Neighborhood
Its 'show-time' folks… this Christmas! Christmas is round the corner and our neighborhood is slowly gearing up to the spirit of Yuletide! And, what better time than now to introduce a 'unique' Show-Choir…that is run by passionate young individuals to you! Choirs are a familiar sight during Christmas, where young and old hail the spirit of Lord Jesus Christ with various songs; be it in a church or public gatherings. Generally, the atmosphere is staid and in tune with orchestra rules. But, this show-choir is different! Started by Serita Issac, a healthcare professional and a NRI settled in Bangalore (HBR Layout) last year has now seen the like of many expat students, IT professionals, Students all vying with each other to take this 'SPIRIT' Choir to greater heights.
Sports Day at Kindle Kare Kindle Kare pre-school, HBR Layout (which also has infant care) celebrated their 9th Annual Sports Day recently that witnessed enthusiastic performances by tiny-tots to the cheer of parents. Ph: 2271 3337 / 99805 45600

Says Serita “Show Choirs are popular in the West… Basically, the concept is the same, but we give a different tilt to popular songs and sing them in gay abandon!” Currently, the group has 18 members who are being trained by Serita to perfection. The most important facet or requirement of any choir is the voice and how we use it during modulation. Since, the output comes from a group of people; sync becomes the vital key in the success of the choir. Serita goes on to add “Bangaloreans can sing beautifully…but they always 'hold back' which is why training is required”. A compliment from an individual whose repertoire is impeccable! She holds a BA (Hons.) in Digital Film & Television and has interned at Broadway Academy Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia. Apart from this, she has achieved distinction in Piano and Singing Grade exams. Serita's resume is very impressive! To name a few…she has performed/conducted Carmen (a musical adaptation of Georges Bizet's opera), Potter and Pals musical, Snow White - The Musical to standing ovations at Malaysia! As a show-choir, apart from wearing costumes that fit the theme…members sing and enact scenes with no inhibitions! To quote a point…the song 'Circle of Life' from Lion King will have a definitive tilt when this choir performs. It could be the lyrics (which may be added) or the rhythm or even the pitch; any song the choir sings will be adapted to the mood and theme! Sumps up, Serita “Anyone can join our group…There is no age-bar. All you need is a good voice and willingness to enjoy!” The members meet during weekends at her office in HBR Layout and JAM. Also in the line is an own album! IMPORTANT: Serita and her group (SPIRIT show-choir) are willing to perform for community causes in our neighborhood

Yoga 'Acharya' Sunithaji The term 'Surya Namaskar' means 'salutation to the Sun'. Surya Namaskar is an exercise sequence, which has both physical and spiritual aspects. On the physical side, it involves a series of asanas or yogic postures which provide the body with a most complete exercise. Virtually all the parts of the body, including the thoracic and abdominal organs, are exercised and rejuvenated with vitality. Spiritually, it is a method of propitiating the Sun-god and soliciting his blessings. These include quick progress in meditation, a sharp intellect, a sound health, and acquisition of spiritual wisdom. The blood is oxygenated by the practice of these Sun Salutations. This one fact, is great news for your heart and the cardio-vascular system! As a result, these can be practiced by anyone who is interested in maintaining his or her heart. It is generally agreed that your heart is the most important muscle in your entire body, so this is most likely, the most important physical benefit of all. This is just a small example of the many benefits you will discover from regular practice of Sun Salutations and Yoga. Apart from the physical level, Surya Namaskar helps in keeping you stress free and rejuvenate your mind, because, it promotes the circulation of fresh oxygen to your brain. Sun salutation is treated as the best among all yoga exercises for human body because it stretches and reinforces all the major muscles in the body and also exercises the respiratory system. Also, it is a warm up or body toning exercise that helps you to reinforce the body. It is also a great method of breathing control. If you are suffering from sleeplessness then, Surya Namaskar is the best medicine! Most importantly, Surya Namaskar makes your body flexible and strong; your mind focused! OM TAT SAT IMPORTANT NOTE: Pregnant women, Patients of hernia and high blood pressure, People suffering from back conditions should seek proper advice before commencing Surya Namaskar. Between the jungles of Bannerghatta National park and the shrub lands of Harohalli, is one of the most beautiful lakes! The lake is called Thattekere. Situated on the fringes of Bannerghatta wild life area, this lovely lake hidden by the hills can be approached either from Bannerghatta Anekal side or from Harohalli side on Kanakapura Road. As the former route involves passing through the protected forests the later is a better one. The surroundings of Harohalli itself have quite a few lakes spread around. But these are easily seen from the road as you drive along and are also less pristine in the sense that one can see the litter and signs of visitors. Thattekere is certainly less visited comparatively which has helped it retain its charm to some extent. But the lake itself is just on the boundaries of the national park and so a word of permission from the forest guards at the gate would enable one to visit. The southern side of the lake adjoins the village where it should not be difficult to go. Also the temple at the edge of the forest boundary is frequented by devotees from nearby villages. The temple is named and dedicated to Kanive Mahadeshwaraswamy, the main deity. There is also a shrine of Kanive Anjaneyaswamy next to it. A choultry has also been constructed here for pilgrims visiting in large numbers during the annual festivals and fairs. Drinking water facility has also been provided.

The surroundings are very charming with dense jungles of Bannerghatata NP which is also referred to as Mahadeshwaraswamy reserve forest after the temple here. Wildlife in abundant in this sanctuary and there are chances of sighting deer, mongoose, fox or peacock if luck is with you. For the avid birder, the list of species of avifauna that can be seen here should be quite long. Anyway venturing into the national park without proper permission and a guide is not advisable. The Thattekere Lake is a place of great tranquility! With moderately high hills on north and east and the edge of the waters lined with Eucalyptus trees on one side and the jungle trees on other side, the lake itself is in very quiet and peaceful environs. But a word of caution though! The lake itself has crocodiles which involve high risk of getting into the water but the waters quench the thirst of many wild animals! Sighting an elephant herd is also possible. So being in the vicinity of wildlife area, one should take utmost precautions, especially the help of forest guards. Thattekere is also a favorite spot with birdwatchers and photographers. Getting there: Drive on Kanakapura road till Harohalli (40kms) Here take the road to left going towards Anekal for 13 kms to reach the village of Thattekere. Here a mud road to the right for a km, brings you to the forest gate where the temples and the lake are visible. Food needs to be carried.
