by Mary Roberts, Chair – Bronte BIA With summer 2012 having broken all temperature records, the thought of fall activities have not been foremost on the minds of most of us. However, the reality is that the kids are back at school, and fall has arrived. Come out and celebrate its arrival. Enjoy the magnificent fall colours in our picturesque Bronte Harbour Village by the Lake on Saturday, September 22. Lakeshore Rd. W. will be closed between Bronte Rd. and Nelson Street from 11am to 5pm for Bronte Village’s Annual Autumn Fest street festival. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience to residents during the closure. Lakeshore Road will become one big playground for the whole day. Shop, taste, smell, learn, and laugh with our friendly merchants and service providers. Look for end of summer bargains, fall or pre-Christmas treasures. Bronte is Oakville’s southwest shopping and dining center. Prepare to spend the day in our own beautiful community, supporting our Bronte business businesses who will be out in full force to greet you for a fun-filled
day of fall activities including, live music provided by BIA’s Roger Lapworth’s Retro Rock Lounge, activities for the children, including Thomas the Train, sponsored in part by RBC Bronte branch, petting zoo, pony rides and bouncy castles (nominal fee), street performers….something to delight the child in all of us! Also performing at the stage after lunch, are local Bronte businesses; Belly Up Belly Dance Studio Troupe, among others. It’s Been A Great Summer in Bronte - with lots of good things happening and more to come!! by Ralph Robinson –Councillor Ward 1 An OMB settlement was finally approved with Goldmanco (Bronte Village Mall). This approval gives the owner permission to revitalize the Mall, which approves the expansion of Sobeys and Pharma Plus with options for retail space on the ground floor of the westerly approved residential component and the 14 storey tower on Bronte Rd. Other potential improvements could be a publically owned market square along Lakeshore Rd; a public parkette along Sovereign Street; terracing and courtyards along Sovereign Street. It is, however, extremely important to understand that this recent approval only permits the mall owner to make these changes and does not necessarily mean that changes are going to happen. The “Shores” is beginning to have new residential owners move in and slowly but surely the exterior design approvals and the parkette are taking shape. The Glendella is still being revitalized and in accordance with the heritage permit . Susan Schappert of the Town’s Heritage Department sschappert@oakville.ca will be please to respond to questions . Although we are not certain as to the future use of Glendella, it seems evident that following the current zoning approval , Bronte will see some form of retail. Amica, the retirement home on Bronte Rd received Site Plan approval on August 7 , however there are still several conditions to be satisfied. It is expected that the building permit may be issued in the fall.

The recently approved Tanning Parlour Bylaw restricting use by those under age 18 was initiated by Annette Cyr , the founder and Chair of the Melanoma Society of Canada. Cyr who has been diagnosed 3 times with Melanoma is truly a hero on this initiative. She phoned Councillor Robinson a few months ago to discuss the banning of Tanning Parlours to teenagers which created the initiative to proceed The bylaw which was originally recommended in the staff report and the motion brought forward by Ralph Robinson was presented to Council and moved with unanimous approval. While Oakville is anxious that the Province becomes involved in this, Councillor Alan Johnston , advise that during the recent AMO ( Association of Municipalities of Ontario) convention the Minister of Health confirmed that The Province has no plan to consider Provincial legislation. Once again, Oakville has demonstrated Provincial leadership by being the first Municipality in Ontario on August 7 to approve this restrictive bylaw THE OAKVILLE ARTS COUNCIL is hosting their annual “Cogeco Stars Among Us” on Thursday September 20 at 6.30 pm at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre . The “Studio 1 Jazz Orchestra” is the featured entertainment and the Performing Arts Finalists will be showcased throughout the night along with dinner and a silent auction. www. oakvillearts.com offers the ability to vote for a favourite artist or purchase tickets. The phone number for information and tickets is 905 815 5977 Bronte business conditions have been an ongoing concern by the BIA The Town’s Economic Development staff led a process to engage identified stakeholders including an expert panel to discuss ways to improve business conditions. A report will be prepare by Oakville Town staff which will go to Council in early September outlining findings and opportunities identified through the engagement process help over the past year including a business action plan for Bronte

