Always Question Science, Medicine, and Government
Call 570-326-9322
I
want to make this as blatantly clear as possible. The above three are driven by money, power, and beyond greed. They couldn’t care a laboratory rat’s tail about you. Anyone who tries to tell you any differently either directly benefits from the madness or has taken their five-pound bag of sugar to help the medicine go down. Science, by its very own nature, should always be questioned. Unfortunately, like everything else in our Nation, it has been sold out to the highest bidder and a board of directors. It was scientists within a laboratory that mutated a naturally occurring organism into COVID-19. A man-altered genetic germ designed for one purpose. It was scientists who raced to split the atom. If that helps, you look at it any differently. No matter how pure a scientific mind and heart may be, big pharmaceutical and government are corrupt. Not to mention many of the greatest inventions of science were laboratory mistakes — like nitrous oxide for anesthesia, Penicillin, iodine, the telephone, Vulcanized rubber, and nylon. Just to mention a few. The creation of asbestos was considered a scientific marvel with more applications than ever thought about. How did that work out? Please don’t misread what I am saying. I’m not talking about believing in something that
is proven provided by science; I am talking about unadulterated trust just because it is science. We should have all also learned by now that anything created by man has an endless timeline of judgment. Now, let’s discuss the combination of science and medicine in our Nation. Simply surmised, the United States spends the most of any country on both. Just in federal grant money for medical science, 130 billion dollars was provided in 2019. Globally, the largest pharmaceutical companies spent nearly 200 billion dollars in the same year on research and development. It goes without saying big pharma’s biggest customer is the United States. In the same calendar year, there were 345.7 billion dollars spent on prescription drugs in the US. Can you imagine the take the medical insurance companies get for just shuffling the paperwork on these drugs? So, if this effort was in the American citizens’ best interest, it should be safe to say “We the People” should have the best availability of and implementation of prescription drugs in the world. So how do you judge? My common sense would tell me a simple way would be life expectancy and comparison. Depending on whose numbers you go by, life expectancy in 2019 was 78.6 years. Comparing that to countries comparable to the United States, we weren’t
even in the top 10. Their average was over 82 years. Comparing it to all nations around the world, we weren’t even in the top 40. Americans, per capita, are prescribed more drugs than any other nation in the world. Again, there are many places Jim to get the numbers, but we’re Webb, Jr. talking up to four times more than comparable nations. You would think the cost per prescription would be less; it is almost double compared to comparable nations. Clearly, the largest pusher of drugs in the world is the United States health care industry. Did I mention in the first part of my article that opioids were a scientific and medical wonder at one time, completely endorsed and pushed by the federal government? Again, there is a difference between trusting, questioning, and applying common sense. Hopefully, you trust your doctor, but you should question drugs that are prescribed. For no other reason than it’s your health! Not to mention at some point, the scientists are going to realize that the reason we don’t have a longer life expectancy is due to the amount of drugs prescribed and the combination effect. This doesn’t even take into account the use of over-the-counter drugs. The last of the trilogy in my title has completely perverted what our Founding Fathers intended for our Nation. Being elected and serving “We the People” was to be exactly that. Service to one’s Country and
working for the people. Not a lifetime seat at the trough of the American taxpayer. Our federal government has grown itself into the largest business in the world. With just one catch, they don’t have to balance a budget or worry about a P&L. The only shareholders are the elected and the appointed. Along with their staffing entourages. This work has become generational in many cases. Anyone serving in Washington for more than two terms in any capacity is part of the problem. Some that have only been there a short time now fit this mold. This beast, which has been created in Washington, is controlled by the largest corporations in the world and the billionaires that own them. What is occurring has nothing to do with political affiliation; it has become a longterm peaceful takeover of our Nation. Anyone who thinks our federal government is working for the good of the people and deserves our trust is only saying that because they are benefiting from a corrupt system. The hardworking Americans and small business owners are the prey of the federal government and those controlling it. They want to lull you to sleep with stimulus money, PPP money, federal bailouts, and ridiculous promises in current times. This world order of capitalistic vampires wants much more than your money. They want the soul of our constitutional freedom. They want to feed on our Nation as long as possible. They don’t care about the consequence. The more division created amongst the People, the easier the hunt. God Bless America.

’all. I’m going to be honest. This last year has kinda sucked. While I know the reasons and believe that safety is of the utmost importance and will continue to follow protocols, it doesn’t change the fact that I’m pretty much over them. I’m over masks (but again will continue to wear mine, don’t come for me). I’m over capacity limits. I’m over social distancing (but again, will continue to practice it, so don’t come for me.) I’m ready for easily accessible vaccinations and moving towards a sense of normalcy once again. But, in the meantime, we all need to work together to keep each other safe and healthy, and Valentine’s Day is no exception. Social distancing guidelines affected various holidays throughout 2020, but such guidelines were issued after Valentine’s Day 2020. The upside is that Valentine’s Day may be the easiest holiday to celebrate while still adhering to social distancing restrictions. After all, Valentine’s Day is typically a day to spend time alone with the person you love. But if you still want some suggestions on how to have a Happy-but-Socially-Distanced Valentine’s Day, here are some suggestions!
CELEBRATE THE SOUNDS OF LIFE
Order a take-out dinner for two from a favorite local restaurant. It gives you the night off from cooking and helps support a small business. I’ve noticed several local Steph places doing prix fixe Nordstrom menus to-go for Valentine’s Day. If you want to have dinner out, there is still time to make a reservation at a local restaurant. Just please do yourself and the local eateries a favor and make a reservation. Capacity limits are tough enough right now. There will be no guaranteeing a table on Valentine’s Day during a pandemic. Watch a romantic movie on your preferred streaming service. Treat each other to a pair of cozy pajamas and spend the day under the covers catching up on cuddles. Purchase the ingredients to a recipe you both enjoy and prepare the meal together. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert — which is really just me segueing into a whole Valentine’s Day feast for you to make with your special someone! You didn’t think I’d suggest that without giving you a recipe, did

