t 15 years old, Jackson started a business when his Xbox video game console broke. He sold it online on eBay for $50 and from that point started importing items wholesale from China. He called his business Off the Radar Discounts. Before his 16th birthday, Jackson attracted his first investor, who poured $10,000 into the business, and his serial entrepreneurship had begun. After high school, the West Side native attended Illinois Central College and in 2009 founded the Jackson Action Coalition, a community organization with the goal of “bridging generational gaps by empowering community, youth and seniors

Marseil Jackson through outreach, services and events,” according to his campaign website. In his neighborhood, the young firebrand is known as “Action Jackson,” a nickname he’d earned based on stories like those of Margaret Smith, whose mother once complained about tree limbs that were left haphazardly in front of her home by city workers. “When they were cutting the tree limbs, they left all the cut tree branches in the street and even in the parking spaces for several days and they didn’t come back and get them,” Smith said. “We made several calls to the city and nothing happened. So my mother had me call Marseil and whatever he did,

the people came out within a day and cleaned them up.” Jackson, a member of the Corinthian Temple Church of God in Christ who ran for alderman in 2014, has said that his passion is getting things done for his neighbors. The thinking was a centerpiece of his campaign platform, but it also extends into his work with his nonprofit. “I’m running for alderman so that our community can get simple services; so our streets can be cleaned and potholes filled. There is no reason our schools should be closed and kids have to walk in gang-infested territories just to get to school,” Jackson said at the time. He may not have won the race, but he’s still running.

Dee Caswell is a spirited health and fitness enthusiast. Her personal story of battling obesity inspires those she trains. Although Dee had 8 years of experience as a trainer, she had little knowledge of how to translate that into her own business. Through the Entrepreneurship Training Program she developed an understanding of business fundamentals and created a network of advisors who have helped her carry her plans forward. In January 2015, Sweat It Off Fitness opened in Oak Park. With financing from The Private Bank, a large base of committed clients, and a strong pre-opening marketing campaign, Sweat It Off Fitness is prepared to become a success. If you are serious about starting or growing your business, Bethel’s Entrepreneurship Training Program could be for you. More than 45 West Side businesses have gotten their start in ETP and 18 businesses have expanded in the past two years. You can join them. For more information, call: 773.473.7870 and ask about ETP.

State Sen. Kimberly Lightford is the youngest African-American woman ever elected to the Illinois Senate. From her push to establish a higher minimum wage for the state’s working families to her legislative work to establish greater equity in Illinois education, state Sen. Kimberly Lightford has been a progressive beacon in Springfield since she assumed office in 1998. Before she became one of the state’s most pivotal lawmakers — she’s currently the Assistant Majority Leader, the chair of the Senate Black Caucus and the co-chair of the Illinois Commission of Intergovernmental Cooperation — she worked for the Department of Corrections and was a lo-

cal trustee in west suburban Maywood. Born on May 10, 1968 in Chicago, Lightford has been active in government since her high school days, when she served in student council. She graduated from Western Illinois University in Macomb, where she majored in human relations and management and minored in African American studies. She sought a master’s degree in public administration at the University of Illinois-Springfield. During her time there, she also interned with the Illinois House of Representatives. Among her many legislative accomplishments, Lightford was the “top negotiator on the legislation

developed as a part of President Obama’s Race to the Top program, leading to the establishment of stronger methods of evaluating teachers and tracking student progress,” according to her website. Her leadership has also “resulted in laws that put the best teachers in classrooms, provide universal preschool to 3 and 4-year olds and made sure children start school by the age of 6.” She’s also instrumental in the formation of a law that allows high school dropouts to re-enroll. The Illinois Hope and Opportunity Pathways through Education Program was referred to as a national model by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children of Chicago, our mission is simple: deliver world-class care to children who need it most – whether their families can afford it or not. For nearly 90 years we’ve specialized in helping children affected by orthopaedic conditions, cleft lip and palate, spinal cord injury, and rehabilitation needs. And while expertise, dedication and generosity make it all possible, ultimately we believe our hospital is fueled by love. That love is what helped the Shriners network of 22 locations treat over 124,000 children last year alone, helping them at every step as they made the journey from patients back to kids.

I’ve done a lot with the kids. Before they brought in a program for the homeless students, I would bring them toiletries, soap, diapers for their babies and things like that. I also got my own kids involved with the summer day camp. I’ve worked with a lot of teachers over the years on programs such as asthma education and financial literacy. We created a black history program and Christmas programs. This school is an extension of the community and its part of my life. It will always be part of my life. So I just do what I can to help it out.
