I've been struggling with affiliate marketing for the majority of the past year. I get quite a bot of traffic to my sites, but only seem to rack up one or 2 sales per month. 6 Reasons Why Your Home Based Online Business Failed to Make Money By Allan See Any given day, millions of people look to get out of the rat race, and try to make money from home. We all crave to have a life. We don't want to collapse trying to make money. Everyone starts with immense enthusiasm like a child running after ice cream. Within three months most are walking. Within six months majority closed shop. If your business does not money, here's the reassuring news. Failure in running a home based business or an online business is common. Recovery from failure to success is also common, and for those owners persistent enough to bounce back, nothing can make them go back to their old lifestyles ever. So what went wrong? And how to pick up the baton and touch the finish line? How to be finally successful in our journey to make money? 1. Incorrect mindset Most of us come from a career background. We have the worker mindset. Our focus is to get our job done and collect the paycheck. We are afraid when other people come do our job. They might later take away our job. As a business owner, whether it's a home based business or an online business, we have to plan, find product to sell, make that product, sell that product, make the customer happy so they want to come back again and again for more, communicate with people interested to buy but have not yet decided to buy. There's so much to do when we choose to make money on our own. We need a change to a home based business and online business owner mindset. But what is this mindset like? Recognize that time is of utmost importance when we set out to make money. Whatever that we can get other people to do we should. If free that's great. If there is a cost then as long as its affordable, and the works get done better and faster than we can achieve ourselves, go for it. Deciding factor is can we make money? Do not allow self-pride to hinder our goal to make money. Just like the aeroplane taking off from the runway, the home based online business must be up and running soonest, at all costs. 2. Help for your home based or online business As a home business or online business owner we are our own teacher and mentor. Sometimes that may not be enough. It's good to have a friend who is also running a home based business or online business like yourself. So very often the kind of difficulties that need to be overcome are common and there is no need to re-invent a solution when asking and sharing is all it takes. This can alleviate a whole lot of stress.

3. Run out of gas We have to keep the initial enthusiasm and fire burning. Never allow the wish to make money to wane. Key to making sure this never happens is to get your home based online business to earn money as fast as possible, doesn't matter that it is small income at the beginning. It is a wellknown fact that franchise businesses exhibit a significantly higher success rate and earlier take off rate than completely new concept businesses. 4. Patience and determination It definitely helps to have a symbol of your goal right in front of you. Why are you working your guts out for? This can be a model of a house that you want to own, a Porsche car that you have been dreaming so long to have, a happy family that can afford they things they want, and so on. Some look at their children and immediately feel the necessity and the must do even I die trying kind of force. You've got to be able to survive the bounce. 5. Don't fall for short cuts It's an illusion. Short cuts, especially when they come free of charge, don't work. There are many people who made millions in a month. People can push buttons and make tons of money, but it takes time, knowledge and a whole lot of experience to do it. The best that you can do, and this is proven to work, is you should aim to cut short your learning curve, and better still, earn while you learn. 6 Fail because your home based business or online business never got started If you want to learn how to swim, you've got to get in the pool! Reading and planning and for that matter watching a ton of videos will in fact certainly help you... but please don't stop there. If you want to make money the take definite action to get your home based business or online business off the ground.

Have you noticed? The hardest of these obstacles can actually be avoided. The best and most effective, nearly 100 percent success rate, business method that works is to clone some body else's home based business or online business that works and proven to make money.. This applies to home based business, internet business, online business, and any other type of business. Clone McDonald if you want, or Burger King, or Long John Silver, or Apple or whatever business that is proven to make money. Pay a little bit if you have to. Come to think of it, this actually reminds me of my classmate. He will always copy my homework answers and score full marks all the time. Search and clone a working system and let it make money for you as soon as possible. You can continue with your learning as you earn money. Jeff left Kodak in 2010 and is currently an author and speaker.

