How long in Business: Over 53 years Why choose this area: I have lived and have been involved in this community for over 50 years. Greatest current business challenge: Keeping up with all the tax changes and Continuing Education Credits that are necessary for my multiple licenses, including my E.A. status. What do you love about your work: The people. I love the many people I have met. Your business philosophy: To treat clients the way I want to be treated. To treat them as I would treat an invited guest. Greatest accomplishments: Receiving the Woman of the Year Award, Cicero Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award, Multiple Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow Award, Western Springs Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Millenium Award, Five Who’s Who Awards, State of Illinois Woman of Distinction Award, Ronald Reagan Gold Award and two times elected Village Clerk of Brookfield. What have you learned: I have learned that many people pay taxes unnecessarily. With just a little bit of pre-tax season advice, we can cut their taxes by a lot.
How long in Business: Over 40 years Why choose this area: I wanted to do financial planning for people who really NEEDED financial planning. 40 years ago there were only financial planners for the rich. Greatest current business challenge: Helping my clients remember investing is for the long term and to stick with their goals rather than trying to give into the ups and downs of the market. What do you love about your work: The people. My clients become my friends. Your business philosophy: To invest my clients’ money as I would invest mine or my children’s. Greatest accomplishment: Being the first Waddell & Reed Representative to maintain 250 million of clients’ money under management & being inducted to Waddell & Reed’s Hall of Fame. What have you learned: I have learned that giving good finanical advice can help people turn their dreams into goals that can be reached.

GETTING GetTO KNOW...
Q & A
RIVERSIDE/BROOKFIELD
ABBY BRENNAN
Owner Brennan Massage & Spa
How long has your business been open in Brookfield? We opened on January 2, 2008. This year we are getting excited to celebrate our 10 year Anniversary January 2, 2018! What brought you here, and what has kept you here? The old house in which we occupy for the spa on Grand Blvd. is what brought me back to Brookfield. I grew up in Brookfield and Riverside and was not going to come back at all. But after a month of searching for a location to open the day spa in a different town, I drove through Brookfield as a last resort. I saw a broken for sale sign in the bushes in front of this great old house. I jumped out of my car and pulled the sign out of the bushes and called the realtor on the sign! The rest is history. What has kept me in Brookfield are our customers, loving the day spa and being devoted to my role in the business and business community. Even when business is hard, you don't ever give up. Every day, I try to complete tasks and strive for growth in the company. It seems to work, so we are staying in Brookfield for a long time! What gets you out of bed in the morning? Coffee!
WILLIAM CAMARGO/Staff photographer
What keeps you awake at night? My young daughters! Every night. All the time. #whenwillisleepagain? 5. What do you love about Brookfield? What I love about Brookfield is how down to earth, generous and good the people are. Many people have held on to old fashioned morals here. Simply knowing what’s right and what’s wrong. Everyone works so hard to support their families and neighbors. I love being a part of this community and being here for them when they need a relaxing spa treatment! Opening a business in Brookfield was a great decision.

LOOKING BACK
1895
AT
C
hicago real estate developer Samuel Eberly Gross first bought up property for what would later become central Brookfield in 1888. He would add more pieces to his “Grossdale” puzzle in 1899 and 1890, filling out map northwest and east of downtown. In 1894, Gross embarked on a major expansion of his fledgling development when he acquired the land bordered by the CB&Q Railroad, 47th Street, Raymond Avenue and Eberly Avenue. He dubbed the new subdivision West Grossdale, naming the streets after his ancestors and family members. West Grossdale had its own Victorian train depot and an Opera House.
Courtesy of the Brookfield Historical Society Collection
The subdivision was unveiled publicly on May 18, 1895 and as visitors arrived by train, they were greeted with the words “West Grossdale” spelled out in shells on the ground southwest of the depot, and a view of a few homes and the vast tracts of open land that comprised the area. Newly planted saplings lined the ambitiously named DuBois Bou-
levard, which led directly to the station. At the corner of Ogden and DuBois, visitors would be able to glimpse the Opera House, which burned down in 1904. After the village became known as “Brookfield” in 1905, the neighborhood assumed the name Congress Park, whose origins are not quite clear.

