MEET ROBERT LINDEN HILLS ASSISTANT FRONT END MANAGER What brought you to the co-op? I’ve always aimed to work for places that are less profit-driven and care about giving back to the community. I was a customer of Linden Hills before I was an employee and I loved the neighborhood feel and personal customer service the employees provide. You started in the Grocery department. Why did you decide to move to the Front End? I see Twin Cities Co-op Partners as a long-term career for me, so when a job in management opened in the Front End, I jumped at the chance. As
someone who considers himself a “people person” the Front End seemed like a perfect fit. I love the Change Matters “I WAS A CUSTOMER OF LINDEN HILLS BEFORE I WAS AN EMPLOYEE AND I LOVED THE NEIGHBORHOOD FEEL AND PERSONAL CUSTOMER SERVICE THE EMPLOYEES PROVIDE.”
program. I’m proud to work for a store that supports small local farmers and companies that are environmentally conscious. I also really enjoy interacting with all the wonderful staff here who always put me in a good mood.
What Change Matters group are you most excited to support? I was excited to raise funds for TC Food Justice because food waste is one of those things that keeps me up at night. The U.S. wastes 30–40% of the food supply while 16 million American children struggle with hunger every year. I think TC Food Justice is a really innovative program that can help bridge that gap and I’m happy we had a chance to support them. How do you spend your time outside of work? I’m a musician. I went to school for audio engineering and work as an audio editor for the premier hip hop podcast The Cipher. We’ve had some notable celebrity guests like Jonah Hill, Johnny Rotten and Bobby Brown but mostly focus on underground and old-school artists. Last summer, I got a chance to record interviews backstage at the Sound Set festival and was able to meet a lot of my rap idols.

MEET ALEX CATERING AND WHOLESALE MANAGER
How did you end up in the catering world? I feel like I’ve been in the catering world forever! I started in college doing seasonal catering for VIP and premium customers at Vikings, Twins and Gopher games. It worked perfectly around my class schedule and I was working with friends, so I thought it was the best job. From there, it’s been something I’ve always stayed connected with regardless of where I’ve been. I’ve worked in both the planning and event sides of catering. Catering involves a lot of planning and good customer service skills, which I love. What are your favorite items on the catering menu? One of my absolute favorites is our new Up North platter. It is a unique option that includes delicious regional offerings like pickle ham roll-ups, smoked trout, Ellsworth cheese curds and our WedgeMade baguette and focaccia breads. For lunch, I’ll always go for our vegan Cilantro Peanut Tofu Wrap. I just love the fresh flavors. (You can also get this wrap in our stores!) What do you love about your job? I really enjoy helping to develop our seasonal menus. It gives us

a chance to make sure we’re offering the best options, keeping our menu fresh, and finding new ways to expand our reach. More broadly, I love that my job allows me to connect with so many people across TCCP and in our community. We work with amazing non-profits, community organizations, co-ops and other local businesses and build strong relationships. I enjoy working closely with our stores and Co-op Partners Warehouse to make sure things are running smoothly for our catering and wholesale businesses.

What do you like to do for fun? For fun outside of work, I’m usually trying new restaurants with friends. There’s always something fun opening around the Cities and we love to check out new places. I also really love to travel. Recently, I went to Joshua Tree National Park and I’ve traveled around Vietnam, India, Nepal and Europe on past trips. Australia is next on my list, fingers crossed!
ABOUT OUR WHOLESALE BUSINESS Through our wholesale business, we distribute our best-selling, made-from-scratch artisan and sandwich breads, deli salads, and take & bake items to local co-ops and businesses. Every day, we deliver artisan and sandwich breads directly from the Bakehouse at the Wedge Table to a number of local restaurants and co-ops including Bad Waitress, Seward Co-op, Eastside Co-op and Mississippi Market. Co-op Partners Warehouse delivers our bulk deli salads and take & bake items items to customers in a 7-state area. Our top items are Alpha Omega Salad, Red Curry Tofu, Local Mac & Cheese and West African Peanut Stew.

About the Expert Jaime has been the floral buyer and plant sale manager at the Wedge for seven years. She attended the Institute of Floristry at Koehler and Dramn in 2016. In her spare time, she operates a wedding floral business with her best friend. She refers to this as a “hobby business,” since they both have full-time jobs. Jaime has done the flowers for many weddings and some freelance work for Minnesota florist Ashley Fox at the 2018 Super Bowl.

Where do our plants come from? Our plants come from multiple distributors. My favorite company we work with is Len Busch, located in Plymouth, MN. Their business started in the late 1800’s, when their great grandfather grew vegetables on Lyndale Avenue in Minneapolis. Over a hundred years later, the Busch family provides us with locally-grown flowers and plants including tulips, snap dragons, spray roses, daffodils, potted blooming plants, poinsettias and bulb gardens. As the floral buyer for the Wedge and Linden Hills, I am always on the hunt for new interesting plants and flowers. I get a lot of good recommendations from my fellow coworkers, Madeleine and Char Lee, both huge plant enthusiasts.

