Way Above the Curve

A

few years back, shortly before he left us, I had Father John Manno out for a drive around town. I wanted to show him the progress that had been made in the Historic District and around the Annunciation Parish. From there, we rode on up to Historic Bowman Field, which was recently remodeled. As most of you know, Father Manno’s Dad played professional baseball, and he was more than impressed by the new Historic Bowman Field makeover. On the way back, I figured I’d show him all that had been done at Penn College. We went in the main entrance and then basically went up and down every street inside the campus. Out of everywhere we went that day, the biggest Wow! from Father John was at Penn College; he could not believe the progress, new construction, and how beautiful it was. He had seen it personally as Williamsport High School when I believe he said it became Williamsport Trade School which became Williamsport Area Community College (or WACC) and watched the transformation into Penn College. He was simply amazed at how this old City high school had been nurtured and developed into this beautiful college campus. I wish he could see what it looks like today and be explained the positive im-

pact the graduates are having on the current world we live in. What triggered my thoughts last week about this was when the Pennsylvania College of Technology named its new President, Michael J. Reed. Which I believe is an outstanding choice. I’ll cover this a little later. What I want to begin with is that amazing transformation from WACC to the Pennsylvania College of Technology. We cannot forget the foresight, commitment to educating young people and preparing them for the American workforce, and just the flat-out determination former President Robert Bruder exhibited to make this happen. He took WACC and turned it into a first-class educational facility. We also need to recognize and honor outgoing President Dr. Davy Jane Gilmore. She continued on full speed ahead with a plan for Penn College that has made it one of the best educational facilities in the Country in applied technology education. It’s hard for me to believe 24 years have passed since she was appointed. That time truly flew by in the blink of an eye. That leads us up to the new headman on campus, Michael J. Reed. A true born, raised and committed to what’s best in Penns Woods gentleman. He is a native of Glenshaw just outside of Pittsburgh. He’s been involved in education at almost every

to budget and balance a P&L. Amazing. Tip of my Pittsburgh Steeler Military Appreciation cap with the American Flag on the side to Senator Gene Yaw, Chair, and the Penn College Board of Directors along with the Presidential Search Committee for bringing Mr. Reed to Williamsport. Did I mention that the new President has the same love of all that is Black and Gold that I do? Congrats, and go get ’em, President Reed. In closing things out, a couple of tips of my orange Webb Weekly hunting cap with the American Flag on the side to the father/son duo of John and Tom Notor. They stopped by my office a couple of weeks back to get their bucks registered in the Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest. Papa John shot a beautiful 7-point. It marked the 25th year in a row that he has harvested a buck. He loves God, family, Country, and hunting, especially with his son. My kind of guy. Tom harvested a 5-point, which had almost a 16” spread. It’s probably the nicest 5-point I’ve ever seen, just missing a little genetics. He had a streak of 11 seasons in a row with a buck snapped a couple of seasons back. He’s now begun a new one. The father/son tandem shot their bucks the same day. Congrats, and keep on hunting. By getting registered, Tom and John are entered into our random rifle drawing and will have a donation made on their behalf to help fight MS. You can get your buck entered now through January 18, 2022. God Bless America.

Drexel University, IUP, Clarion, Penn State, He even completed a 9-month Executive Leadership Series Training Course offered by the Williamsport Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. All that being said, what makes him the right man at the right time for the job is the fact that he’s a proven winner as a businessman. In a day when all colleges and universities need to move away from the purely academia leadership card into the real world, that’s exactly what the Pennsylvania College of Technology has done. Mr. Reed is a managing partner at RSY Real Estate, which stands for the Reed and Shutey Team. More importantly than being the managing partner is that he is hands-on and has an impeccable reputation. In previous years he had great sales success working for AT&T, Wheeling Engineering, Protective Products International, and in his own landscaping project, The Lawn Barbers. A college president that understands sales are the lifeblood of any business and how

wo of my New Year’s resolutions were to eat better and save money. How those two work together is by eating more meals (and by more, I mean the majority) at home. That helps with healthier ingredients, portion control and of course, saving money. This means that I am once again on the hunt for recipes. I always love trying new recipes, and keeping my meals new and interesting helps to stave off the desire to just say, “forget it!” and go out, or even worse — order in! Seriously though, I could write a whole other article on the price of ordering food in these days! Talk about a budget killer! Anyway, I’m getting off track… Recipes! Yes! I’m always on the search for new recipes. These days, Crock-Pot recipes are really helpful. Some nights we can’t get to dinner until after 7, so having something in the Crock-Pot ready to go is always helpful. Since y’all know I like to share the recipes that I find to try with you, here are a couple that I aim to put in the line-up this week! r. Martin Luther King Jr. lived a life dedicated to service to others and calling attention to and helping to fight injustice. This is the theme of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Week and Day of Service that will take place from Wednesday, January 12 to Wednesday, January 19. “Martin Luther King Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities,” Lori Boos, Program Manager for AmeriCorps STEP locally, told Webb Weekly. “For the past quarter-century, AmeriCorps as a national service organization has been charged with leading this effort. As a local organization, STEP AmeriCorps has celebrated MLK Day since it became a local program in 2007. This year’s theme of “Has the Dream Been Realized?” is relevant because it makes us as community members remember that while progress has been made, there is still much work to be done to make our communities more equitable. Dr. King believed the Beloved Community was possible and fought for systemic change.” She continued, “We are called to action by his example. Making time to walk in the Peace Walk, taking part in one of the learning opportunities offered during Dream Week, or making a donation to FireTree Place or Dwell Orphan Care is a great way to engage with the community you live in, while honoring the legacy of MLK. I’m reminded of one of MLK’s

