Into the Shark Tank and Then Straight to China

M

y column was to follow up where I left off last week with “Always Question Science, Medicine, and Government.” It was to cover the complete fleecing of America by the long-serving elected in Washington. That will have to wait until next week. You’ll be shocked by the multimillionaires that have grown at the trough of the American taxpayer. A pungent example of this very greed, narcissism, and above reproach surfaced on the top of the water this past week. Before I get to billionaire Mark Cuban, let’s take a look at excerpts from last week to lead you in. Please remember all previous columns within the Webb Weekly are archived on our website. “Anyone serving in Washington for more than two terms in any capacity is part of the problem. This beast, which has been created in Washington, is controlled by the largest corporations in the world and the billionaires that own them. What is occurring has nothing to do with political affiliation; it has become a long-term peaceful takeover of our Nation. “Anyone that thinks our federal government is working for the good of the people and deserves our trust is only saying that because they are benefiting from a corrupt system. “This world order of capitalistic vampires

wants much more than your money. They want the soul of your constitutional freedom. They want to feed on our Nation as long as possible. They don’t care about the consequence.” So, for those of you that might have missed it. Billionaire business entrepreneur Cuban, made famous by the show “Shark Tank” and his ownership of the Dallas Mavericks, declared he would not play the National Anthem prior to his team’s games. This beyond self-indulgent individual who was raised in Pennsylvania, and has made his wealth under the cover of the American Flag, believes he is enlightened to the point where our star-spangled banner is insignificant. It goes without saying he’s convinced he is untouchable at whatever he chooses to do or say also. Everything he is was made possible by the United States of America. Cuban can’t even grasp the insult this is to the men and women who serve our great Nation, many paying with their futures, or the true blessing it is to live in America. This ignorant, conceited jack-astronaut wants to put an end to honoring America by the playing of the National Anthem and saluting of the Stars and Stripes. Enough of this already. Simply follow the money trail, and this capitalistic vampire’s approach becomes obvious. Like

most billionaires, he is a global player that uses the freedom of America for his protection. The growth of many of his corporations, including the Mavericks, has strong global ties, especially with China. The NBA ratings have taken Jim a nosedive in our Country. Webb, Jr. The Championship Finals ratings this past year were the lowest in 30 years. I am not gonna get into all the reasons why only to say the fact that he doesn’t want to play the National Anthem says all you need to know. The NBA’s fastest-growing market is currently within the borders of China. Here is what he’s missing. Americans are fed up with the Mark Cubans of the world. Without Americans watching, attending games, buying merchandise, and supporting the NBA, let’s see how long it takes to sink to the bottom of the shark tank. I can’t imagine in Dallas, Texas, home of America’s team, the Dallas Cowboys; you have someone who believes he can get away with sticking his middle fingers up at Americans that love God, Country, and Family. Let me spell it out for all you billionaire owners, millionaire players, and those that run every major sports league. There are clear and present reasons why players should stand and respect the National Anthem and the American Flag. Without

question, it is the right thing to do. You are making a lot of money playing a game, in the land of the free. Show some humility for just how fortunate you are. By doing so, you honor those that provided the very freedom that allows you to play a game. This opportunity is provided by the United States Armed Forces, which is made up of individuals from every walk of life. If the spineless owners and management of professional leagues don’t want to tell them the other reason why I will. You people are on the clock. You are at work. You must do what your employer expects of you. If you don’t like it, find another job. Where during one of the most visible points of any employment, can you hold a protest and express your political beliefs? I hold the Mark Cubans of the world responsible for allowing this to go on. Can you imagine if the workers at one of his global sweatshops wanted to hold a protest while the time clock was running? Absolutely despicable, Mr. Cuban. I think is would be in everyone’s best interest for Mr. Cuban to move his franchise to Shanghai. Let him, along with his players, live within the walls of China. This goes for any organization that doesn’t want to respect America — there’s the door, don’t let it hit you on the way out. In closing, the NBA did step in and overrule Cuban’s decision not to play the National Anthem prior to games. This too late to save Mr. Cuban from revealing who he really is. God Bless America.

guess we can chalk up yet another thing that the global pandemic has ruined. #ThanksCOVID. Mardi Gras in New Orleans typically means dancing in the streets, standing shoulder to shoulder with strangers, and watching one parade after another roll by while slowly becoming a human bead tree. But Mardi Gras 2021 will be different. Obviously, there were no parades and debauchery, but that doesn’t mean we can’t talk about the history of Mardi Gras and the Lenten season. But before we get to that, if you haven’t seen them yet, please take a minute to look up all the people who decorated their homes along parade routes in New Orleans to look like parade floats. They are beautiful, and there is no denying the ingenuity of people in times of need. Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating more decadent, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday. This year that’s February 17th. According to mardigrasnewsorleans.com, the origins of Mardi Gras can be traced as far back as medieval Europe, passing through Rome and Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries to the French House of the Bourbons. From here, the traditional revelry of “Boeuf Gras,” or fatted calf, followed France to her colonies. On March 2, 1699, French-Canadian explorer Jean Baptiste Le Moyne Sieur de Bienville arrived at a plot of ground 60

Mardi Gras is a long-standing tradition of the Catholic Church, and it marks the last day of ordinary time before the start of miles directly south of Lent, a time of fasting and repentance. New Orleans and named As Catholic Christianity spread throughout it “Pointe du Mardi Gras” Europe during the first millennium, when his men realized it different cultures celebrated the last day was the eve of the festive before Lent in their own ways, adapting the holiday. In France, Louis de la Mobile’s tiny the holiday became particularly popular as settlement celebrated people feasted on foods that would be given America’s very first Steph up during the forty days of Lent. Meats, Mardi Gras. Nordstrom eggs, and milk were finished off in one day. By the late 1830s, New Now that you and I both know a little Orleans held street processions of maskers with carriages and more about Mardi Gras’ history let’s ask horseback riders to celebrate Mardi Gras. the real question. Why do Mardi Gras, Ash Dazzling gaslight torches, or “flambeaux,” Wednesday, and Easter fall on different lit the way for the ‘krewe’s’ members and dates each year? To calculate the date for Mardi Gras, added to the festivity. Krewes are the people we must first figure out when Easter is. who put parades and activities together Easter will always fall on the first Sunday during Mardi Gras. The tradition of throwing beads and other following the full moon that falls on or trinkets, known as ‘throws,’ during Mardi after the spring equinox — got that? So this Gras parades was established in 1870 year, the vernal equinox is March 20th. The by Mardi Gras krewe the Twelfth Night first full moon to follow is on March 28th. Therefore, Easter will fall the following Revelers. All that purple, green, and gold you see Sunday — April 4th. With me so far? Now during Mardi Gras? Yep, that has meaning that we have Easter, we now count back too! Purple is for justice; gold is for power, 47 days. That’s 40 days and 40 nights, not and green is for faith. The Grand Duke of counting Sundays. You have officially found Ash Wednesday. Of course, we know, Mardi Russia chose these in 1857. Since then, Mardi Gras parties have gotten Gras — or Fat Tuesday — is the day before bigger and better, with much decadence Ash Wednesday! Now, go ahead and figure ensuing. But even in New Orleans, the party out when Mardi Gras will be next year — must end, and tradition must follow. Mardi I’ll wait. Hopefully, next year, we’ll be able to celebrate more Ash Wednesday begins. traditionally.

