e are pleased to present the 2016-17 Forest Park Answer Book. Published annually by the Forest Park Review and the Forest Park Chamber of Commerce & Development, this guide contains a wealth of information on pretty much everything you need to know about Forest Park. Located just 10 miles west of downtown Chicago, Forest Park is a vibrant, active and diverse community, rich in history and small-town charm with an urban feeling. The cooperative spirit and civic pride shared between residents, business owners and local government gives Forest Park a genuine, time-honored sense of community. Madison Street’s urban mix of indeLAURIE KOKENES pendently-owned shops and personalized Chamber of Commerce customer service from local shopkeepers and Development Director makes shopping in downtown Forest Park a delightful experience. You’ll find neighbors greeting one another on street corners and friendly shopkeepers who pride themselves on making your shopping trip an enjoyable experience. From oneof-a kind art, fine cigars and handmade guitars to gourmet chocolate, women’s boutiques for all ages, military surplus, and a true old-fashioned hardware store, there is something for everyone. Off Madison, treasures include world-class ice sculptures, a nursery and garden center, and a fabulous steakhouse. Unique events, recreational opportunities and a generous choice of housing options make Forest Park a great place to live, work and play. The Forest Park Aquatic Center is the coolest place to be in the summer. Forest Park’s library, park district and community center have programs, classes and events for young and old alike. The largest St. Pat’s parade in the suburbs, a holiday walk with live windows and Santa’s reindeer, plus Rib Fest, Wine Walk & Shop, Casket Races and more, are events not to be missed. An abundance of history will interest even the most serious history buff. The Haymarket Martyrs Monument, Michael Todd’s grave and Showmen’s Rest are just a few of the historically significant gravesites in Forest Park’s many cemeteries. In 1907, the Forest Park Amusement Park was one of the most spectacular in its day. The torpedo plant where thousands of torpedoes were manufactured during WWII, the new 16-Inch Softball Hall of Fame, and a number of famous movie shoots add to Forest Park’s intriguing history. Accessibility and multiple transportation options make Forest Park the perfect destination for a day, a weekend or a lifetime. The Forest Park Chamber of Commerce & Development is a partnership of local business people, civic leaders and communityminded individuals working together to promote business and a sense of community. The Chamber office is located in the lower level of Forest Park National Bank & Trust at 7331 W. Roosevelt Road. We hope Answer Book will help you get better acquainted with a great community. In Our Katie & Mike Redmond The Redmonds, Forest Park-based musicans Katie and Mike Redmond are The Redmonds, a Forest Park-based musical act. Mike Redmond has performed professionally for 30 years. He first entered the music scene as a teenage soundman for Soundz Music in 1979, working with such bands as Cheap Trick, Molly Hatchet, the Dixie Dregs, and America. Katie Hull Redmond joined Mike in music and marriage in 2005. A trained singer, she has performed professionally at weddings, corporate events, festivals, and other social functions around the Chicago area for 20 years. How long have you worked in Forest Park? We’ve been working together as The Redmonds for the past 10 years. Mike was here first and has managed a professional music career based out of Forest Park since 1997. What brought you to Forest Park and what keeps you here? Mike moved to Forest Park to be close to his bandmates in the area; I joined him in 2005. It’s the perfect location for us to run our music business, allowing us to play at small local venues as well as clubs like FitzGerald’s and Wire.

Katie and Mike Redmond with their daughters. Its central location also enables easy access to the city as well as the suburbs for festivals throughout Chicagoland. What gets you out of bed in the morning? Our kids get us out of the bed in the morning — literally and figuratively! We are raising two daughters, ages 8 and 9. Both attend Forest Park public schools and participate in many programs offered through Forest Park organizations. They are learning music — our youngest takes drum lessons and our oldest is learning guitar. Both sing and we spend time doing what we all enjoy most: music! What keeps you awake at night? The same things that oth-
ers worry about I suppose — finances, our children’s well-being and such. We are grateful we all have our health and thankful to live in a community that has our back. What do you love about Forest Park? We love the continuity between all aspects of the Forest Park community. The schools, park district, community center, police and fire departments, etc., operate under the same motto with our community’s kids — Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. They follow the same guidelines everywhere they go. The workers in our community know us, know our children, and support our family and business 100 percent.

