Cemetery puts the frown on Clown Week Annual August celebration canceled by Woodlawn’s parent company By THOMAS VOGEL Contributing Reporter

W

oodlawn Cemetery’s Texasbased parent company has cancelled the annual International Clown Week celebrations held by an outside group at Showmen’s Rest, a historically significant plot inside the burial ground. The yearly event, which has happened every August for the last 17 years, commemorates the victims of a 1918 train-ontrain crash in Indiana that killed dozens of members of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus. Fifty-six victims are buried at Woodlawn, Cermak Road and Desplaines Avenue, according to the website of The Showmen’s League of America, an industry association that bought a burial plot at Woodlawn in 1917 where the victims are interred. A spokesperson for Dignity Memorial, a Houston-based network of cemeteries, funeral homes and cremation facilities that includes Woodlawn, sent a statement to the Review confirming the cancellation. “We will no longer host Clown Week at Woodlawn Memorial Park. We are committed to preserving Showmen’s Rest for visitation and remembrance in anticipation for See CLOWN WEEK on page 7

In with the new − The interior design aesthetic of District House

n just under a year, District House will begin to deliver modern urban residences, located at a prominent corner in the heart of Oak Park. Similar to the project’s bold exterior, the interiors will reflect a new aesthetic not commonly found within Oak Park. The project’s 28 residences are dominated by floor-to-ceiling glass, incorporating an open concept great room containing the kitchen, living area, and dining room. Each unit offers one or two glass filled walls, featuring 10 foot floorto-ceiling glass (14 foot at the Penthouse level), delivering a dramatic, bright and open space in each unit. Bedrooms are designed to be quiet and secluded, with appropriately scaled windows balancing privacy and light. The bedrooms give way to spa-inspired luxury bathrooms. For many, this new aesthetic also represents a lifestyle shift. District House buyers navigate this shift with the help of designer Jackie Jennings, a longtime collaborator with Ranquist Development. Jennings was drawn to the project for its bold, contextual design in a community renowned for architecture: “I fell in love with the project as soon as I saw the renderings.” One of the most important rooms in today’s home is the kitchen, and Jackie has worked closely with Italy’s Archisesto to design kitchens that meet the needs of

and the historic character of Oak Park.” The process of selecting finishes is personal, explains Jennings: “I truly enjoy the process of getting to know each buyer’s unique story and their hopes for the new home. When I first meet with future residents, we spend time getting to know each other — talking about the new lives they expect to lead upon moving into the home and incorporating those expectations into the details of the home. We adjust kitchen details to suit the needs of different styles of cooking, electrical to accommodate decorative or task lighting, or color palettes based on personal tastes and preferences. Each homeowner has a unique perspective and as a result, no two homes are ever the same.”

today’s discriminating buyer, whether they intend to achieve a modern or more transitional aesthetic. “We designed kitchens that blend modern design with softer, rustic finishes. When choosing the finish materials I knew there had to be a special blend that worked well with both the modern architecture of District House

Construction progress on District House continues and the project is now 50% sold, with limited availability across several tiers (and one tier now sold out). The window to personalize finishes is rapidly narrowing, so if you’ve considered District House there is no better time than right now to take the next step. Graduating from college, along with my son

ast week, I corrected the 60th and final term paper for my son, Mark. I felt like I had completed college for the fourth time. Mark graduated from Grace College, in Warsaw, Indiana, after earning his degree in Business & Marketing. He’s our fourth kid to complete college and it was the end of an era. No more endless drives down US 30, or over icy roads in Michigan. No more lugging stuff up to third floor dorm rooms or apartments. We’re done carrying around that dormsized refrigerator that was so perfect for a six-pack of, uh, pop. We also said goodbye to the dorm-sized microwave. No more mountains of wash coming home for the holidays. No more trips to Target to stock up for the semester. No more difficult roommates. No need to find co-signers for college loans. Spring-breaking is over. Summer jobs are coming to an end. No more urgent calls to cover a shortfall. No more worrying about credits, or if they’ll have enough to graduate. No more campus tours, or meet-and-greets with the faculty. No more calls from the financial of of-

