BLAZE A TRAIL AND ACHIEVE YOUR VITALITY Aging is a natural process, and it’s normal to feel concerned about how you will be affected. After all, none of us want to be forced to give up things we love because of reduced mobility, chronic disease, constant pain or fear of falling. Unfortunately, it can create an endless cycle – we fear the effects of aging so we cut back on activities that may cause falls or pain, and that only leads to a greater loss of balance and flexibility, added pain and a greater susceptibility to disease. It’s time to blaze a new trail – one that leads to a healthier future! The West Cook Y is your place for a senior-friendly environment that gives you opportunities to become your best self – no matter what your age. We are a marketplace leader in helping seniors live healthy and fulfilling lives. You’ll be part of a community of more than 1,000 seniors who are committed to aging well, staying active, building friendships and remaining a vital part of the community. Plus, our staff, trainers and program leaders will be with you every step along your journey to improved well-being.

Celebrating Seniors 2016: Maturing into a National Model
W
ith each passing year, and as we head into our 6th Annual Celebrating Seniors Week, our organization is maturing and making an impact that goes well beyond our own backyard. Most recently, I was part of a three-person Celebrating Seniors team that traveled in March to Washington, D.C. to present the concept of Celebrating Seniors at the American Society on Aging’s National “Aging In America 2016” Conference. Our presentation was well attended, well received and we generated a good amount of interest in the “toolkit” that provides a blueprint for others to emulate our Celebrating Seniors model. It was a thrill to receive those first orders—and to apply the proceeds from the sale of those toolkits to benefit older adults in Forest Park, River Forest, and Oak Park. In Washington, it was a humbling experience to be surrounded by so many people who have done so much to celebrate, safeguard, and meet the needs of older adults all over the United States. These people don’t just pay lip service to the value of older adults, but have dedicat-
ed their personal and professional lives to helping us all age with grace and dignity. Unsurprisingly, because we are a youthworshiping and age-denying society, the idea that age should be celebrated has been met with some resistance even here in our own communities. We are uncomfortable discussing what it means to grow older, and go to great lengths to avoid philosophical discussions about the purpose and meaning found in later life. In fact, ageism—discrimination of or stereotyping of people based on their age—seems to be the only socially acceptable “ism” left in America. Who doesn’t like to make an old-person joke? It’s easy to make fun of old people, even easier to discriminate against them. Ageism runs rampant in the greeting card aisle, the media, and all our social institutions. The two dominant media portrayals of older adults are a pair of well-to-do older adults frolicking on the beach, contrasted by an older adult near despair, head in hands. Is there really no in-between? Is one of those extremes how you imagine
yourself aging? I think not. While in Washington, I visited our magnificent monuments and read eloquent words of the sacrifices of our forefathers that enable us to live free. It prompted me to reflect on the sacrifices made by people from all walks of life to champion all kinds of causes. Causes with virtue. Like defeating ageist beliefs. Like Celebrating Seniors. Thank you for joining us as we honor older adults, celebrate lives well lived, and grow a sense of community that will be the envy of the world. All the Best,
Jim Flanagan Chairman, Celebrating Seniors Coalition Chairman, OPRF Township Senior Services Committee
The Community of Congregations Celebrates Seniors!
T
he Community of Congregations is delighted to work with the Celebrating Seniors Coalition and support its important work of lifting up the wisdom and life experience of the seniors among us. Not only does the coalition celebrate seniors, they provide needed support to many seniors throughout the year. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of those who support the mission of engaging and supporting seniors among us. Regardless of your age, take advantage of one of the many scheduled activities throughout Celebrating www.celebratingseniors.net

