A le!er from the Editor:
WHAT’S Your PATTERN? For our fourth issue, the vision always remains focused on celebrating style and heritage for today’s fusion bride. Style savvy readers who aren’t afraid to blaze their own path in love, in life and in design. My interview with renown wedding photographer, Jasmine Recently, I’ve become fascinated by Star (pg. 26), proved exactly the notion of how patterns inspire that. Her journey from student to ideas, how those ideas conjure starlett is a testament on the power action and how action creates of being you. This same principle movements. These movements of carving out your own destiny, can be as subtle as DIY ideas like instead of following the patterns embossed centerpieces by set by others, also applies to Cupcake Wars’ Glenn Sturgis wedding planning. (pg. 24) or as epic as the Mayan wedding of a For multi-cultural couples, the lifetime, hosted by Lisa pressure to adhere to safe Light of Destination expectations can be stifling. Bride The vast array of traditions and (pg. 38). customs, which themselves are a form of pattern and/or repetition, can easily serve as a weighted anchor... or a well of inspiration. My hope for you is the latter.
we decided to take a Chanelesque approach to color by asking the question: Can Multi-cultural be muted? Can you strip the repetitive expectations of vibrant colors, for a more subtle sexiness? I say yes, and along with a stellar team, we were able to bring to life a truly multi-cultural dreamscape inspired by Moroccan patterns, Syrian etchings, Pakistani couture, French tailoring and a whole lot more. As you comb through our real fusion wedding features, design recipes and travel destinations (pg. 30) I encourage you to feel empowered by that little doodle, unorthodox textile, random tradition or unconventional pattern that keeps nudging at you. It may just lead you to a breakthrough.

here’s an “It Girl” in floral design these days, and she’s bearing it all in full bloom. If you haven’t heard of Janie Medley, then you’re probably not into flowers, beautiful centerpieces and the art of dreaming in color. In between bringing brides’ dreams to life and designing style shoots (which more than likely,
you have seen all over the blogosphere), we had a chance to catch up with Ms. Medley and find out where she draws her inspiration from. “I’m really not a ‘trendy’ person...not when it comes to floral designing and also not when it comes to my personal style of dress.” Janie said, “I love beautiful flowers and I always want

HOLY CAKE!
TEXT by FRI FORJINDAM PHOTOGRAPHY by CATE SCAGLIONE & WILLIAM HOLLINGSWORTH
T
HE AVERAGE TIME IT TAKES FOR MOST bakers to hone in on their signature style is a lifetime. Not the case for pastry chef, Heather Barranco, who in a little over a year has carved a deliciously seductive niche for her business, Heather Barranco Dreamcakes (HeatherBarranco.com), as the go-to bakery for high-end, culture-infused design. Simply put: Her cakes are works of art. With fans like Secretary of state - Hillary Clinton in her arsenal, it’s no wonder that everyone’s clamoring for a taste of Heather’s colorful confections. To think, Heather’s natural childhood affinity (rite of passage, really) towards food styling all started with family dinners. “I equate homemade food with showing one’s love.” Heather says. “This came from growing up in a close large Italian family that took pride in creating lavish meals and desserts for our guests. It was natural for me to combine food and design.” However, Heather’s love for culinary arts and special events runs a little deeper than childhood at the dinner table. Say, three generations earlier with grand parents who in the 1940s, started the first special-event catering business in Staten Island, Italian bakeries and now what is the longest bridal salon in Staten Island. As if that weren’t a clear enough indicator of what she was meant to do, it took Heather’s dabbling in something seemingly different, to seal the deal. Before being elbow deep in flour, Heather’s background as a graduate of the prestigious Parson School of Design in New York city led her to a successful career as a product designer for large corporations including Crayola, L’Oreal and Ralph Lauren Home. During that time her direct interaction with the end-user was zero. It was that desire

