Community leaders march on City Hall A group of elected officials and clergymen demand city address violence By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

A large group of elected officials, pastors, activists and residents converged outside of the doors of City Hall on June 27 for a demonstration held “to demand fair treatment from government,” according to Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin (1st), who joined the contingent. “As the violence in Chicago continues to rage, too many are feeling hopeless,” Boykin stated. “Those same people, in most cases, face higher taxes, pay more for food, insurance, gas, credit and generally face more difficult life road blocks than those who have been blessed with more.” More specifically, the demonstrators urged lawmakers to support legislation that addresses the crises happening across the predominantly black and Hispanic West and South Sides Rev. Ira Acree, the pastor of Greater St. John Bible Church in Austin and cochairman of the Leaders Network — a faith-based social justice organization— specifically urged lawmakers to support House Bill 4008, which would appropriate emergency funding for violence preSee MARCH on page 6

ALL BUT THE SCHOOL: Workers in the process of demolishing St. Angela Parish building. The church closed in 2005, but the school still lives on. Once razed, the church, convent and rectory will give way to more open space to be utilized by the school.

St. Angela undergoes demolition

The Austin church will be leveled to make room for students By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

When St. Angela Parish in Austin closed in May 2005, the hulking neo-gothic building at the corner of Massasoit and Potomac was adroitly disemboweled — the statues and

shrines made from plain Carrara marble, gold furnishings and stained glass panes once housed under the church’s 65-foot vaulted ceiling now give life to Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church in Niles. This summer, officials with St. Angela School, which has managed to flourish despite the church’s demise, and the Archdiocese of Chicago have decided to demolish what remains of the deteriorating parish campus, which includes three buildings that were built between 1949 and 1951: a church, convent and rectory.

The buildings, school officials said, are relatively new compared to other Catholic parishes in Chicago, most of which were built in the early 1900s. “This is really one of the last of its kind,” said Lynn Fredrick, St. Angela’s director of advancement. “It was a beautiful church.” And grand. “The first thing that grabbed your senses were the windows and their strikingly vivid colors,” notes an auction ad book from a 2009

ST. ANGELA One of a kind from page 1 brunch the school hosted. “They were made up of thousands of small pieces of imported antique glass assembled by lead jointing.” The high altar was made of “brightly colored foreign marble, highlighted with rare Florentine mosaic.” The windows, “30 feet high and 14 feet wide, were the largest windows ever made by the celebrated firm of Giannini & Hilgart, under the personal supervision of Mr. Fred Hilgart.” After the parish closed, however, the buildings gradually descended into a state of disrepair. “The buildings were becoming dangerous and they were a financial drain on the school and the archdiocese,” said Fredrick, who added that the bulk of the maintenance costs for the buildings were related to high water bills exacerbated by plumbing problems. The massive open space that will result after the rubble is cleared will give the school’s nearly 300 students, preschool to eighth grade, more room to play and roam. Currently, the only outdoor recreational area the students have is a small playground sandwiched between the church and the school building, which is more suitable for little kids. “We’ve been talking to landscape architects who will help us design this space to

Sister Maryellen Callahan, RSM, the school’s president, said the school has become a community among families and students, most of whom aren’t Catholic. “The parents have kept it going,” Sr. Callahan said. “They want a good education for their children and they’re willing to pay for it and come and cooperate with us and work with us so their children can be successful.” David Jordan, who graduated from St. Angela’s in 1974, described in the 1994 auction ad book how the parish helped to dissolve the geographical and political boundaries separating Oak Park and Austin, which at that time was undergoing swift demographic and economic change. “St. Angela Parish itself reached into suburban Oak Park, as parish boundaries followed their own lines, not those containing governmental jurisdictions or secular neighborhoods,” Jordan wrote. “When I was a kid, whenever anyone asked me what part of Chicago I hailed from, I said, ‘St. Angela’s,’ not ‘North Austin,’ the secular name for the area surrounding my home, which was a brick two-flat on the 1800 block of North Mason Avenue,” he added. Fredrick, who lives in Oak Park, said she hopes the school can become the same kind of boundary-dissolving agent that the church was for close to a century before it closed. “A stronger Austin makes a stronger Oak Park,” Fredrick said. “People should be aware that this is going on.” CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