fice. No more concerns they will fall in love with someone from another state — and move there. No more rushing to class in their beater cars or on late-night excursions in search of food. The last chicken surprise cafeteria meal has been consumed. The last shift has been completed at the campus job. No more codes of conduct to break, or obey. Eight a.m. math classes are cancelled. No more pricey textbooks to purchase. No reason to cheer for sports teams like the Trolls and the Lancers. The college sticker will come off the rear window. No more leafy campuses to stroll. No urgent need to take out the laptop. No more droning lectures, or scintillating classes, taught by passionate professors. Mid-terms are terminated. Finals are finalized. Homework is no longer hanging over heads. Study groups are disbanded. Intramurals are over. Packing a car with classmates for a road trip will not be on the itinerary. Study abroad is over. All-nighters are but a memory. The curtain has come down on watching cult movies with your buddies. Late-night discussions about the great truths of life are curtailed. Getting greeting cards

De-littering Lehmer Community service is part of being a Cub Scout. On May 7, Scouts from Pack 109 decided to “Make the World a Better Place,” by picking up litter as one of their service projects. When Briana Villarrubia, scout mom, reached out to Forest Park Public Works for permission, they went beyond a thumbs up by supplying trash bags and the trash pickers. It was a perfect afternoon for Cub Scouts to spend a few hours picking up litter along Lehmer Street from the Community Garden near Harlem Avenue to Lathrop Avenue. in the mail with checks has been halted. Like his three older siblings, Mark has entered that uncomfortable place called the real world. Sleeping-in till noon will be rare. Dorm-style clutter will be cleaned up. Resumes will be updated and cover letters polished. Job interviews will be scheduled. A full-time job will be sought. Thankfully, Mark has a strong work ethic and a good attitude, doing his best at whatever job he’s had. Hopefully, he’ll find one in his field of study. If not, he can join the legions of college grads laboring in unfamiliar territory. Work is not an option when student loans, the scourge of their generation, have to be repaid. Mark should look back on his school career with pride. He was always conscientious about his assignments and stayed out of trouble. We welcome him home, but the dynamic has changed. It’s not so much parents and child, it’s three roomies just trying to get along. Now that I’m finally finished with college, I’m going to miss it. I told Mark it had been a privilege to correct the 60 papers, to see what a deep thinker he is and what a good writer he has become. I’d be even prouder, if he could get his plate to the dishwasher. ■ John Rice is a columnist/private detective, who has seen his business and family thrive in Forest Park. He thoroughly enjoys life in the village and still gets a thrill smelling Red Hots, watching softball and strolling through cemeteries.

Proviso Math & Science ranks high in US News listing Magazine’s annual report has PMSA 32nd in Illinois By THOMAS VOGEL

U

Contributing Reporter

S News & World Report named Proviso District 209’s Math & Science Academy (PMSA) the 32nd best high school in Illinois in its annual rankings list, released April 25. PMSA was 1,044th in the publication’s national rankings, earning a “silver” designation, an improvement from its 2016 “bronze” award. D209’s other two schools, Proviso West and Proviso East were listed as “unranked” in the US News national rankings. PMSA, since its founding in 2005, has outperformed Proviso East and West. It is a selective magnet school for the district’s “academically gifted and talented youth,” according to its website. According to the Illinois Report Card, the state’s official source, about 70 percent of PMSA students are “ready for next level.” At Proviso East, the percentage is 2.7 percent. At Proviso West, the percentage is 5.3 percent. “We value the results because they represent how well we prepare our students for post-secondary education and beyond,” PMSA Principal Bessie Karvelas wrote in an email to the Review. “Rankings compare districts and they compare schools. Competition is a good thing and we definitely live in a competitive world. Why not strive to be

Water main project moves through village Work from Harlem to Circle on south side expected to be complete by July 15 By ROBERT J. LIFKA Contributing Reporter

