The highest percentages of online consumers say products, services and companies should communicate via social networks once a month or less and once a week or less, according to an April 2011 study from ROI Research and Performics. Data from “SNet: A Study in Social Media Usage and Behavior indicates 28% of online consumers say social network communication should be conducted once a month or less, while 26% say once a week or less.

observing human behavior and acting human. They're also obsessed with tracking what customers are saying about their products and services and deciphering the meaning of those conversations on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and elsewhere.

As one website owner suggests: IP addresses belonging to Microsoft are requesting pages from eKstreme.com and blogSci.com (my science blog) with HTTP referrer headers suggesting that the hits were from live.com searches. These referrer headers are spoofed as the keywords from these supposed searches are sometimes in no way related to the requested page. Additionally, for most of the other supposed searches, the requested pages do not rank in the top 10 (first page of results) in a way to send this traffic.

Americans have in recent weeks become slightly less likely to say they are cutting back on their weekly spending, according to Gallup data. Gallup analysis suggests this means that actual consumer spending may increase as summer gets underway.

Do your messages tend to be a little self-centered? Many people fall into a rut of producing content that is only self-promoting and "salesy." This is the worst possible way to build an online community. Don't just drone on about how fantastic you or your company is it's not as reliable coming from you as when other people say it anyways. Instead, try providing your followers with educational, valuable and engaging content. People are going to be much more willing to share educational information than a self-promoting or "salesy" message. So go ahead and set a goal to start creating content worth sharing. Are you a repeat offender? Nobody wants to be bombarded with the same message over and over again. Repeatedly posting similar messages will not only prevent new people from following you, but you might see a drop in your fan base. In theory it might seem like a good idea to remind people of an important message or try to reach new people who may have missed your first posting, but really you are just spamming your followers. There are a few occasions, such as event promotion, when you need to send similar messages over a couple months to remind your followers. But this is the exception not the standard. Don't think you can "sneak repeat" content by folks - most of us will remember and not be pleased. Be original each and every day, and for those days when you can't be original, don't post. Are your messages a little text heavy? One of the best attributes of social media networks is that it provides snap shot views on the latest news. People tune into your social media channel for quick updates.$ For those days when you have content that won't fit in the 140 character Twitter message, put your content in a blog post. Once the blog is ready send a short message through your social media accounts to check out your blog post. A short and catchy title in your social media message will help capture the attention of your followers. To keep your social media profile pages from getting too text heavy we recommend posting videos, photos, or links to content with photos in the headlines. These photos and videos will help break up the text on your profile pages and give visitors a quick glance at what you and your company are about. Keep your messages short and sweet, and post images to add some personality to your profile page. $

Are you a social media spammer? We all have that friend who sends 10+ Facebook status updates a day. Don't become that friend or company that continuously spams its followers. Since there is no golden rule for the "appropriate" number of postings on social media accounts, it is recommended to check different sources to determine your optimal frequency. Here are a couple practices to find out what might work best for you. First, you can take a look at your competition and see how frequently they post and determine if they are building a good community with their schedule. Another idea is to research what people in the industry are saying about the recommended frequency on each platform. Recent studies have shown that people on Twitter expect to receive more updates than people on Facebook and that 5-10 Tweets a day is expected. Facebook is entirely different than Twitter when it comes to messaging frequency. With its current set-up it is pretty easy to tie up your Friend news feed with messages. So be respectful and try only posting Facebook updates a couple times a week up, or up to once a day. Lastly, try asking your loyal followers what they think about your social media communications. Do they feel like they could use more information or less? A blend of all these techniques above should help you find the right amount of frequency for sending messages on your social media platforms. $

One of the best ways to help promote yourself and your knowledge is to establish yourself as an expert. $ If you can do it successfully, then you can have people $ seek you out to learn more about what you know. The pinnacle of which occurs when the mainstream media begins to come to you for $ information. The problem is that countless other people $ are also trying to set themselves up as experts too. $

In order to establish yourself as an expert you need to first $share your expertise with the world. This can be done through a blog, website, writing articles, or $ countless other avenues. What matters most is that you get yourself in front of people as much as $ possible. This doesn't mean using the same work over and $ over; it means putting out as many unique works as you can. The more of your information that's out $ there, the more likely someone will find it and use it.

In most cases the act of promoting your work will require a lot more time and effort than writing it ever did. The nice thing is that once you have a following, then all subsequent information you present will automatically be received by those people. They may even be willing to share it with others and help you build an even bigger following. As long as you don't jeopardize yourself, and you have people talking about your work, your following will hopefully grow bigger and bigger.

$

It isn't the process of writing or proving information $ that makes you an expert. It's the act of other people using and sharing it that makes you an expert. This is $ why almost every expert you see on TV and in the News all have "best-selling books". Since other people $ are buying their books, it means they are using their knowledge - and thus the author is $ considered an expert. $

Sadly, this doesn't mean that their information and knowledge is accurate or correct. In many fields and $ genres the information available is "open for interpretation" or "subject to personal opinion". When $ that happens, there will be a vast amount of $ discrepancy between what one expert presents and another. For this reason it's important to realize that $ have more knowledge and information that you can others in the same field, and still not be seen as an expert. This usually happens because the people using the information "like" or "agree with" the information the other expert presents more.

