Hockey has Forest Park native traveling the globe Decade-long journey includes stops all over Europe By JOHN RICE

f Hollywood made a movie about the hockey career of Tim “Buster” Stapleton, audiences might consider it hokey. How could a kid who learned to skate on a homemade rink in the backyard of 1018 Hannah Ave., put together a 10-year career in the NHL and Europe? Stapleton, who is listed at 5-foot-7 and 180 pounds, was not blessed with size. But he has an uncanny ability to find the back of the net. Today, Stapleton is far from the flat landscape of Forest Park. He is playing in the mountains of Olten, Switzerland, about 45 minutes from Zurich. He lives there with Marissa Foradas and their two children, Boomer and Sienna. At 35, Stapleton is an elder statesman on the team but hopes to continue his unlikely career for a few more years. It all started on that backyard rink that his father made for him when he was 3. He owes a lot to his parents, Christopher and Bernadine, who supported him in those early days. Hockey is an expensive sport, but they believed in their sons, Buster and his brother, Buddy, who played hockey in college. “It was crazy,” Stapleton recalled, “My goal was to play pro hockey, but I never dreamed of the NHL. I wasn’t a very big kid.” He was good enough, though, to play two years for Fenwick High School. He spent his junior and senior years See HOCKEY on page 10

Forest Park Review, January 3, 2018

I

Forest Park is writer’s Alpha and Omega

t was a thrill to meet my journalistic hero, Chicago Tribune reporter, Ron Grossman. I enjoy Ron’s folksy tone and old-school wisdom. I was also struck by his connection to Forest Park. His family made an annual pilgrimage to Jewish Waldheim Cemetery for Yizkor. This is a Jewish tradition that involved visiting his grandparents’ graves, saying a prayer and placing a pebble on the headstone. “It was like a visit to a park and a history lesson at the same time,” he recalled. The highlight, though, was his mother serving a special meal of lamb chops. I didn’t know Ron had a contemporary connection to Forest Park until I learned he was taking weekly harmonica lessons from John Milan. Following a lesson, I dined with Ron and his delightful wife, Diane. Ron’s love for the harmonica goes back to his days at the University of Chicago, where he paid a yearly tuition of $600 to earn his Ph.D. in history. While studying on the South Side, Ron became a big fan of the blues, especially the three harmonica giants, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and Charlie Musselwhite. Ron is such a big fan, he and Diane traveled to

Mississippi to visit Williamson’s grave. Thus inspired, Ron gave himself harmonica lessons for his 80th birthday. He chose John Milan as his teacher, because his granddaughter had taken lessons from him. Ron started out on the diatonic harmonica his heroes had played. However, he found it too dif difficult to bend blue notes, so he switched to the simpler chromatic model. After three years of lessons, he mastered it well enough to accompany a band on “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” at his daughter’s wedding. Ron didn’t start out to be a musician. Growing up in Albany Park, he wanted to be a writer. Ron is proud of his roots in the closeknit Jewish neighborhood. He enjoys strolling down city streets and observing the subtle changes to the buildings. It goes back to his love of architecture, which he once studied. Ron was a little late getting into the writing racket. He spent 30 years teaching history at Lake Forest College, Michigan State University and the University of Nebraska. He didn’t join the Tribune until he was 50. He said that the rough and tumble

of Chicago politics didn’t faze him after all the intrigue he had faced in academia. Thirty-three years later, he’s still writing opinion columns, news stories and historical flashbacks. He wrote a flashback about Woodlawn Cemetery’s Showmen’s Rest. He said the brooding elephants made it look like a section for Republicans. Ron is an old “lefty” with liberal leanings, but he writes about the need for political reconciliation. He laments the fact that the Tribune is moving from its tower, where the First Amendment is carved in marble. During our dinner, Ron regaled us with stories of his exploits all over the world. He didn’t even mention he had interviewed novelist Joseph Heller and playwright Arthur Miller. That’s because he’s a humble, down-toearth neighborhood guy. He sees these same qualities in the people of Forest Park. He called the village his “Alpha and Omega.” The place where he honored graves as a kid and wails on the harmonica at the age of 83. Yizkor for Ron was more than savoring lamb chops. During the meal, his mother, Ethel, contented herself with cornflakes. Seeing the sacrifices his parents made inspires Ron to follow their example. He hopes that, in the coming year, the spirit of Yizkor will motivate more of us to sacrifice for the people who need our help. n John Rice is a columnist/private detec-