ringues onto the parchment, leaving 1 inch of space between the meringues. Place the meringues into the preheated oven, then turn the oven off. Let the meringues sit in the oven (keep the door closed) overnight, or until the oven is completely cool. Remove the meringues from the oven. To temper the chocolate, place 11/2 cups of chocolate in a temperer or in a double boiler and melt until completely smooth. Remove the melted chocolate from the heat and gradually stir in the remaining 1/2 cup chocolate. Keep stirring until the chocolate is fully melted and warm to the touch; it should be between 86 F and 88 F. To ensure that the chocolate is in temper, you can dip the tip of a knife into the bowl, and let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes. The chocolate should harden and become shiny. Dip half of each meringue into the chocolate, allowing the excess chocolate to drip, and return them to the parchment-lined baking sheet to set. Tip: If you don’t have access to piping bags and tips, you can drop the meringues by large teaspoonfuls onto the

Black and dark red roses also symbolize romantic malice. If you find yourself on the receiving end of these types of blooms, you may want to check in with your significant other to make sure everything is on the up and up. And watch where you step. Romance aside, you can gift an arrangement to a close friend, family member, or a loved one that’s far away from home to let them know you are thinking of them. Daisies, baby’s breath, bluebells, and ferns all stand for sincerity, affection, and constancy to various degrees. If you’re really not feeling flowers this V-Day, you may try gifting herbs or fauna. Presents of mint for virtue, sweet basil for good wishes, and coriander for worth not only convey affection but will also be useful in the kitchen. Potted bulbs of any variety speak to the season by conveying a sense of hope for the coming spring and will bring a subtle joy as the receiver watches it grow and bloom. There’s a flower or plant for everyone on your Valentine’s Day gift list this year. But, if you don’t have the budget to be sending bouquets and arrangements, consider finding greeting or note cards that feature the flowers and colors that best represent your particular message of love for your nearest and dearest.

lavender roses as an announcement of your affection. Welcoming back an old friend or estranged loved one? Give them yellow roses. If a friend is having a rough patch and you want to brighten their Day, then peach blooms are your ticket to express sympathy, sincerity, and gratitude. Coral is the color of desire, while orange roses represent enthusiasm and fascination. Of course, all of these meanings are open to interpretation, so a thoughtfully worded note should accompany any bouquet. Of course, there are a variety of flowers to express love and gratitude. If you’re looking to switch things up, then gift red chrysanthemums, which also mean “I love you.” Red tulips are another flower to make a declaration of passionate love, while violets send a quieter message of loyalty and devotion. Red carnations represent heartache if you want to send a sign to a lost love, while pink camellias tell someone that you are longing for them. Asters are also a symbol of love, and peonies mean a bashful type of love. If perhaps you’re feeling the darker side of romance and want to send a very different message to whomever, look to begonias for dark thoughts, hydrangeas for heartlessness, or marigolds for despair and jealousy.

County Hall Corner: Loving Hate By Larry Stout
A
common refrain among what passes for media these days is that America is more divided than ever. Those who did not sleep through their American history classes in school should know there has never been a time when our country was not divided in one way or another. Even during the Revolutionary War, estimates run upward of twenty percent, some 500,000 colonists, many quite influential, who were against armed

conflict with Great Britain. The debate on the Constitution is what created political parties. And, of course, opposite views on slavery are what brought about the Civil War. And so, it went all through our country’s history. There have been numerous issues that Americans have taken very strong opposing stands over the past couple of centuries, such as monetary policy, foreign policy, economic policies, immigration, voting rights, state boundaries; the list is endless. Yet, the United States stayed “united”
because there were certain values that were always agreed upon. These include the rule of law based on the Constitution, moral virtue from a biblical perspective, private ownership of property, the value of learning and education, etc. The highest value was freedom, freedom of opportunity, freedom of assembly, freedom of worship, and freedom of speech. The one who could make the strongest case based on American values would establish the moral high ground for their position. This is one reason why Americans could never quite decide about abortion for decades after the Roe vs. Wade decision in 1972. Abortion advocates argued from a position of pro-choice, freedom of liberty, whereas abortion opponents argued pro-
life, freedom of life. Since the Declaration of Independence itself opens with the words of preserving “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” neither side could claim higher values than the other.