1. During your time at Kodak, from 2006 to 2010, social media went mainstream. How did you integrate social media marketing with traditional marketing to generate sales? For the most part, you shouldn’t look at it as a different type of destination, but an overall program. That’s part of everything you do. It should be natural to everything you do. Spent a great time doing activities to step and repeat (an old printing term) but had great applications in the digital world. Had content, but found different channels to implement the message. Social media is now one of those channels. 2. How important was social media to your overall marketing plan? Was there a tool/network (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, etc) that stood out above the others? At Kodak we were using about every tool there was and is, in order to listen and talk to customers. One of the most effective ones for Kodak has been Twitter. When you think of the essence of the Kodak brand, it's around Kodak moments and memories. These happen when you share them. Twitter is about sharing moments of your life so there is a natural affinity between the two. 3. Since Dell announced their Twitter sales success ($6.5 million in 2009), companies have began to take social media seriously as a sales generation tool, not just a passive marketing tool. Have you see this happening with Kodak? Were actual sales being generated through social media? Or did it function primarily as a communication channel? Kodak’s campaign to name the “Kodak PlaySport” has become a legend in the social media community. The subsequent sales that have been generated for Kodak’s HD pocket videos has been carried out almost completely by promotions on twitter and word of mouth via that channel.

WMM 13 4. What role did blogging play in your marketing plan at Kodak? Kodak had one of the very first corporate blogs in the country. But when I say corporate blog, it is the most uncorporate blog it could be, which probably makes it one of the most successful. It is with personality and flair, and at the same time we were one of the first people to implement a chief blogger. It operates much like a chief editor in the newspaper. They blog about areas of interest where other talented people get to write and share. Everyone in the world knows a picture is worth 1000 words, and at Kodak the blog is titled "1000 Words"; appropriately so. 5. Since leaving Kodak in May 2010 how have you changed your marketing approach, now that you are marketing your personal brand, instead of the huge and storied Eastman Kodak? Jokingly, I will tell you that I have less conversations with attorneys and HR : ) But nothing at this time. At Kodak, I was very successful in getting the message across using the tools at hand. I will say that I’ll be spending a great deal more time in mobile and in the use of video because I think these are two huge growth areas by consumers and media, and will be an extremely effective tool. 6. What role is online marketing playing in the promotion of your new book, The Mirror Test? A great deal. It’s been spread almost exclusively online, and word of mouth. We purchased some ads, but a great deal of it is in the area of SEO and driving good content that is searchable. 7. What motivated you to write The Mirror Test? To let other business owners know they are not at it alone and there are other people like them that have similar dreams hope and aspirations and they are looking for answers. 8. How much of what you write in The Mirror Test is based on your experience with Eastman Kodak? Can these principles be applied to small business as well? They are all intertwined. There is no difference between a small business on Main Street, and a big business on Wall Street. Same principles, same energy, same success metrics, marketing campaigns all apply. The only difference is in the scale. There are more zeros on Wall Street businesses than main street business in the numbers being generated. What is good on Main Street, is good on Wall Street. That is one of the big lessons I have learned. 9. What do you hope your readers will take away, and put into practice? The key message is that every business leader, big or small needs to look into the mirror and ask themselves those big questions and know for the most part the person in the mirror is responsible for answering those questions. 10. What are you reading now? And what's next for you? Elizabeth I. The story on the life of Queen Elizabeth, and her reign. The next book is “The Last Stand”. I am reading another book on Custer’s defeat at Little Big Horn by Crazy Horse and my Lakota friends. It most certainly will not be a book containing any vampires or werewolves. I’m a veracious reader. Although I do a few eBooks I am more traditional in my reading. I like paper, and hard cover.

Use a Strategy to Earn Money Online By: D James

A great application of a strategy would be to build an online business that reaches your goal of financial independence and working from home. How could you approach this? Think first of a time-line going from point A to point B where A is your current state and B is where you want to go. The planner would approach this time-line by setting a certain, but small number of significant goals to reach in a specific time. The creative thinker would then ask what they could do uniquely at each goal to grow the business.

If you have taken some time scanning through internet to look at internet or affiliate marketers and their success stories, you probably have asked just how they became so successful. Typically, a person's reaction to this is to either sit down and try to plan out just what to do next, or, simply start working online in a haphazard way - just trying one thing or another. What people typically miss or don't understand is that a plan is not enough. While some might luck into success, most will not. What is really needed from the start is a strategy for working online. Many times, however, people confuse a strategy with a plan. Planning is the process of defining a set list of tasks to be completed in a certain amount of time. For example, you could plan to build a profitable niche website over the next three months. Though this is not a bad way of thinking, a plan is focused on a specific goal. What isn't taken into account is a broader perspective on building your online business through thoughtful growth. So, just what is a strategy then? Imagine someone who is extremely creative or inventive but has no sense of organization or detail. Now, imagine a planner who can take a goal down to specific steps and dates. A strategy can be thought of as the combination of these two types of thinking. Strategic thinking must utilize some creative thought on what to do with planned goals to reach a broader end result.

