Appreciation for the Harbingers and Happenings of Autumn

O

ur Fall Home Improvement Guide can mean only one thing — the unofficial start of Autumn has arrived. Since we began the Webb Weekly, this is always one of our biggest publications of the year, and our 2021 edition is no different. Within the Fall HI pull-out, there are 114 businesses available to help you with everything from building that new home to those repairs on the honey-do list you’ve never gotten to. Please do yourself a favor and hire somebody and get it done. It will make your life at home so much happier. And I’ve got a guy for you. My staff and I take great pride in our relationship with the West Branch Builders Association and all those that make a living with their hands and/or provide products to make your home a better place. They are part of our area’s small business community that is ever so important in providing jobs and strengthening our local economy. The names and businesses within our publication are ones you can trust. When I need something done, especially when it comes to keeping my wife off my back, the folks working at my house come right off the list provided. Which leads me right into my next

point, almost every business inside our Fall Home Improvement needs workers. The world needs carpenters, plumbers, electricians, heavy equipment operators, welders — you name it. All those good people that pack up the lunch pail and go to work every day. Our Country is facing a serious shortage of these people, who, when you think about it, actually build our Country from the ground up. We need to encourage young people that there are great livings to be made through the hard work of learning a trade. It is a fast-track opportunity for learning and then applying your skill to a personal business ownership opportunity. We must understand that traditional college and white-collar jobs are not for everybody; our Nation needs to move away from that thinking. There is a job, great earning potential, and purpose for everyone that wants to work, especially those that want to get dirty. Another sign that fall is in the air is the amazing job the ladies at Tebbs have done in decorating for the season. It’s a celebration of the harvest season as all those brilliant fall colors come together. And of course, it’s a great place for me to stop and pick up some great healthier food choices, maybe a jug of apple cider and

whatever looks good that day. I will wait to get the mums and pumpkins until a little later in the season. There is so much going on in our area; get out and about out as a family and take it all in. As our cover shows, Muncy is being Jim Webb, Jr. taken over this weekend for the love of Motorheads. Three amazing car shows within minutes of each other. In downtown Muncy, Blaise Alexander’s Family Dealerships present the Susquehanna Valley Corvette Club. Just on the edge of town Murray Motors and the Peace brothers are hosting the North Central Mustang Club, and right next door, the Kaiser Boys and the Fairfield Auto Group feature Mopar Muscle of Central Pennsylvania. So, no matter what manufacturer you lean towards, it’s all covered. Along with great food, giveaways, and support of the local community. There is something for everyone in the pages ahead. Clear your mind of every negativity as seen on TV and get out and enjoy! One event that I encourage folks to attend is the Rocking the Monument concert at the Community Arts Center Saturday evening; the full story can be found on page 18. The concert proceeds will benefit The Central Pennsylvania Gold Star Families Memorial Monument at Lycoming County Veterans Memorial

Park. This is a tribute to the families and relatives who have lost a loved one while serving our Nation and providing our very Freedom. It is amazing how people’s paths cross during their life’s journey in our little neck of Penns Woods. After reading the story, you’ll understand the following comments a little better. Bart Howard and I both grew up on Kane Street in Southside, which is now where my office resides. After not seeing him for decades, he walked back into my life with the Rocking the Monument event. Bart’s and my friendship picked up right where it left off years ago. It is my honor and privilege to promote this event for him. Thank you, Bart, for your continued service to our Nation and community. I have been wanting to write about the debacle that is Afghanistan; however, I did not want my emotions to turn the column into a rant of rage. I prayed this past week on this issue for personal peace and guidance in finding just the right words to write this column. Before I took the time to put pen to paper, the following showed up on my desk from Scott Lowery. Mr. Lowery is a longtime friend of the family and longtime member of the Weekly family. This is a must-read for everyone in our United States of America. I thank Scott for his perspective and outstanding journalism. Please read “Who’s in Charge?” on Page 10. God Bless America.

y the time you read this, the 20th anniversary of September 11th will be behind us. But before we put another year in the rearview (and especially since as I’m writing it’s September 10th), I wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped make the first 9/11 Heroes Challenge a success! Steve and I worked hard to put on the best event possible. I first want to thank Jimmy not only for his extremely generous donation of $20 for each participant, but also getting us pointed in the right direction to make this happen. That leads me to my next thank you to Gerald McLaughlin, Superintendent of Loyalsock High School. Jerry went above and beyond to not only provide us a venue, but to help us get everything organized! amazing help, and we are thankful! I also want to thank everyone who donated. Kriger Fence, Steph Valley Sports & Nordstrom Classics and WeldFab — who helped pay for t-shirts and everyone else who donated their time or money to the cause! And last, but certainly not least, thank you to everyone who came out and took the Challenge. We appreciate all of you and congratulations on getting it done! None of this would be possible without y’all, so thank you for taking your time, energy and effort in the name of those who lost their lives. We raised almost $3,000 for the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund. Families of Freedom is an amazing organization that

provides scholarship money to the children of first responder who lost their lives on September 11th. This week brings you our Fall Home Improvement issue! This is always an amazing edition of Webb Weekly! We have over 100 businesses in that section alone to help you out with whatever project you still have on your summer/fall to-do list, or to help you plan for next spring. I’m super proud of the Webb Weekly staff this week as we put out a whopping 104 pages of Webb Weekly in just four days due to Labor Day! Nice job y’all! I can’t believe that it is almost fall already! I swear the older I get, the faster that time passes. I suppose next week, I’ll have to give you my annual Fall-Bucket-List-ThatI-Probably-Won’t-Accomplish. I need to start researching that to see if there is anything new and exciting that I really want to do, but probably won’t.

