Three questions have already been submitted for the March 2018 ballot, potentially blocking — for the second time — a local group’s quest to register resident opinion on video gaming “It’s a David-and-Goliath kind of thing,” said Jordan Kuehn, president of Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming. Bar owners “have money to hire a very skilled lawyer, as they did last time. They hired a very expensive, very skilled lawyer. We are just a handful of people. We have some money, but not that kind of money.” Let Forest Park Vote on Video Gaming, a political action committee comprising about 15 local residents, seeks to get a vote on the question, “Shall video gaming be prohibited in the village of Forest Park?” It is a binding referendum, which means that if the majority of people disapprove of the practice, video gaming would be outlawed in the village. Let Forest Park Vote collected about 3,500 petition signatures and submitted the names to the village on Dec. 18, the last day to submit items for the March 2018 ballot. They discovered then that three advisory questions were submitted in November 2016 by

KILLER KRABBE: Healy’s Westside will hold a fundraiser for the Shelton family Feb. 10.

Lana Katherine Shelton lost her struggle with Krabbe disease on New Year’s Day 2018. The 18-month-old from North Riverside was the daughter of Donald Shelton Jr. and Laura A. Shelton. She died peacefully in their arms. Laura Shelton is a member of the Goodman family, longtime residents of Forest Park. Shelton told the Forest Park Review that she was determined Lana’s death would not be in vain. “Due to Lana’s diagnosis and the Chicago Tribune article, ‘Doomed by delay,’ I along with five other Krabbe families were invited to testify at the state capitol in Springfield in early October 2017,” Shelton said. “It was because of our testimonies that the Department of Public Health director finally pushed to implement the screening program.” Krabbe disease is a rare neurological disorder that can be treated if it is diagnosed early. By the time symptoms appear, it’s too late to give the stem cells from umbilical cord blood to reverse its devastating effects. The children become paralyzed, blind and deaf and finally
are unable to breathe. Shelton said that the testimony of the Krabbe families resulted in a law that every newborn in the State of Illinois as of December 11, 2017, will now be screened for Krabbe disease. “Lana’s legacy is making sure that no other family in Illinois will have to endure the pain and heartache of this terrible disease,” Shelton said. She advises parents to take advantage of this screening. “If there are parents that had their newborn prior to December 11, 2017 and suspect it, please seek a neurological evaluation ASAP,” Shelton said. “There may still be a chance for a cord transplant if symptoms are not too severe. Or they can order a screening packet from Hunter’s Hope, if they are expecting.” For the Shelton family, Krabbe disease wasn’t only devastating physically and emotionally. They incurred staggering medical costs. To defray these costs, they are holding the Lana Smiles fundraiser at Healy’s Westside, 7321 Madison St., on Saturday Feb. 10, from 6 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $50 at the door.

The Forest Park Village Council added another tool to the village’s planning toolbox at Monday’s meeting, voting 4-0 to hire Muse Community + Design of Chicago for planning services. Commissioner Rachell Entler did not attend. Muse will supplement the planning services provided by Houseal Lavigne Associates of Chicago, which has worked with the village since 2016. Village Administrator Tim Gillian explained that Muse’s founding principal, Courtney Kashima, will assist Steve Glinke, director of the Department of Public Health and Safety, on an as-needed basis. “We’ll use Muse when a staff member needs questions answered or on smaller issues,” he added. Glinke said while Houseal Lavigne continues to provide “big picture” planning, Muse will be more of a “boots on the ground” planner. “We need both,” he said. Mayor Anthony Calderone noted the village has used outside consultants for planning services for 15 years. “We’re simply hiring outside consulting expertise as we have for years,” he said. Calderone said Houseal Lavigne is more likely to assist the village with the development of a shopping center, whereas Muse is more likely to assist with construction of a new home. Muse will be paid $95 per hour to as-
Mayor to meet with Park Service advisor soon By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter
Following an initial meeting in November, Mayor Anthony Calderone said he hopes to meet with a representative of the National Park Service this month regarding the proposed “Cultural Park” on the Altenheim property. “I’m waiting to meet with Mike [Mencarini] of the National Park Service,” he said at Monday’s village council meeting. “I hope to have a more comprehensive report at the next village council meeting.” The Park Service in October awarded the village a technical assistance grant from the agency’s Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) branch to help officials create a cultural park for year-round use on village-owned property near the Altenheim Retirement Home at Madison
and Van Buren streets. The non-monetary grant will assist village officials in identifying possible funding sources and help them develop partnerships. RTCA is dedicated to connecting urban dwellers to natural resources, such as rivers, trails and other conservation projects. The village bought the 11-acre property for $3.6 million in 2001, and over the years several ideas for development, including from Fenwick High School and the West Cook YMCA, were eventually scrapped. Calderone said the initial meeting, held Nov. 28, was designed to go over the administrative aspects of the grant. Mencarini concurred, noting they discussed the type of assistance that Forest Park requested in its application and how the RTCA program could best be a resource. “With this being the very first meeting, I am working on
sist with project management for new and ongoing developments and redevelopments. The contract takes effect immediately. Other responsibilities include reviewing new development proposals, attending meetings, and preparing staff memos and other communications regarding new development and redevelopment. Gillian said Muse and Kashima were recommended, noting that the firm had recently completed a short-term contract with the village of LaGrange. The firm’s website describes Muse as an urban planning and public engagement firm that helps clients “make inspired changes to improve their communities.” Services offered include land use planning, downtown planning, neighborhood planning, corridor planning, master planning and strategic planning as well as zoning, economic development, and public engagement and outreach. “Muse creates the policies, plans and regulations that enable aspirations to become reality,” according to the website. “By employing a people-focused approach, Muse devises realistic, tailored solutions that celebrate communities’ unique assets.” Houseal Lavigne, which also works with the villages of Oak Park and River Forest, “provides expertise and experience, ranging from detailed economic analysis to long-term community visioning and strategic planning,” according to the firm’s website.
finalizing a timeline and proposed scope for the grant which will focus on community engagement and the Park Service hosting and facilitating broad-based community input,” Calderone said in December. The RTCA program is a community partnership program of the Park Service that provides technical assistance to local governments and community groups that are planning community-led outdoor recreation or natural resource conservation projects. “We typically assist local partners with project management, community outreach and engagement, partnership development and meeting facilitation, and trail and green space planning,” Mencarini said. He also said RTCA program could assist the village by facilitating community outreach and engagement with local partners and stakeholders to identify specific opportunities and concerns for developing community green space at the project site.

