Activists, alderman clash over academy A proposed police/fire training academy for W. Garfield Park rankles residents By BONNI McKEOWN Contributing Reporter
Earlier this month, the group #NoCopAcademy spotlighted the growing opposition to a proposed $95 million police/fire training academy at 4301 W. Chicago Ave. in West Garfield Park with a contentious visit to Ald. Emma Mitts’ office and a die-in demonstration at City Hall. The group wants the city to redirect that $95 million to other uses, such as neighborhood-level job creation, school funding and increased provision of medical care, including mental health resources and substance abuse treatments. A contract to build the academy was not on the Chicago City Council’s agenda March 28, but Black Lives Matter organizer Maria Hernandez, who lives eight blocks away from the site of the proposed academy, says the group wants to raise public awareness before a vote comes up. That same day, Erin Glasco and Debbie Southorn, both with the #NoCopAcademy campaign, filed an open records lawsuit against Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office for allegedly “refusing to disclose crucial emails and records regarding the early See TRAINING ACADEMY on page 4

LESSON IN RESILIENCE: Edwin Muldrow stands outside of Del-Kar Pharmacy, 3726 W. 16th St. Del-Kar was one of the few stores that survived the riots following King’s assassination on April 4, 1968.
After the ’68 riots, still here
Del-Kar Pharmacy in North Lawndale, once patronized by King, survived the riots that followed his murder By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
Edwin Muldrow, the owner of Del-Kar Pharmacy, 3726 W. 16th St., can tell you what the neighborhood was like more than 50 years ago, when black-owned retailers, restaurants, barbershops, beauty salons, night clubs and laundromats contributed to a living, relatively self-sustaining local ecosystem. Del-Kar was started by Muldrow’s father, Edward, in 1960, making the North Lawn-
dale drugstore possibly the oldest blackowned pharmacy in the city. The store was here before Martin Luther King Jr. had reached the apotheosis of his ministry with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Del-Kar was here when a radicalized King re-focused his concentration on northern injustices, moving into a run-down apartment at 1550 S. Hamlin Ave., a block away from the pharmacy, during his 1966 Chicago Campaign against housing segregation.
“King would come into the store every day when he was living on Hamlin,” Edwin recalled. “He would pick up a newspaper and go to Mr. Woods Pool Hall and shoot pool. He’d eat barbecue [at a store nearby]. He was very active in the neighborhood when was here.” Del-Kar was here for King’s murder on April 4, 1968, and the few hellish days and nights of rioting that followed.

BEFORE ‘68: The murder of Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968, rocked the West Side of Chicago like no other part of the city. The West Side was home to King in 1966, when he decided to come up north to fight housing segregation. He chose this area of the city because it had long been neglected and was poorer and less politically empowered than the South Side. When King died in 1968, the West Side mourned so hard because, at least for a time, he was one of our own.

Austin veteran garden clears cost hurdle
The City Council approved $155K to pay for monument at 5413 W. Madison
According to a LinkedIn post that SANA posted in January, the concept of the veterans’ garden came out of the group’s discussion about what they could do to serve veterans in Austin. The organization felt that it was an underserved population, noting that Austin didn’t have a Veterans of Foreign Wars post, or any other place where they could meet and hold activities. The group decided to create something
that would honor veterans of all wars American troops were involved in. The park would also honor dogs that served in the military. Terry Redmond, a SANA board member, is a veteran herself. Redmond said that she reached out to other Austin veterans and they agreed to work with her organization to maintain the garden once it goes up. In 2017, SANA teamed up with NeighborSpace, an East Garfield Park-based non-
profit that helps community groups build community gardens by buying property and handling logistics such as securing water and buying insurance. According to information on SANA’s website and NeighorSpace’s project page, the garden will have a fence, complete with a peace symbol and codes of arms of all four branches of the U.S. military. Beyond the gate, a path will lead the visitors toward a “flag circle,” which will feature the U.S. flag and the flags of the military branches. The path will continue to the north end of the lot, leading to a pavilion area on the right and a sitting area on the left. Redmond said that the garden would also feature a butterfly garden and a sculpture. According to the documents submitted to the Chicago City Council, the project is expected to cost a total of $245,088 with $30,000 of it going toward land acquisition and $22,088 going toward project management. The rest of the money will go toward construction, site preparation and planting. Redmond said that now that the funding has been approved, SANA will sit down with NeighorSpace and Christy Webber, whose landscaping company is helping with the design, to discuss some of the particulars. Redmond said that it is still too early to talk about when the garden would open, but that, with the funding hurdle cleared, she’s feeling optimistic about the project’s pending completion. “We’re getting close,” she said. “We’re finally getting closer.” CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com