Private security cameras for Forest Park? Activist and Congressional candidate Anthony Clark is raising funds By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

In 2007, Anthony Clark was grazed by a bullet, the night before he was supposed to deploy for a military tour in the Middle East and Asia. Physically, he was fine. But the event changed him in other ways. He didn’t go to Turkey. He opposes personal ownership of weapons. “I had to work through my emotions,” Clark recalled. “Being afraid to go outside, being wary of large crowds, not trusting, didn’t have any empowerment, zero ownership of my community. I don’t want anybody else to have to feel that.” The experience, along with having his car stolen four years ago in Oak Park, and recent attendance at a local Neighborhood Watch meeting, inspired Clark to set up a fundraiser to buy 100 security cameras for Forest Park residents through his nonprofit

Suburban Unity Alliance. Clark, ers would turn over footage an instructor at Oak Park and to police. Get ready to talk about video gaming again Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming committee collected 3,500 signatures for binding referendum By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

The issue of video gaming has again popped up in Forest Park, with a local political action committee demanding the right to vote on the practice in an upcoming election. Jordan Kuehn, president of the Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming committee, said the group collected about 3,500 local signatures and submitted its petition to the village of Forest Park on Dec. 18, the last day to submit items to be included on the March 2018 ballot. The group seeks to get resident opinion on the question, “Shall video gaming be prohibited in the village of Forest Park?” It is a binding referendum. Forest Park’s local Election Board met Tuesday, Jan. 2, af after the Review’s print deadline, to discuss the question and the timing of any future hearings. Already James Watts, owner of O’Sullivans Public House at 7244 Madison St. has challenged the group’s petitions, questioning the validity of their signatures among other points, Kuehn said. “I’m optimistic, I think we will prevail,” Kuehn said. “I think we have enough signatures. It’s a bit of a process because of the objections coming out. But I am confident we will see this question on the March ballot.” Watts did not immediately respond to an interview request. O’Sullivan’s generated $54,092 in revenue from its five video gaming machines between January and November 2017, according to the Illinois Gaming Board. O’Sullivan’s paid $7,727 in municipal taxes on this income, according to the gaming board. There are 16 establishments in Forest

Park that operate video gaming machines. By the end of November 2017, the village collected $51,089 in tax revenue from gaming at these bars and restaurants. Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming, a committee which consists of about 15 people, has been collecting signatures to vote on the continued operation of gaming machines since November 2016, banking on the timing of the national presidential election because local voters were already out at their local polling places. The group needs to collect 25 percent of all registered local voters to get their question included on the March ballot, according to state video gaming law. Forest Park has debated video gaming many times in recent years. In April 2016 a referendum question forwarded by the anti-gaming forces was blocked from the ballot by a state law limiting the number of referendum questions to three. Mark Hosty, a former village commissioner who manages

Healy’s Westside, worked to fill the three referendum slots with largely off-topic questions. There was one video gaming related question on the ballot but it did not ask voters for a thumbs up or down on gambling but rather whether the village government should be required to cut property taxes with any video gaming revenue. Kuehn said Hosty hired circulators to get names for his petitions, which required signatures from only eight percent of local voters who cast ballots in the last Illinois gubernatorial election. He said this effort blocked inclusion of his PAC’s question. But Kuehn said Hosty’s referendum question missed the point, which he said is: should video gaming be allowed in the village? He said Forest Park residents have twice been asked about their stance on the matter, and that the majority dislike the practice. “The thing that drives me on this issue is the way it was brought about,” Kuehn said. “The village polled the town with a water bill several years back, and the village showed it was overwhelmingly against, 2-1 against from those who responded.” Forest Park Village Clerk Vanessa Moritz did not immediately respond to questions of whether another resident like Hosty has filed any alternative petition questions this year to block Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming’s question from being on the March ballot. Hosty did not immediately respond to an interview request. “It’s the way they went about doing this, ignoring the fact that people in town felt very strongly about this particular issue,” Kuehn said. “They decided to ignore the will of the people, that irks me and that’s my biggest motivation.”

