What's the deal with Facebook Ads? I've had some success with Google ads in the past and am considering trying advertising with Facebook. I've heard the ads can be highly targeted due to all the info they have on us. I don't really want to waste a whole lot of money for no return, but by the same token, I don't want to let a good opportunity slip by. Can you offer any pointers? - Shonna
We have had very limited success with Facebook ads. Our belief is that users of Facebook go to the site for very specific reasons. i.e they are not shopping. Having said that, you need to test, test, test. Set your keywords, set your targeting and set your daily budget, and see how you go! - Ed.
Which Autoresponder?
Everyone I talk to says I have to have an autoresponder to be able to follow up with my prospects and customers. This makes perfectly good sense to me so i am definitely going to get one. My main problem at the moment is that there are so many different options on the market that I am just getting confused. Should I be going fora hosted service, or should I purchase software and put it on my own server? How do I know if my emails are going to get delivered with a particular service? - Zeek.

wmm news HOW GOOGLE+ IS LIKE TWITTER—BUT NOT IN A GOOD WAY Like Twitter, Google's social network has yet to solve some challenging problems. Among them: the "noisy stream" and how to find interesting content Tech blogger Robert Scoble, the king of the earlyadopter crowd, hasposted some thoughts about what he likes and doesn’t like about using Google+, and some of his points hit home with me as well. And the more I thought about the new social network and the things it doesn’t do very well, the more similar it seemed to the issues that have also been dogging Twitter for some time. Like Twitter, the Web giant has to figure out how to solve some pretty challenging problems— including the "noisy stream" issue, the problems of search and discovery, and, of course, how to keep people from going away and never coming back.
THE PROBLEM OF DISCOVERY All of this points to what might be the biggest issue for both networks, and that is the problem of discovery. In other words, how do users find people to follow and how do they find content that interests them? Highlighting content that gets lots of responses is one way, and notifying users about this is another, but both of those features can also be irritating. Google suggests users to follow based on who is in your Circles, just as Twitter suggests people you might be interested in, but these approaches are also flawed in many ways (one user complained about Google repeatedly suggesting her ex-husband).

Success Story Name:Laurie Meyers Can you tell us a bit about your company? What inspired you to start CouponSense.com? CouponSense.com started in February of 1998. I had a couponing hobby and was sharing the great deals with my friends. One week I called 12 people and told them how they could get batteries for $0.50 a pack and they were so excited. The light bulb went on. I wondered if people would pay for this kind of information. Home computers and the ensuing technology finally caught up with my hobby and I was able to create CouponSense.com with the help of two other moms and a great computer programmer. After 6 weeks, the other moms couldn’t manage their families and a startup, so I took on the business by myself. In many ways, working as an individual instead of a team was easier as we weren’t worried about schedules and decisions. What did you do prior to starting CouponSense? What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far in starting and running a business? The biggest lesson I’ve learned in starting and running a business is how capable I am and to trust my instincts. What do you find most exciting about being an entrepreneur?
I guess the most exciting thing about being an entrepreneur is helping people and having flexibility with my schedule. I also enjoy the flexibility of starting my day at 5:30AM in my robe, exercising in the middle of the day and finishing work after dinner. Do you think being an entrepreneur makes it easier or harder to balance your work and family responsibilities? Why? Balance as an entrepreneur has been a challenge for me. When my kids were younger and in school, I could get my work done before their school day ended. Then I was available to focus on the needs of my family. For me, I’m more productive working from home as I don’t have the distractions of co-workers and the ensuing friendly chit chat. As the business has grown, so has my workload which has changed as I am now the chief decision maker. In many ways, I find the process of decision making emotionally exhausting so by the end of the day, I don’t want to make any more decisions including what to fix for dinner. I’m trying to work on balance in my life. I’ve scheduled in time for daily exercise with friends. I also have a goal to read books for pleasure and to watch more movies. Do you work at an office or from home? What are the positives and negatives of this arrangement? Working from home has definite pluses like rolling out of bed and going straight to work, I’m an early riser and I would rather put in time at my desk than in traffic. Domestic responsibilities can be done throughout the day – laundry, dishes, starting dinner, etc. I like that walking out of the office for a break I can get things done before my family comes home so we aren’t racing around at the end of the day, home is a fairly relaxed environment at the end of the day. I need that as much as my family members do. There are challenges when the office is a room away. It makes turning off business mode difficult, especially in the evenings and weekends. Also, it’s a distraction to have employees in and out of my home throughout the day. Sometimes, I miss the quietness of having home be home, but, the perks of being close to the office outweigh any of the challenges. What other lessons can you share to other women entrepreneurs? Women entrepreneurs are amazing! One of the best lessons I learned was that I can hire and surround myself with people that are smarter than me. There are lots of smart people who are not risk oriented. They aren’t willing to start the business and take on the risk that an entrepreneur is willing to take – hire those people and know that it is ok that you don’t have to have all of the answers. When people know you trust them, few will disappoint and their performance will continue to rise because they know you believe in them. How do you see your business 5 years from now? In five years I hope that CouponSense.com will have a strong national presence. We are working on expansion and hope to continue to see growth throughout the USA.

