandon Park, so that seems to be an activity that you can enjoy just about anywhere there is snow without traveling too far! One thing I’ve always wanted to try but haven’t had the opportunity is snowmobiling. I don’t love being out in the cold, but I always thought it looked like fun! Since I don’t know much about how or where you snowmobile, I’m defaulting to the DCNR once again. They say that State parks and forests offer thousands of miles and hundreds of acres of designated snowmobile areas for exploration. Opportunities range from scenic trails through the woods, to straightaway runs on roadways, to large, open spaces. As long as there is enough snow cover, snowmobile trails open the day after the last day of Pennsylvania’s regular or extended rifle deer season and close April 1 or earlier as determined by the district forester or park manager. Riders must stay on roads and trails marked open for snowmobiles. Some trails used for snowmobiling may be open to vehicular traffic. Roads for joint use by snowmobiles and vehicular traffic are marked with caution signs at all road junctions. Snowmobiling in State Forests Snowmobile riding opportunities abound on state forest lands. If you’re looking for a

There is also plenty of hiking to found in the area too, but please make sure you use caution. Rickett’s Glen has the following regulations in place, “To hike the trail at this time, you must be an experienced hiker with the proper equipment. Equipment should include ice crampons, ice axes, and rope. All hikers should register at the park office.” I would assume other state parks would have the same rules, so make sure you check Facebook pages and the DCNR website before heading out for a winter hike! Finally, I am going to quickly and vaguely mention ice-fishing. There are far more qualified people writing for Webb Weekly to give you the information you need. One day I’m going to work it out with Ken Hunter to head out and learn to ice-fish! Ken has some hard-water fishing tips in his article this week! Whatever winter activity you decide to try this year, please remember to be safe! Again, be sure to check the DCNR website www.dcnr.pa.gov for the most recent winter conditions, along with safety guidelines. Appropriate gear and clothing are a must whether you are going for a sled ride down the street, taking a trip to Ski Sawmill, or going for a hike amongst the icy falls. Make sure you have a mask so that if you run into others out and about, you can make sure you all stay safe from COVID too. So far, 2021 is shaping up to be just as weird as 2020, but that doesn’t mean, with the appropriate safety precautions, you can’t get outside and have a little winter fun! There are lots of ideas for cold-weather entertainment in the ads and articles throughout the paper, so be safe and enjoy!

f any graduates of the Williamsport High School Class of 1914, are beginning to feel their age a bit, they will have a bond of sympathy with a contemporary—the 43-year-old main building of the W.H.S. Although considered one of the sturdiest structures in the Williamsport school system, the sprawling yellow brick building is not as “young as it used to be.” To remedy the situation, the school district decided a little rejuvenation might be in order. The result” the first major improvement project since the Vine Avenue wing was built in 1935. Most notable change resulting from the program is the enclosing of the auditorium. Walls of concrete block painted light green have been erected around the area to improve the acoustics and to protect surrounding classrooms from disturbing noise of assemblies and practice sessions on stage. “It’s much better now, says school principal, Dr. L.F. Derr. A major project last fall was the removal

of the old roof and the construction of a new one. The painters and electricians have been busy too. Several rooms have been painted and equipped with fluorescent lighting. In particular, the new lights have greatly improved the physics and chemistry laboratories and lecture rooms. For the teachers one of the blessings of the improvement program is the men’s faculty lounge, which the instructors themselves built in the school’s basement. Furnishings have been provided by the Parent-Teachers Association. As for students, there’s the suspicion that the favorite “improvement” is the jukebox that was installed during the Christmas vacation. Budget watchers need not worry. The machine does not come under the school’s improvement program. It is a project of the W.H.S. Student Council. Teachers and students are grateful for another improvement—the installation of eight new electric cooled water fountains.

