N. Lawndale plan coming into form Plan coordinators say it could be done by 2018, hopeful city will approve By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter
In 2015, the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council announced the launch of a comprehensive plan for North Lawndale. Two years later, the plan is about halfway finished, with NLCCC executive members hoping to complete the plan by 2018. Once it’s completed, the plan will go before the City of Chicago for possible adoption. Dennis Deer, a member of NLCCC’s executive committee, said he’s optimistic that the City Council will adopt the plan, which he said has the full support of Ald. Michael Scot (24th) — whose ward covers most of North Lawndale. NLCCC was organized in May 2015 and first publicly announced the comprehensive plan process in September 2015. The group said that this plan, unlike conventional comprehensive plans, is unique because it is being developed by actual residents and stakeholders from the ground-up — not by policy experts and politicians from the top-down. Since its founding, the NLCCC has hosted a planning conference for residents, business owners and other community stakeholders to review the plan’s progress and to provide input. On June 3, NLCCC hosted its second annual conference at DRW College Prep, 931 S. Homan Ave. in North Lawndale. At Last Saturday’s event, NLCCC members touted a range of community projSee N. West Side students lead a peace march DRW College Prep seniors coordinated the event, designed to spotlight positivity By IGOR STUDENKOV Contributing Reporter
Every year, seniors at DRW College Prep, a charter high school located at 931 S. Homan Ave. in North Lawndale, organize an event for to commemorate graduation. This year, they chose to do a peace march. The students who organized the event said they wanted to do something positive and that would counter the violence that virtually all of them have been affected by. The march was supported by the Community
Christian Alternative Academy in North Lawndale, Ald. Michael Scott (24th) and officers from the Chicago Police Department’s 11th District. The route for the May 26 march went from the school itself to Leo Roscoe Boler Park, 3601 W. Arthington St. After the march, students stayed in the park for about an hour, with some coming up to the stage to dance, sing and recite poetry. In the end, the organizers said that they were glad the march happened without incident and that they hoped that even more
people will be involved next year. The idea for the march came from two seniors – Lynnitanne Riley and Jocelyn Rodriguez. Both took part in the school’s Peer Mediators program. Since the start of 2017, the school lost three students to violence. Rodriguez said her uncle was killed when he was 10. “We just want students to feel safe again,” Riley said. Marian L. Thomas, 45, channels her grandparents During a recent book signing held at AfriWare Books in suburban Maywood, novelist Marian L. Thomas, 45, discussed her new novel, I Believe in Butterflies — a book that explores how three women deal with love and race. Thomas said that she got the inspiration for one of those fictional women, the 76-year-old Emma Lee Baker, from her two grandmothers. The author spoke briefly about her maternal grandmother, who lived in Oak Park for more than 50 years and worked as a nurse for Mt. Sinai Hospital in North Lawndale. Thomas lived with her grandparents for a long time before moving to Atlanta in 1988. My mother’s mother was really into education. She was very sharp. She was a nurse at Mt. Sinai Hospital her whole career. She was always very direct and to the point. She always had an opinion and knew what she wanted. I combined all of those things into the character of Emma. My grandfather was a baker. Both he and my grandmother knew the value of a dollar and believed in saving. When they moved to Oak Park, they purchased their home for cash. They were one of only two families on their block. A black doctor lived across the street from us.
My grandparents drove Cadillacs that they paid for. One was called Blue Thunder [laughing]. There was a red one before that one. But they would drive each car until it just about fell apart. We don’t do that today, but that was them. They paid cash for everything. They didn’t believe in credit cards. In the book, Emma Lee Baker talks about how her husband was able to afford the home she still lives in and how it was unheard of for African Americans to own a home. Emma is how my grandparents were.