Triton buys old Golfland property for $3.6M Trustees say the land could be used for new facilities, expanded programs By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter

Provided Aerial

GROWING: Triton College’s Board of Trustees has purchased an 8.3-acre former golf driving range just south of its River Grove campus to expand its footprint. It’s unclear at this time how the new property will be developed to further the community college’s mission.

A former golf practice range in Melrose Park is now part of Triton College’s campus after the college’s Board of Trustees unanimously agreed to purchase the land in November for $3.6 million. Trustees unanimously approved a resolution to authorize the purchase by issuing a five-year debt certificate through BMO Harris Bank. The interest rate for the debt certificate will be no higher than 2.4 percent. The 8.3-acre property — located at 1701 S. 5th Ave., just west of Costco, east of Gottlieb Hospital and immediately south of Triton’s east side campus — was formerly Golfland Arcade, a practice driving range that closed in 1996. According to documents from the Nov. 2 meeting, college officials believe that the property “is suitable for opportunities such as a new education building to house college programs, expansion of the horticulture department’s academic activities or uses for other programs and facilities.”

The property was listed on LoopNet for $7 million, but according to county land records, the property was purchased for $3.3 million in 2006 by River Park Development LLC, based in Harwood Heights. Albert Bruno is listed as the manager of that company. Records show that Bruno took out a $5.2 million mortgage on the property at the time of the purchase. Attempts to contact Bruno were unsuccessful. In the last several years, Triton has undergone a series of new construction and capital improvement projects as part of a $53 million Campus Renewal Project, including a major renovation of its health and sciences facility in 2015. The renewal project also included the $14 million renovation of its east athletic complex, completed in 2016, and improvements to its student center and child development center, among many others. So far, it isn’t known whether or not the purchase of Golfland is part of that renewal project. Attempts to contact Triton officials before press time were unsuccessful.

Ron and Joan Peterson were the first to hit the floor. Despite months of exhausting dialysis for Ron’s multiple myeloma cancer, the Chicago couple still got up and partied on Dec. 29 at the Howard Mohr Community Center’s annual New Year’s Eve Party for seniors, who boogied to such classics as “Shake Baby Shake” and waltzed to slow tunes like “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” The center’s theme this year was “masquerade,” with some of the party’s 85 attendees donning Phantom of the Opera-style masks and enjoying dinner, dancing and even a countdown to “midnight” with a champagne toast — despite celebrating 2018’s arrival a few days early. Seniors came from as far as Plainfield to party in Forest Park. “It’s excellent,” said Joan Peterson, 78, breathing heavily as she rushed back to her table for a quick break. One song later she was back on the floor, her gold Mardi Gras beads bouncing as she jived with Ron. Decked in a red-and-gold mask, Brenda Powers declared the Petersons’ attitude excellent. Powers, child care director for the center, was responsible for organizing and decorating the community center for the event. She said the duo attends every function and trip the community center hosts, even if Ron isn’t feeling his best. “They’re always having fun and living life to the fullest,” Powers said of the dynamic

It’s just nice for them to have something to do for New Year’s.” Powers said community center staff spent two days painting signs, draping Christmas lights and organizing for the big party. Rose Catering served up brisket, mashed potatoes, dessert and two different types of punch to attendees. Though she hails from Maywood, Dorothy Lane, 81, said she joined the Forest Park center’s senior club years ago for events like this. “When they said ‘party,’ you know I had to be there,” Lane said. She sat in the back of the party, weighing leg spasms against her desire to dance. She also wore a neck brace. Lane recently had surgery. Her wish for 2018? “Good health and stay involved in the community,” she said.