Seventy-five million Americans voted for Donald Trump, yet their voice must not be heard. Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and other sites that at one time were a source of a wide variety of views and opinions are now highly censored to ensure that only the ‘truth’ is presented as it is defined by those who control these sources. And when a site like Parlor comes along that opens its doors widely; the censors move in quickly to ensure that this voice cannot be heard. Those who are smiling right now that this is the way things should be, that those wild and crazy Trump supporters are getting what they deserve, should be aware that loving hate never has a happy ending. The great British author C. S. Lewis described it best, “Suppose one reads a story of filthy atrocities in the paper. Then suppose that something turns up suggesting that the story might not be quite true, or not quite so bad as it was made out. Is one’s first feeling, ‘Thank God, even they aren’t quite so bad as that,’ or is it a feeling of disappointment, and even a determination to cling to the first story for the sheer pleasure of thinking your enemies are as bad as possible? If it is the second, then it is, I am afraid, the first step in a process which, if followed to the end, will make us into devils. You see, one is beginning to wish that black was a little blacker. If we give that wish its head, later on, we shall wish to see grey as black and then to see white itself as black. Finally, we shall insist on seeing everything — God and our friends and ourselves included — as bad, and not be able to stop doing it: we shall be fixed forever in a universe of pure hatred.”

What is different today from our past history is that we have lost our common values. Instead of unity, the new mantra is uniformity. To disagree with ‘political correctness,’ the established truth of those who control the avenues of information, is not just wrong but dangerous. It must be extinguished. Thus, the only commonality becomes hate from both sides of the political correctness spectrum; those who advocate for it and those who absolutely stand against it. Hate has always existed, and it is a very powerful weapon. George W. Bush defeated Al Gore by the slimmest margin, and his approval ratings through the year 2001 were barely over fifty percent. Yet, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and President Bush’s visit to New York City, his approval rating went over 90 percent. They did not necessarily like Bush better; they simply rallied around him when faced with a common foe that they hated. When that threat went down, so did his approval ratings. Today, the hate is not pointed toward foreign terrorists but against our own citizens. Our entire history is now seen through a prism of hate. Statues of former presidents and leaders must be abolished because they do not match our current sentiments. Even worse, anyone advocating a position that does not agree with the current political correctness must be silenced or “cancelled.” Even a teenager must be listened to if they spout justified hate. What is now known as Cancel Culture has resulted in anyone who wishes to dissent is automatically a ‘hater’ and must therefore be silenced.

hat would Valentine’s Day be without images of a goldentressed boy armed with bow and arrows? The arrows represent feelings of love and desire, and they are aimed and cast at various individuals, causing them to fall deeply in love — or fall out of it. In Roman mythology, the boy is known as Cupid and is the son of Venus, the goddess of love. Portrayed as a cherubic and mischievous toddler,
this magical boy was purported to be the matchmaker of gods and mortals alike. For students of Greek mythology, Cupid represents Eros, the Greek word for “desire.” He was the son of Aphrodite, Venus’ Hellenistic counterpart, and would play with the hearts of mortals and gods, sometimes leaving mayhem in his wake. In Greek mythology, Eros was more teenager than bubbly baby, and capitalized on his status as a heartthrob rather

The Story of Cupid
than the cherubic status of Roman mythology, according to Richard Martin, a Stanford University professor. While Cupid may have been an adorable imp, some historians say Eros had a darker side, going so far as to describe him as calculating and sinister — forcing the wrong people into lovelorn matches. According to Museum Hack, while Cupid could make people fall in and out of love, he also was once in love himself. In this telling, Cupid is a young man when Venus learns that a mortal girl is born with such great beauty that others start to forget to worship Venus, adoring this girl instead. Upset about the misdirected adoration toward this mortal, Venus asks Cupid to have the girl, Psyche, fall in love with a monster. Cupid agrees, but once he sees Psyche he “accidentally” hits himself with one of his own golden arrows and falls in love with Psyche. The resulting match does not prove easy, and through a series of unfortunate events, Psyche must prove her love to Cupid and accomplish various tasks to win back his heart. Eventually, Psyche does and achieves goddess status.

Cupid has been portrayed both as a young man and child through Renaissance art and beyond. When Valentine’s Day became popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, Cupid was linked to Valentine’s Day celebrations due to his matchmaking abilities. His popularity only continued in the early 20th century, when Hallmark began to manufacture Valentine’s Day cards featuring Cupid. Cupid helped push people together in ancient mythology, and he can even be the catalyst for modern day matchmaking as well.

Taxes Can Be Taxing By Julie Reed Advantage Tax
I
t was quite the year in 2020, and where you might have noticed it the most was preparing taxes, paying taxes, and interactions with the IRS. I hope this article is helpful as we enter the 2021 tax filing season for tax year 2020. First, the IRS is not accepting any returns before February 12, 2021. They are backlogged, but I will address that later in this article. This does not mean you cannot prepare your taxes or that your tax professional is not ready to do your taxes. It simply means the completed taxes will sit in a queue and get dumped on the 12th along with 30 million of your best friends’ returns. I highly recommend that if you have all your documents and if
you use a tax professional, do not wait to get them your documents. The tax deadline is still the 15th of April. Even though the initial filing date is much later, that makes the crunch of the season even shorter. Second, be prepared for two questions that you have never heard before. The first one is how much did you receive in stimulus payments? They must be broken out by year, meaning how much in 2020 and how much in 2021. This is not being asked to tax the stimulus payments, rather to identify folks that should have gotten it but did not get it. Or the opposite, identifying people that got the payment and should not have. During the year, the second question is did you sell, send, exchange, or otherwise acquire a virtual currency, such as Bitcoin. Yes, they want to know

probably be slower because they are in the midst of doing a year of work in 65 days. Finally, the backlog. I called the IRS to assist a client about two weeks ago. I was on hold for 2 hours and 31 minutes, and that is calling a special preparers hotline that you do not have access to. I was able to resolve the problem, but it took me since November to even get the chance to enjoy a 2 hour and 31-min-
ute hold. I know that it is frustrating; I still have clients that cannot get their refunds but please be understanding. During the tax season, the onset of COVID resulted in such a large backlog that the system will still need time to iron out. Unfortunately, it will spill over into this season too. The only good news is if you are
owed a refund, the IRS will pay you interest. Please be patient and don’t throw your cellphone against the wall when you can’t get through; it just costs you more money.