Rod Nunley of Elite Tire & Auto Service Rod Nunley Owner- Forest Park Elite Tire & Auto Service How long have you worked in Forest Park? I bought half of Consolidated Tire in 1985 and the other half in 1995 and renamed it Elite Tire. I’ve probably been working in Forest Park for 34 years. We moved into our current location on Harlem in 2010. What brought you here and what has kept you here? My father worked with cars, and I used to hang around the shop. I knew the former owner of Consolidated Tire. Dan and I were friends, and he asked me to come work for him. I’ve been here ever since. I enjoy what I do. I like the people I work with, and I couldn’t think of anything else I really want to do.
Forestparkreview.com
What gets you out of bed in the morning? My wife and three kids. I’m not going to lie, I’ve got to pay the bills, but I take a lot of pride in what I do. It’s really important to me to fix someone’s car the first time. So many people rely on me, I don’t want to let them down. A lot of people depend on me to make sure their cars are rolling. What keeps you awake at night? Nothing. I sleep like a baby, hard as a rock. I work hard all day, so I don’t stay awake at night. What do you love about Forest Park? Just about everything. It’s reasonably priced. The people in the town are great. When we were working to open the new store, the mayor and the people in the village were really easy to work with, wellbalanced and congenial. Forest Park is a great place to be a business owner. If you have a problem, the village will help you.

FForestt PParkers k ttookk a llookk at the Congress Street highway plans in 1955. The big issue at that time was the lack of access between the north and south sides of town via the Circle Ave. bridge during the two year construction of the highway. Limiting villagers to travel only on Harlem or Des Plaines to get from one side of town to the other was not an option that set well in town. Mayor Meyer, Commissioner Lambke, Village Attorney O’Shea, Chamber, Park Board and clergy took action with the highway department engineers. In the end an agreement was made to create a detour on Hannah avenue during the construction to connect the north and south sides of town. — Photo courtesy Historical Society of Forest Park

In Our Corner years, and I’ve been a writer for the Forest Park Review for 40 to 45 years.
WILLIAM CAMARGO/Staff Photographer
Jackie Schulz at home with her dog, Barkley. Jackie Schulz Forest Park Review mainstay since the early 1970s Jackie is a longtime Forest Parker
How long have you lived and worked in Forest Park? I’ve lived here for probably 60 years. I worked in Chicago as a teacher for 35 to 40
What brought you here and what has kept you here? We lived all over the place, but then my grandfather left us his house, so we moved into it. I didn’t really know anyone here. I was not part of Forest Park until I was quite older. I dearly love my neighbors. I have a house, my dog has a yard, and my cat can walk around, so why move?
I’ve planted quite a few trees in the yard, so we all sit in the yard and watch the birds and the squirrels. It beats watching TV. What gets you out of bed in the morning? My dog, my cat, the birds and
the squirrels. I look forward to the Oak Park Symphony season. I also enjoy my neighbors. They are from all over — places like Albania and the Philippines. All of my neighbors are wonderful people. What keeps you awake at night? Not much. I sleep pretty well. What do you love about Forest Park? I love the people and, of course, Madison Street. I like the hardware store and the library. My previous dog used to like to walk to the hardware store. This one likes to walk to the library. We have good restaurants. It’s quite a diversified community. People from all over the world make things more interesting.

Forest Park
The Roos name reaches back to the early years of Forest Park, previously known as Harlem. In 1868, Bernard Roos was a founder of German Waldheim (now Forest Home) Cemetery, consecrated in 1871. His son Albert founded the A. Roos and Sons Bank, which became the Harlem Savings Bank (later Forest Park State Bank), in 1897. Albert’s son, Fred B. Roos, became an Illinois State Representative, while son Albert C. formed the singing group Harlem Maennerchor, which exists to this day.

My father said: “Ling’s father is a “big boss” because they can afford to eat a full meal of rice everyday”. My father also said that he never had a full meal before the age of 23! When he was young, he raised cattle in exchange for a small monthly wage, “A bag of mixed grains”. On pay day, my father carefully put those grains into a smaller bag and gave them to my grandma. Grandma then divided that bag into more than 15 small portions and cooked each portion in a small bucket of water. The whole family survived by this thin congee mix (little bits of rice with lots of water and boiled, it becomes like soup) and root vegetables. As you can imagine, to be able to provide a full meal for

our family, was my father’s biggest dream. When my father turned 48 years old, we immigrated to the United States. Both my parents took jobs as dishwashers. Maybe my classmates and our neighbors looked down on us. But for my parents, one day’s pay was enough to buy a 50lb bag of rice. Now we can afford to have 100 full meals from one day’s pay. This is our blessing. As time goes by, the meaning of “Big Boss” have different standards. It’s not just a person who appreciates the delicacy of a bowl of rice. Welcome to our restaurant, enjoy our tasty gourmet creations and be your own “Big Boss”.

