When we introduced the initial project to create a cookbook of our multicultural students' favorite dishes from their home country, we were met with confusion. We explained the concept of a recipe and how it can be used to recreate a favorite dish, but the concept was completely foreign to them. Every student had a dish in mind, and each student knew how to cook their dish, only they didn't learn from a written recipe, and neither did those teaching them. We worked through the various recipes, trying to gather some semblance of a cookbook. Students experimented with photography and typographies, discovered new snacks, and were exposed to new ideas they had never imagined. The result of this exploration period was far better than any cookbook we could have imagined. The true nature of this program can be seen in the end product - a zine perfectly encapsulating how we adapted our project and grew as a group to recreate something that was representative of the students and their growth through the project.