us dying walking up the smallest hill. I couldn’t do the whole hill without stopping. I then started to focus more on the food rather than worrying about exercise at that point. The following January (six months later), I decided to do “Country Heat” through Beachbody. It was a workout that was good for beginners, and you danced. That sounded like fun! During that month, I lost 13 inches! I was blown away. Tania was still in with my weight loss, but we weren’t on it much together that fall. I think after I did “Country Heat” she bought the DVD too! She was ready to start really getting those numbers down too. I suggested that we weigh in every week together. So that February or March (I can’t remember exactly which month), we told each other what we weighed and what our goals were. I wanted to get down to the weight I was when I was first married. She wanted to get back in her favorite Daisy Duke shorty-shorts she used to wear back in the good old days. We laughed and dreamed of

being our high school weight again. Then we set realistic goals, ones that we knew we could hit. 50 lbs. would be a good goal. Our first goal was to hit 30 lbs. (we were almost there), then 40 lbs., then 50 lbs. — and by George, we both hit those numbers! Texting each other every single week on weigh-in mornings whether we were up 2 lbs. or down a pound. We have never missed a week yet! Having someone to hold you accountable is one of the best things you could do for yourself. Having Tania to go to during big or small victories is

hills and not stop. See, small little victories! I was almost to 60 lbs. I got to 58 lbs., and it’s like the weight just stopped. I let that scale get the best of me. I went back down to 50 lbs. just a few months ago. See, I thought I gained that back over the holidays until I looked back at my weigh-ins. Another tip that has really helped me. Take pictures of your scale or write it down in a small calendar book once a week. Once I looked, I realized that I had slowly started gaining that back since the end of August till November! Then over the holidays, I actually maintained.
I told Tania this, and she looked back on her weigh-ins too. The crazy part is that we both gained in the same months! We were like, what on earth happened this fall? (2020) COVID? Comfort Food? Not exercising as much as I was? We didn’t understand why we didn’t catch this, though? See, I was still in my maintaining zone. I went up and down in that 5 lb. area for months until I got discouraged not hitting that 60 lbs. If I didn’t have those pictures with dates to look back on, I wouldn’t have caught it. Neither of us would have.
Every week we were telling each other up a pound or down a pound but never really tallied. But those “up .3 lbs.” add up over time. Now, we are tallying up the end of each month! So, this month, I was down a total of 2.3 lbs. I’ve really kicked in the exercise again and I’m just loving it. I hate when I stop, honestly. I instantly feel heavier. Exercise just makes me feel more confident and healthier! I have done a lot of Beachbody programs and really enjoy it. Right now, I am doing the Control Freak 9-week program.

so awesome. Even on tough days, I can text her and vent. Like, “Girl, I just went 400 calories over what I was supposed to eat today!” She would tell me it’s OK, just work it off tomorrow, or that I need a day like that every once in a while. I can be really hard on myself! But then I look back and see pictures of myself and think, “I did that!” Fifty pounds is a lot of weight, and I have kept it off since I started back in 2018. Tania and I will find pictures of each other and text them, just for a reminder of just how far we have come. I am happy to say I can do even bigger

Loving it! I work out five days a week, but my goal is at least three days at the minimum! Listen, I am not skinny, but I am not extremely overweight like I was. I feel good about where I am, but I really want to lose at least another 25 lbs. That’s my goal. Get back down to my wedding weight. I have dropped four pant sizes and three shirt sizes. Fiftythree pounds and 25 inches as of today. All by just starting out with small changes and having one of my very best
friends right by my side. I actually literally just hung up the phone with Tania; we talked for an hour. I called about one thing, and then we got on our weight loss. Setting new goals for this year, together. I have been trying a lot of new products, workouts, and new snacks and foods to keep things new and fresh for myself. You have to keep things new and fun! Yes, it’s hard work, but you have to do what works for you! Maybe counting points works for you.
Maybe counting calories works for you. Maybe writing everything down and seeing what you eat every week will work for you. Find what works for you and something you can stick to, and I am telling you, you will be on the path to success! Do what WORKS for YOU!! I’ll never be a size 4. I’ll probably never be a size 8. I’m fine with that. I want healthy. I want to feel good. I want to be proud! I love to eat; y’all see the way I cook. I am not giving up things I love — I am working so I can have what I love but still be disciplined. Create healthy habits, not restrictions. Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements. You already have what it takes! Five Ingredient Healthy Egg Muffins Ingredients: • 2 cups of egg whites • 6 eggs • 3/4 cup shredded cheese or any other cheese • 3/4 cup chopped cooked broccoli or any other veggie • Pinch of salt or pepper (You also could add ham or turkey sausage if you don’t want the veggies! Or you can use both!)
Directions: Preheat the oven to 375, grease muffin tin with cooking spray. Whisk together egg whites, eggs, and salt and pepper. Mix in cheese. Steam your broccoli or I use the broccoli you can steam right in the bag. Divide broccoli in 12 muffin tins. (This is when you would add the meat also.) Pour egg and cheese mixture over the broccoli in each cup. Fill almost to the top but DON’T over fill. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until eggs are set. Let cool for 10 minutes before removing from the pan.