Selling someone else's products means that you don't need to set up a pay button, the link will take the visitor to the seller's site. Never promote a product that you have not used or know nothing about, your recommendations reflect on you and your reputation is at stake. If the product turns out to be useless, you lose your credibility and your customers. So, it is possible to start a business online without your own website. However, having your own site opens up so many more possibilities.
How To Get Started With An Online Business?
You are not subject to Terms and Conditions, you do not have to worry about breaking any rules. You are your own master.
Everyone tells you that you need a website to start your online business. Well, it might be desirable to have your own website, but it is not essential.
You can have a much more attractive site which is very easy to set up and you can basically do what you like with it.
You CAN start an online business without a website. There are several ways to start a business online.
You can have a static website or a blog depending whether you want to be interactive with your customers or not. A blog is more personal, you can get to know your visitors by their comments.
If you can't afford your own website, you could start on eBay or eBid with little or no initial start up costs. Depending what options you use, you would only have very small insertion fees. The advantage of using eBay or eBid is that you can sell items you no longer use or clothes that no longer fit. The first sales will generate capital to enable you to buy stock at wholesale prices. The Trader Magazine advertises a variety of wholesalers. These wholesalers are usually strictly trade suppliers, but as you are setting up your own business, you are a trade customer.
Initially, you have to forget about making money and offer free reports or guides to get people to join your mailing lists. Once you have your subscriber list, try not to bombard them with sales pitch every day. Build their trust by offering free tips and information and you will have loyal subscribers. You can build a Squidoo lens, write articles and submit them to article directories with back links to your lens. You can then have affiliate links for people to click on. Never use a direct affiliate link in your article, it won't get published. WMM

In addition to having written and published a best-selling cookbook, Soul Food Recipes Learned On a North Carolina Tobacco Farm, and a best-selling inspirational biography, Git Off The Porch, Willie has written over 250 articles on building a successful Internet-based or home-based business.
ALBERT [Q:] Willie, you’re one of the pioneer online, very respected and well known all over the internet, you’ve helped thousands of people to start their own successful Online Business. But just for the record… Can you please tell us a little bit about yourself? What did you do before you became involved in Online Business and Internet Marketing? WILLIE [A:] After growing up on a tobacco farm and making my way through college with a degree in Business (with a heavy concentration on Economics) I went into the U.S. Air Force. In the Air Force, I was a crew member on C-130 transports, which allowed me to travel to more than 47 different countries. Which I had a full career in the Air Force and did fairly well, in 1996, I was ready to start my own business. I did that by surfing the internet in my spare time, filtering what I discovered through common sense, and just got started. I built my first websites using site builders on some of the free hosting services, read a lot of ezines and just started DOING! ALBERT [Q:] Was there a particular reason that you chose this avenue of Online Business? WILLIE [A:] I was told that you needed a niche. My list or people swapping recipes asked if I had a cookbook, so I wrote one. Using basic Internet marketing techniques, that quickly grew to six figures and garnered the attention of some in the Internet marketing world. That pulled me back into teaching what actually works in Internet marketing. ALBERT [Q:] How long did it take for your Online Business to start making profit? I earn a little money right from the start. WILLIE [A:] My cooking site was always profitable. ALBERT [Q:] Everybody makes mistakes in the beginning. What were the worst mistakes you made that prevented you from generating profit? And what did you learn from it? WILLIE [A:] I took too long to register my own domain names. Using throwaway emails and free hosting meant that it took me longer to build credibility. I often joined affiliate programs for Internet marketing products and then advertised those products in the same ezines that everyone else was advertising the same products. It became a contest of who could create the cleverest ad for the same product. That was