Cemetery symbols, prohibition pub crawl and more in 2018 The Historical Society has plenty in store for the new year By NONA TEPPER Staff Reporter

No time like the present to reflect on the happenings of the Historical Society of Forest Park, right? Here’s a few achievements, exhibits and initiatives the group plans to expand on in 2018: ■ On Oct. 18, the society, located on the ground floor of village hall, 517 Desplaines Ave., unveiled its latest installment on cemetery symbolism, an exhibit that features rubbings and illustrations of 12 different symbols found on gravestones inside Forest Home Cemetery. The Historical Society focused on Forest Home because it’s one of the few non-secular cemeteries in the area, which means that those buried didn’t have to feature a symbol specific to any organization on their tomb. Insignias include an oak leaf or a handshake, signs from the Fraternal Order of the Free Masons, with descriptors explaining what those symbols mean — if the society knows, that is. “For Free Masons, it’s unknown, it’s either for geometry or for God,” said Alexis Ellers, director. The society also provides attendees with a

guide on where to find the gravestones in Forest Home, should you want to brave the cold for a scavenger hunt. The exhibit will run until April, and is open Monday, 8 a.m to 7 p.m., and Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ■ Currently, the Historical Society is creating two new community quilts, similar to the 1923 Chamber of Commerce quilt in its collection. One quilt will honor Forest Park families, and the other will celebrate local businesses. The society is also in discussion with the American Legion to be the archivist for their Grand Army of the Republic documents, said Brian Kuhr, a Historical Society board member. ■ On Nov. 12, the society and Shanahan’s restaurant, 7353 Madison, hosted local veterans for a free meal, and recorded stories from their time in service. Nine veterans attended and shared accounts, which ranged from Commissioner Joe Byrnes speaking of his service in Vietnam to testimonies of time served in Afghanistan, Germany and here at home. “It featured a broad spectrum of vets — women and people of color, not just focusing on one type of vet,” Ellers said. “A lot of dif different perspectives, branches, roles, not just combat vets; everyone who’s involved.”

ORGANIZATION DIRECTORY

The society will continue to collect stories through 2018. ■ The Historical Society also hosted its annual May Day event in Forest Home Cemetery near the Haymarket Martyrs Monument, which is a tribute to the anarchists who were executed for their alleged roles in the Haymarket bombing of 1886. German food and speakers honored the history of U.S. labor law. An organizer from Turkey spoke at last year’s event, along with the president of the Illinois Labor History Society, Bleue

Benton of the Oak Park library, and more. In 2018, the society hopes to host the event on April 29 at a bigger venue, with more speakers and musicians to sing labor songs. ■ In June, the society will again host its twice annual Prohibition Pub Crawl, where attendees dress in period costume (flappers, anyCourtesy the Forest Park Historical Society one?) and learn about what was going on in Forest Park during that time. ■ In October, Theresa Steinbach was named the new president of the board, after longtime president Jerry Lordan retired the same month. Lordan now serves as secretary. Augie Aleksy also retired as vice president of the board in October, after serving on the board for six years, Kuhr said. Aleksy continues to serve as an auxiliary board member.

Setting the record straight on the IRS I am a CPA who lives in Forest Park. My practice has focused on taxation for over 30 years. I saw your article under the Crime column headed “Fraudulent IRS call.” At the end you note, “The IRS only emails about tax issues or to request information; IRS of officials never call.” This statement is completely inaccurate. The IRS never emails. Their first step is to send a letter. They will send several letters to a taxpayer trying to resolve an issue. If they receive no response after several letters, they may

call a taxpayer. But they never threaten the taxpayer with a lawsuit and they never ask the taxpayer for their Social Security Number when calling. The IRS does not accept credit card information over the phone. All credit card payments are processed through a third party processor. They do not request gift cards or wire transfers. My concern is your comment could make residents vulnerable to email scams, which are as prevalent as phone calls. I have personally received dozens of calls

and emails from scam artists. Here is a link to the IRS website page where they discuss these scams. https:// www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-scams-consumer-alerts. The imbedded link “How to know it’s really the IRS calling or knocking on your door” has additional information. I hope you are able to correct this error so that more of our neighbors are not victimized by these scam artists.