UPMC Doctor: Tips to Prevent Cold Weather Skin Issues By Sabrina Mikita, MD Dermatology, UPMC

ur skin is one of our hardest working organs. It not only protects all the other organs in our bodies, and can repair itself, but it also regulates body temperature and detects and fights off infection. Healthy skin is an essential part of your overall health and wellness, yet most of us take our skin for granted, especially in the winter.
Winter’s Effects on Skin Frequent hand washing and sanitizer use may already be taking a toll on your hands as the pandemic continues, but as temperatures and humidity levels continue to drop, other body parts can also get itchy, cracked, and irritated. The harsh weather can strip the skin’s natural protective barrier, creating gaps in the outer most layer, allowing water to escape promoting dehydration and irritants to get in. The dry environment may be responsible for that uncontrol-

your skin stayed the same as it did in the summer. This could be because of the routine you have in place. If your skin changed and became dryer than usual, this may mean you need to better prepare your skin for winter. If you know your skin is prone to drying out from cold weather, a way to prepare your skin before and during the winter is to stick to short and warm showers. Long, hot showers can feel great after a cold day, but can strip your skin of important oils, leaving it dry. red patches with silvery scales. Psoriasis almost always requires prescription treatment because of the underlying autoimmune disease, but the best option varies depending on how much of the skin is impacted. Lack of sun exposure during winter months can also have an effect on psoriasis so your provider may consider phototherapy, a treatment that essentially involves using a light box to expose skin to controlled amounts of UV light in order to dampen inflammation. Preparation Can Go a Long Way Dry skin can make for an uncomfortable winter which is why preparation is key as we continue through the cold winter months. If you’re having trouble managing your skin care, talk to a dermatologist. Your dermatologist can help you develop a routine and care plan to meet your skin’s unique needs. If you’re experiencing severely dry or chapped skin, or if you’ve recently developed a rash that’s not improving, talk to your doctor as these could be signs of a dermatologic condition or symptoms of more serious illness or allergic reaction. exactly what its name implies: moisturizes. Moisturizing your skin in preparation for the cold weather and during the winter can help your skin from becoming dried out. An oil-free moisturizer that contains glycerin is best to help keep skin hydrated. Some Conditions Require Special Treatment: If you have eczema or psoriasis, you will have to do more than simply slather on extra lotion and drink more water. In the case of eczema, your body overreacts to an external trigger, such as dust mites or perfumes in cosmetics and soaps. Eczema develops as itchy, red skin, often in areas where skin touches skin, such as in the bends of the arms or knees. If you have eczema, it’s important to use fragrance-free, hypoallergenic soap and moisturizers, as fragrances can cause allergies and further trigger itchiness and inflammation. One over-the-counter cream that may help provide relief from symptoms. You should also use scent-free hypoallergenic laundry detergent for the same reason. Certain fabrics, such as those made with wool, may be irritating to delicate skin as well. In the case of psoriasis, a hyperactive immune response causes new skin cells to proliferate more quickly than old ones can be shed. The result is that cells pile up on top of each other, causing

earts abound on February 14, and few symbols (and gifts) are more widely associated with a holiday than heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are with Valentine’s Day. Chocolates became trendy in the mid19th century when the first chocolate bar was made by British company J.S. Fry & Sons by combining cacao powder with sugar and cacao butter to make a rich, melt-in-your-mouth treat that was markedly different than the gritty and greasy drinking chocolate that was losing popularity in Europe. Within a few years, competitor Cadbury introduced the first box of chocolates. It was called the “Fancy Box” and it didn’t take long to become wildly popular. The marriage of chocolate and heartshaped boxes seemed a natural progression, but the National Valentine Collectors Association says that heart-shaped boxes actually predate chocolate boxes. Various heart-shaped vessels, including “betrothal pendants” and silver boxes in the shape of hearts, were popularized a century earlier. There even were heart-shaped porcelain boxes as well as ones for sewing. Having already introduced a chocolate box, Richard Cadbury marketed the first Valentine’s Day box in 1861. It was filled with delicious chocolates, and later could be saved as a keepsake to store special notes or other mementos, according to the

North American Packaging Association. Furthermore, the gift fit with Victorian sensibilities in that it was demurely suggestive, NPR reports. Its introduction coincided perfectly with Valentine’s Day, which also soared in popularity around the same time. Giving chocolate on Valentine’s Day also proved popular in North America. The American chocolate company Hershey’s introduced its Hershey’s Kisses in 1907, and in 1912 the Whitman’s Sampler arrived. In the 1920s, Russell Stover unveiled their own heart-shaped boxes, which today still include the “Red Foil Heart” and the “Secret Lace Heart.” Russell Stover has since become the No. 1 boxed chocolate brand in the United States. Today, more than 36 million heartshaped boxes holding 58 million pounds of chocolate are sold each year, reports the education resource SoftSchools. They have become a quintessential symbol of Valentine’s Day celebrations.

