Johnson upsets Boykin in 1st District race The Chicago teacher ran to the left of the incumbent By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
Brandon Johnson, the Chicago Public Schools teacher and Chicago Teachers Union organizer, entered the Democratic Primary race to replace incumbent 1st District Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin as a serious underdog. By Monday, however, Boykin — a firstterm elected official who seemed to have the visibility and political prowess of a veteran, and the backing of suburban mayors, high-profile leaders like businessman Willie Wilson, and Congressman Danny K. Davis — had conceded. By the time the polls closed on March 20, Johnson was up on Boykin by fewer than 400 votes, with no more than a dozen precincts still to be reported. Those outstanding votes left Boykin with an opening to stave off a concession call until provisional ballots had been counted. Since last Tuesday’s election, however, Johnson’s lead had gradually opened up to 436, with all precincts in the city and suburbs reported, according to online election data from the Cook County Clerk’s office and the Chicago Board of Elections. Taliaferro launches volunteer program The 29th Ward alderman is seeking volunteers for block representative
By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter
Alderman Chris Taliaferro (29th) is launching a new community volunteer initiative to get the word out about goings on in his ward. Anyone who lives in the 29th Ward can volunteer to be a block representative. As Taliaferro and his staff explained, the
representatives will get information about ward programs and upcoming events, and it would be their job to spread the word. They would also serve as another way residents can get in touch with the ward office and local police districts. The idea, Taliaferro said, was to get as much information out to residents as possible. The alderman held the informational
meeting about the program on March 15 in his ward office at 6272 W. North Ave. It wound up standing room only, with at least 54 people attending — a fact that Taliaferro believes bodes well for the program’s future. During his March 7 ward community meeting, which was held at Columbia Park

Orr players, excelling on court and on screen, use basketball as key Orr Academy, located between West Garfield Park and Humboldt Park, has been seemingly ubiquitous recently. In February, “Shot in the Dark,” a documentary film about the high school’s basketball team, produced by Chance the Rapper and Dwayne Wade, debuted on Fox — right as the gun control debate was heating up. Then, Orr beat Winnebago 76-49 to take the Class 2A state championship on March 10 in Peoria — the second consecutive championship for the West Side school. And more recently, on March 24, the Triton College men’s basketball program captured their national championship against Pima College in Arizona. Isaiah Hayes, a guard on that historic team, is an Orr graduate. In this second edition of ‘Street Wise,’ former Orr star player Tyquone Greer’s words in “Shot in the Dark’s” closing moments are echoed by Chicago Magazine in its February issue. Greer, who accepted a basketball scholar-
ship from Daytona State before transferring to Hofstra and Ferris State, “walks along a beach in Daytona, reflecting on his life.” “‘I like playing basketball,’ he says, then starts to add that he doesn’t love it. But he stops himself. ‘I love it because it’s going to give me a free education. I know what basketball can do for me and my family, so I do it.’”

Davis sails to primary win
The congressman garnered nearly 76 percent of the vote against Clark By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
Congressman Danny K. Davis (7th) easily prevailed over challenger Anthony Clark in the March 20 Democratic primary election. As of March 25, Davis was up 76 percent to 26 percent, with 98 percent of precincts in the city and suburbs reporting. Clark, however, fared much better in the suburbs, garnering around 40 percent of the vote, according to the Cook County Clerk’s Office. Davis won roughly 80 percent of the vote in the city. On the West Side, in the 24th, 28th, 29th and 37th Wards, Davis garnered 89 percent, 84 percent, 83 percent and 87 percent, respectively. At his election night headquarters at Avenue Ale House in Oak Park, Clark — an Oak Park resident, founder of the nonprofit Suburban Unity Alliance and an Oak Park and River Forest High School teacher — said that
the night was just a prelude for what’s to come. “No question about it,” Clark said, when asked if he plans on running for Congress in the next election. “You don’t run once,” Clark said. “You run, build a foundation, see where you are, learn from your mistakes and triumphs and move forward. I truly believe that in next election cycle we’re going to obtain what we want.” The first-time political candidate had framed himself as a new, progressive alternative after being recruited and vetted by leftleaning political organizations Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats last May. Clark attributed his loss to a low turnout among younger voters and to Davis’ greater name recognition. Nonetheless, he said, the campaign was a win-win for what he called a political movement. “Elections come and go but movements remain, so no matter what, this was a victory for us,” Clark said. “The incumbents are shaken up now.” At the Carleton of Oak Park, where supporters of Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin gathered anxiously during the night, Davis appeared nonplussed, as if returning home from a typical day’s work.