Contrary to popular belief, establishing your expertise requires a lot more work than just writing or sharing what you know. That is the foundation from which your expert status will grow; however, without the ability to put your work in front of people it will just sit there. If people aren't interested in what you know or have to say, then you will not be able to become an expert either. After all, it's the act of people using and sharing your knowledge that makes you an expert - not how much you know. What you need to do to get people involved like that is the hardest part of becoming an expert.

Miles Baker took the center stage this week on Wayne Liew Dot Com Entrepreneur Interviews segment. Miles is an affiliate marketer but unlike average ones, he is able to build a business model around affiliate marketing successfully.

! !

Miles caught my attention in an interview that he did with Andrew Wee. With the help of Twitter, again, I am able to connect with him. He is a very kind person and in fact, despite his experience and authority in the field, he is willing to help and share his tips with new affiliates and Internet marketers. In this interview, Miles Baker provided a lot of golden nuggets on how affiliate marketers like me can take their business to the next level, why you should work prior to becoming your own boss and the mindset required for success in business as well as in your life.

"##!!/)0!'3(!(2N(,'! ! Miles: Sure. My name is Miles Baker. I work from my home office in beautiful Fort Collins, Colorado USA. I’ve been marketing and making money online for over 10 years and I’ve been doing it full-time for about 7 or 8 years now.

! ! ! ! !

Miles: Currently I have two businesses. One is involved with affiliate marketing and search engine optimization where I develop and market web properties to promote affiliate products. The other company I am involved with does software and product development. Miles: I’m also author a blog at www.MarketingWithMiles.com which I’ve been doing for about 3 years now which is all about Internet marketing. In addition to that I’m involved with various social marketing projects and other various things on the side.

! !

Wayne: It is always great to hear from another entrepreneur who is in the same industry as I am. Miles, how did you discover affiliate marketing or Internet marketing in general as a business or a way to generate income? Miles: About 10 years ago I started playing around online trying to figure out how to make money. I tried various programs, MLM schemes, bought many ebooks, etc. Eventually I came across a program with a company named ClickBank. They were an affiliate network and I signed up for one of their programs. Miles: However I didn’t find any success with it. It wasn’t until a few years later that something I did years prior generated a small check for me and that’s what got me started. The check I received made it real to me, so at that point I started researching and learning more.

! !

Wayne: Interesting. It was a check for less than $10, right?

!

Miles: Correct, it was for $7 and some change and at first I didn’t even remember who ClickBank was or why I got the check. I did some research and connected the dots that it was for a program I had signed up for a few years before. Miles: The thing that triggered with me was that I earned that money while I was doing something else, passive income basically. That and the fact it was a real check that cleared the bank made it real and more possible in my mind that I could actually make money online.

!

Wayne: Prior to running your affiliate marketing business, do you have a 9-to-5 kind of job?

!

Miles: Yes, prior to affiliate marketing I had all kinds of various jobs. Selling hot tubs, working in a night club, traveling salesman. I also did tech support for a few companies like Apple and HP and although I wasn’t an expert by any means it helped me understand computers and the Internet.

!

!

!

Wayne: Compare your current venture to that, what are some of the significant differences in terms lifestyle, work

schedule and dedication required? I mean, is running your own business harder or easier as compared to a 9-to-5? Miles: It incomparable. Having my own business and working from my home allows me ultimate flexibility and so much more. For example I have a 2 1/2 year old son and I am able to spend so much time with him, last week I spent the entire week with him and worked very little. Miles: In addition to that I run the show, I make the decisions, and I’m only responsible to myself. I currently have a few employees which allows me even greater freedoms because they stay productive even if I’m busy with something personal. Miles: The lifestyle isn’t just about the money, it’s about convenience, flexibility, and time. I would have to say it’s the best "job" I could have. I guess that’s why I’ve been doing it for so long. Currently I work about 30 to 40 hours per week. I’m also very dedicated and work extra hours if I have to.

! ! !

Wayne: But I don’t mind working long hours if I am doing what I love. There will be a group of young aspiring entrepreneurs who are still in high school or college like me reading this interview. Of course, I need your advice on this as well. In your opinion, is it necessary for us to work for others before launching our own venture?

!

Miles: It’s not necessary, however everyone is different so for some it may be beneficial because they haven’t developed the required mindset or motivation to do their own venture. However, I know some young people who have the determination and focus to succeed and they are very successful. Miles: I think it’s a natural process and if you don’t have the skills, determination, discipline, or focus to start your own venture you’ll end up working for someone else anyway and perhaps you’ll learn those skills eventually and start your own venture later. It obviously never hurts to learn from and work for someone else.

! !

Wayne: I can definitely agree on the fact that having a job can help us in developing the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to start a business. Can you tell us briefly what are the benefits, lessons or knowledge that we can get by working for someone before starting out on our own?

!

Miles: Skills would be a big one. Anything related to your industry that you can learn about while you’re getting paid is beneficial. For me, being able to do basic tech support for various companies taught me a lot about computers and the Internet which I was able to later utilize in my business. In addition, the sales and people skills I learned help me to this day. Miles: Basically, working for someone else is good if you’re always learning something. In addition, if you can find successful people to work for and model then that’s a big help because you’ll be able to take on some of their good and successful habits.