insane! ALBERT [Q:] Willie, I’ve really wanted to ask you this for a long time even before I started NetBizReview.com What is your secret recipe for being number # 1 in all of the major search engines? And what tools or resources do you use? WILLIE [A:] The secret is just basic webpage optimization. Each of my pages that ranks #1 really focuses on just one keyword phrase and everything about that page is very focused. Many of my pages have lot of relevant external links pointing to them. Those links are often the result of forum posts, articles, press releases, and in a few cases, link exchanges. For SEO, I’ve used WebPosition Gold. Right now I primarily use SEO Elite, but I don’t focus on search engine optimization very much. It’s too time consuming. ALBERT [Q:] There is a tremendous demand for Joint Venture and affiliate programs choosing the right one is not easy. So what is your procedure or screening process on choosing the right Joint Venture or affiliate programs . WILLIE [A:] I simply look for things that I know my list or website visitors will want. I look at what they have purchased from me in the past, what they ask me for in emails, and what problems they talk about on the discussion boards. That tells me what to sell them. If something is not selling, I simply stop trying to sell that item. It’s the same for joint ventures and affiliate products. I do look for fresh products that I know my lists will appreciate me telling them about. I look for things that I know will improve their lives. ALBERT [Q:] Joint Venture and affiliate programs are really creating a buzz on the internet and many established online merchants are now turning to Joint Venture strategies as a means of maximizing their profit. But we wanted to ask an expert like you. Can you actually make money through Joint Venture, and HOW?

wmm ask the expert WILLIE [A:] Yes. Joint ventures allow you to reach people that you otherwise couldn’t reach or that it would take you a long time to reach. The most common joint venture that I can think of is simply getting a list owner to promote your product to his list, usually for a higher than normal commission. It’s a special arrangement that you make with only a limited number of people The JV leverages off of the trust and the relationship that the list owner has with his customers. It also works because the list owner takes good care of his list members. ALBERT [Q:] And can you please tell us, what are the advantages of Joint Ventures? WILLIE [A:] It’s risk free, and win-win-win. The product owner doesn’t generally have to invest any money upfront to reach a lot of potential customers. The list owner earns a higher than normal commission, gets to tell his list about something that’s really going to help them, and with some products even sets up a residual income stream. The customer gets just the product that he needs, often at a bargain price! ALBERT [Q:] Do you think there’s room on Online Business for Newbie’s who want to start their own business? WILLIE [A:] Yes. The majority of the world still hasn’t discovered ecommerce or the Internet. It’s only going to grow and billions will be made. It’s just another product distribution channel but a very powerful one. It’s just important to get into the right business and to make sure that you’re selling something that people actually want! ALBERT [Q:] What special skills and tools does a newbie need to have to succeed with an Online Business? WILLIE [A:] A willingness to take risk. A burning desire to have a better life and a willingness to put in the effort that it takes. Also, the newbie needs to acknowledge that it is a business that will take a little time and hard work to figure out. Expect to start out slowly. You don’t really need any special tools or skills since you can learn it online and all you really need is access to a computer to get started. ALBERT [Q:] And are there any problems we should watch out for? WILLIE [A:] Yes. Don’t get involved in businesses where there’s just a pretty site, but YOU have trouble figuring out what it’s actually selling. Sites like those actually just sell a dream, and you’ll have a hard time explaining it to others. You can’t sell what you can’t even explain. Only sell things that you would personally buy. Look for things that people are already buying and offer them the same or similar products. Don’t innovate too much, it’s too expensive. ALBERT [Q:] Where do you see the Online Business headed? WILLIE [A:] It will grow extremely fast, and will probably grow faster in other countries than in the U.S. China is just starting to wake up for example, and they now have the world’s second highest online population. It’s just going to become more of a global marketplace, and with the right product (something people want and are willing to pay for), you can do extremely well.