to cut out the middle man and work directly with customers, the people actually using the “product”, and in this case the couples, planners and guests who dig into each savory bite, that inspired Heather to become a cake designer. “I’ve always been good at listening to my clients and tapping into the essence of what they would visually love.” Heather says. “I wanted to do this for the general public.” That growing public comes with personality traits, nuances, unique tastes and a plethora of identity gems that inform and inspire the cake design. Bringing those diverse styles, be it interfaith, multi-cultural or something as simple as varying symbolic colors, can be a delicate (and delicious) balance. “I feel that most people are not afraid to show their cultural identity in their desserts and design.” Heather says. “We are in a country that celebrates our differences. The cultural styling is my specialty because I truly value art history and cultural diversity. As an artist, I find beauty in unique art and flavors. I always start with the question ‘how do you envision your event?’ This is the dream vision. It’s my job to tap into that dream and create something that surpasses my client’s expectations.” These days, while not wowing guests with pagoda cakes or plume-feathered pastries, Heather credits a lot of her inspiration from the people she encounters and the places she’s been fortunate to visit. “Two years ago I visited India. It was an amazing experience because I met my husband’s extended family and visited their village.” Heather says. “His village is the exact opposite of the US on so many levels. It allowed me to embrace the simple, raw beauty of a place that can only be described as an awakening of the soul.” Up next on the Dreamcakes’ roster, their nonwedding cakes and desserts that will be available in all the Garden of Eden grocery stores in New York and New Jersey. As far as her wedding cakes are concerned, the challenge really would be how big can you dream? Or rather, have you the gaul to cut into one of her pieces of cake art? WN

BOTTLE IT UP!
Wow your guests with these DIY champagne favors. Great for table numbers, favorite quotes, event dates, guest’s names, abstract designs and much more.
HOW YOU’LL DO IT: STEP ONE: Prep The Bo!les - If your bo!les have labels on them go ahead and soak them in water to remove all the labels. STEP TWO: First Coat - Spray a light coat of paint onto the bo!les, then use a pencil to sketch/stencil your designs onto the bo!le. STEP THREE: Puffy Paint Your Design Use the puffy paint to create or trace over the designs on some of the bo!les. Use the painter’s tape to help you create guide lines on the bo!le. and the toothpicks are perfect for smoothing out the puffy paint once on the bo!le. Once your design is set, let puffy paint dry. STEP FOUR: Second Coat -Spray paint the bo!les and watch your design turn into the raised embossed look. Here’s How: Pick up a couple of 1/2” dowel rods and turn your bo!les upside down on to the rods for support while painting. Hold the bo!om of the rod so you can paint the entire bo!le at one time and your hand will be free of paint. Stick the dowel right into the lawn while the bo!les dry to the touch. Don’t forget to spray around/ into the top lip of the bo!le for a finished look. If needed you can go back for a second coat. STEP FIVE: Once your designs are dried, you’re ready to wow your family and friends.

n the six short years since internationally renown photographer - Jasmine Star turned the page on an uninspiring law school career at UCLA to follow her true passion, you would assume she was destined to be behind the lens. In truth, in the very competitive world of wedding photography, few have distinguished themselves with such prowess and enthusiasm as this native Californian, who once admits “didn’t trust herself enough to take bigger risks.”
Voted top ten photographer by American Photo Magazine, Jasmine has garnered a strong following of brides, professionals and peers to her website Jasmine-Star.com, craving to live the star treatment, complete with high fashion editorials, her “dream big” persona, and a contagious desire to connect with integrity. “If you can believe it, the inspiration comes from my clients.” Jasmine said. “I’ve discovered they’re always willing to push the boundaries and challenge me to think differently when it comes to their photos. What this has empowered me to do in the wedding industry is own my role as high fashion wedding photographer and embrace the movement as a whole.” Harvesting one’s potential and owning that power didn’t always come easy.