After cold start, Chicago Ave. thrive zone heating up
Eleven businesses have filed applications for grants earmarked for the corridor By XUEER ZHANG AustinTalks
Letrusia May already owns four multiunit buildings in Austin, but she is planning to purchase another property, this one on Chicago Avenue, for her jewelry boutique. The 41-year-old businesswoman, who was born and raised in Austin, said she made the decision soon after the city promised to cover 75 percent of the startup costs for businesses opened along Chicago Avenue, which has been dubbed the Soul City Corridor by some residents and community leaders. It’s one of eight new retail thrive zones established in Chicago’s less-developed communities. The zones, most of which are located on the South Side, are designed to give additional incentives to existing and prospective businesses in areas that need more economic investment. “It’s going to be a business and entertainment district,” said May, who was among more than 20 business owners and local resi-

Crawford said both AAABNA and the city had put a lot of effort into the retail thrive zone, urging residents and property owners to take advantage of this hard-earned opportunity. “Eighty-five percent of the disposable income of Austin goes to Oak Park because the services are not here,” Crawford said. “All of our police eat in Oak Park,” he said. “So the sirens go off (when they’re) on Harlem, and they have to get all the way to Cicero to do their job. But you can’t knock them because we don’t have anything here for them.” The businessman said the lack of sit-in restaurants can barely meet Austin residents’ and employees’ need for meal-time socializing. “Everybody doesn’t just want mild sauce, Italian beef and all those quick food,” Crawford said. “You gotta be able to sit down, have a meal in a restaurant. We don’t have sit-down restaurants, so that doesn’t allow us to socialize and to get to know each other. It’s frustrating.” Austin is a food desert with close to 100,000 people while Oak Park has half the population and eight grocery stores, Crawford said. Bernard Lilly, 48, has lived in Austin for 17 years. He said there are more businesses and community organizations in Austin now than in the past. CONTACT: austintalks.org@gmail.com

N. LAWNDALE PLAN Full of ideas from page 1 ects and events that they’ve launched and laid out some of the recommendations that could make their way into the final comprehensive plan. Sheila McNary, a member of NLCCC’s executive committee and head of its art and culture sub-committee, touted the numerous community events — such as a creative careers summit, the North Lawndale Art and Culture Festival and a housing fair — that the organization developed. She also said that NLCC has worked with the Local Initiates Support Corporation to distribute $30,000 worth of grants to different North Lawndale organizations. Not long after the group formally announced the planning process, NLCCC successfully applied for a grant to receive technical assistance from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency of Panning. Based on a recommendation from CMAP, the group’s numerous sub-committees focused on a variety of areas where potential short-term improvements could be made. In addition, a CMAP report distributed to conference attendees referenced strategies for addressing the issues uncovered in the process. In the area of transportation, the report called for improving Ogden Avenue, expanding Blue Line service, improving bus shelters, conducting more education and outreach, encouraging biking and creating a neighborhoodwide free Wi-Fi network. Among housing recommendations, the report calls for working with local lenders to offer programs to help first-time homebuyers, setting up grants and loans to improve the existing housing stock and setting up ways to give the community a greater voice in the neighborhood’s housing development. In the area of public safety, the report recommended improving building code enforcement, building awareness about North Lawndale Restorative Justice Hub, partnering with the Chicago Police Department to improve community relations and implementing restorative justice practices for the young people, improving housing options for ex-offenders, and mitigating crime through environmental design initiatives. For youth education and recreation, the CMAP report suggested identifying community organization that could do more to help young people get GEDs, expanding outreach to high school students to get a better sense of the major issues they face, and coordinating with local businesses and employment organizations to improve job opportunities for the young people. In the areas of health and wellness, the CMAP suggested bringing more grocery stores into North Lawndale, enacting poli-
