There’s also our own guide for beginners on what surfboard to get for where you live with an insight on some new wetsuit designs We also have some news about some of the surfing competions that will take place around Joss Bay in Broadstairs and Bude and Newquay in Cornwall. You can also find out about Joss Bay Surf School and what’s going on there in this magazine.
What’s hot at Joss?
Joss Bay is the number one surfing beach in Kent. People come from all over the county to surf here. It’ss prone to having big waves. Waves at Joss Bay have reached up to 14ft. We managed to go down there and take a look at the waves that are there. On a good surf day you can expect waves of about 5ft. It’s great fun and also a real workout as surfing is classed as an extreme sport. There’s also a surf school here at
the beach where people can have lessons. A group surf lesson is £38 and a one on one lesson is £80. They also do one on two lessons for £120. They also have stand up paddle board (SUP) lessons available for similar prices. Surfing has grown in popularity since 2000 and the surf school is quite popular. They also have a surf shop situated on the beach which sells things from wetsuits and accessories to boards and wax for your board.
The owners are always ready to help and the surf shop also has boards and wetsuits along with accessories for hire at reasonable prices. The equipment availbale for hire is of good quality as well. You’re in safe hands if you surf at Joss Bay with the lifeguards patrolling the beach. You get people of all ages surfing down there as well.
AN Interview with a surfer. We were lucky enough to have a local surfer offer us an interview and himself as a model. We asked a series of questions to which he gave detailed responses. Here’s the interview: SSUK: How long have you been surfing? Surfer: Around about five years here. I travel to Cornwall often and have entered several competitions. SSUK: Have you ever won any competions? Surfer: I’ve come third once but no, there are some amazing surfers out there. There’s the Wheels and Finn’s festival which happens every year here. It’s a real laugh. SSUK: That’s great. Are there any surf shops around? Surfer:There’s a surf and skate shop in town
called Revolution. There’s also the Wheels and Finns shop in the highstreet. SSUK: That’s pretty cool. What’s the Wheels and Finns festival like? Surfer: It’s great. You get to meet surfers from all over England and some of them are seriously good. It’s just a laugh at the end of the day and I really enjoy watching surfing as well as taking part in it. SSUK: How much is the average surfboard from the shops round here? Surfer: Well for a fibreglass board that’s around about 6ft they’re about £450 at the least if they’re brand new. But you can get a foamboard for about £100 new. I get my boards secondhand in Cornwall. You can get
some great deals over there. My board is 6ft 4. It’s good to have a board that’s at least an inch or two taller than you. I’m looking at getting an 8ft longboard which is better for the waves here. SSUK: That’s interesting. So you own more than one board? Surfer: Yeah I own 3 at the moment. I am constantly looking at offers online. Boards range from about £230 secondhand to £1,000 new. SSUK: Thank you very much for your informative responses.

Editors Note: This magazines purpose was to show the world about Surfing in the UK. I have photographed, edited and written every piece in this magazine. It’s all my own work. I wanted to produce a piece that was based on my other hobby and I’ve achieved it. There are many surfing magazines out there but not many are based around the UK. They’re all about Australia or America. I think the best part for me was the photography, I thoroughly enjoyed being hands on and using various cameras to get different effects. The interview was fun and I enjoyed hearing other surfers converse with me about our shared passion. After looking at many surf magazines over the project I realised they’re all about photography. There’s barely any writing. The design base is quite simple but artistic and authentic.