registration fee is $15.00 per car, and the first 100 cars will receive a free gift. Everyone will have the chance to win a door prize. Brent Peace, General Manager of Murray Motors added, “For almost 10 years Murray Motors Ford has been pleased to be involved with this Ford show. We have plenty of food vendors and a DJ it is a really enjoyable day for spectators and those to show their amazing cars and trucks. Coming into fall we always look forward to this ford show. Thank you for all those participating.” Proceeds from this year’s show will be donated to the American Cancer Society and Geisinger Pulmonary Medicine on behalf of NCMC members who have passed. There will also be a DJ all day with door prizes in the afternoon. The NCMC is dedicated to the preservation of the Ford Mustang — America’s first and premier “pony car.” The NCMC has been in existence since 1987 and became a charter member of the Mustang Club of America (MCA) on March 14, 1989. At that time, they were formally granted a charter by the MCA for a territory that encompasses the North Central region of Pennsylva-

Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Susquehanna Valley Corvette Club Scholarship Foundation that assists Pennsylvania College of Technology students in the automotive restoration majors. Car show registration is 9 a.m.-11 a.m., with a registration fee of $20 per car. To ensure that young people carry on their tradition and love of automobiles, the SVCC established the SVCC Scholarship for Auto Restoration with Pennsylvania College of Technology. Since the foundation began, over $100,000 has been donated to PCT students in the form of scholarships. Scholarships are awarded to first-year students who reside in Bradford, Clinton, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga, or Union counties. “The scholarship fund was created benefiting the automotive programs at the Pennsylvania College of Technology because we felt there was no better way to keep the passion and one’s love for cars alive than to support the young adults of today that have a genuine interest in the automotive field,” said Al Clapps, SVCC member. Clapps went on to say that the car show would not be possible without the hard work of all

nia, a 50-mile radius around Williamsport, PA. The NCMC is an organization of members from all walks of life who have bonded together because of their love of Fords and Mustangs. Group members are interested in Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, early models, late models, specialty cars, originals, restorations, resto-mods, and street machines. All Ford-powered vehicles are eligible, and anyone who loves cars and trucks can join the club. The NCMC participates in many activities such as their annual car show and frequent cruises to regional destinations, car displays, trips to the local drag strip, parades, and picnics. They have also traveled together to many car shows and related activities, including the 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th, and 50th Anniversary Mustang shows, the assembly plant in Dearborn, Michigan, MCA Nationals, and Carlisle All-Ford Nationals.

adly, in today’s world, the word ‘bubble’ has taken on a totally different meaning than that used to describe a luxurious bath or a child’s gum. It’s now a protective word meant to shield one from interactions and danger from the outside world. During last month’s Little League Baseball World Series, the ‘bubble’ that surrounded me was self-inflicted from the standpoint that while engaged in the radio broadcast duties of Series games, I had little time for anything else. Show up at 9:00 a.m., get home at 9:00 p.m., grab a bite, and hit the sack — the next day repeat. No complaints, I loved it but was mostly unaware of things going on outside my assigned duties. On Thursday, August 26, I got home early and flicked on the TV to check the news. That’s when I learned of the terrorist attack at the Kabul airport that left 13 American servicemen and women dead, along with scores of Afghanis either killed or wounded. The news sickened me, and anger arose from within. This had nothing to do with one’s political views; rather, the lack of commitment, honor, human dignity, and governmental failure to just do the right thing. Too big a price had already been paid for twenty years in Afghanistan, but the manner in which the United States of America pulled the plug was disgraceful. Our son, Doug, is a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and has served two

one-year tours in Afghanistan. He has told me stories of the atrocities inflicted by the Taliban before our country’s intervention and how improvements to the daily lives of Afghanis were being achieved. It can certainly be argued that attempting to pioneer changes to a culture hundreds of years old was a losing battle, as attested to by the conflicts in Afghanistan’s history. It has been the prevailing opinion of most Americans it was time to bring our troops home. But like everything else, there is a right and wrong way to achieve the desired result. It is overly simplistic, but as a fan of country music, the messages contained in the lyrics of many country songs attest to the lives we lead. Such George Jones tunes “Choices” and “Two Story House” hauntingly describe things gone wrong in individual’s lives. Still filled with the disgust brought about by that August 26 news, I left home to run an errand. Ironically, the song playing on the car radio was an old Willie Nelson tune entitled The Last Cowboy Song. The song’s words lamented the ending of the cowboy era in America when that way of life was disappearing from the American scene. If you’ve never heard the song, two lines of its verse were ringing home to me. This is the last cowboy song, the end of a hundred-year waltz Voices sound sad as they’re singing along, another piece of America’s lost The parallel to Nelson’s song is that far too quickly, we are losing great chunks of what

America had grown to be and the esteem to which this nation had been viewed by freedom-loving nations across the globe. America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, could be counted upon to live by its word and was a shining example of what people inspired to be. In an 1838 speech, President Abraham Lincoln told the assembled crowd, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we lose our freedoms, it will be because we have destroyed ourselves from within.” I wonder what Honest Abe would be saying about the state of affairs today? Lincoln is remembered as the man who saved the Union from destruction emanating from the Civil War. President Franklin D. Roosevelt led the nation, and the free world, through the dark days of WWII; President Ronald Regan stood up to the Russians and tore down the Berlin Wall. Sadly, during the last three decades, those who have ascended to our nation’s highest office have included a womanizer, an American apologist, and an ego-eccentric. Today, the holder of that office is an embarrassment. In 1970, another country song written by Bill Anderson asked the question, Where have all our heroes gone? Perhaps that is the greatest dilemma America faces today. Where have they gone? It is a tragedy that in this country, the greatest nation that has ever existed, that the democratic system cannot identify a truly inspiring, qualified individual to lead us. I would venture a guess that in the last presidential election, a

