Health website flies the Koop at $9 a share
Some are suggesting that website owners should block Microsoft's IP addresses to hit back at Microsoft. Is Microsoft really doing this? If so, what should be done? As one website owner suggests: IP addresses belonging to Microsoft are requesting pages from eKstreme.com and blogSci.com (my science blog) with HTTP referrer headers suggesting that the hits were from live.com searches. These referrer headers are spoofed as the keywords from these supposed searches are sometimes in no way related to the requested page. Additionally, for most of the other supposed searches, the requested pages do not rank in the top 10 (first page of results) in a way to send this traffic.
Quotable:
Drkoop.com Inc. (Proposed ticker: KOOP) priced its initial public offering at $9 a share on Monday night. Shares will begin trading later today. The company, a Web-based health information service, is offering 9,375,000 shares to the public. The price range was $7 to $9 a share. Bear Stearns is the lead underwriter with Hambrecht & Quist assisting. Wit Capital is distributing shares online. As the name of the company would imply, C. Everett Koop, M.D., former U.S. Surgeon General, is chairman of the board. Given Koop's well-known name, the massive market for healthcare services and Healtheon's (Nasdaq: HLTH) $5.5 billion acquisition of WebMD, drkoop.com should garner Wall Street's attention. Drkoop.com, the company, pays Koop, the doctor, royalties for use of his likeness. Koop gets 2 percent of the company's sales for current products and up to 4 percent of sales from new products over the agreement's 5-year term. Koop also makes six figures in consulting fees and has options to purchase 713,437 shares with an average price of 11 cents. Drkoop.com, which calls itself a consumer healthcare portal, is looking to broaden its consumer distribution through portal agreements and content syndication. In April, drkoop.com penned a three-year pact to be the exclusive content provider for the Go.com Health Center. According to regulatory filings, drkoop.com is paying Infoseek (Nasdaq: SEEK) and Disney (NYSE: DIS) $57.9 million over the life of the deal. Drkoop.com will also provide content to ESPN and The Family Channel. The company also has a distribution deal with At Home (Nasdaq: ATHM). The company plans on making money by enabling e-commerce transactions such as prescription refills and and advertising. The drkoop.com launched its site in July 1998 and has 280,000 registered users and 6 million unique users, the company said in regulatory filings. Drkoop.com will need to grow its traffic to grow revenue, which is currently a bleak number. For 1998, drkoop.com reported sales of $43,000 and a loss of $9 million. For the quarter ending March 31, the company reported sales of $404,000 and a loss of $4.1 million. As of March 31, 1999, drkoop.com had an accumulated deficit of about $24.2 million. The company cites drweil.com, mayohealth.org, onhealth.com, thriveonline.com and webmd.com among its main competitors. Drkoop.com also cites affinity groups and traditional medical information providers as competition.

Why Starting An Internet Business Can Be Extremely Easy By Juhan Stephens . STARTING AN INTERNET BUSINESS IS VERY REWARDING, WHEN A NEWBIE FOLLOWS THE CORRECT GUIDANCE. THE ENGINE, WHICH MAKES EVERYTHING TO ROLL, IS HIS OWN ATTITUDE, HIS WINNING SPIRIT. WHEN A NEWBIE HAS THE CORRECT ATTITUDE, HE WILL FIND WAYS TO THE SUCCESS, NOT THE EXPLANATIONS.
1
Is Your Own Attitude Strong?
It is wise to go through the reasons, why a newbie wants to start online. What are his motivations and what experiences he has, if any? The motivation is the reason to fight for the business and to try to find ways to win the obstacles. The content of the attitude should be more, than just the excitement. It should answer to the question, what benefits a marketer plans to produce and to whom? What expertise he has and how he has planned to stand out from the crowd?
2
The Learning Ladders. Starting an internet business is like taking the first step on the ladder. You cannot jump into the third one, but you have to proceed step by step. But even on the first step you can make money and it is wise to stay there for a while until you have fully understood all, what it includes.
3
The Discipline To Keep The Direction. The newbie phase is not an exception. Even the first ladder step requires, that a newbie knows where he is going to. In most cases a newbie knows the direction, but his self discipline is still weak and he will do unplanned things, which is not a good thing.
4
The Tracking Gives Information For The Future. The state of the art tracking systems, like Google Analytics, give useful information about the visitor behaviour on the site. This is the information, which a newbie must analyze carefully, because that information is honestly useful. To put it simply, the tracking shows, what works and what does not work.