! !

Wayne: I don’t know whether it is because of all the flashy looking work at home opportunity ads or something else but people seem to think that working from home or making money online is easy. Do you think that it is easy to run an affiliate marketing business?

!

Miles: It’s easy because I love it, but it requires a lot of work. I don’t try to create obstacles for myself by labeling anything as hard, some things just requires a lot of time and effort. Affiliate marketing requires a lot of time and effort so you must be committed. Unfortunately people get the idea it should be easy because so many ads make it sound like it will be. However, it’s not that "hard" really, it just requires persistence and commitment as well as some common business sense.

!

Wayne: There are a lot of folks who are dipping their toes into the world of Internet marketing and affiliate marketing but not many are really successful. What are the major factors that are pulling these people back? By not being persistent enough?

!

WMM 19

!

"##!!/)0!'3(!(2N(,'!

!

Miles: Focus, belief, mindset. I would say many people have limiting beliefs about what they’re capable of. People will quit too soon because they have too much doubt. People also just don’t see themselves as successful. "You’ll never rise above the level of your vision." is one of my favorite quotes. Other than that, bad habits such as laziness or distractions can hold you back. You have to be focused, committed, and believe it’s possible.

!

Wayne: Definitely some good advice there. Some affiliate look at their commissions as side income or extra pocket money while affiliate marketing is a business for you. What is the main difference between running an affiliate marketing business and doing affiliate marketing as a hobby?

!

Miles: I guess it just depends on what you want to get out of it. My goal was to start my own online business, that was always my intended outcome. I worked a job and did affiliate marketing on the side, however having my own business on the Internet was the main direction I wanted to head in.

! !

Miles: Some people love their jobs and just want to supplement their income with affiliate marketing which I think is great too. I think it all just depends on what kind of lifestyle you want and want you want to do for a living. So I would say the main difference really is just your commitment level and what you really want to get out of it.

!

Wayne: If a complete newbie comes to you for advice on how to get the ball rolling with affiliate marketing, what will be your Top 3 suggestions? You can always recommend some resources if you want to. Miles: First, I would have that person take a look at themselves. Analyze their strengths and weaknesses. Are they disciplined? Are they truly committed? Are they being at all realistic in actually following through? Then truly figure out what qualities of themselves they should focus on improving as well as create some goals for themselves. Create a goal that is achievable that motivates them and excites them that they can move towards. That would be my first suggestion. Miles: Secondly, I would recommend they start reading and learning as much as they can. In addition, start reaching out and connecting with people in the industry, either through forums, Twitter, blogs, and if you can attend industry events. Connecting and meeting people really helps a lot and will give you lots of options and resources. Miles: Thirdly, after you’ve learned a bit in general I would try to focus on only ONE main method of affiliate marketing, whether it be Pay Per Click, CPA Advertising, SEO, creating a blog in a niche, creating a product and being a vendor. Focus on one area and try to become an expert in that area.

! ! ! !

Wayne: Great! For me, I prefer SEO and building affiliate sites rather than doing PPC. Like what you’ve said, it is always good to just focus on a few rather than spreading ourselves all over the place. Miles, I am sure that people will benefit a lot from the tips and advice that you gave throughout this interview, especially on the mindset required for success. Before we end this, any last words that you would like to say to my blog readers?

!

Miles: Well, take the example of Wayne, he’s a hardworking young man, who is committed and I can tell is finding great success online. It doesn’t matter so much as your skill, age, or background, as much as your willingness to learn, stay committed, and put in the required work to find success online. Miles: If anyone wants to reach out and connect with me they can contact me through my website at MarketingWithMiles.com I hope you enjoyed the interview. Thanks!

! !

Wayne: Thanks for the complements. I’m sure that they can get in touch via Twitter as well, right? Miles: Yes, @MilesBaker. Wayne: There you have it folks. Miles Baker, affiliate marketer and Internet entrepreneur. Thanks again for doing this interview with me. Miles: Sure, thanks for having me. $

People are constantly talking about getting leads and creating a list for your business. What they don't talk about is how to do those things. The best way, by far, is a little know secret called article marketing. Many involved with multi-level marketing spend too much time chasing family and friends and becoming frustrated in the process. This is why many end up failing. However, with article marketing you can generate free traffic and build tons of backlinks to your site. Now, your two main problems of getting leads and creating a list in the internet business are solved.

!

You can also utilize places like Squidoo and build lenses with backlinks to your website. If you have a favorite forum that revolves around the business then use the signature link area to your advantage. Don't forget about places like Facebook and Twitter either, because your link could go viral with the right approach. Again, taking the time to write articles or even blog posts is very time consuming. Building a multi-level marketing business can happen a lot faster if you utilize the right tools along the way. It's also a neverending process, so you need something that is more effective and convenient.

!

! !

WHAT ARE BACKLINKS?

!

If you're not familiar with backlinks, they are simply links in other areas of the Internet that can redirect people to your website. Search engines like Google love backlinks, because they usually mean your website is more relevant with the information it provide.

! !

There has always been a debate as to whether or not you should get as many backlinks as possible or only choose quality choices. We recommend looking into the latter, because 50 quality backlinks can provide better rankings than 1000 of them. In the end, it means less work for you and better conversion potential for your MLM business.