Let's use the example that you want to focus on niche marketing. A strategy could be that you would first learn niche marketing by creating an information product of interviews with successful marketers who have developed niche sites. You as the interviewer start with little knowledge, but through the interviews you have started learning how to approach niche development, tips and tricks, and best topic areas. With that information you can create a simple, low-cost ebook to sell online. Now, your strategy has just started to gel learning the business through interviews, learning how to package an information product, starting to get your name known by others in that same area. This is an example of the creative thinking needed to build something successful. Next, you could start building your own niche websites and blog on how you achieved them using much of the knowledge you learned from your interviews. You've now reached even more strategic growth - others will want to learn from your blog while you learn even more with your niche sites. As you can see this type of strategy to start learning and earning money online can continue to grow and blossom into a full-fledged online business. With some creative thought around how to learn, grow, and achieve, then plan some significant milestones, you can then understand how strategic thinking can lead to real success.

What motivated you to write The On-Demand Brand? As someone charged with engaging consumers in branded experiences, I began to realize just how desperate we as marketers are to connect with today’s iPhone-toting, Facebook-hopping, videogame fragging, Twitter-tapping, I-want-what-I-want, righthere-and-nowgeneration. As the pace of change accelerates, many marketers feel themselves falling behind. The fact is, we have a consumer republic today that is simply and relentlessly tuning out media – and by extension, brand marketers – who fail to appeal to their interests and to their increasingly interconnected, digital lifestyles. As a result, all of us have felt the stress of having to pretend we’re hip to all things digital. And all of us are guilty, at least once, of chasing after “what’s cool” long after consumers have moved on. So I took a look at who seems to be doing it right – and then interviewed literally hundreds of today’s most innovative marketers to see what they’re doing right, what they’ve done wrong, and what can be learned from it all. What I began to realize is that it’s not merely about tracking the latest consumer trends and technologies. And marketers aren’t out of the loop just because they don’t understand everything digital yet. What became crystal clear is that many marketers simply lack the tools – the philosophical framework – to create the kind of experiences consumers want and demand in the digital era. THE ON-DEMAND BRAND is designed to change all that. 2. In Rule #3 (Don't Just Join the Conversation – Spark It) you make an interesting point: "Just because social networking is hot, that doesn't mean it's right for your brand". How can this be evaluated to know what, if any, social media approach should be used for a given brand? The single most important factor in digital marketing success is finding out who your customers are and how they use digital media in general, and in this instance, social media in particular. You might be surprised at what you find.

"The idea is to have the kind of engaged environment that you might find on the blogger platforms, like Facebook and MySpace, but very specifically targeted at the tribe of motherhood,"she says.

Did you know: Although the MP3 standard was invented in 1991, it wouldn’t be until 1998 that the first music file-sharing service Napster, would go live, and change the way the Internet was used forever.