greatest quotes: ‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.’” According to Boos, this year’s Dream Week is a collaboration between STEP AmeriCorps, members of the former Beloved Community Council, Penn College, Lycoming College, and the local chapter of the NAACP. Links and QR codes for this year’s virtual events will be published closer on the STEP AmeriCorps Facebook page as we get closer to each event. Please also watch the Facebook event page for updates based on changes that may need to be made due to COVID. “We are so excited to offer ways to honor MLK and what he stood for during this community-wide event! Please share with your friends, co-workers, churches, and neighbors!” said Boos. To kick off the week on Wednesday, January 12 from 5 to 6 p.m. Lycoming Tri-County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) meeting will be held virtually on Zoom. “The NAACP is a multi-racial civil rights organization founded 112 years ago. This storied organization has a long history of fighting for civil rights and the end of racist practices in our country. This local branch seeks to educate, raise up Black voices, and cultivate the community energy of residents in our region to make changes here.” Monday, January 17 at 10:45 a.m.: In-Person Peace Walk. The Peace Walk begins and ends at Christ Community Worship Center (436 W. 4th Street in Williamsport). Pastor Mar-

In the United States, the opioid epidemic shows no signs of abating. As much concern as there is over the deaths due to COVID, the ongoing plague of drug deaths reached over 100,000 last year, a significant spike. And unlike the COVID pandemic, which hit elderly Americans the hardest, researchers found drug deaths have risen fastest among the young and middle-aged adults struggling with addiction. Unfortunately, Lycoming County has been a crossroads for both drug and sex trafficking because of the intersection of the major highway routes, making it a convenient rendezvous for drug dealers from New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and others. Our local law enforcement officials have done a herculean job against the drug trade, but as long as the supplies continue unabated, our county will

liches are useful, but sometimes contradict one another. For example, the former U.S. Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill coined the phrase, “all politics is local,” noting that a politician’s success is directly tied to their ability to understand and influence the issues of their own constituents. This is certainly true with our county government officials, as they must wrestle daily with the local concerns of those they govern. Yet, another cliche challenges this one, known as the “butterfly effect.” Explained in various ways, the most famous was in the film “Jurassic Park” where the scientist played by Jeff Goldblum explained this phenomenon, “when a butterfly flaps its wings in Peking, and you get rain in Central Park rather than sunshine.” What this implies is that the world is so interconnected; what happens on the other side of the world impacts us here in Lycoming County as well. The COVID virus is a living, breathing monster that exemplifies this notion vividly. At the same time, as Tip O’Neill reminds us, these global impacts must be dealt with at the local level. So, what are some other things that we might expect to impact us that are floating around the globe as we speak?

(wait for it) Pennsylvania! The New York Post recently noted that at least five flights carrying the illegal immigrants landed at airports in Scranton and Allentown late last month from Texas. Lou Barletta, who is running for governor, and a former GOP Congressman, confronted the Biden administration on these secret flights. Was this just the beginning for the Keystone State? Stay tuned. When illegal immigration went from 400,000 in 2020 to over 1.6 million in 2021, the highest annual total on record, it can’t but somehow impact our country. These people will live somewhere, and we should not be surprised if our federal government does not eye the sleepy upstate Pennsylvania counties. It was exactly this logic that led the federal government to impose public domain to seize 25,000 acres in the White Deer Valley (southern Lycoming County/ northern Union County) and evict hundreds of farmers and village residents from their ancestral homes to build a TNT plant in 1942. This happened as a response to a decision made in Tokyo in the 1930s that led to the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, which resulted in the U.S. declaring war against Japan. One of those families that were evicted from the White Deer Valley to make way for the munitions plant for the United States war effort just happened to be my own mother and father. Sometimes I can almost feel those butterfly wings flapping on the other side of the world.

continue to suffer. From a global perspective, the nations of Russia and China have not changed their spots, although their communist governments are not what they were like decades ago. However, some things do not change, and one of these is that these two monoliths never seem to be comfortable with their own boundaries — they always desire more. The rumblings going on with Russia threatening Ukraine and China’s growing encroachment toward Taiwan are in direct proportion to the weakness they perceive in the military strength of the United States that has traditionally supported these two countries. If these encroachments become military engagements, the USA will respond in some way, although what that would look like is very difficult to figure out right now. But if it results in a military response, then it would not be surprising to see an uptick in the number of young men and women in Lycoming County enlisting, given that this area has traditionally been a very patriotic region. If this would happen, the result could also impact the local economy to some degree as this would mean a loss of workers (at a time when businesses are desperate for employees) and consumers. The miserable conditions in Central and South America fueled largely by socialist governments, combined with the lifting of all restraints on illegal immigration, has led to an incredible flood over our nation’s southern border. These immigrants have been disbursed beyond the southwest states, as far as Florida, New York, and

layer. Like a semi-sheer turtleneck under a vest, cardigan, blazer, or sleeveless dress, a sheer top is a modern take on a base layer for winter dressing. Too much? Sheer hosiery is a more subtle take on this trend. A pair of black sheer tights vs. pantyhose or opaque tights nicely contrasts with a sweater dress or a slim knit skirt, especially if there’s a slit for the sheer to peekaboo through. Of course, you can’t go wrong with animal prints. For 2022, it’s all about zebra and tiger prints so that you can give your leopard-printed pieces a break this year. Coats, bags, dresses, and blouses all come in standard animal stripes and abstract patterns, and colorful versions. If that seems overwhelming, try to mimic a zebra pattern with a vertical print in black and white. For an even more toned-down take on the animal kingdom, simply combine the colors of a tiger’s print — black, white, and an orangey-brown/ beige for a more chic, less wild look. Another bold trend this year is fringe. This season, fringed pieces are anything but ordinary and expected. I’m not talking about the fringe on a leather coat. But more so, tassels along an

asymmetrical hem or strips of fabric along the shoulder seams. Look for pieces with tassels and twists that show up in various ways or a single line of fringe with unexpected placement. If all of this talk of color, texture, animal prints, and fringe puts your head in a spin, don’t worry, this year will also see the rise of redefined preppy style. The modern version of preppy wear focuses on quirky combinations of classic pieces. Polo shirts with suiting separates, plaids mixed with polka dots, oversized sweaters with trench coats over pleated skirts. This trend combines the sporty with the school uniform, like tennis-inspired dresses worn with penny loafers. I wouldn’t recommend this style so much for winter, but definitely consider it for spring. Chances are you most likely won’t be revamping your overall aesthetic this season. You can still incorporate trending pieces in your everyday style. Things like oversized scarves, shearling-lined handbags, Ugg-style boots, and puffer vests are also on-trend for Winter 2022 and can be easily mixed in with your cold-weather wear.