! !

!WHERE CAN YOU PLACE BACKLINKS?

!

While article marketing allows you to get backlinks from various article directories like EzineArticles, GoArticles, or iSnare, there are plenty of other places to put them. One of the most well-known areas is through social bookmarking. You've probably heard of Digg, Technorati, or even Reddit, and they all provide

ENTER ONLYWIRE If you have a WordPress setup for your site (which we recommend), OnlyWire can provide you with traffic overnight. It's a plugin offered by WordPress that syndicates your blog posts to over 20 social networking sites. Best of all, this is done simultaneously. When you take this approach to your MLM business, it gives you an opportunity to build backlinks faster and increase your search engine index speed. Fresh and up to date content added in with the OnlyWire plugin can turn a starter business into one that looks like it has been online for years.

SAVING TIME What it comes down to is, if you don't use a tool like OnlyWire for your article marketing, there will be time constraints. You have to login to every site, submit the articles or posts yourself, which literally takes hours. Being able to have 20 backlinks created in a flash is a huge benefit. Another thing to understand about the OnlyWire concept is its ability to utilize the top resource sites out there. You can rest assured that these posts are going to the best social sites so your MLM business will be able to prosper at a faster rate. It's definitely something you should strongly consider adding to your repertoire of Internet marketing tools. In closing, not only is Article Marketing effective, it is FREE. The only thing required on your part is a little bit of hard work, persistence and patience. Once you post an article, it is there for the viewing audience of the whole wide web to see and take advantage of. You are now in a position to get traffic and customers for years to come off one article.$$ $

Cheap Articles Produce ! Cheap Results ! =4>$12*234$!.552*$ ! ! ! ! ! You see it every day advertised in the sponsored section of Google search results as well as in the advertisements of magazines – “Buy Cheap Articles!” The words scream out the phrase that you are going to get a ton of great content and you are not going to have to pay very much for it!Wow, it sounds like there really is a such thing as a free lunch (almost, at least). Now that I have your hopes up and have your attention, I must tell you that cheap articles produce cheap results. Let’s dive further into this notion of why you don’t get an almost free lunch by buying a ton of cheap articles from a non-professional.

! ! ! ! ! ! !

1

WHAT DO CHEAP ARTICLES SAY ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS?

It seems so obvious when you take the time to think about it. Cheap articles say you’re a cheap business. Cheap articles do not distinguish you from your competition. Let’s say you have 100,000 businesses competing against you and your articles and content reflect content that is only better than 50% of your competition. Now, you rank about 50,000 out of 100,000 against other businesses who want to do businesses with your customers. Due to your cheap content, you will not be selected as a prospective company to do business with.

WMM 23

2 !

WHAT DO SEARCH ENGINES THINK ABOUT CHEAP ARTICLES?

!

Search engines do not know what you pay for articles nor do they care. However, search engines do care about the QUALITY, UNIQUENESS, and RELEVANCY of the content that your website or blogpossesses. Companies that offer cheap articles are making money off you andpaying someone else about 75% of what you paid them (if that much). Keeping in mind the context above, your article / content is only about in the top 50% of your competition so, let’s say Google gives you the benefit of the doubt and gives you a search engine spot of 5,000 out of 100,000 results. How many people go to that page and buy from the person on the 500th page of thesearch engines?

! ! !

AREN’T THERE SOME GOOD COMPANIES THAT OFFER CHEAP ARTICLES?

Really? Sounds like you are sold on it already. Buy it, waste your money, and then find someone professional who will do one heck of a job for you! I’m not saying you have to pay an arm and a leg for good quality content but, you are going to have to hand over decent dollars to get decent articles and content. The reason the subject has to be addressed so harshly is that so many people are trying

to get something for nothing and once there are thousands of people buying articles that are cheap that waste their money and find out later. If you want to take an extreme problem to the next level, I have heard of people buying an article for very little money and then finding out later that the content was stolen from another website or business! Thelegal liability will fall on the article writer eventually but you are the one that is going to have to pay for the mess in the short term and maybe eventually in the long term if you cannot prove your case when the article company disappears off the worldwide web! $

LET’S LEARN FROM OTHER’S MISTAKES Write your own high quality articles or hire a professional article writing or content development company to put together your content and articles for your business. Check their website to see if they have examples of their writing quality to verify that they really have the capability to write the way they say they have the ability to. A lot of websites are out to make a quick sale, make you buy into the nonsense, and then sell you a quick sale. When buying an article or content, make certain that the company talks about their dedication to content quality, relevancy, and uniqueness. The purpose of this article is to tell you that if you are buying articles for little to nothing, that is the first indication that you are at a website or businessthat you need to move away from. Take the time to develop your business the right way. Build your business with only quality content and quality writing. Distinguish yourself from the competition. Success is only for those who distinguish themselves from the competition and penetrate their business message to their target market.

