CPS sells Key to private school
The shuttered school went for $175K to The Field School By ANALISA TROFIMUK AustinTalks
Some local residents are complaining that CPS kept them out of the loop about the recent sale of former Francis Scott Key Elementary to a private, Christian school. It has been vacant since CPS shuttered it and three other Austin schools in 2013. The Chicago Board of Education approved the $175,000 sale Jan. 24th to The Field School, now operating at 931 Lake St. in Oak Park. The Field School plans to use the space at 517 N. Parkside as a K-8 school to educate about 300 diverse students, school head Jeremy Mann said. Dwayne Truss, a longtime Austin resident and community organizer, was upset to learn about the sale of the building, saying decisions about which schools West Side children attend should involve engagement from active members of community groups. “What’s so hard about having a conversation?” Truss asked. The lack of communication between CPS and residents about the sale left See KEY SOLD on page 5

A one-man movement to help the homeless John Netherly aims to help those who prefer to live on the streets
By TOM HOLMES Contributing Reporter
They found Miss Bernice dead in a doorway. Forest Park resident John Netherly said he knew that would happen. He had been pleading with police for months to take Miss Bernice to a hospital or mental health facility, telling officers the woman was not mentally capable of making decisions in her best interest. “There’s nothing we can do,” Netherly
heard in return. The homeless woman then passed alone of a drug overdose on Jan. 24, after refusing Netherly’s offer to connect her with a social service, temporary housing, mental health or other agency. Netherly is the founder of the Bedrock Movement, a nonprofit that serves those like Miss Bernice who choose to sleep on the street instead of in a shelter. A 2016 survey by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development found that, of the 952 people researchers counted as being homeless in
the Chicago suburbs in 2016, 110 were unsheltered. In the city, 1,243 of the 5,889 were sleeping outside. The Northern Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross has recently recognized Netherly’s work with the homeless, and nominated him to receive a community service award at its annual Heroes Breakfast in May. Netherly has spent his life serving the homeless and mentally ill. His father, who

Developer chosen for former Sears site
Tucker Development to lead redevelopment of commercial corner By TIMOTHY INKLEBARGER Staff Reporter
The shuttered Sears department store at the corner of Harlem and North avenues could be headed toward redevelopment with the selection of a lead developer for the site. Judith Alexander, chair of the community group The North Avenue District (T-NAD), reports in her monthly North Avenue newsletter that Highland Park-based Tucker Development Corp. has been chosen as the local developer by Seritage Growth Properties, a real estate investment trust for Sears and Kmart properties. Alexander confirmed in a telephone interview that Chicago Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) has said publicly that Tucker will lead the project. Taliaferro, who could not immediately be reached for comment, is expected to discuss the topic further at a public meeting at Rutherford Sayre Park field house,
6871 W. Belden Ave., on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. Representatives from Tucker also could not immediately be reached for comment. Tucker has developed retail shopping centers and other properties in Chicago, Highland Park, Wheaton, and Lincolnwood, among others. Alexander believes the development company’s work on Marketplace at Six Corners, an 11-acre site at the intersection of Cicero Avenue, Irving Park Road and Milwaukee Avenue, could have helped get them named for the project. Marketplace, which was developed in the mid-90s, included a renovated Sears department store. That development used tax increment district funding on the project that also included a Jewel-Osco grocery store and Marshalls department store, according to Tucker’s website. It’s been four years since redevelopment of the Sears property was seriously considered. Sears was in negotiations in 2014 to locate a Mariano’s grocery store at the site, with Continental Properties as the lead developer. That plan also included demolishing the existing Sears and rebuilding a smaller Sears store and locating one or two restaurants along the North Avenue. That plan was declared dead in 2015, the same year the property was sold to Seritage,