wmm ask the expert Just as an example, I think most people would say that in order to reach teens, it’s essential to have a Twitter presence. Well, not necessarily. Depending on the specific target group, Twitter might be all wrong. According to comScore, only 11 percent of Twitter’s users are between the ages of twelve and seventeen. By contrast, 83 percent of teens use text messaging – making mobile a far more useful channel for reaching this audience. Likewise, some may think Facebook may not be a good way to reach older Americans. But the fastest growing segment of Facebook users is women 55 years and up. And these are just in the aggregate. Depending on your unique consumer base, you may find a channel or mix of channels that is very specific to your needs. In the book, I point to two examples – one good and one bad – from the same company. You can visit Procter & Gamble’s Facebook page for 2X Extra Tide detergent and “share your favorite places for stain making moments.” You could also poke yourself in the eye with a stick. I’m not sure who it’s aimed at, but it’s more a cautionary example than a laudatory one. At the same time, P&G has tapped into research on how young girls and women use social media. Nearly 70 percent of American girls ages 15-17 have built and routinely update profile pages on websites like MySpace and Facebook. Some 35 percent of girls have their own blogs, compared to 20 percent of boys. And thirty-two percent of girls have their own websites, compared to 22 percent of their male counterparts. While the breakdown of gender participation in these kinds of activities approaches parity in adulthood, women are more likely to use them as a means of fostering and maintaining nurturing, empowering emotional connections with others. So P&G created BeingGirl.com a social site designed for teen girls and sponsored by the company’s feminine products brands. Unlike the communities built around Tide, there’s no overt selling on the site, which is designed to enable girls to discuss the issues they face at that age – music, cliques, dealing with parents, puberty and so on. What’s more, girls can ask a professional psychologist questions that are then shared with the community. Answers are provided with subtle branding lines about how BeingGirl.com is brought to you by Always Pads & Panty Liners and Tampax Tampons. They can also order free samples of the company’s products should they desire. According to P&G, this site four times as effective per dollars spent as advertising. It’s been so successful, in fact, that the company has now replicated the site in 21 different countries. It’s all about finding out who your customers are, how they use digital media, and what kinds of experiences – and communities - they’re looking for. 3. Would you explain what you mean by "products are the new services"? Well, you might not recognize it by taste alone, but Coors Light isn’t just a beer anymore. It’s a portfolio of Facebook apps that enable you to access maps that direct your “brew crew” to nearby bars – or MySpace pages where you can locate happy hours in your geographic area and upload pictures of your posse for the chance to win prizes. For that matter, Chantix isn’t just a smoking-cessation drug anymore, either. You’re sparking that conversation in an entertaining way.

And look no further than Johnson & Johnson’s BabyCenter, a hugely successful online community that reaches 78 percent of all online women who are pregnant or are mothers of children under 24 months old. As BabyCenter’s Chairwoman Tina Sharkey tells me in the book, “More moms go through BabyCenter in a month in the U.S., than there are babies born in the U.S. in a year.” Over the last few years, Sharkey has led BabyCenter as it has expanded its offerings to include expert advice, research and articles based on a child’s age, to foster community among moms so women have a place where they can share pictures, find people like them, write blogs, share comments, pass on motherly advice and more. "The idea is to have the kind of engaged environment that you might find on the blogger platforms, like Facebook and MySpace, but very specifically targeted at the tribe of motherhood,"she says. Now, these consumers could go to the site and rip on J&J, and they probably do. Although starting an entrepreneurial venture online can be as daunting as starting it offline, at the long run it can provide many benefits that an offline business can't. So, if you are still interested to start a business online, even after knowing that it will require quite some effort, go for it. No More Selling Scripts? 5 Ways to Be Yourself Again By Ari Galper, Creator of Unlock The Game®

Last week I was sitting at my desk and the phone rang.

I picked it up and said, “Hello, this is Ari.” The caller said. “Hi, Ari, my name is Steve, how are you today?” I knew right away that he was using a structured sales script, and that triggered the negative “salesperson” stereotype in my mind. I didn’t want to hurt his feelings so I let him continue with his pitch for a few minutes. Then I gently said, “Hi, Steve.” He was so startled that he completely stopped speaking. He had no idea how to react to my simple, normal greeting. Why? Because he was totally focused on his selling script and not on my reaction to it.

As soon as they start reading their script, a couple of things happen. I hear their voices go up in volume so they sound enthusiastic. They also talk faster, and their voice takes on a canned, robotic quality. All these things trigger the negative “salesperson” stereotype. After a few moments, I gently stop them and tell them they’re sounding like a totally different person from the one who called me and talked with me so naturally about their sales issues.

You know what they always say? “Ari, you are so right. When I use a script, I feel as if I can’t be myself. I feel like a robot or an actor, and it’s very awkward and uncomfortable. Is there any way I can be myself again?”

If you’ve been selling for a while, chances are you’ve been asked to use sales scripts to make cold calls. And even if you feel scripts are unnatural and impersonal, you’ve probably used them anyway because they were the only way you knew to start a conversation with prospects.

Here are 5 ways to throw out your linear selling script and be yourself again:

Maybe you’ve even made some sales using scripts.

When you begin your sales script, prospects detect the very subtle change from your natural voice to your unnatural scripted voice within seconds. “Fine,” you might say, “I’ll just work on making myself sound natural.” But that in itself creates a conflict.