Stolen red-nosed car crashes in Forest Park Jamesha McChristine has been charged with fleeing and eluding police, criminal trespassing and two counts of criminal damage to property, after stealing a car in Elmhurst and crashing into an apartment in Forest Park on Dec. 20. McChristine, 19, of Chicago, allegedly stole a black Infiniti decorated with a red Rudolph nose about 3 p.m. in Elmhurst, and drove to Desplaines Avenue in Forest Park, according to a police report. Elmhurst police notified Forest Park of the car theft. Forest Park officers pulled in front of the Infiniti at a stoplight. McChristine reportedly pulled into oncoming traffic and turned left onto Jackson Boulevard. Police turned on their lights and gave chase. She lost control of the vehicle and nearly collided with an off-duty police officer, driving over the curb, across the parkway and lawn, and striking a building at 539 Jackson Ave., showering the inside of the garden-level apartment with glass and debris. Police say McChristine exited the vehicle and fled northbound on Jackson, toward the alley of the building. They tried to Taser her but missed. She ran across the el tracks and through the CTA parking lot. She buttonholed through a fence and attempted to

hide in the bushes, then ran to the back of a house on the 600 block of Grove Lane, forced a rear door open and ran through the home, knocking furniture over along the way with police in pursuit. She crossed over Van Buren Street, climbed onto the hood of a car, and attempted to climb the barbed wire fence into the CTA train yards. Police told her to get down, but she ignored the request. They pulled her to the ground. After a brief struggle, officers handcuffed her, and she reportedly told them, “You’re only doing this to me because I’m black and I did a carjacking.”

A 12-year-old and 14-year-old allegedly attempted to pull a car door open while the driver was still inside. The driver, sitting inside her green Lexus about 6:42 p.m. on Dec. 23 on the 600 block of Harlem Avenue at the Elgin alley, reported that two boys dressed in ski masks came up to her car and tried to pull open the door. The woman reportedly started screaming and pulled the door closed. The boys then ran north through the alley. She gave a brief description to police. Oak Park police spotted two boys who matched the description at 315 S. Maple Ave. in Oak Park and pulled them over. One re-

portedly wore an ankle monitoring bracelet and officers learned he’s currently on house arrest for multiple vehicular hijackings. Both were released without charges to their mothers.

Apartment broken into … twice At some point between 8 p.m., Dec. 22 and 1 a.m., Dec. 23, someone broke into an apartment on the 8000 block of Roosevelt Road and stole a TV, PlayStation and two laptops. According to the police report, the victim believes offenders either broke the lock on the front door or gained access through a window. Later on Dec. 23, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., someone broke into the apartment again, and stole a TV, a bucket full of movies and water bottles.

Running car hijacked A car was stolen from Thornton’s, 601 Harlem Ave., on Dec. 28 about 5:40 p.m., after the driver left it running in the parking lot. The man left his car running and went inside to use the gas station’s bathroom, according to a police report. He told police he parked the car right by Thornton’s entrance and was

inside the gas station for no more than 10 minutes. When he came outside, his Buick was gone. A second car was stolen from Thornton’s on Dec. 28, after the driver went inside the gas station and left his Honda Odyssey unlocked and running, according to a police report. When the driver walked back outside, the car was gone. He told police he may have seen the car traveling eastbound on Jackson Boulevard, but he wasn’t sure. According to footage from a surveillance camera, an offender wearing a black coat walked up to the vehicle about 5 p.m., entered the Honda and then drove away. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Dec. 23-29, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