Thousands turn out for ‘summer of opportunity’ The event was spearheaded by the nonprofit BUILD By AustinTalks Partner

It’s no secret that the risk of violence grows the minute the last CPS school bell rings. On June 23, an estimated 3,000 youth, families and community member marched to Columbus Park to launch “Summer of Opportunity” – a full summer of positive activities for youth in Austin and other West Side neighborhoods. Last week’s Summer of Opportunity kickoff was designed as both a community building celebration and a practical way to connect young people with positive activities, summer jobs, and resources for a safe and successful summer. The event was spearheaded by BUILD, a 48-year-old, not-for-profit community-based organization focused on violence intervention and youth development on Chicago’s West and South sides. Turnout was initially projected at 1,000 to 1,500, but quickly grew after more than a thousand people showed up for the peace march an hour before the celebration in Columbus Park, where 65 organizations had set up information tables and activities. “Summer of Opportunity goes beyond ‘put the guns down.’ We also have to change the story about neighborhoods like Austin,” said Adam M. Alonso, BUILD’s executive director. “What better way than to kick off the

summer than for families and kids to enjoy spending time together and get plugged into summer opportunities. It shows the world that good things happen, even in communities that are struggling.” Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin said, “There is no more important goal than to make sure there is peace in all communities. This event and others like it are important as we work toward the crucial mission of keeping all people safe.” The planning committee included: Ald. Chris Taliaferro, the American Red Cross, Austin Coming Together, Breakthru Beverage, BUILD, By the Hand Club, Chicago Public Library, Chicago Police Department, Commissioner Boykin, Illinois State Treasurer’s office, Institute for Non-Violence Chicago, KRA, Marillac St. Vincent, Pepsico, Project Exploration, St. Joseph Services, Westside Health Authority and Youth Outreach Services. “From the moment we walked in the door, it was overwhelming how invested every stakeholder was in the future of these children,” said Danny Wirtz, vice chair of lead sponsor Breakthru Beverage, which provided funding, logistics and over 200 employee volunteers. Organizers are now launching a full range of summer activities, and plans are in the works for next year’s Summer of Opportunity, which BUILD envisions growing into a major citywide event like the Bud Billiken Parade. West Side teen activist isn’t too young to show respect

Janeicia Williams says young people shouldn’t dismiss the old guard By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Janeicia Williams, 18, of Austin, isn’t one of those millennials who questions the relevancy of age-old African American institutions or whose eyes glaze over if you ask her what the acronym NAACP stands for. She knows. She’s in it. Williams, who recently graduated from Lane Tech College Prep near the top of her class, is president of the West Side Branch NAACP (whose letters stand for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). She thought about going to Harvard, Syracuse and Georgetown before settling on what writer Ta-Nehisi Coates simply calls the “Mecca” and describes it this way: “The Mecca is a machine, crafted to capture and concentrate the dark energy of all African peoples and inject it directly into the student body. The Mecca derives its power from the heritage of Howard University, which in Jim Crow days enjoyed a near-monopoly on black talent.” Coates calls Howard University in Washington D.C., “the only truly comprehensive black university and one of the major engineers of change in our society.” Williams’ reason for bypassing those elite “white” universities to attend the Mecca is similar to Coates’ and is as old as the uni-