that spontaneous bursting into song can seem tacky and unreal. But not in Spielberg. Since this is his first foray into the genre, I have no idea how he managed it. Still, there’s an utterly compelling vitality — a raw and organic effortlessness — to virtually every tune onscreen, especially in the fire-escape scene. And this ambiance is all the more notable because we might expect the wide familiarity of these tunes to leave them feeling stale or worn-out, but those terms don’t apply to a single thing in this incredible film. See it in the theater if you can. **** (out of four) Rated PG-13; 156 min.

Second leads Ariana DeBose (Anita), and David Alvarez (Bernardo) are likewise superb; but really, there isn’t a dull performance in the entire film. Long-time Spielberg lens-man Janusz Kaminski (“Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan”) is at the top of his game here; he may find himself with a third Oscar come March 27. But for me, the most impressive feature of “West Side Story” is the way its musical set-pieces never feel tackedon or artificial. Though I love “Top Hat” and “Singin’ in the Rain,” I’m not a huge fan of musical films — in part because Hollywood doesn’t always adapt them well, but mostly because all

Williamsport Sun January 11, 1922 City’s First Big Snow Causes Problems

By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he first real snowstorm of the season in Williamsport and vicinity, which reached blizzard proportions, connected up with the city about 5:45 o’clock this morning. It at first looked like a light snow, but as the morning

wore on it was seen that the downfall was likely to prove one of the old fashioned kind, and would probably make a day of it. Although the storm was general over the Central Pennsylvania Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, there was no trouble in moving trains. The storm has proved a godsend

for the unemployed in Williamsport and this section of the state, as the Pennsylvania Railroad is getting a great many of them to work shoveling snow from the tracks, station platforms and yards. Superintendent H.H. Russell of the Williamsport Division secured 50 men through L.J. Fisk of the state employment bureau. The Williamsport Passenger Railway Company experienced the most trouble with the storm in Williamsport and its suburbs, although the big electric plow was run over the system at early hour, and made frequent trips through the rest of the day, it was “hard sledding” for the trolleys. At 11 o’clock there were three

trolleys off the track—one at Third and Pine Streets, one at Fourth and Pine, and one out at in the Vallamont district. During the day cars were derailed, causing a tie-up each time. One car this morning consumed an hour from the hospital to Market Square. The ordinary time is about 15 minutes. Dealers in rubbers did a “land office” business this morning and some of them sold out their stocks in no time. It was hard to supply the demand. Superintendent George H. Harris of the highway bureau put a large force of men to work about noon. The men were put to work clearing the crossings in an effort to keep them passable.

t has been over 64 years since that first neighborhood picnic that started what has become the central Pennsylvania tradition of Candy Cane Lane. In those ensuing years, hundreds of thousands of friends have viewed the lights and displays. At times, with a lengthy wait, generations of families have enjoyed this event together driving and walking the hill. Over the years, we have thanked those for visiting, the countless friends who help put up and take down the scenes, those who help keep everyone safe (Clinton, Northumberland & Lycoming County Fire Police) and the entire DuBoistown and South Williamsport communities who deal with some busy traffic conditions. However, now, I would like to thank each and every family on Candy Cane Lane...from the three original founding members still living on the street, to the newest family who just moved in several months ago. I know it takes a lot of hard work, time, money and even inconvenience. This past year has been especially rough for many reasons. So, if you ask yourself why expend your limited resources...I ask you to look at the faces, young and old, on any given night, of the visitors who come from near and far to view your gift to them. In this time of an ever increasingly complex and divisive world, maybe it is this simple gift, freely given, that means the most.

With Sincere Gratitude, Craig Kropp

SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE

and the answer would jump right off the pages. What I was experiencing was more than just religion. It was life and excitement. This Jesus was real! In time, God sent me the perfect wife for me. We were happily married and having children and I was working a job. I didn’t yet know that God called me in to the ministry. Then as often happens when serving Him, He arranges circumstances. I was asked to begin having a Bible study at a friend’s house. We soon out grew the living room and moved to the basement. This was in 1969, and there was a movement sweeping across the nation that would be called the Jesus People Movement. Soon we would be caught up in it. One night as we were meeting in the basement about 15 young “hippies” came to the meeting. That was the beginning of many young people coming and getting born again. One of the young women gave her heart to Jesus, we

baptized her and she came up from the water filled with the Holy Spirit. Just like in the book of Acts in the Bible. From then on, we saw amazing things, much to my surprise. If it was in Bible, we preached it. We saw people’s lives changed, marriages restored, and sick bodies healed. I felt so inadequate within myself. Then I read in the Bible that God used a donkey to speak to a wayward prophet. I took courage, if God can use a donkey, he can use anyone. After that I put my trust in God. We learned that Jesus was the way back to God and just as important the only escape from the great judgment that was coming. Learning of the hell Jesus said was coming to the disobedient and rebellious against God. This did something positive in me. It gave me a determination to be thankful. A determination not to quit and a determination to point others to Jesus Christ. Also, a greater burden to pray for