o you want to prepare your child as best as you can for when he or she starts the first grade? Kidex Academy offers toddler, preschool and kindergarten programs with core French in every classroom. All the classrooms offer enriched and stimulating environments for children to explore, learn and engage in social relationships. “We follow a developmental approach to learning that guides our programming in order to create individualized programming for every child,” owner Fred Rainville explains. “It is our belief that children should be respected and provided with opportunities to ask questions, inquire about relationships and learn in a safe and nurturing environment.” The newly renovated Oakville based learning academy follows the developmental approach, which encompasses the whole child and the vision that children
develop skills and abilities in several domain areas at the same time and at varying rates. An individual profile is created for each child and parents are involved in the development of the profile and goal setting, which helps the teachers to create programming that, is developmentally appropriate for their child. “Our teachers sit down with parents every three months to track their child’s progress in the program,” Rainville explains. The key curriculum components include literacy, numeracy and the development of learning skills required for future academic success. All the classrooms are designed to stimulate each child’s natural curiosity to learn and explore. Sensory experiences engage the children in learning and allow them to fully explore and understand concepts of language, mathematics, science and social studies. French instruction, art exploration and music are also parts of
the core curriculum. To ensure the students are receiving the best possible teaching available, all of toddler and preschool RECE teachers are extensively trained in the area of child development and are continuously expanding their knowledge through professional development and continuing education. The enriched kindergarten program is staffed with teachers with Bachelor of Education Degrees, Ontario Teacher’s College Membership, and RECE qualifications. Kidex Academy offers academic tutoring for students of all abilities from junior kindergarten to grade 8. There are also French tutoring, specialty programs and many weekend activities for children. “We provide an exceptional foundation for your child’s future.” Please contact us for more information about Kidex Academy and how your child can fit into one of the individualized programs.

Lest We Forget: November 11 is Remembrance Day The Poppy is our symbol of Remembrance, representing our pledge to never forget all the Canadians who have fallen in war and military operations since 1921. Internationally the Poppy stands as a “symbol of collective reminiscence, as other countries have also adopted its image to honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The annual Poppy Campaign, which is the foundation of the Legion’s Remembrance Program, is a major source of funding for the Legions across Canada. The generosity of Canadians enables the Legions to ensure that our veterans and their dependants are cared for and treated with the respect that they deserve. The Poppy Campaign runs each November and Bronte’s Branch 486 actively participates. The Poppies are distributed to

Canadians of all ages and serves to perpetuate Remembrance by ensuring that the memory and sacrifices of our war veterans are never forgotten. These funds are used for Assisting exservice personnel and their dependents that require assistance. This includes the Canadian Forces, Reserves, Merchant Marine and ex-service personnel from both Commonwealth countries and allied countries who are now residing in Canada. The Royal Canadian Legion in Bronte, is a prime example and advocate of everything the Legion is about, actively and vigorously working to provide our homecoming Veterans with the help and assistance that they rightfully deserve, having staked their lives in defence of their country. We are proud to count amongst our membership, not only ex-service personnel from all wars and actions since the Legions inception, but also both serving and recently retired members of our Country’s armed forces. Bronte Branch was originally formed in April 1948, by a group of 15 men, as part of the Trafalgar Township. On 31st anniversary of D-Day, 6th June 1975, the Branch was renamed General Chris Vokes Branch, in honour of Brigadier Chris Vokes, who served in the Italian Campaign of WWII. Bronte Legion actively commemorates, every year, major campaigns of the World Wars where Canadians saw active service. Parades and services are held annually, in commemoration of Vimy Ridge, D-Day and, of course, Remembrance Day. Our parades are very well supported and attended by the local community, and organisations within it. Included in these are the Cadet organisations that provide our parades with, not only Canada’s future defenders, but also the Bands that are a central part of these parades. Bronte Legion, Branch 486, has often been referred to as
‘The Friendliest Branch’, an affectation that the members keenly seek to endure. Most every event on the calendar is marked through an event of some kind, be it a Valentines Dinner, Spring Fling, Halloween Ball or Christmas Dinner. Add to this the events that occur every week - $3 Sundays, Darts, Snooker, Pool, Euchre, Friday Fish and Chips and Karaoke. Bronte Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion, is situated on the corner of Jones and Marine Drive a mere block from Bronte Harbour. Come and visit us here, visitors and new members are always welcome, come and see what we can offer you and, in doing so, find out what you can offer us.
The Bronte Legion Remembrance Day Parade will be held at the Bronte Cenotaph, Lakeshore Road on Sunday November 11th at 10:30 a.m. For additional information, please visit www.legion.ca