. Walton Bowman prominent businessman and sportsman of Williamsport died suddenly of a heart attack about 5:30 o’clock last night while driving his automobile towards the city on the Montoursville Road. He was returning from a trip to Wilkes-Barre when his automobile skidded across the highway and into an embankment. It is believed the shock of the accident and the exertion of shoveling snow from around the car brought about the heart attack that proved fatal. Mr. Bowman had been prominent in business circles all of his life. He was vice president of the Bowman Lumber Company, which his father, Benjamin founded, and secretary-treasurer of the Bowman Land Company. His greatest prominence was as the president of the Williamsport Baseball Club, and as organizer and treasurer of the Imperial Teteques Band. He was one of the original “triple tongue cornet quartet.” Word of his death swept Williamsport
quickly. Many calls were received at this newspaper’s office and by close friends of the family. It was as a baseball enthusiast that Bowman was best known. In fact, Williamsport’s place in baseball since the early part of the present century, is due in large part to the interest and support of Bowman and his older brother, Francis. When the Tri-State League became popular in the early years of the century, it was the financial support of the two Bowman brothers that was largely instrumental in placing in Williamsport one of the best teams outside major league baseball. With organization of the present New York-Pennsylvania League in 1923, J. Walton Bowman and Thomas Gray, were largely responsible for getting Williamsport a berth in the new circuit. Bowman Field, present home of the Williamsport Grays in Memorial Park, was named for Bowman in 1929. J. Walton Bowman also had the distinction of owning the first automobile in Williamsport.

a short while: too quickly, it was apparent that Eleanor and Franklin were colossally mismatched. She needed him to need her but he couldn’t – not in the way she wanted, so she found love in the arms of another man and a woman. Her compassion for others, a rather acquired sense, helped buoy his ambition; his ambition gave her a reason to dig in and reach out to their fellow Americans in need. Despite that it invited controversy from Washington insiders, Roosevelt changed the office of the First Lady

Through the years, you’ll scribble ideas, compose thoughtfully, add chapters, and crumple pages. Your life’s book might be a series of quick notes, long essays, one-liners or, as in “Eleanor” by David Michaelis, you could build an epic story. In today’s world, we might call Eleanor Roosevelt’s mother abusive: Anna Hall Roosevelt never had a kind word to say to her daughter, often mockingly calling little Eleanor “Granny.” It’s true that
Eleanor wasn’t lithe and beautiful like her mother; she was awkward and stern, a Daddy’s girl for an often-absent, alcoholic father. Orphaned by the time she was 12, Eleanor had been long-told that she was homely and plain but school chums knew her as a caring girl with a sharp mind. That intelligence later caught the eye of the dashing Franklin Roosevelt, a somewhatdistant cousin who courted her with the nose-holding approval of his mother. It was a good match, but only for

Such tales are told matter-of-factly and without salaciousness, though you may feel a whoop of delight at a supposedlystaid Depression-era White House that really was a den of dalliance. by ignoring what past First Ladies had done, once they reached the White House and beyond... Readers who are not deep historians are in for many layers of surprise inside “Eleanor,” the first being Roosevelt’s early life, and the racism she exhibited as a young woman. Famously, she was a champion of African Americans during the years of her husband’s time as President and beyond, and she strove for equality, but author David Michaelis shows a sort of axis of attitude that the former First Lady experienced. His portrayal is balanced with compassion: Michaelis lets us see a transformation in the pages of this book and it’s fascinating to watch. Rather than romanticize Roosevelt, Michaelis paints her as someone with flaws that she may not’ve overtly acknowledged but that she learned to work around. This becomes abundantly clear in tales of the warmth Roosevelt craved but was denied by her husband and the relationships she enjoyed in open secret, including a passionate love she shared with reporter

wo weeks ago, the basketball community mourned the loss of legendary former basketball coach John Chaney, at the age of 89. In 2001 he was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame. But did you know that Chaney had a Williamsport connection? During their last two seasons of existence, that connection was his play for the Williamsport Billies of the Eastern Professional Basketball League during the 1962-63 and 1963-64 seasons. He served as a player-coach in one of those seasons, providing him with some of his first coaching experience. Chaney had a fine career in the old EBL. He was a seven-time EBL AllStar. Before coming to Williamsport, he played for the Sunbury Mercuries. He was a two-time EBL All-Star
Team Most Valuable Player in 1959 and 1960, and two-time EBL season Most Valuable Player, 1959 and 1960. It was quite a coup for the Williamsport Billies when they acquired him from Sunbury following the 1961-1962 season. I remember asking the late Bill Pickelner, one-time owner of the Billies, about Chaney at the time of Chaney’s induction in the Hall of Fame in 2001. He told me that John Chaney “was a great guy and a wonderful player, who brought great leadership skills and determination to the basketball court, and I could tell then that he had the stuff to be a fine coach.” Pickelner was certainly right. Chaney became a successful high school coach in the competitive Philadelphia area leagues with the Simon Gratz High School from 1966 to 1972.
His good work at Gratz landed him a job at Cheney State College from 1972 to 1982, garnering an enviable 225-59. This fine record landed him a shot at big-time college basketball with the Temple Owls. It was there that he really made his mark with a sparkling 516-253 record. While at Temple, the Owls under Chaney won or shared 15 Big Five Conference championships, six Atlantic 10 conference championships, and reached the

We may also choose them simply because we feel good when we are with them. Friendship might also exist partly for geographical reasons. Perhaps you work together or are members of the same club. You may be neighbors and happen to see each other often enough to expand your relationship into other social areas. The book outlines three main networking styles that people use to socialize: Conveners, Brokers, and Expansionists. Conveners form interconnected relationships, and it is likely that multiple friendships are formed within a group. An example of this might be a group of parents whose children all belong to the same soccer team. Brokers, on the other hand, tend to form relationships that cross boundaries less.