You have problems? ‘Ask Johnny’ has the answers
D
ear Johnny: I love my wife but sometimes she drives me crazy. When we’re getting ready to leave the house, she has to shut off lights, check the gas burners, and make sure the iron is unplugged. Meanwhile, I’ve got my coat on. I don’t yell, but I sigh a lot. Last week was the worst. We were running late and I found her re-hanging the toilet paper. Oh, and she leaves half-empty glasses of water all over the place. Tired of Waiting
when it’s time to leave the house. He’s constantly rushing me, sighing and tinkling the car keys. Sometimes, he storms out and sits in the car. Last week, we had dinner reservations and he rushed out of the house, without his phone, glasses and wallet. With no GPS, we had trouble finding the restaurant. When we got there, he couldn’t read the menu and I had to pay the check. Did I mention he doesn’t replace toilet paper the right way? Oh, and he pours out my water before I get a chance to finish it. Feeling Rushed
JOHN RICE
Dear Tired: I sympathize. Waiting is the most frustrating part of the human condition. You are obviously a wonderful husband for being so patient. In clinical terms, your wife is a “Slow Leaver.” People with this disorder suffer from insecurity, if everything isn’t “just-so” when they leave their home. In fact, one sufferer said that turning off lights, etc., formed “the foundation of her mental health.” Slow leavers also have a fear of dehydration, which explains her keeping supplies of water close at hand. There’s no cure for this disorder. The fact that you only sigh shows that you’re some kind of saint. Dear Johnny: My husband is a wonderful man, except
Dear Rushed: Your husband obviously values punctuality. If it means, leaving a few essential items behind, it just shows he’s a decisive man of action, not a procrastinator. However, I am disturbed by his inability to replace the toilet paper correctly. This is an essential life lesson: “Over is right; under is wrong.” I would show him the original patent for TP, from 1891, which has a diagram of how to do it correctly. As for his habit of tossing your water, your husband is obviously an optimist, who can’t stand to see a glass that is half-empty. Dear Johnny: Our 23-year-old son is a hard worker, who never causes trouble. His only fault is that
stomps around the house when he walks. He weighs about 150 pounds, but sounds like a 300-pounder. He also slams doors. But, what really disturbs me, is when he slaps the leather couch. Why is he so noisy? Easily Startled Dear Startled: Your son is obviously a “Stomper.” Experts say that stomping may be a sign that the person is angry, agitated and frustrated. Therapists can teach him to walk softly. Some stompers even learn to tiptoe. Door slammers are also expressing anger. It’s OK for your son to express negative emotions, but slapping the couch is unacceptable. Dear Johnny: I’m so sick of living with my parents. It’s no wonder I stomp and slam things. Last week, I stomped so hard, I spilled my mom’s water. They fight about the stupidest things, like replacing toilet paper. They can’t blame me for that one, because I never replace a roll. I used to slap the couch, until I hurt my hand. Stuck Dear Stuck: I also have a 23-year-old son at home. Are you looking for a roommate? ■■John Rice is a columnist/private detec-
tive, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. He thoroughly enjoys life in the village and still gets a thrill smelling Red Hots, watching softball and strolling through cemeteries. Jrice1038@aol.com
Roos Rec Center unveils new logo, grand opening Clear your calendars for May 26
Officials received two: one from a woman in Oak Park and another from Yearbook. Officials chose Yearbook, primarily because they are based in Forest Park, Entler said. Yearbook signed a $6,500 contract in December to complete a brochure, fliers and more, said Larry Piekarz, executive director. The district will work with another public relations and marketing firm on additional services, Entler said. Officials have not yet chosen the marketing firm.