We all know the statistics surrounding startup business ventures, and it seems that online things are no different. If you're truly serious about building yourself a stable online business, you have no choice but to invest your time (and yes some money) building that business. And as with any business, effort is always required. However, an online business has several real advantages. The low cost of entry is one, the ability to easily test is another. There's really little to stop you setting up and trying various online ventures with only a modest financial outlay, and of course your time. but compare this to say a franchise costing several thousand's before you even start to see a return and then there is premises, deposits, lease fees, solicitors fees etc... But still many complain about getting started creating an online income. Let's get things in perspective, the fact is that almost anyone can start an online business and earn money online; you just need to be willing to put in the time and effort... The simple truth is that many are not.

But here's the thing... working hard doesn't always guarantee success, the internet vast, and if you're thinking of setting up a single site and then sitting back waiting for the cash to roll in, great... I have a lovely seaside property in the Sahara you may be interested in! But seriously, to create a successful online income you have to appreciate scale. One website is simply not enough, unless it's a really big one! Having a single site and doing all your submissions etc, manually is like trying to empty a bath with a spoon, many spoons are better... perhaps not the greatest analogy, but I think you see where I'm going with this, making an online income is about scaling up. And this is why so many go wrong, because trying to cope with all this manually can really eat away at your time, energy and enthusiasm. The answer is really quite simple... automate! If you haven't thought about it yet now is the time. There truly won't be a better time for you to start on the road to creating your own online income and to do this you really need to think about scale, and this requires automation. Your goal should be to automate as much of the online process as possible, without compromising on quality or originality. Doing everything by hand is simply outdated, and to be honest not the way the internet is designed. Large companies like Google don't look at your website with human eyes and decide how to rank you; that would be impossible, do the math...it's all automated. To succeed and earn money online, you need to be automating the process. Use software to do the mundane tasks and free you up to use your time to create more money making websites...and create yourself an outstanding online income.

The salesperson's fear that she will not do well, or that she will not be well thought of, is her greatest pitfall, and yet this is an obstacle that exists nowhere but in her own mind.

The person who succeeds in banishing fear from her life is the coming genius, and she who relieves other people of fear is a liberator of people. Fear is the destroyer of health, personality, and success. It is an imaginary evil, and it has brought despair to the past, falls like a curse on the present. It is the ghost of the$ weak, is a source of anxiety to the strong; and yet, if we only knew it, it is as devoid of power. Eliminate fear from your life, and money, power and success will dawn upon you. How strange that an imaginary evil has destroyed the equilibrium of the world. People in every country of the world are hypnotized by fear; afraid to undertake a business venture for fear they won't make it go. People fear they will take cold, and they take cold. They fear they will be$

sick, and they are sick. Sometimes they are afraid they are not well thought of, and that perhaps is as great a fear as any. People are afraid they are not going to own as much as someone else. The fear of failure is upon them, and the fear of failure produces failure. The person who makes money the most easily is the one who is not anxious to the point of insanity. Why should a salesperson fear when she has something she knows people need, something that will benefit and bless humanity? It is contrary to every law of progress. Some salespeople are constantly apologizing to themselves because they believe people are looking down on them, when in reality no one takes the trouble to think of them at all. They themselves are doing all the looking down. Such a feeling ruins a person for good work, injures his health, and dwarfs his personality. It makes a mere excuse out of what might have been a great person. It is an indication of weakness. This false idea prevails in every walk of life. Even in our schools there is always someone in the class who is ashamed to ask a question because he doesn't want people to know that he isn't informed.

There are many avenues that a person can utilize when working from home and building a business of their own.

Here are some ideas of getting yourself out there to get noticed:

• Newspapers (classifieds, notices, or maybe your local paper will do an article on you)

• Business Cards (place them at stores, post offices, church, gyms,

I find it a little heartbreaking when I talk to other people that have been working from home for quite some time and they get frustrated that they are not doing as well as they thought they would. There are hundreds and hundreds of home businesses out there these days and when I visit website forums or message boards, it amazes me of how many people don't know what to do once they got started with a business that they were so excited about. You really need to have the mindset as if that business that you just started was down the block on the corner. How is anyone going to know that you are there and what you do or what products or services that you have to offer? Just having a sign out front is not going to be enough for people to know that you exist. I have often heard even if someone reads your sign one time, it's not always going to be something that sticks with them. Statistics show that someone needs to see your sign, or your ad or any other form of advertisement up to 7 times before it becomes locked into their memory. If commercials only played one time, how many would you remember?

If you are looking for top internet businesses that you can consider starting online, then you should do some prior research before taking the plunge. Some businesses require you to do very little work but make a decent income, and others require more work but reap a greater return in the long run. There are many top internet businesses out there that you can start, so you ought to make your decision only after some careful thought. This article will give you a starting point to begin with.

! !

Here are, in my view, 3 of the top internet businesses you can begin: BUSINESS #1: INFORMATION PRODUCTS

!

Selling information products online has become the hot trend in the last couple of years. Many people have caught on to the ease and benefits of selling their own information products on the Internet. These products are generally digital in nature, such as e-books, video courses, podcasts and a combination of two or three of those types. They are easy and low-cost to produce, but produce amazing profit returns. Moreover, you can sell them over and over again without producing new copies and there are no shipping hassles to deal with.

! !

BUSINESS #2: PHYSICAL PRODUCTS

!

Selling physical products used to be more popular before the rise of information products online. It still is very profitable to sell physical products though, as these products can be more well-known to the public. Because they tend to be more mainstream, it is easier to sell these products without much pre-selling. Selling your own products on eBay or on your own online store are options you can consider.