5
The Start Is Easy, If That Is Your Attitude. The success in the Internet comes usually as a result of the right attitude. If a newbie thinks, that the start will be easy and he will succeed, he will most probably do it. The is the game of the big attitudes. Every successful marketer trusts mostly on himself. The errors are parts of this game, but if a newbie can analyze them, they become very helpful for the future. It is impossible to avoid the errors or some milder obstacles. The only solution is to maintain a positive attitude and to go on. WMM

wmm success story Annie Haven: Success in Selling Cow Manure on the Web > Haven’s family has been producing livestock since 1924, priding themselves as raising natural grass-fed livestock.
Success Story Name: Annie Haven Ever thought you can sell cow’s manure on the Web and profit from it? Annie Haven is doing it, and doing it well. Haven’s family has been producing livestock since 1924, priding themselves as raising natural grass-fed livestock. Long before organic farming became in vogue, they raise their livestock free of antibiotics, growth hormones and pesticides. Aside from livestock, Haven’s family business has been supplying local farmers with fertilizers, made from manure of their animals in their farms. However, as farmlands turn to suburban housing, Haven needed to find a different market for their fertilizers. They decided to expand their market by selling on the web. Authentic Haven Brand Natural Brewhttp://www.ahavenbrand.com was born. To succeed in selling animal manure as fertilizers on the Web, Haven had to do things differently.
“
First, Haven did not call their products “fertilizer”. Instead, their products are called “natural soil conditioner tea” and three variants are offered, namely, alfalfa for roses, cow manure and horse manure. There’s nothing inherently interesting or fascinating with manures or fertilizers; but “natural soil conditioner tea,” now that’s something else. Calling the products soil conditioner tea is also aimed at lowering the barrier of customer resistance to the products, as the name describes the benefits of the product and not what they are commonly known. It’s all about changing the negative perception of the products, and lowering the “yuck” factor of buying manure on the Web. But more than anything, it is just great Web writing and product presentation, making you want to know more and buy the products. Second, the products are cleverly designed and packaged for its target customers, the health conscious and green minded customers. The products are packaged in 3×5 inches brewing pouches. Customers will then “brew” the manure products by placing the pouch in 1 to 5 gallon container of water, which can then be used to water the plants. Through clever marketing and understanding of their customer base, sales of Haven’s fertilizers continue to grow by as much as 30 percent every year since 2005, according to Inc Magazine. Who knew that people would actually pay $21.95 for cow’s manure on the Web?

People, Not Search Engines and Algorithms, Drive Your Business I HAVE DECIDED TO WRITE THIS ARTICLE BECAUSE I WAS JUST REPLYING TO SOMEONE ABOUT THE QUALITY OF ARTICLE CONTENT VERSUS FOCUSING ON CLICKS AND TRAFFIC.
The idea is something like this:
So let me sum it all up - stop writing for the search engines, instead write to common problems, or (obscure problems that a lot of people don't know the answers to) and your niche readers will find you. Somehow. Don't worry about how. They will find you. And if you meet their needs, build a relationship with them, answer their emails when they write you, and provide products for sale that will meet their needs, they will buy from you. And that's what really matters.
There are couple of ways you can aspire to do article marketing -
By the way, want proof article marketing works?
1) Try to drive as many clicks as possible, ignoring the value of those clicks
First, send the link to this article to anyone you know who could be inspired by it. They will thank you for it.
2) Try to give as much value as possible and ONLY get clicks from visitors who are really interested in you.
Second, scroll to the bottom of this page. See how many views there have been. Then multiply the number of views times 18.9% - that's about my average CTR - so that will tell you about how many visits this article has gotten to my website below (some articles get as much as 30% - 40%, this could be one of them, but won't know until a few hundred people visit and I get good stats [in fact, check back here in a week or so, and I'll update the actual CTR for this article for you]).
By Sean Mize .
Well, if you are just trying to turn a margin by getting clicks cheaper than you can sell them - hey, 1) works just fine. But if you are building a real business...then you really should focus on the people. People, not search engines. People, not article directories. People, not algorithms. You see, it is people who drive your business. People with whom you build relationships. And people who buy from you.
Then multiply that number by about 20% - and that's the number of subscribers this one article will create for me. And my average subscriber invests about $30 with me over time. So you can do the math and determine what this non-optimized, don't care if the search engines ever find it, article has done for me. So...why don't you go out and write your own non-optimized, who cares if the search engines find it article, and get some results of your own??? WMM

wmm ask the expert Interview with Privacy Expert, Dan Tynan, Author of "Computer Privacy Annoyances" Award-winning journalist and TV commentator Dan Tynan has been writing about technology and it privacy implication for 20 years. In his book, Computer Privacy Annoyances, Dan offers practical solutions for protecting your personal information both on the Net and in the physical world. And does so in a surprisingly entertaining way. The following interview with Dan Tynan provides a behind-the-scenes look at Computer Privacy Annoyances. David: What attracted you to the privacy issues addressed in your book? Dan Tynan: I'm concerned about where our society is going in terms of respect for privacy and civil liberties in general. I feel like most people are asleep at the wheel, and the ship is being steered by people who do not have our best interests at heart -out-of-control (and largely unsupervised) data brokers and an increasingly encroaching federal government, to name two. We are at an absolutely crucial and unprecedented point in our history where technology can enable the kinds of snooping even Orwell couldn't have dreamed up in his worst nightmares. We've always had government eavesdropping, we've always had people who would sell us out for a nickel. Computers and the Internet enable a kind of a one-stop-shopping for data thieves of every type that was not possible before.