wmm ask the expert ALBERT [Q:] What do you see as some of the biggest challenges facing Online Business over the next couple of years? WILLIE [A:] Getting your email delivered as spammer cause ISPs to fitter email heavier and heavier. There will always be scammers and dishonest people looking to make a quick buck off the unsuspecting. So, I see that as always being a problem, especially since the internet allows digital product to readily flow across international lines. ALBERT [Q:] What are your future plans? Will you set up new business or services? Any big projects? WILLIE [A:] I have a membership site at TheInternetMarketingInnerCircle.com that I will really focus on the first half of 2007. I’m also very active in The International Association of Joint Venture Brokers. I’ll help them to make that who industry more professional, with more unified standards. I’ll help do that by working with and providing guidance throughInternationalAssociationOfJointVentureBrokers.com I’m launching a television cooking show, with a partner in the Spring. I’m rolling out a course detailing how I earned $1 million in 90 days using ordinary Internet marketing techniques. I’ll probably release that course in late January. I do and will continue speaking at a lot of seminars in the U.S., The U.K., Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and will probably venture into Thailand, The Philippines, China, and South America soon. ALBERT [Q:] Before we say goodbye, can you tell me what has been the most rewarding experience of your Affiliate Marketing Business career, and why? WILLIE [A:] It’s teaching others how to find affiliate products that will actually sell, and then showing them methods of selling them that work best. I’ve watched a lot of affiliates spend too much time using ineffective marketing methods and trying to sell items that the marketplace simply didn’t want. It broke my heart to see people struggle so hard to reach their dream while charging down the wrong trail! ALBERT [Q:] For our final thought, what advice would you have for our faithful readers & subscribers who are starting out with their own online business? WILLIE [A:] Only sell products that you really believe will better your customers lives. Only sell products that your customers tell you that they want. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. We all make mistakes. Just don’t keep making the same mistakes over and over again. As soon as you can, get out and meet other online business people. Seminars and conferences are the best place to do this. Just associating with people doing the exact same thing that you’re doing and discovering that you don’t have to do it all yourself, will change your life. BEWARE THE UPSELL - HOW ONLINE FREEBIES BECOME NOT SO FREE By: Scott Butera An "up-sell" is a secondary offer made after you have already accepted an initial offer. Most times the up-sell compliments or expands upon the benefits of the initial offer. The up-sell is often more expensive than the initial offer and quite often an up-sell is attached to a freebie. You are given the freebie and then told, "By the way here is a paid offer that we thought you'd be interested in." Companies often give you a real freebie online to get you to a sales page for their paid offer. They know that a certain percentage of the people who see the up-sell will open their wallet and pull out their credit card. If you click on the magic words No Thanks! - you still get the freebie but the seller is counting on a certain percentage of you to buy the up-sell. One trick that I use when looking for real freebies online is to keep my wallet and credit cards in the bedroom in a dresser drawer. This way I actually have to think about the purchase. The act of getting up from my computer desk and breaking the hypnotic connection between my weak brain and the mesmerizing computer screen is all it takes for me to realize what is happening to me and force me to ask myself, "Do I really need this item or am I falling for a marketer's up-sell?" I get free offers in my email box every day and the other day I got an offer for a fishing magazine. Now I don't usually buy fishing magazines but the picture of the gal holding that huge silver king on the cover caught my attention. I decided to take advantage of the offer. I clicked the link and filed out the short form with my name and address and hit enter. Instead of "thank you" page I was taken to the up-sell page.
The offers on that page were really great deals, just $2.00 for a half year subscription to more than a dozen high quality magazines. As good as that offer looked, I didn't fall for it because, I know to beware of the devilish up-sell. If I had purchased even one of those $2.00 half year magazines subscriptions, at the end of the six months, I would continue to receive the magazine and been billed for the full price of the remaining half years subscription. Not only that, but once they had my credit card, they would have also continued the freebie magazine I ordered and charged my credit card for the half years full price on it as well. I would have turned an absolutely free magazine into a half price magazine. If you know anything about the magazine business, half price magazine subscriptions are available just about anywhere. I would have given up the real freebie for an up-sell gotcha. If you are looking for real freebies online you must be aware of the up-sell and not allow the free deal to become an expensive mistake. Improving Engagement With Wikis and Blogs By: Helene Russell
I was having coffee with a lawyer friend the other day who was struggling to improve engagement with a wiki she had set up a few months ago. She thought it was a great wiki, well designed, with plenty of useful content (and as a practising lawyer in the field herself, I'm sure she was right) but it still wasn't really engaging the other lawyers in the community of practice yet.