Acree said that he was prompted to participate in last week’s action after meeting with a high school freshmen from Austin whom he’s mentoring. “It broke my heart to hear this smart, young lady, with an impressive academic record, tell me she is not looking forward to the summer because she feels she will be bored to death as a result of being too scared to go outside,” Acree stated in the Facebook post. “This is no way for a 14-year-old to spend her summer.” Acree referenced a violence summit held in May that was co-hosted by the New York Times and the University of Chicago Crime Lab. versity itself — so is her reason for being involved in the NAACP and her articulate defense of why many people who dismiss Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. probably don’t know a fraction of what he is still doing. “I applied to Howard not knowing that it would be a sure option for me,” Williams said in a recent phone interview. “But then I looked into the school and saw the culture and the things that an HBCU [Historically Black College and University] had to offer, which a traditionally white institution wouldn’t. Going to an HBCU forms a better community and gives you a better definition of what it means to be not just an exceptional black student, but an exceptional student, period.” Williams’ response to anyone who may consider the NAACP irrelevant or outmoded is also age-old. The biggest and oldest civil rights organization in the country, she says, never really went anywhere. “There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that the NAACP does that people don’t always get to hear about,” said Williams, noting the organization’s numerous branches and outgrowths, such as an annual talent and academic competition called ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics), which it holds each year for exceptional black high school students across the country. Williams said her own work with the West Side Branch’s youth council often flies under the radar — from talent shows the group has organized to its work helping ex-offenders. “Media outlets aren’t always the first to report on town hall meetings held to push a bill to protect housing or to help ex-offend-

lence.html?_r=0. Experts in different specialties, journalists and community leaders spoke about ways to reduce the unprecedented level of crime in Chicago. Crime Lab Director Jens Ludwig called the spike in gun violence “a completely, unexpected, dramatic increase” that happened “almost instantaneously.” The root causes of the violence are familiar, and they can seem intractable: poverty, segregation, subpar education, distrust of the police,” New York Times reporter Mitch Smith wrote. “The relationship between community and law enforcement, which is an absolutely necessary component to get to solutions, has been fractured,” said Kim Foxx, the Cook County state’s attorney. Acree said that “we need all hands on deck to stem the violence and provide communities the help they need.” The clergyman added that “unless there is a significant investment in job creation, the epidemic of gun violence and the depreciation of the quality of life for black Chicagoans will not only continue, but it’ll get worse.” CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

ers secure jobs. Those things aren’t properly publicized,” she said. “Programs like ACT-SO are building-block programs that people just don’t talk about often, but we’re promoting black excellence and teaching people their history so they know where they came from. NAACP lawyers worked on the Trayvon Martin case. Things like that aren’t always showcased.” Williams’ extracurricular activity both at Lane Tech and outside of school, is as extensive as the terms and conditions manual for an iPhone — Black Student Association, National Honor Society, Louder Than A Bomb (a poetry team that competes in a prestigious competition of the same name), Lady Capulet in Romeo and Juliet, basketball team. She’s a modern girl. But she has an oldfashioned respect for venerable civil rights organizations and activists like Jackson, whose PUSH Excel Oratorical Competition allowed her opportunities she never imagined were available. “Through that program, I’ve memorized speeches and recited them in front of corporate executives, lawyers, judges, all kinds of city leaders,” she said. “I also got to do a commercial on NBC through working with that program.” After performing during one of Jackson’s international Saturday broadcasts, Williams said, a woman called her to give her a $1,000 scholarship. An aspiring civil rights attorney (who can also see herself making laws in a legislative body), Williams said that, far from distancing legacy institutions and civil rights organizations, young people should leverage them to their advantage. This knowledge comes by birthright. Wil-

Janeicia Williams liams’ mother, well-known West Side community organizer Deborah Williams, has relationships with (or is at least one degree separated from) just about every activist and organizing entity on the West Side and has volunteered or done paid organizing work for many local, state and national campaigns, including Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton’s. If the mother has her way, her daughter will be opening an Austin campaign office during her own presidential run — a prospect that the younger Williams downplays. Right now, she said, she’s just focused on preparing for her journey to the Mecca. CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

Local churches give youth summer jobs

Teens from Austin were among those employed through job program started by suburban pastors By MICHAEL ROMAIN Editor