wmm ask the expert Everything you buy online, everything you read, your financial info from online banking, your medical information (from web browsing), your hobbies and interests and dark secrets (from Web browsing, email, and newsgroups), all of it gathered in one place that someone 8,000 miles away can access without your ever being aware of it. Thank God J. Edgar Hoover never had this capability. I wish to god George W. Bush did not. David: Why did you decide to write this particular book? Dan Tynan: The simple reason: Because Robert, my editor at O'Reilly, asked me to, and eventually offered a decent enough deal for me to say yes. (I've known Robert for nearly my entire writing career; he was a mentor to me at one point.) Privacy is a subject that has long interested me; I've written and edited many stories about it. Frankly, I thought it would be a topic that could sustain my interest long enough to complete a book (I'm a magazine writer, where a short attention span is a plus, professionally speaking.) David: How did your own viewpoints evolve from the time you started the book to the time it was complete? Dan Tynan: It was more of a confirmation of my suspicions than a change in viewpoint. One of the things that developed as I was writing this was that not only was the personal computer a single point of vulnerability, it was also the strongest weapon against privacy invasions. You can lock it down. You can research your options, and fight back, and tell others how to fight back. But only after you understand the problem first. David: When talking to people who read your book, what are the one or two reader comments that stick out most in your mind? Dan Tynan: People seem genuinely surprised that the book is not a complete snooze, that it's actually an interesting read. Even funny, in bits, if not exactly a laugh riot. The original title of this book was to be "Privacy Annoyances" (part of the "Annoyances" series). O'Reilly tacked on "Computer" as the book was being finished, over my protests, because they said 'otherwise, staff in different bookstores may not consistently stock it in the same category.' It seemed like a logical argument. But people I know who've read it have all commented on how they were: a) surprised to find it wasn't all about computers, and b) were equally surprised to find how much of it applied to their lives. It's really a general interest book.

Ideas on How to Make a Homepage for a Website By Ewen Chia . Do you want to increase traffic on your website? It is actually possible when you know how to make a homepage for a website. You must give your best when making your homepage because it will serve as the main entry point for the rest of the site. When it isn't appealing in any way, then expect rejection from possible viewers. But don't be upset because we have good news. You can now customize it and add some perky stuff in it to increase your visitors. Here are some constructive tips that you can utilize for your web page. In making a homepage, you must keep it simple and understandable for people of all ages. Because visitors usually look for the information that you will give, you must keep them in awe until they click on the links to explore your whole site. If you really want to get your viewer's attention, make it conversational and catchy at the same time. You don't want to end up seeing your visitor browsing another site because yours was too confusing and overstuffed. Let's start on how to make a homepage for a website. Make sure that you have created a unique folder for saving your website files. Inside it, you should have at least two HTML files, a CSS style sheet and another folder for storing all the images you need. Open one of your HTML files with top style pro followed by the CSS sheet. Look for your front page which will usually start of with the word Hello or Welcome. You must not change anything with the other sections and proceed to the contents of your file.