African-Americans Have Been A Notable and Interesting Part of Lycoming County History By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

A

s we celebrate “Black History Month,” it is important to shine a light on some of the significant and notable things about African-Americans, and their important and interesting role in Lycoming County’s history. No one knows for sure when the first African-Americans made their first appearance in Lycoming County. It is highly possible that some of them were runaway slaves or free persons of color, looking for a better life. They probably toiled in farming, perhaps labored on the local canal or in the fledgling lumber industry. The Lycoming County area played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, the courageous group of people who helped to smuggle runaway slaves from the slave territories of the South, north to Canada. There were two centers of Underground Railroad activity in Lycoming County, the Muncy-Pennsdale area, whose participants were mostly Quaker; and the area just north of Williamsport, where Daniel Hughes lived, now known as

Freedom Road. Hughes was part black, part Mohawk, born in New York State in 1812. He was a man of towering stature at over 6 feet 7 inches and weighed about 300 pounds. He moved to this area in 1828 and married Annie Rotch. Hughes was a lumber river raftsman operating on the Susquehanna River between Williamsport and the area near Baltimore, Maryland. This occupation enabled him to smuggle escaped slaves to the Williamsport area, where he hid the fugitive slaves at his house. It was a great act of courage for Hughes to spirit these runaways to freedom. His wife and their 16 children were exposed to great danger in the process. It was against the law to assist slaves, punishable by imprisonment and large fines. Also, not everyone in the area was sympathetic to these runaway slaves’ plight, and those who aided them were subject to harassment and sometimes outright physical violence. Hughes often operated on moonless nights to lessen the chance of detection. He and his son, Robert, conducted slaves to the next “station” located near Trout Run, and the runaways would continue

Williamsport area, was Derrick Updegraff. He offered sanctuary at the Long Reach Plantation, located along South Reach Road. It later became the Thomas Lightfoot Inn before that structure was torn down in the first decade of the 21st century. Local African-Americans also distinguished themselves in the area of writing and literature. Williamsport native Julia C. Collins is reportedly the first black woman to write a novel in the United States, titled The Curse of Caste, which was published in 1865. Her grandson, Frank “Fay” Young, became the first full-time AfricanAmerican sportswriter when he did so in the 1930s for the Chicago Defender. He was a tireless promoter of great black athletes such as Jesse Owens and Joe Louis. He also campaigned tirelessly for the integration of Major League Baseball and was a confidant of Negro National League founder Andrew “Rube” Foster. One of the greatest figures in AfricanAmerican history, Frederick Douglass, a former slave, who became a friend of Presidents and a spokesman for the aspirations of this people, spoke to an audience in Williamsport on the nights of November 14 and 15, 1867, at Doebler’s Hall, which was located at the northeast corner of Pine and West Fourth Streets. In his first speech, he detailed a “simple plan for the elevation of the Negro.” To

their trek to Canada. After the Civil War, the Hughes family donated a portion of their property along Freedom Road as a cemetery for AfricanAmericans. Among those buried there are nine African-American veterans of the Civil War. Hughes’ story was memorialized for future generations through his greatgranddaughter’s efforts, the late Mamie Sweeting Diggs, who did many public presentations about the exploits of her courageous great-grandfather. She was recognized for her dedicated work and research by having an honorary doctorate degree conferred on her by Lycoming College. One of the most famous Underground Railroad stations in Lycoming County was located in Pennsdale and was known as the “House of Many Stairs.” At the time of its service on the Underground Railroad, it was the Bulls Head Tavern, owned by Edward Morris. It served as a stagecoach stop that helped to mask its activities as a sanctuary for runaway slaves. Another Pennsdale sanctuary for escaped slaves was Wolf Run House, owned by a Quaker named William Haines. The McCarty-Wertman House on Main Street in Muncy also served as a refuge for escaping slaves. The Quaker Meeting House in Pennsdale itself also served as a place of refuge for runaway slaves. BLACK HISTORY whites in the audience, he asked, “that blacks be left alone to forge their own position in society, that they be given a fair chance.” Douglas implored, “If you see him going to school, let him alone. If you see him going into a mechanic’s shop to learn a trade, let him alone. If you see him going to the ballot box, let him alone. Give him a chance to work out his own position.” To blacks, he urged, “steady, persevering work is the only road to greatness. Nature does the most for those that use the best means.” In his speech the second night, he chided

the federal government for its failure to enact legislation that would give blacks the right to vote. He advocated women’s suffrage more than a half-century before it became the law of the land. He said, “a man’s rights rest in three boxes, the ballot box, the jury box, and the cartridge box. Let no man be kept from the ballot box because of his color. Let no woman be kept from the ballot box because of her sex.” Douglass and all African-Americans got their wish three years later when the 15th Amendment was ratified, giving blacks the right to vote. momentous occasion, blacks across Pennsylvania organized celebrations marking the milestone on April 26, 1870. The Gazette and Bulletin wrote in its April 27, 1870 issue of the local celebration. “Never before yesterday was such a sight as the demonstration of enfranchised colored citizens in the city of Williamsport. Never before yesterday did a body of colored voters assemble together in a deliberative assembly in this city.” In Williamsport, hundreds of people lined city streets, 42 carriages and buggies paraded, and people carrying banners, some read “Equal Rights, and “Free Suffrage.” African-Americans played a role in philanthropic affairs locally as well. Perhaps none is so well known as a woman who was born into slavery named Mary Slaughter. She was born on the Myers plantation near Martinsburg, West Virginia, in 1835. She would eventually become the Myers’ favorite cook and housekeeper. She married her husband, William Slaughter, probably while living on the Myers plantation. After the Civil War in 1866, she and William moved to Williamsport. They served as custodians at the former St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. She was active at both the First Baptist and Bethel A.M.E. churches. Tragedy stalked Slaughter. She lost three children at an early age, and her husband died of tuberculosis in 1886.