Seniors Week, May 12th to May 19th. And we hope you will lift up our seniors as an invaluable asset all year round. The Community of Congregations currently is prioritizing cultivating relationships with both congregations and people of faith in the Austin neighborhood. We want to especially thank those seniors who have contributed to our diverse, integrated community. And we encourage reaching out to seniors of diverse cultures and life experience for the collective wisdom will broaden all the more. The Community of
Congregations has a rich history of service. Our coalition launched West Suburban PADS that is now a program of Housing Forward. We also launched the Walk-In Ministry that became Prevail and also is a program of Housing Forward. We also launched the OPRF Food Pantry that serves not only our communities but surrounding ones as well. And Cluster Tutoring was launched by our coalition. We intend to add to this important list in the coming years! If you would like more information about Community of Congregations, please contact

HOSPICE CARE
Considered to be the model for quality, compassionate care at the end of life, hospice care involves a team-oriented approach of expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient’s wishes. Emotional and spiritual support also is extended to the family and loved ones. Generally, this care is provided in the patient’s home or in a home-like setting operated by a hospice program. Medicare, private health insurance, and Medicaid in most states cover hospice care for patients who meet certain criteria.
ASSISTED LIVING
Assisted Living communities are for persons who need help with daily living activities but do not require nursing home care. Typically they provide help with meals, bathing, dressing, housekeeping and other needs. Services are either included in the rent or provided at an extra charge. The Illinois Department of Public Health regulates and licenses assisted living facilities as “Residential Care” providers; however, many assisted living facilities are not licensed, so be sure to ask when considering a community.
28
CelebratingSeniors_80_Over_60_2016.indd 28
NURSING CARE
Nursing homes are facilities for seniors in need of 24-hour nursing care. They provide many of the same care options offered in other senior communities such as room and board, personal care, protection, supervision, and other types of therapy. Many are combined with short and long term rehabilitation facilities to aid in the recovery of individuals from major illnesses, injuries, or surgeries
ADULT DAY CARE
Adult Day Care is a planned program of activities designed to offer both mental and social stimulation to older adults who can no longer manage independently or who feel isolated and lonely. Nutritious meals and snacks are provided as appropriate and medication reminders can be incorporated in the program. Activities may include: arts and crafts; musical entertainment and sing-alongs; stretching or gentle exercise; Wii games and other hand/eye coordination and more. All of these activities are offered in a safe and secure environment to ease the concerns of their family members.
HOME CARE EXPLAINED
Home care agencies allow seniors to receive personal care and maintain independence while remaining in their own home. These services can be a viable alternative to relocating into a care services community and can include rehabilitative care, respite care, & skilled nursing. There are two main types of Home Care Agencies: Licensed Non-Medical Home Care, & Licensed Medical Home Care. Non-medical care services are typically covered by private pay, long term care insurance, or by veterans benefits or Medicaid if the care recipient qualifies. Medical home care services are typically covered by Medicare if the recipient is over age 65 or otherwise qualifies.

Jewelry Design is named for and inspired by a classic woman – my Mother, whose fashion was in every way – traditional. Her ideals encourage beautiful designs along classic lines that women can be proud to own or give as gifts. Lately I have added a few items for men as well I offer necklaces, bracelets and earrings (for both pierced and non-pierced ears). Also available are noveltyitems such as zipper pulls, bookmarks, key rings, holiday-related items and some vintage pieces. Available at local art fairs, at the store of Visit Oak Park, 1010 Lake Street, Oak Park and rbcjewelrydesign@gmail.com. Commissions are welcome.

You are invited to join us to discover the options and benefits of planning a funeral in advance. Benefits/Questions: • Gives you peace of mind. • What Veteran Benefits am I eligible for? • Can I preplan and not prepay? • How safe is my money if I prepay? • Can you help me with a monument?
• No cost or obligation to meeting and getting your wishes on file. • There are many options open to you should you wish to prepay and we can guarantee today’s costs when paying in advance.
Most of us plan ahead in life for our wedding, our children’s education, family vacations, and other significant expected life events. We also plan for the unexpected events of life by purchasing home, auto and medical insurance. Understanding the benefits of pre-planning has prompted many families to take the step to plan their own arrangements. Let me show you how it pays to plan ahead.