Oxygen Face Treatments Heal Damaged Skin by Marianne Padjan This is one of the newest and most exciting areas of skin care treatment. It involves the use of molecular oxygen delivered as a gas mist. In addition to soothing oxygenation masques, we finish the treatment with a patented oxygen plasma serum. This delivers an intensive concentration of pure oxygen to tissues to help heal and soothe damaged skin, boost collagen and elastin synthesis and formation. This is ideal for mature skin, dry skin, smokers and complexions in need of revitalization, but especially beneficial for laser or resurfaced skin early in the healing phase. It is believed that oxygen restores skin moisture and stimulated the growth of new cells. Oxygen is an essential element in sustaining human and animal life on earth and contributes to every aspect of our

metabolism. Oxygen is carried in the blood stream to every vital organ in the body, the largest vital organ of your body being your skin. Human skin has two layers. The outer layer, known as the epidermis, is the exit zone for the dead skin cells we are continually shedding. The inner layer of the skin is the dermis, the level at which cells are regenerated. Oxygen is vital to new cell growth. It also counteracts damage done by free radicals and speeds the elimination of carbon dioxide and other toxins from skin cells. A number of environmental factors can be damaging to the skin over time. These include exposure to sunlight, air pollution, temperature extremes, stress and poor diet. All diminish the quantity of oxygen in the skin cells. The aging process itself is linked to oxygen, or rather the lack of it. Research has proven that early aging of the facial skin is at least partly due to diminished oxygen levels in the subcutaneous tissues which normally receive oxygen. This treament ,while done on the face , allows the oxygen to carry throughout the body. The entire body bennefits from the oxygen face treatment especially when combined with other relaxing and cleansing treatments , such as reflexology. Marianne Padjan is a Holistic Practitioner offering reiki, yoga training, reflexology, spiritual psychology and counselling, hot stone massage and oxygen facials. She practices in Bronte at the Meridian Therapy Centre, 2441 Bronte Rd, unit 22 (Bronte Village Mall) 905-825-5988 or cell: 416-460-8032.

And of course all of your meals are included while onboard the ship. AND to enjoy Oahu/Honolulu you spend a total of six nights at the Hilton Hawaiian Village with daily breakfast, a guided Island tour, admission to the Honolulu Zoo and admission to the famous Polynesian Cultural Center. 2012 clients raved about this terrific package! Foot Pain Anyone? By Dr. Joyce Allman D.C. Do you suffer from chronic foot or ankle pain? Many times the problems start in the young with poor foot mechanics, sloppy footwear or faulty structure which is inherited. Foot problems tend to run in families and don’t feel alone. 98% of us lean towards being flat footed!.No pun intended here! Chiropractors are trained to assess the movement of the bones of the ankle, foot knee and hip and we can often see if the movement in the joints is faulty and requires some correction. This correction can take the form of applied therapy to the joints (adjustments) and /or orthotics. Orthotics can assists the foot with every step preventing ligament strain, knee and lower back pain and the chronic arthritis which develops in later years. An assessment from your chiropractor is a thorough look at how you carry yourself. We look at balance in a very detailed way ensuring that you are moving with the most efficiency you body will allow. We look for dis-ease meaning areas of strain (you may or may not complain about these areas) rather than disease.(you definitely complain of these areas). A foot assessment with Dr. Allman is a full foot, ankle, knee, hip and low back assessment so you are ensured your therapy and if needed, your orthotic is precise. Come December 1, 2012, the Bronte Chiropractic Clinic with Dr. Joyce Allman will join Hassard Chiropractic Clinic making the most comprehensive chiropractic clinic in Oakville. Dr. Allman welcomes new patients to join her at this new location. In the meantime we are still located at the Bronte Village Mall. Please call 905-827-1633 for your consultation today.
Are you in
Pain? Did you know the use of low level laser therapy improves 90% of painful musculoskeletal problems. A course of laser by a qualified laser therapist can be your best solution. Call today for your consultation and evaluation.
Dangers of Tap Water If you receive municipal water, the main chemical used to disinfect the tap water in your house is chlorine. According to Dr. Mercola (www.mercola.com), the levels of chlorine disinfection byproducts (DBPs) that are produced by this process are both dangerous and alarming. There is actually no safe level for many things found in drinking water, including heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, hormones and DBPs. One of the easiest ways to take control of your health is to control the water coming into your house. Make sure the water you are drinking, bathing in and breathing in your indoor air is clean! You can do this with a whole house water filter, a shower filter and a tap water filter, or a combination of these. Let Your Food Be Your Medicine Nada Yehia, registered holistic nutritionist A simple question for which there often is not a simple answer, what do I take for ……. condition? example: allergy, cold, indigestion, joint pain, headache, hormonal… The only way to overcome any condition is to correct its cause. Each of us has unique chemistry. The same health issue can have different causes, depending on the individual’s body nature. The fact is, our body is a miraculous machine that can heal itself as long as we provide what is needed to strengthen the weaknesses that may occur in our systems. One of the most effective tools for pinpointing weaknesses is the lifestyle assessment technique that deals with symptoms and signs. It is more reliable and specific for its purpose than