O P E N

huge amount of the electorate cast their ballot against an individual rather than for the candidate they ultimately voted for. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to seek out a presidential president instead of bellyaching about rigged elections? We haven’t had one of those in a while. But think about it. Why would anyone who has achieved success through their own hard work and perseverance want to run for president? Not the way we choose candidates today. How many of us have had something in our backgrounds that we are not proud of, or were youthful discretions? I don’t see too many hands raised disputing the same. Running for president today or any other high-ranking office of leadership is like running a public relations gauntlet. The opposition spends huge sums of money and energy trying to dig up as much dirt as they can to smudge reputations. Why then would someone want to put themselves through that? One obvious answer is power. But the founding fathers set forth the principle that the government should serve the people, not the other way around. It is becoming increasingly evident that the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is president by title only. If not, why would he make the statement during a press conference, “The first person I was instructed to call on was Kelly O’Donnell from NBC.” Instructed to call on? Who is pulling the president’s strings? That is a question that needs to be answered before President Lincoln’s prophetic words of 1838 become America’s epitaph.

rom the United States Congress to local municipalities, official meeting sessions are generally opened with a prayer. Often these are more directed toward the audience hearing them than Almighty God. Still, at the Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting on September 7th, Commissioner Chairman Scott Metzger opened the session with a prayer that spoke volumes. It deserves to be heard again: “Dear Gracious and Loving God, we thank you for another day that you have granted us the gift of life. We pray that we will use it for your glory and magnify you. We think of Labor Day yesterday and pay tribute to the hardworking men and women that have built this great country. COUNTY HALL and daughters leaving messages in those final seconds saying, ‘Tell them I love them’ and ‘I will see you someday.’ “On that day, we did not focus on a person’s nationality, color, wealth, sex, or religion. We focused on humanity, love, and people in need. We will never forget the ones that ran into those buildings to assist others in escaping. The true heart of a nation and humanity was revealed in its open hearts. “We lost 3,000 civilians, 343 firefighters, 60 police officers, and eight EMTs. We have lost countless more since that day to the repercussions of those terrorist attacks. “Father, we thank you that evil did not prevail, and we stood as a nation. However, Lord, we stand here 20 years later, a nation so divided in conflict and strife. We mourn the servicemen and women that were recently killed. We hear and see the horror that is going on in Afghanistan that we fought

against. The same evil and hatred that consumed those 19 men that flew the planes into those buildings is now in so many in our country. That same hate that came from a faraway land on the other side of the globe is now manifesting itself from within this great country. Lord, do not allow our land to be torn apart with the same hatred that attacked us 20 years ago. “We are Americans under one God. You have richly blessed our great land for nearly two and a half centuries. May we look to you to heal us in unity and love. “Protect our land from any further attacks. Most of all, let us heal and unite in love as Americans. Do not let us self-destruct from the same hate that caused such loss and heartbreak 20 years ago. “Now, Lord, we pray for your guidance today and throughout the days to come. These things we humbly pray in Jesus’s name, Amen.” And may all God’s people say, Amen!

or many military families, the drumbeat of war and deployments of loved ones to war zones over the last twenty years heightened their senses of things once mundane — the honks, horns, waving flags — as long last looks and tight embraces at departure gave way to a throbbing beat inside their chest as the countdown of days for homecoming began. The beat grew louder, sharper with every report of an improved explosive device (IED) blast, or a remote outpost in the dusty hills of Afghanistan under siege, or a ‘green-on-blue’ insider attack on base. While many loved ones returned home, some never did. As Korean War veteran and purple heart recipient Howard William Osterkamp once poignantly shared, “All gave some; some gave all.” Abe Howard, a native of Williamsport, gave all. A Family of Marines & Musicians Abram LaRue Howard hailed from a family of Marines and musicians. One of three children to Bart and Connie Howard, Abe was surrounded by the lore and lure of service and song. “He was a typical boy — very active,” Connie shares with a laugh. “He was a

good kid, kind and caring. He and brother Alex played a lot with Legos and toys, played outside, and liked to hunt. They also loved playing music. Abram played violin, and when he went to high school, he started playing stand-up bass, acoustic and electric guitar, as well as mandolin.” Alex played the cello, and their sister, Olivia, played the violin. Every Thursday and Friday night, the family would get together for a ‘music fest’ to play music and share stories, Connie recalls. “Conversations at our dinner table were about Marines. And music.” “Music is as much a part of our family lineage as the Marine Corp,” shares Bart. “My uncle was a musician who played guitar. My father taught himself how to play, and in turn, taught me and my mother. I’ve always considered playing music with my family a blessing — I mean, really, it’s a beautiful gift — and one I’ve been able to share with my children, too.” Enlisting in the United States Marine Corps while he was still in high school, Abe followed in the footsteps of his father, who served as a Marine in the eighties, his paternal grandfather who served in Korea, his great uncle who

