Oak Park Native Creates Classes and Summer Camps for Creative Young Makers
Y
oung Makers Unite! What is a maker you ask? Well, Native Oak Parker and YOUNG MAKERS STATION founder and instructor, Vernon Robinson says, “A maker is a creative DoIt-Yourselfer! Makers don’t wait for things to be given to them. Makers creatively find ways to achieve their goals and then share the results with the world!” Vernon Robinson, a graphic designer and well known substitute teacher in District 97, has worked with youth for more than 15 years. As a designer, he has always had to creatively find ways to reach his students. With much success, Vernon found a way to combine both experiences in order to inspire his students to be creative, share ideas, problem-solve and “make” --- all while having fun. The result has been a series of creative classes/camps, including this summer’s YOUNG MAKERS STATION. This summer, YOUNG MAKERS STATION is excited to offer two camps. “Hocus Focus” is a beginning digital photography and graphic design class. Through a series of challenges campers
will explore different themes in well known books, photos and movies, and then, artistically, add digital magic to them. “Turntable and a Mic” is a beginning DJ class that will be taught by the highly respected DJ Joe Kollege. Campers will learn the basics of choosing and blending music and other techniques to keep the party going! The schedule for YOUNG MAKERS STATION’S camps is: Session 1 (Hocus Focus): 6/22/15-7/3/15 Sesson 1 (Turntables and a Mic): 6/22/15-7/3/15 Session 2 (Turntables and a Mic): 7/6/15-7/17/15 Sesson 2 (Hocus Focus): 7/6/15-7/17/15 YOUNG MAKERS STATION’S summer camps will be held at Mann Elementary School, located at 921 N. Kenilworth Ave, Oak Park, IL 60302. To learn more about the summer camp and other YMS programming, visit www.ynstation.com

a high level of learning and achievement throughout the school. “It means so much to me that my kids feel comfortable at Grace. It’s a community, it’s home to them,” says Brian Henderson, father of three young Grace School students.
Three-year-olds attend morning classes, 8:30 a.m. to noon, on two, three, or five days each week. Parents may choose a MondayWednesday-Friday option, a TuesdayThursday option, or Monday through Friday classes.
Grace Students consistently perform above national averages on standardized tests and succeed at competitive area high schools. A strong core curriculum challenges students academically. Two full-time resource teachers provide small-group and individual instruction for students who need extra help.
Preschool teacher Ramona Koetke finds that “three-year-olds’ curiosity and enthusiasm for life are contagious.” Her preschool classroom provides a warm, welcoming environment for little ones in their first encounter with school. There is time for free play each day as well as group activities. Self-care and social skills are nurtured, along with activities which lay a foundation for future academic success. Preschoolers, like older students at Grace, study God’s word daily. They learn that God loves and cares for each of them and together discover ways to praise and worship God in their lives. The family atmosphere at Grace supports
Elementary students of all ages participate in art, music, and German classes; band and orchestra instruction and ensembles are also available. After-school enrichment classes offer a variety of creative learning opportunities, and sports teams are open to all interested participants in grades 5-8. Third and fourth graders participate on the track and cross country teams. Extended care is available until 6:00 p.m. for children age four and up. The school currently has openings in preschool and most classrooms for the 20152016 academic year. For more information call the school office (708-366-6900), or visit www.graceriverforest.org.

Dear Prospective Parent, For 98 years, St. Edmund Parish School has shaped the hearts and minds of children, preparing them to lead successful, faithful and happy lives. As pastor of St. Edmund Parish, I invite you to learn about what makes St. Edmund Parish School the unique learning environment that it is. I welcome you to come and see for yourself precisely what is the Edmund Advantage. We offer a rigorous academic program for children of every age, striking the right balance between a focus on the fundamentals of reading and writing , mathematics and science, fostering a deep Christian faith, and forming a well-rounded student who is exposed to culture and the Arts. We are committed to developing the academic, spiritual, social and physical well-being of each student; and we have a zero-tolerance policy on bullying ! Our highly sought-after Early Childhood Program continues to offer a dynamic learning environment where our littlest ones benefit from all the opportunities that our first-eighth grade students receive, including art, music and physical education. Parents also appreciate that our tuition and fees are significantly less than other day-care opportunities, with the added benefit of being in a professional learning environment. At St. Edmund Parish School, we don’t use a one-size-fits-all style of learning. We offer a transformative learning experience where each child is challenged based on his or her unique talents, gifts and needs. What all students have in common is our comprehensive and standalone technology curriculum, and the use of iPads, SMART boards and document cameras utilized in all facets of learning. Our children are learning the Spanish language, and becoming engaged in the rich cultural heritage of the Spanish-speaking world . Their field of study also includes art and music, field trips to augment their classroom learning, and enrichment opportunities including: Chess Club, Student Council, School Newspaper Reporting , Choir, Band and Scouting. Many students also enjoy participation in basketball, volleyball and cheerleading. During the summer hiatus, we offer Technology and Math Camps and Early Childhood Summer Camp too. I invite you to schedule a tour right away to learn more about the Edmund Advantage.