my family and friends, so they do not end up in the hell the Bible describes. After over fifty years of pastoring and I’ve seen how relevant God’s word can be when lived out; contended marriage, children growing up and becoming balanced people. If people could only see what real Christianity was like; everyone would want to be become a Christian. But there are so few of the real, people get the wrong message. At our Church we are learning, to be led by the word of God and enjoy life. What joy, contentment and peace. Jesus said, “… Seek [and keep seeking] and you will find.” As written in the scriptures God said, “In the day you seek Me with your whole heart you will find Me.” This is the year to find Jesus for yourself, find Him to be real and He will change your life! t this season as we have just celebrated the birth of Jesus. Sing songs like “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” Yet what is more exciting to me is that we can celebrate His life throughout the entire year. How do we celebrate Him all year long? We celebrate by allowing Jesus to teach us and lead us, when we open our hearts and embrace His teachings. Our relationship can become personal just like we read in the Bible. People talked to God and God talked to man. The Bible says that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. I know as a young man asking Jesus to coming into my heart and my life, then picking up my Bible, I began to read. The excitement and the fresh new life. The Bible became a living book and Jesus became more than just a character in a book. I would pray and he would answer. At times I would have questions and I would open my Bible

H

ere we are, mid-January already. After the holidays, life slows down a bit, and you get to breathe. Well, at least for a week or so. You know what mid-January is for us? Birthday bliss! My stepdad, Mark Metzger’s birthday is first, then my gram, Lois Liddick, then my daughter, Kenzy, and finally my husband on the 17th. I also have an aunt and uncle with birthdays at the end of January. I think it’s the busiest month out of the year for birthdays. When I was pregnant with my daughter,

her due date was on my gram’s birthday. Lois, my gram, thought this was just the best thing ever. A new great grandbaby that could possibly be born on her birthday! As soon as she found this out, she had a bond with her. She would rub my belly and tell her to come on G.G.’s birthday, but then would whisper to me, “Well, maybe she will want her own birthday, and that’s OK!” Mid-December in 2013, I swore she was going to be born early. I was so uncomfortable and thought it would be any day now. Plus, my son was three

days late and was a bigger baby, and they ‘measured’ her saying she was a bigger baby and didn’t want her to come late. Well, New Year’s came, and it came closer to her due date. Me, feeling miserable, Andrea was ready for her McElroy to come into the world. Monday, January 6th, I went in for a checkup. They said they wanted to get me a bed and get the ball rolling. I

said, “Sounds amazing. Let’s do this!” A few minutes later, the nurse came in and said, “I’m sorry, honey, there are no beds available in labor and delivery, so we will send you home for now and have you come back Wednesday.” Seriously people? Why are y’all having babies in January? (This is what I was thinking because I was so uncomfortable.) Wednesday, January 8th, my mom and I went to the hospital that morning. My husband went to work because I told him to. With our son, it took twentyeight hours to have him. I told Chris to go to work, and when the ball got rolling, I would call him, promising him that he

HOME COOKIN wouldn’t miss anything. I knew how it would go and wanted him to save his days at home with the baby and me and not sitting around in a hospital for hours on end. Needless to say, Wednesday was a no-go. Kenzy was saying, “not today!” I went back home, and we were prepared to go back the next day to try again. Thursday, January 9th came. Gram’s birthday! Today had to be the day; I could feel it. I laid in bed with my momma right by my side. There was a knock at the door. “Yoo-hoo! It’s G.G! Do we have a baby yet!?” as my gram’s head popped in the door. She was just so excited for her arrival, and we had told everyone her name was going to be Kenzy Mae. Mae was after my gram, Lois Mae Lockcuff. We knew when she had G.G.’s birthday as a due date; we had to give Kenzy her name. I had told the nurses the story about her due date and why having her that day was so important! Hours later — guess what? I was sent home — again! I wanted to bawl. Every day that week, I had my heart set on meeting my sweet little girl, and every day was a letdown. Then, to not have her on my gram’s birthday was such a bummer. Gram said, “She wants to be the day after my birthday and have her own day! We will still be birthday buddies.” Friday, January 10th came, and Mom

and I headed to the hospital again. See a pattern here? And why my husband, at this point, is still going to work each day?? He would have had three days off at this point and no baby. Finally, at 11 a.m., the induction worked! A little after midnight on January 11th, Kenzy Mae was born at 8 lbs., 1 oz. She wasn’t big at all, and when we left the hospital, she was 7 lbs., 4 oz. So, I needed to go shopping because I had nothing small enough to fit her after thinking she would be big like her brother. We all laughed that she came a little after midnight because she really wanted her own birthday time, haha! But you know the greatest part? Both of my kids were three days late, and I was in labor with both kids on a Friday. (So, my hubby had the weekend, then paid days off that following week!)

Kenzy was born exactly a week before her daddy’s birthday, and Tyler was born a week before my birthday. How funny is that? Both three days late from the due date and exactly a week apart from my husband and I’s birthdays. Kinda neat, and God definitely knew what he was doing. At Kenzy’s first “WinterONEderland” birthday party we also celebrated G.G.’s 75th birthday! We had the whole family over to celebrate. Gram and Kenzy always had a special bond, and I am so grateful for the sweet story it gives Kenz to tell throughout her life. Here’s to wishing my loveable stepdad Mark Metzger, amazing grandmother

he question was popped; the engagement ring presented. What’s the next step on the road to the wedding? Saving should definitely be on couples’ minds. A wedding is likely the most costly party couples will ever throw. According to The Knot’s 2019 Real Weddings Study, the average cost of a wedding in 2019 was $33,900. There are many different costs associated with weddings. Some are predictable, while others are unexpected. Investopedia says the vast majority of couples budget too little for their weddings and also end up spending more than they had planned. Various strategies can make it easier

to save for a wedding and avoid a post-wedding financial hangover. Get informed It’s impossible to budget for a wedding and ultimately save without knowledge of what services and items cost in the region where you live. A wedding in New York City will be expensive, while a wedding in Mississippi will cost a lot less, indicates SuperMoney’s guide to wedding costs. Conduct some research and find out what photographers, florists, transportation providers, reception halls, and wedding wardrobe vendors charge for common services. This will paint a vivid picture of what a wedding may cost in your area. Flesh out the budget