County Hall Corner The Dream Speech Almost Didn’t Happen By Larry Stout

M

artin Luther King Jr.’s speech on August 28, 1963 before some 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. has become one of the most famous speeches in American history. It is known as “I Have a Dream” Speech, but there is tremendous irony here, as the

Americans. This focus was evident by the presence of United Auto Workers President Walter Reuther in attendance and the support of other smaller unions who help in the organizing.

whole section concerning the “dream” was not a part of the original speech, and in fact, he was originally not scheduled to speak at all. The purpose of the assembly that day was the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Civil right leaders Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin had planned this event for two years, and wanted the primary emphasis to be on securing jobs and equality in wages for African-

As the day of the rally began approaching, more civil right advocates wanted to get in on the act. In June of 1963, a coalition of leaders which became known as the “Big Six” expressed support for the march. One of these was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Dr. King was a well-known figure, to be sure, but the organizers were conflicted on whether he would steer away from the primary focus of the march if allowed to speak. There was a lot of give and take, and it was finally decided that Dr. King could provide some closing comments at the end of the day. This would be at the end of three hours of speeches on a hot

brilliantly linked the event of that day back to the very founding of our nation. His prepared speech was classic as he described the travesty of the past, the challenge for the present, and then summed up with a stirring statement in conclusion, “we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.” The ten minute talk lasted twelve minutes due to constant applause interruptions. With continual applause, his speech notes were finished. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a memorable message that was the perfect closing for the rally. Singer Mahalia Jackson had traveled with King for the past few years, and was sitting behind

the podium with others. She heard the cheering crowds and leaned forward and yelled, “Tell them about the Dream, Martin, the Dream!” Dr. King had shared his ‘dream’ from time to time in his stump speeches in the past few years, and it had always been well received. He knew his allotted time was up, but no one was moving on — even after standing in scorching heat for hours, they seemed to want to hear more. So Dr. King continued without any notes in front of him, first acknowledging the suffering of many in that multitude, and yet astonishingly remarked that their suffering was redemptive. This set the stage for the ‘dream’ that all of us have heard, “I have a dream that my four little

children will live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character. I have a dream today.” Those last five minutes of impromptu speech has been historic, but the entire speech is worth studying and should never be forgotten. Removing completely the prejudice of skin color is still a work in progress in our country. But sadly, we are seeing an emergence of political correctness armed with censorship that results in a prejudice that is totally contrary to the type of freedom that Dr. King advocated. We should all look forward to that day when we can cry, “Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, I am free at last.”

August day in Washington, DC. It was decided that the most the crowd would be able to take at that point would be ten minutes, so this was his allotted time. The speech he prepared is one of the finest crafted speeches in American history. Standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, he opened his address by saying, “Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation.” Instead of “one hundred years ago,” but using “five score years,” King is obviously alluding to the Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln. In that speech, Lincoln was referencing back to the Declaration of Independence. So, in one sentence, King

“Celebrate The Sounds of Life” “The new hearing aids I just got work great. I have had three sets of hearing aids in the past, and I could never hear with them. I have been to three different places looking for a good pair of hearing aids, and I will never go anywhere else. I can hear people talking in converstations with groups. I could never hear in groups with my old hearing aids. The price was great and well worth the hearing. The extra microphone on the hearing aid really does make a difference. All the words go together, and I can understand speech now. If you need a hearing aid - I would tell you, you better go to Artisan Hearing Technologies.”

Jersey Shore FBLA Operated Store at Nippenose Valley Village Helped To Enhance the Quality of Life For Residents There By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he very active Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter of Jersey Shore High School has learned a lot about the workings of business through their operation of a store at the Nippenose Valley Village. Still, perhaps, more importantly, they have enhanced the quality of life for the residents, by having that store there at a time when it was difficult — if not risky — due to COVID-19, for residents to venture away to shop for small everyday items that they might need. According to Julie Steinbacher, whose daughter is a member of the chapter and who assists in advising the group, the pandemic brought many challenges that required the help of business leaders, the staff at Nippenose Valley Village, family members of residents, and the Jersey Shore Senior High FBLA members working together. The FBLA-operated store had certain goals it wished to accomplish. • To give a safe social outlet for residents who are mostly quarantined in their