Roughly two dozen began work this summer as part of a program initiated a year ago by the Proviso Township Ministerial Alliance (PTMAN), a large network of suburban churches and clergy members. The four-week work program, designed for young people ages 13 to 16, matches local students from all over the Chicago and the western suburbs, including a few teenagers from the West Side. Last year, said Min. Albert Johnson, PTMAN’s outreach coordinator, the program outdid expectations. During an orientation session and monthly PTMAN breakfast meeting held on June 10 at Freedom Baptist Church in Hillside, Johnson shared the story of Darnyce Springfield, who worked for the summer at Marcus Wright Dental in Maywood. “They were so impressed with this young lady that they decided to bring her on permanently,” Johnson told the teenagers as they gathered inside of Freedom Baptist’s cavernous sanctuary (a converted movie theater). More than 10 suburban employers, including Marcus Wright, Triton College, the Maywood Park District and Kathy’s Cafe, have agreed to temporarily employ the youth for four weeks — four hours a day and four days a week — at roughly $8 an hour. Johnson referred to the setup as the 4-4-4 plan. The money to pay the young people, Johnson said, comes from PTMAN’s member churches and local entities that pledge to donate different amounts. One church in Naperville even

hosted a benefit concert for the program. The program is the brainchild of PTMAN’s chairman, Bishop Dr. Reginald Saffo, the pastor of United Faith M.B. Church and head of United Faith Christian Institute Bible College, both located in Maywood. During an interview last year about the employment program, Saffo said that he wanted to demonstrate that local institutions, particularly churches, could drive the local economy in their own ways, independent of government funding. “A lack of government funding should never preclude our children from having a safe and productive summer,” he said. “We felt that it was our moral obligation to provide our youth with this experience. Churches that have an understanding of their role in community are very supportive and positive about these kinds of projects.” During the June 10 meeting, Saffo said that the goal of the program is to do more than provide young people with jobs. He said he hopes the program can help teenagers find what it is that fulfills them and gives them purpose. Most of the teenagers sat silently through the orientation process, which included some of the program’s coordinators briefing them on workplace etiquette (the need to come on time and to dress properly, among other protocols). The teenagers came from Maywood, Bellwood, Chicago and as far away as DuPage County. When asked how they hoped the program will benefit them during the orientation’s first hour, most responded that a summer job would keep them busy and occupied. “We have many partners looking forward to meeting you all,” said Johnson before referencing Springfield’s success story. “This is an excellent opportunity to go out and do what your best because you never know the possibilities.” CONTACT: michael@austinweeklynews.com

Immigrants shouldn’t get special status

mmigration to this country has never been a situation that has benefitted the descendants of enslaved Africans. We are the only group whose presence in this country did not take place in a voluntary manner. Legal immigration brought in a specific numbers of European immigrants, and they fought to take their place at the table known as America. White skin became the unifying characteristic, even though both the Irish and the Italians (especially Sicilians) had to overcome ethnic stereotypes. With other racial/ethnic groups, their numbers were so small, they weren’t deemed as significant. All of that changed as significant numbers of people of Hispanic origin began to stake a claim in this country over the past 30 years. Whereas in the past many of them had come in as “migrant farm workers,” they soon learned if they just stayed, no one would do or say anything

about it. Add Ronald Reagan’s amnesty deal back in 1986, and the floodgates opened as millions of folks began entering this country illegally in hopes of forcing another amnesty. The number of people here has grown so quickly, and with so many, that as a collective group, Hispanics are now America’s largest “minority.” Chicago became a “sanctuary city” back in 1985 under then-mayor Harold Washington. Every subsequent mayor has affirmed that designation with the current mayor bending over backwards to doubly embrace it. President Trump had barely been in office for two weeks when Emanuel declared that Chicago would remain a sanctuary city. Later, Emmanuel hosted a dinner at his house and even his wife’s name, which is rarely mentioned in the press, was front and center as they hosted a tableful of young illegal aliens. If a picture paints a thousand words,