! !

BUSINESS #3: AFFILIATE MARKETING By far, the easiest internet business to start online is affiliate marketing. In a nutshell, you promote someone else's product for a commission. Whenever you make sales or refer a lead, you get paid, depending on the structure of the affiliate program. With this business model, you don't need to spend enormous amounts of time creating a product, writing sales copy or providing customer service. You just need to promote your affiliate link.

! !

Which Internet business would I recommend for a rank newbie? Well, I would recommend affiliate marketing as it requires the least investment and it has the shortest learning curve. It is where many successful online business owners (including myself) cut their teeth. However, if you are more ambitious, you can start off with one of the other top internet businesses that have been proven to bring in the big bucks when done right.

If there are certain circumstances that are keeping your from maintaining a day job, then the best thing that you can do is to look into the various work from home ideas that you may use to gain regular income. Here are some ideas that you may use to make your search more productive, all of which will make looking for the bet work-from-home job that will suit you best.

! !

For one, keep in mind that legitimate work from home ideas will not need you to shell out even a single dollar on investments. If the online company that you are planning to join is requiring you to invest a certain amount, then there is a great chance that it is a scam. See to it that you steer clear from companies like this, and that you limit your choices to reputable companies that have already placed the requisite number of years in the field. Even better, do everything that you can to alert the authorities about the scammers and save other people from falling prey to their traps.

! ! !

Online jobs will only be lucrative for you if they are right up your alley. With this said, it is imperative that you limit your choices to projects that will allow you to harness the different skills and talents that you have. There are bound to be projects that will work well for you. All you would have to do is to find them. Worry not for all the work will pay off once you find the place that you will enjoy and will make a lot of money from.

! !

You can do these jobs right in your own home. You will be able to enjoy more leisure time with your family and friends now that you have more time to spare. Plus, you can also do this as a part-time job for students for extra income.

! !

Finally, see to it that you do the proper amount of research about the job and the online company that you are planning to join, especially if you are planning to use the work from home ideas that you found as your main sources of income. Make sure that you deal only with companies that have good reputations and that are known to deliver their side of the bargain. This will surely take a certain amount of time and effort, but going through all the work will be better than settling for the first company that you find and being disappointed in the end.

What

is

Your

Time

Worth?

As a business person you need to learn to value your time. There is no such thing as free time. There is only time. Free time is that which you haven't allocated anything to. Leisure time is that which you choose to spend doing something that you enjoy but even that actually has a cost. You should consider how much one hour of your life is worth and how much you would like it to be worth when you reach your ultimate goals of being successful and achieving your ideal income. Look at the disparity between what you can earn or are earning now and what you would like to be earning in the future. You need to create a solid plan to close that gap and start to approach your desired goals. Time can't be stored up and got back. Once it's gone, it's gone, so make the very most of every spare moment of your day. Avoid watching that tedious soap opera or that reality show. Concentrate on achieving your goals, whatever they may be.

! ! ! ! ! !

Up Your Game And Tighten Your Focus.

!

Because a properly run internet business is actually very complex when it is broken down and analysed and there are so many niches out there that you could apply this model to, you should aim to focus on one niche at a time. Tighten your focus and develop a strategy for how you are going to achieve your goals within that one niche and maybe come to dominate it. Develop an excellent product funnel for that niche, with an associated automated system to market it so that you can achieve an avalanche of cross sells, up sells and back end opportunities to profit from your customers. If you haven't done this once, how can you hope to achieve it in a whole bundle of niches? Get realistic and get focussed.

! ! ! !

Why Outsourcing Is Essential (For Serious Businesses). Once you have decided on your target niche and have got your head and your business plan in order, you need to start to create scalability in your business and leverage your own time accordingly. Work smart, not hard. This can be achieved by creating your new power team and this is the essence of outsourcing. Let's be honest, you can't do everything that needs to be done in your business on your own (there aren't enough hours in the day) so you need to outsource specific recurrent tasks in your business. Don't select your outsourced agent by price criteria alone.$

!

Instead look to build an employee-client business relationship with an agent who delivers quality on projects that you specify, with minimal hassle, over time.

What

Are

You

Actually

Doing?

At the same time, you have to look at what processes your business needs to perform if it is to achieve its goals. You need to define and describe them in a simple way. Consider using a graphical format for clarity. An old saying states that "If you can't break what you are doing down into the simple steps of a process, you don't know what you're doing"! I can only agree with that and once you have created a few of these process sheets you will appreciate the value of the exercise as it gives you a clear view of exactly what you are doing and who is responsible for each stage. In this way, you will start to become a project manager, which is what you need to be if you are to create a proper profitable business and create the profits that you really desire without working every hour of the day.

Analyse and Adapt. The last step is to measure the performance of your business. Anything that can be measured can be improved. Measure and Modify. How you measure your achievements is up to you and there are many ways to do so. Make your goals clear and easily measurable so that you are able to simply analyse the performance of the individual processes and their component steps within your business. There is also the opportunity to analyse the performance of your website and marketing tools online using software and some of the best is actually freely available online. This can be difficult to set up in some respects and can take a fair bit of effort to learn so you may want to consider outsourcing your tracking and analysis work in the early days. Either way, this will become an essential aspect of your business strategy and you should give it the proper attention.