home purchase or other financial goals is to use an automatic savings account that may be available through your bank or employer. An automatic savings plan will pull a set amount from a personal checking account into a savings account through auto-draft. The bride and groom can link individual checking accounts to one savings account to contribute jointly. Avoid overspending An analysis of your spending habits will likely reveal areas where you

can scale back so you can devote more funds to wedding savings. Do you need a takeout coffee in the morning or can you brew a pot at home? Might you be able to scale back on streaming services? Do you feel comfortable buying less expensive store brand groceries over name brands? Small cost savings can quickly add up. Add up gifts Factor in deduction of expenses that other people will commit to covering for wedding expenses,

but only if you have concrete confirmation. A parent may host the rehearsal dinner. One’s relative may offer to pass down an antique wedding gown to wear. But rather than simply removing these gifts from your savings calculations, keep them as a safety net to put toward unforseen expenses. Saving for a wedding can be challenging. But various strategies can help couples plan their dream weddings without breaking the bank.

Once you have gathered estimates, you can then figure out a financial goal. This also is when you can determine where to rein in spending and where you might want to splurge. If having a video memory of the wedding is not a top priority, you can skip videography services. If you have a special flower that you like, you may want to budget more for that bloom even if it isn’t in season. ‘Plus One’ Etiquette for Wedding Guests

M

aking a wedding guest list is seldom an easy task. Couples often find that many people are worthy of an invitation, which can make creating a guest list tricky for those with budgets in mind. According to data from the online wedding resource The Knot, the average wedding catering cost per guest is roughly $70. However, catering costs will vary depending on the reception venue, the number of guests, the foods chosen, and the region of the country where the wedding takes place.

When creating their guest lists, couples may wonder if they have to offer all guests the option of bringing a “plus one” to the occasion. As with other wedding day etiquette questions, the plus one concept is not set in stone. Any guest who is married It’s typically standard to invite a couple as a whole to the wedding, even if you’ve never met the spouse. This often comes up when inviting work friends, according to Vogue magazine. Even if you have never interacted with a coworker’s spouse, etiquette dictates

that all married guests be allowed to bring their spouses along. Any guest who is engaged or is in a serious long-term relationship It can be challenging to know the relationship status of everyone who will be invited to the wedding, but chances are you’ll have a good idea of those people closest to you. Include a plus one for guests who are engaged or in longterm relationships. Consider guests who may not know others Weddings often are times when childhood friends reconnect, or people who haven’t seen each other in a while come together. If there’s a good chance

someone who is single and is invited to the wedding may not know anyone else there except the couple, extend a plus one as a courtesy. Include the wedding party All members of the wedding party should be offered the option of bringing a date to the wedding. Apart from these guidelines, couples can establish any other rules, such as no plus ones for guests under a certain age or those who are not in serious relationships. The Knot also says it is polite to find out who the plus one will be so that wedding reception seating cards include that person’s name instead of “and guest.”

Your will be done.” The posture of humble prayer establishes life under a divine sovereign order. In victory, God receives our thanksgiving. In loss, God receives our trust. Either way, God receives our praise. See Job 1:21. There is a deep and unchangeable current in the sovereign will of God. No human prayer can change its course. Jesus and Paul were both swept into God’s sovereign plan, even after they pleaded in prayer for it to be changed. See Matthew 26:36-46 and II Corinthians 12:710. why bother with prayer?” Cooling off on prayer generally happens because we don’t fully understand all that is accomplished in prayer. If we think a yes answer is the only definition of success in prayer, then we’re not understanding the full meaning and purpose of prayer. So, let’s talk about it. The purpose of prayer is humility. It is a spiritual discipline that establishes our lives under God’s sovereignty. Jesus taught us this discipline in The Lord’s Prayer and in the Garden of Gethsemane by praying, “Thy will be done.” Humility declares, “God, here’s what I want, but you know better than me. I trust you. Please do it Your way. Let

no to Paul and even to Jesus, then there will be times when He will say no to us. When He does, it puts us in good company as He entrusts us with His sovereign will. It is a difficult truth, but there are times when the answer to prayer, even the prayer of the righteous, is a hard no. Accepting God’s sovereign will in a no answer takes true humility and discipline. The discipline of prayer keeps us in that humble place of sovereign order. Do you trust God enough to keep praying, even through seasons of disappointment? The Passion of Prayer is Change

Our prayers seem most passionate when we are seeking to change a tragic course of events. We’ve all experienced desperate times of prayer where our greatest hope was a changed outcome, like healing from a terminal illness, or the restoration of a broken marriage, or the return of a lost child. Sometimes the answer is a resounding, Yes!, and we call it a miracle. It is an awesome experience to witness a full-on miracle where God clearly changes the course of events. The fact that such miracles still happen keeps passion in our prayers. But God doesn’t always change the

our realm of control. It is impossible to go before God with a sincere heart and not be changed by prayer. There’s a lot that happens when we pray! The Pleasure of Prayer is Peace And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 Of all the pleasures we can experience in this world filled with conflict, peace may be the greatest of all. Prayer releases the Christian from worry and bitterness and guilt and fear, and — well, it’s a long list. My friends, there is so much more to prayer than just seeking yes answers.