ARLENE JONES

then the message from Rahm is clear: He’ll take an endorsement from Obama to get the black vote, but he is staking his future on those who cannot vote and their corresponding parents. The label “American” doesn’t automatically mean that one is white, blonde, and has blue eyes. Neither does being Hispanic mean that one has brown skin because of Native American ancestry. There are millions of white Hispanics who are taking advantage of that “minority” label and often at black folks’ expense. So I began to wonder. Why are those who have come to this country legally or illegally entitled to any special consideration? Why are they even considered a minority group? They have no historical basis on which to base their claim. And even if their numbers collectively make them a large group, why are they considered anything other than just another group like the Irish, Italians or Poles? It was a radio interview with a local Hispanic activist that made me begin to question why. The man proudly told of how his parents came here illegally. He was born

here and he was fighting for Hispanics’ fair share of the pie. As the interview went on, he was asked about why districts belonging to Mike Madigan and Ed Burke, which are predominately Hispanic, continue to elect those two to office as opposed to putting a Hispanic in the same position. His response was telling. He basically said there was no need to replace a white person who was bringing them home the bacon. I also thought I heard an undertone that was saying that blacks put blacks in position and still we don’t get anything. Hispanics, on the other hand, aren’t going down that same road. They are being handed their share of the pie even at black folks’ expense. As we celebrate July 4th knowing that in 1776 our ancestors were enslaved and would not see freedom for 87 more years (89 if they were in Texas), let us focus on how we can best make this country work for us. We need to specifically voice that no one who enters this country after 1865 should become a minority in front of us. They are just immigrants and should be treated like any other group.

A section of Chicago Avenue, between Kostner and Keystone Avenues, will allow for both industrial and commercial uses after the Chicago City Council approved an ordinance on June 28. Previously, that portion of Chicago Avenue had been dedicated strictly to industrial use. The ordinance was introduced by Ald. Emma Mitts (37th), whose ward encompasses the area. During a recent interview, Mitts said that she was simply responding to economic realities and local demand. While the area has historically been industrial, she said, many of the companies that have utilized the area for industrial purposes have closed down over the years. Meanwhile, Mitts added, West Humboldt Park residents have been requesting that her office help bring in more commercial development. The new zoning classification, which is C3-1, would provide more redevelopment opportunities without closing the door on manufacturing altogether, the alderman explained. Mitts has supported manufacturing in her ward in the past. According to the Chicago City Clerk’s legislative records, over the past seven years, Mitts supported a total of two applications for Class 6(b) property tax classification. The incentive-based classification aims to attract industrial businesses by temporarily lowering their tax rates. More recently, Mitts expressed support for the Industrial Growth Zones program, a joint county-city program that seeks to encourage industrial businesses in areas that haven’t seen much investment by simplifying the process of applying for incentives and connecting interested businesses to local resources. The stretch of Chicago Avenue that Mitts wanted falls within the Northwest Industrial Corridor growth zone. In a statement, Mitts said that these blocks have seen better days, especially on the south side of the street.

“Several years ago, there were several manufacturing businesses in the area, but they’ve all gone now, victims of a rapidly changing economy,” she stated. “It’s empty and somewhat blighted. A former ice cream company, was once located along that strip, but it too has vacated the area.” At the same time, Mitts said that the community has been asking her to encourage for more retail. The previous zoning was too restrictive for that. “An urban farming collaborative called Metropolitan Farms is looking to open in the area, providing an ongoing farmers market offering fresh produce and other locally-sourced healthy food items, but were prohibited from doing so [under the current zoning].” Mitts stated. “Given the paucity of grocery and other retail stores in the area, it seems a good fit, and more important — my community is actively supporting opportunities for more convenient, quality goods and services from small and mid-sized entities to locate along this heavily traveled business corridor,” she said. “Now, [residents] are forced to go to other communities for the basics. I’m trying to change this dynamic.” “Black people need jobs, and I’m glad [Mitts] sees the need to keep it a manufacturing district,” said activist George Blakemore. “Hopefully, with the help of this body, more manufacturing will move in this area and our people will be able to work.” Mitts described the rezoning as a step toward greater city-wide equity. “I’m always available to work with my community to create new opportunities for economic empowerment,” she stated. “I firmly believe that if we are looking to reach our goal to be a unified city and one Chicago, then we need to employ innovative solutions designed to spread investment in all of our city neighborhoods. This zoning change is a positive step in that direction.” CONTACT: igorst3@hotmail.com