“We were at Smokey Joe’s for wing night. Bart and Alex were leaving to go play music at our house. I was outside talking to friends, and my phone kept ringing. It was my daughter, Olivia. She said, ‘Mom, I don’t know what’s going on, but there are Marines here. You need to get home.’” Connie pauses. “And that’s when I knew it wasn’t good.” When Everything Fades The Howards became a Gold Star Family on July 27th, 2010. It’s not a membership any family wants. Bill Keiser, longtime family friend, funeral director, and owner of Sanders Mortuary, coordinated Abe’s homecoming escort and services, and designed the stone marking his final resting place. Over 6,000 people attended Abe’s military funeral honors and committal service held at Williamsport Area High School auditorium. Local filmmaker Carlos Saldivia captured the procession live and streamed it over the internet so Abe’s friends and fellow Marines in Afghanistan could bear witness remotely. “The way this community and the Marine Corps came together to honor my son was truly astounding,” says Bart. As he reflects on his son’s sacrifice, Bart shares, “I know in my mind, he truly was an asset to our community. A citizen raised up to be a veteran — to walk into a recruiter’s office in a time of conflict is an act of bravery. To go into harm’s way

died fighting in the Battle of Okinawa in WWII, and his maternal grandfather, becoming the twelfth Marine to serve in their combined families. In Color Abe chose to serve as an MP (military police) after boot camp. He planned to come home for ‘Family Day’ to see his family and sign pre-combat documentation before leaving for Camp LeJeune with his reservist unit. Bart greeted his son at the airport. On the way home, ‘In Color,’ a song by country artist Jamey Johnson, played on the radio and immediately captivated Abe. “Dad, we need to learn this song,” Abe told his father. “Play it again.” Bart recalls they must have played the song ten more times. The lyrics haunted both Marines. And if it looks like we were scared to death Like a couple of kids just tryna save each other You should’ve seen it in color Yeah, a picture’s worth a thousand words But you can’t see what those shades of gray keep covered You should’ve seen it in color Abe’s unit deployed to Afghanistan on Super Bowl Sunday in 2010 for a sixmonth tour. Just days before coming home, Connie spoke with Abe on the phone — they arranged his welcome home dinner (pies from Park Pizza) and his need for new clothes because of his weight loss.

MONUMENT and leave every facet of security you ever knew— to do that — that is service to your country.” Since Abe’s passing, Bart and Connie have looked for ways to give back to the community that helped raise and bury their son. They became involved with the Central PA Chapter of Gold Star Families and have recently created and chaired the Lycoming County Gold Star Family Memorial Fund to design a Gold Star Family Memorial to be installed at the Lycoming County Veterans Memorial Park on Wahoo Drive. “We’re not the only family in the area who has lost a son or daughter, husband or wife, in service to our country. And we want their service and sacrifice to be honored, too.” The Lycoming County Gold Star Family Memorial, made of black granite, fades to feature the outline of a service member poised in hand salute, forever saluting those who gave all. The memorial will be dedicated at a date in the near future (to be announced). Rocking The Monument To raise funds for the installation and maintenance of this memorial and other memorials at the park, the organization has partnered with the Community Arts Center to host a special event on Saturday, September 18th.

‘Rocking The Monument’ is a onenight-only event at the Community Arts Center featuring Bart Howard & The Mountain Road Band and Cass & The Bailout Crew. Backed by seasoned local musicians, Bart Howard and the Mountain Road band will be performing tracks from their EP “Ain’t Dress Rehearsal,” including the tribute song to his son Abe — Bart’s rendition of ‘In Color.’ Bart recorded the song on the day of Abe’s birthday, June 15th, of this year. “I feel like this was his last wish,” Bart says. “He wanted so much to play this song together. So, I’m playing it for him.” In addition to Howard’s set, local rootsrock band “Cass and The Bailout Crew” will be performing tracks from their album “Room to Breathe.” Mountain Road band includes some familiar names from the local music scene featuring Mike Steppe (Guitar/Vocals), Cass Chatham (Vocals), Nick Laylon (Bass), Mike Wrench Jr. (Drums), Jimmy Lovcik (Organ), Chris Carithers (Guitar), Donny Saar (Steel Guitar, Banjo), Adam Seiferth (Guitar). The show begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the box office or online at www.caclive.com. All proceeds benefit the Central PA Gold Star Family Memorial Fund and their new scholarship fund.

ome-talent movies on TV screens, pictures of local sports, and news events flashed over the air will become a reality locally if present plans for the city’s first television broadcasting station work out. WRAK-TV with rights to ultra-high frequency Channel 36 has been getting set for the big day for more than five years and if things go well, General Manager, George E. Joy expects the station to go on the air some time next September. No starting date has been set, but construction and installation equipment at the station’s mountaintop site south of the city should be completed by late January, Mr. Joy said. “Canned” programs will probably be the biggest TV fare at first. Catalogues from movie producers and TV film services have poured into Mr. Joy’s office since WRAK first announced its intention of the entering the new field in 1948. Programs offered include all types of entertainment or comedy, educational,

religious, musical, mystery and other subjects. Photographs can be snapped, developed, slipped into the machine and sent over the air in a short time. Both “stills” with voice commentary and motion pictures can be handled this way. A shift of three-man crews will operate the Shaffer’s Path transmitting station— announcer, transmitter operator and engineer. Full-fledged studios—possibly even a “roving camera unit”—will come as the station grows. Officials have been sounding out prospective program sponsors and if response to the new station is satisfactory WRAK-TV eventually may be able to provide “live” dramatic shows, roundtable discussions and similar service. The possibility of a network link-up is being explored, and Mr. Joy was in New York City last week for talks with several companies. However, nothing definite in this regard has been decided on so far. The new picture transmitter will have an effective radiated power of 206 kilowatts, and a synchronated sound system will operate on 10 kilowatts.

ho likes going out to eat? Show of hands. I don’t like going out to eat; I love it! I seriously think it’s one of my favorite things to do. I love everything about it, but the best part is the company. My girlfriends and I go out on the last Wednesday of the month. We all love being together, and each take turns picking where we want to go eat. Nothing like some girl time with three of my favorite girls once a month. Now, most of these

girls I see on the weekends. My group of friends, well, OK, let me change that. My ‘family’ and I get together every weekend — my husband, kids, and all of our besties. Honestly, if there is a weekend we have to skip, we all get a little bummed out. Going out for dinner together is always the best part of the weekend. We love being together. We love the food, and we love sitting around the table for hours. If the check doesn’t come right away, it’s no big deal. Someone typically com-