Moses prayed, and God relented from destroying the grumbling Israelites. My friends, sometimes prayer can cause change! It is the hope of change that puts passion in our prayers. And here’s the thing, we must pray passionately about everything because we don’t know what is set in sovereignty and what is changeable. This is why Paul urges us to include every situation in our prayers: Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 Most importantly, prayer changes our hearts and the course of events within

Frankly, if getting a yes answer is the only reason you pray, then it’s time to check your motivations. Selfishness may be the reason your prayer life has cooled. See James 4. If your prayerlessness is based on not getting what you wanted, then it’s time to repent and get back on your knees in prayer. We need you in the battle! “The greatest thing anyone can do for God and man is pray. It is not the only thing, but it is the chief thing. The great people of the earth today are the people who pray. I do not mean those who talk about prayer; not those who can explain about prayer; but I mean those people who take time and pray” S.D. Gordon

course of events – at least not the ones we’re concerned with. Sometimes He uses our obedience in prayer to change something else. That’s what God did with Jesus and Paul. They both pleaded with God to change course, but God’s answer was no. God was doing something else, something bigger. Faith is no easy discipline! The repentant people of Nineveh prayed, and God’s plan changed. Did you hear that? God had already set a date and time for their destruction, but when they heard about it, they prayed and repented, and God relented. His heart was changed by their prayers!

Top Fitness Trends for 2022 By Dave Bellomo

T

he American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recently released its list of fitness trends for 2022, and tech tops the list. The annual forecast consisted of survey results from 4,500 health and fitness professionals from around the world and was published in the January/ February edition of ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal. According to the ACSM survey results, now in its 16th year, more people are turning to wearable technology to help track exercise and sleep, both of which are critical in the ongoing battle against COVID-19. The annual forecast list, which helps health and fitness professionals make programming and business decisions, also included home exercise gyms and high-intensity interval training, among other trends. Surprisingly, live online and on-demand exercise classes such as Peloton and Beach Body On Demand, which ranked No. 1 in 2021, dropped to 9th. The top 10 fitness trends for 2022 are: Wearable Technology: Devices like Fit Bit, Garmin, and other personal fitness trackers top the ACSM forecast for the most popular fitness trends in 2022. Some tech, such as smartwatches, can even monitor heart rate, count steps and calories, track inactivity and sleep time, and measure blood pressure and respiratory rate. Home Exercise Gyms: If the pandemic has

taught the fitness industry anything, it’s that home gyms are back. With a desire to skip the crowded gym, many people decided to work out solo in the last couple of years. As restrictions have eased, many never went back to the gym. Equipment for personal use such as free weights, treadmills, and exercise bikes have been in high demand and are more popular than ever. Outdoor Activities: Whether individually or in a group, many people have rediscovered their love of the outdoors. Activities such as walking and hiking have gained tremendous traction. In addition, biking on trails and kayaking have become new favorites for many outdoor enthusiasts. Strength Training with Free Weights: It wasn’t too long ago that so-called “experts” thought that lifting free weight was purely for aesthetics. Since then, exercise scientists and health care professionals have found that strength training is for everyone and provides a myriad of health benefits. Pro trainers and everyday enthusiasts alike now embrace training with dumbbells, barbells, and kettlebells, making resistance training one of the top trends for 2022. Exercise for Weight Loss: Experts have found that if you want to lose weight, the addition of exercise to a proper diet is far more effective than diet alone. So, take a walk or lift some weights while you trim those calories. Your waistline will thank you. Personal Training: Professional trainers are always popular, and who wouldn’t want

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT): This type of exercise consists of short bursts of high-intensity activity mixed with intervals of a more moderate intensity. It’s the best of both worlds, combining the benefits of a difficult program, where heart rates can climb, with the duration of lower intensity, more sustainable activity all in approximately 30 minutes. The Lycoming County Beagle Club and Beagling Tradition By Wes Sones

he new year brings with it new opportunities for hunting in Pennsylvania. The late small game season is now open for Quail, Pheasant, Squirrel, and Cottontail Rabbit until Feb. 28th. Harvesting a big buck or doe is, of course, exciting but hearing a pack of Beagles on a rabbit is music to a Beagler’s ears. Even if those ‘wascally wabbits’ give you the slip. Just being in the field and hearing the dogs work is reward enough. I always feel a little guilty when I

head to my deer stand and my 8-year-old Beagle Trigger, seeing my hunting clothes and gun, howls with lament at being left behind. Eager and ready to go at a moment’s notice, you couldn’t want for a better hunting companion. Beagles can be traced back to 16th century England where they were used for hunting rabbits and other small prey. The breed is considered one of the most popular breeds and became recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885. ing contraband food items in luggage? It shouldn’t come as a surprise that even if a Beagle can’t find a rabbit, they can always find their feed dish! President Lyndon B. Johnson even had beagles while he was in the white house. Two of the better-known AKC registered Beagles Johnson owned were “Him” and “Her.” The Beagle is a breed with a storied history and steeped in hunting tradition. Today that tradition is continued through the efforts of clubs like the Lycoming County Beagle Club. The Lycoming County Beagle Club features an annual Rabbit Hunt where teams of hunters can compete for the heaviest rabbit and cash prizes. Participants can share stories and enjoy some delicious food served by club volunteers. This year’s Rabbit Hunt will be held on Jan. 22nd, 2022. Hunters can hunt at their favorite spot (not on club grounds) and then submit their rabbit for weigh-in at the Club between 4 and 6 p.m. Registration is $40 per team. Teams can consist of up to 3 adults with multiple registered youth hunters (16 years of age and under). There is a one rabbit limit per adult team with a one rabbit limit per registered Youth Hunter. Established in 1952, the Club is a non-profit organization in North Central PA that promotes the sport of beagling and is a member of the IBGA (Iroquois Beagle Gundog Association), PBGF (Pennsylvania Beagle Gundog Federation), and NEBGF (Northeast Beagle Gundog Federation). Several events are offered throughout the year for beaglers

The Roving Sportsman… Habitat Improvement: Eliminate the Invasives Over the next few months, while snow is By Jon Pries