STAR EFFECT Growing up Latina, and the daughter of a pastor in one of the nation’s most multifaceted cities (Los Angeles) not only informed Jasmine’s philosophy on photography, it has inspired how she chooses to experience life. And to think that it all started with a threat very close to home. “My mother had a relapse with brain cancer and I took a medical leave to be with my family.” Jasmine shared about her initial departure from law school. “During that time, my boyfriend proposed and we planned a wedding in Hawaii. As I searched for wedding photographers, I completely fell head over heels with photography. When I found my wedding photographer [David Jay], I knew it was a perfect match. His imagery moved me, challenged me and inspired me. Shortly a"er returning from my honeymoon, I made the decision to leave law school and pursue my dreams of being a photographer.” Jasmine’s early introduction to the world of film and digital as an assistant photographer didn’t come without it ‘s share of humiliation and discouragement. Imagine shooting rolls of film that all turn out overexposed and poorly developed. Most would cower from this early experience. Not Jasmine. Challenges, in her eyes, serve as opportunities to be!er understand her client.
Exploring cultures and capturing those unique nuances that make us who we are, is exactly what Jasmine thrives off of as a photographer. Where she’s excelled in the last few years, is her ability to infuse that exploration with a signature style that’s equal parts ‘Annie Leibovitz high fashion’ and renaissance art with a soulful ‘Jose Villa whisper’. Not one to shy away from sharing her secrets, Jasmine’s open-book approach to success stems from her strong faith in God. She continues to inspire up-and-coming professionals looking to get their start in the business. Her most recent book, Exposed Magazine, sold out immediately (of course) before you could say “inspiring”, which is exactly what her story, her journey...her star treatment, has been! WN

“This could be because I firmly believe weddings encompass a myriad of complexities in and out of intercultural considerations,” Jasmine replied when asked about working with intercultural couples. “People are people, and color is color...and love is love. It is important for the photographer to truly understand the cultural elements and considerations that play into each wedding. Whether it’s having experience shooting a Chinese tea ceremony, or documenting a Jewish ketubah signing, or running around to capture a Korean Paebaek ceremony, being able to have clients trust me is priceless. Yes, it’s important to capture editorial imagery of the bride and groom, but it’s equally important to document moments of their wedding to reflect their heritage and family traditions.”

TOP FIVE Global Grubs! TEXT & PHOTOGRAPHY by JADE BROADUS
FOODIES ARE TAKING OVER THE WORLD AND RIGHTFULLLY SO. Most people eat at least three times a day, considering the food destinations of a city are just as important (maybe even more so, than packing in every ‘lesser known’ sight listed by the guidebooks) because ultimately, food is culture. Unlike the fourth chapel tour of the day, local cuisine not only adds variety to an instagram feed but allows travelers to experience something that’s immediate, timeless, personal and shared. By heading just an hour outside of any major city, travelers can find chefs cooking with a modern, daring boldness while keeping their connection to the area. Here are my top five “off the beaten track” foodie destinations that offer a lot more than just what is served on your plate.
1
GIRONA, SPAIN: Gorge Yourself - Only one hour away from Barcelona, Girona is a smaller city oozing with medieval charm, beautiful cobblestone alleyways and really good food. Make a reservation at Divinum for a three hour, nine course tasting menu- with accompanying wine- that mixes modern technique with old
world traditions. You have to try the blue cheese pasta with sprinkles of bacon and the four cheese dessert spread. Make sure to tour the Jewish Quarter and the church for a truly unique historical journey.
2 3
OURIKA, MOROCCO: Total Immersion- A simple day trip from Marrakech, visit the Argan Cooperative in Ourika to learn how the local women cultivate the argan nut into oils, bu!er and cosmetic products. Join a cooking tour and learn how to make gazelle horn and mint tea or tagine beef and prunes before staying the night at Chez Larbi for full romance in the mountains. The following day, make sure to visit the seven nearby waterfalls to experience the natural beauty of Morocco. CARBONDALE, COLORADO: Sustainable Feast- Carbondale is less than 30 miles from Aspen, making it an easy stop for dinner and drinks. Make a reservation at SIX89 asking for the Local’s prix fixe menu to awaken your taste buds to the magic combo of local foods from