Your homepage will just be part of your website and usually has the same codes with the basics. After putting up the correct XHTML code, you will now proceed to the contents of your website. At this point, you have to explain to your viewers how you've come up with the idea and a brief history of why was your website created. Your homepage will just be part of your website and usually has the same codes with the basics. After putting up the correct XHTML code, you will now proceed to the contents of your website. Instead, use links that will direct them to a more descriptive content that will further increase your website traffic. important so that your visitors will know who made your website. This can also be an opportunity for you, if you're the one who made it. Just keep in mind that a homepage must always be kept natural yet pleasing to the eye. Stuffing it with advertisers and links might be a bad idea. Those links have their own place and bringing them on your greeting page can turn your visitors down. Be creative. Have a poll beside it and use rankings so that people can leave helpful comments for you. Countdown timers also can help as it keeps track of the number of visitors on your homepage. Writer's Block No More! Get Into The Habit Of Writing Daily and Creating Unlimited Written Content By Connie Ragen Green . Do you find yourself suffering from writer's block? Writer's block is the term we all use when we just don't have any ideas for what to write. I had heard about this when I first came online in 2006, but then forgot about it as I began to write. When I took a closer look I realized that no one had to go through this process of not being able to write; instead, it was simply a matter of getting into the writing habit on a daily basis. I was a classroom teacher for twenty years, and most of my students spoke English as a second language. Their home language was Spanish, Tagalog, Armenian, Chinese, or any of a host of other languages. While this made for an interesting cultural diversity in the classroom, it also meant that teaching them how to write was going to be even more difficult than with teaching native English speakers. The goal was to get them into the habit of writing every single day, including on weekends and during school vacations. I told them that if they were willing to write for twenty minutes each day, they would become skilled writers. It worked! The kids who were willing to do this began writing beautiful essays and stories, and after about a month could not even remember why it had been so difficult to think of what to write and how to write it in a way that got their message across to their reader. They no longer had any type of writer's block. What was truly interesting was that during this time I did no writing of my own. I had been discouraged from writing by people who were critical of me while I was still in college. Instead of taking my own advice, I did not write for more than twenty years. Once I came online, I realized that writing was going to be the single most important work activity each day. I started writing for twenty minutes each day, and soon that became an hour as I began to blog and to write articles on my topics to build my business. Start by writing about topics that are of interest to you. This will always be the best way to eliminate writer's block forever. We all want to talk and write about what we love, so do just that. You will find that within about a month you will have developed the writing habit, and will be able to write each day to build your business and create an unlimited amount of content.

wmm Q&A Review of Stephen Colbert Interview With Social Network Expert on Comedy Central
WMM 28
These networks are alive in reality today anywhere that people interact; i.e., church, work, school, neighborhoods, friend circles, etc. These are the true and traditional social networks. As time passes and the needs and means by which people communicate change, so do the media that society chooses to utilize. Communication and society have come a long way. Personal communication earlier was limited to personal contact including physical gestures as well as verbal communications. Mankind's methods of communicating are constantly changing. Early long distance communication was achieved by sending runners with messages by foot or horse, smoke or light signals, and maybe even yodeling! With the industrial revolution, the world saw a dynamic changes in communication with the advent of the railroad, telegraph, radio, automobile, telephone and then broadcast television. As communication changes, so does our awareness and the nature of our interactions!
CHANGE IN COMMUNICATION
We currently are at a point in history where high speed internet, satellite, broadband, 4G Network are the norm. Information is exchanged at near light speed! The means by which society communicates in today's digitally driven, immediate Google gratification, Facebook, and Twitter fueled society has dramatically changed! Technology and social media will continue to change as science and technology move forward at rapidly increasing rates!
WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY. OR HAVE WE?
The author's discussion infers that the networks in which we participate in online have a direct and predictable relation with our reality. Fowler asserts that "The Law of Association" holds true and that the people we associate with, online and offline, are quite similar. He emphasizes great value of the actual humanity factor associated with actual social networks and the reality of day to day life. He seems to appreciate sites like MySpace, Twitter, and Facebook. Yet encourages us to take advantage of actual friendships beyond the realm of the virtual, online world. Business 3 Eye Opening Reasons to Start Today By Dale East .
No running around or huge financial resources are necessary to start your online business. When you are focused on your intent, it takes just a few hours to launch into your very own business. Here are 3 eye opening reasons why you need not put it off for another day and start right today.
1. Volley of options. The digital world is the only place where you find a volley of options to start your business. This luxury is absent in the physical world, because the demands of a physical business are far more than that of the digital world. Identify your strengths and skill sets and you will find a business that stays close to these strongholds. Opportunities exist for almost every profession, trade or calling and you need to focus your research to zero in on the business that suits you best.
2. Low or nil start up cost What is the start up cost for your internet business? Most often, the start up cost is nothing and if at all, it is in the form of some registration fee or cost of starter kits. You have the flexibility to identify business models where even this investment is not essential. Responsible work, quality output, and timely deliveries will help you scale great heights.