In 2017, Seritage put the 3-story property up for partial lease, making only 131,359 square feet of the 356,744-square-foot building available. A few month later, Sears announced it was closing the location. Alexander said no details have been
shared concerning what might replace the Sears, but added that T-NAD supports more residential development in the district. “There is more office and retail space than there is demand for, so residential development is obviously part of the answer,” she said.
Providence St. Mel’s founder opens up on life mission Paul Joseph Adams III was recently honored by the Leaders Network
By WENDELL HUTSON Contributing Reporter
The Garfield Park neighborhood is home not only to Providence St. Mel School but also to its founder, Paul Joseph Adams III, a community activist fighting to improve opportunities for youth on the West Side. The nonprofit Leaders Network recently honored Adams for his lifetime work at Providence St. Mel and his community contributions. “It was an enormously high honor for me to stand with the board of directors of the Leaders Network and present Mr. Paul Adams III with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Education Award,” said Rev. Ira Acre, pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church in North Lawndale and co-chairman for the Leaders Network, on a Facebook post. “Mr. Adams is a living legend and precious jewel serving on the West Side.” But with all the accolades Adams often receives, both locally and nationally, the 77-year-old husband and father said all he wants to do is increase educational opportunities for youths, especially black youths. “We have the power in this community to make changes in our lives, but for some reason we [blacks] get ‘comfortable’ with our situation and are reluctant to make
changes,” said Adams, executive chairman of Providence St. Mel. “But from my point of view a quality education changes all of that.” One obstacle Adams said he runs into when recruiting students to Providence St. Mel are parents opting to send their children to charter schools. “Our competition is charter schools. Parents have told me they cannot afford a private school and prefer to send their students to public schools,” explained Adams. “I understand a lot of parents are struggling financially but it is so important that we preserve our future and that starts with educating the next generation of leaders.” Providence St. Mel, 119 S. Central Park Ave., is an independent, private school with a current enrollment of 400 students, and serves grades kindergarten through 12th. The former Catholic school offers college preparatory classes, sports, clubs, and different programs including a summer international program. The Archdiocese of Chicago previously operated Providence St. Mel, which was created in 1969 with the merger of Providence High School and St. Mel High School. In 1978, the Archdiocese announced it was closing the school during Adams’ tenure as principal. However, Adams refused to let the doors close and spearheaded a community cam-

His effort was made possible after the Archdiocese donated the school’s campus to Adams. And during the 1980s, Providence St. Mel expanded to include elementary grades. Annual tuition at Providence St. Mel is $8,000, but Jeanette Butala, president of the school, said the average family receives financial aid from the school and pays only $200 per month. But tuition payments do not make up it’s nearly $8 million a year budget.
“Only 15 percent of students pay the full tuition, which accounts for $1.8 million a year. The rest of the budget is made up with fundraising and private donations,” said Adams, who added the school’s capacity could hold 800 students. “My mother made sacrifices so I could attend a private school and I encourage all parents to do the same.” Adams said that there students who attend the school who live as far away as suburban Naperville. “There are students who live in Schaumburg, on the South Side and other far places that attend our school,” added Adams, who lives across the street from the school. “Providence St. Mel is a school whose students are predominately black and 88 percent of its teaching staff have advanced degrees.” According to Adams, the school has had a 100 percent college acceptance rate since 1978, and 74 percent of its students graduate from college in four years opposed to the national average of 51 percent. “Our students attend some of the best colleges and universities in the country like Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern, and Howard University,” contends Adams, the oldest of four siblings. “Any student who graduates from here will be ready to succeed in life after college. We prepare our students to be leaders, thinkers and game-changers.” CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