rooms. • To grow sales by 25 percent. • To donate the profits to the residents and the staff who have helped make this store possible. • To expand the inventory selection for the residents • To expose FBLA members to pivoting to uncertain conditions throughout the supply chain. FBLA members worked with staff and owners of Nippenose Valley Village to open a store within the facility to provide a place for residents to shop, and to learn about starting and running a retail business. The store was stocked by asking residents what they would want to purchase. Ice cream was the biggest request and ended up being the best-selling item. Through the use of volunteers, who were primarily FBLA students, the store was a success. Students were responsible for learning about and implementing procedures, stocking the store, reconciling sales, and filing the sales tax return. The Village staff and other business owners were able to help teach the students the things they

encourage them to buy if they had not utilized the store. During the pandemic, the store became even more important to the residents because families were not able to visit, and getting essentials such as shampoo, cards, stamps, etc., to their loved ones was a special trip rather than part of the visit. Some families were not able to, so the residents relied on the store more and requested more items to be purchased for them. For one resident, Dick Young, getting his specially requested peppermints that he loved really made a difference in his day. The store was also a social outing for the residents. There were times of the year when the residents were eating all their meals in their rooms and had no contact with anyone. This was detrimental to the resident’s mental health as socializing was a main part of their life at the Village. Seniors move together into a facility partly because they need help but also because they can talk to other residents at any time of the day. They do not have to sit at home and rely on a family member to stop by or take them somewhere; they can just walk down the hall. With mealtime being taken away, residents could still come out of their rooms to go to the store and talk to the volunteer working. This gave them a chance to get their exercise in for the day and help their mental health a little by

needed to know to accomplish their tasks. All was running smoothly, and then COVID-19 hit. The volunteers who worked there every Sunday from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. and every Tuesday from 4:00 p.m.-5:30 p.m. were no longer allowed in the store. Starting in March of 2020, the Pennsylvania Department of Health requirements mandated no visitors or volunteers were allowed into the facility. Virla Ocker, a staff person who was instrumental in mentoring the kids, came forward and volunteered to run the sales inside the store if the FBLA students could still reconcile the sales, make the deposits, shop for items, and manage the inventory. As time went on, policies that Nippenose Valley Village had to comply with changed. At the end of the summer, Nippenose Valley Village was able to open back up and have volunteers in the Village. The Co-chairpersons were able to get COVID tested and enter the building. A day of cleaning, inventorying, and making the store comply with the signage regulations was needed to re-set the store. Many of the residents had missed the FBLA members and stopped by just to chat on that day. It was decided that new inventory was needed, so a Labor Day Sale was created to sell off stock that had not sold within the first year and to give a boost to the income. This was also to allow newer residents to see the store and

having social interaction. Requirements changed often, and the FBLA students needed to be flexible. It also gave the FBLA members a chance to understand the impact that the pandemic had on the residents. The pandemic had a great impact on high school students, with schools, activities, and athletics all being curtailed. But the impact on the residents was more dramatic — being isolated from family and friends in such a severe way. For the residents of the Village with cars, they were not able to leave and drive anywhere at times. Other times, if they went anywhere, even a doctor’s appointment,

they had to quarantine to their rooms for two weeks. Being able to shop at a store, request special items, and interact with others was truly needed and appreciated within Nippenose Valley Village. The FBLA students were able to understand these needs and help to provide this social outlet. The students also learned important business lessons, such as changing business procedures in response to governmental regulations, changes in needs of customers, updating policies, filing sales tax returns, and understanding the need for consistent commitment to a project.