and the fire academy is at 1338 S. Clinton. The group demonstrating at City Hall on March 28 included dozens of students on spring break who lay on the floor for a nearly 10-minute “die-in.” Police barred protestors from the second floor, but allowed them to set up dozens of cardboard “tombstones” in the main hall. The tombstones bore names of people killed in police shootings, such as Laquan McDonald and Bettie Jones. Noted hip-hop artist Chance the Rapper, who rose to criticize the proposed police academy at the November City Hall meeting where the land purchase was authorized, tweeted his support of the March protest. At the March 17 organizing session, Hernandez reported that she and other #No Cop Academy members had canvassed 400 residents in Garfield Park over two to three winter months, and found many did not know about the academy. Asked how they’d want the city to spend the $95 million, 33 percent of the respondents favored schools; 19 percent wanted it spent on public spaces, services and resources; 9 percent on creating jobs; 16 percent on housing, 4 percent on reclaiming and repairing vacant properties; 4 percent on community medical services; 13 percent on programs for youth; and 3 percent on police and security.
On March 19, a delegation of #NoCopAcademy including three neighborhood middle school students visited Ald. Emma Mitts during a regular ward meeting and encountered opposition from her staff. They waited until the end of the meeting, when Mitts eventually agreed to speak with them. She reiterated points from a March 18 op-ed piece she wrote about the police academy. “We are talking about a place where firefighters, paramedics and police officers will train and work jointly,” she wrote, “where important techniques in de-escalation with community members will be taught … a place where our first responders can learn how to better interact with homeless, other troubled at-risk and mentally ill residents … that will create dozens of businesses nearby and be an economic engine to help revitalize a community.” Before the Nov. 8, 2017, council meeting, Ald. Walter Burnett (27th) and Mitts hailed the proposed academy as an economic and public safety boon to an impoverished West Side. “I’m not trying to say the facility is going to change police behavior, but what we want to happen is the perception,” Mitts told the council. “I want a perception to change for our youth — not all police officers or firemen are bad.” Mitts’ March 18 op-ed questioned why no-
body protested the expenditure of $200 million on a park for the Lincoln Park area, which is outside of her ward. At the March 19 meeting, Hernandez countered that more park and recreation activities might be good for the West Side as well, but any proposal as large as the police/fire training academy needs to be aired with citizens in the community. Mitts said that the project had been discussed last year by about 70 people in a regular community meeting, but Hernandez said the topic of the police academy had not been announced beforehand nor were the meeting’s proceedings publicized afterward. According to the Sun-Times on Nov. 6, 2017, construction of the two-building campus would be bankrolled by $20 million from the sale of a valuable North Side fleet maintenance facility, $5 million from the sale of the air rights above a River North fire station, and $23 million from the sale of existing police and fire facilities. Fleet and Facilities Management Commissioner David Reynolds said that the city would work with the Chicago Infrastructure Trust to close the remaining $37 million gap through a “straight loan,” a lease buy-back arrangement or by issuing “bonds to pay for it ourselves.” CONTACT: bonni@barrelhousebonni.com

The Chicago City Council recently voted unanimously to allocate $155,000 to cover the costs of building the proposed Veteran’s Peace Garden at 5413 West Madison Street, across the street from MacArthur’s restaurant. The garden is something that the South Austin Neighborhood Association (SANA) has been working toward since 2016. It will honor Austin veterans and provide a space for public activities. The association also envisions it as a place of quiet contemplation along busy Madison Street. Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th), who is a veteran himself, has been a vocal supporter. The costs will come from the city’s Open Space Impact Fee program. According to the city’s website, the program “allocates fees that are applied to new residential developments to pay for land acquisition and park improvements in each of Chicago’s 77 community areas.” Meg Gustafson, a project coordinator at the city’s Department of Planning and Development, told aldermen on March 26 that the Open Space Impact Fee program will pay for $155,000 of the project. Around $90,000 will come from Ald. Taliaferro’s aldermanic menu budget.
