On the West Side, Airbnb is rising

Listings up big in North Lawndale, East Garfield Park, Humboldt Park, company says By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Tanya Petty, a 65-year-old who lives on Warren Blvd. and California in East Garfield Park, usually meets her guests with a warm greeting and a ceremonial house tour. Last month, the Loyola University Chicago graduate’s attention was affixed to the TV as the Ramblers played in what would be one among a string of heart-stopping NCAA tournament games during their recent unlikely run to the Final Four. Her house guest — a sports journalist visiting Chicago from Chile to attend Bulls and Blackhawks games — would have to wait for Petty’s pomp and circumstance. There were two minutes left in a close game. “Loyola is my team,” she said in a phone interview last month. Petty is among the many West Side residents who share their homes through Airbnb, the short-term lodging company based in San Francisco. According to data the company released last month, roughly 1,800 West Siders opened their homes and apartments to 152,000 Airbnb guests in 2017 — up 35 percent from 2016. Airbnb hosts, the company said, earned a combined $21 million in revenue — up 23 percent from 2016. See AIRBNB on page 6

Retired postal worker still in service business Rev. Henry Farmby now delivers messages from his West Side pulpit

By BONNI McKEOWN Contributing Reporter

Henry Farmby may have retired from the U.S. Postal Service after nearly five decades, but he won’t stop serving the West Side. During a March 31 retirement party held at Bethel New Life Center’s Amberg Hall, 1140 N. Lamon Ave., Farmby said he’ll just have more time to devote to a higher service — his role as pastor of New Rock of Ages Bap-

tist church, 5222 W. North Ave. “For 28 years, I’ve had a ministry, too,” Farmby said during last month’s retirement party. “I did both jobs full-time, so I’m going to keep doing my ministry.” The veteran mail carrier, who started his long career as a mail handler at a post office downtown, said that his two life’s callings are similar in some key respects. “My job at the post office was the same as ministry,” he said. “I delivered physical let-

ters through the post office and spiritual letters from the Lord. All He’s telling us is the same thing He’s told us since the Garden of Eden — Get right!” Farmby was born in Chicago. He was his high school’s valedictorian, but he turned down a scholarship to attend college in order to accept a job offer from the post office. “At that time we needed the money more

King came to the West Side, because the political leadership here, with few exceptions, was ready to take on City Hall; whereas folk on the South Side, other than people like Clay Evans, weren’t. Of ‘Black Panther’ and progress By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor/Opinion

I sat in the movie theater transfixed. Here was a cast and a film crew featuring African Americans. Here was a technological utopia built and peopled by blacks. Here were complicated villains and heroes. But as stunned as I was by the silver-screened marvel that is Marvel’s mythological Wakanda, I could not help but think about very real places like Austin and many other predominantly black and brown locales like it that exist around the country. I’ll try not to spoil things for the few who haven’t already seen the mega blockbuster, but there’s a point where the people of Wakanda decide to build a bridge to the real world, to share some of their wealth, knowledge and expertise with their brethren trapped in history and time, contained within a system that, for nearly half a millennium, has kept them confined to ghettos, favelas, shantytowns and prisons (if not physically, then psychologically). A Wakanda-built flying machine lands in (what I’ll just call) any inner city in America and the fictional nation’s leaders work to implement what is essentially a social outreach

effort to share their knowledge and technology with their black American brothers and sisters who have been shut out of the African nation’s freedom and bounty. The gesture is the equivalent of Barack Obama (our flesh-and-blood Wakandan King T’Challa) building his presidential library on the South Side. The expansive proposal, Wakanda-esque in its design, has generated a groundswell of grassroots opposition for what critical voices say could lead to gentrification and displacement down the line. The Obama library controversy demonstrates that solutions to the poverty, blight, disinvestment and violence that characterizes so many black and brown communities (and countries) outside of Wakanda are messy and are not so easily resolved by simply exposing the denizens of these unfortunate areas to technological wizardry and wealth. As Martin Luther King Jr. said in his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech: “Modern man has brought this whole world to an awe-inspiring threshold of the future. He has reached new and astonishing peaks of scientific success. He has produced machines that think and instruments that