How to Take Care of your Houseplant The first essential step in becoming a successful plant parent is researching all the new plants you bring home. You can find the scientific or common name on your plant’s container.

CPW works with first-time producers to make their products successful by giving feedback on packaging and pricing, as well as creating wholesale monthly specials, and assisting with marketing materials. By working with CPW, small companies expand their reach to a sevenstate distribution area and increase their visibility to co-ops and natural foods stores. You Betcha Kim Chi “We started You Betcha Kimchi in a very fragrant Whittier apartment. It’s a Minnesota twist on a Korean classic with 100% locally-grown, organic vegetables directly sourced from local farmers. Even the ginger is local, which provides You Betcha Kim Chi with that signature zing. In 2015, Linden Hills Co-op was the first local co-op to carry our product, and the Wedge picked it up shortly after. In 2017, we started distributing our product through Co-op Partners Warehouse. Big Watt Coffee “Big Watt started humbly in the basement of the original Five Watt Coffee shop in South Minneapolis, with the goal of taking simple and tasty cold press into the world without compromising the quality of ingredients and unparalleled flavor. That long—and sometimes difficult—journey brought us to today: three unique canned Cold Press Coffees (with more on the way) distributed to 18 states and growing. “My family moved to the Linden Hills neighborhood in 2004 and became co-op members shortly thereafter. I began home-brewing kombucha in 2006 and after many compliments from friends decided to make a business of it. Linden Hills Co-op was my very first account, and after years of my children watching me home-brew and dream of starting a business, it was a real treat to take the kids to the co-op and see Deane’s Kombucha on the shelf for the first time. Today our top stores include Linden Hills Co-op, the Wedge and The Wedge Table. Coop Partners Warehouse is my primary distributor. Over the past four years, my relationship with these businesses has grown; improving the stores, operations, participating in community outreach and supporting local business. This relationship has been instrumental in my success and growth.”
Cosmic Cacao Bars “Cosmic Cacao was founded in Minneapolis in May of 2018. My journey began with a serious love for the cacao plant and has resulted in a whole new life. I believed so strongly in the dream of creating a bar that is seriously indulgent and good for your body. 4 Helpful Foods for Mental Health By Emily Truscott, Tubman
As part of a broad continuum of services for people who have experienced trauma, Tubman offers a licensed outpatient clinic with mental health and chemical health services, as well as a co-occurring program for people with simultaneous mental and chemical health issues. “At Tubman, we try to consider the whole person when treating mental and chemical health challenges. We believe—we know – that healthy bodies support healthy minds. We believe adding access to nutrition and supporting clients to consider nutrition as part of their ‘treatment plan’ will support their overall healing journey,” said Dr. Birgit Olsen Kelly, Director of Clinical Services at Tubman. A few commonly recommended foods to boost mental health include:
GREEN VEGGIES Broccoli, kale, spinach, and others all contain valuable nutrients like iron, potassium, fiber, folic acid, and more that help balance our bodies and minds.
YOGURT The probiotics in yogurt cultures help us digest and absorb other foods to better use their nutrients, as well as lowering stress.
FISH (like salmon or albacore tuna) Try replacing your red meat with fish to boost your omega-3 fatty acid intake and vitamin D to help reduce anxiety.
WHOLE GRAINS Foods with whole grains can boost serotonin. Be mindful of choosing complex carbs with whole grains and avoiding “simple carbs” with more heavily processed white flour.
Consider timing and frequency. Sometimes, spicy foods, protein at certain times of the day, or reducing sugar or “heavy” foods can help address symptoms of depression and anxiety. Some people have found that cutting back on sugar and sodas helps to decrease mood and energy swings throughout the day, and boosts energy overall. When it comes to beverages, simply replacing sugary and caffeinated beverages with more ounces of water can help calm your body and mind. Always consult with your health care professionals, physical and mental, about changing or supplementing your approach to managing your mental health. SERVE ON OUR BOARD! The board is seeking candidates who can engage in respectful debate and dialogue, bringing their unique perspectives and skills to the conversation. As owner-elected stewards of the co-op, the TCCP Board of Directors supports the operations, staff, and stakeholders who make up our food community. The board strives to support the co-op’s pursuits of delivering profitability and re-investment in the business; continues to ensure TCCP’s promise to derive value from consolidation; and oversees each business unit of TCCP to create positive experiences for everyone we serve: employees, owners, community, vendors. Wedge Table In partnership with Mississippi Market, Seward Co-op, Eastside Co-op and Lakewinds Food Co-op, we’re hosting a panel discussion on food access in the Twin Cities. Come learn about the important work local organizations are doing to increase food access and the co-ops’ impact through the MN FoodShare March Campaign, a grassroots effort that supports 285 food shelves across the state. Each co-op will invite a panelist from one of their food access partners and representative from the MN FoodShare March Campaign will moderate the panel. 18