Q&A
Pastor, Compassion United Methodist Church Karl Sokol, pastor, Compassion United Methodist Church How long have you been with Compassion United Methodist Church? We started Compassion United Methodist Church in 2011. What brought you here and what has kept you here? I grew up in Brookfield and have always wanted to be a part of something beautiful and necessary for my town.
What gets you out of bed in the morning? When starting a church, every day brings new challenges and opportunities. The fact that this endeavor requires constant creativity gets me excited to start each day. What keeps you awake at night? We have a large vision for a community center at Eight Corners. Scout Real Estate Partners: A Boutique Real Estate Office in Your Neighborhood
A
ll real estate is local, and when it comes to buying a home in the western suburbs, that local knowledge, combined with cutting-edge modernity, is what sets Scout Real Estate Partners apart from the competition. Founded by Principal and Managing Broker Nick Fournier, the boutique firm specializes in making today’s clients at home in Riverside and the near west suburbs. Buyers and sellers who choose Scout benefit from choosing a 100% local firm with an agent who not only knows the local market but lives the local market. Fournier has lived in the western suburbs his entire life, and when the time came for him and his wife to buy a home of their own, they
chose her hometown of Riverside. He recognizes that many clients are looking for the same features he sought in a hometown. “The western suburbs really offer the best of everything. We are close to the city, but have our own great downtown, fantastic restaurants, wonderful schools and beautiful parks. We also are a great value. You get so much more for your money here than you can in the city or North Shore.” As the Managing Broker for Scout, Fournier can offer his clients the all the same high end marketing tools they would receive at a national firm, without the hierarchy that can come with working with the office of a national
firm. Instead of spending time on meetings, he is able to efficiently focus on providing service tailored to individual client’s needs, whether they are buying their forever home or looking for an investment property. For sellers, staying on top of marketing and offering services with a modern edge sets Scout apart from the rest. Fournier says that staying small means his office can offer personalized marketing plans for every property that are suited to the ways people look for homes today.

hicago and West Towns trolley No. 139 swings southwest onto Broadway Avenue from Monroe Avenue (you can make out the building that now houses Off Broadway Pub to the rear of the streetcar) during the last decade of the trolley service’s days on the rails through Brookfield. The suburban streetcar line made its first run in June 1897, ferrying passengers from the sprawling Western Electric Co. campus at Cermak Road and Cicero Avenue all the way to downtown LaGrange. After traveling west on Cermak Road, the trolley would head south on Harlem Avenue to 26th Street and then west to Desplaines Avenue, where it headed south again. At Park Place in Riverside, the trolley turned west and headed across the Des Plaines River and First Avenue right to the doorstep of Brookfield Zoo’s South Gate (at least after 1934). From there it continued west, crossed Salt Creek and then ran down the middle of Monroe Avenue before turning onto Broadway, thorough Eight Corners, and

then onto Lincoln Avenue. It traveled on Lincoln to the Indiana Harbor Belt tracks and then north to Hillgrove and into downtown LaGrange, terminating at Brainard Avenue. The trolley shut down in April 1948, replaced by buses.

n a beautiful winter’s day a double-horse team pulls a snowplow to clear a road in Riverside circa 1900. Horses were used to assist with snow removal as late as 1937. One can only wonder how many hours it took to clear the snow from the roads and sidewalks in those days. The Department of Public Works was responsible for snow removal from all of the sidewalks in Riverside until the early 1980s when that responsibility was moved to the individual homeowner, today. Only the sidewalks in the central business district are cleared by the village.

ack around 1890, when S.E. Gross laid out his new suburban development, known then as Grossdale, he lined Grand Boulevard with elm trees, all the way from 31st Street to Fairview Avenue. Over time the saplings grew tall … and taller – to the point where business owners in the 3700 block of Grand Boulevard had had enough. By August 1929, they wanted the trees out of there, pronto. The trouble was the village board had passed a law months earlier prohibiting removal of trees without the village’s consent. But business owners took matters into their own hands and on Aug. 4, 1929 hired a crew to saw down about a dozen trees in the downtown district. The local newspaper at the time noted that “together with the expressions of condemnation of the ‘ruthless slaughter’ were comments from those who believe that Brookfield has outgrown the era

of tree-fringed streets in the business districts.” The newspaper, apparently was one of those believing Brookfield had outgrown its trees, opining that they “should be removed altogether – by ordinance.” More of the trees were removed in 1947, leaving most of the south end of the 3700 block tree-less. In the 1960s, Dutch elm disease finished the job.

SPARC Chiropractic: Wellness in Your Neighborhood
SPARC
Chiropractic has been open in Brookfield for three years, and Dr. Mike Quintana and Dr. Tom Kinsella combine a traditional chiropractic practice with cutting edge services to provide a unique total wellness experience for their clients. Drs. Mike and Tom treat back pain, neck pain, headaches, muscle tightness and tension with their traditional chiropractic techniques. For those looking for relief from the pain of injury or accidents and those suffering from chronic pain conditions, chiropractic treatment can provide needed relief. Keen on dispelling a myth about chiropractic services, Dr. Mike remarks, “We’re not just about treating back pain. We try to go above and beyond simply being a place you go for a quick adjustment. Although we offer those services, we also look at the whole patient more holistically.” Dr. Tom stresses the importance of treating the whole patient, not just a symptom. “We’re good at getting patients on a treatment plan. Whether you’re dealing with acute pain, as in ‘I injured my back last night,’ or chronic pain, as in ‘I’ve had this pain for years,’ we are going to get to know the patient and assess the whole body to get a full picture.” As part of their whole-patient approach, the doctors at SPARC employ specialized techniques to address all aspects of patient wellness. Cold laser therapy works to reduce pain and inflammation and aid recovery. The treatment helps speed the process of tissue healing.