HOME COOKIN 2009. I had tried so many diets between 2009 and 2018. I did the Kellogg’s diet, Atkins diet, Slim Fast, Weight Watchers, and the South Beach diet. Yes, I lost weight! The most I had lost was 28lbs. I was so proud, but then quickly went back to my old habits. Gaining everything back, and then some. Having babies actually helped me, because during my pregnancies I lost weight — I was so sick with my son for the first six months. The doctor probably figured I could stand to lose a little weight, so why give her something to stop her from throwing up five times a day? It was so bad that I had to keep bags in our vehicles for when I got sick. Oh, it was just awful! I had very healthy pregnancies though, and see that’s the thing, I never, ever had a doctor to tell me to lose weight!? I was a healthy chunky lady! Not a thing wrong with me. Plus, I could get on an elliptical next to some smaller girl and whoop her booty on time. So, I didn’t let my weight get to me. I have always had ambition and never felt lazy, because I wasn’t. I just really, REALLY loved to eat. Plus, I had this smoking hot husband who loved me no matter what. Never ever telling me, “Honey, you are gaining weight,” or “You need to lose some weight.” I had nothing to prove and felt comfortable with who I was. Until the numbers climbed higher and I was ‘close enough’ to a number I never EVER wanted to see. At this point I had gained 78lbs! I told myself I was going to do it, and this time I was going to keep the weight off ! I

had to do it for me. That Friday night, I decided to start the following Monday. We were out to eat with our crew at Ozzie and Mae’s and I’ll never forget it. (Tania Myers said she will never forget this night either.) I told her and my other girlfriends walking out to our cars, “Girls, this is it. I am going to lose weight and keep it off this time!” When I said it, I clapped my hands, Tania remembers the clap. I was determined, and ready to start. That Monday I got started on my weight loss journey. Delicious Homemade Chicken BL Salad You can add the “T” if you wish, but this salad will have you coming back for more! Eating healthy doesn’t have to be hard. Ingredients: • Fresh Spring Mix • Grilled Seasoned Chicken • Hard Boiled Egg • 1 slice of bacon • Cucumber • Red Pepper • Add any veggies you like! Directions: Place the spring mix in a bowl and top it all with these goodies. Then, I sprinkle on just a smidge of mozzarella, parm, or sharp cheese and use a low-fat dressing. Making two or three of these at a time is great lunch prep. If you have it in your fridge, ready to go, you will be more likely to choose healthier options.

Continued F rom P age 2 7 a denim skirt, a black trouser, a maxi sweater dress, a wrap-style sweater, a pair of chunky sneakers, and even a snakeprint bootie are solid examples of what to include in a capsule winter wardrobe. Or maybe you prefer neutrals as opposed to prints? Then, by all means, pile on the camel-hued knits and call it a day. If your job requires a uniform or dress code, you can include that in your capsule, or just focus your collection on the garments you wear “off duty.” Accessories like tights, socks, scarves, knitted and felt hats, jewelry, and belts, are

also part of a capsule collection. As with your clothes, edit your accessories to what you actually wear and consider donating the rest. Of course, if you have pieces with sentimental value like an heirloom piece of jewelry, or a handknitted scarf from your best friend that you don’t normally wear, obviously keep those memories. Personally, I try NOT to limit my accessories even for a capsule collection as having more options to add-on increases the versatility of basic garments and outfit combinations. But if you want to dive in on editing your wardrobe, then start rummaging through the accessory drawer.

wholly practical and stylish. In general, all pieces can be worn together, with two-tothree standout items for those unexpected occasions life throws at you. And while I’ve been suggesting donating what you’re not wearing, considering this is a seasonal practice, for quality garments that just aren’t appropriate this time of year, but could be part of a spring/summer capsule, find a place to store them, so they aren’t taking up space or become a distraction. And if you have investment pieces like a wool suit, fancy dress, or “good” shoes that you know won’t see any action this season, but when things return to a normal pace, will be more a part of your sartorial rotation, again properly store them in the hopes of better days for the future.

Usually, pieces like activewear and loungewear get a pass from being included in a capsule wardrobe, but this winter is slightly different from in years past. You may find your capsule wardrobe heavy in soft pants and hoodies, which is perfectly fine. If that’s what you’re wearing, then that’s what you are wearing. You may want to go through those sweats and yoga pants and get rid of garments that are worn beyond wear and donation. Since the winter will be long (as winters always are), you might want to treat yourself to some fresh indoor pants and thermal Henleystyle shirts. Overall, a fully-realized capsule wardrobe means that you are never left with any single item that doesn’t feel