going through certain tests, since our method is working on nutritional balance by giving recognition to your PH balance – Acid and Alkaline-. Food based programs are uniquely formulated to work on causes and effects. Restoring the body’s supply of vital nutrients enables the body to restore its balance where the mind, body and spirit together function in harmony. Our nutritional approach is focused on combination of nutritional sources. Holistic approach takes care of different systems in the body, in most cases treating one or more systems in the body hopefully will bring relief to other systems. Alpha Nutrition Centre has a fresh and holistic approach to improving the way you feel and your body’s overall health, through nutritional Symptomatology. This means that each client is treated uniquely – we feel that what’s most important is for you to be aware of your body and what it’s telling you. How do we do this? We’ll look at the symptoms of imbalance that you feel in all systems of your body, Digestive, Intestinal, Circulatory/Cardiovascular, Nervous Immune/Lymphatic, Respiratory, Urinary, Glandular/Endocrine, Structural, and Reproductive and will help you begin to understand what each of these symptoms means, and what your body is telling you. What if you hold the key to your ultimate nutritional balance? It's what we believe; so healthy nutrition and diet foods recipes are what we will help you apply into your lifestyle for long lasting results. Did you know that when you feel a symptom of imbalance in your body and you take a drug-based medication it might be masking your awareness of that symptom? So the imbalance is still there, but you don’t feel it? What happens if this ignoring of your body results in your body becoming increasingly more imbalanced? The symptoms will get louder the more you mask them. This kind of imbalance masking cycle is something that we don’t believe in. We know that if something doesn’t feel “right” in your body, that’s its way of telling you that you need to restore the balance in that area – and that’s what we’re here for. What if you could understand what each symptom means, and how to restore the balance to that area of your body through holistic choices and no drugs? We can help you with that. We’ll utilize foods for medicine and holistic supplements when needed to re-balance your body. Did you know that weight loss, low energy, and hormonal imbalance are related to the foods you are eating? It's hard to imagine, but the truth is, most popular manufactured and processed food items have many chemical ingredients, preservatives, and additives that require your body to do a lot of work to process them – ending up causing more harm than good to your body because they hold no nutritional content and are exhausting for your body to break down. We know and believe in food as an energy source and as medicine. Another diet choice we like is the Raw Foods diet, which offers nutritional properties to your life that are powerfully balancing. Want to know why? Of many reasons why raw food diets and recipes are so beneficial for your body, one is because in their raw form, organic fruits, grains, and vegetables are most nutrient rich, serving as fuel for your body. You’ll find that your energy levels rise as your body begins to auto-balance just from the choice to eat raw food meals. What if you could understand what your body is telling you that it needs? With our use of nutritional Symptomatology you can.

We’ll help you improve your body/mind connection so that there is clear communication between the two. It is a truth that you can experience with Alpha Nutrition Center! Nada Yehia, a registered holistic nutritionist and the founder of Alpha Nutrition Center, will be working at the Thumbs Up 4 Shiatsu Clinic two days a week and will offer free consultation for the month of September. You can book your appointment by calling Thumbs Up at 905 465 0445. Or visit the clinic at 2464 Lakeshore Rd west unit 3 (Bronte Rd. & Lakeshore) Testimonials Letters: “I can’t remember myself living without dieting and stressing over-weight issues. Being on several crushing diets, made me think that I was able to wear smaller size clothes, and experience the freedom to eat anything I wanted, but this situation did not last for too long, because every time I stopped dieting I gained the weight back. Now that I am on the “Alpha Nutrition Program”, even though the focal point of this program is not only for shedding weight, however feeling balanced and healthy while losing weight. When I have a problem I don’t refer to food to comfort me anymore, simply because my mind is in perfect balance and I only eat because I am hungry.” Joceline Badr