cies that limit fast food restaurants and convenience stores, leveraging community gardens to increase access to healthy foods and figuring out ways to build on existing recreational opportunities. The CMAP report also made numerous recommendations in the areas of economic and workforce development, such as creating more tax incentives to hire local residents, creating incentives to attract businesses to North Lawndale, installing more transit-orientated development around the Blue and Pink line ‘L’ stations, and partnering with area organizations to help neighborhood residents access manufacturing jobs in the area. The attendances were then asked to take part in one of seven “breakout” groups that corresponded to topic areas in the report. In each group, members were asked to propose ideas and strategies for improving the community, and they then collectively voted for top three or four ideas that they felt were most promising. During break-out sessions, community members offered their own expertise and insight for NLCCC to incorporate into the comprehensive plan. Brenda Palms Barber, head of the North Lawndale Employment Network and NLCCC’s workforce development sub-committee chair,

CHIMING IN: Community members lay out some of their ideas during the June 3 planning conference hosted by NLCCC. said that although manufacturing is a major source of income in North Lawndale, the community’s future is in the fields of medicine, transportation and logistics. Barber added that the community’s proximity to Eisenhower Expressway, as well as the fact that it has extensive freight railroad infrastructure, are major assets. Barber said that more should be done to simply secure more good-paying union jobs for residents. Rodney Brown, who chairs the NLCC Economic Development sub-committee, said that unless there is a PR campaign to improve the neighborhood’s image, North Lawndale will always have trouble attracting businesses. Among the many ideas that were tossed out, the four that received the most votes from those in attendance were the ideas to enhance job-training in the medical field, to create a Bloomingdales Trail-style greenway connecting Douglas Park to other major West Side park, to increase awareness of existing resources for businesses and to make the neighborhood a tourism destination. EMPOWERED: Students at DRW College Prep and throughout the West Side participate in a May 26 peace march, whose route went from Leo Roscoe Boler Park to 3601 W. Arthington. After the march, students enjoyed musical and spoken word performances.

PEACE MARCH
Promoting positivity from page 1 DRW peer mediators, said that the mediators originally planned a simple peace walk, but it gradually evolved into a march and a rally. Riley said it took about five months to bring the event together. The peace mediators did most of the work, with different students
taking on different tasks. Rodriguez, for example, worked social media outreach and helped create posts. The students took advantage of neighborhood resources. The School of the Art Institute’s Homan Square art and design programs operate out of Nichols Tower, which is located across the street from the prep school. Jaclyn Jacunski, the program coordinator, said that the students reached out for support. She said that students were given supplies, materials and advice to help them design march signs.
“It was cool that the students felt that kind of leadership and that we could open our doors and work together,” Jacunski said. “They did a good job and the signs looked great.” The march began with an assembly. U.S. Representative Robin Kelly (D-2nd), who met with the peer mediators beforehand, said that she was impressed with what the students did. “You inspire me,” she said. “You let me know that I’m doing the right thing: fighting for peace in Congress. We need you to
remind us [politicians] why we were elected on the local level, county level or, like me, the federal level. We are losing so many young people. We got to put our heads together and figure out how to stop it.” Marcys Whittlesey, DRW Prep’s Assistant Principal, said that, for all of the problems in communities like North Lawndale, good things happen, too. This march, he said, is one of them. “[We need to] give the city a positive view of our community,” he said, adding that the march was also a way to honor and remember friends and family members who perished due to gun violence. Brio Williams said that the violence didn’t affect him personally until last year, when he lost his cousin. He said that talking about resolving violence isn’t going to cut it. There has to be action. “It’s OK to be successful, but when you make it, then what?” Williams asked. “If you had the power to make a change, would you do it? You get that power. Show me what you can do.” In his spoken word piece, Dashawn Hanes decried racism, saying that, no matter what he did, he is still treated like a criminal. “Why did you have to deceive me into thinking that I’m free in this land of liberty?” he cried out. “Why do you have me? Why am I the enemy?” Hanes’ piece ended on a defiant note. He said that, while society expects him to end up in prison, the only place he was going away to was college. Cyann McQueen, a CCA junior and North Lawndale resident, said she found the march “empowering,” “fun” and “heartfelt.” “I feel really happy and proud of our students, and really excited that people came together,” Jackson said. “[I] hope it’s the start of more events like this, so we can bring peace and positivity to the neighborhood.” CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com