It got a little ugly, so I wasn’t even able to hunt my own little piece of ground in peace. Again, my heart wasn’t in it. We later sold that ground and I tried hunting State Game Lands. That was just plain nuts. There was a tree stand every fifty yards, and in rifle season, it looked like a pumpkin patch of orange coats. My heart was definitely not into that craziness. did my best to not be discovered. That usually meant parking a distance from the ground and then walking in before daylight and staying ‘till after dark. That made for very long and cold days, but passion will drive you to do things like that. When I started pastoring, church people began offering me private ground to hunt on. That was great, but other hunters also had permission – and many of them had been hunting those areas for years and already had their permanent stands in the best spots. My heart wasn’t in it. My passion then drove me to buy land. Heather and I bought thirteen acres, and for the first time in my life, I had my own

ground. I found two-hundred acres in Crawford County in northwestern PA and a small group of friends to hunt with me and help pay for it. It was prime deer habitat with agriculture and thick creek bottoms meandering through the property. There was a lot of big buck sign and everything seemed perfect, until we discovered that the good ol’ boys who lived locally hunted the ground when we weren’t around. The big bucks disappeared. Living four hours away, there wasn’t a blasted thing we could do about it. My heart moved on again. As kind of a last resort, a friend showed

me a place to hunt where the bucks were big and hardly any hunters were crazy enough to access it. Getting to the ground required a two-hour hike up a mountain and deep into state forest land. I’ll never forget our first hunt. We packed our tree stands in on a Sunday and then made the long hike back to camp – four hours round trip. My boots didn’t cooperate, and I developed a sore spot on my leg. The next morning, we got up at 3 AM and hiked the two hours back in. It was painful, but the hunting was great! Just after daylight, I got winded by a huge ten point that walked in from behind me.

Thirty minutes later, I arrowed a nice seven point with long tines. There was no way to drag that big buck out of the woods, so I hung it up, skinned it, and hiked back to camp to get a knife and meat bags. I returned the next morning to get the meat. With a pack weighing about sixty pounds, I again made the hike back to camp. My leg was killing me. If you’re keeping track, that’s twelve hours of hiking with a sore leg. Nuts, right? You bet. It’s amazing what you can overcome when your heart is in it. I’ve been hunting that ground for the past ten years. I did find a way in that is shorter, but man is it steep. I’ve even taken up backpacking and spending a few days

alone in the wilderness. Sleeping in a tent on a mountaintop in November can be miserable cold, but the two beautiful ten points hanging on my wall tell me the suffering is worth it. It’s an awesome and grueling adventure. I do it because my heart is in it. Passion and suffering are connected. Some people are passionate about marathons and they suffer months of preparation to finish a race. Others are passionate about music and they suffer through years of practice to master an instrument. What about you? What are you passionate about? Whatever it is, you are willing to endure a lot of suffering to

high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, and obesity. According to new research, scientists have also found that sleep, resilience, and a positive attitude are interconnected. Quality sleep has been linked to being more positive and able to better handle stressful situations. It also changes how we react to future stress. When we lack consistent, quality sleep, we can feel down or depressed and less positive about good things. In a paper published in Health Psychology, researcher, Dr. Nancy Sin, and her team showed that inadequate sleep interrupted our ability to process information and created stronger responses to stressful situations.

In their study, the researchers interviewed almost 2,00 adults in the United States. For a period of eight days, the people in the study received phone calls asking how much they slept the previous night, whether they experienced any positive or negative events during the day, and their overall feelings of being positive or negative. The study showed that there was a link between sleep the night before and how subjects responded to events the following day. It showed that a good night’s sleep had a positive affect on mood. It also showed that getting inadequate sleep was a strong predictor in a decreased positive response to daily stressors, as well as dampened response to positive events.

play a large role in our relationships. When we are sleep deprived we feel irritable, may avoid meaningful conversations, and sleep deprivation may prevent us from feeling close to others. All of which harm our relationships. There is good news, however. By making a few simple adjustments, most people can improve the duration and quality of their sleep. Things such as exercising on a regular basis, getting on a regular sleep schedule, avoiding electronics before bedtime, and creating a relaxing sleep environment can all make a significant difference. These simple changes will positively affect our regular sleep patterns and our ability to experience joy, deal with stress, and -create positive relationships. The bottom line is that a good night’s sleep helps us to live happier, more productive lives.