Bill Hampton laid to rest
During local leader’s Feb. 15 funeral, mourners urged public to remember By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
Several hundred people filled the sanctuary of a Maywood church on Feb. 16, to pay their respects to William Edward Hampton — the brother of the slain Black Panther leader Fred Hampton and a Maywood Park District commissioner. Hampton, most widely known as Bill, died on Feb. 8 after undergoing an unspecified surgical procedure. He was 72 years old. Many of those who spoke during the service remembered Hampton’s revered historical memory and his efforts to perpetuate his brother’s memory. “I knew Bill for almost 50 years and his work was to keep Fred’s memory and that history alive,” said Flint Taylor, the Hampton family’s longtime attorney. “He brought that history into the present. He taught that history. He was a brilliant historian.” As a testament to Bill’s success, Taylor said that he had been in court during the Friday service and needed to ask the judge for a recess. The case was related to former Chicago police commander Jon Burge’s notorious torture operation that took place in the 1970s and 1980s. “[When I told him I needed a recess to come to Bill’s funeral], the judge sent his respects,” Taylor said. There were those among the speakers who were actors in the historical drama that played out in the wake of Fred Hampton’s 1969 assassination at the hands of Chicago police, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office and the FBI. Fred Hampton, Jr., 48, was in his mother’s womb as she slept next to Fred in their West Side apartment and was nearly killed herself as officers riddled the civil rights leader’s body during an early morning raid. The son of the Illinois Black Panther Party chairman, who is himself the chairman of the Black Panther Party Cubs, said that the government seemed to have predicted the kind of leader his father would become.
MICHAEL ROMAIN/Staff
REST IN POWER: Mourners fill a church in Maywood during the Feb. 16 funeral service for Bill Hampton, the brother of slain Black Panther leader Fred Hampton. “The FBI placed a tap on my grandma’s phone when Fred was 14 years old,” he said. Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th) said that, while he never knew Fred personally, the beginnings of a decades-long bond with Bill, their sister, Frances, and their mother, Iberia, formed the night after the Black Panther leader’s death. Davis said that as he sat with the Hamptons inside of a noted Chicago funeral home known for burying slain revolutionaries, the fear drummed up after Fred’s death had not abated. “We were scared, we weren’t sure if the police were going to come in,” he said. “Right there on Roosevelt Road.” Rev. Albert Sampson — the influential clergyman, activist and organizer who worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and was an assistant to Rev. Ralph Abernathy — recalled the genesis of the Fred Hampton Scholarship Fund, which Bill had organized and administered since 1971. “In my discussions with the Hampton family, I found out that Fred wanted to be a lawyer,” Sampson said, adding that those
conversations prompted Abernathy to commit $1,000 to a nascent foundation for young people with the same ambitions. Under Bill’s guidance, roughly 200 scholarships had been given out since then. Quincy Johnson, a close friend of Bill’s, lauded the Hampton family’s efforts, led by Bill, to burnish Fred’s memory — from keeping up the scholarship fund to mounting a campaign to pressure Maywood officials to name a Maywood swimming pool (and the street where it’s located) after Fred. Those efforts, Johnson recalled, were not frictionless. “The U.S. government put all of their resources into destroying that history,” Johnson said. Sampson recalled local efforts to raze any memory of Fred’s assassination or the political threat that Fred and the Panthers, and even King, presented that undergirded it. Sampson said that the city tore down the Chicago apartment building where King stayed while living on the West Side during his struggle for open housing. And “they tore down Fred Hampton’s
