1897

LOOKING BACK AT ...

T

he Fir First st Congregational Congr ational Church C of Brookfield, oo in early May, ay 1897, shortly before it was completed on May 23 at a cost of $5,113. The church building, although covered over many years ago, is still at the northeast corner of Lincoln and Maple Avenues. The rutty dirt road to the left is Maple, and is bridged over by a quadruple plank-wide walkway; very useful for crossing muddy streets during rainy days. A blinding, sparking arc light over Maple would be later installed on Aug. 30, aiding the evening visits of not only churchgoers, but also the parents and children attending the S.E. Gross School directly across the street. In the distance can be seen a line of high, crooked poles that held up the power wires of the Suburban Electric Railroad (later West Towns) that would open for service on July 15, 1897.

T

he depressed floodplain that forms Swan Pond Park was a perfect place for a toboggan slide. It was a popular spot for group photographs, as well as winter sport. The Kinzie and Ripley families are shown enjoying a winter rendezvous at the slide in the late 19th century. In the middle of the 20th century a ski hill was erected in Swan Pond. In the 21st century Swan Pond still provides winter entertainment for Riverside families, but nothing as thrilling as the toboggan slide or ski jump. Today’s youth have fun sledding down a much shorter slope with no slide or jump.

Getting to know... CHRISTOPHER STACH Brookfield historian

How long have ave you yo lived in Brookfield? Brookf I have lived in Brookfield since my family f moved here on n January 18, 1958. As for working, I earned rned my first money by sselling gumballs from m a toy machine when I was w 6 years and 1 day old, on July 20, 19 1958. I was quite the entrepreneur, also selling ing KoolAid and small toys at a stand out front of my house.

Q&A

When I was around 10, I began collecting soda bottles left behind on playgrounds by other kids who didn’t care to take the time to return them for the 2 cents deposit on each. I took the bottles back to local stores, and on one summer day made as much as $1—this was at a time when Hershey chocolate bars cost 5 cents each. I felt rich! I worked at the Jewel Food Store at 9139 Broadway in Brookfield from January 6, 1969 to July 24, 1993. The store was closing (on July 31) and I was transferred to the Jewel in Westchester. What brought you here, and what has kept you here? My parents brought me here from our family home in Cicero, and did so without asking me if it was all right. After all, I was only 5 1/2 years old at the time! It was not too bad…we were moving into my Aunt Clara’s old house on Morton Avenue, and from prior visiting, I was already well familiar with the place. My favorite story about this is that if we had only stayed in Cicero, I would’ve ended up being a political henchman of some kind! What gets you fired up in the morning? A cup of tea or coffee, to begin with. I have discovered that for my metabolism, coffee relaxes me, and tea makes me alert and ready to do mental work. Sometimes I listen to recorded musis … my tastes are very eclectic … currently I am ranging between Mozart and Japanese pop music. What keeps you awake at night? I have never particularly wanted to be awake at night, but my mind sometimes wants me to think and think and think about certain things. It is then that I use several of my self-invented mind clearing methods to just stop thinking altogether,

WILLIAM CAMARGO/Staff photographer

and snap off into sleep. Of course, by not having anything caffeinated, yes, that helps me to sleep, too.

amaze myself by the great deal of vacant land that the village once had, up until the post-World War II era.

There is a certain feeling you get when viewing a really excellent sunrise in Brookfield, so when I get up early, I take a look outside to see how beautiful it will be. I have gotten pretty lucky at times!

As a result of my exhaustive local historical studies, when others see only what is happening in the village today, I know what has gone before, and I can compare and contrast the past and the present. When doing this, sometimes I can also predict what will happen in the future.

What do you love about Brookfield? Well, being Brookfield’s Greatest Historian (as people have called me), I can view places in Brookfield and know exactly how they looked, say, at any time back into the 1880s. Years ago, I found I could mentally “erase” certain “newer” houses of a particular time period on a block, paying attention to only the oldest, and I could

The trees and parks and the sense of space are what make the village attractive to me; they give it a sense of going back to its roots. And there are still parts of Brookfield that look the same before it was first subdivided by Village Founder S.E. Gross back in 1889.