A sleek new logo has been unveiled for the new Roos Recreation Center, a sign of progress for the Park District of Forest Park’s soon-to-open fitness facility. “We wanted the logo to really talk about the sense of community,” said Rachell Entler, village commissioner and recreation and marketing supervisor at the park district. About a month ago, Forest Park’s Yearbook Studios approached officials about developing a logo for the center pro-bono. Entler said Yearbook co-founder Jef Anderson met with park district commissioners to talk about what ideas officials wanted people to associate with the new $6 million rec center; terms emerged like “family friendly,” “fun place to be for people of all ages” and “state-of-the-art.”

NEW LOOK: Forest Park’s Yearbook Studios creates new rec center logo. The park district also issued a request for proposals for designing the new insignia.
But the new logo is just the start of news at Roos which, after 10 months of construction, is set to be completed by mid-April, allowing time for a deep cleaning and decoration before the facility’s grand opening on May 26. Piekarz said the mild fall weather enabled workers to get ahead of schedule and have 70 percent of the work finished by the beginning of the New Year. D209 beefs up SAT test prep offerings After-school, Saturday programs and workshops for juniors to come By MICHAEL ROMAIN Staff Reporter
The Proviso Township High Schools District 209 school board recently took steps to expand the range of SAT test prep services it offers students. During a Dec. 12 regular board meeting, the school board voted unanimously to contract with Academic Approach, a Chicago-based test prep and tutoring company, to offer students SAT test prep programs after school and on Saturdays, and SAT strategy workshops for all juniors in the district. The total cost of the additional programs is not to exceed $65,475. The additional services offered to Proviso East and Proviso West students will be paid for with Title I funds, while services offered to Proviso Math and Science Academy students will be paid for with local funds. The district had already been offering a variety of test prep activities since the start of the 2017-18 school year in order to get students and teachers acclimated to the SAT. Spring 2017 marked the first time that all juniors attending Illinois public high schools were administered the SAT, as opposed to the ACT — which the state opted to replace in 2015. D209 officials said students who participated in the spate of test prep offerings already on hand earlier this year — which included instructional resources offered through
the free online school, Khan Academy, along with various classroom activities — performed better on the official state SAT than on the practice test administered in January. “The district average SAT total score increased by 60 points for participants, compared to 15 points for non-participants,” according to a document provided by the district last month. “Gains were also seen for participating students at each school, with East participants gaining 60 points compared to 32 for non-participants, West participants gaining 44 points compared to 24 for non-participants, and PMSA participants gaining 62 points compared to 55 for non-participants.” District officials said overall attendance rate for the existing test prep programs was 70 percent — 82 percent at East, 68 percent at West, and 84 percent at PMSA. Student-athletes at East and West would occasionally leave after the first half of Saturday morning sessions in order to participate in sporting activities, officials noted. But the new test prep activities, which start this month, will allow participants to take part in prep services both after school and on Saturdays. In order to participate, students need to apply and pay a small fee that will be refunded if they complete the program with at least a 90 percent attendance rate. The SAT strategy workshops for all district juniors will be held shortly before the official state SAT test is administered this spring.
“ From 2009 to 2017, 174 students from CPS schools with student populations that are at least 80 percent low-income and at least 80 percent African American enrolled at D209.” THE CHICAGO REPORTER
Report: Proviso among top destinations for CPS transfers According to a Chicago Reporter analysis published Dec. 19, “Chicago’s public schools lost more than 52,000 black students. Now the school district, which was majority black for half a century, is on pace to become majority Latino.” Many of the transferring students are now going to predominantly poor, black school districts in the south suburbs and northwest Indiana, the report shows. In the last eight years, about one-third of the roughly 15,000 students who left predominantly poor and black Chicago public schools enrolled in predominantly poor and black schools elsewhere. Proviso Township High Schools District 209 is among the top 25 school districts in the state receiving most of those transfers, data compiled and analyzed by the Reporter shows. From 2009 to 2017, the Reporter concluded, 174 students from CPS schools with student populations that are at least 80 percent low-income and at least 80 percent African American enrolled at D209.