Jimmy Moccio at Smokin’ M’s. How long have you worked in Forest Park? I’ve worked in Forest Park since I was a kid. I’ve been here in this restaurant since 2008. I’ve been in the restaurant business for 25 years. What brought you here and what has kept you here? I was born in Forest Park and grew up behind the restaurant in a three-flat. I just grew up here, so it’s hard to leave. I went to o St. St Bernardine’s and Fenwick and went away a few years for college. I married my wife, who is also from Forest Park. I’ve kept coming back. It must be something in the water. I know everyone in Forest Park. What gets you out of bed in the morning? What gets me up is serving good food, seeing people and seeing their smiling faces. I love having people as repeat customers and hearing they like our food. Getting told “thank you” ev-

I love the hometown-ness of Forest Park. You still have your events that bring people together: events like Groovin’ in the Grove, things on Madison Street. This town really works to bring people together. Basically, Forest Park has a small-town feel even though it’s not a small town anymore. It’s a good thing to know you can walk around and people are friendly. You’ll always see someone you know. Forestparkreview.com

Tom Capalety shows off his TV inside Set-Back Inn at 7335 Roosevelt Road on Sept. 8, 1955. In the spring of 1955, Set-Back Inn installed the first public color TV in town, had air conditioning and standing-room-only crowds gathered around the color TV set. Set-Back Inn has been replaced by the south branch of Forest Park National Bank, Roosevelt Road and Circle Avenue. It was a restaurant and inn in the early 1900s through at least the 1950s. It served patrons of the Harlem Race Track, where Forest Park Plaza Mall is today. The establishment was named for the unusual entrance – the building did not border the sidewalk, so directions to the establishment were, “It’s at Circle and Roosevelt, setback from the sidewalk.” — Photo courtesy Historical Society of Forest Park

“Death of Cleopatra” is a 120-year-old transient statue that turned up in Forest Park, nobody seems to know when, or why. After being unearthed in a salvage yard in Cicero, she ended up in storage in Forest Park for years. Ten years ago she was restored and shipped to her present home in Washington’s Smithsonian Institute. Its creator was Edmonia Lewis.

The Park District of Forest Park, through West Suburban Special Recreation Association (WSSRA), offers more than 60 programs for local residents with disabilities. All ages and all ability levels are served in these therapeutic recreational activities. Many programs are similar to traditional park
district classes, such as the association’s swim lessons, fitness classes and day camp. At these programs, a recreation specialist will adjust how skills are taught, how much personal assistance will be given and if any equipment accommodation is needed. Behavior management plans and other tools are used. Some programs require one-on-one staffing for a participant to be successful. Others are designed so that the competition is at a fair level, as in Special Olympics. For detailed information about WSSRA programs and equipment accommodations, call 847-455-2100 or stop by the park district to pick up a brochure. Forestparkreview.com

This pool was the first public pool in Forest Park. It was part of the amusement park, also called Forest Park, which opened in 1908; just one year after the village changed its name from Harlem. The amusement park closed for good in 1922, but the pool was re-opened and used as a public pool for a couple of years until it was demolished in 1929.

In Our Corner Tiffany Brunson Principal, Field Stevenson School
How long have you worked in Forest Park? I’ve been the principal at Field Stevenson for five great years. Prior to that, I was a principal in Chicago, and prior to that, I taught in Chicago and Oak Park. Overall, I’ve been in education for 21 years. What brought you here and what has kept you here? Having worked in Oak Park, at OPRF High School for six years, I was very familiar with the community of Forest Park. When I was looking for a principal-ship, Forest Park had one that was available, and it was a perfect fit.
What gets you out of bed in the morning? Opportunity. It sounds pie in the sky, but the opportunity to do better than I did the day before gets me out of bed. I want to make something better, whether it’s an interaction or a conversation. I’m a people person. A new day gives you the opportunity to live another day and be a better person. What keeps you awake at night? To be honest, the state of our race relations in our nation. I have a 3½-yearold son. I’m concerned about his future and leaving this world a better place for our children and grandchildren. How can I help? This is one of the reasons I became a teacher and why I chose special education. It’s also why I became a principal because I could serve more children and the community.
What do you love about Forest Park? I love the small-town vibe but with the big-city access. It’s the best of both worlds. You have a small suburban feel and some of the city feel with great food and music. It’s 3.5 square miles, but there’s always something to do here. I think Forest Park is a great place to raise your kids. The schools are a gem. The park district, the library, the schools all work together. All the services are working in concert to make this a great place to raise a family and a great place to grow old.