BITQY from page 1 Kitchen & Lounge restaurants, 7445 Madison St. in Forest Park and 733 Lake St. in Oak Park. When District House — his woodfire restaurant and tap room at 220 Harrison St. in Oak Park opens in mid-February — he said he’ll accept cryptocurrency there too. “We’re making [efforts] out there to try and catch any trend we can,” O’Brien said. “Weird things sometimes catch on. Business has been a little rough and we’re doing something unique to turn ahead.” Like most bars and restaurants along Madison Street, O’Brien said business for Scratch Kitchen in Forest Park is down this year. He estimated the restaurant will gross just under $1 million in 2017, down 10 percent from the year before. After talking with the food and drink distributors that supply other Madison Street establishments, O’Brien said he believes area restaurants’ revenue is also down about 20 percent year over year. O’Brien said he doesn’t know why it’s down in Forest Park — maybe customers are Uber-ing into Rosemont or Chicago’s trendy West Loop neighborhood — but he hasn’t had that problem in Oak Park. There, business has been growing every month. He said he’ll probably turn $2 million in Oak Park in 2017, his first year open. O’Brien’s lowered prices, introduced specials and negotiated with the landlord of his Forest Park location as a way to cut costs. Now, to drum up business, Scratch Kitchen started accepting bitqy electronic currency as of Dec. 14, becoming the first local business to do so and joining more than 100 Illinois businesses to jump that trend. Now customers can pay for their burgers by transferring bitqy from their phones. They must create an online account, called

a qyckwallet, and then transfer their bitqys to Scratch Kitchen’s qyckwallet. O’Brien got involved with the cryptocurrency through Lyn Bayan, a local bitqy evangelist, whom he calls the “bitqyck girl.” Bayan is responsible for getting Chicago-area companies to offer their products through Bitqyck Inc.’s travel, health, retail and other product and service sites. Bitqyck is founded in Dallas, Texas and is the first U.S.-based cryptocurrency company. She said she has plans to talk to Junction Diner, 7401 Madison St., about introducing bitqy in early 2018. “People already made millions from this,” Bayan said, referring to other cryptocurrencies like bitcoin. “People got involved in 2009, bought hundreds worth of coins, thousands of coins at that time. Today they’re millionaires. Bitqy is in that position, pennies fluctuating. It will be a couple of years before it goes upscale in value.” Right now, bitqy trades for pennies. Like other cryptocurrencies, bitqy also trades hands anonymously. That means O’Brien can claim as much — or as little — as he wants on his taxes for bitqy earnings. In the first quarter of 2018, Scratch will offer deals through Qyckdeals, the cryptocurrency’s new Groupon-like site that offers customers daily restaurant, consumer product and service deals. Once O’Brien signs up for Qyckdeals, Scratch will be able to accept bitcoin, ethereum and litecoin cryptocurrencies. O’Brien soon plans to unveil a special bitcoin burger, along with an appetizer of mozzarella fried golden, the color of the online currency, and topped with pesto aioli drizzled in the symbol of a bitcoin. So far, no customers have paid in bitqy yet. O’Brien believes the food specials will help drive use. “Selling food is our primary source of income,” O’Brien said. But, “there’s no reason [Scratch] couldn’t get on the cryptotrain like I am.” CONTACT: ntepper@wjinc.com