Murano Midwest: An Art Glass Space Unlike Any Other
M
urano Midwest is an innovative gallery and store located in the heart of Oak Park with a unique focus on presenting amazing blown glass artworks. By bringing together artists from the famed Murano island of Venice Italy and their American counterparts, Murano Midwest stands alone as a premier destination for a curated collection of art glass, glass giftware and jewelry. Murano Midwest specializes in hot blown glass art. Many are familiar with the spotlight Dale Chihuly put on contemporary blown art glass. Gallery manager Janet Burson remarks that the art glass world has grown by leaps and bounds since Chihuly went to Murano to learn from and with Murano. Today, Italian artists continue to push the envelope, moving beyond their roots in factory glass workshops to create impressive contemporary pieces. American artists, who came later to the glass blowing tradition, are truly coming into their own and re-invigorating the art form. Murano Midwest’s curated space features the work of many leading and emerging glass artists working today.
Maestro Afro Celotto worked with Chihuly in those early days, along with Pino Signoretto and the legendary Lino Tagliapietra. He is an amazing Italian glass artist who seemingly paints in glass. His brilliant palette inspired by colorful homes on his childhood in Burano Island near Venice. Midwestern artist Ben Tullman, creative director of Chicago’s Ignite Glass Studio, first encountered glass blowing as an adolescent suffering from depression and learned about making glass beads as a form of therapy. Today, his glass blowing skills rival those of the Murano masters. Inspired by Ben’s successful recovery and passion for glass blowing, his parents, Trish and Glenn Tullman, also founded Ignition Community Glass, a non-profit organization offering free programs in glass blowing for at-risk youth in the Chicago area. Murano Midwest helps by selling the beautiful inexpensive giftware made by these students. American Alexis Silk stands midway between
Murano and Chicago. She received her BFA at the School of the Art Institute but now lives in Italy. Alexis, the only “Maestra” (woman master glassblower) on Murano, is known for sculpting conceptual art based on striking large scale nude figures. Commanding a team of up to six assistants to handle the immense figures, Alexis sculpts the massive forms freehand in molten glass. As just a few of the artists whose work is available at Murano Midwest, Burson says this trio provides a sampling of the way the space brings together the traditions of Italy with the innovations of the American artists. Murano Midwest holds cocktail receptions on Thursday and Friday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m., and the events are the perfect introduction to the glass blown art works. Through January 28, 2018, Murano Midwest will be showcasing Contemporary Movements in Murano Glass. Located in the heart of Oak Park at 701 Lake Street, Murano Midwest is open on Thursday thru Sunday and also by appointment. For more information visit www.muranomidwest.com or call 312.755.0000.

He also submitted three different questions at that time for the 2017 ballot, which prevented an anti-gaming referendum from being voted on. Only three questions are allowed on each ballot, according to state law. “The only reason we circulated those six petitions is because they started going after another petition to ban something without seeing how it did,” Hosty said in a recent interview. He also questioned the validity of Let Forest Park Vote’s petition signatures. Meanwhile, Let Forest Park Vote has questioned the timeliness of Hosty’s upcoming questions, only one of which addresses electronic gambling. The state’s 2017 local election official’s handbook is vague about the time frame on submitted questions. Still, “there’s some question as to how long they can remain valid to go on to the next ballot,” Kuehn said of Hosty’s question, adding: It’s “a matter of legal interpretation; our lawyer says those should not be on the ballot.” The Cook County Clerk must now complete a signature review of Let Forest Park Vote’s names, deciding if the petitions are

valid. That examination has not yet been scheduled, and the two groups will not reconvene for another hearing until after the records exam is complete. A spokesman for the county clerk said they hoped to have the signature review complete by Jan. 21. If Let Forest Park Vote’s signatures prove valid, lawyers from each side will then battle to decide whether or not Hosty’s questions are timely enough to be debated on the March 2018 ballot. The Cook County Clerk said Hosty’s 2016 questions — if valid — would block Let Forest Park Vote’s video

gaming question off the ballot. Kuehn said his group’s question would then move to the November ballot, provided there’s room. Kuehn said so far no one has filed questions for that ballot. Hosty, who recently moved to River Forest, said he filed a Freedom of Information Act to the village after Let Forest Park Vote submitted their petition to get a copy of their signatures. He then entered each name and address into an excel spreadsheet and cross referenced their signatures and homes listed to see if there were duplicates.
“It wasn’t a simple program to write,” Hosty said. “I’m a very determined person.” He said he found at least 475 people who signed the petition at least twice, some of them four times. In a letter to the Forest Park Review editor, he said he found more than 975 signatures not registered, not at the address listed, not alive, or not listed in Forest Park. Hosty said he knows some of these people have died because he attended their funerals. “You’re not just right because you have the moral high ground,” Hosty said of Let Forest Park Vote’s efforts, adding: “I think those who complain about how we did it are just complaining because we did it better. We got six questions on the ballot in a day. They failed.” Let Forest Park Vote is represented by attorney Ed Mullen. James Nally is representing pro-gaming forces. Nally was hired by James Watts, owner of O’Sullivan’s Public House.