We walk out to the parking lot, and there we stand talking some more until we hug goodbye and yell, “LOVE YOU,” Andrea from our cars. COOKIN’

Friday night, let me just say it got a little rowdy! Shawn was his typical crazy self. (Anyone that knows him is nodding their heads right now, agreeing with me.) Plus, us all not being together in so long had us wound up; we finally had our family back together again. Our waitress would walk in on some of our discussions and just crack up laughing. She said we were such a fun table and enjoyed having us all. I can’t tell you how many times we have been out, and people say, “I want to sit at your table! You guys look like a fun bunch!” Oh, we are a fun bunch, alright, haha. When you get some insanely good food, you’re with your very best friends, and it’s the weekend that is a recipe for a good time. Then, when you add Shawn to the mix, it’s always a good time. He is the oldest of all of us but is the kid of the bunch. It always makes us smile and laugh. He is a crazy critter. When we were sitting at our table at the Nipp, he thought a man a few tables away was a pastor because of his collar. So, we are all turning and looking. Nope, definitely not a pastor. This man was with his wife drinking a beer and had on a white t-shirt with a black jacket with a popped collar. I mean, I could see why he looked like one, but why we all thought this was so funny was beyond me. I think it was something we were talking about, and

our volume button seemed to be broken that night. But we have a reputation to uphold for the fun table at our local hot spots. I think Shawn was worried the pastor heard us. Honestly, I think any pastor would love to join our table! We aren’t potty mouths or disrespectful in any way. We just enjoy being together and laugh and laugh and laugh. It’s all about having a good time. Some folks say weekends were made for family. Yeah, definitely! I mean, you have to make time for the ones you love, and if that open time is weekends, you make the time. I love our weekday dinners with my kids and husband. That’s our family time, but Friday and Saturday night, our family extends by five more people, sometimes more. (We have lots of ‘extended family in our group, but we don’t get together with all of them every weekend like we do the nine of us.) If we ever went out to eat on the weekends, just the four of us in town, my kids would be so bummed. They are used to their Uncle Shawn and Aunt Tania, Uncle Joe Joe and Aunt Winny, and their Aunt Manda all joining us. We’ve all been a group since Kenzy was born! That is all my kids know. Family is important. Friends are important. Friends who are family — they hold a special place in your heart. I say you get pretty darn lucky to find an amazing group of people to share

your life with. My three favorite things, family, friends, and food. Also, my three favorite “F” words! I still have a picture of Shawn with Tyler and Kenzy at T.G.I.Fridays back in 2015. Ty is six years old with his two front teeth missing. He has the biggest smile on his face because he loved being with Shawn. To this day, at twelve years old, he still loves to sit by Shawn at dinner. Kenzy was one year old, also sitting on his lap in the picture. Kenzy loves to get Uncle Shawn all fired up, or is it the opposite? Yea, I have that backward. Sorry about that. My kids love our extended family. They are so blessed to have so many people who love them. When you can go out to eat, laugh, and confide in one another about anything, it’s bittersweet. We literally pass around food and even drinks. “Oh, that looks good!” There goes the cup around so everyone can take a sip and try it. From meals to apps, what’s mine is yours, what’s yours is mine kinda deal with all of us. Always willing to share, as long as we are all healthy, of course. We always say we are family, so no big deal. Next week I am going to let you in on a few more of our favorite hot spots! Amazing restaurants with some incredible food that you need to go visit with your closest friends and family. I love to cook, but I love to go out to eat just as much. Who wouldn’t!? Wait till you hear about a few of these hidden little secrets! Restaurant-Style Loaded Potato Skins

finish off with a creamy sunscreen. This season, consider running a humidifier in your room overnight to keep the hydration going. On the opposite end of the spectrum is oily skin. If you have a shiny or greasy appearance, larger pores, and are prone to breakouts, you most likely have oily skin. While it may be tempting to use harsher products on oily skin, it may cause oil overproduction which is the opposite effect you’re looking for. Go with soap-free, foaming wash to cleanse your face. Skip the toner and the serum and head straight toward a lightweight, water-grabbing moisturizing cream or gel. Your sunscreen should both guard skin and contain oilabsorbing ingredients. Definitely exfoliate oily skin two to three times a week to keep pores as cleared out as you can. For those of us lucky enough to have both dry and oily skin, we fall into the combination skin club. You may find you’re oily in the T-zone (that’s the forehead, nose, and chin) while at the same time dry in the cheeks and tend also to experience breakouts. So, go for a gentle, balancing cleanser and work a serum into the dry areas of your face while avoiding the oily bits. A lightweight, pore-minimizing moisturizer is your best bet, and use an oil-free sunscreen. As a combination lady myself, I really like a mattifying compact with SPF built-in, which is great for

touching up during the day when I’m on the go. For folks with sensitive skin who experience redness, irritation, and dryness, make sure your cleanser is deep cleaning yet gentle. Look for a natural oil-based serum, but be careful; so many serums have retinol that can cause further irritation. In fact, no matter your skin type, you may be allergic to retinol, I am, so I always check a product’s ingredient list before use. Look for a moisturizer that is fragrance-free with anti-inflammatory ingredients. For sunscreen, use a mineral-based product to prevent irritation. Lastly, we have mature skin. Skin with an uneven tone, fine lines, and wrinkles would be considered mature. This type of skin should be cleansed with a mild product that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils. Toner is particularly important for mature skin, as it’s another opportunity to hydrate. Then use a serum with brightening properties, a collagen-based moisturizer, and a sunscreen with an SPF of 50+. Do I go through every step of my skincare routine every day? No, I skip some steps, add in others, and switch up products. This is just skincare; we haven’t even covered makeup. So, while on an ideal day, when I’ve gotten a good night’s sleep and my kids aren’t running around without pants, I would utilize all of my products to their maximum effect following my skin type and these steps. That day wasn’t today.