Still on the Move on the West Side of Chicago The Fathers Who Care Youth Council and the West Garfield Park Community Stakeholders are again on the move to reduce underage drinking, substance abuse and senseless violence on the West Side of Chicago. We believe in the following attributes: 1. Harmony - We have learned to fly the air like birds and swim the sea like fish, but we have not just learned the simple art of living together as brothers and sisters... Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2. Transformation - We must be the change we want to see in the world and then the world will see the change it wants to see in us... Institute of Awareness 3. Power of Love - Love is the only cement that can hold this broken community together. When I am commanded to love, I am commanded to restore community... Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 4. Peace - If there is to be peace in the world, there must be peace in the nations, if there is to be peace in the nations, there must be peace in the cities, if there is to be peace in the cities, there must be peace between neighborhoods, if there is to be peace between neighborhoods, there must be peace in the home, if there is to be peace in the home, there must be peace in the heart... Institute on Awareness 5. Supremacy of God - Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 6. Strength - Is the ability to withstand. Real strength is not just a condition of one’s muscle, but a tenderness in one’s spirit... Institute on Awareness Let’s become a part of the solution instead of continuing to become a part of the problem. Each One - Teach One. We are committed to promoting a safe, healthy and drug free community, via developing and implementing social and environmental changes on the West Side of Chicago. Join the movement and let’s collectively save our children and our communities. For more information about Fathers Who Care and the West Garfield Park Community Stakeholders, please contact Rev. Longtime ABC Bank employees retire rich with memories
Rosie Moses and Mary Cullitin worked at the bank for over four decades
CASHING OUT: Bernard Clay gives flowers to Rosie Moses, top, and Mary Cullitin, below, last Thursday, one day before the last day of their working lives. The women have worked at ABC Bank in Austin for over four decades. The bank’s Lake Street branch recently relocated to North Avenue.
By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor
When the Austin branch of ABC Bank moved from its longtime location at 5645 W. Lake St. to its new location at 6400 W. North Ave. last week, it left a world in its wake — namely that of Rosie Moses and Mary Cullitin, both of whom retired last week after working at the bank for more than 40 years. “When I started here, baby, they didn’t have these,” Moses said, pointing to a computer that was nearby. “They had these great, big old adding machines.” Moses came to Austin from Gary, IN (by way of her native Kosciusko, Mississippi) in 1971 — the year she got a job at ABC. She started in the bookkeeping department before transitioning to the bank’s savings and checking departments. For the last three year’s, Moses said, she’s been a receptionist. “She knows at least 1,000 people by their first names,” said Bernard Clay, a good friend, who had dropped off some flowers for Moses and Cullitin last Thursday, the day before the last day of their working lives. Cullitin was busy while Moses chatted during a brief interview, posed for cellphone photos and exchanged contact information with patron Lucille Webster, who wasn’t ready to see Moses leave. “I’ve been coming here for 10 years,” Webster said. “I met Rosie at Edna’s restaurant. She came there to recruit some people for the bank. That’s how I met her. She’s a very nice lady. I love her to death. We’re going to keep in contact.” Moses said she’s worked under five different bank presidents, before naming them on one hand. Colette Loesher, ABC Bank’s current president and CEO, was effusive in her

praise of the two women. “They are two of our most valuable employees,” she said during a phone interview on Friday. “They represent everything the bank represents. Although I’m sorry to see them go, they’ve earned their retirement. I wish them all the best.” Loesher said that, while Moses and Cullitin are among the bank’s longest tenured workers, it’s common for ABC employees to stay for the long haul. Founded in 1891, ABC Bank may be the oldest chartered bank in Cook County. “We have very little turnover,” she said. “A lot of our employees have been here for over 15 years. I’d guess maybe more than half.” After four decades working, Moses is ready for the next stage of her life. She has grandchildren to dote on, siblings to visit. And after nearly a decade away, she’ll finally be able to return to Kosciusko — the place where her life began. CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com
PCC Austin garden springs back into season
Residents can buy produce from the garden from now until October 25 By AustinTalks Partner
The PCC Austin Farm Stand began selling low-priced, organically grown produce in Austin on June 6. This is the seventh consecutive year the garden has existed. The fresh vegetables are harvested locally from the PCC Austin Farm. Visitors can