For anyone that may not know about the possibility of being paid to write online; it is actually possible to get paid to write. But the advantages of online writing jobs are quite more than just the cash. I am actually a freelance writer coupled with many other things that I am. And I have come to see that writing online have more advantages than just the money. Below, I will list some of the advantages that I have discovered about writing online.

! ! ! ! !

3. It builds your intellect. Because of the little research that you may have to do with different online writing jobs you will certainly be engaging your brain more. This will no doubt help to build your intellectual capacity. 4. It improves your writing skills. This advantage is also indirectly related to the cash advantage. The reason for this is that the more you write online, the more you become a better writer. And the better you are at writing, the more costly you will become in being employed as a writer. This simply means MORE CASH.

$

!

1. You can earn money with it. This is the first advantage and I know you were expecting it to be my number one advantage. So I will not disappoint you but there is more.

! !

2. It makes you vast. It is not every topic that you are told to write about that you will actually know something about. This means that before you can write some articles you will need to do a little research. With this research you will be gaining more knowledge than you had and this will also mean that you will know more about a lot that you may never have known.$

! !

5. It makes you more informed. A writer that once only knew about the use of English may now know something in virtually every field. He may now know an extra thing or two about health, online business, affiliate marketing, management, law, politics etc. This to me is one of the greatest advantages of online writing job. These are to me some of the major advantages of online writing jobs. And as you have seen there is more to it than just money. I should also add here that the experience and knowledge that you gain from online writing jobs are yours to keep. They can never be lost or taking from you. This to me is true value and I am not saying this because I am being paid to write online.

Q: In the unlikely event that anyone reading this doesn't know who you are, can you tell us a bit about yourself and what you're currently doing, workwise? A: The short version is that I'm a twenty-five year old SEO consultant, relatively fresh off the boat from the United States, living in London. I began my career in SEO at SEOmoz in Seattle and I now work for Ayima Search Marketing here in the UK. I'm 100% organic-SEO focused (PPC sounds like something people take at the club around the corner from $ flat) and I'd far rather chase down a stellar link profile than attempt to converse with people and my engage in the "conversation". The technical aspects of SEO interest me far more than the social, which is odd since the social side was what I first worked on. Q: Your entry into the world of SEOmoz is a fascinating story. Can you tell us a bit about how you came to work at Ayima? A: My road to working at SEOmoz was literally the result of replying to a job listing on Craigslist that wanted a junior SEO, experience not a factor. I almost didn't click on the ad: it was about midnight and I'd been replying to job ads for hours. The title of the ad, however, was "Do you use your powers for good or for awesome", a Homestar Runner reference, and I couldn't really go past that, even though I wanted to go to sleep. I read the job description and decided it sounded like something I could do. I was always meticulous with cover letters and resumes, so I was up for another few hours making sure the application was right. Three interviews, a public blogging contest and a lot of hoping later, I had the job. I came to work at Ayima after deciding to leave Seattle in the winter of 2008. It was time for a lot of changes, and Rob Kerry and I basically came to the conclusion that me moving to work at Ayima might work. It turned out that Rob's partners at Ayima weren't adverse to the idea either. It took me exactly a month from deciding to move to leaving Seattle. I've actually been in the UK for seven months today. $ $

WMM 45 Q: What is your role at Ayima? A: I'm a search marketing consultant, meaning that I work almost exclusively on client-facing projects, managing / completing both on and off site work. We focus on traditional organic SEO. I love this. There is so much less bullshit in SEO than there is in this buzzy world of back-patting called social media. I can't even stand the term anymore. It makes me wince, it's such a fluffy catch-phrase.

!