She needed a constructive outlet to deal with her grief, so she became involved in bettering the lot of elderly black women. She began initially by providing meals to sick mothers. She opened her fourroom house on Walnut Street to elderly black women, and by 1897 it had evolved into the Aged Colored Women’s Home — a place for indigent, elderly AfricanAmerican women. She moved the facility to 124 Brandon Avenue, where it operated until 1973, some 39 years after her death at the age of 99 in 1934. Percy David (P.D.) Mitchell served as an inspiration to the black community and the community at large for almost 40 years. He was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, and came to Williamsport in 1943 to act as executive director of the BethuneDouglass Community Center. He had a keen interest in sports and was a key figure in organizing and coaching many of the sports teams at BethuneDouglas. He was also an avid and accomplished bowler, who also coached the first men’s and women’s bowling teams in the country to be recognized by the American Bowling Congress. He was a towering figure in local civic affairs, whose counsel was sought by both political and business leaders in the area. His involvement in the Kiwanis Club was one of his most notable activities. He was proud to have been elected the

ne of the most stressful tasks we will ever do as human beings is to make final arrangements for someone we love upon their death. If you’ve ever experienced this situation you certainly understand just how difficult this experience is, both emotionally & financially. So why not ensure that YOUR wishes are fulfilled and that your loved ones are protected. Planning your own final arrangements in advance, or planning in advance for someone you love, is a wise and prudent decision.

first African-American state governor of the Kiwanis Club. He received The Grit’s Meritorious Service Award in 1976. He is one of the most respected figures of any color in the history of Lycoming County. He died in 1981. In the education field, one woman teacher, Miss Lila Mae Fisher, stands as a trailblazer in teaching locally for African-Americans. The information on Fisher was obtained from an article on Williamsport Women by Mary Sieminski. “Miss Lila” as she was affectionately known, taught in local schools from 1909 to 1949. She taught at a time when the Williamsport schools were virtually segregated. She taught at the Emery School, which in 1938 became the former Bethune-Douglass Center, and she later taught at Transeau School. She enjoyed an excellent reputation and was remembered fondly by her former students. Williamsport’s African-Americans were always there when they were called to their country’s colors. Perhaps the most distinguished local black military figure was Navy Captain Chancellor “Pete” Tzomes, who was the first AfricanAmerican to command a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine. Tzomes described growing up in Williamsport to me in a June 2014 Webb Weekly article. He recalled that there were just two

neighborhoods that Williamsport’s blacks were concentrated in. Realtors and property owners would not sell to blacks outside of those two neighborhoods. “I remember very well when P.D. Mitchell only wanted to move two blocks from where he lived on Park Avenue up to High Street. It caused a great uproar,” Tzomes said. “Mr. Mitchell got death threats and rocks and bricks thrown through his windows.” Accommodations were segregated in Williamsport at the time. No hotel would take blacks in. As a result, Tzomes’ mother and a woman across the street, Mrs. Mellix, opened up tourist homes at their house for blacks who came to town to stay. When the famous jazz singing group the “Ink Spots” came to town, the Lycoming Hotel, now the Genetti, would not allow them to stay there, so they stayed at the two tourist homes. “The schools were not segregated, and you interacted and played with white kids,” Tzomes said. “But many times, when the parents of some of these children heard they were playing with you and hanging out with you, they told their children that they did not want their kids playing with you anymore because you were black.” Tzomes graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1967 and went on to a

BLACK HISTORY distinguished naval career. He died in 2020. Many distinguished African-Americans have appeared in Lycoming County as speakers or performers. In the social activist realm, foremost of these was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who spoke at Lycoming College in April 1958. He spoke about the successful Montgomery Bus Boycott. Mary McCleod Bethune, a crusader for equal rights and a great friend to Eleanor Roosevelt, spoke here in the 1940s. Dr. Ralph Bunche, former high U.N. official and winner of the Nobel Peace

Prize, spoke here during the 1970s. The first African-American elected President of the United States, Barack Obama, campaigned at Lycoming College in 2008, during a hard-fought Pennsylvania primary fight with Hilary Clinton. In the performing arts, legendary jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald performed locally with the Chick Webb Band in 1937. The great Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong performed here in 1957, and Duke Ellington and his band played here during the 1960s. The Duke Ellington Orchestra appeared locally during the 1950s.

Third Street Gym in February 1972. Former Heavyweight Champion Jersey Joe Walcott spoke here in the early 1970s. I am sure I may have missed some distinguished person or persons who might have appeared over the years, but I hope this gives you some flavor of the caliber of people that have come here over the years. I also hope that I have been able to show how deeply ingrained into the social, civic, and historical fiber of Lycoming County over the years, African-Americans have been. If any of you have any information about any additional information about local African-American history, please let us know.

In sports, some of the best of the Negro Leagues saw action locally at Bowman Field, including Buck Leonard, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Leon Day, and Rube Foster, just to name a few. Many baseball historians regard the man as the greatest black pitcher of the 19th Century, George Stovey, came from Williamsport. Wilt Chamberlin played here with the Harlem Globetrotters in the late 1950s. 1936 Olympic track gold medalist Jesse Owens spoke here in 1972. have made the best effort to make every Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting possible, but the recent snowstorms have housebound me more than I have liked. I have found it necessary to utilize the county’s videos of these meetings to keep informed. For the novice, watching these might be rather tedious, so I am providing some guidelines that should help. First, understand the camera is currently locked into one position, which is focused on the front table, typically having the solicitor, the three commissioners, and the administrative assistant. Since COVID, they rarely are all there. This means that they will be heard through a speaker. The camera angle also means that all those addressing the commissioners from the podium that is to the left and in front of the commissioners will not be in view of the camera. Only their voices will be heard. This does present some problems because when department heads come to address the commissioners, they do not introduce themselves, which means that many times the viewer is not exactly

sure who is speaking. Generally, they are speaking because an expenditure or issue that has arisen on the agenda pertains to their department. The names of these department heads can easily be found on the county’s website: lyco.org. The meeting itself follows a very set agenda. It will open with Commissioner Board President Scott Metzger offering a prayer, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Commissioner Metzger will then ask the public if they have any comments on agenda items only. By law, no official action can be taken by a governing body that the public cannot comment on first. Of course, this would require that the public knows what is being presented. If they are there in

of the various offices. Almost all of the groundwork for these decisions were made in meetings and conferences with the departments. This is why these ‘official action’ discussions and decisions almost seem rehearsed (which in some ways they are), but it is for a reason. The commissioners really and truly want the public to know that due diligence has been done on these areas for funding sources or anything else that can help save tax dollars. When all these administrative matters are covered, the fun begins. This is the time for “commissioner comments,” and these could be on anything at all. More times than not, there will be comments on the comments between the three men. These discussions are often quite lively and make it worth the suffering through an hour of mundane matters that preceded them. And last but not least are ‘public comments.’ When these are in person, it is generally because the individual has a really serious concern that they want to get off their chest. More often than not, with COVID, the public texts their concerns to the commissioners. The commissioners respond in some way or another, to the person’s satisfaction with the concern and sometimes not. Go to the lyco.org website, and the first icon on the left is “Commissioner Meetings” with the symbol of a camera. Click on it, sit down with your popcorn, and enjoy the show.