SMOOTH SAILING: Congressman Danny K. Davis easily defeated challenger Anthony Clark in the Democratic Primary race for the 7th District Congressional seat. “I never had any doubt about what the results would be in terms of my race,” Davis said. “It had to do with name recognition. It had to do with the billions of dollars I brought back to Chicago. It had to do with the bills I passed. It had to do with the integration of myself into the life of the community.” With the primary election over, Davis is
1ST DISTRICT RACE Surprise victory from page 1 During a March 26 phone interview, Boykin said that he made the call Monday afternoon. “I thought it was time to go on and put closure to this and I also pledged to work with him in a smooth transition,” Boykin said. “I wished him well and told him I’m here if you need me. I plan to finish out my term and I hope we work together. I thought he was gracious in victory.” The results of the primary election shocked many of Boykin’s supporters, who were confident that the first-term commissioner — a clear contrast to his predecessor, retired commissioner Earlean Collins — would win reelection comfortably. Early in his tenure, Boykin was outspoken about the Chicago area’s crime and seemingly ubiquitous in local media outlets as he pushed for various solutions, including a 7-point plan to end gun violence. Most of the particulars of that plan were overshadowed by Boykin’s proposal to charge shooters as domestic terrorists, an idea that generated some pushback among community leaders. The commissioner’s voluble criticism of an unpopular penny per ounce sweetened beverage tax pushed by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle channeled a majority of retailers and consumers in the county that lined up against the measure. The issue tarnished Preckwinkle’s image and seemed to have buoyed Boykin’s popularity enough that he flirted with challenging the powerful political figure for her board presidency before ultimately deciding to run for reelection to his own seat. The beverage tax was repealed last year, with Boykin legitimately laying claim to a not insignificant share of credit for the rollback. Boykin was also outspoken about his ability to bring money back to his district in the form of grants for roadwork and nonprofit support, among other uses. Boykin often reminded constituents that the millions in revenue he discovered

NEW COMMISH IN TOWN: Brandon Johnson speaks during election night on March 20. while in the commissioner’s seat was in stark contrast to the relative dearth of revenue that came from Collins. But the commissioner’s record, along with his high visibility in the 1st District (regularly hosting job fairs, award dinners and choir concerts, among many other functions), was not enough to inoculate him against campaign criticisms made by Johnson, who was able to mobilize Boykin’s achievements into apparent liabilities. Johnson, who garnered the support of national progressive political organizations like Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Revolution Illinois and MoveOn.org, described Boykin’s recommendation to charge shooters as terrorists as shortsighted and draconian. Johnson also seized on Boykin’s support of a $5.2 billion budget that included over 300 layoffs and the elimination of over 1,000 vacant positions in order to make up for the $200 million in projected revenue lost from the repeal of the sweetened beverage tax. During an interview with Austin Weekly News in Novem-
now poised to face Craig Cameron, a Chicago construction manager who beat River Forest physician Jeffrey Leef in the Republican Primary, 57 percent to 43 percent. Around 6,300 voters cast ballots in the 7th District Republican Primary, compared to more than 105,000 ballots that were cast in the Democratic Primary. The general election is on Nov. 6.
ber, Johnson offered a caustic description of Boykin’s first term in the commissioner’s seat, alleging the commissioner, an attorney and lobbyist by trade, had aligned himself with the Republican Party. “Unfortunately, what you’re hearing from Richard is about cuts, closures, consolidations and efficiencies,” Johnson said. “He’s going after working-class people. Those are the talking points of the Republican Party.” Johnson said that instead of supporting cuts, he would eye more progressive revenue options, such as a county head tax on corporations. The challenger was able to leverage nearly $500,000 in donations, mostly from unions like the Chicago Teachers Union PAC, the Illinois Federation of Teachers COPE and United Working Families, to get his message out. Around $224,000 of the roughly $400,000 that Boykin raised came from the candidate himself, with most of the rest coming from organizations that stood to benefit from the repeal of the sweetened beverage tax, such as the Illinois Beverage Association PAC and the American Beverage Association, The candidates’ respective funding sources were consistent with their characterizations of each other. Boykin painted Johnson as a puppet of the unions and of Preckwinkle, who endorsed him late in the election; while Johnson painted Boykin as a closeted conservative who was out of touch with many of the needs and concerns of his working-class constituents. When asked on March 21 whether he was surprised at last Tuesday’s results, Boykin instead talked about Johnson’s campaign, which he called “very negative and deceptive.” Boykin referenced “$500,000 in negative advertising calling me a Republican” and hundreds of fake campaign signs that described him as a Republican that appeared across the 1st District the weekend before the election. Boykin said he doesn’t know “how many people were confused by the signs and decided to vote against me.” On March 20, Johnson said that “people obviously wanted something different in the 1st District and I’m glad to be part of that.” CONTACT: thevillagefreepress@gmail.com

CALL FOR BACKUP: Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) during a community meeting several years ago in Austin. He’s now calling for residents to volunteer as block representatives.