“I was suffering indigestion and migraine headache for many years, never took pain killer to ease it up. This painful situation got me interested in looking for alternative method to heal my aches. I have done a lot of reading and research, but never believed that there is way out to this problem, until I happened to meet a friend that I haven’t seen for a long time and told me about her experience with chronic migraine headache. Then my friend referred me to the “Alpha Nutrition Program”. I had amazing results, this dedicating program provided all the help I needed, the counseling part was one of the most effective I’ve ever thought, due to the fact that it made me commit to a new view of healthier life style while working on my digestive problem and getting rid of the migraine headache. Thank you very much for everything you’ve done for me.” Samar Shoujah

British Car Day is coming to Bronte Creek Provincial Park on Sunday, Sept. 16. Organizers are expecting 10-12,000 people this year. British Car Day is hosted annually by the Toronto Triumph Club, on the third Sunday of September. Since its inaugural event in 1984, it has grown in leaps and bounds, and now draws over 1000 British cars and 8,000 spectators, with room to grow even bigger. The event is the largest, one-day, all-British car event in North America, with visitors from throughout the northeast United States, the Maritime provinces, Quebec, and Manitoba. We have even had visitors from Alberta, Texas, the UK, and New Zealand. The venue for British Car Day is Bronte Creek Provincial Park, about 20 miles west of downtown Toronto, conveniently located at the Burloak Drive exit off the Queen Elizabeth Way. The south entrance is for non-British cars & spectators, while the north entrance is reserved for British car exhibitors & vendors.

our well being and calm us in the process. One reason why we all go out of our way to plant flowers in the summer, is because colours soothes us continuously. And this is also the main scope behind our taking our time to choose the right decor in our homes, especially since we spend so much time inside our cozy houses. But fabrics do fade after a while and the comfort of our furniture does need to be brought back after a length of use through the years. Fortunately for us, there still are a big number of pieces in homes today that were made with good quality frames and hardwoods, that get re done rather than thrown out. And this is where we come in. For years, we have been reupholstering and refinishing furniture bringing it back to its original comfort and luster. Furniture that was made in an era when it was meant to last the constant use. Furniture that was built so solid, that families have raised families on it and it is still going good today. all it needs is a little rejuvenating. We are conveniently located in West Oakville at Bronte Village Mall. Taste of Colombia Offers Fair Trade, Organic Coffee Taste of Colombia started not as a quaint, South American style café perched on Bronte pier in west Oakville, but as a dream of it’s founder and head barista, Yury Wu, Colombian native from Medellin, when she created Fair Trade Colombia, it’s parent company. “It came out of a need to get vulnerable communities to export their products out of Colombia,” says Yury. So, in 2008, Yury created her business online (www.fairtradecolombia.com) with the hopes of giving the communities that need help most in Colombia, the means to bring their goods into the Canadian market. “Taste of Colombia is a place where I can put all my passions together: Colombia, coffee, music, social justice, equality, all things organic and fair trade,” Yury explains. Yury launched Fair Trade Colombia while working at home as a stay at home mom. Her husband was teaching full time, and she was raising her three children. It wasn’t until 2012 that
Taste of Colombia, the ‘public face’ of Fair Trade Colombia, come into being. Since February 2012, Taste of Colombia has been bringing its Fair Trade, Shade Grown, Organic, Bird Friendly Colombian and other specialty South and Central American coffees to Bronte. From Taste of Colombia’s blog (www.tasteofcolombia.ca): “I live in Bronte and I am thrilled you have opened your Colombian café. I was in Colombia last fall and I loved it!” Yury wants her patrons to “Smell the coffee, hear the music, see the vibrant colours, see Colombian antiques and art pieces on display, and experience the friendly attitude of the

Colombian people.” She says, “The snacks are baked with quinoa, using exotic Colombian fruits like guava, mango and passion fruit. My empanadas are a typical Colombian snack served with aji, a special sauce, and filled with beef and potato, made by Antojitos, the most famous Colombian bakery in Mississauga!” But more importantly, Yury wants to create a café that can also make a difference. “Fair Trade means we are guaranteed that the producers we use are paid fairly for their work. We celebrate World Fair Trade Day every year and are currently working with various councilors and other eco friendly groups in the town of Oakville to push the initiative to certify Oakville as a Fair Trade Town.’ Visit Yury and Taste of Colombia at 67 Bronte Rd, Unit #2 in Oakville.