TRAINING ACADEMY Clash of opinions from page 1 planning” for the academy. At a March 17 organizing meeting at Bethel Lutheran Church, 130 N. Keeler, West Side resident Hazel Williams decried the lack of information coming from City Hall about the project. “There’s been no information from the mayor’s office,” she said. “It’s like they’re trying to sneak it up on us with no town halls or public meetings. If this is such a great thing, why not talk about it?” Last November, the full City Council authorized a $9.6 million purchase of the roughly 30 acres of land for the West Side site, which has been vacant for 40 years. Funding for the land will come from the surrounding taxincrement financing district. The council vote was 49-1, with 35th Ward Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa providing the sole dissenting vote. Council members were following the lead of Ald. Mitts, in whose 37th Ward the project is located. The present police academy is located at 1300 W. Jackson

Imposing tariffs would hurt, not help, American jobs
reading this was produced in Canada. This year the Department of Commerce has imposed two preliminary tariffs that have increased the price of newsprint for some newspapers by more than 30 percent. This summer, both agencies will explore whether this temporary tariff should become permanent. If this happens, trade laws that are intended to protect American jobs and interests will have the opposite effect. For newspapers, staff and newsprint are the largest expenses. Faced with those kinds of increases, newspaper publishers throughout Illinois and the rest of the country will have to make hard decisions that will ultimately impact the coverage of local issues and the staff that report on those issues. There isn’t enough newsprint produced in the U.S. to meet the demand of the industry, and given the fact that newsprint consumption has dropped by more than 75 percent since 2000, no U.S. producer is going to invest in starting a newsprint mill. Mills cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build and take years to come into full production. If these tariffs are made permanent, the New York hedge fund wins as it now has increased the value of its asset, and the federal government wins as tariffs collected go to the Department of Commerce. Sadly, the country will lose as local newspaper employees will be impacted, and those people, events and issues that newspapers report on will lose as well. If you agree, contact your federal elected officials to let them know that this is wrong, and that one company must not be allowed to use trade laws to its advantage while adversely impacting local communities throughout Illinois and the rest of the country.

grew up hearing fairytales and Bible stories, both had a familiar ending: “And the moral of this story is …” Life back then taught us lessons that we carried forth into everyday behaviors. We didn’t have political correctness. Nor did we have the mindset that everyone wins and no one loses. Rather, there existed common sense that tended to prevail in all aspects of life. I am grateful for the type of upbringing I had. Years ago, I worked with a group of people who wanted to establish an organization here in Austin to encourage pride in homeownership. At the time, we had a choice of picking between one person who was a good speaker and a second person whose entire heart and being was dedicated to preserving what we had found in Austin — beautiful homes, safe neighborhoods, and a sense of community — but whose speech pattern left much to be desired. We went with the good talker for the leadership role. In the end, however, his interests lay in things that caused us a lot of hesitation. The group floundered and we knew that our choice of the smooth talker over the man with heart was the reason. From that moment on, I learned never to judge someone by their speech pattern. It is more important to hear what they have to say as opposed to the manner in which they say it. It was one of those “moral to the story” moments. With that thought in mind, I watched the Chicago Tonight interview, March 28, with mayoral candidate Dr. Willie Wilson. It was an interview everyone should watch and especially listen to what he says. In the years since his initial run, I’ve been impressed with his commitment to Chicago and have been in agreement with many of his initiatives. Under the current mayor, we