Russia and beyond from page 1 playing for the Chicago Chill, a traveling team out of Bensenville. After that stint, Stapleton signed with the Green Bay Gamblers, of the U.S. Hockey League. The teenage Stapleton carried his suitcase and hockey gear to the homes of host families, who furnished him with room and board for two years. Stapleton enjoyed the experience because “the Gamblers and Packers were the only teams in town.” Plus, his play earned him a full scholarship to the University of Minnesota at Duluth. When he wasn’t playing college hockey, Stapleton was working on a degree in criminology. “I had a pretty good college career,” he said. “But there was no interest from any American teams. I was never drafted by the NHL.” He was deemed too short for the league. That didn’t discourage Stapleton, whose agent had connections in Europe. Stapleton traveled to Finland for a tryout. Many Americans didn’t make the cut, because European teams were only allowed to sign four “imports” from other countries. He not only signed with the team, he finished second in the league in playoff scoring. “During my second year, Finland was a hotbed for future NHL goalies,” he said. Photo provided Stapleton had the challenge of scoring on future stars, like Pekka Rinne and Antti Niemi. Stapleton attributes his longevity to his versatility. “I’ve played forward my whole career, but I’ve also played center and wing for entire seasons,” he said. “There’s an advantage to being able to play several positions.” Though he was a prolific scorer in his early days, he’s now content to be a playmaker. On April 21, 2017, Stapleton signed to play in the Swiss League. “It’s one of the best countries for raising a family,” he said. “It’s beautiful. It has the best views. The people are friendly. It’s a privilege to live here.” During the summer, Stapleton and his family enjoy their home in New Buffalo, Michigan, which includes a boat for cruising the lake. Last summer, he finally completed his criminology degree, working as a security guard at a factory in Broadview. He wasn’t planning a career in criminology, but a photo of Stapleton sitting at the security desk gave his Forest Park buddies more ammunition for making fun of him. “My good friends from Forest Park bring me down to Earth,” he said. “If anyone calls me from Forest Park, I have time to talk. I’m proud to be from Forest Park. It’s a hardworking little suburb. Forest Park shaped me 100 percent.” Stapleton may have been shaped here, but he knows this could be his last season, though he wants to stay in the game. “I’d like to work in player development. I’d like to connect with current players,” Stapleton said. “With everything I’ve been through, I have valuable experience to share with younger players. I had to go through a lot of adversity. Being called up and sent down puts a lot of strain on your mind. You can start doubting yourself.” There’s no self-doubt in Stapleton, and he feels comfortable financially and physically. He’s ready to face new challenges, after his playing career ends. He recently offered his analysis of the current Blackhawks. “They still have their core,” he stated. “I’m a firm believer they won’t dominate the regular season but when the playoffs start, I wouldn’t count them out.” Just as no hockey team should ever count out a scrappy forward from Forest Park.

New Year’s at Community Center

A

couple days early and a few hours shy of midnight, the Community Center still managed a festive celebration of the arrival of 2018 for some 85 partyhearty members of its senior club. Dancing and dinner were the order of the day on Dec. 29. Offering seniors the opportunity to gather, be active, and have some good fun was the purpose of the well-decorated, well-planned event. The Community Center has been doing good work for so long and so smoothly, it can sometimes run under the radar. Whether it is daycare, after-school programs, senior services, the food pantry and holiday gift program, the summer Clubhouse, health fair, Ribfest. Well, the list is long and ever changing. On to 2018 for one of Forest Park’s gems.

Restocking police department Forest Park has three new police officers. They were sworn in Dec. 18 by Mayor Anthony Calderone. The three recruits will be on the street after completing expansive training at the Chicago Police Academy. The hirings bring the department to its full complement of 38 sworn officers, at least, as Chief Tom Aftanas notes, on paper. Right now, the department remains a bit short-handed with an officer recovering from injury, another overseas on military service and a third new hire a month away from completing police academy training. Getting the department to full strength is, of course, a priority. We’re happy to see new faces on this force and we look forward to a new generation of officers coming up under Aftanas’ leadership. This department often gets deserved credit from citizens for its prompt response and solid work. But, as we’ve noted over decades, this department also has a troubled cultural history of internal issues and overly aggressive tactics in some circumstances. This still-new chief and his new, young officers are, we believe, poised to improve and steady the department in the years to come.

Banning nepotism in Proviso If, a couple of years back, you created a reform checklist for the Proviso High Schools, somewhere in the middle of a Top Ten list would have been to block any future hires of anyone related to anyone on the school board. No brothers hired to run custodial services. No husbands on the security team. No daughters teaching English. No cousins coaching a sport. That daughter might be a fine English teacher. And if she is, she is almost guaranteed a job teaching English — in any other school district. The mission and integrity of this long-under-siege school district has been undermined by legitimate questions about nepotism in its hiring. Last month by a 6-1 vote, the reformminded school board put a strong check on any such hiring going forward. And the board went a step beyond banning hiring of relatives. Also prohibited is the hiring of anyone in a business relationship with a sitting board member. Good work by this good board. What’s next on that checklist?