peer into the unfathomable ranges of interstellar space. He has built gigantic bridges to span the seas and gargantuan buildings to kiss the skies. His airplanes and spaceships have dwarfed distance, placed time in chains, and carved highways through the stratosphere. This is a dazzling picture of modern man’s scientific and technological progress. “Yet, in spite of these spectacular strides in science and technology, and still unlimited ones to come, something basic is missing. There is a sort of poverty of the spirit which stands in glaring contrast to our scientific and technological abundance. The richer we have become materially, the poorer we have become morally and spiritually. We have learned to fly the air like birds and swim the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers.” Join me on Saturday, April 14, 1 p.m., at Loyola Strict School of Medicine’s Tobin Hall, 2160 S. 1st Ave. in Maywood, for a town hall-style dialogue about this and other matters related to ‘Black Panther’. This is a free event that will feature African drummers, food, networking and fun. CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

Alliance forms to strengthen W. Side arts scene

Chicago Cultural Performing Arts and Media Alliance, launched in March, looking for members By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter

The founders of a new alliance are looking to improve the landscape for up-and-coming artists on the West Side. At a March 31 launch party, Daniel and Victoria Allen said that the new Chicago Cultural Performing Arts and Media Alliance will focus on three major priorities. The Allens said that members of the alliance will compile and share information about job and exhibition opportunities, teach local artists the skills needed start businesses and organizations, and work to secure funding for members. Daniel, who is a police officer, said that the alliance would work to achieve some cohesion in an area that doesn’t have a strong reputation for unity. “People on the West Side don’t work together,” Allen said. “In West Garfield Park, I’ve seen how nonprofits don’t work well together.” The Allens, who in 2017 founded the Divine Purpose Youth Performing Arts Center, 4540 W. Washington Blvd. in West Garfield Park, said that the alliance is a logical extension of what they’re hoping to achieve with the their center.

IGOR STUDENKOV/Contributor

A TOAST: The founders and founding members of the Chicago Cultural Performing Arts and Media Alliance toast to the new organization during a March 31 launch party in East Garfield Park. “We’re better together — that’s our motto,” Victoria said. Daniel said that he hopes the alliance can “bring organizations together in [visual] arts, performing arts, video, etc.,” so that individual artists and groups can “support each other’s visions.” The Allens explained that through the alliance, they will establish an email list to alert members of exhibitions, calls for artists and funding opportunities. They’ll hold business

development seminars and workshops, in addition to courses in grant writing. Alliance members are each asked to pay a $20 membership fee [monthly/yearly?] to help cover administrative costs. Daniel said that the alliance will also pursue government and private funding as well. The alliance has a board of directors comprising several members. Allen serves as its president while Paul Thigpen is treasurer and Harry Bell, a youth specialist at Divine

Purpose and budding PR professional, is a youth representative. Allen said that he’s looking to expand the board. At last month’s launch party, held at 345 Art Gallery in East Garfield Park, alliance founding member Corry Williams, who owns the gallery, said that he and Allen have been trying to create constructive projects within the 11th police district for some time. “We just want to bring exposure and experience to different businesses on the West Side and come together as a collaborative group and support each other,” said Williams, who is also a police officer. Other members of the alliance said that they’re looking forward to making an impact on the West Side through the arts. Tonia Humphrey, a dance instructor, said that she hopes the alliance will provide her with opportunities to go into public schools on the West Side to teach students dance. And Matt Baron, a public school teacher and creative director for Silent Funny — a performance and exhibition space in West Humboldt Park — said that an alliance should make it easier for other artists trying to get their own visions off of the ground. Baron recalled his agonizing experience of applying for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. “The paperwork was a pain,” he said. “I was afraid of applying for grants. I’m grateful there’s an organization that makes us strong.” CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com