But here are some questions you need to ask yourself. • • •

How do you really feel when you use a script? How do your prospects feel when they know you’re using a script? (And they do know.) Most important, how many sales are you losing because you’re using a script?

When people call me and ask how they can throw out their scripts and cold call the natural way, the first thing I do is ask them whether they’re willing to role-play with me using their script.

1. Admit that scripts make you sound “scripted.”

The first step is to realize and admit that you can’t “work at” being natural. However, you can let go of your script as a crutch. The idea may sound scary at first because you’ve been programmed to believe you have to have a script to make a successful cold call. It is possible to learn another way to make calls without a linear step-by-step script.


WMM 45 2. Start your cold call as a conversation, not a one-way pitch.

If you’re used to scripts, you’re probably shaking your head and wondering, “How the heck will I know what to say without a script?” You might want to ask yourself why you think you won’t know what to say, because the reason for that is important. It means you’re basing your call on what you have to offer -- and not on what’s important to the prospect, because you haven’t found that out yet. Pitching your solution as soon as you begin a call is one of the biggest problems with linear sales scripts because you trigger sales pressure and cause prospects to react with defensiveness or even abrupt, immediate rejection. Here’s another option. Write down 2 or 3 core issues or real problems (not benefits or features) that your product or service solves. Then take that “problem statement,” as I call it, and put it into words your prospect can understand. In fact, the wording should be so familiar to your prospects (because those are the words they use every day in their business) that when you start discussing the issue, they’ll feel a sense of comfort knowing that your mental focus is on helping them solve problems, not on making the sale. 3. Create openings rather than forcing a “yes.” Selling scripts are designed to be linear and step by step so you can move calls in the direction you want them to go. From the traditional selling point of view, that direction is toward a “yes,” because if you don’t get a “yes” at the beginning of the cold call, you’re not “selling.” But that’s the biggest problem with scripts. They give you only one path to follow. If you can start a conversation that triggers a “What do you mean?” response from your prospect, you’ll find you can explain yourself in a natural way that creates a two-way dialogue, which in turn lets you learn what you need to find out by flowing with the conversation, without feeling you’re getting off-track. Developing your problem statement makes this much easier. 4. Tape-record yourself talking with someone you know. Then record yourself reading your script. Have you ever heard yourself calling a prospect and reading your script? Probably not. That’s why most people who use scripts think they sound natural. They’ve never heard themselves. But if you do this simple exercise, you’ll hear the same kinds of differences I hear when people role-play with me. In our day-to-day personal relationships, we simply want to get to know and communicate with others. But when we go into sales situations using scripts, we have an agenda -- to make the sale. And because scripts trigger the perception that that’s all we want, the people you talk with sense this immediately and put up their guard.

Between our hidden agenda and their reaction, there’s no chance to build trust through communication. Also, because we've been taught for so long that we have to control the process, we never stop to think that scripts make it impossible for us to be flexible in how we communicate and build trust. 5. Set a new goal for your calls. Focus on simply opening the conversation rather than trying to control it, so prospects will feel comfortable telling you the truth about their situation. Does surrendering your use of a script seem scary? Try this alternative and see how it feels. Begin the conversation with “Hi, maybe you can help me out for a moment...” Most people will respond with something like, “Sure, how can I help?” You can say, “I’m just calling to see if (problem statement)...,” which makes it easy for the prospect to reply, “What do you mean?” or “Tell me more.” And after that, the possibilities of your conversation are endless. What do I mean by this? If you target their issues, create a conversation around the problems or issues you know they’re facing, and explain how your solution solves those problems -- in a conversation that is completely void of sales pressure -- prospects will share their truth with you. They’ll tell you whether solving the issue is a priority, whether they have the resources to commit to it, and everything else you need to know.

When you let go of a linear script, you’ll find that you’ll no longer fumble for words if prospects get “off track” by taking the conversation away from your sales process and into their buying process. In fact, that’s exactly what you hope they’ll do, because that means they’re telling you the truth. Now that you understand why linear step-by-step scripts create the negative “salesperson” stereotype by making it impossible for you to be your natural self, you can begin learning how to engage total strangers on the phone in ways that feel as comfortable as calling a friend. Yes, it’s possible, and don’t let anyone tell you it’s not.