BLOCK REP
Applications open from page 1 Rectory, 5701 W. Jackson Blvd., the alderman laid out why he believed block representatives were necessary. “We have a growing e-blast list, we have a growing Facebook presence, but still not everybody is getting information,” Taliaferro said. The problem, he said, that many residents either don’t get online at all or don’t have regular Internet access. While Facebook and e-mails are free, putting out mass mailings or putting an ad in local community newspapers costs money. During the March 15 meeting, he explained that he got the idea for block representatives from South Side Ald. Derrick Curtis (18th). He wanted to try it for a year and if it works well, make it permanent. Qiana Bradley, Taliaferro’s office manager, explained that a block representative would have a number of responsibilities. Around once a month, she or someone else from the ward office will send out information about upcoming events, programs and projects that would be of interest to 29th Ward residents in general and residents on their block in particular.
The ward office will provide them with fliers and other materials to help get the word out. Block representatives will also be able to take city service requests from their neighbors and pass them on to the ward office. Bradley said that they won’t publicize the block representatives’ names and contact information, but the residents who want to identify their block representatives and how to reach them will be able to contact her by calling the ward office at (773) 237-6460) and Bradley will connect the resident and representative. The block representatives would also be another way to improve community and police relations, supporters said. Sgt. Jermaine Harris, a 15th District CAPS officer, said it benefits everyone to have someone relay concerns to the police and get crimerelated alerts and other information to their neighbors. “Representing the block is critical,” he said. “We’re not going to be able to [reduce crime] unless we have support.” Everybody who attended the March 15 meeting had the opportunity to sign up to be their block club representatives right then and there. Taliaferro said that he was pleasantly surprised by how many people showed up at all. “I didn’t expect so many people, but when you’re concerned and love your block, [we] should expect it,” he said. Immigration enforcement led to black employment
W
hen one hears that an immigration enforcement activity caused about 800 people to lose their jobs, you would expect such a story to make headlines on the day it happened. If not that very day, then within days of it happening. Yet because of the manner in which it occurred, it was off the radar of major newspapers and television news stations in Chicago and around the country for months. Cloverhill Bakery, located in the Galewood section of Austin, had placed it ducats in the use of labor from temp agencies. It is the modern day method of guaranteeing that blacks will not be hired. How many black people pay attention to ads looking for workers when those ads are not in English? Or walk into the temporary agency affiliated with a particular factory and all of a sudden no one can speak English? If the loss of 800 workers represented about 35 percent of the work force, how come there wasn’t an employment office within the bakery to hire its own workers? Anyone who knows how temp agencies work, knows that if the worker is getting paid $10 an hour, then the temp agency is probably getting at least $15 or more. Multiply that $5 by 800 workers and that is $4,000 an hour. Multiply that $4,000 by a 24-hour day and that amounts to $96,000 a day! I remember hearing last summer something about a bakery losing a bunch of workers. But that news was in passing as
I helped someone write their résumé. I had meant to look into it further, but didn’t. One of the reasons the situation got overlooked is that ICE performed an I-9 audit. It basically sent letters to both the employer and the employees that their information didn’t match. In other words, at least 800 employees sent to the bakery by their temp agency had phony paperwork. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that those folks had to have some help. I have never been one to buy into the hype about illegal immigration not hurting black people. Prior to the enforcement raid, the bakery was heavily filled with foreign nationals who were predominately from Mexico. After the enforcement action, those same jobs now have black workers. The salaries also increased from $10 an hour to $14 an hour. That is good for the workers, but as I pointed out, the amount probably being paid to the temp agency was most likely at least $15. Where have black leadership and black politicians been on this issue? They prove their “bought and paid for status” by their repeated silence. Let one man be dragged off a plane and certain folks were ready to march on O’Hare Airport. Let a workforce go from predominately Hispanic and illegal aliens to one that is black and no one questions why it was allowed to happen in the first place.

Galewood Park Easter egg hunt prelude to future fun
The Galewood Park Advisory Council seeking to create more programming to come By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter
Galewood Park’s first-ever Easter egg hunt on March 24 turned out to be cloudier and colder than the organizers hoped, but that didn’t stop families from enjoying themselves. According to Richard Davis, the president of the Galewood Park Advisory Council, a total of 100 people of all ages showed up. There was a smaller egg patch for younger kids while older kids looked for eggs throughout the entire park. Children also got a chance to decorate egg baskets, have their faces painted and listen to stories. The Easter egg hunt was just one of the many ways the advisory council is trying to promote the park and expand its programs. The staff and the advisory council are looking to hold more outdoor events during the summer. They are also trying to put together a teen advisory council to get ideas from local youth. Monikue Young-Johnson, the park’s super-
visor, explained that, while park officials are trying to be as efficient with their existing space, she and her staff want more room for activities. The advisory council was revived last October to help expand the park’s program offerings and enhance its community outreach. The advisory council reached out to state Rep. Camille Lilly (78th), Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th) and the 25th District police — all of whom attended the event. “Everybody was engaged, everybody was having fun,” said Young-Johnson. “We were bringing the community together, all kind of diverse people, and that’s what [overshadowed] the coldness.” As the summer draws near, the advisory council is trying to put together even more activities, she added. “We’re going to be doing Stories in the Park,” Davis said. “We’re going to be having movie nights for the community that we’ll be getting through the Chicago Park District’s Movies in the Parks program. And we want more family-involved programs and activities to bring more people into the park.” Young-Johnson said that the park will be having a Taste of Galewood event on Aug. 25 to mark the end of summer.