nearby farms. Feast on a three course sampler that might include crisp gnocchi salad, roasted pork shoulder or truffle fries. A"erwards, stroll down the block to the brewery and bar, Beer Works, for a pint of the local brew. If you arrive before dinner, stop off at Avalanche Ranch Hot Springs for a relaxing and rejuvenating soak.
4 Morocco
CANCUN, MEXICO: Culture Twist – Visiting Cancun’s hotel zone and downtown Cancun are two totally different worlds even though they are super close. Venturing out of your hotel only 10 minutes can lead to some truly authentic and one of a kind experiences. Lose the stereotypes regarding mariachi bands and enjoy dinner, albeit a loud dinner, at La Providencia for dueling mariachis while tasting local tequilas and tacos. You are sure WEDDINGNOUVEAU.COM

to make a few new friends while dancing along to the music. If you stay the weekend, take the ferry to Isla Mujeres to enjoy the white sandy beaches and gorgeous teal water without the crowds.
5
TIGRE, ARGENTINA: Authentic Exploration – Only 17 miles north of Buenos Aires, Tigre is a small island town perfect for a weekend escape from the city. A"er shopping in the town center or visiting the notorious art museum, se!le into Il Novo María Luján del Tigre for a great view of the water and a unique take on traditional Argentine foods. Share the steak and pasta, but make sure to taste the “the Singapore”, which is a savory combination of chicken and pumpkin. Spend the rest of the a"ernoon on a catamaran to escape the city on the river. WN

THE SPARKLY LIFE “COME QUICKLY, I AM DRINKING THE STARS.” Those were the words of Dom Perignon, a French monk, when he accidentally created Champagne. Ever since that discovery, France has been considered the most prestigious producer of champagne, due to it’s unique fermentation process, the “champenoise” method. Today sparkling wine (as it’s called, if not made from the champagne region of France) can be found on almost every country and is linked to celebrations of almost all cultures including these top five continental sparkles: Sparkling Wine (India) – This brut (and sometimes off-dry sparkling wine) is made with Chardonnay, Ugnni Blanc or Pinot noir grapes. It pairs very well with moderately spicy food such as Indian, Korean & North African dishes. Try Chateau Indage Omar Khayyam Brut (NV). Cap Clasique (South Africa) Traditionally South African sparkling wine producers use Pinotage and Chenin Blanc grapes to create a light and refreshing taste, like Môreson Cuvee Cape NV. Cava (Spain) - A new world favorite, Cava is the term used to describe
PHOTOGRAPHY by MARIANNE TAYLOR
sparkling wine made in the champenoise method. It’s usually easy to find in the United States and relatively inexpensive. For a taste of Spanish sparkle, try Freixenet Cordon Nedro Extra Dry. Sparkling Wine (USA) - Napa is the most obvious of region bearing the flag for the US and is home to not only American producers but some French wine houses like Tattinger as well. A lesser known region, growing quickly in popularity, is the Finger’s Lake region in New York that produces sparkling wine made from riesling grapes. Try Dr. Konstantin Frank Chateau Frank Celebre (NV).
Shiraz (Australia) - Like many other things, sparkling wine is done a little differently down under! Australia produces its sparkles from a full bodied red wine grape called Shiraz (or Syrah”) with a hint of mild tannins, black pepper, currants, plum and chocolate tastes. Go bold with Australia’s Shingleback “Black Bubbles” Sparkling Shiraz (NV). Let these cross-continental sparkling wines inspire your next event, or at the very least, spark up conversation over a summer-worthy, threecourse gourmet menu (page 110). WN

TINA & KEN
TORONTO, CAN August 14th, 2010
PHOTOGRAPHY by 5IVE 15TEEN
Christina “Tina” Skinner and Kenny Grewal’s vibrant Sikh marriage, or “Anand Karaj”, unfolded amidst a gathering of family and friends, singing Sikh hymns, or Shabads. Traditionally, the couple and their parents (or guardians) will usually stand up and an Ardaas (prayer) is offered in which the blessings of Waheguru (the Giver of Knowledge) is sought before the marriage can begin. This is just the tip of the iceberg in regards to the wealth of customs and traditions unique to Sikh wedding
ceremonies - a reality that may seem overwhelming to a new bride planning her fusion Sikh/ Jewish wedding. For Tina, there was only one answer to her challenge: She enlisting the expertise of one of Canada’s most respected event professionals - Cynthia Martyn of Cynthia Martyn Events, who’s ability to fuse creative design and emotionally-infused details with a burst of color, always makes for a truly fabulous “I Do.”