Faith Conversations…

Hold Tight and Spur On

I

n 2002, I was blessed with an opportunity to participate in a black powder elk hunt on the Floyd Lee Ranch in Cibola County, New Mexico. The hunt was provided by a group of guys who decided to bless their poor pastor-friend with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The fourby-four elk rack displayed near my woodstove serves as a constant reminder of a very special experience. The Floyd Lee is a working cattle ranch encompassing 300,000 acres. That’s 469 square miles. Sullivan County is 452 square miles. It’s hard to comprehend one ranch being that big.

Cowboys still ride fence on the Lee to inspect the integrity of its boundary. It can take up to two weeks to ride the circuit and make repairs. As they ride, the cowboys’ bunk in small buildings called line shacks. While hunting, we stayed in one of those shacks. It was small and dilapidated, and every surface was covered in a thick coating of dust – it really felt like the old west. During supper one night, a cowboy came in off the line to get some grub, bathe, and spend the night in the shack. He looked like he had just walked out of a Louis L’Amour movie, sporting three days of whiskers and a bushy handlebar mustache. He took off his

hat, duster, and leathers and joined us for supper. The conversation was a rich mix of elk hunting stories and cowboy lore. The cowboy asked us where we were from, and I responded with a pretty broad answer, “north-central PA,” to which he responded, Tim “Whereabouts?”. I anHartzell swered, “Williamsport.” What happened next was just plain fun. Here I am, 1,850 miles from home, eating supper in a line shack on a massive cattle ranch and talking to a genuine cowboy. Just that would make for a great

story, but what he said next, in a deep and slow western drawl, really got me, “How ‘bout that? I grew up in that area in a little town called Jersey Shore.” I estimated his age to be about 40 (this was 20 years ago), so I asked him if he remembered the name of his high school principal. “Yep. Kenny Crosser.” Then I told him I married one of Kenny’s daughters. He laughed. “Did you marry Heather or Laurel?” As it turns out, this gristly cowhand riding the line in New Mexico graduated from Jersey Shore High School with my Heather. We all enjoyed a good laugh as we considered the chances of our crossing paths in the absolute middle of nowhere. When I got home, Heather and I looked him up in her yearbook. There he was, twenty years

younger and a little less dusty. I share my elk hunting cowboy story with you as a way of introducing the theme of my next three articles, “Hold Tight and Spur On.” I’m not a western guy by any stretch of the imagination, but I do enjoy old episodes of Hee Haw, country music, watching crazy people ride broncos and bulls, and western movies – especially those Louis L’Amour ones. My inspiration for this series is found in Hebrews 10:23-24, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” The Bible never mentions anything about the Apostle Paul being a cowboy, but his reference to holding on and spurring makes me wonder a bit. Anyway, we are living in difficult and dark days. The world appears to be coming apart at the seams. The news is filled with pandemic fears, division over mask and vaccine mandates, chaos in Afghanistan, increasing racial tension, civil unrest, mounting terror threats, awful memories of 9/11, over-thetop political hostility, rumors of surging inflation, natural disasters — some say it’s worse than ever. It is messy out there, but is the world really worse off today than it’s ever been? No, it’s not, and I could give you plenty of examples. Our planet is deeply scared by thousands of years of pain and suffering. Man’s inhumanity to man knows no bounds. The sinful and fallen condition of the human soul provides a constant gravitational pull toward evil. Here is the simple truth:

The Roving Sportsman… Chasing Bushy Tails By Jon Pries

I

f you did a survey, particularly of older hunters, I bet most began their hunting days by tramping the woods searching for squirrels. They were certainly an upland game that I targeted in my early days of hunting. Today, there seems to be less interest in spending time hunting squirrels, yet there remain many good reasons to hunt them. While dove season and the early geese season began earlier this month, the squirrel season in Pennsylvania began on Saturday, September 11 — giving hunters an early opportunity to spend time hunting in our hardwood forests. Any time you can be in the woods in pursuit of the old bushy tail, you can be scouting out places to hunt for fall turkeys, deer, or other game as well. Squirrel hunting is one of the greatest opportunities to mentor youth or introduce a new hunter to the sport. Finally, when you are lucky enough to bring home a few squirrels, they can be mighty tasty on the dinner plate! So, let’s take a look at a few things to keep

N

in mind as you head out. Squirrels are tree dwellers that can be found throughout our Northcentral Pennsylvania hardwood forests. While they will eat the nuts of a beech tree, their preference as a food source is the acorn, with white oak acorns being their favorite. Unfortunately for farmers, they also can readily be found raiding nearby cornfields. If you can find a spot at the edge of a stand of white oak trees that lies next to a cornfield, you will be in a prime spot for squirrel hunting. Combine those two factors with a small stream meandering through, and you should have good success. Gray squirrels often begin moving about before sunrise and are active throughout the day. Always alert to possible predation, they rarely stray too far from a nearby tree where they can quickly climb to safety. If you are sitting nearby, occasionally rustling the leaves with your hand or a stick will simulate a turkey scratching or a squirrel digging in the leaves and will tend to convince them that the coast is clear and help lure them out into the open. Sitting in a grove of white oak trees

highly effective in taking a squirrel. Finally, bringing home several squirrels for the dinner table can be quite tasty, particularly when using this recipe for squirrel pot pie: Ingredients: one large onion, coarsely chopped, several stalks of celery, coarsely chopped, one large garlic clove, minced or pressed, 6 cups of beef broth, fresh ground pepper and salt to taste, two squirrels, cleaned and quartered, one 12 ounce can of mixed vegetables, one tablespoon of cornstarch and pastry for a doublecrust pie. Combine the onion, celery, garlic, broth, pepper, salt, and squirrel in a large pot and bring to a boil; simmer until meat is very tender and easily removed from bones. Debone the meat and set aside; reserve one cup of cooking liquid. Fit the bottom crust into a pie pan. Combine the meat, vegetables, and reserved broth, and cornstarch in a bowl and mix well; spoon the mixture into the pie shell. Top with the second crust, press the edges to seal, and cut vents in the top for steam to escape. Bake at 350 degrees until crust is browned, about 1 hour. ENJOY!

