Daily Journal: Monday 18th January 2016: Today we had an introduction to our new project which has been based around graphic design and visual communication. We were shown a film based on the typeface, ‘helvetica’ and we were asked to write a 500 word review on the film. We also cut up coloured card to create backgrounds as practice for our magazine. This helped show us about good placement of things. Tuesday 19th January 2016: Today we brought in our own magazines that were based on our theme and we created a magazine page using cuttings from our magazine. We used an A2 piece of paper to do so and our page had to include three black boxes and three columns of text. Thursday 21st January 2016: We designed 9 flags for Canterbury City after watching a video on what makes a great flag and then we also designed 9
flags for Great Britain that had to either show an acceptance of all religion or couldn’t show any sign of religion at all. Then we used our previous designs to create a final flag design overall. Friday 22nd January 2016: We had an introduction to using the software ‘Adobe InDesign’ in the morning. This is the software we’ve used to create our magazines. In the afternoon we had some time to do some research on our magazine and its theme. We were to take a look at the common layouts and colours used.
Thursday 28th January 2016: Today I worked on putting my magazine together and completing my artist research and film review. Friday 29th January 2016:
Monday 25th January 2016: We had the mac room booked for the day to begin setting up our magazines pages and columns. Tuesday 26th January 2017: We created more magazine pages like we did on the Tuesday before however this time we did them digitally so we could add them into our magazine. They still had to have three black boxes and colums.

Helvetica film review: My thoughts on the Helvetica film are that I feel the film opened up a more detailed understanding for me where jobs are concerned for those aspiring to be graphic designers. It was informative on the importance of the typeface Helvetica and how it is around us in every day life. As it’s a documentary it contained tonnes of factual information, which is very useful. Old and young graphic designers were interviewed which I felt was great as it gave diverse views on being a graphic designer and each individual had something different to offer. The font has become the most universal default font over the past 50 years so if a documentary was to be done on a font then the font should be Helvetica. There were some rather humorous moments in the film and there were many shots of logos and street signs, which emphasised the idea that Helvetica is, as a matter of fact, everywhere!
There are also many versions of Helvetica. Some of these are also shown during the film. This is definitely a film that’s perfect for those that enjoy getting technical and who have a genuine love for design and visual communication. My complaints about this documentary are that I feel an hour and a half is much longer than necessary for a documentary on a typeface. There were also moments in the film where they repeated themselves, such as showing too many examples, which longed it out and made me want to fast forward. That was unnecessary. I think that if they had stuck to a 45-minute documentary rather than a film then it would have been a lot better. The film is great for those who understand and love graphic design but the film is rather too long and boring for those where graphic design and visual communication is
not in their best interest. As I am one of these people who do not particularly enjoy graphic design I wouldn’t choose to watch this film again. However I do feel that for those who wish to take up graphic design this is a great film and well worth watching because I feel they’ll appreciate the information that the film has to offer as it holds some great footage and really captures an understanding on what it is to work as a graphic designer everyday.

Top Tip! Balance the dark colour of your suit by using bright accessories. A bow tie, tie or cravat is a traditional acessory which we feel never gets old! Here are some we just love:

Wedding cakes! Finding the perfect wedding cake can be difficult as you’ve got to stick to a budget and a theme for your wedding. There are various styles of wedding cake and it’s important to know which one would accomplice your wedding look perfectly. To the right there’s a simple and traditional white, 3 teir wedding cake. It’s elegant and suits a big white wedding perfeclly but below there are some styles that may take your fancy if you prefer something that’s a little more colourful or untraditional.
Cupcake style wedding cakes are a cute modern touch and are growing in popularity for weddings. Square wedding cakes are a bit less usual to the common round style.
A chocolate flavoured wedding cake can still be made to look beautiful for those that aren’t keen on the traditional fruit cake or plain sponge. Chocolate icing is also another option if you prefer.

Flowers There are so many different flowers. Roses, lillies and tulips are common for a bridal boquet. Each bridesmaid needs a boquet as well. Flowers are also used for decoration around the wedding venues. It’s important to match your colour scheme if you want an elegant wedding. Below there’s a diagram of the various kinds of wedding boquets that you can have. Each provides a description on the boquet.

Wedding Magazine Issues: Perfect Wedding: This is by far the most popular wedding magazine on the market at the moment. It’s easily buyable as it’s found in your local supermarket. This magazine’s style is what I used to create mine. There’s little writing inside but a fair amount on the cover. It’s an A5 size magazine and covers everything you need to know about weddings. I think it’s a perfect size and the presentation is always really good. It has lots of offers and money saving tips inside it as well which is always a bonus. This is a great magazine. Brides: This magazine is rather similar to the one I’ve mentioned above. It held great amounts of information on everything needed for a wedding. It shows fresh new ideas in every newly released issue. It is, in my opinion, another perfect magazine. It’s hard to cover every area of weddings but the producers managed with
this magazine. It’s another A5 size magazine which seems to be a theme for wedding magazines, along with various different fonts in different colours. There is a lot of advertisment in this magazine so if that’s not for you then I wouldn’t reccommend this issue. Wedding ideas: This is definitely a wedding magazine that is more, as the title reads, idea based. It doesn’t try to sell you lots of things but it does try to open up your mind to all the possible themes, colour schemes and fashion for a up to date, fashionable wedding. It’s useful for those who probably want a genuine theme for their wedding rather than those who might prefer a traditional kind of wedding theme. If you want an affordable wedding day then this is also the magazine for you. There are a lot of things that you could probably make yourself in here. The magazine is very well put together
and does give some good advice which is what you need from a wedding magazine. Bridal Guide: This is a magazine that has very beautiful gowns in store. The photography used compliments the magazine perfectly. This magazine is very highly acclaimed already and it’s obvious why. It holds lots of wedding advice and is great for those that aren’t sure of what they really want for their dream wedding day. Like the other wedding magazines, it covers everything that you’ll need to know about, including honeymoons.

Editors Note: This project for me was challenging but I enjoyed doing it on weddings and I feel that I’ve presented my magazine professionally as I spent time checking to see how a real wedding magazine is set out. It’s made me realise how much time and work goes into getting everything perfect where graphics and visual communication are concerned. I do think that, although I did struggle, it was worth it as I’ve produced a magazine that is quite accurate in terms of presentation. I don’t think I’d want to do it again but only for the reason that I found the software challenging to use and the editing a struggle. The time limit was also something I found difficult. I feel the flag part of the project could have been spent on doing something to do with our subject at hand. It was hard to fit everything in on time. I did try my best and I actually feel that this is possibly my most successful project so far.
This project did open up job oppertunity ideas for me and I’ve learnt a lot about magazines and the importance of fontsizes and the typeface used. Beforehand, I didn’t realise the significance these features had. Overall I found this a struggle for me and it’s made me realise that graphic design and visual communication is perhaps not the best thing for me but I did enjoy the project and I feel that i’ve worked to the best of my ability and achieved the majority of the goals that were set for us.