don’t really have genuine leadership. What we have is a mayoral bully who gets his way, and thus the city loses. In the interview, Wilson came out swinging. He first states that the mayor and his band of 50 thieves (my terminology) don’t know how to run this city. I gotta agree. The mayor proposes any dumb idea and the majority of aldermen nods their heads in agreement, proving that puppet politics remains alive and well in Chicago. Wilson mentioned economic parity, jobs, school closings, the murder of Laquan McDonald, firing Superintendent Eddie Johnson, taxes, etc. To paraphrase one of his best lines during the interview, he basically said that Rahm Emmanuel closed the mental health facilities, and Rahm should have been the first one in line to receive treatment. The more I listened to the interview, the more I agreed with what Wilson was saying. I will not fault him for his speech pattern. Rather I will judge him on what he has managed to accomplish. Willie Wilson represents one of my favorite lines: “In spite of.” He can preface his talks with a multitude of that kind of message. In spite of only having a seventh grade education, he has become a millionaire. In spite of those who told him he couldn’t, he did. In spite of this country defining him, he defined himself ! I believe Willie Wilson can be the role model our children can relate to. He can win if we come out and get everyone we know to come out and vote him come Feb. 26, 2019. Here’s the link to the interview: https://chicagotonight.wttw. com/2018/03/28/businessman-philanthropist-willie-wilson-makes-2nd-bidchicago-mayor

DELKAR Endurance from page 1 “There was a white-owned drugstore on every corner, from Kedzie to Kostner, and each one was torched,” Edwin said. “My father’s was the only to remain. He and my mother were living in Markham at that time and he was commuting. So he’d come over one evening during the riots and the Vice Lords told him to go home. We’re not going to let anything happen to your store.” And 50 years later, Del-Kar remains — the largely forgotten history of King’s assassination and the riots that followed it fossilized within the drug store’s walls. “These kids grew up in the vacant lot generation,” Edwin said one afternoon last week in between handling customers. “They don’t know what the street looked like when there were actual businesses. It’s astonishing for them to see the photos we have here. They’ll say, ‘Man, I didn’t know 16th Street looked like this.’ It was once a bustling retail corridor.” There’s a deeper lesson contained in Del-Kar’s resiliency that might provide a blueprint for resurrecting the West Side’s long-neglected economy, Edwin suggested. Edward, who died last year at 88, understood the dynamics of the neighborhood where he did business, his son said.

HIDDEN HISTORY: Left, Martin Luther King Jr. walks out of his North Lawndale apartment building in 1966. The apartment was a block away from Del-Kar Pharmacy, established in 1960 by Edward Muldrow, pictured right. “Me and my father have done an excellent job of policing our property,” Edwin said. “We don’t tolerate loitering or open drug markets. But you have to have respect in the community and you have to know the stakeholders, so when you have an issue you can call those stakeholders involved and deal with that issue without calling the police.” Those relationships with neighborhood stakeholders proved vital during another
urban disturbance on the West Side. In 1991, when the Chicago Bulls won their first championship, there was also “rioting in the neighborhood, breaking in and stealing, especially on Madison and Pulaski,” Edwin said. But the store, once again, was unscathed. “Dad had come down to check on things and one of the new generation of street leaders said, ‘Yeah, go home. We ain’t going
to let anything happen to your store.’” Whether dealing with street gangs or a civil rights icon, Edwin said that the formula for engendering respect and trust is the same — something his father passed on to him. “The guys respected my father for being straight up,” the son said. How the West Side burned
On April 4, 1968, an assassin’s bullet hit King, then all hell broke loose By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
The following chronology of events is primarily based on the reporting of Hank de Zutter, who covered the riots for the nowdefunct Chicago Daily News and published a much fuller account of his reporting in the Chicago Reader in 1988; Janet L. AbuLughod’s Race, Space, and Riots in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles; and the Report of the Chicago Riot Study Committee to the Hon. Richard J. Daley, published when the riots were over.