or next to a field of standing corn can be productive throughout the day, and the method of spot and stalk can be very effective as well. Take your time as you ease through the woods, often stopping to survey the area or listen for nearby squirrels. Hunting squirrels is all about patience. You don’t need to rush and shoot at a moving target; wait until the squirrel stops before aiming. Carry a few small rocks in your pocket. If you know there is a squirrel on the backside of a nearby tree, toss a rock beyond the tree — on the side where the squirrel is staying — and he just might scurry around to your side of the tree presenting a shot opportunity. Since the preferred methods of hunting bushy tails are either sitting or slowly walking as you spot and stalk, mentoring youth while squirrel hunting will provide an excellent chance to share time talking about firearm safety, ethical hunting methods, woodsmanship, and all the many facets of spending time in the woods that make hunting such an enjoyable and rewarding pursuit. For a mentored youth, one of the ideal firearms is a .22 rifle topped with a 4-power scope. The lack of recoil makes it a preferred introductory weapon, and they are

do not exhibit the white head and tail feathers. Vultures, like eagles, are efficient at soaring with their long, broad wings acting much like kites. When vultures catch a rising current of air, they can maintain or even increase their altitude without even flapping their wings. Flight patterns can be adjusted by simply changing the tilt of the V-shaped wing pattern, and they can soar for hours without ever flapping their wings. As a result of not using their wings like most other birds, vultures have relatively small breast muscles. If you have ever watched vultures on the ground, you soon realize that their rather clumsy movements are nothing like their graceful flight patterns.

Don’t expect to find any big vulture nests in trees since they make little or no nest but rather deposit their eggs on the ground, in the gravel on cliff ledges, or in rotted sawdust in logs and stumps. If reading about their eating habits has not already turned you off, add this one to the list; the young birds in the nest eat carrion regurgitated to them by their parents. While many may migrate in late February and March, it is not unusual to see vultures almost year-round throughout the state. I have not read much about their numbers, but it seems that I am seeing more in recent years than in the past, and I suspect their numbers

are quite stable and may be increasing. By the way, on occasion, you may even spot a black vulture. The black vulture is smaller with a wingspan of barely five feet; it has a short tail, and unlike the turkey vulture, the black vulture has a black head. In flight, the black vulture is less efficient at soaring due to the smaller wing pattern and therefore has more frequent wing beats. The black vulture is more common in the southern part of the state but occasionally shows up in our area. I think for my next bird watching challenge, I’ll try to distinguish between a turkey vulture and a black vulture while watching them in flight 500 feet up in the air.

My guess is people probably pay little attention to a turkey vulture until they actually see one or several gathered around a dead animal, but in reality, they are often quite visible almost any day of the week, but you have to look up. Turkey vultures are a common sight soaring high overhead, sometimes in good numbers. On a recent fishing outing, I counted a dozen or more vultures riding the wind currents over the lake. Both male and female vultures are covered with blackish-brown feathers, and they have a wingspan of up to six feet, similar in size to that of an eagle. In fact, in flight, sometimes vultures are mistaken for immature eagles, which

can’t completely put the 2021 Little League Baseball World Series in the rearview mirror without passing on one of those heartwarming stories that make Little League about much more than baseball games played by subteenagers. Ken Sawyer has repeatedly dubbed it “a series like no other,” and some have expressed the opinion that it just wasn’t the same without the participation of the international teams. While that may hold some validity, had not this Series been played with the format used, a lot

of great stories would not have unfolded. There would not have been the spectacular pitching performances of South Dakota’s Gavin Weir, who threw two no-hitters and established himself as perhaps the most dominant pitcher ever to appear in the World Series. We wouldn’t have seen Texas catcher Ella Bruning, the 20th girl to play in the Series and only the third to have two hits in a game. Hamilton, Ohio, would not have had the chance to advance to the championship game. All three of those teams had lost in the Regional final and

“When he gave me the ball, he said, ‘here you go,’” Schreppel said at the time. “I leaned into him, and I told him that when I played Little League [Schreppel played in the Original Little League and went on to play at Mansfield University], I was a catcher. He got a big smile on his face, and he patted me on the back. He was a really nice kid.” Just how nice a kid Noah really was, he would find out after the Series. When the Virginia team returned home following the Series, Noah remembered George. He sent him several baseballrelated gifts that included a signed Little League World Series ball and jersey. A friendship that began with that firstpitch ceremony was born. The two have remained in contact these past two years.

would have been home watching on television. But for me, one of the greatest memories of this year’s Series occurred several blocks from the Lamade Stadium complex, right across the street from my own home. The story began in 2019 but Scott reached new heights Lowery this year. During the 2019 LLBWS, Little League honored Mike and Gretchen Piscotty with its Parents of the Year Award. The Piscottys are the parents of current Oakland A’s outfielder Steven Piscotty. In 2017, after learning his mother had been diagnosed with ALS, Piscotty, then playing with the St. Louis Cardinals, asked the team to trade him to a west coast team so he could be closer to his family. St. Louis obliged, trading him to Oakland. Gretchen Piscotty passed away in 2018, and her husband, Mike, dedicated his life to raising funds and awareness to combat ALS. During the 2019 Series, LLB invited my South Williamsport neighbor, George Schreppel, himself battling ALS, to throw out the first pitch. He did just that with an opening pitch into the mitt of 12-year-old Noah Culpepper, a catcher for the team from Loudoun Little League of South Riding, Virginia.