Left of the building’s ground floor is a Realty Agency, and to the right are Feely’s News Store and Wicher’s Brookfield Bakery. Also located here are a pool room and a barber shop. Out front, Village Marshal Jim Curran (left) helps Emil Pick (right) do some landscaping to beautify that corner of Fairview and Grand Blvd. To the right of the front screen door is a thermometer, and up right of that are two signs. They indicate that upstairs are the offices of Dr. J.P. O’Neill, Md.—“Physician and Surgeon,” and Dr. T.A. Guest, possibly a dentist. Of especial note are the tall, whitepainted wooden planters that did not survive into the 1920s.

How long in Business: Over 53 years Why choose this area: I have lived and have been involved in this community for over 50 years. Greatest current business challenge: Keeping up with all the tax changes and Continuing Education Credits that are necessary for my multiple licenses, including my E.A. status. What do you love about your work: The people. I love the many people I have met. Your business philosophy: To treat clients the way I want to be treated. To treat them as I would treat an invited guest. Greatest accomplishments: Receiving the Woman of the Year Award, Cicero Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award, Multiple Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow Award, Western Springs Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Millenium Award, Five Who’s Who Awards, State of Illinois Woman of Distinction Award, Ronald Reagan Gold Award and two times elected Village Clerk of Brookfield. What have you learned: I have learned that many people pay taxes unnecessarily. With just a little bit of pre-tax season advice, we can cut their taxes by a lot.

How long in Business: Over 40 years Why choose this area: I wanted to do financial planning for people who really NEEDED financial planning. 40 years ago there were only financial planners for the rich. Greatest current business challenge: Helping my clients remember investing is for the long term and to stick with their goals rather than trying to give into the ups and downs of the market. What do you love about your work: The people. My clients become my friends. Your business philosophy: To invest my clients’ money as I would invest mine or my children’s. Greatest accomplishment: Being the first Waddell & Reed Representative to maintain 250 million of clients’ money under management & being inducted to Waddell & Reed’s Hall of Fame. What have you learned: I have learned that giving good finanical advice can help people turn their dreams into goals that can be reached.

iversside’s firs iverside’s first fire chief, Louis ou Thomas, m had to convince the village board to allow the department to use the village’s horse, “Old Frank,” to pull the fire wagon, instead of relying on human volunteers. The fire department pictured here is in front of the Malden Block (Bank Building) on Riverside Road. The Riverside Fire Department today relies on a paidon-call group of fire fighters but the equipment they now have available has a lot more “horse power.”

To the left is the wooden shelter erected around 1917, being the same time when the old pine plank wood platform was removed, and Purington Paver bricks were installed. (The wood platform was first laid in 1893 when Hollywood was founded.) This postcard photo dates from the early 1920s, and the station, itself, is only around three decades old. In the 1960s, entire art classes from the nearby Riverside-Brookfield High School were walked over to sketch the station as part of their studies in point perspective drawing.

Q&A

Getting to know... PETER BOUTSIKAKIS Co-owner Riverside Foods

How long have you lived/ worked in Riverside? I have a lot of memories growing up, and working at Riverside Foods. I remember making forts out of the paper towel boxes in the basement, and getting in trouble by my father, and being put in the meat cooler for a few minutes to learn my lesson. We used to have full hanging cattle then in our meat cooler, and it was terrifying. It wasn’t until 2010 that I began working full-time at the store, and started getting involved with the day-to-day ownership and management. At that time, I had just returned from living in Glasgow, Scotland were I successfully pursued a Masters Degree in Urban Design. My mother, Stephanie, was part-owner along with my uncle Jerry, and my mother was at a point in her life where she wanted to move on. In 2011, I purchased my mother’s ownership shares, and officially became part owner along with my uncle. What brought you here, and what has kept you here? What brought me here was opportunity and the community orientation of our store. I have always thought that independent, local neighborhood grocery stores serve an important role in the fabric of our communities. They can be a meeting place, a place to connect healthy foods and people, a building block of a localized economy, an important place to get away from the screens of our computers and cubicles, and interact with others locally and regularly. What has kept me here is the excitement of the job, and the culture of our community. Operating a brick and mortar

