a long time resident “I have been here for eight years. When I came here, I thought it is going to be a pensioner’s paradise for being calm, and laid back with barely anything around. But looking at what it has today, it is a paradise of a different kind. Pensioners like me surely don’t have to go anywhere else to shop”.

What seemed like a nondescript way to reach farm houses and the then ‘picturesque’ Hennur Bande…a decade ago, is turning out to be a mash of colorful life, far beyond what one could have been imagined!

The road actually originates at Lingarajapuram with the famous Dr. Chandrashekar Institute of Speech and Hearing as a popular flag post and meanders into a serpentine one with small commercial establishments, the famous Chennakesava Temple onto the ‘bosom’ of HRBR Layout 3rd Block!

The action starts here!

R M Supermarket, the newly opened Johnny Walker boutique one side and Anupama Restaurant on the other to the sprawling Hennur Bus Depot to reach the ORR.

As you move from the ring road, onto Hennur and travel forward towards Kothanur, the numerous product and service shops lining either side of this road is sure to catch one’s attention. Hennur Police Station, Hennur Bande, Freedom Foundation, Indian Academy and Bible College…well known from ages in close vicinity, vie with recently opened Domino’s Pizza, Reliance Fresh, Mandovi Motors, Seven

From hardware and furniture shops to nurseries, to pet shops, to a multitude of options with local grocers itself, the Hennur Road is bustling with activity all the time. And it is also a fact that almost every shop thrives here; they ought to, considering the thousands of people living around who find the city a tad unappealing for their day-to-day purchases.

From just a drive down, we are sure to notice the numerous educational institutions around here – schools to colleges to technical training centers. who come here every day will understand and know how much it has to offer. I barely find myself going outside its vicinity to buy anything” says Arun, a student of a ‘prestigious’ college on this road.

It is not just about shops and eateries, many established builders have seen the potential this road and its surrounding areas have and invested in luxury apartment constructions. Already built ones are filling up quickly. A wide road and constant efforts from the local corporation to widen and smoothen it out is making it a pleasure to ride over the road. It is also the secret route to help people reach the airport faster!

For a place that is seen to be isolated from the city, the Hennur Main Road and beyond is sure to show you how accessible a place can be for people from all walks and talks of life. A road whose character is inconsistent, yet intriguing all the same… K Ramya ramsdom@gmail.com CMYK