JULIE & JUSTIN FORT COLLINS, CO May 21st, 2011
PHOTOGRAPHY by FRESH IN LOVE It’s a seductive screenplay of “he said, she said” in which our unsuspecting heroine, a Cambodian-American, “DIY” bride named Julie Chhea pulls off the ultimate fusion wedding to her beau - Justin Arnoldy. “I hoped for a simple wedding that would reflect Justin and I as a couple.” Julie said. “To us, the ‘theme’ of the wedding and all the li!le details did not ma!er as much as having our close friends and family at the wedding. As a friend of mine once said, you don’t realize how many people you can offend until you try to plan your own wedding.” By walking that delicate tight rope between the demands of a traditional Cambodian wedding (a month later) and an indie-hipster affair for the earlier ceremony (such as homemade treats, repurposed props for decor and gothic cake toppers inspired by musical artists like Grateful Dead), both Julie and Justin succeeded in infusing culture, respect and family into each loving moment.

A"er meeting through a popular online dating service, the se!ing for their first date would hold dual benchmarks in retold tales for generations to come. “Kevin proposed at my favorite pizza sangria restaurant.” Mimi said. “It’s the same spot as our first date. I was surprised that he got down on one knee in a restaurant. He’s such a private person. I said yes and thankfully no one really noticed us in the corner.” Fortunately for them, everyone invited to their wedding noticed all the fabulous details and witnessed first hand how, as Mimi put it: An “eclectic couple navigates life in stylish bliss.”

CASSIE & LATISHA JERSEY CITY, NJ September 30th, 2011
PHOTOGRAPHY by STUDIO A IMAGES It was a classic tale of being at “the right place at the right time.” Cassie Andre and Latisha Jones, both pediatric nurses, found each other on the job. On a calm winter night in NYC, following a night out on the town, the couple found themselves presented with a rare opportunity to savor a quiet and snowy manha!an with absolutely no one in sight. Beckoned by the romance that overflows from snow-covered metropolis, Latisha spontaneously got down on one knee and asked Cassie to marry her. “I said absolutely yes!” Cassie said, “We continued to play in the snow and made snow angels. It seemed as if we were the only two in the universe for that moment.” As serendipity would have it, the state of New York legalized same-sex marriage a year later, allowing for fairness and marriage equality for thousands of loving couples, including our playful snow angels. Their simply elegant wedding on the waterfront, was a stylish conversation of personalities, modern style and music.

CASSANDRA & BIMAL
WATERFORD, CT (& CHENNAI, INDIA) June 5th, 2010
The engagement story of Cassandra Atherton to Bimal Das was nothing short of magical. During an arduous flight from Mumbai to New York city, thousands of miles suspended somewhere over Europe, was the perfect stage for a mile-high proposal. “He said we were halfway between where he comes from and I come from” Cassandra
recalled, “and that hopefully we will always be able to meet each other halfway on any differences that may arise.” Cut to a beautiful day in June of 2010, at the Eugene O’Neil Theatre, one of New England’s jewel epicenters for performing arts, culture and for Cassandra and Bimal - the perfect stage for their colorful summer wedding. Faced with the challenges of
PHOTOGRAPHY by ADELINE & GRACE planning a multi-cultural wedding that stayed true to their personal beliefs, the couple enlisted the support of Linda Sample of A Thyme to Cook and Josh Chalmers of Earth2 Company, who among a dream team of professionals, helped bring Cassandra’s and Bimal’s vision to life. “We negotiated the procession to fit who we are and what we believe.” 86