Thursday, April 4, 1968 ■ 6:01 p.m. (CST) | Martin Luther King Jr. is shot and fatally wounded at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn. He’s rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where he’s pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m. All three TV networks interrupted their regular programming with the news. ■ Within minutes of the nationwide news, James M. Rochford, Chicago police deputy superintendent, is meeting with his top aides at police headquarters, 1121 S. State. They decide to cancel days off for the city’s 11,500 police officers in order to preempt retaliatory violence. ■ The riot study committee report states that during the “early morning hours of April 4 and 5, the citizens residing in the near north Cabrini-Green housing complex, the west side areas surrounding West Madison Street and West Roosevelt Road, and the south side area including 63rd Street from Stony Island Avenue to Halsted Street were off the streets watching television, listening to the radio or discussing Dr. King’s death quietly among themselves.” ■ Young people in the city’s ghettos, particularly on the South and West Sides, meet to plot various collective courses of action. At one meeting on the West Side, “a few older militants” speak of revenge, de Zutter writes. Rev. Virgil Patterson, of the Lawndale Presbyterian Church, 1908 S. Millard, tells the reporter later on that an “eerie silence” permeated the streets. ■ A gasoline bomb thrown into Calvary Presbyterian church, 4201 W. Jackson, interrupts the silence. The church is destroyed. Police later arrest five blacks, some of whom were at those meetings, and charge them with firebombing the church and four buildings. ■ Outside of the church fire, police would later say, Thursday night and early Friday morning were without incident.
Friday, April 5, 1968 ■ Before 9 a.m. | Black children arrive at school carrying pictures of King pinned to their clothes. Many students, however, sim-
ply stay home. ■ At predominantly black Marshall High School, 3250 W. Adams, students print out fliers urging their peers throughout the city to “show your respect” for King’s assassination by “staying out of school.” The students, with the help of some adults, circulate the flyers to nearby schools. ■ 9 a.m. | Students start to leave Marshall and walk through the streets. According to one young worker, the students gestured to some of the white shop owners along Madison and Kedzie. Many of the shop owners, sensing violence and vandalism, close their stores. By noon, many would be gone. ■ At Marshall, school officials discuss holding memorial assemblies, but teachers can’t even hold class. ■ 10 a.m. | By this point, Marshall has been mostly emptied of students. It was an orderly exit, for the most part, school officials say. No violence other than a few garbage fires. Students from Farragut and Harrison high schools merge with Marshall students and march orderly up Kedzie before turning west on Madison. ■ Some stones are thrown, but most of the roughly 1,500 marchers — among them children as young as 7 years old — are peaceful. As they head toward Austin High, 231 N. Pine, the marchers sing “We Shall Overcome” and chant “King is dead.” On the way to Austin High, the demonstrators encounter police resistance. ■ 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. | The marchers stop in Garfield Park, where some among them make angry speeches. By the time they arrive at Austin High, the group is met by police officers, who decide to take some control of the situation. ■ Warner Saunders, the director of the Better Boys Foundation and a witness to the demonstration, says this is the point “where nonviolence turned into violence.” Scuffles between the youths and the police breakout. ■ One Farragut junior recalls that “it was a swell march until then,” but that “some of the militant souls decided they wanted more. They said the whites had killed nonviolence so they must want violence.” Saunders, among others, said that the police overreacted.