house so there would be no vestige of history there,” Sampson said. Davis, illustrating what the process of forgetting looks like on the national level, said that the Panthers were an inspiration for the country’s School Breakfast Program and they fought for sickle cell screening. “[The Panthers were influences on] the nutrition program that [President Donald] Trump is talking about cutting,” Davis said, referencing Trump’s proposal to cut a significant portion of the funding for the food stamp program and introduce boxed food. Martha Allen, one of Bill’s relatives, said that she would sometimes travel down streets with Bill as he exhibited a tour guide’s recollection of historical events and people that once happened in those spaces. “We’ve got to teach our young people their history,” Allen said. Others who spoke praised Bill for his quiet perseverance even as he dealt with health struggles that he often kept to himself. Bishop Claude Porter, who delivered the eulogy, said that he’d seen Bill not long before his death. The park district commissioner was handing out food, Porter said. Last year, Bill helped cut the ribbon on the park district’s renovated grounds on the corner of 9th Ave. and Madison St. Rory Kennedy — the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy and the sister of Illinois Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris Kennedy — was Bill’s guest of honor. “Bill gave us a history and catapulted us forward,” said Arnettra Burnside, a park district commissioner. “He had a very strong will.” Sy Bounds, a friend of Bill’s, said that he would like to see Bill’s legacy perpetuated — just as he perpetuated Fred’s. Bounds said that he would like to see the park district renamed after the Hampton family, perhaps the apartment where the family lived made into a learning museum, among other ideas. “Let’s make this history thing happen,” Bounds said. ne of the hardest things to do is to learn of someone’s death and it is too late to adjust your schedule so that you can attend the service. That is what happened to me last week. I got home a little after 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, and learned of the death of William “Bill” Hampton. The wake had been held that evening and the funeral was scheduled to take place the next day. My heart sank at learning that news. I then began a search to learn that Bill, 72, had been in a nursing home recovering from an undisclosed surgery. His passing on Feb. 8 will leave a major void in the black activist community. I don’t know when or where I first met Bill, but whenever his distinctive handwriting came in the mail, I knew immediately that it would be an invitation to an event that I would want to attend. Bill would also call me with his invites. So to learn of his passing too late to make arrangements to pay my last respects was hurtful. I want to use this bully pulpit platform that I have to speak on Bill. He was one of the best and one of the last of the true black revolutionaries from the 1960s who fought for black people without selling us out. He carried on his allegiance to his late brother, Illinois Black Panther Party
Chairman Fred Hampton. While Fred was a natural born orator, Bill did what he did with dedication. Even though the crowds were small at his annual Fred Hampton Scholarship Fund Image Award event, he trudged on with unfailing perseverance. I attended several of the award ceremonies in the past and am proud to have been an awardee in 2011. Not only did I have the opportunity to get to know and admire Bill, I got to meet his and Fred’s mother, Iberia Hampton. I was in awe to be in the presence of a woman whose son was for many of us, the icon that defined the black power movement in Chicago. Mrs. Hampton passed away in October, 2016 at the age of 94. Bill Hampton served as a commissioner for the park district in Maywood. He understood intrinsically the importance that recreational facilities play in the continuing development of a community. As many of the legends of the Civil Rights and Black Panther eras pass on, it will be the young ones who should be stepping forward to take over the reins. I don’t know who will fill Bill’s shoes, but to our young people I ask that someone step up to that plate. Rest in Peace Bill Hampton. You did well while you were here! In total, more than 7,000 paid apprenticeship and internship opportunities will be available to high school teens this spring through After School Matters. Participating teens will be eligible to earn a stipend of up to $425 (depending on the program level), and interns can earn up to $10.50 per hour. “After School Matters is committed to providing teens with inspiring and engaging opportunities to explore their interests,” said Mary Ellen Caron, chief executive officer of After School Matters. “Through our programs, teens are able to further develop their passions and expand their skill sets, which we know will help them succeed in college, careers and beyond.” After School Matters’ unique programs offer teens an opportunity to develop their current skills while incorporating critical 21st century skills like collaboration, problem solving, social awareness and more.