People with chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure showed an even stronger connection to quality sleep and positive mood. Researchers concluded that how we react to daily stressors and positive events vary based upon how long we sleep and that losing sleep is strongly connected to negativity when faced with stressful situations and a decrease in positive feelings when good things happened. Sleep has a significant impact upon our lives in many ways. Research has shown that sleep deprivation plays a role in developing chronic disease. It also affects our emotions, both positive and negative. Getting adequate, quality sleep on a regular basis may reduce inflammation, help us deal with daily stressors, and may enhance our overall happiness. In addition, sleep can also

want to thank everyone who reached out to me last week to let me know they look forward to reading my article each week. It was very humbling. To garden, you need tools. Take a peek in the shed or garage; you may already have what you need. Like I said last week, this is not an expensive hobby. The tools you need will be gloves, a small hand rake, trowel, pruners, garden fork, and plant labels. If you find yourself at your local garden

forget is to use a permanent marker so that they can be easily read through the growing season. Planter boxes can be made of many different materials. Wood, metal, concrete, plastic, or ceramic. All of these have pros and cons. Wood is my number one choice. I know products have changed over the years with pressure-treated lumber, but this type of wood can sometimes contain harmful chemicals. I like to use natural products. The lumber that I recommend would be cedar, pine, or hemlock. Metal boxes hold up well, but over

center deciding which tools would be best, keep it simple. Gloves need to fit snug, so you don’t find yourself taking them on and off. The small hand rake, trowel, and garden fork can have wood or plastic handles. My recommendation is a wood handle, but just make sure they have metal tines and blades. The reason for this is when the ground gets dried out from the hot sun, you may need to use more force on the tools to break up the soil. Pruners are like scissors but

You can write the name on the front and on the back and the Charlie Gizenski date it was planted. At the end of the growing season, feel free to toss them into your compost pile. They are wood and will break down and become part of your soil the next year. The one thing not to

making the railroad ties can leak out into the soil and be absorbed by your plants. This can cause growth problems in sensitive plants. On my Instagram page, you will see that I chose 2” thick hemlock roughcut boards. This lumber will be heavy enough to withstand the weight of the soil and last for years. I chose not to stain the wood; I personally like the weathered look they gain over time. If you choose to stain the wood to match your house or shed, be sure to use a product that is safe around plants. Non water-based stains should be OK, but to be safe, ask your local paint store.

The one thing you must remember is that when they are filled with soil, they become very heavy and may not be able to be moved. Plastic may be the top choice for the gardener who just wants a few plants on their porch or deck. These are great options, but over time they may fade in color or crack. Ceramic pots can be expensive, but they will give color to your garden or porch. One product that I never recommend are railroad ties. The creosote used in

The Roving Sportsman… Winter Feeding of Wildlife By Jon Pries

I

n December, when Mother Nature decided to dump several feet of snow, then, shortly thereafter, several inches of rain throughout the region, she did no great favor for any of our wildlife. The rain compressed the snow below, then, with overnight freezing temperatures, managed to seal off things below with a layer of ice. In many areas, that icy layer persists and prevents all forms of birds and animals from accessing any possible food underneath it. With that in mind, let’s look at what we can do to help some of our furry or feathered friends make it through the toughest of the weeks ahead. For the various birds that do not head south for the winter months, there is a pretty easy solution to help them make it through the wintery days ahead. Bird feeders of various designs can supply needed nutrition to these winter residents. The real question, if you are just getting started in winter bird feeding, is what to feed. Black-oil sunflower seed is one of the best selections to include in any seed mix since almost any bird that will visit a bird feeder will eat these seeds. The outer shell is much thinner than other sunflower seeds and the seed itself tends to be larger, thus the birds get more food value per seed with the black-oil sunflower seeds.