ALYSSA & BRANDON ATLANTA, GA May 28th, 2011
Alyssa Ngangan and Brandon Kitchel first met as undergraduates at Tu"s University in 2003, working in the lab, a prerequisite to any fairytale romance. Convinced that the only way to make a strong impression would be to unleash his “Say Anything” moment, Brandon’s determination to evoke the spirit of John Cusack’s classic character, led to a live guitar serenade - the first of many to follow. Six years later, on Christmas Eve, the stage was set in front of family and friends. Fully aware that Alyssa wouldn’t understand, Brandon surprised her parents by asking them in Thai, for their permission to marry their daughter. Assuming that the proceeding cheers were signs of affirmation and that his message was
not “lost in translation,” Brandon proceeded to ask Alyssa if she understood (which she didn’t). He then got down on one knee, took out the ring, and said “maybe this will help...” If that engagement story doesn’t convey the spirit of love, family and humor that thrives in Alyssa and Brandon’s relationship, then maybe the charming details of their wedding will. Their self described “White-Thai Affair” blended savory bits of personalized style, including fusion cuisine, modern design and a selection of ten favorite song lyrics (ranging from The 90

Then at the wedding, immediately following our more traditional ceremony, we quickly changed into our Thai a!ire while our guests enjoyed some cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres. We then proceeded with a customary Thai water blessing, in which each guest had a chance to wish us well as they poured blessed water over our hands. It was one of our favorite moments.”

SANDRINE & JAMES The tale of Sandrine Doffou and James Detrie spans across several cultures. As a bride of Mauritian-Ivorian descent, it was important that she pay homage to her heritage and family by hosting a ceremony on the land she called home. As for the groom, who’s Franco-British heritage inspired a more traditionally western vibe, the choice to have a formal ceremony seemed natural. The challenge for this cosmopolitan couple, was to appease two distinct cultures with integrity. To maintain the stillness of their intimate engagement off a remote lighthouse in Menorca, Spain, to very energetic wedding events therea"er.
“We wanted a Mauritian wedding with nothing European in it,” James said, “then French people can discover the culture and that made our Mauritian guests proud. In France, it was about religion as we are both Catholics so there is not much difference. We did it our way and never pretended to please anyone!” With a combined guest list of over 320 guests at two separate ceremonies, the experience of planning dual weddings with strikingly different cultural styles (while staying within a reasonable budget) would confirm that age old saying that it truly “takes a village” of family and friends.

“Once the plane reached 30, 000 feet, the pilot announced overhead for me to stand up and then he got down in the aisle and asked.” Once the euphoria of the proposal subsided, the reality of bringing together three distinct cultures: East Indian, West African, and of course - Carribbean, would play a crucial role in deciding what was most important to them. Here’s what Sharan said: “Family and culture are very important to us, and we wanted to include all important events. We had family involved in all events performing various roles. Everyone learned about both cultures. Ge!ing items and people needed for the cultural aspects? We had family perform many roles in the wedding and ordered items from India and Nigeria to bring with us to Jamaica” In the end, Sharan and Jude’s eclectic fusion of ceremonial rites, music and a!ire inspires in all of us the need to love, be loved and to share what’s most important: family. “My favorite moment was at the end of the reception,” Sharan concluded, “everyone wanted to play one more song. The DJ [Kevan Stewart of Jamaica Wedding DJ] played Bob Marley’s ‘One Love’ and all of our guests spontaneously formed a large circle with their arms around one another and were singing along. It was truly a great reflection on how our two families and cultures had melded into one.”

