Carol and Joey Carol, your colors are lovely. How did you chose them? Joey had given me a pair of turquoise earrings and I loved the color. I began to think in terms of a turquoise wedding. There is a wild story about my bridesmaids dresses. I had ordered the dresses and when they arrived, they were definitely the wrong color. Instead of being a teal/turquoise, they were a baby blue. I just couldn’t do it!! Two days before the wedding, at 11 p.m., I decided to dye the dresses. Crazy? Yes! But, the color turned out perfect and there was no shrinkage, no running, no fading. Perfect!! 7

Your flowers were lovely. What were you and your girls carrying? I wanted the bouquets to be bright and vibrant, and not a typical rounded bouquet. I wanted texture and color. There were roses, hydrangeas, and lime green spider mums, which I loved! Purples and greens -vibrant and stunning! Did you have a theme and how did you carry this out? I suppose you could say that my theme was traditional elegance with a western twist since the girls all wore boots. On the other hand, we all wore pearl accessories. I exchanged my pearls for a turquoise necklace after the ceremony for a more casual look to go with my boots. Was there anything uniquely yours in the wedding? Two things, actually. For our Unity ceremony, we did a Unity painting using our wedding colors of champagne and turquoise. We poured the paint onto a blank canvas to signify our union. It is on display in our home. Additionally, we wrote each other a letter about what we love about the other person - but we didn’t read it. Like a time capsule, it was put into a wooden box, along with a bottle of wine and hammered shut. We will open it on our 10th year anniversary and reminisce about our wedding and love for each other. Was there anything you “splurged” on? We had a fun idea for our guests to take home with them. Instead of a photo booth, we did an action “flipbook”. Guests are recorded in a short video. The book is assembled immediately and when you flip through the book, it looks animated. It was a huge hit!

Debbie’s TIP... WHY HIRE A DJ?
Okay, so I know you have an iPod loaded with all your favorite songs. I know what you are thinking...you don’t need a professional DJ. Well, let me tell you why you do. A DJ sets the tone for the entire reception. Not only do they introduce you when you are making your grand entrance as husband and wife - they will keep the “party” going. With their expert training you can be assured that they will keep everyone dancing. It’s their job and they have the experience. Your DJ will act as your emcee, keeping your guests informed about the first dance, cake cutting, garter and bouquet toss, along with so many other things. He will announce when it’s time for you to make your exit and get your guests ready. I’m sure you have attended a reception where everyone was dancing until the very last minute...that’s what a professional DJ can do for you. Choose wisely, so your reception will be one your guests will never forget!

Kara’s color palette reflected her favorite colors of lavender and peach, colors she felt were summery and timeless. Looking back years from now, Kara felt these colors would stand the test of time and not look like the “trend” of the moment. She describes her wedding theme as “a Cinderella fairytale” and she and Dezz even left the reception in a horse drawn carriage. Did she feel like a princess bride? Yes!
O C T O B E R

Sand Plum Event Center was the perfect location for their reception. Kara says, “ They were absolutely wonderful. It should have been on TV! The ambiance was exceptional - very elegant and classic. I couldn’t have been happier!” Every detail from the lush flower arrangements to the horse drawn carriage made this wedding appear to be from a fairytale - exactly what Kara had wished for. “Yes, we did have one unusual food item. Dezz’s Uncle Terry roasted a pig for our reception. Although I was initially opposed to this (I thought it would ruin our guests appetite seeing a whole pig- I was totally wrong), I gave in to Dezz’s insistence. You would not believe how delicious it
was and how impressed our guests were! Moral: Try to be flexible. It turned out to be one of our favorite memories!” Kara believes some of the best advice she was given is “to keep prayer first and to pray together.” And, never go to bed mad! Leaving for a honeymoon in San Antonio, Kara and Dezz have many special memories of family and friends who were there to support them as they embark on this journey called marriage.

WI Interview - A Bride’s Jou Abbey Volkman
We d d i n g C o o r d i nato r Abbey Volkman, wedding coordinator at one of Oklahoma City’s top venues, has worked with 100’s of brides to plan their wedding day and reception. She is well versed in all aspects of wedding planning from the tiniest details to the overall big picture. She has emerged as one of the most capable and creative wedding coordinators in Oklahoma City.
A BRIDE’S JOURNEY TO THE ALTAR...PART 3 IN A SERIES OF 4 The week before the wedding…a personal letter to Wedding Ideas: First of all, I’d like to say, lots of people are going to offer the bride their help during the planning process – USE THEM! Find ways to involve the people that want to take away some of your stress or your to-do’s. The closer you get to The Big Day, the easier it is to get overwhelmed by the little details. I think it’s really important to utilize the help of friends and family around you, because so often, so many of them are just waiting and wanting to help you with your list. I also think (or at least for me), that the month before the wedding, is just a perfect opportunity to fall in love all over again. I mean, you get to marry this man! And it’s becoming a reality! Eddie and I have been having so much fun together and we just can’t stop looking at each other and saying, “We’re getting married!” If getting the ring is the grand opening of the engagement, then the grand finale blows it out of the water! The butterflies in my stomach and the excitement I felt when he slipped that ring on my finger totally pale in comparison to the feelings I’ve had over the last month as I prepare to walk down the aisle toward him. The entire thing really starts to take shape the closer you get and it’s easier and easier to visualize yourself there and that it’s actually happening. I think visualizing is really an important aspect of the entire planning process. Whenever I can’t make a decision or I’m feeling overwhelmed, I try to imagine how it will actually be that day and it helps. The month before the wedding means showers! As I write this, I am preparing to go to my first wedding shower. I am so excited! It really means a lot when your close friends will get together to celebrate YOU! Make sure to find some great shower hostess gifts so they will know you appreciate their hard work and love! It’s important to make sure you are registered because most people tend to go and buy the wedding gift either before a shower or in the two weeks before the wedding. As you approach the big day, be sure to think about your out-of-town guests. I’ve had to make sure several guests have proper transportation, airport pick up, etc. You don’t want to get to the day before your wedding and start figuring out when or where someone is going to get picked up and who’s going to drop them off. You have an excellent opportunity about two or three weeks before the wedding to focus on those details. For Information on Advertising call 405.216.0747