The test can identify shortfalls in diet or a need for supplements. SPARC also offers heavy metal testing and testing for food Dr. Mike Quintana Dr. Tom Kinsella sensitivities. New brain health assessments use a quick scan, blood sample and online testing to show how the brain is functioning. For those with a family history of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s the test can provide a useful baseline. As former student athletes, the doctors developed a life-long interest in remaining physical active and helping others to do the same. Drs. Mike and Tom received their doctorates in chiropractic medicine from National University of Health Services, and Dr. Mike also holds a masters in nutrition and functional medicine from the University of Western States. GETTING TO KNOW... GUS NOBLE
Q&A
President, Chicago Scots/Scottish Home How long have you been with the Chicago Scots/ Scottish Home? I’ve been President since 2004 but the organization has been around much, much longer. In fact we’re the oldest 501c3 charity in Illinois, having been established in 1845. We have two important purposes. As the Chicago Scots, we promote Scottish culture by organizing events and initiatives like our Scottish American Museum and our Scottish Festival and Highland Games. We also offer a range of outstanding elder care services at the Scottish Home and our new Caledonian House, a home for people living with dementias like Alzheimer’s Disease. What brought you here and what has kept you here? We first built the Scottish Home in 1910. Just 7 years later this home was destroyed completely by a fire. The Scottish Home residents were evacuated to safety and in many cases, taken in and looked after by neighbors in Riverside. We have never forgotten this extraordinary showing of kindness. And so we stand proudly and obligingly as a member of this community. We want to serve this community. We aim to be a special place for members of this special community to spend their last years. That’s why we’ve continually invested in improvements to our buildings and services, and that’s why generation after generation from this community turn to the Scottish Home when they need help. What gets you out of bed in the morning? I believe our society’s number one job is to take care of the people who take care of us. And the people who take care of us first are our parents, grandparents and elders. At the Scottish Home, we have given loving care, friendship and peace of mind to countless residents and their families for over 100 years. And yet, as demand
WILLIAM CAMARGO/Staff photographer
for elder care changes, we strive to offer something that chimes with the times. We have responded practically to the challenge of Alzheimer’s and dementia by building the Caledonian House, a haven of expert care where residents feel valued, loved and purposeful. I get out of bed and come to work because I want to be part of something that will raise the bar in elder and memory care. What keeps you awake at night? Yes, dollars and cents are important, but our real bottom line is measured in how well the wife or husband, son or daughter, family or friend of a resident sleeps at night. If I look into his or her eyes and can see that he or she is being kept awake by stress or worry, then I know something needs to be done. If they can’t sleep, I can’t sleep. But if see
that they’ve been able to put their head on their pillow and sleep well at night, then I know that they are happy with the care their loved one is receiving at the Scottish Home. What do you love about North Riverside? The Scottish Home is a place where friends become family. Our philosophy of one-on-one care is inspired by the comfort of home and the warmth of family. These 2 values – family and home – inform everything we have ever done and will ever do. These are the beacons that light our way. I recognize that these values also inform the community and character of Riverside. So, it feels comfortable and correct to be here. The Scottish Home is incredibly proud to be part of this community.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago, our mission is simple: deliver world-class care to children who need it most – regardless of their ability to pay. For over 90 years, thousands of families with children affected by orthopaedic conditions, cleft lip and palate, spinal cord injury, and rehabilitation needs have come through our doors with hopes of finding the very best pediatric specialty care. Under our roof, those hopes are answered every day — by physicians, nurses, and specialists using the latest technology, innovative research, and a collaborative, family-centered approach. It’s how the 22 Shriners Hospital locations provided care to over 127,000 children last year alone.

LOOKING BACK TO
1890’S
THE
L
ong before Frederick Law Olmsted visited Riverside in 1868, the creek around the perimeter of what we call Swan Pond Park formed an island identified on Olmsted’s 1869 General Plan of Riverside as “Picnic Island.” The log across the creek — this photo is from the 1890’s — was known as the Natural Bridge, but was removed in the early 1900s for safety reasons. The creek was gradually filled in with dirt and ash when residents began to view the creek as a hazard. The persons most annoyed by the removal of the creek were fishermen who had used it as a favorite fishing spot.