O
K, I’ll reveal my age a bit by telling you that there is a Peter, Paul and Mary song, “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” that has been ringing in my head as I have been putting my thoughts together about this article. It is stuck there and it keeps going through my brain over and over, sort of like the question “Where has all the ammo gone.” If you have any interest whatever in hunting or shooting these days, you have, no doubt, been asking that same question for some time now. It really began early last year and there seems to be no apparent end in sight. Shelves normally housing ammunition in just about every store you go into are either bare, or host only a few boxes of various ammunition – most of which are oddball calibers or off-brands you would not normally purchase. So
what is behind this shortage? Conspiracy theories abound in today’s news media and run rampant in the various social medias. The most common one is that the U S Government is buying up all the ammo they can and thus little is available to the general public – you and me. Not true. The truth lays behind the meteoric rise in recent firearms sales across the country, and here are some eye-popping statistics that support that notion. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) is the major keeper of statistics regarding firearm sales. According to their records, in the year 2020, 40 percent of the gun sales were for first-time gun buyers, totaling 8.4 million new gun owners in the United States in 2020. As shown in the data from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), 21 million background checks related to the sale of firearms were conducted in

more than a dozen other videos on YouTube that will, hopefully, help you understand what is going on. I am afraid we all need to just be patient. Firearm sales do not appear to be slowing and are forecast to be robust. Thus, for the foreseeable future, ammunition will be slow to be placed back on shelves. In the meanwhile, here is something to consider as an alternative. When have you last done an inventory of the ammunition you currently have? Do you have any ammunition that goes to a firearm that you no longer own? Or do you have more ammunition of a particular handgun or rifle caliber or shotgun gauge than you will need in the foreseeable future? Consider doing some swapping. Gather whatever you have that you really don’t need and contact your hunting or shooting friends. Perhaps they need some of what you have and you can swap them for something that they have that you are looking for. It may be the surest and quickest way to obtain what you want but can’t find at any of the local retailers. Good Luck!

2020 – a 60 percent increase over the previous year. It may also be interesting to note that firearms ownership is increasingly diverse as sales among women accounted for 40 percent of all sales, and purchase by African Americans increased by 56 percent compared to 2019. So far, in 2021, the numbers of firearms sales are on track to set another record – above the figures recorded for 2020. So, how is this related to the lack of ammunition of store shelves? Understandably, and generally speaking, store owners tend to “hold back” some ammunition so that they can sell a box or two to someone who is also purchasing a firearm. If they have more than required for their firearms purchasers, it goes on the shelf – which is, unfortunately, very little at this time. To get a perhaps clearer picture of what is going on with the ammunition industry, I would recommend that you go to YouTube.com and watch a video of Jason Vanderbrink, President of Federal, CCI, Speer and Remington explaining the current state of the industry. hese days seeing four capital letters followed by a number is a bit disturbing — oh no, a disease or pandemic or some new variation of an existing disease. I’m sure we’ve all had our share of disease and pandemic news. I hesitate to even bring up RHDV2, but thankfully, this disease does not pose any risk to human health; however, it is a serious threat to wild and domestic rabbit populations. I bring the subject up because rabbit hunting is still a popular activity here in Pennsylvania, and the season is open until February 27. If you are a rabbit hunter or you own domestic rabbits, you should be aware of RHDV2. First, a brief history. Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHDV1),

the original form of the disease, is thought to have emerged in Europe in the 1970s or 80s. In 1984 a major outbreak in China killed 14 million domestic rabbits within nine months. RHDV2 is Ken a new strain of the disease Hunter that was first detected in France in 2010 and has now been found in several states in the southwestern U.S. A likely reason for it showing up in the U.S. is that European rabbits are often sold in the United States as pets or for food or other products. The disease has been detected in domestic rabbits in Ohio and New York. Naturally, there is great concern that RHDV2, a very resilient virus that can remain on the landscape for months and can survive freezing temperatures, could show

assist. If you find any wild rabbit or hare mortality involving two or more, don’t move them and report your findings to the nearest Game Commission office or by email through pgccomments@ pa.gov using “RABBIT VIRUS DETECTION” in the subject field. Also, don’t trap and transfer rabbits or release wild rabbits from other locations. Also, don’t handle sick looking rabbits and report such cases to the Game Commission. You should also keep domestic rabbits and their waste from coming into contact with wild populations. In the meantime, the Game Commission has started field studies, and they are trying to create a list of those who would be interested in assisting monitoring during the hunting season. If you would like to get involved, contact the commission at pgccomments@pa.gov and type “RABBIT VIRUS HELPER” in the subject field.