person, they can pick up an agenda at the entrance, and it also can be accessed by going to the county’s website. If a county resident wishes to comment, they go to the podium, identify themselves, and state their concern or support for a particular item on the agenda. The commissioners generally simply thank the individual and do not comment, which would come later in the agenda. Before COVID, there were often recognition ceremonies that followed, but since March 2020, these are sadly fewer and farther between. Public servants that were receiving ten/twenty/thirty-year pins or retirement were surrounded by their colleagues as they were recognized. Also, various causes had their ‘weeks’ or ‘months’ recognized that brought to the public attention many worthwhile causes. Hopefully, those features will return someday. What generally follows next would be bid openings, if there are any. These are quite anticlimactic as that is all that happens - the bids are opened, and the vendor and the amounts are quoted. No action is taken immediately, as these need to be reviewed extensively by the Chief Procurement Officer, Mya Toon. The actual purchase would then come up at a later meeting as an agenda item. These agenda items are what most of the meeting revolves around, termed ‘action items.’ The commissioners generally are granting the expenditures or initiatives

“I was very apprehensive about getting hearing aids. I went to Artisan Hearing Technologies and I immediately felt comfortable, and welcomed. The counseling and explanations were very easy to understand. No appointments that I have been to have been rushed. All the time that I needed was there. The attention to detail in every aspect of this was so good I didn’t even have any questions that she did not already answer. Most people wonder about price. Her prices were all inclusive and better than the other hearing centers because I did shop around. My hearing aids are worth every penny. They are so comfortable, I have forgotten to take them out at night. On a rating scale I gave Artisan Hearing Technologies, I give two thumbs up. I did not want to put my picture in the paper, but my experience at Artisan was so good I did it anyway.

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH. Blood pressure. Cholesterol. Blood sugar. Weight. And family history. These are just a few of the things doctors use to identify risk factors for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the country for both men and women. It’s important to get your heart checked — in-person or through virtual visits — to know your risk factors. Learn more at UPMC.com/CheckYourHeart.

LIVING WELL Not in Vain (Madison Victoria Publishing, 2020) is filled with over 160 real-life stories from grieving mothers through their initial discovery of their child’s drug abuse to their end in tragedy. The stories tell of emotional highs and lows and how their child’s addiction affected their families. They reveal things that the mothers wish they had known and done differently. It is a book about a taboo subject that needs to be brought to light if any progress is ever to be made in the fight against the terrible disease of addiction.

The stories told in Not In Vain are meant to raise awareness and provide some level of comfort to families and that they are not alone. In addition, the book tells of resources that families found in their journey. Yoxheimer writes, “The fear and heartache of it all cut deep into our family. I observed his struggle closely for years as he was in and out of recovery, but I never fully realized the dangerous toll that heroine placed on his mind and body. He told me more than once, ‘Mom, you don’t understand; I want to

use every day of my life.’He was right! I did not understand until after his death the power that the drug held against him. His brain was literally hijacked! In spite of committing himself to multiple rehabs, recovery houses in and out of the area, drug court, and 12-step meetings, he was unable to achieve uninterrupted sobriety...With every memory of him now, I question my failures and wonder why I did not do more to help him. I felt so sad and helpless! If I only knew then what I know now perhaps he would still be here… My deepest sorrow!” Drug addiction knows no geographic or socioeconomic boundaries. Education, occupation, and net worth

are meaningless when one is faced with addiction and parents often never see it coming. No one ever thinks that their child will one day become an addict, yet, whether it is through a series of events or a twist of fate, addiction can enslave even the best of us. It is only through awareness and open, honest conversations that people, families, and society as a whole will heal from drug abuse and addiction. 100% of the Amazon/K DP proceeds from both this Ebook and paperback for Volume 1 are being donated to the #NotInVain nonprofit to continue supporting the grieving mothers of those lost to the drug pandemic.

Andrea’s Home Cookin… can’t believe we are working our way to the end of February already. It’s unreal. I feel like once we get through February and March, we have winter in the bag. January always flies for us. My stepdad’s birthday is the first week of January, my daughter’s is the second week, and my husband’s is the third week. So needless to say, January goes so fast for us, and it is party-party all month long. My gram’s birthday is in there too, but this year we couldn’t celebrate with her, God love her. Gram, Lois Liddick, loved

parties. Mostly she loved throwing them or hosting anyone for dinner she could. I remember she would have missionaries from our church over for dinner pretty often, and sometimes even keep them overnight like she was running this little bed and breakfast. My gram served the Lord with all of her heart and did what she could for others anytime she was able. When I was in elementary school, we had show-and-tell days. I always wanted my gram’s dog Holly, who was a shih tzu, to come into school with me. Gram never said no.

I love when our friends always volunteer our home. It makes me feel good that they love coming over and making themselves at home. Typically, every year over the winter, my husband and I enjoy having different families over for dinner. This year we were super dedicated. This week will be our seventh weekend in a row hosting, and we still want to continue through March at least. We have picked a family every weekend to come over and join us for dinner. Friends we don’t get to see as often over the winter and have that one-on-one time with them. With our crew, we go out to eat every weekend together, but I never really get to cook for them often. So, having them each two or four at a time gave us a little more one-on-one with each other. I’ve been making easier things, so it is easier to clean and gives us more time for visiting. Some of my menus looked like this: – Stromboli & Salad – Ham & Cheese Spirals with Tortellini Salad – Pizza Roll Up Sliders with Fruit Salad – Lasagna, Cheesy Bread & Green Beans – Different BBQs with Crockpot Mac & Cheese Nothing too extreme, but everyone really enjoyed it! Even made homemade ice cream a few times too! It was just

She was always there for us anytime we needed her. I am sitting here giggling thinking about the one morning she picked me up with Holly and just decided to drive me to school and do Andrea show-and-tell early. McElroy We were backing out of our driveway on Roosevelt Ave., and my gram took out the neighbor’s mailbox with her car! She felt so bad. I remember that like it was yesterday! My gram was an incredible grandmother, and it breaks my heart we haven’t been able to hug her in almost a year. My momma is just like her momma. She loves to host! I remember when I was younger, Mom would have company over, and we would have her famous stromboli. Being a kid, I just got so anxious for company! Mom and Dad’s friends had kids, so we got to play. I always looked forward to the Hoyts coming over, the Merteses, Frys, and others. In fact, Lindsay Mertes was in my wedding and is still one of my very best friends. Growing up with these friends was a special time. I always wanted my kids to have that excitement of company too. Our house is pretty much the party house.