“We lived down the street from each other. We met at Cafe Barrone’s [Palo Alto] through friends.” Xochitl said about how she met Mark. “Sparks started to fly one evening when I said something to Mark in Spanish and he quickly responded back in (much be!er) Spanish. It was a coup de foudre! Unfortunately, all would have to wait. My job took me to Europe and Asia, while Mark explored and travelled through Latin America.” It wasn’t until six years (yes, six) later that Xochitl and Mark would reconnect in San Francisco, where as fate would have it, they discovered that they once again, lived down the street from one other. And so thousands of miles, and a not-soaround-the-corner distance away, the Hacienda de San Antonio, was chosen as the venue for their May wedding. “I focused on who Mark and I are as a couple.” Xochitl said. “I knew that we wanted a very intimate wedding that would allow people to fall in love with Mexico – and introduce them to this culture that is so special to the two of us.”

by BEDAZZLED PHOTOGRAPHY
NEW ORLEANS, LA October 15, 2011
Ah, New Orleans! The city of infectious music, euphoric cuisine, and a gumbo of cultures (pun intended). For Nigerian/SierraLeonean bride, Nkechi James and Jewish American groom, Benjamin Gillman (both lawyers), the decision to host a fun filled wedding in the Big Easy came with it’s share of hurdles and opportunities. “I had to make numerous trips down to New Orleans to meet with vendors and sort out other logistics.” Nkechi said. “Keeping up with my 15-month old son, while planning the wedding, was very challenging at times. Also, keeping the guest list down was difficult because we have a very big network of family and close friends.”

WEDDING PLANNING TIPS
T
he art of blending traditions and cultures in an interfaith wedding requires more time than in a standard wedding. Carefully planning your wedding in advance, while communicating with your friends and family can create a unique experience for everyone.
FIVE THINGS TO AVOID
1
when planning an Interfaith or Intercultural wedding with a friend or family member:
IGNORING YOUR NEW FAMILIES’ HERITAGE. Culture and religious traditions are part of what makes everyone unique. Being insensitive to the needs and desires of each family’s wedding customs can lead to a less than positive beginning to the relationship. Since marriage is a merging of two families into one larger family, interfaith weddings are about blending together cultures, beliefs and customs into one cohesive whole. Be open to this, and it can only heighten the meaning of the entire event, as well as the actual ceremony. To make the wedding more personal, choose a neutral site like a public garden or a hotel rather than the church or synagogue. Finally, many cultures have auspicious dates to marry and definite days to the contrary. A li!le research and planning can alleviate conflicts with holy days.
2 3
CONVINCING YOUR RABBI OR MINISTER TO MARRY YOU. If your clergy is unwilling to work with you because you are an interfaith couple, then it’s time to find a new one. There are many officiants available who will perform your ceremony and not point out all the reasons why your marriage won’t work. SHORT ENGAGEMENTS. During this time, both the couple and the wedding party can celebrate your traditions and customs together. This will give your family and friends time to reflect on sensitive issues to build a solid framework for your married life together. It will also give you time to get to know each other and develop a bond between each other.
4 5
WAITING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO PLAN THE CEREMONY. Start early and plan ahead. The goal is to create a personalized ceremony where everyone leaves feeling enriched and included. Many couples put off planning their ceremonies because of the issues involved. UNINTENTIONALLY EXCLUDING YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS. The last thing you want to do is make your family and guests feel uncomfortable. Make sure to have your officiant explain each ritual they perform. This can be done with a short description. Follow up with a personalized program that includes explanations and the order of your ceremony. Your guests can read about the rituals, while waiting for the ceremony to begin. Include your family in the planning and the ceremony. Take time to learn about each other’s backgrounds. Acknowledge similarities and celebrate your diversity. Successful interfaith weddings require compromise, flexibility and open-mindedness. WN
Talk openly with your partner and parents. Let them express their views and opinions. Flexibility and open communication is key to a successful event. PHOTOGRAPHY by SUTHI PICOTTE

Place the pot in the rice cooker and cook according to the machine’s directions. Once done, remove lid and drizzle in the remaining coconut milk. Add a few pinches of salt and fluff the rice. Gently remove the chilled rice from the molds and slide into the pot with oil. Fry the rice shapes until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes and then drain on paper towels. Using the same pot of oil, fry the quail for 4-5 minutes until golden. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Carefully cut away the twine. Plate the quail with crispy rice shapes. Take a brush and coat the crispy quail with the reduced sauce. Serve warm.