WILLIAM CAMARGO/Staff photographer

small business is extremely challenging, and having a family business often adds another layer of complexity. The joys of the position far exceed the difficulties. I get to work with introducing new products and services, and dialing it in to our customer’s shopping needs. I also have the excitement of interacting with so many people a day. Whether it be local vendors, customers, community partners, neighbors, etc...I’m always learning about people, and I always feel engaged. What gets you fired up in the morning? Cold Pressed Coffee and some epic tunes from Nina Simone or Danzig, if I have time, but usually just coffee.

What keeps you awake at night? Mostly different ideas, and working on social media. When I am at Riverside Foods, it’s hard to balance managing the floor along with all the extra social media and web work that is required to help keep us relevant. So I tend to do a lot of my computer-based work from home where there is peace of mind. I don’t have kids yet, so it’s still quite peaceful. All the little extras: email, newsletters, Facebook, keeping our online beer menu up to date, working on our next weekly advertisement, and keeping connected with our vendors—this help keeps Riverside Foods relevant

in our local economy. Relevancy is key to any thriving business. This, and Jacques Cousteau documentaries keep me up at night. What do you love about Riverside/Brookfield? Its uniqueness and accessible location to Chicago. It’s unique in that it is a suburban community, but is still rich in culture, history, and filled with people working on interesting things. Perhaps the mentality stems from the fact that we are an Olmsted designed town, and our connection both to nature and our major metropolitan area are so important to our vitality. I love that we have a small town feel, yet can still be so connected to what is going on around us.

Getting to know... TIM SNYDER

Q&A

Curator of birds for the Chicago Zoological Society, which operates Brookfield Zoo How long have you lived in Riverside? I moved to Riverside in April of 2008 What brought you here, and what has kept you here? I moved here after accepting a job with Brookfield Zoo. At first I chose to live in Riverside because it was convenient and I was able to walk to work every day. I’ve stayed here because I find the village inviting, all of the parks and green space create a pleasant environment and I’ve found the people to be friendly. Having the convenience of the train station for those times I want to venture into the city is also a big plus. What gets you fired up in the morning? I’m a morning person, it’s the best time of the day. I enjoy feeling the world wake up around me, preparing for the new and exciting things the day has to offer. This is especially true working for the Zoo. Every day is different and there’s always something new to be learned and experienced. What keeps you awake at night? Very little keeps me up at night. By the time evening rolls into night I’m gener-

ally out like a light, already thinking about tomorrow’s potential. Although it does concern me that as a nation we have become less able to embrace our differences. This is where much of our strength as a nation comes from. We would be a better place if everyone slowed down just a little and took the time to get to get to know our

neighbors, focusing on our similarities rather than our differences. What do you love about Riverside? I really enjoy the sense of community that Riverside offers. The neighbors and local business employees get to know you and make you feel welcome. This is something that many communities have lost.