3. Support from around the globe The digital world is the only place where you find a volley of options to start your business. Cut Your Marketing Budget Don’t Buy Junk Links! Ebay junk sellers, amateur marketers, and even established online marketing websites are taking millions of dollars out of the pockets of website owners By Jeremy Miller . . At the point at which website owners decide to buy, they are under the impression that they are investing in links back to their website that will increase their search engine rankings. Enticed by advertisements for high Google PageRank links, link backs for .org and .gov websites, and the unbelievable hundreds of backlinks for under $50, many website owners are giving into the blackhat deals disguised as strategic marketing initiatives that will increase their website rank. The shocking details first – I did a test campaign with a very highly established so called search engine marketing firm who was selling niche blog reviews. The blog reviews were not cheap and the cost of them ran $1000 for 100 unique blog reviews. Granted this is $10 per review which would be a great price if they were real and offered VALUE, I went ahead and tested it out. The results were shocking as they sent me a list of all of the blog reviews compiled into a report. All the blog posts were live posts with the blogs having postings that appeared for the last year, and looked legit from the outside at first glance. The blogs boasted rankings of Google PageRank 2 – 4 each as well. However, the real shock came when I found out they were selling junk reviews of blogs that were not even indexed on Google! This means Google doesn’t even know the blogs existed! So, the company probably went out and bought expired domain names that still had PageRank and then uploaded blog postings to each blog to make them look legit and then made a killing off of people who bought the blog reviews. My response – I immediately contacted the company and told them I was onto their scheme as the blogs were NOT INDEXED in Google. If the blog is not known to Google, it will hurt your website’s ranking more than help it! They promptly turned around and immediately gave me a refund with no questions asked as they knew they were ripping me off. The worst part is this is a company that is a featured sponsor in the Search Engine Strategies conference and Search Engine Expo conference later this year (hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs and business owners attend). This is an absolutely disgusting marketing practice and that is why you really have to be very careful on which company you choose to market your website.
WMM 38 Is a website cached in Google? Go to Google.com and type in the search box – cache:url:
The results will show the website cached and the last time Google cached the site:
Websites that are not cached by Google could be blacklisted (also known as a blackhat site) and being linked to the website could actually hurt your online reputation versus help it. In any matter, the link is of absolutely no value to you unless the website is cached by Google! The whole blog reviews incident actually inspired me to offer a service to go out and find people quality blog reviews that point to their website and at the same time educate people about the danger of junk blog reviews. The example of the blog reviews I gave is just one example of junk links! I find eBay auctions that talk about getting your website on 10 Google PR5-PR9 blogs for $9.99. This is another steal of your marketing dollars! When marketing your website, keep in mind that if it seems too good, IT IS! Check out these ebay auctions that I wouldn’t touch:
It is tough to know whether marketing firms are treating you right so the most I can tell you is to know the company you are working with and don’t take the cheap way out. Choose an ethical website marketing company that has a great reputation and is credible in their industry. As owner of Bugon Website Services, I cannot fathom how people who take money from others can sleep at night while taking hundreds of dollars and not providing people with a service that will benefit them one bit.
Know your business, know your marketing company (that you choose), coordinate with your marketing company on your website (even design changes) and watch your business be more successful…And watch out for those con artists in tie-dye marketing suits. Some will guess, some purposely rip you off, and then you have some that just do the right thing. Take the time to pick a marketing company who believes in doing the right thing and you will not have to worry about paying for junk links. In turn, you will cut your marketing budget and increase your website’s return on investment! WMM

List Building The Right Way
WMM 39 Any decent email autoresponder service or script will automatically remove people from the “Free” list once they are added to your “Buyers” list. Autoresponder services such as www.aweber.com are fully capable of doing this. So, I highly recommend that if you are not doing this already. You are leaving money on the table. All you are doing is annoying people on your list, unnecessarily.
By Michael Silvester . Okay guys, everyone knows that the money is in the list. No matter where you go to get your Internet marketing advice. You will no doubt come across somebody that says the money is in your e-mail list. Now, I totally agree with that and you should too, because any decent website marketer treats their email list like gold. And if you don’t have an email list yet...you better get started. More on that later...
Let me give you another example. Let’s say that Johnny lands on your website and decides that your free report might be a good idea to download. So little Johnny punches in his details into your opt-in form and then gets redirected to the download page. Johnny then downloads the report. Little Johnny read your report, and read your sales e-mails that you are sending him and decides that. Yes, he’s going to buy.