HOME COOKIN about getting friends together and helping these long winter days to go by faster. Giving someone something to look forward to. Those pizza sliders!? Oh, my goodness!! They were to die for! I made a nice salad to go with it, had chips, and fruit salad, and it was a perfect meal that everyone loved. Do you like to host? It doesn’t have to be hard. It’s about being together and doing something for others. Going above and beyond. I think people really look forward to someone cooking for them. Why wouldn’t we!? Shoot, even a hot dog roast sounds good to me! As long as I am with my family and friends, it doesn’t matter what you make. It’s the memories that go with it. I really think that’s what my gram thought about, and why she did so many things for others. Making people happy, made her happy. Pizza Roll-Up Sliders Ingredients: • 12 Hawaiian dinner rolls (don’t break apart) • 3/4 cup pizza sauce • 2-3 cups shredded mozzarella (how much do you like cheese?) • 8 ounces of pepperoni • 1/2 cup butter, melted • 3 Tbsp grated parmesan (extra for sprinkling)

• 1 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning • 1 tsp garlic powder • 1 tsp onion powder Directions: Preheat the oven to 350’. Spray an 11 by 8-inch pan with cooking spray. Use a bread knife to cut through the middle of the rolls. Separating the top from bottom. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the dish. Spread sauce on the bottom layer of buns. Then, sprinkle cheese over top. Top with pepperoni. I then sprinkled a little parm over the top before placing the lids on. In a small bowl combine melted butter, parm cheese, Italian seasoning, and both powders. Brush evenly over sliders. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1520 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

FORGIVENESS – GOD’S WAY TO FREEDOM

n our 50 years of Pastoring, I am still amazed by how practical and relevant the Bible proves to be, if we are willing to turn from our sel shness, our pride and e brace God’s gift of his son Jesus Christ. I believe we can experience days of heaven on earth. In Matthew chapter 18, the account of Jesus being asked by Peter, “How many times should we forgive our brother hen he o ended or sinned against us seven times?” Jesus replied, “Seven times seventy.” Jesus then spoke of the Kingdom of heaven being like a King who took an account of his servants. One servant owed the King a large debt. The King was then going to sell the servant, his wife, children, and all he had to pay the debt. The servant begged for mercy the King had compassion and forgave the servant the debt. That same servant later met a fellow servant who owed him a small

debt. The Bible says, the servant took the fellow servant by the throat and demanded the fellow servant pay all the debt. The fellow servant begged for mercy; but the servant would not forgive the debt but rather had the fellow servant thrown into prison. When the King found out what happened, the King called the servant whom he had forgiven the large debt and asked why he had not had compassion on his fellow servant. The King called him wicked and was angry. The King then turned him over to the tormentors and put him in prison until he had paid all his debt. Jesus then said, “So likewise shall my heavenly father do to you also if you from your heart do not forgive everyone his brother his trespasses.” According to Jesus, those unwilling to forgive are promised the tormentors, whatever that means it does not sound good. This should be a huge incentive for us to forgive others to avert judgement.

I am convinced if we could teach people to forgive many in mental hospitals would not be there. We also understand our physical health is a ected by our ental health as well. Let me mention some things; in the area of forgiveness that helped over the years in our Church. Forgiveness is a command from God therefore is attainable as well as our responsibility. We cannot change what people have done in the past; but we are responsible for our response today. Thinking people can just drift into forgiveness is an illusion. Jesus said, “We must strive to enter into; the straight gate.” Another translation reads, “strain every nerve and make every e ort This is not speaking of earning your way into heaven; but rather when we become a Christian, e ust put forth every e ort to enjoy what God has provided through our following Jesus and his teachings. If we do what we can God will

do what we cannot do. We have learned to get God to work with us; on our behalf, we make him part of the equation by stepping out in faith and obedience to His Word. Forgiveness is fundamentally a promise you make to yourself. a.) I will not use someone’s faults against them in the future. b.) I will not talk to others about the hurt or o ence c.) I will not dwell on the hurt or the o ence yself We need to remember this promise from God’s word in Isaiah 50:7 (TLB) which says, Because the Lord God helps me; I will not be dismayed, I have made up my mind to do things God’s way and I know God will help me be successful. Having a good marriage, raising good children, and a good life in general can be a struggle. Let us make sure the struggle is not of our own making. Let us forgive others, trust God and be free! ~ Pastor Wayne Holcomb

church has also become a museum. Every time our church experiences something special, I choose a memento and add it to the collection of memories that must be preserved. I use those keepsakes to retell the stories of a faithful congregation who stepped out and took risks to do big things for God. Even for the newer people at our church, those stories have become a part of their story. As the Israelites were entering the Promised Land after forty years of wandering and four hundred years of slavery, God directed them to set up a memorial of twelve stones. Why? To act as a trigger for storytelling for generations to come. To this day, the celebration of Passover, a memorial in the Jewish faith, imprints the story of the exodus into Jewish children and establishes it as a part of their story. As Jesus was preparing to suffer and die, he created a memorial we call the Lord’s Supper. He commanded them to eat of the bread and drink of the cup often. Why? So, they would tell the story of His passion again and again. Two thousand years later, we’re still telling the story, and His story has become our story. Hallelujah! My friend, your life is a precious tapestry, a unique weaving of story containing yarns of trauma and triumph, remorse and redemption. Your story has the ability to declare the faithfulness of God, but to do so, you must tell it in a way that reveals His sovereignty and majesty. What is coming out of your mouth today? terness? Are you constantly rehearsing the regrets and resentments of life? What is your bitter storytelling doing to you and others? Is it lifting them up and giving them hope? It is not. Bitter storytelling only deepens the ruts of life, leaving us mired down in grief. Ruts develop because of repetitive use. Is your life stuck in the ruts created by bitter storytelling? Are you reinforcing the wrong history? Life is tough and loss is inevitable, but there are other stories we can tell. For every story of loss, there is also a story of gain. It is for this reason Paul encourages us to give thanks in all circumstances. See 1 Thessalonians 5:18. In Philippians 4, he directs us to think about things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. Why? Because the things we think about will guide the stories we tell. If you dwell on the false, the dishonest, the unjust, the contaminated, the ugly, and the bad, your stories will reinforce the ruts of bitterness and negativity. Pandemic anxiety and political division are creating plenty of opportunities for reinforcing the evil stories of our day – and there are plenty of people telling those stories. Believer, you and I have the opportunity to tell the other stories; the redemptive stories of faith and hope and love. Our storytelling can awaken people to the sovereign majesty of our loving and gracious God. Storytelling has the power to do great good. Will you unlock that power today? Will you develop your skills as one of God’s master storytellers? What will come out of your mouth today? The choice is yours to make.

the mid-1990s, a more feminine expression of Streetwear emerged with color-blocked crop tops, longer braided hairstyles, and African-print inspired dresses and skirts. From the late 90s through the early 2000s, bling was the thing in Hip Hop Fashion and Streetwear. Whether platinum or gold, celebrities and lay-people alike wore jewelry often embedded with diamonds. Gold chains and hoop earrings become bigger and heavier and removable metal jeweled teeth coverings,

commonly known as grills, rose in popularity. With the emphasis on jewelry and designer labels, critics from both in and outside of the Hip Hop community began to rebuke the glorification of consumerism. In the 2010s and now in the 2020s, Hip Hop Fashion has become ubiquitous with mainstream culture, both here in the US and internationally, with foreign cities like Tokyo, Milan, Laos, and Seoul putting their own stamp on modern Hip Hop Streetwear. There’s also a trend toward unisex

clothing with pastel and floral printed windbreakers for both men and women and brightly colored neoprene jumpsuits. While brands as divergent as Champion to Chanel offer Hip Hop Fashion at every price point. Of course, no rundown of Hip Hop Fashion would be complete if I didn’t include the short-lived practice of wearing clothing backward as made popular by the juvenile rap group Kris Kross. Full disclosure, back in 1992, me and some of my friends totally wore denim overalls clasped in the back over backward-buttoned flannel shirts on more than one occasion to

the Lycoming Mall, and possibly once bowling. Why did we do this? Because we wanted to express ourselves by copying the look of musicians we were listening to and relating to. Selfexpression, experimentation, and not being afraid to be a bit goofy and have fun are all components of Hip Hop and Streetwear style. Yet, at the same time, Hip Hop Fashion is also very much about celebrating and elevating African American culture, recognizing that Black Americans are toeing the line between African ancestry and American realities through music, art, and fashion.