Use this technology with the right groups - the group needs the right level of trust, technical expertise/enthusiasm, the right culture and you must be able to address their privacy concerns. Use it for the right purpose - focus on a key problem that needs to be solved, which offers a tangible benefit. Sell the wiki to your lawyers by selling that benefit. Don't compromise on ease of use - don't enforce inflexible page templates, although some guidance may help new users; respond flexibly if the community starts to use the technology in different ways (as long as it furthers your business strategy of course). Use the right content - integrate with other technologies (RSS feeds, e-mail) as far as possible for maximum population for minimum effort, but make sure it is useful content; keep it useful & trustworthy - when people see the benefits, they will use the technology. Encourage contributions - encourage junior members of staff to contribute and respond positively to anyone who contributes, don't just accept their contributions; if possible, try not to have someone who is paid to populate the wiki or blog as fewer people will then bother ("but that is his/her job"); have an ongoing programme of reminders to staff and training about the wiki/blog's usefulness & how to use it; and use the personal touch - keep language friendly & avoid a "corporate" tone on blogs. Keep it trustworthy - fix links & typos, make sure content is relevant and quality is good. Get people comfortable with it - avoid technical language; get people started with something they are comfortable with, this could be a personal page, or a short Q&A/top tips article on a topic they know well; get people to use the wiki regularly, perhaps by including agendas for relevant meetings for people to discuss the meeting beforehand, or, at the very least, to visit once before the meeting. Let people choose roles that suit them - some may suit the "gardening" i.e. fixing links and typos, adding references and quotations; others may suit a "champion" role - encouraging its use by others. Once you have one or two successful groups, start to roll the programme out, using the first groups as mentors and champions. Measure your success

Assume that once you have built it, they will come - these always take time to get off the ground: don't get disheartened. Assume that one training session in "how to use it" will be enough - plan a programme of different types of training (group, individual, desk-based, team-based) on an ongoing basis. Control it too much - the biggest problem you are likely to face is that not enough people contribute and people only contribute their absolute highest quality, not that you have too much or inappropriate material. Forget to include a private place for people to draft their work - this is how many people, but lawyers in particular, like to work (draft and re-draft) so make sure they have the option to save a draft of their comment or blog post before publishing them. Think that you are creating or have to create Wikipedia - your wiki doesn't need to look like Wikipedia or have the same level of open editing if that doesn't suit your business's culture or your business's needs your wiki was created to meet your business needs, so do whatever suits your business. Their Background Mark Ling: Can you please give us some background for our viewers? That’s why my company (when it initially started up) is called The Success Doctor Incorporated. But now I’m mostly known as the copy doctor in lots of websites that I offer. But being an internet marketer myself and being with all of these top names, I met Sylvie. And Sylvie is a person who shares a lot of the same clients – in fact I became a client of hers. Now, I will let her tell you about her story. Sylvie Fortin: Workaholics4Hire has been around for quite some time. We were quiet for a very long time working for the top marketers – many of which also happens to be Michel’s clients. And it is how we met, he became a client and eventually, we started dating and here we are today. But what a lot of people don’t realize is that being behind the scenes like we’ve been, we’ve seen a lot of what the marketers do – what works and what doesn’t work. And while working on client accounts, the bell starts to go off in your head when your job is to optimize a marketing strategy, launch a certain campaign, or do the Google Adwords– any of these things – developing the websites, writing articles, etc. These are many of the tasks that workaholics4hire do. And in the process of doing that, you realize just how much money is there to be made. Then I put the connection together a few years ago when it dawned on me that I just don’t want to be the person being hired (to get paid) to do the tasks. I realized that if we did the tasks for ourselves (and if he wrote the copy for ourselves), then we would be the marketers – instead of just the people supporting the marketers. So Michel and I, when we got together, decided that we are going to make a very big difference in the way that we approach our career. So we started to market different strategies and do a lot of different things with the goal of making our business run as much on its own as it can, with as much passive revenue as it possibly could. So that’s what brought us here today. Mark Ling: That’s wonderful. You’ve obviously got a very inspiring entrepreneurial mindset that brought you all of these ideas out of your experiences. Sylvie Fortin: We love what we do.