But there’s one thing that many people don’t do with their email list and I think this more important than almost anything once you have built your list. And that is segregating your list. Now, what do I mean by segregating your e-mail list? Instead of slamming every single one of your e-mail subscribers into one big massive list. You should be grouping them up into sections. Place them into groups of interest...so you can tailor special messages just for them and their interests. Let me give you some examples. You should have a list of “Leads”, these are the guys and gals that have not spent any money with you (Yet). They might be people that have downloaded your free e-book, or are just receiving your email newsletter. Or maybe registered an interest in one of your products? Now, the reason you keep these guys in their own list is because you want to focus all your attention on getting these guys to the next step (buying something). You’re going to focus all your energy on getting these guys to spend some money with you. You are running a business...Not a charity! So to become profitable fast...make them an offer they can’t refuse. The best tip I can give you at this stage is to offer them something that will solve a problem. Or something that is on target with their interests or desires. Then, once they have spent some money with you. You move them into the next group. You can call it your “Buyers” list. Now these guys are red hot, because they have already bought your product. Your intention with this list is to keep them purchasing products and building a great relationship with them. I recommend that you suggest additional products that you may own or have distribution rights to OR you could possibly recommend affiliate products to them. (Remember, keep it targeted)
So little Johnny decides to click on your order link, proceeds through the payment process and is now a brand spanking new owner of your new informational product. Then a few days later little Johnny checks his e-mails, and wonders “why the Hell am I still getting all these sales messages?”. E.g. One says “Little Johnny, you need to buy this!” and “Hey little Johnny check this out!” Then “Yo Johnny my product is the best thing since sliced bread..buy it now!” Little Johnny is starting to get slightly p*ssed off that he still getting sales emails. Even after he’s bought the product? Wouldn’t that upset you too? Now, can you see what’s happening here? You don’t want to annoy people that have just bought your product, because no matter how good your product is...there is a very big percentage of people are still unsure that they have made the right decision in buying your product, even after they purchased it. Your emails after they purchase, should make them comfortable. Help them use the product with pointers and tips. Also let them know you are there to help. Build that relationship. I hope you now realize how important it is to at least segregate your list, meaning separating the buyers from your leads. Anyway, I’m going to leave that with you! If you’re using an email service or script, that allows you to segregate your list. You need to do it right now, if you’re not already. It will make things easier for everyone! Take care. Michael Silvester

-- How To Take The Pain Out of Selling -The “NEW” Mindset for Selling In The New Economy By Ari Galper ., Creator of Unlock The Game® If you are new to selling or you’re a seasoned business owner or sales professional, then you know first-hand that selling in this new economy can be painful – if you’re doing it the old way. Sales rejection, playing the numbers game and chasing prospects are still prevalent ideas handed down to us from the old traditional sales gurus.
Your intentions may be genuine, but the language you are using, the questions you’re asking, and the entire approach you’re taking is inadvertently triggering a lack of trust that makes it almost impossible to recover from because you’re only focused on you and your goals.
If you flick through the pages of business magazines and sales training material, you will find a constant flow of messages like, 'Focus on closing the sale'; 'Overcome objections'; 'Be relentless'; 'Accept rejection as a normal part of selling'; 'Use persuasion to get useful information about your prospects'; and 'Chase the sale'.
Creating Authentic Relationships, Selling Without Fear
In short, get the sale at the expense of the human relationship.
This new way of selling allows you to truly connect with people by being your natural self. And you can do it completely without fear of rejection. And the person on the other end of the phone (or across the table) will naturally trust you and actually want to tell you the truth.
For the customer, this approach is transparent and all too familiar. Crossing social boundaries and adding pressure to the sales process makes it a gut-wrenching and painful process. There is a much better way to succeed in selling - move away from the hidden agenda of focusing on making the sale.
Here’s the good news: there is a new way to sell that allows you to be your authentic self without having to compromise your personal integrity.
It all starts with shifting your sales mindset.
When you do this, a new world opens up for you. In other words, when you stop "selling" and start building authentic relationships based on trust, authenticity and integrity, the possibilities are endless.
No Trust, No Sale When there’s no common ground between you and the person you are selling to, when there’s no connection, trust simply can’t be created. And this is why people don’t trust those who are selling something. Even putting aside from the experience of rejection, selling can be painful for another reason … when you use old school selling techniques you can feel your integrity being compromised. You can feel the lack of respect from the people you’re talking to and you may even think they’re right to include you in the negative “salesperson” stereotype.
Getting to the Truth is What Brings You More Sales You’ll need to be open to a new mindset that allows you to focus on creating trust first, before focusing on the sale. The first thing you’ll need to do to “unlock the game”
WMM 41
of selling and break the cycle of distrust is to stop focusing on making the sale. Huh? How can that be you ask? Key mindset shift: Focusing on the truth instead ironically creates more sales because you’ve created real trust with your prospective clients or customers. Stated again even more clearly: Your NEW GOAL is to find the truth (as to whether or not there is a potential for a sale between you and your prospect). Finding out if there is a fit between you and them is the pre-requisite to creating an open and trusting two-way dialogue.