Those birds that cannot crack the hull will land below the feeder and scour the area for bits and pieces of the seed that are dropped by other birds. Offering a mix of seeds is always a good idea since it will appeal to a wider variety of birds. But, be careful as some inexpensive seed mixes do contain “filler” seeds – junk seeds that most birds won’t eat. It might be better to concoct your own mix of seeds. Safflower seeds - white, thin-shelled conical seeds - are eaten by many different birds and are known to be a favorite of the northern cardinal. Cracked corn is always a good addition to your seed mix since it is appealing to most birds that will visit a feeder. Don’t forget to include the blackoil sunflower seeds. If you are not sure just what to include, contact a local feed store that has a variety of products for winter feeding. If pesky squirrels become a problem, you might solve the situation by offering them their own supply of corn. Merely drive spikes through a board and attach the board to the side of a nearby tree - then stick ears of corn on the spikes. Hopefully, this will lure the squirrels away from the bird feeder. Turkeys, deer and bears spend a great deal of time feeding during the later months of fall, frequently on acorns when they are plentiful, in order to build up a much needed layer of fat to aid in making

stronger bones and will provide better milk production for the does in the spring. This long term offering of the minerals is of great benefit throughout the year, but don’t forget – all minerals and residue must be taken up 30 days prior to any appropriate hunting season. The annual statewide flintlock deer season has just ended and the final archery deer season is set to end on Saturday, the 23rd, after which it is legal to put out feed for deer and other game. This winter offering of feed can be a fun activity and provide some great viewing opportunities. It will also be of great benefit to birds and animals as long as snow and ice continue to limit their usual food sources.

it through the cold of winter, when food may be scarce. In the dead of winter, you might see deer or turkeys in picked-over corn fields pawing or scratching through the snow in search of any remaining kernels of corn. Shelled corn is a popular choice of feed to put out for deer or turkeys. Caution: CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease) is a disease that is only beginning to show itself in Pennsylvania. It is spread from one deer to the next when they are in close proximity to one another. Thus, if you are putting corn out, it would be better to scatter it over a large area rather than just place it in a single pile or two. Providing a mixture of minerals now will begin to benefit the deer as they gain

some good fish with them. Each fisherman can have up to five devices, including tipups, and they should be under reasonable control. These days I use both tip-ups and the other very effective equipment — ice fishing rods and reels, so next week we’ll take a closer look at that equipment. I should also take a moment to mention another ice fishing device that goes by the name Jaw Jacker. I have not seen one, but it’s my understanding that they are available for purchase. The Jaw Jacker automatically sets the hook when the rod snaps up when a fish takes the bait. It’s my understanding that the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has declared them illegal for use in our state. I thought it might be a good idea to pass this information along.

they freeze over less quickly. I like to start with the bait on my tip-ups about a foot off the bottom. To set for the proper depth, simply attach one of those clip-on weights to the hook on your tip-up and sound out the bottom. Once I sound the bottom, I wrap the line back on the reel until it begins to tighten then I go five more turns on the reel. I also have a button (almost any old button will do) on the line that I slide to the top-of-the-line spool — now I know exactly where to set the rig after every strike. Also, after a strike, I can look down the hole to see how far a fish may have run by the location of the button. Tip-ups are still very popular, and over the past couple of weeks, I and a number of my ice fishing buddies have already taken

and drives to the hoop and led all scorers with 32 points. His brother David Hill chipped in with 19 points and newcomer guard Hanief Clay added 13. South’s Mounties shook off the offensive woes of last season when they averaged only 46 points per game, which included seven games when they failed to score 40 points. Leading the way were two new members of the starting lineup, guard Secoy Roberts (25 points) and forward Grant Bachman (12). Three-year starting forward Evan Laudenslager contributed 16 points and played a strong game on the boards. Who knows if things will improve to the point where family and friends will be permitted to once again frequent local gyms this winter, but from what I have witnessed in the early going the young men and women playing the game are giving it their all in sadly what have been practice-like atmospheres. They know that truly, each time they step on the court it could be their last game of the season. Yet, they are thankful for that opportunity and welcome any support you can provide during this most unusual and pandemic season. At game’s end, fist-bumps and hand waves have replaced handshakes and back-slaps, but they know they have given their best effort and played the game by the established rules. Too bad the same can’t be said by those teams sporting donkey and elephant mascots.

