Health 'Yoga Acharya' Dr. Sunithaji in this 'insightful' article explains the menstrual cycle and its inherent issues offering solutions to deal with it…

My dear woman; Know thyself! life." Lara Owen - "Her Blood is Gold" A women's cycle and the lunation cycle (moon phases) are the same cycle. Before electricity, women ovulated when the moon was full, and bled when the moon was dark. The pineal gland in our brain sends messages to our ovary, by hormones, to release an egg based on the amount of light our brain senses in the night when we are asleep. At the point of most light in the night, the full moon, we are programmed to ovulate. Women who live in the country side are more likely to be in sync with the moon, as are women living in primitive cultures.

"The whole menstrual cycle is an alchemical process in itself, during which every woman who bleeds goes through a transformation inside herself. To menstruate means to live through a cyclical transmutation in which the past is shed and the new in embraced. Experiencing this transformation through conscious ritual awakens us to our connection with the cycles taking place all around us and to our relationship with all

Ovulating at the full moon means we bleed at the dark of the moon, the time when the energy is more inwardly focused anyway. The average menstrual cycle is the same as the lunation cycle 28 days. Modern life with artificial lights and constantly bright nights has disrupted our natural inclination to be in synchrony with the moon. The biological blueprint for our fertility cycle is very different to how it happens now. Imagine the disruption this creates. Not only are we meant to be synchronized with the moon phases, we are also meant to be synchronized with each other. The crankiness, impatience or annoyance

so infamously called Premenstrual Syndrome, that we experience in the last two weeks of our cycle, is really more about the feelings we have because we are not flowing with what our body really wants us to do - that is slow down, withdraw from the busyness of the outside world and look after yourself, not everybody else. You will be surprised to know, that the red dot (bindi, bottu or tilak) that Hindu women put between their eyebrows, on their third eye, used to be menstrual blood and was done so to invoke the potential visionary aspect inherent in the blood time. Our blood carries with it all our genetic information and our ancestors' genetic information, so this practice could open our third eye to specific personal information and ancient knowledge. The third eye area is also the place of the pineal gland, referred to in ancient knowledge as the "seat of the soul", so this practice could well increase connection and communication with one's 'higher self'. There is magic inherent in the menstrual cycle. Each cycle provides a woman with the opportunity to understand and read the messages her body gives her for any specific healing she needs. Each cycle creates the opportunity for as much

spiritual growth and personal development that she could want. All a woman has to do to connect with that potential is simply to be with what is, her cycle, happening over and over. The distressing symptoms that so commonly surround a woman's menstrual cycle in our day are often due to women simply not being connected with their cycle and ignoring their body's messages or symptoms, messages there to indicate specific emotional or physical needs or imbalances. Our menstrual symptoms are usually 'wake up calls' about the amount of toxins in our lives, whether that be in the food we eat, the company we keep or the stress levels we create from our lifestyle. The severity of symptoms we experience throughout our cycle will be a direct result of all the things that influence our state of health. What we eat, what we think and what we do with our body. Eating a good diet, and a regular yoga and meditation practice are the best things one can do to regulate our system and ensure it functions from a harmonious space rather than out of balance. OM TAT SAT The author conducts Yoga classes at HRBR, 2nd Block

Beginner’s class starts from 6th July. To register call: 99160 21472

Mandakallikere B V Prakash, an accomplished travel writer and mountaineer takes us to Mandakallikere, near Mysore Airport which is home to many migratory birds… such locale. As the name suggests it is quite close to the airport of Mysore hardly a few kilometres away towards Nanjangud. As one drives past the ring road, the vast lake on the right cannot be missed. Since travelers are too busy to reach their destinations not many take a look at the lake let alone stop for a view.

However, this lake is a favorite place for a variety of birds and if you watch patiently many beautiful birds can be spotted. In spite of the busy traffic on the road and the presence of farmers on the other side of the lake the birds have got used to the surroundings and get on with their business.

Our state boasts of a quite a few sanctuaries for birds…the famed ones, being Ranganthittu near Srirangapatna and Kokkare Bellur near Maddur. But during the season when migratory birds fly southwards for breeding they can actually be seen around most lakes and water bodies. Even small ponds that get life from the rains attract many birds!

The usual flocks of egrets, the white birds in green paddy fields and by the banks of lakes are quite common. For the discerning birdwatcher or a bird photographer with a keen eye for the winged beauties these little known lakes and tanks can be a heaven indeed. Mandakallikere, just besides the highway on the outskirts of Mysore is one

The most common birds seen are, of course, the pure white egrets or colorful kingfishers perching on a branch patiently to scoop down and grab a fish. The cormorants and coots play around in the water often dipping underwater for a catch. The darter or the snakebird, named so because of its snake like neck, is often seen sitting on a twig with widespread wings drying in the sun. There are a few large birds too. The pelicans with their large dagger like beaks and a voracious appetite hover around the lake in big 7

circles and land on the water like a plane. The most colorful birds visiting this lake are the painted storks!

The lake is not the only place for birding. The grove on the other side is rich with birdlife too. Noisy parakeets flit around trees while sunbirds, barbets and swifts can also be spotted. You can take a walk across the road to the western side and enjoy a good view of the lake and the birds. There are no facilities here. One has to find a shady place to sit and watch. Getting there: Driving beyond Mysore a few kms on Nanjangud Road before the Mandakalli airport the lake is seen on the right. As the road is narrow here, vehicles have to be parked a little further. Take food and water with you and of course, binoculars and camera!