up here in our state. The disease could spread and even wipe out wild rabbit and hare populations. Pennsylvania is actually home to not one but two cottontail species: the eastern cottontail and the rarer Appalachian cottontail. We also have a limited population of snowshoe hares in the northern portion of the state. RHDV2 can be transmitted directly from rabbit to rabbit or indirectly through feces, urine, and blood-feeding insects. At this time, there is no treatment for the disease, so prevention is a key factor. The Game Commission, along with the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine, will be working with other federal and state agencies, conservation groups, the media, and other interested groups in an effort to monitor and hopefully control the virus. In the meantime, there are some things we as hunters can do to

later. As is all-too-often the case, management and unions can look at the same picture and come away with different interpretations. But to this writer, it is mind-boggling that any reasonably thinking human being with knowledge of the current health crises and the upcoming availability of millions of people being vaccinated in the next thirty days couldn’t agree to a one-month delay that seems so right for so many reasons. While NBA and NHL teams completed their 2019/20 seasons tightly constrained in bubble-like locations, MLB somewhat miraculously completed a reduced 60game season with expanded playoffs using all 30 of its stadiums. The NFL conducted its season at all its team locations, but playing once a week presented fewer issues than the every day games played by MLB in its 30 stadiums across the country and in Toronto. As the pandemic now stretches out into its second year of havoc, not many would have anticipated that the upcoming baseball season would begin with once again no fans in the stands. That is the reality we are facing. Given everyone’s strong desire to get back to the prepandemic lives we all enjoyed, it seems unreasonable that grown men on both sides of the MLB question couldn’t come to an agreement that could allow a 2021 MLB season to be played more safely amidst such a nationwide health crisis. In light of that failed accomplishment, I question their claim to be professionals.
Arizona communities, where 15 of MLB’s teams conduct spring training, had asked MLB for a delay in spring training as the state is a hotbed in COVID-19 cases. Being a huge baseball fan and frequent visitor to the Arizona Cactus League, the proposal smacked of common sense under the circumstances we are facing and seemed like a NO-BRAINER. Therein lays the rub. All our brains do not think alike. The plan was presented to the MLB Players Union on February 1. One day later, February 2, the player’s union flatly rejected the proposal insisting on Spring Training’s start on February 17 and the regular 162-game season on March 28. In their refusal to accept MLB’s plan, or even offer a counteroffer, the MLBPA issued the following statement: “The MLBPA Executive Board and Player leadership reviewed and discussed the owners’ proposal throughout. The clearcut result of these deliberations is that Players will not accept MLB’s proposal, will instead continue preparations for an on-time start to the 2021 season, and will accept MLB’s commitment to again direct its Clubs to prepare for an on-time start.” However, the MLBPA’s statement (perhaps purposely) omitted the “real” reasons behind their non-acceptance: mistrust of the owners, monetary greed, and the biggest issue of them all; the fact that MLB’s contract with the Players Union expires at the end of the 2021 season, no one wants to “give away” bargaining chips they may want to use

bucket carrying organized through local conservation organizations, schools, and other groups. All volunteers selected will be required to wear personal protective gear, including masks and gloves, and practice social distancing while participating in stocking operations. “We appreciate the feedback we received from many anglers who were disappointed last season because we suspended volunteer stocking help due to pandemic. While we welcome the day when we can all return to normal, we think that offering these limited volunteer opportunities this season is a big step in the right direction,” said Richard Lewis, president of the PFBC Board of Commissioners. “With the help of these experienced volunteers, we will be able to most effectively spread the trout out throughout the streams to provide the best opening day experience for all anglers as well as sustained fishing throughout the spring.” To inform anglers of trout stocking dates and locations, a stocking schedule will be provided on the PFBC website and FishBoatPA mobile app beginning on Feb. 1. While anglers are encouraged to reference the schedule to prepare for their fishing adventures throughout the trout season, any unsolicited “walk-on” stocking volunteers will not be permitted to assist with stocking. Anglers are reminded that all stocking dates are subject to change due to weather conditions and other factors, and they should check the stocking schedule throughout the season. Hang in there, folks. Tight lines. Cheers

To prepare for the consolidated statewide trout season schedule, the PFBC will begin pre-season trout stocking operations on Feb. 15, about two weeks earlier than in previous seasons. This change will allow hatchery staff to deliver trout to many waters ahead of the Statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day and, weather permitting, all waters before the Statewide Opening Day. Due to this change, all designated streams as Stocked Trout Waters will be closed to angling when stocking begins on Feb. 15. To provide for additional angling opportunities during this time, trout that are stocked in lakes, reservoirs, and ponds during the pre-season will be open to catch-and-release angling but may not be harvested until Statewide Mentored Youth Day and Statewide Opening Day. In addition, fishing will be closed on the Lake Erie tributaries and Presque Isle Bay from 12:01 a.m. on April 2 until 8 a.m. on April 3. This temporary modification to the trout season, size, and creel limits will mirror regulation changes that occur annually in the Lake Erie region prior to the regular Statewide Opening Day and are designed to protect against the overharvest of steelhead. To achieve the highest quality stocking operations, the PFBC will be reintroducing limited volunteer opportunities in 2021. However, to protect the safety of PFBC staff and the public, volunteer opportunities will not be available to the general public. Instead, volunteers will be recruited from an existing pool of individuals who have traditionally assisted with float stocking and