‘games’ on the schedule left to play and we all need to go about playing the game in accordance with the established rules. Regarding the game itself, last week’s column referenced the new basketball format established for the 20202021 season by the expanded Mid Penn Conference, which has added new members, Northwest and South Williamsport, and divided itself into two five team divisions, east and west. Conference play commenced last week and if the St. John Neumann/South Williamsport game gives any indication, it could be a crowd-pleasing season. (oops, forgot — there aren’t crowds there to see them play). That January 11 game at South Williamsport was the Mountaineers first game in the new Mid Penn Conference. Neumann’s Knights have assembled a talent-laden squad and are a clear favorite to win the league title. Their fast-paced style not only serves them well on the basketball court but would be a lightning-fast track team if St. John Neumann offered that sport to its students. On that evening, the assembled ‘crowd’ (17 by my count) was treated to a competitively high-scoring entertaining game won by the Knights 80-70. The outcome was in doubt until the Knights all-state sophomore Davion Hill took the game into his own hands in the fourth quarter with three-point shots

Sporting Matters With Spence…

Jacoby in Winter

N

orth Central Pennsylvania is home to many treasures. Yes, we live in an area with such amazing beauty. My son and I take full advantage as we do our best to “commune with nature” as often as we can. I simply love to fish, but Jensen is more of an explorer these days. Hiking is a new passion, and one of his favorite treks is a little-known secret just outside of town. Jacoby Falls is a short and peaceful hike in the Loyalsock State Forest, only 20 minutes northeast of Williamsport.

The trailhead is along Wallis Run Road, about four miles north of State Route 973. This hike is for the entire family and can be completed in 3 hours. The 1.6-mile journey covers a moderate landscape engulfed by endless oaks, maples, and conifers. The trail is very well marked with yellow rectangular blazes and follows the tranquil waters of Jacoby Hollow Run. The final reward is a 29-foot drop off a stream crashing onto its rocks below. Do not expect to see anything like Niagara Falls, but Jacoby is well worth an afternoon venture.

Jacoby Falls trail can be enjoyed any time of the year. The waterfall is exceptionally brilliant in the early spring when the waters are abundant and spectacular wildflowers and mosses are Jamie beginning to take Spencer shape. Some prefer the cool mountain shade on those dreadfully hot days of summer. The setting is also alive and full of color during our autumn months. Jensen’s favorite time of year to hike Jacoby is in the winter. The frozen cascade of blue ice is an impressive sight. I agree. The ice and snow formations are DOPE. Jacoby is an easy trek, but you should proceed with caution. Always wear the proper footwear when hiking, kids. There are a few slippery slopes, and the climb to the falls is somewhat challenging. Depending on the season- you may encounter a couple of streams and lots and lots of mud. Encourage your kids to pack their own gear to keep it fun. Jensen always brings his trusty toy ax because you never know when a pack of wild Orcs might show up to dance. Jensen and I escaped quarantine. We decided to take advantage of a chilly Sunday a few weeks back. We had lots of options. He already has an extensive list of area trails he has proudly conquered,

but Jacoby Falls remains his favorite. We extended an invite to Mom, but she respectfully declined. It was too cold. We packed our bags with the essentials. You know, headlamps, machetes, Mountain Dews, and Nerf guns. The Spencer boys were the only crazies making the climb that afternoon. We both took our time and appreciated our views. We managed to use my new water purifier for a nice cool drink. I believe it destroyed all the enzymes, but the jury is still out. The falls were especially breathtaking that day. It was a few days after snowmaggedon. It made up for the many detours we encountered. Isn’t it amazing how much can change over the course of a year? Jensen is much taller, and we are both stuck in the middle of a pandemic. But Jacoby’s innocence remains. Please remember to introduce our next generation to the woods. Cheers.