■ Amid the confusion, police fire shots in the air. The demonstrators then leave Austin High and head east on Madison, where they do “considerable damage to stores and shops.” ■ Some people, formerly part of the mass demonstration, head to the Loop, where they make “considerable noise” and cause “some minor property damage.” By early afternoon, however, a heavy police presence puts an end to p
the downtown malaise. ■ Janet L. Abu-Lughod later writes, “Perhaps partly as a result of this show of force, few arrests were made downtown; instead, window breakage, looting, and eventually arson were reported principally back along unguarded West Madison Street within the ghetto. ■ 2 p.m. | The vandalism having begun in earnest, Chicago Police Superintendent James B. Conlisk calls Mayor Daley and requests that he call out the National Guard. The police are “spread much too thin,” de Zutter reports. “Within minutes, Acting Governor Samuel Shapiro, called by the mayor, mobilized the Guard.” ■ “Fear gripped the city.” Workers carried guns to their places of employment, whites were “pulled from their cars, from buses, from stores they were trying to close.” West Side streets were “impassable.” ■ 4 p.m. | The first fire breaks out on the West Side at a furniture store — located at 2235 W. Madison (blocks from the current site of the United Center) — that had already been looted. ■ More firebombs follow in quick succession. “As quickly as a store was looted, it was firebombed,” de Zutter writes. Suburban fire departments are dispatched “to man outlying stations,” Streets and Sanitation workers are “pressed into serve as auxiliary fire fighters,” half of the city’s firefighting equipment is in use in “an area bounded roughly by Damen, Madison, Kildare, and 16th.” ■ 7:15 p.m. | The riot has by now claimed its first victim — Ponowel Holloway, a 16-yearold Marshall sophomore who lived at 3946 W. Maypole. He was reportedly shot dead while
looting a store at 4135 W. Madison. ■ Not long after Holloway is killed, Cyrus Hartfield, a 32-year-old who lived at 4113 W. Van Buren, was found at 4113 W. Madison with a gunshot wound to the chest. ■ 11 p.m. | The first units of the Illinois National Guard, tear gas at the ready to disperse rioters and looters, rolled into the streets “in jeeps like American gunboats in the China seas,” de Zutter writes. Saturday, April 6, 1968 ■ 3 a.m. | The National Guard troops restore some semblance of order back to the streets, although the “fires crackled on.” The police and National Guard make many arrests. ■ 7 a.m. | The looters return, with Daily News reporter Ed Rooney describing the rioting on Roosevelt, Kedzie, Madison and Western as “crucial.” The police, Rooney reported, “were obviously overwhelmed and the National Guard troops were inexperienced and outmaneuvered by the rioters, who seemed to be toying with them.” ■ 12 p.m. | Daley announces a curfew on all residents younger than 21 years old each night from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next day and bans sales of liquor and gas-bythe-can. ■ 4 p.m. | Upon the request of Conlisk and Daley, federal troops, deployed by President Lyndon Johnson, are en route to Chicago from bases in Texas and Colorado. ■ Sunday, April 7, 1968 ■ Federal troops arrive in Chicago as cleanup and demolition of unsafe structures begins. Daley extends the city curfew for the second night.
Monday, April 8 - Wednesday, April 10 1968 ■ Schools reopen and memorial services scheduled to take place on April 5 are held, but attendance is still low. Many national guardsmen remain on the West Side as the courts process 2,000 to 3,000 riot-related arrests. ■ On Tuesday, Chicago public schools are “finally closed in memory of King,” [XXX] writes, and many shops in areas where riots took place are closed for the day. Mayor Daley declares “the official emergency terminated” as the national guard begins to demobilize. The mayor also lifts the curfew.
Monday, April 15 ■ Mayor Daley holds a press conference to announce the creation of his riot study committee. The mayor take the opportunity to rail against Police Superintendent Conlisk, who Daley said had not followed his orders to “shoot to kill arsonists and maim and detain looters” at the beginning of the riots. Poet pens ode to West Side
AustinTalks
Poet Markell L. Mooney held a book signing and impromptu poetry slam Saturday to unveil his newly published Words of Life. Family and friends gathered at the Chicago Public Library’s West Chicago Avenue branch, 4856 W. Chicago Ave., to support Mooney, who spent part of his childhood in Austin and goes by “Kell-O-G.” Mooney, 42, said it took him 11 years to write the book, which is a compilation of poems he has written since 1997. Words of Life is split into three parts: The Words, Words of Love and Words of Life. “I write about love, family, social and economic issues. I took my entire collection and categorized each poem to fit in their own sections,” Mooney said. He first became interested in writing in his late teens, inspired by Jim Morrison, Maya Angelou and Stevie Wonder. “I would take words from Stevie Wonder’s albums and put them into my own poetry to smooth talk the girls.” Since then, his writing process has become more complex and includes using poetry as a therapy to get him through difficult times. Many of the poems in his book are based on his own experiences, including growing up in Austin. On page 39, readers will find Welcome to the Westside of the Chi, a tribute to his fond memories of summer days in Austin: Welcome to the Westside of the Chi / Where on every block