there are times when even that may seem impossible but when something’s done, when someone’s gone, or when the unthinkable has become reality, that’s what you have to do. Right foot, left foot, right foot, as in the new book “Keep Moving” by Maggie Smith. It’s over. You saw this coming, knew it was going to occur, though you thrashed and railed against it. Smith says that when the worst happened to her, she kept asking herself “What now?” and

Smith says we must take a lesson from lodgepole pinecones: they can’t grow into tall trees unless they first endure a fire. If you’ve gone through metaphorical fire, “You survived; don’t forget that, and don’t diminish it.” And in the third part, Transformation, recall what happens when you take your hand out of a bucket of water: “’The water takes back the handshaped space.’” You can do the same thing with your life: don’t live with what’s gone; instead, take back your narrative by thinking about the future. You don’t have to forget the past,

the answer was always “Keep moving.” Reminding herself then that the past can’t be undone, she grieved, and made lists of things she was already doing – breathing, eating, blinking – then crossed them off to trick herself into thinking she was accomplishing something. She stopped claiming heartbreak because, despite occasional feelings to the contrary, her heart was beating just fine. In the first part of Smith’s book, Revision reminds us that change offers “an opportunity to make a new... life.” In the second part, Resilience,

but reframe it and “let go of the idea that you could have done anything differently.” Be like a caterpillar, Smith says: cocoon, and then believe that you have entered darkness and are “coming out with wings.” Take a quick scan of “Keep Moving,” and you’ll notice that it’s full of memeworthy half-pages that might seem.... fluffy. There’s not much inside this book at all, unless you need everything that you see. And if that’s the case, then this book is golden. Poet and author Maggie Smith’s words ooze with compassion and self-care in a blend of short-short essays and one-to-three-line tiny posters that seem to invite readers to jot down down the sentiments and stick them on the bathroom mirror each day. Smith tells of her personal loss – a divorce – and how she survived, in what seems less like a book of steps and more like a three-season method that makes no demands on time. While it’s aimed, for the most part, at loss of love and marriage here, the words can easily be subsumed by readers suffering other losses and missings. Not everyone will want to read this book, and not everyone should, but if

Last year’s Farm Country Eagle Cam, which provides a bird’s-eye view into a long-established nest in a giant sycamore overlooking scenic farmland, is back. The ever-popular Hanover, Pa. Eagle Cam has returned to the Game Commission after a year of being sponsored by Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. And the agency’s Snow Goose Cam got up and running at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area in January, ahead of snow-goose migration through Pennsylvania, and the action is picking up.

arsh winter weather can make it tough to get outdoors. But even in the worst conditions, the Game Commission’s round-the-clock livestreams offer viewers a chance to connect with wildlife, all from the comfort of home. A new 24-7 livestream from a black bear den in Monroe County launched this week. That brings the total to four Game Commission livestreams planned to run into the spring of 2021.

favorite cams to watch.” The den featured in the black bear livestream is the same one from the Game Commission’s last black bear livestream two years ago, and the adult bear hibernating there could be the same one. Female black bears typically breed and have cubs every two years. Based on sounds picked up in the den, it’s believed the adult bear in the livestream is with at least one cub. Pennsylvania’s black bears usually are born in January and begin walking in about eight weeks. They leave the den when 3 months old. During the 2019 run of the black bear livestream, the bears left the den, which is beneath a deck at a cabin, on April 11.

Game Commission Information and Education Director Steve Smith said the agency’s livestreams allow viewers to see wildlife behavior unfold in front of them, at closer proximity than usually is possible in the wild. “Viewers often tell us how appreciative they are for the entertaining, educational opportunities the livestreams provide, but also for how the livestreams have given them a whole new appreciation of wildlife,” Smith said. “Those are among many reasons the Game Commission’s wildlife livestreams remain so popular, and why we’re proud to bring them back again this year.” This is the seventh year for the 24-7 livestream at the Hanover nest, located

at Codorus State Park. The first egg of the year was spotted at the Hanover nest this week. HDOnTap Co-Founder Tiffany Sears said the livestream is one of the company’s most popular. “Since 2015, viewers have enjoyed over 40 million hours of 24-7, live HD video and audio from the nest, as well as daily time-lapse clips on screens worldwide.” Bald eagles typically lay eggs in midFebruary and, if the eggs are viable, they’ll hatch in mid- to late March, with young fledging in June, but continuing to stop back at the nest. Snow goose migration typically peaks at Middle Creek from mid-February to March.

woman’s body goes through many changes during pregnancy. Many of them are obvious like the belly bump, but some are more subtle or hidden like how pregnancy affects the heart and blood vessels. Due to these changes, some women may develop a new heart condition during pregnancy, or an existing cardiac condition can worsen. So, when you’re preg-

nant, it’s important to know what to expect. Typical Heart Changes Your body undergoes many changes in a typical pregnancy as it prepares to create space and promote healthy growth of your child. Healthy changes of the heart and blood vessels, include: – A 40 – 50% increase in blood volume – The extra blood volume makes the heart work 30 to 40% harder – Heart rate increases 10 to 15 beats per minute

– Blood pressure decreases These changes usually normalize when the baby is born. By three months postpartum, your cardiovascular system generally has snapped back to pre-pregnancy status. Added Risks of Pregnancy Pregnancy is a risk factor for the development of blood clots especially deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Pregnancy and delivery are independent risk factors for spontaneous tears in the aorta, however the presence of other conditions such as connective tissue diseases can compound the risk. Additional pregnancy-induced complications include high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, cardiomyopathy, heart failure, gestational diabetes, heart

murmurs, and worsening valve problems. Peripartum cardiomyopathy, or PCM, is rare but can be a life-threatening heart condition which may develop either late in pregnancy or after delivery. It can be difficult to diagnose because the symptoms are similar to a normal pregnancy and include shortness of breath and swelling in the legs and feet. Some conditions — like pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes — resolve after childbirth. However, these conditions place women at an increased risk of heart disease in the future. Take a Heart Healthy Approach from the Start During pregnancy, if you have a pre-existing heart condition you may be at in-

creased risk for complications. It is important to monitor and treat any existing issues with your heart as well as seek care if new conditions arise. In addition, regular prenatal exams can sometimes uncover a previously undiagnosed heart issue. It is important to find a cardiac specialist you trust who will work with your OB-GYN before, during, and after your pregnancy to ensure the safety of you and your baby. Women with an underlying or known cardiac condition need to take special precautions before and during pregnancy. If new symptoms surface during pregnancy, your doctor needs to know. Gazette and Bulletin February 8, 1943 Negro History Week Opens With Church Meeting

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he opening ceremonies of a week-long Negro History Week observance, which is conducted nationwide, were held yesterday afternoon before a large congregation at the Shiloh Baptist Church.