Nicola Cairncross: Welcome everyone, it’s Nicola Cairncross here from The Business Success Factory. I’m delighted today to be joined by a very good friend of mine and a member of my Mastermind Group, Minesh Bhindi. Hello Minesh, how are you?

Minesh Bhindi: I’m good, thank you for having me Nicola. Nicola Cairncross: Thank you for doing this at such short notice. As I say, I just realised very suddenly I needed you in my book! Basically, this new book is all about success, business success in particular, and I’m interviewing people who I know to be genuinely successful as opposed to standing up on stage saying they’re successful. Minesh, I will delve deep if you don’t mind and do feel free to take a few seconds to think about the answers if you need to. Minesh Bhindi: Yes, no worries. Nicola Cairncross: Who is Minesh Bhindi as a person, where does he live, how old is he? What kind of background does he come from, who are you?

Minesh Bhindi: I started off when I was 16, some say I was lucky. I think I was, in a big way, to have a dad who gave me Rich Dad Poor Dad when I was 14, and then also made me follow through and didn’t sort of give up when I was rebelling as a teen. Yes, I think that I was very lucky with that. So, I’m a London boy, grew up in East London, literally started delving into different sort of wealth creation systems. Started off with property because that’s what my dad was mainly into and that’s what he coached me with, and then sort of grew into the stock market. So we do a sort of variety of different things, we also have the investing education business, etc. So, Minesh Bhindi is just a normal guy who found some opportunities and decided to capitalise on those.

Nicola Cairncross: Coming back to what you said there, my next question is normally what did you do before, whatever you’re doing now, but obviously you were at school. Minesh Bhindi: I was school. In fact, yes, I started doing this while I was in school. So, by the time I left school I already had investments and cash flow coming in. Nicola Cairncross: How did you manage that? Minesh Bhindi: To be honest, by concentrating on that more than concentrating on the school work. Now that’s obviously not going to sound helpful to a lot of young people that want to do this or want to do something like this. But I have to admit, the more I started concentrating on entrepreneurship the grades did get hit a little bit. It’s just a case of fact, you cannot concentrate on more than one thing fully. So, that’s what happened. Nicola Cairncross: You knew you didn’t want to go on to college by that stage then? Minesh Bhindi: Yes, I knew I didn’t want to go to university. The point at which I knew I didn’t want to go to university was there was scheme in high school called Young Enterprise, and by then I already had a business running and I was already generating income. So I saw this scheme and I was like, “Hey, this might be fun, let’s go and have a look at it,” because I was still unsure about whether I wanted to do it full time or what. I went into that and I ended up being thrown into the deep end of managing a team of 24 people on that project. That sort of solidified my decision. At that point I knew that I didn’t want to go into a job. Before that I wanted to become a corporate lawyer because I thought they all wore really nice suits and make lots of money. But obviously, the movies always say one thing and the real life is slightly different. Nicola Cairncross: Did you know then what your core strengths are, and what would you say they are now? Minesh Bhindi: This is a hard one, I think my core strength is the fact that I’m personally quite confident. I don’t really worry about people’s pre-judgments of me or anything like that, and I think that was very good. I started doing my first presentations at seminars when I was 16 or 17 in front of people that were 30-40-50 plus. So I think that lack of fear is probably my core strength. It’s the lack of fear, I just don’t have any of that. Nicola Cairncross: Do you think that is a core strength or do you think it’s was the way you were brought up? Minesh Bhindi: This goes back to the nature versus nurture of it, but for me it’s a natural thing. I do think everyone has the same set of skills. It’s in your environment that you grew up with, which skills get worked on more. I think that was already in me, but I think it was brought out more by the things that I was doing. Nicola Cairncross: Yes, because I remember meeting you when you were pretty young, you must be about 14. Your dad was doing some of the talking, but you were also quite keen to stand up and have your say weren’t you? Minesh Bhindi: Yes, I’ve never been the type of person to actually sit down and listen to what other people have to say, even in school I was always asking the teachers. For example, math, when the hell am I going to actually use pythagoras theorems in real life? I’ve always been like that, I’ve never sort of sat down and sort of taken people’s word for what it is without sort of adding my own spices. Nicola Cairncross: Again, my next question is a bit redundant because I was going to say how did you come across investing in property and in the stock market and what made you decide to get involved, but your dad obviously introduced you to it. He was very successful in property first, was he investing in the stock market or is that something you learned about together? inesh Bhindi: No, he’s been investing in the stock market for about the same time he’s been investing in property. It was just that at that time, six or seven years ago, property was the only thing you could use to print – it was like a license to print money. You could get cash-back deals, etc. In fact the first deal that I did was a big deal. It was a million pounds of property, £68,000 cash-back, and a quarter of a million in equity at the age of 17-18. For somebody to be able to do that then, that opportunity is not around anymore.