The inscription on the Cube reads, “Thank you, your buddy Noah, to Mr. George.” Moved by his young friend’s thoughtfulness, George wanted to respond in kind with something he had treasured since he was 14. George was the catcher on a 1971 Babe Ruth championship team. George caught the final third strike of that memorable game and has kept the ball in his possession ever since. Undaunted, that ball marked with the words “champs 1972, won 17, lost 1” now has a new owner in a home in South Riding, Virginia. A young man, a man battling ALS, a Rubik’s Cube, and a prized baseball kept for 50 years have all combined to form a memory much stronger than anything seen before me on the playing fields of Lamade and Volunteer Stadiums. In 1965, a Lovin Spoonful song asked the question, “Do You Believe in Magic?” Yes, I believe I do.

45 • Webb Weekly September 15, 2021

On the first weekend of this year’s Series, the Schreppel’s received a surprise visitor, none other than Noah Culpepper and his family. They had driven up to see a Series game and renew their friendship. They returned for the championship game a week later, but not before making a very special presentation to George. Now 14, Noah wanted George to have something very special from him. During his team’s run to the 2019 Series, Noah engaged in a unique pre-game ritual. Prior to a Regional Tournament game, he was asked by ESPN if he had any special talents. He told them he could solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than a minute. He performed the task and dropped the Cube in the grass. Impressed, ESPN had him repeat the feat in subsequent games. So, to a man he knew nothing about before catching that first pitch in 2019, Noah presented George with his prized possession — that very Rubik’s Cube captured by ESPN cameras!

Sporting Matters With Spence…

What Do You Know About Football?

isclaimer. These articles are submitted Friday afternoon. Life gets busy, and I will occasionally miss my extended deadline. I often leave my lovely editor hanging. Those are never my intentions, kids. I sometimes struggle with part-time mobile freelance procrastination. There are so many great stories to share. Unfortunately, I simply need to do a better job of preparing. One of these days, I will figure it out. By now, week three of the high school football season is in the books. So instead of recapping each game several days later, I tend to rebuke. I sincerely hope that everything

went well and many of you got a chance to “tune in.” I take pride in being a play-by-play broadcaster. My mom always told me that I had a face for online streaming. I will always get several inquiries when I am shaking hands in the stands. Most folks know that I am a basketball guy, but they are totally puzzled when I plug in my headset. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT FOOTBALL? — is a popular and trending topic. Look, guys. I have been calling games for the past 20 years. Here is my resume. Yes. I have one here in my pocket. First, let me say that I am thrilled to be a part of a great team. Jimmy Webb and the

Webb Weekly provide a great platform, and they deserve applause. We send two crews to two games each week. We try to cover everyone at least once. While Paul Bo and Rich Zalonis usually follow the mighty Millionaires, Mark Mussina and I Jamie travel elsewhere. Online Spencer streaming is so important during the pandemic. We try to bring you fans all the action that we can. I ain’t going to lie, folks. It is great seeing all the crowds, cheerleaders, parents, and bands. It is hard to remember last year when there was literally no one in the stands. Yes. We are not on the radio. We are online. The picture is perfect, and the commentators are alright. Sorry, Grandma. You need a computer or a mobile device to follow. Our games are LIVE via YouTube and can be viewed across the world. I love hearing the feedback from old friends who are tuning in from other states. One of my chums recently gave me some love all the way from Japan. So, I don’t pay much attention to their comments. It is just nice to know that they are watching the stream. So back to the question that was proposed. Yes. Besides broadcasting, I actually know a few things about football. No one could beat me in Madden or SUPER TECMO. OK. I only played one year of organized ball at Curtin Middle School. I was a third-string receiver and a fourth-string corner. My playing time was VERY limited, but I took pride in being

a tackling dummy at practice. Coach Bobby Lynn always said I had great hands, but he was concerned for my personal safety. We were a running team like most junior high squads. Coach Lynn didn’t use signals or fancy note cards. He used us receivers to call in the plays. Out of 50 downs, we would throw the ball maybe once. I finally got an opportunity. We had a few injuries and a ton of disciplinary problems. I was moving up the depth chart. Coach grabbed me by the facemask and said BLUE RIGHT 34 BLAST. My first bit of real action. I was so excited. I went into block. I hustled to the huddle but forgot the call. I turned to our quarterback and quickly improvised. BLUE RIGHT 50Z GO. There I was on the very top of the formation. We ran the ball the previous 22 times, and I’m thinking Lycoming Valley didn’t see me as a threat. Our QB dropped back to throw. Everyone was shocked. I could only imagine Coach’s reaction. I didn’t look. I was concentrating on my pattern. I ran to the corner of the end zone. Again. I was all alone. A tight spiral was heading my way. The ball seemed to be in the air forever. It was dead silent. You could hear a pin drop. I said a quick prayer and somehow managed to catch it. TOUCHDOWN JAMIE SPENCER. Mr. Bassett dropped my name. The crowd went absolutely wild. Coach Bobby Lynn and I are still friends. He will occasionally officiate some of my hoops games. We both laugh and remember that particular moment. I decided to hang up my helmet the following season. I wanted to concentrate more on golf. It was a good move for everyone involved. Cheers.