Jesse O’ Thomas, a negro staff assistant in the war savings department of the U.S. Treasury in Washington, was the featured speaker of the program that included Mayor Leo C. Williamson, Charles F. Askey, director of the City Council of Defense, and E. S. Frymire, county salvage chairman.

Under the supervision of the Junior Council for the Bethune-Douglas Center, the first program in observance of Negro History Week was centered on reports of scrap and war savings stamp and bond drives conducted by the Negroes of the city. Reports of Negro-conducted stamp and bond drives as well as scrap drives during the first month of the year were presented to Mr. Askey and Salvage Chairman Frymire by ten-year-old Anna Mary Todd. According to reports Williamsport Negros purchased almost $600 worth of War Bonds in January. Negro history as an aid to the growth of the country was vividly described by

the featured speaker, Mr. O’Thomas. Mayor Williamson delivered the welcoming speech to Mr. O’Thomas on behalf of the colored and white citizens of The Friendly City of Williamsport: Toastmaster of the initial ceremony was Ross Lee Hewitt, Jr. of Boy Scout Troop 19. Musical entertainment at the ceremony was provided by the Four Keys and the musical ensemble of the center. Devotions were under the direction of Harry Jones and Ernestine Potts and in accordance with Boy Scout Week, ushers were Melvin Whaley and Tommy Brewer of Troop 19.

he Outdoor Industry Association and the Outdoor Foundation are national organizations that conduct research into the depth and effect of American’s participation in outdoor recreation. Each year, the Outdoor Foundation produces the Outdoor Participation Report – the largest, most comprehensive research report on outdoor recreation participation. Along with the overall report, research details individual outdoor activities, such as camping, hiking, biking, birding and fishing. Having reviewed the 2020 Outdoor Participation Report, published on December 31, 2020, it appears that the outdoors has once again shown to be a place where Americans across the country are “seeking respite and solace from pandemic restrictions” and the related pressures. It can be said that we are not living in the worst of times, but it can also be said

that we are not living in the best of times, either. It is difficult to enjoy now when we are focused on worrying about later. But, the overall report reflects hope. Findings say that: - Camping grew in participation last year by 28%, with 7.9 million participants in 2020. - 8.1 million more Americans hiked in 2020 than in 2019 - 16.3% increase. - Freshwater fishing also saw gains, rising 8.6%, adding 3.4 million anglers. In all, more than half of all Americans took part in outdoor activities in 2020. Based on the outdoor activities in Northcentral Pennsylvania, it would be easy to conclude that such outdoor participation was even higher in our area. Folks here can so easily step outside, engage in so many varied forms of outdoor ventures and rediscover the simple things and that the outdoors appears to be the best medicine imaginable. column. We are so fortunate here in Lycoming and surrounding counties to have so much open areas to recreate in – thousands of acres are open to everyone within state parks and state forests, miles of trails are available for hiking and biking and open waters for fishing – from the big water of the Susquehanna river to small mountain streams and beaver ponds for trout are all accessible nearby. This time of year hunters who are pursuing coyotes should have good success. The deep snows and resultant layers of ice have greatly reduced food sources for all wildlife, including the wily coyotes. They should be much more receptive to calling when they are having difficulty finding their next meal! No matter what your preferences for outside activities may be, if you live in or visit the streams and hills of the Northern tier, you’ll be blessed with fresh air, a lifting of your spirits and an enriched attitude at the end of the day! Take time to step outside and discover the “rays of hope” that await us all.

after all, a good thing for everyone. Hiking, biking, kayaking, camping, birding, and hunting and fishing – or simply being outside in the sun and fresh air is much better for you than sitting around worrying about things we have no control over. The weather forecasts for our neck of the woods show a slight increasing trend in temperatures and a slightly diminishing trend of snow activity. That is great news for those who have been waiting to spend time outside, but have been held back by the bone-chilling temperatures. While snowshoeing, skiing, and cross-country skiing will still be available for awhile, soon the nearby trails will become open to hiking without concern for deep snow or icy conditions. During this transition period or snow cover to bare ground, many can venture forth in search of shed antlers (I have been receiving reports of an increasing number of bucks on trail cameras that have shed one or both antlers). Finding shed antlers can be a very rewarding activity and one we can explore in an upcoming

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

How About a February Squirrel Hunt?

I

’ll be honest, I don’t do much squirrel hunting these days, but when I began hunting as a teenager, squirrel hunting was high on my list of priorities. Many other hunting and fishing opportunities slowly crowded out my squirrel hunting over the years, but I still have fond memories of those early days. For those who may not be interested in joining the ice fishing crowd, a rabbit hunt or maybe even a squirrel hunt would be just the ticket for some late winter hunting excitement and some much-needed physical exercise. Of course, you may have already gotten plenty of that physical exercise shoveling the driveway but shoveling the driveway isn’t as exhilarating as

hunting. It’s pretty obvious that if you do plan to do some late season squirrel hunting this year, you will have to factor in some serious snow covering. Trudging through the Ken squirrel woods this winter Hunter will certainly provide some exercise, and if you are fortunate enough to own a pair of snowshoes, you may want to don those as well. Actually, I kind of like a good hike in the woods after a heavy snowfall, and a squirrel hunt can combine a hunt with a snowshoe jaunt as well. If you’ve done some squirrel hunting in the past, especially in the fall season, you’ve probably tried to zero in on the morning and late afternoon hunts; squirrels are particularly active at those times in the fall but not

into hunting squirrels with a rifle, and that is still my preference today. Any number of 22 rifles are fine choices-lever action, bolt action, or even single shot as long as they are pretty accurate. Without a doubt, a scope will greatly improve your chances of taking game, especially when your target is as small as a squirrel. Add to the fact that your target is small that you very likely will be taking some fairly long shots, and in this kind of hunting, 50 yards is a long shot. Grant it, you don’t get the same thrill hunting winter squirrels as you would taking aim at a large, racked buck, but it’s still fun, and it gets you outdoors in a hunting scenario. I might add that a late winter squirrel hunt would also be a good outing for a youngster just getting into hunting; the chances for success are pretty likely, and the outdoor winter experience is well worth it.