WMM 48 Nicola Cairncross: For now.

Minesh Bhindi: For now, yes. I bet it will come back, but it’s not around right now. That’s why we were heavily into property when you met us, but we’ve been investing in the stock market for about the same time as we’ve been investing in property. Nicola Cairncross: Good, because my next question was going to be what did you do first in the early days, and obviously that first deal was a big one. Again, it probably made you more confident. What did you go on to do after that? Minesh Bhindi: The very first thing that I did was we used to source property for investors. Really it was a cover to buy our own properties, but in order to get a big enough discount we had to buy 15-20 units. So, we just sort of had an investment club I would say, something like that, where it’s just a base of that 40-50 closed investor friends. We literally went out and negotiated deals and bought the whole lot up. That’s what I actually first started doing, I actually first started negotiating property deals at the age of 16. That’s the first thing that I did. So, I was on the phone talking to sales managers and negotiating deals. I think that’s what also gave me some confidence when you can negotiate £50,000 off a property from somebody who is 55 and you’re 16. Nicola Cairncross: Yes, that would give you confidence. Okay, my next question is what did you find surprisingly easy about it all? Minesh Bhindi: About what part? Nicola Cairncross: Any parts, which bits of it did you find particularly easy and what were you doing at that time? The negotiating obviously, anything else? Minesh Bhindi: I just find it very, very easy to help people, if that makes sense. I don’t want to say help people and actually do it for them, I want to help them learn to do it for themselves. This is a better way to put it from my own personal experience. I found it very, very easy to find paths of success and then just walk along them and then get the same results; i.e. modelling for example, but I don’t think it was exactly that because you sort of add your own style to it. At the same time, when I saw that, that it was so easy to walk this path, I wanted to share it straightaway which then developed the educational side. Nicola Cairncross: Interesting answer because so many people resist walking a successful path, they want to change it or do it differently or make it go a different way. Minesh Bhindi: I guess it depends on what you’re in love with. Some people are in love with the struggle and some people are in love with the reward. I’m one of the guys who are in love with the rewards, I don’t care what needs to happen to get to the reward as long as you get there. Nicola Cairncross: Yes, you’re not attached to the doing it your way. On the opposite side of the coin, what did you find surprisingly difficult? Minesh Bhindi: What did I find difficult? In all honesty I found managing effectively three different businesses, three different models at the age of 18 while still at schools doing A-levels very difficult. So one thing I have learned to do is set up systems now. I found that part of it very difficult, how to systematise everything that you’re doing and not have you involved in the system. Nicola Cairncross: Cool. Were you managing people in the business by then while you were still doing you’re A-levels? Minesh Bhindi: Yes. We had employees, we had mortgage brokers to deal with, solicitors to deal with, surveyors to deal with. We were doing the whole package when it comes to property, and that was just very, very hard. I’m not even going to lie, it was very hard. One of the reasons why it was hard, I was making it hard for myself in that I wanted to do everything. That’s one thing I had to learn. Nicola Cairncross: What did it take for you to realise that you couldn’t do everything, you had to get other people to help and that you needed your systems? Did you have a couple of disasters or was it just a gradual… Minesh Bhindi: A couple of things, one was it’s not really a disaster and the other one was really a great thing. The disaster in that comment was when we started getting complaints from customers about the service, people going on and writing on these stupid online forums, etc. That really got me, especially at 18. At that point I realised we need to set up systems, it’s not just a one-man thing that can be done. No matter how many people we have, I can’t be the end all face of it basically. So it has to be a business not just a personality. That helps a lot in a big way, but it was very good because we quickly adapted. This is one thing I don’t get about people, that in real-life problems they sit and think about them for too long, and by then the problem get so big that they can’t handle it. That was one thing.