rney to the Altar...Part III A few weeks before the wedding, you should begin working on your thank you notes, as well as notes to your vendors. I think it’s really important to make a handwritten effort to say thank you to the people who have worked so hard to make your day special. In a day and age when everything is so rushed (and the planning of your wedding is certainly no exception), it’s a beautiful tradition to hand write a sweet note of gratitude. As you get closer to the day, be sure to finalize all of your plans with your vendors. Check and double check that the people you have ordered boutonnieres and corsages for are actually attending and update your florist accordingly. Or, if you need additional florals for unexpected honor attendants. Be sure to get your final headcount to your caterer/venue on time and make any necessary adjustments to number of tablecloths or number of favors. Clean your house! You’re probably going to have lots of people coming over, either stopping by or staying during the wedding timeframe. You’re also going to be bringing new gifts into the home, so it’s important to have things in order so that all of these things can fit in nicely. Find a creative way to say thank you to both your parents and his parents. Don’t forget about ways to personalize the rehearsal dinner… be it framed photos, a slideshow, or handwritten letter to each attendant. Don’t wait till the last minute to wrap your attendant gifts - this little task can suddenly seem like a big task if you don’t have the time for it. Do it early and put them to the side. Like I said before, the closer I get, the more excited I am to marry Eddie. It’s just so real and it’s exactly what I want. I think at the end of the day, if you’re marrying your best friend--then you will have your dream wedding. I have so many brides on a serious budget look at me at the end of the night and say, “Everything was absolutely perfect.” I can’t wait to walk down the aisle to Eddie. I can’t wait to lock eyes with him and know that this is real. I can’t wait for it to be 9:30 in the evening, an hour and a half into dancing, with my hands in the air, and a great song playing. I’m going to look at him, give him a smile, and begin the rest of my life... I’m going to be his WIFE! No matter where you are, what you are eating, or what you spent to get there… when you’re surrounded by family and friends, looking into the eyes of the man you love… that moment, that moment right there… that is perfection! I’ll talk to you guys next month, I have thank you notes to write!

Bird’s nests were made into boutonnières and corsages for a unique and charming touch for this back to Nature wedding. Many homemade details created by Jennifer’s mom brought warm personal touches throughout the wedding.

The cake was unusual as it was stunning. The flowers were artfully arranged in burlap trimmed mason jars and made into lovely, airy centerpieces, bringing nature into the reception. Jennifer’s favorite color is purple and Matt’s is green, so Jennifer chose two lovely shades of each for her color palette. What a nice way to choose colors! Jennifer’s vision for the wedding was a “back to Nature” theme. Somewhat rustic and woodsy and she hoped that the “theme” would announce itself with the décor and colors chosen. Guests were given bird seed hearts to hang in their trees at home. Bouts and corsages were tiny birds nests. The bride and bridesmaids bouquets were a natural wildflower mix that Jennifer says, “looked like I went to a field and scooped them up.” Even the cakes echoed nature. The bridal cake was a tree of life, topped with porcelain lovebirds while the grooms cake was made to look like a slice of a rustic log. To honor her Choctaw heritage, Jennifer chose to wear traditional Choctaw bridal moccasins. These incredible white calfskin moccasins with the leaf motif were hand beaded in turquoise and purple.

Having the wedding and reception at the Sand Plum Event Center in Guthrie turned out to be one of their best decisions. The Sand Plum did everything for them from the set up to the clean up, eliminating a great deal of stress. The couples Sunday afternoon wedding was nothing short of fabulous and the “back to Nature’’ theme was certainly carried out beautifully.

WI Debbie’s TIP... HIRING YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER Price is not everything when it comes to photographers. Make sure to look over all their social media sites and comb through all the photos on their website. Meet with a potential photographer in person- you are going to spend one of the most important days of your life with them. You need to feel like you “click”. Ask for references. Other brides are happy to share their experiences with you. Your wedding photos will be looked at for the rest of your life and likely for generations to follow.