train to become umpires and coaches by learning the rules of baseball and softball, and developing their leadership and communication skills. Participants will practice what they learn with Little League programs. Learn to Swim at Austin College and Career Academy High School: Teens have the opportunity to train to become lifeguards. Participants learn aquatic rescues, CPR, and other life-saving skills. At the conclusion of the program, teens may apply for lifeguard certification for future employment opportunities. STARS (Strong Teens Acting Real on Stage) at Michele Clark High School: S.T.A.R.S. is an actor’s boot camp for young actors who want to work hard, be challenged and learn the art of acting. Students build on acting foundations, experiment creating bold characters with improvisation, and learn the best way to approach film, television and commercial scripts. The Berklee Initiative at Chicago West Community Music Center: Berklee City Music engages teens in a music education program designed to prepare them to pursue higher education and reduce specific music-related achievement gaps. The cutting-edge curriculum is centered around present-day music styles that teach theoretical, listening, improvisational and performance skills. Teens who play musical instruments should bring them to the program. Teens must be at least 14 years to apply (16 years old for internships) and be attending high school. As part of the application process, teens interview with program instructors. For more information, call (312) 742-4182 or email applications@afterschoolmatters.org CONTACT: austintalks.org@gmail.com

‘HELLO, MY NAME IS JOHN’: John Netherly said he establishes trust with those experiencing homelessness by listening to their stories.
JOHN NETHERLY Helping
from page 1 balled as a Harlem Globetrotter before working at the post office for 40 years, and mother would often cook meals and hand them out in front of shelters. Netherly went on to study ways to give back, earning a master’s degree in social work from Dominican University, a master’s in urban ministry from Moody Theological Seminary and a master’s in business management at National Louis University. At seminary school, Netherly learned that homeless ministry is underserved. And, that those who serve this population, are often overworked. He decided he would focus his energy on the disadvantaged and has worked with the mentally ill for 15 years, and is presently employed by Presence Behavioral Health as a behavioral health technician. Since Netherly is unmarried and works
the night shift at Presence, he spends six days a week travelling to the West and South Sides of Chicago and tending to the needs of the homeless. This experience gave credence to his suspicion that most, if not all, of the people who choose to live on the street do so because they are mentally ill. He said he has established trust with many of the people he meets on the streets because the most important thing he does is to listen to their stories. “When I see a person on a bench or in a park who I suspect from my years of experience is homeless, I go up to them and say, ‘Hello, my name is John, and I’m a social worker. Please tell me your story,” he said. Netherly listens and then asks them what they need. It might be a cup of coffee or a bus pass. He has given out tents and sleeping bags. Sometimes he’ll rent a room at a cheap motel and make appointments for homeless to shower while he cleans their clothes at a nearby laundromat. He swears by the Australia-based Backpack Bed for the Homeless, a company that makes sleeping bags that keep people warm in zero degree weather.
Netherly kept it hidden from his family and friends for about 10 years that he served the homeless. I “didn’t feel it was a big deal or that no one really cared,” he wrote on his website. It took his friend Pastor Rickey Kendrick to tell him how important his work really was. In 2014, Netherly founded the Bedrock Movement, which “exists to help the homeless [and] mentally ill, receive dignity, safety, and empowerment for a high-quality of life on a daily basis,” according to its mission statement. Unlike Housing Forward, a Maywood nonprofit that aims to provide vulnerable with housing and job support and has a full-time staff of 40 and $4.5 million annual budget, Netherly is the director of Bedrock and its only worker all rolled into one. His expenditures average around $700 a month and come out of his own wallet. Those who want to donate comforters, tents, bed bug spray and more can reach out to the Bedrock Movement on Facebook. Budget and personnel constraints have forced Netherly’s help to be simple and cost effective. For example, a challenge for people
on the street is staying dry as well as warm. His solution is to buy heavy duty garbage bags, cut holes in them for heads and arms and give them to the people he serves to wear like ponchos. Netherly said his work has pulled him emotionally and spiritually in two different directions. On the one hand, he wants to respect the homeless and care for them where they are, but he also knows that people like Miss Bernice are not capable of making decisions in their own best interest. After her passing, Netherly approached state Rep. LaShawn Ford to ask him to introduce “They Refuse Help,” a bill which would not only authorize, but compel police officers to take people on the street who are clearly not able to make decisions on their own behalf to a hospital or mental facility. Netherly also advocates for Chicago to follow the lead of Arizona, and install a tent city, or area that is legally designated for the homeless and mentally ill to sleep. He believes the city should offer homeless counseling, a 24hour bathroom, area to wash clothes, medical services and food and water.

W. Side restaurant shines during Black Restaurant Week LiFE, in W. Garfield Park, is first West Side business to participate in Week By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter
For the past three years, Chicago Black Restaurant Week has spotlighted African-American-owned eateries throughout the city and its suburbs. But this year marked the first time a West Side business took part in the event, held Feb. 11 through Feb. 17, and the participant was a relative newcomer — LiFE restaurant, which has been open in West Garfield Park, at 3858 W. Madison St., for less than a year. Owner Joe Black said that participating in the event increased his customer base. Black founded LiFe Restaurant to provide more healthy choices in the community. In the months since, the response has been even more positive than he had hoped. As the first anniversary approaches, Black is looking to add sit-down dining and offer free poetry open mics and musical programming to allow local people more opportunities to showcase their talents. Chicago Black Restaurant Week was founded by Chicago PR professional Lauran Smith. By that point, Choose Chicago, the City of Chicago’s official marketing organization, had already been doing Chicago Restaurant Week for eight years. The event was designed to bring attention to restaurants throughout the city, with participants offering special deals. Smith wanted to do something that focused on black-

During a recent interview, she said that she hopes to spotlight “hidden gems” throughout the city and to help the communities where those gems are located.
“Our main goal is to rebuild and restore our communities, and CBRW is one small step in that direction,” Smith said. The business week is open to all black-owned restaurants located in the city and the suburbs, although Smith emphasized that this doesn’t include Indiana cities near the Chicago border. The applicants must fill out an application and Smith’s organization checks to make sure the applicant really is black-owned. “We have not only been able to successfully bring about more visibility to black owned food and beverage businesses, but we have also been told of an increase in revenue to those businesses, as well as the need to hire additional employees,” she said. Black said that his friends told him about the business week event and encouraged him to apply. All participants are encouraged to offer specials, and LiFE’s discounted offerings included a shrimp Po Boy sandwich with drips and a drink for $9.18 and a Santa Fe salad with chicken for $8.18, among others. Black said that, as of Feb. 15, the event brought in decent crowds. He was especially pleased to see how many people came from outside West Garfield Park. “It has been bringing in lots of people, and a lot of people said we didn’t know we were there,” Black said. “We got people coming in from the South Side, from 100th street [and further south], which doesn’t usually happen, because, you know, South Side people don’t usually come to the West Side and West Side people don’t usually come to the South Side,” he added. “It’s a good thing, everybody coming together, participating in life and food and all the good things.” CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com