AIRBNB

Pressing west from page 1 A 2017 Chicago Tribune report estimated that there were roughly 5,200 total listings in Chicago last year, according to Inside Airbnb, a website that independently monitors the company’s listings. “We’ve been seeing this trend for a few years now,” said Benjamin Breit, Airbnb’s Midwest press secretary, during a phone call last month. “For decades, there’s been a very healthy hotel industry centralized in Chicago’s loop and downtown central business district, and that makes since, but that’s only one area that tourists have taken advantage of,” he said. “Now, that’s changed. If you want to stay on the West Side, you can do that.” Breit said that the West Side neighborhoods that have experienced the fastest growth in Airbnb hosts are North Lawndale, East Garfield Park and Humboldt Park, with the latter leading the pack. Humboldt Park, coincidentally, has also experienced steep housing increases. A report released last year by the Institute for Housing Studies at DePaul University found that home prices west of Western Avenue have jumped by nearly 50 percent since the installation of the 606 trail — a popular 2.7-mile converted rail line that runs through Humboldt Park, Bucktown, Wicker Park and Logan Square.

The micro-aggressions of Arlene Jones I am a huge fan of the work you all produce that highlight the great things going on in and around the Austin community. I always look forward to picking up your paper and reading your articles. I work closely with the Austin community and I am deeply rooted in Chicago’s South and West Side. I am always impressed with your work, because it highlights the good things

that happen every day in the community that aren’t always highlighted in our local media. With that being said, I am confused as to why you all would allow a person, such as Arlene Jones, to continually write pieces for you, that are shared across Chicago and that blatantly use such violent and discriminatory language such as “illegal aliens,” which she employed in a column published online May 27, 2018, entitled “Immigration enforcement led to black employment.” Please explain to me why your ‘Comment Policy’ states, “You may not use language that abuses or discriminates on the basis of race,

religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability or nationality,” and yet you do not hold the same standards for your writers? Your ‘Comment Policy’ also empowers readers to report concerns over comments posted that may be inappropriate. Since Arlene Jones continually uses language rooted in racist and discriminatory rhetoric, where do we as readers report concerns over actual articles? Currently her latest post has two comments, with one of them specifically questioning her racist tone. Please consider editing her words if there is a discriminatory tone in her pieces.

If you all need help figuring out whether or not some of her words are micro-aggressions, then it would be my pleasure to help you all point them out so she can make her edits. My question is simple: If Arlene Jones is able to get away with such violent language in her pieces then does this mean Austin Weekly News supports her and/or her stance? Or does Austin Weekly News simply not care about the language in their pieces, but does care when comments are violent? — Alex Thompson CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

BIG WEEK I

‘It’s racist!’ is losing its meaning

am amused at how the term “racist” is now bandied about by everyone as the arbitrary response to any kind of critique or criticism. Black people who were once the primary folks to label others with that term now find that others and even blacks themselves are quick to bandy the word about black people. Let’s start with the definition of racist per my online dictionary: a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another. What does it mean to be racist? Well if we listen to many who spew the word about, white people are automatically racist and easily labeled with the word. Their skin color gives everyone the entire world over the right to call them that. I’m exaggerating in this regard, but it is especially convenient if the person doing the calling is unhappy with a particular situation. Black folks used to quickly claim that we can’t be racist because we have never had the powers to control and institutionalize it. But as the “browning of America” is happening, blacks are now eligible to be labeled with it too. Whites unhappy with any situation are quick to holler “racism” along with “reverse discrimination.” Then we also have the new “cultural appropriation” movement. That terminology, used by certain young black people, will harp on perceived abuse by others of a different peoples’ culture. But it is also often a onesided lament. For example, whites can’t wear dreadlocks but don’t anyone dare counter it by mentioning black women and weave. Bruno Mars doesn’t fit neatly into their perceived racial categories so it is his fault and not their categorization.