Old fashioned or cutting edge?

have some good news,” announced Pastor Walter Mitty after everyone in the weekly men’s breakfast group had gathered around the big round table in the overflow room of the Main Street Café last Saturday. “My nephew Brian up in Manitowoc is getting his Eagle Scout award next month.” “Impressive,” Alice commented as she filled cups with coffee. “Wait, wait. Did you hear that?” said Eric Anderson rolling his eyes. “Alice said something positive!” “You can blow it out your you know what, Anderson.” Alice set the empty coffee pot on the table and continued. “If more of our so-called men in this country were Eagle Scouts, we wouldn’t be going to hell in a handbasket.” Ash joined the conversation. “You know, Alice, I have to say that I agree with you. I never made Eagle. Only got to Star, but I still remember the Scout Oath. ‘On my honor I will do by best to do my duty. . . .” “to God and my Country and to obey the Scout Law;” Dominque joined his friend. “To help other people at all times. . . .” Pastor Walt was the last one at the table to join in. “To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” “I’m impressed again,” said Alice with her hands on her hips. “I didn’t think you cheap skates had that kind of upbringing.” Eric Anderson broke the silence that had lasted a minute or so after Alice left to serve other customers and the men around the table tried to grasp what they had just heard from their usually cynical server. “You know, I was in Boy Scouting till I was fifteen,” he said “It was around that age that I began to figure out my sexual identity. Are you guys aware that the Boy Scouts had a ban on openly gay boys until 2014?” “That’s right,” said Fr. Bob Sullivan poking his head through the overflow room door and taking an empty seat at the table. “I overheard your conversation and it reminded me of the time some Boy Scouts wore rainbow sashes and marched in the Gay Pride Parade. It caused quite a stir.” “That the thing,” said Eric. “I finally had to leave scouting, because I couldn’t authentically be myself in that organization anymore. But. . . .” “But what?” asked Dominique.

“But it was hard to leave scouting, because it had given so much to me. I mean, this city boy got to go canoeing in Canada, learned how to swim, and got experience being a leader along with the scoutmaster in my troop who treated me with respect.” “I know I’m going to sound old fashioned,” added Ash, “but just imagine how discourse in this country would change if people took seriously the values in the Scout Oath and the Scout Law.” “Like what?” asked Fr. Sullivan. “Like duty and honor,” Eric replied before Ash could respond, “and trustworthy and thrifty and obedient and brave, clean and reverent.” Everyone turned to Fr. Bob as he began to laugh. “Sounds like my Franciscan order,” he said with a smile. “You know—poverty, chastity, obedience, serving the poor, reverence.” “And that’s why it was so hard to leave,” said Eric. “Lots of people have a stereotype that we in the gay community are all lascivious and anti-tradition, but the truth is that all most of my gay friends want to do is settle down, own a home, raise a family and contribute to the community.” “Now it’s my turn to laugh as I listen to you guys,” said Mitty, “because for most of my life people have said that I’m pretty straight laced. They’d use words like square or simple or tight assed to describe me. And in a way, they’re right. In many ways I’ve lived more like my friend Fr. Bob here than a lot of people do.” “That’s just because they don’t know you, Pastor Walt.” Dominique looked straight in Mitty’s eyes as he continued, “The Robert Taylor Homes where I grew up and Manitowoc where you were raised are cultural light years apart, but the man I’ve come to know over the past ten years didn’t lie to the FBI like Michael Flynn or grope women like Harvey Weinstein or brag about it like our president.” Moments like these were why these church guys kept coming to the Main Café on Saturday mornings. “You see,” said Eric. “I don’t ever want to be accused of throwing the baby out with the bath water. Although the Boy Scouts didn’t officially lift their ban on openly gay boys until 2014, I will continue to be forever grateful for those ‘old fashioned’ values which they reinforced in me.” “From my point of view,” Ash concluded, “old fashioned is starting to sound like cutting edge and progressive.”