Scholarship picnic fundraiser set for July 13

W

hen the all-too-short life of Brookfield resident Aaron Semenske ended on Nov. 26, 1996 at St. Louis University of unknown circumstances, his family chose to remember Aaron a manner that reflected his life, which had exhibited much promise in high school and as he continued his education. Aaron was a leader in the classroom and in athletics, and his parents, Ann and Doug, chose to establish a scholarship to be granted to a student — boy or girl — who most exhibited the qualities of their son. The renewable scholarship is awarded to a Riverside-Brookfield high School student who has submitted an application demonstrating academic achievement, involvement in community or religious efforts, leadership in the classroom and in athletics. Funds for the $2,000 annual scholarship are raised through the foundation’s annual picnic. Now in its 17th year, the Aaron Semenske Scholarship Foundation Annual Picnic will be held on Saturday, July 13 at Jaycee/Ehlert Park in Brookfield from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event features catered picnic fare, entertainment, a raffle and a silent auction. Special musical performances will be by Jeff Sandvig and Katie Redmond. The cost to attend the event is $30 for adults and $15 for children ages 4-10, with kids 3 and under free. To purchase picnic tickets or raffle tickets (winner need not be present) contact the Semenskes at 708-352-8574 or Dave Monti at 708-387-0859. Aaron Semenske is remembered by many of those who knew him, family, friends and teachers as an exemplary young man. In remembrance, they have compiled a memory book titled “Footprints on Our Hearts,” featuring 100 pages of Aaron’s writings, memories, and photos along with those written family and friends. The book is available for $12 with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund. Aaron Semenske’s life, while too short, has left a lasting effect on many of those he touched in life and those who he is touching now through his parents and friends and the Aaron Semenske Scholarship Foundation. To learn more about the Foundation visit the website at: http://www.angelfire.com/il2/semenskescholarship/ or by writing to the Aaron Semenske Scholarship Foundation, 3310 Park Ave., Brookfield, Ill. 60513.

pening in 1900 as the East School, this postcard photo shows little evidence of change as of this year, 1929. This is the original boulder-sided building, as constructed by Conrad Schneider, a local stone mason famous for his “castle homes” with crenelated rooflines. Brookfield has many of these, although he is known to have constructed them in surrounding villages as well. It is said that he initially dug up boulders and stones from the prairies and farmland in Congress Park. During times when Ogden Ave. was being dug up for sewer construction and repair, he found many boulders and flat stones. In the 1840s, these had been dumped up and down the avenue to enable traction for stagecoach and wagon travel during muddy weather (it didn’t work.) Here we see children out of school at the end of the day, very much aware that a photo is being taken. They are remaining behind to have their chance at immortality.

he Suburban Electric Railroad Company operated a trolley line from Chicago at Riverside’s northern border along 26th Street. It turned south on Desplaines Avenue and Woodside Road and then proceeded west along Park Place over the river to Brookfield Zoo, terminating at LaGrange. It was a ramshackle affair that creaked and rocked its way through the village for over 50 years before making its final run in 1948. Pictured here a group of passengers rides the trolley across the Des Plaines River to the zoo. The grass median on Woodside Road was once the rail right of way. rical Museum

T

aken on June 9, 1985, this photo, taken from the top step of the first Brookfield Library, looks northwesterly towards Lincoln and Grand Blvd. The library was demolished in late June to make way for the new one that would occupy the majority of this corner space. Directly ahead (and down seven steps to ground level) is the Brookfield Diamond Jubilee plaque showing the chairman and directors’ names. This is attached to a boulder in front of the Library Fountain, which had been erected in 1969 by using funds left over from the 1968 Jubilee. Unfortunately, the fountain only lasted until 1979, then being removed due to ongoing vandalism. The plaque and boulder now rests out front of the Brookfield Historical Society’s Grossdale Station. To the right is the Brookfield United Methodist Church (no longer existing), and to the left is the Seventh Day Adventist Church (now the Iglesia De Dios Torre Fuerte.)

R

iverside’s iconic water tower was sorely outdated by 2000 and in need of restoration. The city of Chicago mandated that suburbs maintain a one-million-gallon storage facility and discussions began among village officials as to the best way to meet the needs of the village after the decommissioning of the water tower. A joint solution with the neighboring village of N. Riverside was agreed upon. Riverside was awarded a grant for the restoration of the water tower in 2001 and in 2005 the tower underwent a comprehensive restoration. Depicted in this photograph is the tower while the work progressed.