Half-hearted robbery attempts come to naught A man attempted to rob a gas station, fast-food restaurant and car maintenance facility on Jan. 6. Forest Park police arrived about 3 p.m. at Thornton’s, 601 Harlem Ave., where a cashier told officers that a man dressed in black attempted to rob the store with a knife. Five minutes later, Oak Park police responded to a call from Wendy’s, 11 N. Harlem Ave. in Oak Park, where an offender matching that description attempted to rob the eatery. The Wendy’s cashier told officers a man dressed in a black coat with fur edges entered the store about 3:05 p.m., approached her register and pointed a knife at her, saying, “Give me all the money in the register.” The offender, who said he had a gun, fled the store and went south on Harlem Avenue. No loss was reported. About 2:45 p.m., someone matching the description entered Jiffy Lube, 215 N. Harlem in Oak Park, and asked for money, although no attempted robbery took place.
Tool theft Upwards of $1,000 worth of tools disappeared from a truck parked at HOBO in the Forest Park mall on Jan. 3. A Round Beach Lake man had parked his Chevrolet van at 7630 Roosevelt Road about 12:30 p.m., according to the police report. He entered the store, and 30 minutes later came out to discover someone had punched out the side and rear locks to his truck, and took a jigsaw, nail gun, saw, and floor gun, valued at more than $1,000.
Phone stolen On Jan. 5, a woman wearing a black leather jacket walked

into Citgo, 7323 Randolph St., about 10:15 a.m. The store employee told police he had been stocking shelves and talking on his Bluetooth earpiece when the woman entered the store. The woman shopped near the front shelf, and when she left the store, the man’s earpiece stopped working. He walked to the front of the store, and discovered his cell phone, valued at $975, was gone. The store employee walked outside and saw the woman walking north on Belvidere Avenue then dart into an alley between buildings. The employee told police he recognized the woman, that she’s a regular customer, whom he believes lives in the area.
Post Office theft A Joliet woman’s phone was stolen while she worked in the U.S. Post Office’s Bulk Mail Center, 7500 Roosevelt Road, on Dec. 31, according to a police report. Offenders took the LG Phone at some point between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
License plate theft Someone removed the rear license plate from a Chevrolet sedan parked at SP+ Parking, 711 Desplaines Ave., about 4:18 p.m. on Jan. 3, according to a police report. The sedan belonged to Vibro/Dynamics, an industrial equipment supplier based in Broadview.
Wallet theft
According to surveillance footage, two women went into a Currie Motors employee’s desk drawer about 1:30 p.m. and

stole her wallet on Dec. 29. The Cicero woman said the wallet contained her Illinois ID and driver’s license, Old Navy credit card, Chase credit card, Chase debit card and Best Buy credit cards. The offenders then exited at 8401 Roosevelt Road in a BMW SUV. The victim told police someone attempted to use her credit card in Chicago.
Train track victim Police rescued a man from the CTA tracks about 12:06 p.m., Dec. 30, after he got high and jumped on the rails. Officers arrived at 711 Desplaines Ave., after CTA employees called police about a man who was lying on the tracks with his head resting on the third rail. They recognized the man from a previous incident when he was high on PCP, a powerful anesthetic. The CTA supervisor told police the power was off on the rails. Police called for the man to get up, but the man refused to move and made unrecognizable statements. Officers then jumped on the tracks and pulled him up. Once on the platform, the man told officers his name and repeated “PCP” several times. Police handcuffed him for safety because he appeared high on drugs and was possibly suicidal. The man then asked, “What happened?” and said he did not remember lying on the tracks. Officers removed his clothes to check for injuries, and discovered a laceration on the right side of his head, and two zip-lock bags containing suspected cocaine. The man was transported to Loyola Hospital for treatment and a mental health evaluation. These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Dec. 30, 2017 to Jan. 7, 2018, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.

ing, and most of the electrical and plumbing. Two pillars, which once framed the old Roos Cedar Chest Factory entrance on the site, have also been set up in the lobby of the rec center, as a reminder of the importance the Roos roots in Forest Park. The Forest Park Review once described the old, 18,000-square-foot factory as the town’s “largest manufactury,” employing 400 locals to build cedar bridal chests. Yet to be completed in the homestretch to meet grant deadlines is the gym floor and the installation of light fixtures on the inside of the facility. This spring three fitness stations, benches, and a ninja warrior obstacle course for teens and preteens will be readied for use outside the building. Piekarz and his board are especially excited to be starting the last phase of construction because the whole project has been something of a marathon. Work really began back in 2013 with the demolition of the Roos building. Then came the toxic clean-up required by the Environmental Protection Agency, during which an underground tank was discovered unexpectedly and had to be disposed of. That was followed by funding uncertainty caused by Springfield politicians’ inability to agree on a budget. “I am praying that the state of Illinois comes through with the money we’ve been promised,” Piekarz said, noting that they

CONSTRUCTION ZONE: The new Roos Recreation Center is seen under construction on Harrison Street in Forest Park. couldn’t apply for the $2.5 million Park and Recreation Construction grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources until half the work had been completed. Piekarz said another $400,000 grant — called the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development — from the state’s Department of Natural Resources won’t be paid until work is done. Both of these grants have already been matched by sources like the increased tax levy approved in a referendum by Forest Park voters. Still, the inherent uncertainty in the funding process has led to the park board being fiscally conservative and “squirreling away money” in case the state doesn’t come through with the expected funding, Piekarz
said. He said officials have already spent $400,000 from a Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity grant. On Feb. 10, the park district will begin staffing the new rec center by hosting a job fair for prospective part-time and seasonal employees, including day camp counselors, front desk staff, sports coaches and more. No full-time employees will staff the new facility. Entler said Roos is looking to expand its volleyball, basketball, floor hockey and kickball programs. “We’ve got a list of things to start off with, but if the kids come to us interested in trying something, now we have the ability to do that because we have control of our gym space,” Entler said.

