MEET DR. SARAH SPENCER— READY TO PROVIDE YOUR BEST OB/GYN CARE
For some people, growing up on a farm and being interested in animal births on the place might lead to a career as a veterinarian For Sarah Spencer, D O , it led instead to helping bring human babies into the world as well as providing women with care for all aspects of their gynecological and obstetric health
Raised in Jonesville, Dr Spencer participated in the Jonesville High School band and showed horses through 4-H. Following graduation, she received her bachelor’s degree from Albion College and continued her education at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine From the outset, she knew that she wanted to pursue a specialty in obstetrics and gynecology a goal that did not change during her medical education.
Dr. Spencer completed her residency in OB/GYN at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in 2019 For three years, she practiced at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan
Dr. Danyelle O’Dell, another Jonesville native and former schoolmate who has been with Hillsdale Obstetrics & Gynecology since the fall of 2021, knew Dr Spencer in high school and contacted her about the possibility of joining the Hillsdale practice
Dr. Spencer enjoys the variety that her field offers: “I like that we spend some of the time in surgery and some in the office And babies are fun!” she adds with a laugh “Deliveries are always special.”
She takes satisfaction in being able to assess the problems her patients bring to her and then offering solutions and options that individualize care to each person. Her focus is both helping with the immediate situation and also finding solutions that will contribute to improving the overall quality of life for the women who come to see her. Dr. Spencer not only wants to provide help but, in addition, likes educating her patients about their conditions.
When asked what she finds challenging about her work, Dr Spencer said that persistent conditions which can be difficult to manage such as chronic pelvic pain and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) fall into that category “But if we can get a good treatment plan for patients, it’s really rewarding to get them feeling better I’m all about quality of life I use that to help people make decisions what option do they think will work best for them based on the different outcomes.”
For the future of obstetrics and gynecology in Hillsdale, she sees the strength of the practice growing as they continue to provide a personalized, patientfocused experience.
“A good team approach is already developing We’re working to make it patient-centered, especially for our obstetric patients. We want them to feel they have some autonomy and can make decisions on how they want their labor to be and what they
want to use for pain Giving people more personalized birth experiences is our goal while always making sure that we maintain patient safety ”
Dr Spencer recently moved back into the area and is settling in with her two cats and also has two aquariums. She is looking forward to summer and being able to spend some time boating and pursuing other lake activities.