Ideal Business Model Mark Ling: In a nutshell, what is the ideal business model and how does that relate to affiliate marketing? Sylvie Fortin: Well, the ideal business model to us is always going to be as easy as possible, as easy to duplicate as you could possibly make it, and as passive as possible. Essentially, our goal is – we want to have (and we are already well on our way) a variety of websites that run completely independent of one another. Testing various things, but once they’re set up, you can leave them alone, they just make money on their own. I think that a marketer’s goal shouldn’t be to wake up in the morning and have to work 16-18 hours a day. Why would that be our goal? We walked away from the corporate world specifically to avoid having to be forced to wake up and do what you don’t like doing. Michel Fortin: We left our soul-sucking cubicle. Sylvie Fortin: Exactly. So why would our home office be its own soul-sucking cubicle. So our goal is to set up as many different streams of income as possible. They can run completely independent and do it completely on their own – passively. Michel Fortin: And affiliate marketing enables you to create these small little businesses which are self-sustaining – they work by themselves and are continuously promoting affiliate products but at the same time generating passive income on a continuous and consistent basis. So, what Sylvie is saying is also something that we repeat a lot. The ideal business model is one that’s easy to build, easy to maintain, easy to grow, and easy to duplicate. That’s the ideal business. Mark Ling: Yeah, that’s one of the biggest reasons why people want to be an affiliate as well (like you’re saying about not wanting to be in a cubicle at work). And, they don’t want the customer support that’s involved with running your own product and that kind of thing. They want to be able to build websites and have them run on auto-pilot and have them grow by themselves. Sylvie Fortin: Exactly.
BLOGS Mark Ling: That’s funny you say that because I’ve always found that in blogging with newsletters – the best response is if you put some emotion in it, like you tell a story. Michel Fortin: You tell a story and along the way in your story, you basically put in affiliate links. You’re basically promoting, but in the most subtle way. The difference is, rather than if you try to pitch in the whole product and tell them why they need to buy it, I’ll say, here’s my experience. "Oh, by the way if you’re interested in knowing what it is, here’s my affiliate link." It’s different because it’s almost like a third party – it’s more objective even though it’s not. Sylvie Fortin: And it’s more believable. You know, I’ve found that if someone feels they can connect with the writer, they will respond more with what the writer is telling them. There’s a rule in marketing that if you can get your audience to know, love, and trust you – they will buy anything that you have to sell them. And that’s absolutely true. I would personally rather spend less money to develop a warm market that enjoys what I’m saying. As opposed to spending a lot of money to try and reach a cold market that’s never heard of me. I would rather spend more money and time in developing that warm relationship – a print and a blog is the perfect opportunity to do that. The audience can easily interact with you, even if you don’t actually exist. Michel Fortin: Plus, each article has the ability to have comments added to it. Therefore, making the page different and reducing the whole duplicate content issue.

The Importance Of The Keyword And Search Engines By Richard S Wilk Anyone who owns an online business - whether it sells products and services or specializes in "internet marketing" will know the importance of a well laid out marketing plan. Showing similarities with the offline business world, a website whose owner has not properly considered how to promote their website is likely to experience problems competing with other businesses in their market. There are several methods of website promotion, but one of the most successful is called search engine optimization (or SEO for short). SEO has a number of facets, but it is primarily concerned with the keyword and search engines. Before beginning one's promotion efforts, a thorough research of the market in which your business operates should be undertaken. This might include competitor research, analysis of customer demographics or any of the other "standard" analysis that a prudent business owner would conduct. However, within the world of online marketing, the most important stage in this process is called keyword research. Getting to the Truth is What Brings You More Sales You’ll need to be open to a new mindset that allows you to focus on creating trust first, before focusing on the sale. The first thing you’ll need to do to “unlock the game” of selling and break the cycle of distrust is to stop focusing on making the sale. Huh? How can that be you ask? Key mindset shift: Focusing on the truth instead ironically creates more sales because you’ve created real trust with your prospective clients or customers. Stated again even more clearly: Your NEW GOAL is to find the truth (as to whether or not there is a potential for a sale between you and your prospect). Finding out if there is a fit between you and them is the pre-requisite to creating an open and trusting two-way dialogue.