Y

our Habitat Management Plan should include an inventory of current desirable and undesirable trees, shrubs, and vines on your property. Additionally, include a listing of those new trees, shrubs, and vines you would like to add – including how and where you want to plant them. As an early step in your action plan, you need to address the issue of invasive plants and how to eliminate them on your property. Some of this work can be accomplished throughout the winter months while there is snow on the ground to aid in seeing the plants to eradicate, and things like spraying and other herbicide application will have to wait until spring or summer. Eliminating the Invasive Plants: Over the years, government agencies and well-intended organizations have offered free seedlings of autumn olive, Tartarian honeysuckle, barberry, and multiflora rose to be planted for wildlife habitat improvement. Since their introduction, each of these species has spread, sometimes completely taking over fallow fields and forest openings. Today, each one of these species is listed as a non-native invasive plant that should be eradicated wherever possible.

on the ground and before grasses and other vegetation push up, these invasive plants are easily spotted wherever they pop up in fields or along field edges. As we get into the summer months, the ground will harden, making it more difficult to mechanically remove some of the larger and more mature plants; thus, spraying may be a better option. Further, once these undesirable plants are removed, you can plant new shrubs and trees that will provide much better wildlife cover and feed. If the plants are small enough, mowing them with a brush hog will keep them in check and, over time, begin to eliminate them altogether. If the plants are larger and have developed a larger woody stem, they may be removable with the use of a chain or cable and ATV or tractor to pull them out. If they are really large and otherwise unmanageable, you will probably have to resort to chemicals to eliminate them. The most effective way to clear out the large invasive plants is to cut them off at the base or trunk at ground level and apply a small amount of Roundup or Garlon 4 on the stump. It takes very little of the herbicide to stop any future growth and kill the plant. While I hesitate to recommend chemical treatments, the use of these herbicides is very effective as a last resort in killing each

in the opening. It will kill the tree. Between the striped maple and the New York or hay-scented fern, the fern is the more critical to eliminate as it emits a toxin wherever it grows that restricts other plants from growing, and it has no real food or cover value for wildlife. Elimination of these invasive and encroaching plants is a critical first step in any habitat improvement plan. Once they are eliminated, you can turn your attention to developing food plots, creating better field conditions for wildlife, and establishing valuable plantings of shrubs, trees, and vines that will benefit wildlife of all kinds more adequately. Next time, we’ll look at some of the particular species that will thrive in our area and what improvements should work for you.

of the invasive species we are trying to eliminate. While the majority of these invasive species will be found in field settings or along forest edges, they can also be found and should be eliminated in woodland settings as well. Stripped Maple and Hay-Scented Fern: Finally, there are two undesirable species of plants frequently found in the woods and along field edges that we should turn our attention to that should be a target for elimination – the striped maple and the New York or hay-scented fern. Spraying the ferns with Roundup – particularly in July and August is very effective. For the striped maple, in the springtime, as their growing season is beginning, make a nick in the outer bark of the tree with a hatchet or machete and apply two or three drops of Garlon 4

CELEBRATE THE SOUNDS OF LIFE

Artisan Hearing Technologies, LLC adding quality to life every day

“My hearing aids are over five years old, and have served me well over the years. It’s time for a new hearing aids and to my surprise my insurance covered my hearing aids in full! I received hearing aids that retail for $6000 paid in full by my insurance company. The first thing that happens when you walk in the door at Artisan Hearing Technologies, is that they check your insurance for you to see if you have a hearing aid benefit. I have always loved the service, professionalism, and staff at Artisan, however I am so excited with my new insurance! I do not have to pay one penny for my new hearing aids. From my experience it is very important that you have a hearing evaluation, and your hearing aid customized to your hearing loss by a professional. I am getting all of this for free with my insurance. Before you ever consider buying something over-the-counter, I suggest you at least have your insurance checked. And based on my experience in the past, I was very surprised at how many insurance companies are now covering hearing aids through the Medicare supplemental plans, when they did not 5 years ago. I was also very happy that Artisan Hearing is a provider for most of the insurance companies that are providing these benefits.” ~ Gerry Green

fishing two rods at the same time, I will rig one with a bobber of some type. If you are new to ice fishing, it might be a good idea to use a bobber until you get the hang of feeling a strike without one. However, the main thing to remember is that the bobber should also be small or very sensitive to the slightest disturbance since the winter bite can often be very light, and a large bobber may not reveal that light hit. Well, we’ve had some pretty cold weather lately, and the ice is beginning to form again, so maybe in the not-toodistant future, we can be putting some of these thoughts in practice — I’m ready.

simply put, you should match your line size to the fish you are pursuing. For example, you don’t need 12-pound test line to catch panfish through the ice — in fact; you don’t need it anytime you are targeting panfish. I generally use a 2-4-pound test line; it’s harder for the fish to detect, and the lighter line is easier to detect the light hits that are common when ice fishing. Another item or piece of equipment that deserves a closer look is the bobber or “strike detector,” as it is known in the fly fishing business. I fish both methods through the ice; I generally don’t use a strike detector device since I prefer to “feel” the strike, but often when I’m

here is a very good explanation for those shattering sounds that have been heard of late throughout the valley. Perhaps not as high numbers as the daily COVID count we’ve been besieged with, but never-the-less many of those well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions that had been made two weeks ago have already been smashed or tossed to the wayside. Two years ago, one of my first January columns was written about resolutions, but more specifically, about how much more fun it is to make resolutions for others to make than it was to follow them ourselves.

