Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in both developed and developing countries. In Spain, nearly 30% of cancers diagnosed originate in the breasts. Nevertheless progress in treatment against this disease combined with campaigns encouraging early diagnosis have steadily increased recovery rates and improved disease prognosis.

On the one hand, medical advances have provided a growth in knowledge of the biology of the disease, with more pharmacological treatments targeted at each type of tumour. On the other, technological advancements have enabled increasingly accurate and safe radiotherapy. Together these have resulted in less aggressive but more effective personalised treatment.

HC Marbella's oncology centre, HC Cancer Centre, faces this disease on a daily basis. Its specialist breast cancer team, is made up of consultants from the different fields related to breasts: gynaecologists, radiologists, surgeons, oncologists and radiation specialists among others. They investigate and study each tumour from its roots and together plan the optimal treatment for each patient.

The first step in this fight begins with prevention and early diagnosis. From adolescence, all women should attend an annual gynaecological check-up to find out which preventative measures are most appropriate in their specific case. Mammograms are recommended from age 40, Tom synthesis, or 3D mammography, can detect very small lesions which would have previously been missed, increasing cancer detection by 40%. As a result, cancers are diagnosed at an early stage, significantly improving patient survival. Once cancer has been diagnosed, the Breast Unit team plan appropriate personalised treatment for each patient. This treatment plan will depend largely on the biology and behaviour of the tumour.

In the early stages, when the cancer is localised, surgery or radiotherapy is the usual treatment of choice. Currently, whenever the situation allows, conservative surgery is performed removing only the tumour with an adequate margin of safety. This conservative surgery is always complemented by radiotherapy to ensure better control of the disease. “The latest radiotherapy is more precise, conformal and safe, improving treatment tolerance whilst maintaining effectiveness,” explains Paula Sedano, Radiation Oncologist at HC Marbella.

In cases where systemic treatment is necessary, we evaluate the breast tumour subtype to deliver the most appropriate treatment.

“Genomic platforms are currently being developed which aim to establish the risk of relapse and survival in each type of tumour through a genetic study. These allow identification of whether or not additional treatment is required for each individual patient,” explains Dr Victor Navarro, Medical Oncologist at HC Cancer Centre.

Each treatment has its function and its timing, its coordination by a multidisciplinary team is therefore essential. As Dr Sedeno explains, “Our Breast Unit includes different specialists, they offer patients a complete service, including early diagnosis and treatment, guaranteeing the best treatment options, in the best environment and with the same familiar faces.”

Thanks to this progress in treatment and early diagnosis, she concludes, “We have managed to increase long-term survival rates and are one step closer to winning this battle.”

Florida Health Dept. Warning Against Covid-19 mRNA Vaccine

Florida Surgeon General Dr Joseph A. Ladapo has recommended against receiving mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, especially to males aged 18 to 39 as it increases the risk of cardiac-related death.

Florida emphasizes that health care providers review all data to evaluate risks and benefits unique to each patient when determining any health care services to provide, including the administration of COVID-19 vaccines containing Messenger RNA (mRNA) which both the PfizerBioNTech and the Moderna vaccines utilize.

Their analysis found there is an 84% increase in the relative incidence of cardiac-related death among males 18-39 years old within 28 days following mRNA vaccination.

Individuals with pre-existing cardiac conditions, such as myocarditis and pericarditis, should take particular caution when considering vaccination and discuss with their health care provider.

The State Surgeon General now recommends against the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines for males ages 18-39 years old. Individuals and health care providers should also be aware that this analysis found that Males over the age of 60 had a 10% increased risk of cardiac-related death within 28 days of mRNA vaccination.

“Today, we released an analysis on COVID-19 mRNA vaccines the public needs to be aware of,” he said. He added: “FL will not be silent on the truth.”

Non-mRNA vaccines were not found to have these increased risks among any population. Floridians are encouraged to discuss all the potential benefits and risks of receiving mRNA COVID-19 vaccines with their health care provider. The risk associated with mRNA vaccination should be weighed against the risk associated with COVID-19 infection. The Department continues to stand by its Guidance for Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccines issued March 2022, which recommends against use in healthy children and adolescents 5 years old to 17 years old. This now includes recommendations against COVID-19 vaccination among infants and children under 5 years old, which has since been issued under Emergency Use Authorization.

This raises some serious questions when in Europe and particularly in the UK there is no mention of this while the over 60’s are urged to get the vaccine, warning that the COVID 19 cases are surging. Why not the under 60s? Was it not the idea to get the young vaccinated with priority?

At the same time, the Office for National Statistics (ONS), shows that more people than usual have died this year and that a rise in “irregular heartbeat” deaths could (?) be the reason.

The department continues to stand by its Guidance for Pediatric COVID-19 Vaccines issued March 2022, which recommends against use in healthy children up to age 17.

About the Florida Department of Health The department, nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board, works to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts.