Principles Of The NEW Selling Mindset There are three principles behind what I call the Unlock The Game® Mindset. 1. Diffuse The Pressure Always be diffusing sales pressure. That’s what you’ll need to be thinking about in every conversation you have in your daily selling activities, whether it’s on the phone, face to face, or even in email. Traditional sales methods teach us to always be moving the sales process forward, which puts pressure on people, you and them. For example, at the end of a call with a potential client, or at the end of a meeting, you’ve been probably been taught you should either close the sale right there and then or schedule the follow up meeting to keep the ball moving forward. Doing this puts pressure on the other person to respond, especially if you don’t know the truth of what they are really thinking. Where to begin with this is “letting go” of trying to move the sales process forward and instead, taking out the pressure and giving your prospect the control by saying: “Where do you think we should go from here?” They will immediately view you as someone who genuinely respects what they are thinking and that will be the beginning of the trust-building process. Amazing things will start to happen to you when you start creating trust instead of driving toward the sale. 2. Get To The Truth Getting to the truth instead of just focusing on the sale is key. When I say “truth”, I mean discovering the truth of exactly what the other person is thinking. The language you use is very important because it has to contain words and phrases that create a deep connection. For example, when someone calls you and tells you that they’ve heard or read about what your offer and they’d like you to send them some information, there is very specific language that you can use to immediately build trust and get to the truth of what the other person really wants. First, of course, you’ll want to begin with the pressure-diffusing phrase: “That’s not a problem.” Then you can say, “Would it make sense if we first figured out what specific problems you are wanting to solve, that way I can know exactly what to send you?”

That language re-engages the conversation into a two-way dialogue. So instead of delaying, waiting for the person to receive a “packet” from you, and then “following up” (which is an old school sales phrase you want to banish from your vocabulary immediately), you can immediately begin to reach your goal of getting to the truth by getting the other person to open to you because they can see you really care about helping them.
3. Become a Problem Solver and Trusted Advisor In The Eyes of Your Prospects One of the key strategies to helping our clients make the shift to becoming a trusted advisor is helping them convert their features and benefits into what we call “Problem Statements”. Problem Statements are key phrases that describe your prospects problems so clearly, that by stating them to your potential clients or customers is the trigger that connects them to you. You’ll immediately become a trusted advisor when your conversation is focused on solving their problem rather than pitching the future benefits of your solution. Most people work and work all their lives, just to make ends meet. Why work so hard to make someone else rich while you struggle to improve your own quality of life? For people who have entrepreneurial personality traits, working for themselves may be more satisfying. No one tells you what to do, when to do it, or how to do it -- you make those decisions yourself! And no one decides how much you make; your income relies solely on you. I chose to concentrate on the home business market to cater to these types of people - those who prefer their income to be a direct reward of their own efforts. This is a huge market that continues to grow - a perfect place for me to begin! How did your talents and interests help your affiliate business to become successful? Angela: One of the most common worries for eBusiness beginners is how to go about creating a website, uploading it, and all those other 'technical' details. This wasn't an issue for me. I'm an engineer and so I was able to avoid feeling intimidated by this stuff. Instead, I was able to settle right in and started learning the important stuff: marketing.

I find it more difficult to work when there are other people in the house, the TV is blaring, the dogs are barking, etc... so now I'm up at 5:30 every weekday. Starting my days early gives me the opportunity for some quiet work time. What business strategies did you learn that worked well for you and helped your affiliate business to become successful? Angela: Build relationships. Get to know your online colleagues - other webmasters or editors in your own niche. You can help each other with joint ventures, endorsements, suggestions, and more! And treat your visitors well! There are times when your help may go completely unappreciated, even when you've gone out of your way to provide it. But there are those other times when some of your visitors truly appreciate your help -and they refer their friends to you, post nice things about you, and generally give you some great free word-of-mouth advertising. I've found that excellent service is what brings a great many people back. What advice would you share to women just starting out in an affiliate business? Angela: Focus on one thing at a time. We're all eager to start developing the "multiple streams of income" we so often hear about on the 'net. But it's all too easy to start more than you can handle effectively. Instead of working yourself to exhaustion only to have 5 unprofitable sites, work hard to create one profitable site first. And don't toss together a bunch of unrelated stuff. If you have a gardening site, focus on gardening or gardening-related tools and supplies. Don't add dating services, business opportunities, or mortgage quotes to it. You'll never appeal to everyone; concentrate instead on appealing to your one niche audience. Finally, be patient and have confidence. Set a few challenging but achievable goals and work towards them. If you try something and it fails, so what? You've learned what doesn't work. Just try again! Angela worked as an engineer for many years, cloistered in a lab or squinting at a computer. She started her affiliate business in 1999 as anexperiment... an experiment which grew to a point where she was able to quit her day job to work full-time from home. She loves the challenge, the independence, and the complete lack of office politics!