At that time, I urged MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to resolve to revoke his stated plan to eliminate 42 existing Minor League Baseball teams across the country that included our very own Williamsport Crosscutters. That Webb Weekly issue must not have made its way to his doorstep. Still, even if it had, Manfred pressed ahead with his plan to deprive dozens of smaller communities across the land with the opportunity to root for the hometown team affiliated with one of MLB’s 30 Big League teams. In the end, even though the Phillies left Billtown, our community was able to

become one of the six sites for the inaugural MLB Draft League concept. Compared to what we had enjoyed for nearly 100 years prior, the Draft League was not quite the same. On the very positive side, we still had baseball Scott at Bowman Field, but Lowery the scheduling quirks and rule changes presented by the new league had some diehard baseball fans scratching their heads. Through it, all local fans can be thankful team ownership decided to keep Williamsport

in the baseball game. The Williamsport Crosscutters are owned by Cutting Edge Baseball, LLC, a division of Trinity Sports Holdings, named the Organization of the Year by Ballpark Digest in 2017. The group is headed by Peter Freund, who also owns and operates several professional sports teams and venues throughout North America and Europe. In addition to the Crosscutters, the company portfolio includes interests in the New York Yankees and Minor League Baseball’s Memphis Redbirds and Charleston RiverDogs. The Trinity Sports group also owns and operates the Memphis 901 FC playing in the United States Soccer League and Dagenham & Redbridge FC located in East London, part of England’s

community. He added new bleachers, LED lighting around the park and installed a fountain for kids to play in. Gartner would routinely walk around the park and carry baseballs to hand out to kids he encountered. When the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the 2020 Minor League Baseball season, unlike owners across the sport, he didn’t lay off or furlough his staff. Instead, he kept them employed during the work stoppage so they could get by. Last month Gartner’s group decided to sell the AAA team to Diamond Baseball Holdings, a subsidiary of Endeavor, a global sports and entertainment company. What he did following the sale clearly defines his character and why so many others held him in high esteem.

As one of his final acts before leaving, Gartner gathered all the team’s employees in a sports lounge at the ballpark. With a stack of envelopes in his hand, he told them he was going to hand them out all new business cards. But the envelopes didn’t contain business cards. Instead, a total of $600,000 his group had made from the sale of the team was given away to all 23 fulltime employees. Everyone, including the club’s custodian, received a check based on the number of years they had worked for the team. Every employee got $2,000 for every year they had been with the team, even as interns. The longest-tenured employee received a check for $70,000. Scott Sailor, the team’s former director of communications, explained the move “was

totally within his character. That’s the kind of guy he is.” Gartner and his ownership group didn’t give the gesture a second thought. “Those people really, really could use the money,” Gartner simply explained. “They’ve got mortgages. They’ve got little kids. Some of them probably have college debt and car payments. It helps them over humps. They’re really nice people, good people, and they deserve to share in proceeds from the sale.” It also goes to show that despite the perceived selfishness being exhibited by the current baseball labor dispute, the game has grown deep roots in the communities it serves. Like many of us have seen firsthand, it is indeed better to give than to receive.

National League. It is not a stretch to say that Freund’s knowledge, expertise, and influence were among the deciding factors in Williamsport’s inclusion in the new MLB Draft League. As 2021 drew to a close, employees of the AAA Iowa Cubs became firsthand recipients of the thoughtfulness of another team owner who had long endeared himself to the Des Moines community. In a recent article in the Des Moines Register, Tommy Birch detailed the generosity of former team owner Michael Gartner who led a group of associates to purchase the AAA farm team of the Chicago Cubs in 1999. Throughout his 22-year run of team leadership Gartner, now 83, was extremely popular among fans, employees, and the

appy New Year, kids. Trust all is well. Yes. I have been extremely busy of late. The basketball season is in full throttle. While the SJNRA Golden Knights are usually the topic of discussion. A few have asked if I am still fishing. Absolutely. I am not going to lie. I would rather talk about nymphing than entertain questions on why I don’t play a zone defense. Yes. My excursions are somewhat limited, but I did get a chance to throw a few casts over the holidays. Believe it

or not, this is my favorite time of year to head out. Usually, I am the only guy on the water, but I will occasionally run into a few of my chums. I spent a good three hours on Wednesday in the brisk elements. The fish were a tad sluggish, and I only managed to land one. It was a great afternoon. I took a few photos and recorded some footage. I am finishing up my introductory videos. “The Lycoming Creek Chronicles” are about to go live as I might have landed my first major sponsor. But I still have not heard from the County or the Visitor’s

Bureau. Maybe I should write them two letters a week. I mean, they can’t ignore me forever. Several bugs are still hatching, and throwing tiny bead-headed nymphs can be rewarding. Jamie quite Spencer Nymphs are tiny aquatic insects that are in their busy underwater stages. It is said that over 90 percent of a trout’s diet consists of the little critters. These types of bugs are effective on a yearround basis. But especially here in the Winter. Despite their small size, trout focus on these insects because of their abundance. Again, I am simply a bug chucking novice. I have only been at this since COVID. I still have a long way to go, but I am starting to understand it. My basic nymph setup consists of a 9-foot leader, and I add another 12 to 18 inches of tippet. At the very end, I tie my nymph. Some folks will add another section to the bend of the hook, but I normally stick with one bug. A split shot is added when needed. The amount of weight I use will vary. A lot depends on the speed and depth of the water. The key here is to use

enough weight to have your nymph bouncing along the bottom. Trout are now extremely sluggish, and they don’t need to work as hard. My placement of the strike indicator also depends, but as a general rule of thumb, it should be at one and a half times the depth. Always be sure that your presentation moves with the flow of the current. Your nymph should drift naturally. Pay close attention to your elements. The water is now crystal clear, and the fish will spook easy. Patience is so important. Throw a few casts upstream to practice. Think slow. Watch that indicator and focus on what happens. You should be able to tell the difference between a strike and brushing the bottom. When you see a sudden twitch or pause, simply raise your rod. Again. There is no need to set the hook like Jimmy Houston. This obviously takes time to master. It only requires a slight tug. Don’t get too excited and stay focused. This is much easier said than done. It will get better. Trust me. The Delayed Harvest section near Powy’s Curve is my personal favorite. I am up there all of the time. My lovely bride continues to call me a moron for heading out in the extreme. I don’t mind the cold. I had to get out. Fishing is my zen. And a few drifts is all that I need to recharge my batteries. I might go ice fishing soon. Cheers.
