Tonnur Lake
B V Prakash, renowned travel writer and an avid mountaineer takes you to Tonnur (Thondanur) close to Mandya replete with history and scenic beauty! is the Venugopalaswamy temple with a large courtyard and artistic drawings. The unique feature of the idol here is, the legs are crossed from behind! Across the road is the simple shrine of Nambi Narayanswamy. The deity flanked by consorts is holding Shankha in the right hand and Chakra in the left unlike the usual way. You can also visit the Yoganarasimha temple where an image of Sri Ramanujacharya with seven hooded cobra can be seen.
Tucked away amidst the green fields and rustic surroundings is a small village called Tonnur in Mandya district. What is special about this place? Well there is a vast lake of blue waters framed by gentle hillocks and rocky boulders to afford a picturesque view. The little town also has a couple of temples that have some unique features. At about 130 kms from the city, this should be an ideal weekend getaway! Being close to the temple town of Melkote, many visitors who go there also make it here for a quick visit to the lake
and temples. However, for those who wish to exclusively spend some quiet moments in the midst of nature a daytrip to Tonnur is suitable. As one enters Tonnur, the lake will not be seen as it is bounded by a long bund. Climbing up the bund you will be thrilled by the beauty of the vast blue lake. The horizon is lined with the hills of Kunthi Betta. Sit on one of the benches or paragola and enjoy the view or take a short stroll along. Getting into waters or swimming in the lake should be avoided for safety reasons. A short distance away Page - 8
Getting there: Drive on Mysore road to (a little beyond) Mandya and then follow the road to Pandavapura (25kms) Ask for Tonnur road and drive further for about 8 kms. Many buses ply from Mandya also.