Q: Describe a typical day for you. Leave out the part about living near my favorite pub please. No one likes a braggart. A: I get up at 4:50am and run six miles. I do this at this time because I like to run in an area of London that is packed with morning commuters come 6:30 or 7am. If I get this done before the day really begins, I also get to take another nap before work. I live very close to Ayima's Clerkenwell office: it takes me less than five minutes to walk to work. I unfortunately have to sit next to Dean all day, which results in a constant battle as to whose computer / keys / mobile phone / glass of water is on whose section of the desk. It's making for an incredibly hostile work environment ;) As oppposed to when I worked in Seattle, all of my clients are based in the London area, so I travel across town for meetings far more now than I did in Seattle. However, it's still pretty much your standard nine-to-five day. After fighting off requests to go to the pub after work (unless it's Friday, at which point it's game on), I go swimming after work at a pool five minutes in the other direction from where I live. I'll be there for a couple of hours, go home, eat dinner, maybe do some contract work and go to bed. It sounds like a lot of activity and not much downtown, but it makes me happy and I have learned in the last seven months that it's very necessary to do things that make you happy, even if they involve constant activity. Q: You've done a lot over the past few months... moved from Seattle to London, moved from working at SEOmoz to working at Ayima, etc. How have all these changes affected your perception of the industry? Have you seen that there are any notable differences between the US and the UK? A: I do notice the difference in culture between having consultants and companies spread over a huge country, and having a lot of them in a select few towns. If there is competition for a contract, you likely know the other companies pitching for it. You likely know the people who worked with a client before you did, and you likely know who's doing the SEO for your clients' competitors. This presented the UK industry with the option to become very nasty and childish, or for its members to develop a mature level of mutual respect for each other. Due to the calibre of people we have working over here, the vast majority chose the second option. Business is business and a LondonSEO piss-up, a birthday party, a dinner date with industry friends or whatever, is just that. That isn't to say that nastiness doesn't occur, but it appears to be less of a problem than it can be elsewhere. The practice of SEO isn't terribly much different, although of course you need to put yourself through a crash course in a country's culture when you arrive in it to practice marketing. Imagine walking into a meeting about getting some entertainment-niche website ranking, but never having seen the magazine or television show or pop group that they're most interested in at that time. I had to learn a lot fast about a myriad of small cultural nuances of British society. You don't know what you know about a place until you're required to use it in everyday marketing decision making. On the flip side, I come in handy when United States culture needs to be referenced, as I lived there for seven years. Q: In addition to all of this, you're also an amazing swimmer and you've recently gotten back into it on a fairly big level it seems. That seems to be a very competitive sport. Notice any similarities between it and the SEO industry? A: There are certainly some, but the differences are becoming more interesting. In SEO, all of our work relies on a third party--usually Google--agreeing that that work was worthwhile. In swimming, standards are made a lot clearer than they are in search. If you have a qualifying time you must meet, you know what that time is before you attempt to achieve it. Rarely (although it does happen) does someone decide after the fact whether your work or performance was good enough. I like the differences more than the similarities, in fact. SEO is a bit of a cat-andmouse game where we're always trying to be one step ahead of a third party. That's fun. In swimming, the responsibility for a positive outcome is far more within my control, especially now that my attitude towards it is so different to what it was when I was younger. I used to swim for a range of reasons: to get out of my town in New Zealand and to the US, to pay for college, and sometimes because I didn't value myself terribly much if it wasn't backed up by some achievement in a pool. Now, I truly do it because I want to. There is no other motivation, and that has been very freeing. $

Q: You and I have talked privately about the current trend of bully blogging. What are your thoughts on that? Is it becoming fashionable to establish yourself in the industry by being mouthy? Sometimes I think some people never got out of high school when I see the fights on Twitter.

!

A: There is currently a false perception in this industry that it's okay to badmouth people directly, and that if you do not agree with the loudest bloggers, they could end you in one way or another. This perception has been created entirely by the bloggers themselves. A few of them actually find it acceptable to call people whores, fat, ugly, and a range of insults on Twitter and on their websites. The worst (best?) example of this is someone who literally went on a mission to destroy the reputation of a woman he'd apparently never met. It stuns me that collectively, we don't turn around and say "You are acting in an objectionable, horrible way. We don't tolerate that sort of behaviour, let alone celebrate those who engage in it." And these same people are asked to speak at conferences and are heralded as industry leaders.

! !

I used to blog fairly often, but I do not believe I engaged in the nasty bullying that passes for 'snark' and wit right now. If I did, I have definitely learned a lot about respect and humility and I would never be as downright $ rude, either directly or indirectly, in writing anymore. Can we please finally stand up and say "no, it's not all right to take a snotty, snide tone and be celebrated as clever. It's not okay to bash people you don't like in posts or comments or tweets. You can keep doing it; that's your prerogative. But we will no longer squeal "Great post!" when it's nothing short of bullying."

!

!

I know that I'm far from alone in thinking this. Many people recently emailed me and told me that they fully agree. All it would take for this trend to no longer pass as acceptable and popular is for all of us who find it objectionable to say so when we see it in action. Because inaction is what currently allows it to continue, and it only makes all of us look as childish as some of us.

! !

Q: There is always the argument about what background best prepares one for doing SEO. You and I have the much-maligned English degrees, yet I can say for myself that it's served me very well so far. Based on what you've learned so far, what type of skills do you think people need to be successful in this industry?

!

A: I think too much effort goes into analysing who has what degree, or who has no degree, and talking the abovementioned smack about it. Two of the most successful, brilliant people I know in search didn't finish university. I have a degree in English, as do you. I could have used some more computer science knowledge when I began, but most of the really important skills I've learned, I couldn't have been taught in a classroom. I could have spent those four years learning what I've learned on the job as an adult, but then again, there are many things I learned in college, in and out of the classroom that help me daily.

! !

To do well here, you have to be willing to accept that what you knew to be true a short time ago isn't true anymore. That can be more difficult than it sounds. You have to love learning, but be prepared to learn things over and over again as they present themselves in different ways. And I believe you have to love the technical side of SEO because if you don't understand it, or aren't willing to learn everything you can about it, you're at a severe disadvantage.

! !

Q: Since this is the Women in Marketing series, I need to ask a girl question here. How do you think women are viewed in the industry overall? Any really good or really bad personal experiences? A: Well, aside from the usual comments about being young and female and working in tech, I have certainly not found it to be a disadvantage or an advantage, save for the fact that women writers in this field get more attention than their male counterparts overall. That's an advantage.

!

There are one or two gross problems in SEO that revolve around gender and sex, but this isn't the time or place to get into them. That's a battle for a different day.