DEVELOPMENT Rush to residency from page 1 more. His wife, Maura, even convinced her family to move from River Forest to Marengo with them, joining the tide of ex-pats from Oak Park and other villages who have recently moved to Forest Park. “The baby boomers are finished with work and want to come to Forest Park for a smaller envelope to live in,” said Steve Glinke, director of the Forest Park Department of Public Health & Safety. Indeed, new arrivals are coming to Forest Park later in life, after their kids have moved from home, looking to downsize, pay less in taxes and live close to the restaurants and shops along bustling Madison Street. Empty nesters’ recent arrival has spurred development of at least nine new residential and retail properties, which Glinke said is the most local development he’s seen since 2008, before the property bubble burst. Many of the new properties are being built by developers from Oak Park and other towns. “There’s always that sort of fun, ‘We got them, you didn’t’ or ‘They’re coming over to our town,’” Glinke said of neighbors like Oak Park. “But it’s not really a competition. We’re trains and automobiles; we’re not even both fruit.” Glinke said that while Forest Park doesn’t have a wellfunded organization like the Oak Park Economic Development Corporation, a group that works to bring businesses to town, Forest Park does offer a few things that some of its neighbors can’t: small lot sizes, a walkable downtown, and easy access to transportation. For Chicagoans, Forest Park lot sizes are huge, and also offer more green space, a walkable/bikeable downtown, and proximity to public transportation or the Eisenhower Expressway. Compared to River Forest and Oak Park, local lot sizes are significantly smaller, more like Berwyn’s. But “Berwyn’s got the bungalow belt, it’s block after block of Chicago bungalows,” Glinke said, noting that the village hired the Chicago-based Muse Community + Design firm, Jan. 8, to help with day-to-day planning in Forest Park. Architectural diversity, small lot sizes, low taxes and more have driven the moving vans to Forest Park. Glinke estimated about 75 percent of the village’s new arrivals are empty-nesters like Zinni, who has long been investing in Forest Park. Zinni, 61, an architect, bought the building on the 400 block of Marengo Avenue in November 2014. His daughters, Mia and Mary, had already moved out of the house, one to San Francisco, the other in downtown Chicago. While life on the 700 block of William Street was inspiring — the River Forest block represents the first Prairie School planned development — Zinni realized the empty bedrooms at 707 William St. were not. “River Forest was great for my kids who got a great education, but we had much more house than we needed beyond one or two days out of the year,” Zinni said, adding, “Some of those bedrooms nobody ever went into — except the cleaning lady.”

ROOM TO GROW: (Clockwise from top) Mark Zinni’s top floor, fully renovated condo unit. The second floor unit kitchen. Zinni’s renovated hall bathroom. The renovated second floor dining area and living room. None of the space at his open-plan home at 428 Marengo Ave. is under-utilized. Zinni estimates he also pays about a quarter of the taxes in Forest Park that he did in River Forest, although his house is much smaller. He uses the cost savings to vacation more — memorable recent trips include Spain and Mexico — pay for his daughter Mia’s wedding, and go out to eat at least once a week at Francesca’s Fiore, 7407 Madison St. “I’ve seen sales go up in Forest Park from people moving out of Oak Park,” said Jody Jay, general manager at Francesa’s. “It’s more and more because people can’t afford to live in Oak Park.” Mischa DeHart, a restaurateur and broker (@properties), said she, too, started developing in Forest Park because the property taxes were too high in neighboring towns. Although DeHart lives in Oak Park, she’s completed three
projects in Forest Park, even serving on the village council’s economic development committee. Now the DeHarts plan to have their two apartments, office and retail property at 7435 Madison St. ready to lease in April. Husband Jacob DeHart will relocate his tech company, Thrilled, from the West Loop to the Madison Street office space. The DeHarts are seeking $30 per square foot for the 1,038-square-foot retail space and want to attract a business that will generate sales tax revenue for Forest Park. DeHart said she hasn’t decided on the asking price for the apartment yet. “Some towns are difficult to work with,” DeHart said. “Forest Park is very easy, and approachable, and responsive, and will help you move things along.”

“I never would have even thought this would have turned out, it was so bad,” said Paul Wicklow, developer. “When we walked through in the beginning it was pretty scary. I don’t know how people were actually living in the house.” The second floor of the about 3,000-squarefoot new home will serve as the living space, with an open-floor plan and kitchen in the center of the room. “It’s for people who love dinner parties,” Wicklow said. Construction will finish in January. Wicklow said he has yet to decide on an asking price.