LOOKING BACK AT
A
1893
lexander Watson was the owner of a large part of the unincorporated area known as Riverside Lawn just south of the bend in the Des Plaines River across from Riverside. He built this bridge — known as Watson’s Bridge — across the river to Riverside in 1893 after winning a lawsuit with the village for the right to do so. Watson’s aim was to promote the area for development. In 2015 the area was deemed uninhabitable by Cook County because of the recurring incidences of extreme flooding. The county has purchased many of the dwellings in the Lawn, including Watson’s house and in 2017 will raze them and return the area to forest preserve.

GETTING TO KNOW... CAROL SPALE North Riverside Neighborhood Services Coordinator
Q & A
WILLIAM CAMARGO/Staff
Carol and Frank Spale with their son, David, at their home in North Riverside on January 19, 2017. How long have you been with the North Riverside Neighborhood Services? It’s been 24 years. Ever since we had the opportunity to give back to the community who helped us out. It started with a potluck that we hosted for the many people who helped out family, and then our former mayor asked us if we wanted to be involved with the organization. What brought you here, and what has kept you here? We had people from the village who helped us with our son David, who is now 37. David can’t walk or talk. People in the village treated us like family because of David.
We wrote former Mayor Scheck letting him know that people had helped us. Two years later, I started working with the organization, North Riverside Neighborhood Services. Today, we have more than 90 block captains, 1 for each block, to help people who might feel lonely or need a connection to the community. What gets you out of bed in the morning? David gets us out of bed, and the fact that we want to help people in trouble. I can call any of the block captains and have them drive someone, or move something or whatever someone may need. I have the privilege of
helping people. What keeps you awake at night? The same thing that gets me out of bed in the morning. I also email the block captains at night after I get David to bed and get my husband fed. I like to check in with the block captains about what we need, and a lot of this happens late at night. What do you love about North Riverside? I love the fact that it’s a small community with a big heart. I love the big heart that stretches around the village. We’ve established a network of caring around town. Neighbors become like family.

f you visit Riverside and see its beautiful train station you would never guess what happened to it in August of 1911. An eastbound passenger train was preparing for its p.m. run when an eastbound freight train missed a semaphore signal and smashed into the rear passenger car of the departing train. Luckily, there were no fatalities, but the devastation to the station was considerable. The passenger car was thrown from the tracks and knocked out the pillar supporting the roof of the station, causing the roof to collapse. The restoration of the station was

iverside’s antiquated sewer system (state of the art in 1871) was becoming problematic by the 1940s. The workers shown here in 1948 were installing new sewer lines in the central business district. In the 21st century Riverside still has some sewer problems, so repair crews can still be spotted and the village is planning to major sewer improvements to reduce basement flooding.

Q&A
GETTING TO KNOW... AMY L. WEINERT
Treasurer Brookfield Chamber of Commerce and Assistant Vice President First National Bank of Brookfield
How long have you been with First National Bank of Brookfield and the Brookfield Chamber? I have been working for First National Bank of Brookfield for 26 plus years. I have been active with Brookfield Chamber of Commerce for 10 years, becoming the Treasurer in 2008. What brought you here and what has kept you here? I was born and raised in Brookfield where I attended S. E. Gross School and graduated from Riverside-Brookfield High School in 1984. I started working for FNBB in 1990. Once I started a family I knew that Brookfield was where I wanted to raise my children; they have had some of the same teachers that I had growing up! What gets you out of bed in the morning? I think that the thing that gets me out of bed in the morning are the laughs that I get to have all day long. I am very much a people person, and I love to be with others and get to know them. I am very fortunate that in my job I get to work with people and understand their financial needs. I am a Consumer Loan Officer, so I get to help make dreams come true. Whether you are buying a new house, making improvements to your home or buying a new car – I am working with customers to figure out what is best for them and their situation. What keeps you awake at night? The financial crisis of 2008 was a very difficult time for

the Bank along with so many other companies and individuals. The Bank was only able to survive because of the support of our customers in and around Brookfield and the strong relationship we’ve formed with those customers since the Bank opened in 1962. I still lose sleep thinking about the mistakes that were made leading up to and

during the financial crisis and I hope we’ve all learned from those mistakes so we can avoid anything like that again in the future. What do you love about Brookfield? I have been extremely fortunate to develop wonderful friendships in the community. The families that I have met through my children growing
up and their friendships have been a blessing in so many ways. The neighbors that I cherish and the sense of community throughout this town is amazing. Working for the community bank has allowed me to participate in activities and events that support the town. Being active in the Chamber is a way that I am able to give back to the community.