53 • Webb Weekly February 17, 2021

so much in late winter. By this time of year and with the heavy snow cover, you are probably better off hunting the “warmer” mid-day hours instead. Naturally, you want to concentrate your efforts in wooded areas that offer a variety of nuts like walnuts, beechnuts, hickory nuts, and acorns. In the warmer early fall days, I know that sitting for long periods of time and waiting for the squirrels to make a move is a typical approach, but I suspect this colder period moves will be more frequent. The “still hunt” approach may be better-move slowly and deliberately and stop frequently. When I first got into squirrel hunting, I used a shotgun-mainly because it was the only gun available to me. It was a single barrel 16 gage H&R, but it brought home the bacon or squirrel, I should say. As time went on, I got

history with his seventh Super Bowl triumph and fifth big game MVP performance in Tampa Bay’s 31-9 dismantling of Kansas City in Super Bowl LV. McNutt graduated from South Williamsport High School in 1986 and later Central Pennsylvania Business College. She later got married, worked in Delaware for many years, and moved to Florida six years ago, where she is employed as a secretary in the emergency room at Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. As part of the NFL’s program to recognize vaccinated health care works at the Super Bowl, Children’s Hospital’s emergency department workers were among the first to receive the COVID vaccine. Those workers who had received both doses of the vaccine before January 24 were eligible to enter a drawing to win tickets to the Super Bowl. The hospital received 50 tickets, and 114 employees entered the drawing. When it was held, McNutt’s name was the first one picked. The day following the Super Bowl, Sue

was kind enough to share some of those game-day experiences with Webb Weekly. “Along with our tickets, we received a parking pass that was about a half-mile from the stadium. We began the walk to the stadium at about 1:30 p.m., and it was 3:30 p.m. until we finally got in. There is mandatory masking in Tampa/ St. Petersburg and stringent health Scott safety precautions were present Lowery entering the stadium. Once inside, we were directed to a private area for the 7,500 health care workers attending the game. There we were provided free food and beverages and were guests at the Miley Cyrus concert. It was really enjoyable. The weather was in the 70s, and we could roam around the concert area, which lasted until 4:45 p.m. “Following the concert, we had time to see many of the displays located around the stadium. Unlike a normal Super Bowl, it wasn’t that crowded, people were respecting the social distancing, and you had opportunities to take plenty of pictures. There was no tailgating, but it was a relaxed atmosphere, and people were very friendly and excited. “We got to our seats about 5:00 p.m. and watched the teams’ pre-game warm-ups. We had good seats. I was on the second deck club level on cushioned seats at about the five-yard line. You were high enough to

Sue McNutt and co-w orker enj oy Sup er B ow l f estiv ities. for the 7,500 health care workers that were there. “It was really cool to have the Super Bowl here and to have the Bucs win here. That is something that has never happened before. It was a united feeling experience. Everybody got along. It was nice for once that with everything that is going on in the country, people enjoyed an event, got along, and weren’t angry.” Although not a Tom Brady fan previous to his joining the Buccaneers, McNutt admitted Tampa is definitely Brady country. “Tom Brady is everywhere down here. He is on billboards, signs, on TV, and radio. Brady jerseys are much easier to find than just a Bucs jersey. The man just doesn’t lose. The Bucs brought him here to win, and he delivered. He did what he said he was going to do, and you have to have total respect for his talents.” Along with 16 other incorrect prognosticators in last week’s Webb Weekly, I should have recognized the obvious.

have a great view of the field. I had another person sitting next to me but on the seat on my other side was a cutout of a dog. People were spread out. Nobody was sitting in front or behind you. You were required to wear masks in your seats. You could take them off to eat or drink, but there were ushers constantly walking around making sure people were wearing masks. “The health care workers were introduced to the crowd, and folks were appreciative. I’ve never been to a place where nobody complained or weren’t whining about something. Outside the stadium, there were some vaccine protestors, but nobody got in your face, and the day was just a whole lot of fun.” Asked about The Weeknd’s halftime show performance, McNutt’s reaction was positive. “The halftime show was actually really good. It was down in the end zone where we were seated, so we were up close. I couldn’t really see much of the groups dancing on the field, but the music was good, and there were lots of fireworks. I had never heard of the performer before, but folks seemed to like it. “The postgame celebration was rather subdued. It was on the field right in front of me, but it was a little boring. I did get a good view of Tom Brady with the trophy and his kids. “It was so much fun. We had a great time. We were excited for the opportunity because I would never be able to do anything like that. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and everything was free, and we were handed stuff left and right. We were treated so nice, and it was really like a private party

Tomatoes

W

hen most people think of a vegetable plant, they think of tomatoes right away. Over the years, I have planted various vegetables and fruits, but my personal favorite is the tomato. The tomato can be one of the easiest plants to have with a little work and the right amount of space. There are two types of tomato plants, indeterminate and determinate. Determinate means the tomato plant will grow to one height, then stop and begin pushing tomato blossoms to produce tomatoes. Determinate tomato plants typically will not produce a lot of tomatoes because of the restricted size. Indeterminate tomato plants will keep growing until the first heavy frost. I grow indeterminate tomato plants to over 10’ tall. The indeterminate tomato plants can produce lots of tomatoes all season

long. One of my favorite things about indeterminate tomato plants is that the tomatoes do not all ripen at the same time. If you have ever driven past a farm that grows tomatoes, more than likely, these are indeterminate plants. Most farmers who grow tomatoes in bulk do not stake them, so they do not lie on the ground. I will talk about how to stake tomato plants for another day. What is the best tomato plant to grow? That is totally your choice. The produce section of the store will usually stock Beefsteak and Cherry Tomatoes. These two types of tomatoes are often referred to as conventional tomatoes. If you look on my Instagram page, you will see the two plants are Better Boy and Grape Tomatoes. I chose these two for their size and flavor. I have grown Roma tomatoes before, but these tomatoes are mostly for canning and making

tomato paste. Roma tomatoes would be considered indeterminate plants. Better Bush, Biltmore, and Celebrity Tomato plants would considered Charlie be Gizenski Determinate. These types of plants do very well in garden pots or even between flower beds since they are more of a bush style plant. I have grown these as well, but they yield a smaller amount since the plant is not very big. These would be a perfect fit for someone who lives in an apartment with a small deck or porch. I recommend you get plants that have been started at different times. This way, when you are harvesting tomatoes off one plant, you have another plant with tomatoes that are still ripening. This year I decided to try something new. I will be planting Heirloom tomatoes in my garden. Heirlooms are non-

hybrid tomatoes, meaning they have not been genetically altered to grow a certain size, shape, or color. Hybrids may have also been cross-pollinated to be disease free as well. The heirloom type of tomato seed has been in the U.S. for at least 50 years. Heirloom Tomatoes were first brought to Europe in the 1500s from South America. These tomatoes have a shorter shelf life and are less disease resistant than hybrids. I was given some Cherokee Purple seeds this past fall and asked to try my hand at growing them. If you look them up on the internet, you will see that they are not a very flashy tomato, meaning they will have some brown spots and will be different colors. They may not be the prettiest tomato, but they taste amazing! They have a smoke fire undertone with a sweet taste. I love trying to grow new types of fruits and vegetables each year. Please follow along and see what challenges I may have with the Cherokee purple tomato.