5. An unnamed developer has hired the Forest Park-based John Conrad Scheiss Architect services to represent and walk them through the village’s zoning and planning approval process for 7652 Madison St., the old Molly Malone’s bar. Scheiss will present to the village in February. The developer wants to build 36 residential units. 6. The Chicago-based Noah Properties wants to build 17 townhomes from 7791 to 7795 Van Buren St., at the old Seng Tire site. 7. A developer wants to build more apartments at The Residences at The Grove, 7757 Van Buren St. Glinke declined to name the developer.

It’s not about gambling
or a good part of 2017, Forest Park has allowed video gaming in taverns and restaurants in town. As proponents of gaming — largely owners of taverns and restaurants eager for a new revenue stream — had argued, the sky will not fall with the advent of slot machines in Forest Park. That has so far proven true. Not a spike in crime. Not an endless row of gaudy neon signs proclaiming your entrance into Pottersville or Berwyn. That said, the Review still strongly opposes government-sanctioned gambling in a bar, on a boat or at the 7-Eleven where people cough up money they need to the lottery. Our view on gambling will not change. But as we enter 2018, Forest Park faces a much greater threat than video gaming. And that is the continued assault on basic democracy, on voting, on citizens having a voice in their community. Over the past year that voice has been brazenly taken away by special interests while elected officials make pathetic excuses about their tied hands. Nonsense. When, in the past, Forest Parkers were asked by village government to express a collective opinion on video gaming, the anti-gambling response was overwhelming. That should have settled this issue long ago. However, the liquor lobby — both local bar owners and the gaming vendors who profit from every machine — organized, as is their right, and shut down democratic processes with a cynical effort to clog last fall’s election ballot with nonsense referendum questions. It worked then and it may be on the verge of working again as Mark Hosty, a former elected commissioner, a bar owner/manager on Madison, and now a former resident of Forest Park, has again proffered three goofball ballot questions — the legal maximum allowed. Hearings are underway on Hosty’s challenge to the 3,500 petition signatures gathered by local activists who just want a vote on the issue. And on the legitimacy of the ballot-clogging questions. We will see how this turns out. We’re not optimistic. But here’s a wider prediction: Municipal elections in Forest Park are now 15 months away. There is a growing and progressive activism in this village that started with successfully retaking the high schools from political hacks. Last year it focused on Forest Park taking a progressive position on immigration. This year we expect activists to organize across-the-board challenges to a mayor and village council who have colluded in denying citizens a simple straight-up vote on video gaming. This isn’t any longer about slot machines. It is about democracy in Forest Park. The village government can keep its nickels from gaming. The conversation now is about electing new leaders.

Take a kid to the pool …
y brother took his family to Orlando last week, and we flew down halfway through their trip to join them. I have spent a little bit of time in Orlando these last few years, but always professionally. Going for fun, particularly someone else’s, was a different matter. We flew in on a Thursday afternoon, so as to arrive in time for a dinner marking my youngest niece’s seventh birthday. We went to Kobe Ichiban, one of those hibachi-table, sound-and-fury places where the cooks noisily chop things and flick shrimp tails into the vent hood. Seven fell asleep about halfway through dinner, so she missed the staff beating a drum and singing what I assume was “Happy Birthday” in Japanese. We took phone-video of it for her and made fun of ourselves and birthdays past: Grownup 1: She shouldn’t feel bad. I’ve fallen asleep at several of my birthday dinners. Grownup 2: At least she’ll remember it. I have no memory of turning 30. Grownup 1: Maybe we shouldn’t have recorded it. I’m glad no one recorded mine, you know? Grownup 3: RIGHT? And when we tell her what she missed? Like, “Hey, Seven, you fell asleep last night but only after you put on the hat” and she’ll be like “OMG I WORE A HAT? Please tell me no one took pictures. Did I sing?” Grownup 2: “And then we carried you to the car.” Grownup 1: Been there. They had been at the Magic Kingdom that day, so the next day was a Pool Day. Which was fine with the kids. Every parent I know has a story of taking their kids somewhere awesome like Alaska or Italy and having the overwhelming top choice of things to do on the trip and #1 Most Beloved Memory being “the hotel pool.” I don’t know why parents even go on trips. I remember my father taking my brother and me on “summer trips” to the Holiday Inn in Hillside just west of Mannheim Road off the Eisenhower. There was a pool and a Pac-Man machine, which was plenty for two days’ worth of entertainment. Those were great trips.
My dad is a genius. Saturday we walked around Universal Studios’ “CityWalk,” which is how Universal has brilliantly monetized the walk between their parking lots and Harry Potter World. It’s a straight-up mall, basically, where every store not in the food court features souvenirs. There’s miniature golf, too, a round of which costs as much as walking nine at Meadowlark. We had promised Sunday to Animal Kingdom as everyone’s Christmas present. Animal Kingdom is a cross between a drivethrough safari park and what would be called “Africaland” were it in the Magic Kingdom. I am not a Person of Disney — eight years watching The Mouse dismantle my beloved ABC Radio soured me on Mickey’s business practices — so I don’t know how much one should expect to go out-of-pocket on a day at Disney. An hour or two of Googling left me more lost: As with air travel and mortgage options, turns out there is an entire industry devoted to making sure you choose your Disney tickets more or less at random because you are completely confused and totally frustrated. I am certain, at least, that I did not walk away with a timeshare. One of the wrongs the current generation of my family is committed to righting is the idea that you should spend money to go places but that all souvenirs are “a waste of money.” (Another is the idea that you should only do “educational” things. In our direct experience, what obsessing over “educational” travel leads to is adults who enjoy farty noisemakers, roadside attractions, and professional wrestling.) The generation behind us will not suffer the same fate. Souvenirs are not wasteful. Souvenirs are, for kids, most of the joy of travel. We left Animal Kingdom’s Souvenir Costco with a giant Stitch, several pairs of character socks, a garish yellow Minion hoodie, and a miniature Frozen dollhouse for the adult who felt herself most deprived of fun souvenirs as a child. We also ate a bunch of ice cream sundaes for dinner, rode both the largest and the smallest roller coaster, got sunburns, and had four meltdowns between the exit and bed. It was a grand day.

