In May 1880, Carl Benz astounded the world with the first internal combustion engine suitable for commercial use, followed in 1885 by what is recognised as the first automobile designed from the ground up. This event sparked the imagination of a number of inventors who embarked on their designs. And almost 111 years ago to the day, Henry Ford, the most successful of that bunch, launched the Model T, the first affordable mass-produced car in the world. The automobile industry is now experiencing a huge gear change, accelerated by the Volkswagen exhaust emissions scandal. More and more manufacturers are ditching the internal combustion engine, particularly the diesel, in favour of the electric motor. Some manufactures, noticeably Tesla, only produce all-electric vehicles. Volvo, one of the most recognised and respected names in the business, has announced that from this year, every car they make will have an electric motor on board, even if it’s a hybrid. How things have changed. Back in the day, you chose from a selection of saloons and maybe an estate car. Now we have compact, mini/compact SUV, crossover, SUV, cabriole, and so on. And instead of two engine choices, we now have four, namely, gas, diesel, hybrid and electric. Today’s car owner now has a rich and varied fleet to choose from, and in this edition of Motor Express, over 25 different vehicles are highlighted.