Principles Of The NEW Selling Mindset There are three principles behind what I call the Unlock The Game® Mindset. 1. Diffuse The Pressure Always be diffusing sales pressure. That’s what you’ll need to be thinking about in every conversation you have in your daily selling activities, whether it’s on the phone, face to face, or even in email. Traditional sales methods teach us to always be moving the sales process forward, which puts pressure on people, you and them. For example, at the end of a call with a potential client, or at the end of a meeting, you’ve been probably been taught you should either close the sale right there and then or schedule the follow up meeting to keep the ball moving forward. Doing this puts pressure on the other person to respond, especially if you don’t know the truth of what they are really thinking. Where to begin with this is “letting go” of trying to move the sales process forward and instead, taking out the pressure and giving your prospect the control by saying: “Where do you think we should go from here?” They will immediately view you as someone who genuinely respects what they are thinking and that will be the beginning of the trust-building process. Amazing things will start to happen to you when you start creating trust instead of driving toward the sale. 2. Get To The Truth Getting to the truth instead of just focusing on the sale is key. When I say “truth”, I mean discovering the truth of exactly
what the other person is thinking. The language you use is very important because it has to contain words and phrases that create a deep connection. For example, when someone calls you and tells you that they’ve heard or read about what your offer and they’d like you to send them some information, there is very specific language that you can use to immediately build trust and get to the truth of what the other person really wants. First, of course, you’ll want to begin with the pressurediffusing phrase: “That’s not a problem.” Then you can say, “Would it make sense if we first figured out what specific problems you are wanting to solve, that way I can know exactly what to send you?” That language re-engages the conversation into a two-way dialogue. So instead of delaying, waiting for the person to receive a “packet” from you, and then “following up” (which is an old school sales phrase you want to banish from your vocabulary immediately), you can immediately begin to reach your goal of getting to the truth by getting the other person to open to you because they can see you really care about helping them. 3. Become a Problem Solver and Trusted Advisor In The Eyes of Your Prospects One of the key strategies to helping our clients make the shift to becoming a trusted advisor is helping them convert their features and benefits into what we call “Problem Statements”. Problem Statements are key phrases that describe your prospects problems so clearly, that by stating them to your potential clients or customers is the trigger that connects them to you. You’ll immediately become a trusted advisor when your conversation is focused on solving their problem rather than pitching the future benefits of your solution. Feeling understood by others is what opens the door to creating authentic trust. wmm back story Who The Hell Is John Carlton? John Carlton slyly refers to himself as “the most ripped-off writer on the Web”, and no one on the inside of the online business world disagrees. Other marketers also call John “the most respected writing teacher alive”… and the list of well-known marketers who freely reference John as their primary mentor for writing sales messages is just staggering. John Carlton Interview Summary notes:
Q: Is John the greatest living copywriter? John refuses to be called the world’s greatest living copywriter. He would rather that he was referred to as the most ripped off and respected writer online. John also thinks that the highest form of praise is to see people mimicking his work, and following him and really keeping an eye out for everything he does.
Q: What is your most ripped off ad? The one legged golfer ad was one of the most famous things he’s written. It’s been recycled and reused countless times since he first wrote it about fifteen years ago. It became a very powerful example of how to do a ‘hook’. He spent more than a decade perfecting his craft and has now spent another decade teaching people what he learned. John feels most rewarded when he sees people come up with good ideas as a result of his teaching. Its all about Bullets! One of the greatest learnings I have learnt from John is how important it is to write punchy bullets. Listen in as he drops a HUGE hint about the way he writes copy! John hops on the ‘Hot Seat’ On my last post I asked ‘What’s the biggest question you would like to ask John Carlton?’ and got hundreds of replies. My plan was to run through many of these questions and have John answer with the first thing that comes to mind. (In the call you will see how hard this is!!!)
Q: What’s more important, injecting character, storytelling, or learning the ways of the NLP ninja? John says storytelling and personality are way up the list of important things and go together because it’s hard to have a good personality without telling stories. Although NLP can be powerful, he thinks that personality and storytelling are your first choice weapons and NLP is way down the list.

Q: What are your thoughts on long sales letters versus videos? Videos are sales letters in a different form. If you asked the question, ‘how long will it take me to get my point across?’ If you can deliver the hook, make them listen to you and get them to give you their money, whether it’s a long or short letter or a long or short video, it doesn’t matter as long as you accomplish your goal which is to make that sale. The proven winner? What’s been proven to be most effective now is a combination of a video and written text at the bottom. The reason this strategy is so effective is because you engage your customers in a multi-sensory level. The goal is….. Bottom line is whether you use videos or sales letters, you have to be able to make your audience in an ‘active state’ and moved enough for you to make the sale. Use videos correctly Videos can be vital only if we use it in the best way possible. This means delivering the right kind of sales letter in conjunction with the other basic sales process that always includes text in some way. Start out with text? You’re always going to start out with text, on emails for example, it’s always faster and easier to send a text email with a URL for people to go to instead of them waiting for your video or audio to load before they can understand your message and we’re almost certain that very few will stay waiting long enough.