we have to protect the financial viability of Forest Park. With the constant attacks on the business community, how much outside investment do you think people will make in this town? Not only will we not attract new investment, but it also devalues the investments made by businesses that are already here. I am often asked why this business or that business is investing in another community instead of Forest Park. The answer is simple, people who invest do not like uncertainty. I will continue to lead a charge against those who play on emotions to serve their purpose instead of presenting facts. It is not about a vote, it is about hurting businesses and the local government for future political purpose. Do not believe the whisper campaign, look at the facts.

I would like to take a moment to address a few items that were brought up in the recent article regarding video gaming and the recent filing of a petition to ban video gaming throughout Forest Park. The people who are supporting the petition are trying to frame the conversation about this topic as being pro-democracy and not anti-gaming or anti-business. This could not be further from the truth. The petition only has one stated goal, to ban video gaming. This is not a pro-democracy movement. This is a small group of people who are in to win at all costs, no matter what it does to the community. This topic pitted neighbor against neighbor before gaming was legalized. Now that we have about 6 months of real data, it has proven not to be the horrible destroyer of our community fabric that it was being sold as when 75% of the petitions were signed over 15 months ago. The Village has very wisely put into place strict regulations to make sure our town does not look like a mini Las Vegas. The sky has not fallen and revenues are starting to flow into the Village coffers. We may not be able to cure the larger Village debt, but we are certainly helping the funding, not hurting it. So why are we challenging the petition? In a democracy, there are checks and balances. As the anti-gaming people certainly have the right to file a petition, the pro-video gaming people have the same right to challenge the petition. They claim to have 3,493 signatures. Here are some facts: 475 people signed more than once, several up to 4 times. On a signature review over 975 signatures were found to be not registered, not at the address listed, not alive, or not even listed in Forest Park. The language used in the petition stated that you were signing for the next scheduled election. That is not true. The anti-group held 75% of the petitions past the next election and presented them well over a year later. This has nothing to do with a glut of petitions on the ballot, but a lack of knowledge of how the system works. I will continue to fight within the laws

3 Benefits of This Brutal Winter Winter has tightened its grip on the Chicago area for the past couple of weeks, a far cry from the mild winters we have experienced recently. Higher utility costs, dangerous driving conditions and allaround discomfort are plaguing everyone. For the landscape, however, the snow and brutal cold provide benefits: 1. Snow is a fantastic soil Scott insulator, helping McAdam Jr. minimize the alternating of freeze and thaw cycles. Result: bulbs, perennials, groundcovers, and the roots of trees and shrubs are protected from potential damage. It also can limit how deeply the soil can freeze by buffering cold surface temperatures (bare soil will freeze deeper than snow-covered ground). 2. Snow cover helps conserve the moisture within the soil during the winter months. 3. Insect and disease pressures for the upcoming season should decrease. Some insect species are unable to outlast the cold in large numbers, which aids in controlling the population. About 80% of plant disease is caused by a fungal pathogen, but a cold winter minimizes the available moist, dead plant parts for fungi to thrive. So, go ahead and continue loathing the cold and snow all you like. Regardless of your outlook, come spring the brutally cold season we are enduring will have laid the groundwork for some gifts we will all reap.

St. Giles Family Mass Community
We welcome all to attend Sunday Mass at 10 a.m. on the St. Giles Parish campus on the second floor of the school gym, the southernmost building in the school complex at 1034 North Linden Avenue. Established in 1970, we are a laybased community within St. Giles Roman Catholic Parish. Our Mass is family-friendly. We encourage liturgically active toddlers. Children from 3 to 13 and young adults play meaningful parts in each Sunday liturgy. Together with the parish, we offer Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a Montessori-based religious education program for children in grades K-8. For more information, go to http://www.stgilesparish.org/ family-mass-community or call Bob Wielgos at 708-288-2196.
