Forward bending postures are inward directed, quieting postures that bring us literally in touch with ourselves! It is believed that forward bend asanas are very confrontational. These poses force us to look into ourselves and some people may not like what they are faced with when they do so. If a person is egocentric or stubborn or very fearful and unable to surrender, forward bends insist that they look within and face their shortcomings. It is natural during these poses to feel afraid or angry. If this happens, one should just acknowledge the feeling and let it pass.

Forward Bending asanas move the spine into the shape it adopts in the womb, the primary curve. This action creates space between each vertebra, which benefits the nerves, improving circulation around the spine. As nerves from every organ, run through the spinal cord, this improved circulation has a positive impact on every bodily function, especially that of the brain. The compression, massage and fresh flush of circulation that a forward bend offers, benefits the abdominal organs including the liver, kidneys, pancreas and intestines. Anatomically, forward bending asanas, lengthen the hamstrings and inner leg muscles, keep back muscles supple, and strengthen the knees and front of the legs.
Folding into our selves quiets the mind and encourages a meditative mindset, encourages surrender, letting go and acceptance! The force of deep breathing and pressure of forward bends massages the internal organs and may alleviate digestive complaints and relieve gas. Forward bends assist Samana Vayu, the balancing air, which regulates digestion, menstruation, body temperature, as well being attached to the ego- processing our likes and dislikes (aided by the introverting influence of forward bends). Apana Vayu obviously benefits, from the toning action of Baddha Konasana on organs responsible for urination, defecation, ejaculation, menstruation and child birth. . Personally, I have found forward bends often more frustrating than calming, over time, they have taught me patience, waiting for my tight hamstrings to release is always more beneficial than trying to force them! The first question these asanas prompted me to ask is 'why do I dread forward bends?' Then as my yoga practice evolves, asking deeper questions of myself. Enquiring why I might be so impatient - and why I always want to be jumping on to something else, than to be in the present, why I'd rather look outside myself rather than looking within. Also aiming to balance this enquiry with the intention to be content, wherever I am, knowing that it is just as futile to grasp for stillness in the mind, as it is to try to force openness in the body - that both will come in time, with practice.

Remember…the most difficult task is to 'surrender the ego to our own self'; it is possible through forward bending asanas! Om tat sat 'Yoga Acharya' V Sunitha

Travel Medamaranahalli Kere, a scenic water-body tucked away amidst serene surroundings 50 kms from Bangalore, is where B V Prakash, an accomplished travel writer and mountaineer takes us this weekend‌
Medamaranahalli Kere natural setting opens up slowly. In spite of an Industrial area nearby, the villages are so quiet and slow paced that you feel a great relief from the buzz.
Bangalore rural district is dominated by vast acres of cultivation fields and quaint villages, where the main occupation of the people is agriculture. There are a number of lakes and reservoirs hidden amongst these villages!
At Medamaranahalli, a small road goes to the right and goes along the bund. It is possible to park the vehicle here and climb up the bund and get a view of the vast lake. You can also take a walk along till the dam and come back. But, it is all open and care should taken, especially with children. You can also reach the lake getting down a precarious path between bushes. But it can more enjoyable to approach from the north. It is also little easier there. Drive up further for about 500 meters and you will find a path on the right to the tank bund. From here the view is better with the tall hill of Harohalli forming the background behind the vast blue lake. There is a green meadow in front of the lake where you can rest and relax or even play some games. Getting into water is not advised. The other side of the reservoir that is to the west is also picturesque with green fields and trees. There is also another small lake beyond Medamaranahalli to the left from the Main Road!
As these water bodies are within the rural setting often lined with trees and shrubs, they have turned into scenic spots where city dwellers can find peace! One such hidden reservoir is at an obscure village called Medamaranahalli.