choose among a variety of seasonal items, including lettuce, scallions, garlic, kale, and mustard and collard greens. This summer, the farm stand will be open every Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., as well as the third Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., until October 25. Located at 330 N. Lotus Ave., the stand accepts various payment methods, including cash, credit/debit, LINK, Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers, and Women, Infants and Children (WIC) farmers’ market coupons. Double value incentives are available for LINK and WIC purchases. In partnership with the Chicago Botanic
Garden, PCC Community Wellness Center established the PCC Austin Farm and Farm Stand in 2015 to increase access to fresh produce for Austin residents. PCC hopes that Austin residents will eat more fruits and vegetables, improving their overall health and reducing the risk for chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The farm is situated across from PCC Austin Family Health Center, which provides primary care and integrated behavioral health and oral health care, among other services. To help Austin residents increase their fruit and vegetable intake, the farm stand
offers healthy recipes that use ingredients from the farm. Free children’s books also are available for customers and visitors. “Spring has sprung, and the PCC Austin Farm has kicked off another busy season hosting various events, including three farming workshops, an On the Table conversation, Lions Club volunteers, and a holistic Women and Herbs self-care workshop,” said Lucy Flores, community outreach health education manager. “The work we do at the farm is so important and amazing; it nurtures families and our community in many ways,” she said. Crime and the Greater Westside
I
hadn’t planned on writing anymore about the union of Chicago and Oak Park into an area called the “Greater Westside.” However, over the Memorial Day weekend, we had a crime so heinous it could have been right out of a “B” movie. Sixteen-year-old Damon Price died because he chose the wrong person to rob at the Madison and Austin branch of the US Bank in Oak Park. The 24-year-old victim was licensed and carrying a concealed weapon. Damon had a weapon, too. There was a shootout and Damon took a bullet to the chest. Instead of rushing him to a hospital, reports from some very reliable sources say his accomplice dropped him off in front of his house. Damon was subsequently taken to Stroger Hospital (and all the published reports say they are investigating how he got there) where he was ultimately pronounced dead. Now I enjoy knowing that the bad guy got his just desserts like anyone else. But Damon’s death wasn’t funny. He was a kid in a man’s body. Sadly, his mind and behavior at 16 years old was already highly focused on criminal activity. The question that must be asked and answered is: How and why are we failing our children? I don’t need printed statistics to see that gun crimes are involving younger and younger children. A 16-year-old with a weapon who has had no training/skills on how to use it, along with an immature mind, is a disaster in the making. One way to begin to tackle the problem is to teach our young people their family history. They may know grandma and grandpa, but how many know the name of the relative who left the South to journey North? With young men, the very essence that makes them male, the Y chromosome, is passed to them unchanged from their fathers. Their grandfather got his from his father. Go back 10 more generations and that Y chromosome remains the same. Yet many of our young males, as well as their fathers, don’t know their family history.
So what other way can we begin to establish pride in our young men? Unlike others, we can’t easily trace our ancestors back several hundred years. If there was a coat of arms or family crest that existed to identify the tribe from which they emanated, it has been lost. But I have an idea that can counter the word “forever,” which should have ended the previous sentence. There have been men since the beginning of time, whose exploits can make any man proud and have them say, “That could’ve been my relative!” Men like Shaka Zulu, Hannibal, Nat Turner, Robert Smalls, Joseph Cinque, Thurgood Marshall, Bob Marley, Rev. Dr. Martin L. King Jr., Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad, Muhammad Ali, John H. Johnson, and a host of others too numerous to mention. I would have each of the young men pick a famous black person whose ideology best matches the way they would carry themselves in their life from this day forward. For example, if they picked the great orator Frederick Douglass as their family crest, they would speak out against injustice while acknowledging his famous quote, “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Choosing someone like Malcolm X would be acknowledging his saying that, “To have once been a criminal is no disgrace. To remain a criminal is the disgrace.” Whomever they choose, the goal is to connect them to the positivity of that individual as opposed to aligning themselves with the negativity that has become so prevalent. Damon Price’s death underscores one of the biggest challenges we face in trying to become one united area. His potential has been lost forever and he represents many others whose decisions to choose the criminal life can mean their deaths as well. How we as a community begin from this day forward to address the issue is paramount to our becoming greater in more ways than one.