Q: What tips do you have when it comes to writing squeeze pages? Every step of the way in a sales process and in any kind of human interaction where you are trying to influence the behavior, so try to cut your sales process into little chunks of progressive pitches that get people’s attraction incrementally. Move in small steps Where your heading sells the sub heading, your sub heading sells the video, the first few seconds of the video sells the next few seconds of it and so on. On squeeze pages, the goal is not to sell a product or make them like you, it’s to get them to say ‘ok, let’s see what you’ve got’ and give you their name and email address, plain and simple. Avoid this rookie mistake! You’re not supposed to make your squeeze page a mini sales letter because what it’s for is not to sell a product yet, it’s to sell the idea that they should move forward and listen to you further.
Q: What time management system have you created to meet deadlines? A deadline forces you to finish something. Without deadlines, nothing is ever finished and you are in the mercy of an ambiguous and vague finish line that does not exist. There are novelists who put their books out after a decade. On the other hand, there are very prolific, really good writers who put books out every year because they set deadlines for themselves.
WMM 44 Sleep your way to deadlines… John has a Freelance Copywriting Course an there’s a part in it where he talks about setting deadlines. John will often do all the research, make an outline in bullets and then go take a nap and tell himself that when he wakes up he will have a headline and that works for him. This process has been used by successful writers.
Q: What makes a top copywriter? How can you tell if a person is a top copywriter and not a average one? It’s almost impossible to tell if a copywriter is good unless you know the process yourself. You may hire someone to write for you and if you do and you do not know anything about it, you wouldn’t know why it fails or sells. You MUST learn to write sales copy The lesson here is everyone must learn how to write their own sales copy. The biggest most successful guys write their own stuff, they may hire other writers to do smaller things like social media but when it’s something very important, they write it themselves. It is not all about technology John says you can have all the technology in the world, the best product but if you don’t have a good sales copy, nothing will move. Are you willing to entrust that to some stranger? Starting from scratch Looking at it the other way around, you can lose all the technology, all your money but if you know how to sell, you can become successful again. The ability to sell is a skill that can never be taken away from you.
Q: Is there a next big trend in copywriting? Copywriting hasn’t changed since people knew how to write. People have been selling since the beginning of time. Copywriting is salesmanship in writing. As long as there’s selling to be done, there will always by copywriting and there’s no next best thing, it always has and always will be like that. Scared of selling? People are often afraid of selling. If they only thought of it as ‘providing a service’ they’d learn to really develop the skill and see the world in a different light. If you’re in business and you have a problem with selling, you shouldn’t be in business. Salesmen lead better lives because of the rewards that go with being aware that you are trying to improve other people’s lives by giving them the solution and a better choice.
Q: What is the single biggest mistake that you see people make when they’re writing a copy? Not understanding what’s going on in the head of the prospect. Most businessmen when they sell ‘talk at their customers’ when what they should be doing is using influence and persuasion. Instead of trying to force someone into agreeing with you, join the conversation and make them realize ‘on their own’ that they need you or what you’re selling.

There’s no magic word but what you need is to know the language that makes people act. What’s worked is as simple as addressing the opportunity and highlighting it. Experience tells us that we may come across life changing opportunities maybe two or three times only in our lifetime and they do not announce themselves with thunder and lightning. Quite often, if you’re not conditioning yourself to be ready for that big opportunity, it just passes you by. You are allowed to have goals? John Carlton himself was not that atuned and ready for opportunities until he read the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. He then learned to set goals for himself and dream and make a plan and actually be allowed to go get it. Having read that book was the biggest opportunity for him because it taught him to really take action in the direction of his goals. Emphasize your opportunity Knowing how life changing one opportunity can be, we must make an effort to really emphasize it. However, a lot of people in the world do not fully understand the power of being sensitive to opportunities so they can grab it. The challenge there is being able to speak in that language that is emotionally meaningful to your prospects for them to see the true, once in a lifetime opportunity that you are presenting. The success of this also depends on the type of market that you’re targeting so you have to be able to match their thoughts and catch their attention.
Q: How would John sell Simple Writing System in print The phrase then, for Simple Writing System would be, ‘what more are you waiting for? You have all the proof you need, there are respected people telling you that this is what they used and recommend.’ Another thing is, people are afraid of change, there should be a warning that says ‘your life will change when you use this because what this is will do is give you enough to be successful’. My results so far Finally we talked about how John has been telling me to put more thoughts into my emails and as I started to practice that, I have seen huge improvements on click-through and open rates on the emails I sends out. Doing something you will always do better than doing nothing. Simple Writing System John talks about how the Simple Writing System also gives you an opportunity to receive help from a community of those who have tested it and have been successful because of it.
The lesson here is everyone must learn how to write their own sales copy. The biggest most successful guys write their own stuff, they may hire other writers to do smaller things like social media but when it’s something very important, they write it themselves - John Carlton