led to an impromptu poetry slam, pitting the three poets against one another. “It’s not really a competition; it’s a language and everyone speaks in their own way. We can do what we do in front of the crowd, and then come back and still be best friends,” Thompson said. Thompson, 27, is CEO of E.P.I.C. Movement, an organization that holds poetry workshops and open mic nights. Thompson and Mooney met at a poetry event in 2016. Since then, the pair has hosted events together, including the annual Poetry on the Patio held in Austin each summer. Mooney’s book inspires Thompson because of the “rawness” of the work. “It’s a book I appreciate because I know it’s heartfelt, real and basically a confessional,” Thompson said. Pugh also known as “Prolific,” is a 23-year-old spoken word artist and vice president of E.P.I.C. Movement. Pugh said witnessing the process of Mooney put “everything on the pages” was empowering. “Writing is so powerful. When you take that extra step to express yourself in any form, it’s beautiful,” Pugh said. Sanford Prude was especially impressed and inspired by Words of Life; Prude and Mooney have known each other through their membership in the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons state of Illinois. “I’m extremely proud of my brother. He’s making a great effort to better himself through his poetry. I’m excited to see what his future holds,” Prude said. Mooney recently applied for an Illinois Arts Council grant. Should he receive the $1,500 grant, the money will help him attend book festivals and professional development seminars, including the African-American Book Festival that will be held in Austin, Texas in June.

Teens revel in stories, scholarships
BUILD Chicago gives away thousands to young storytellers By SUZANNE McBRIDE AustinTalks
They have overcome all sorts of challenges – parents divorcing, a father going to prison, multiple moves, bad grades, trouble paying rent and problems with peers. But that’s not what stood out on a recent Thursday night at the headquarters of BUILD, a nonprofit that works with young people in Austin and other Chicago neighborhoods. It was the spirit, the resilience, the power of each story being told by six young people – stories that resonated with so many of the friends, family members and West Side residents who packed BUILD’s headquarters on March 15. This is an annual event at BUILD; the public speaking contest has been held each of the last eight springs. This year’s participants – ranging in age from 16 to just 9 years old – was as memorable as all the others, perhaps more so. “This is the most unique group we’ve had,” said Judge Pat Spratt, who spent weeks working with the students as they developed their speeches. LaQuisha Johnson, 16, began her speech with spoken word: “I’m uniquely spectacular, one of a kind. . . . I’m inspired, desired, I’m wonderfully weird . . . I’m daring and bold. I’m a treasure to hold. I am God in disguise . . . Life becomes brighter because I am here . . . I cannot be contained.” While living in Las Vegas, LaQuisha hooked up with the wrong people, stopped going to school and started smoking. When she

She credits BUILD with helping her become more confident and providing a place where she and other students feel safe and there’s no judgment. Alexandria Navarrio Sanchez talked about what her life has been like since her dad went to prison when she was 9. At times, the teen said she turned to the wrong people for affec-
tion and let what others thought or said about her affect her. Alexandria got involved with BUILD’s art and music programs, which showed her and her sister, who is also a participant, “something different.” “BUILD has given me the opportunity to find myself and build myself during the most difficult times.” Before coming to BUILD, “I was a hot mess,” said Alexandria, who went from earning C’s and D’s as a sophomore to now earning a 4.0. “I am in a good way now, and I’m looking forward to my future.” The youngest participant – Emmanuel Malone – stood on a stool to deliver his speech. “My neighborhood can be dangerous, but it also can be a lot of fun,” said the Austin resident, adding that he likes to learn every day. His “great success” is football, and he also likes math. When Mo’nai McClellan had an issue with a male friend, staffers at BUILD told her that ignoring him was not the way to handle the situation. Communication is the only bandage that heals this wound, they told her. So Mo’nai and the boy talked through their problems and now are friends again. Mo’Nai said when some of her female peers have gotten into altercations over boys she’s urged them to focus on their education. “This is my BUILD story.” The 10 judges were so impressed with the speeches, they decided to award three 1st place prizes of $1,000 scholarships to LaQuisha, Mo’Nai and Alexandria. David Daniel was awarded a $500 scholarship, Khalil Griffin received a $250 scholarship, and Emmanuel received the “fearless” award.