The terminology of Hispanics and Latinos is a made-up one that began in the 1970s. It doesn’t have a racial component to it (contrary to what some like to profess) as it comprises many different racial groups. Even within the group, there is controversy since Brazilians speak Portuguese and thus Hispanic (Spanish) doesn’t describe them, but Latino (Latin) does. Then add in Mexico which likes to remind everyone that it is a part of North America and not Latin America and thus Latino doesn’t apply to them. Yet no one calls them racist for not wanting to be called Latino. Racist is now morphing into a word that no longer has the meaning and nuance it once had. There was a time when the image of a George Wallace blocking the entrance to a school was the epitome of a racist. Or Bull Connors siccing the dogs on blacks marching for their civil rights. Or someone wearing a white robe and burning a cross. Today the word is used most often whenever someone is upset with a situation. Can’t get into a college and someone else did? Scream racism. Enter this country illegally, get caught and be on the deportation list? Scream racism. Born one gender and decide that you want to be the other gender and use that gender’s bathroom while still maintaining the genitalia you were born with and people say no? Scream racism. The first usage of the word racism occurred in 1902, then morphed into a noun (racist) in 1932 and as an adjective in 1938. For every phony racist charge, there is a legitimate one. The question is how much dilution of the term can occur before it becomes neutralized in our response to it?

HENRY FARMBY Life of service from page 1 than the education,” he recalled. “I wanted to help my mom out with my four brothers and seven sisters. Nowadays, though, I tell kids that education will help you more.” Farmby was transferred to the Robert LeFlore Post Office, 5001 W. Division, in 1978. He would stay at that post office for 38 years. “When you get a route, you’re on your own instead of working with the same people all day,” he said. “I enjoyed the freedom.” In addition to freedom, the work also brought sustenance. Farmby supported a family with his postal service career. His wife, Dorothy, was a homemaker who helped raise their five children — Clifford, an engineer; Tifanni, a teacher; Laticia, a student and photographer; Monez, a city employee; and Cornell, who followed in his father’s footsteps. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do but I saw my dad rear a family working for the post office, so I thought I’d try it for five years,” Cornell said. “That turned into 21 years. I was a letter carrier for 16 years and am now a supervisor at a post office in Arlington Heights.” Emmett Farrister, who is also a mail carrier, said that Farmby was an influence on him even before he started working with the

Postal Service. “Henry was the letter carrier on my street,” Farrister said. “Before I came to work for the post office, he gave me a lot of advice. Henry was quieter than, not as crazy as, some of us. He would help everybody. I’ve never known him to say no to anyone who asked. He is very good-hearted.” Farmby, who described himself as a people person, said that he’ll miss the family dynamic that characterized his job. “I miss my postal family,” said Farmby, who’s been off the job since December. “Not only my peers in blue, but all my customers. Some people call me ‘Pops or ‘Rev’. They tell me about the babies and about the funerals in their family. They became part of me.” Despite the positives, however, there were also the very present risks of delivering mail on the West Side — an aspect of the job that Dorothy said she won’t miss. She called her husband’s retirement “a new beginning for us, because we’re almost empty nesters. I was worried about him. There have been shootings and stealing on his route. But God brought him through.” And that’s a message that Farmby won’t stop delivering anytime soon. “I pray for those working in the postal service. We’re out there, daily fixtures of the community, just like the houses we deliver to,” he said. “I pray for the Lord to protect everyone. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be in service, one form or another. I’m still a servant.” CONTACT: bonni@barrelhousebonni.com

RECALLING THE DREAM: Community members, elected officials and city workers gather in front of the King statue on Mandela Road in Austin during an April 4 wreath-laying ceremony.

NEVER FORGET: The city workers were reminiscent of the Memphis sanitation workers whose 1968 strike brought King to that city. Not long before a planned march in support of the workers, he was killed on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel.