Work will continue this week on Fillmore Street in Forest Park for the installation of a water main to be used by the Brookfield-North Riverside Water Commission. The project, which began last month, involves the installation of a 12,100-footlong, 36-inch ductile iron water main from Harlem to Hannah avenues, where it will connect to an existing 20-inch pipe owned by the water commission. The overall project started last year with similar work in Oak Park. The connection at Hannah is scheduled to be complete today (May 17), allowing mainline installation from Hannah to Circle Avenue to begin May 18. Auguring under Harlem, which began earlier this month, is scheduled to be completed Fri-

day. Project officials said alleys are open but garage access along Fillmore is limited. The project is scheduled to be completed by July 15. The entire roadway will be reconstructed, including new curbs and gutters and removal and resetting of the original brick paver blocks, removal of which was completed last week. The parkway will be restored up to the sidewalk and ADA compliant sidewalks will be installed at each intersection. Project officials said contractors have been informed that the start times, 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. on Saturdays, will be strictly enforced. Street sweeping is scheduled on Friday, beginning at 1 p.m. Forest Park officials noted that the project is solely funded by the BrookfieldNorth Riverside commission and no vil-

lage funds are being expended. Residents fronting Fillmore will receive notices identifying driveway service interruption. During the construction period, there will be no parking along Fillmore. Alley access will be maintained. Updates are being posted on the village website, www.forestpark.net. To access the updates, search Village Improvement Program. In the works for two years, the $17 million project is designed to provide a supplemental water main for the water commission, whose principal water supply comes via a pipe built in 1938, which is nearing the end of its useful life. The commission, which supplies water to Brookfield, North Riverside, Lyons and LaGrange Park, wants an emergency supply line in case any portion of the old concrete water main fails or if service needs to be interrupted to make repairs to it.

develop the rankings and scored schools based on several factors, including school performance on proficiency tests compared to others in a given state, graduation rates, “disadvantaged” student performance and college-readiness. US News and RTI used those metrics, along with some other requirements, to examine 28,496 schools across the United States, and gave gold, silver or bronze labels to the 6,041 top-performing schools. The top 500 schools received “gold” rankings. “We are proud of our school community’s commitment to academic excellence as it continues to demonstrate high levels of educational attainment,” D209 Supt. Jesse Rodriguez said in an April 25 press release. “The designation shows, once again, the potential of PTHS D209. We are Proviso Proud.” Karvelas echoed Rodriguez’s sentiments. “We are elated with the 2017 ranking,” Karvelas said in the press release. “These wonderful results would not have been possible without our teachers and students, who continue to be proud of their school and their accomplishments. D209 spokesperson Cynthia Moreno called the award a “district-wide achievement” in an email to the Review. “Through a focused approach, where programming aligns to our mission and vision, we will continue to develop, support and sustain effective programming where meaningful and excellent opportunities are provided for all students,” Moreno wrote.

WALK FRIENDLY

Designation renewed from page 1 The Walk Friendly Community program is sponsored by FedEx and operated by the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center. The program is supported by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, a national clearinghouse on bicycling and walking, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. “Forest Park is ideal for pedestrians because we’re small and you can get from one end of town to the other in pretty short order,” Calderone said. “I really enjoy seeing the community on foot, walking their dogs or going for a jog. “It’s not only a healthier lifestyle but it is also embraces the essence of being neighborly. Often you’ll see folks walking and waving at their neighbors or stopping to chat.” “We are impressed with all that you are doing,” said Dan Gilenne of the Walk Friendly Community program in informing Forest Park of the award. According to Village Administrator Tim Gillian, Forest Park is doing a lot and has been doing a lot for a long time. “Forest Park has always been a Walk Friendly Community because of its compact size and geographic relationships to the CTA Blue Line and Green Line, as well as Metra train line,” he said. Gillian noted Forest Park’s efforts to be walk friendly date back as early as 2000, when

village officials stressed the importance of making the design of Madison Street between Desplaines and Harlem avenues more pedestrian-friendly and accessible. “We were first in the area to provide bump outs at the intersections to make the distance shorter for a pedestrian to cross,” he explained. “That design feature also acted to slow traffic as it proceeded on Madison. We carried those same elements onto the design of Jackson and Harvard.” The walk-friendly efforts continued when Forest Park passed a complete streets policy. “In 2011 we adopted our complete streets policy and have been working toward making our town more pedestrian-friendly ever since,” Calderone said. “Where feasible, with each new roadway we now include narrowing of pedestrian crosswalks to make the crossing of our streets safer.” “This policy dictates that whenever the village is doing a street project, it considers all forms of transportation in the design,” Gillian said. “That includes cars, bikes, pedestrians and wheelchairs. “In our new project on Roosevelt Road, the final product will have several features that will make it easier for pedestrians to cross the busy roadway, including bump outs and safe zones in the middle.” The effort began as part of a $145,000 grant Forest Park received from Cook County through its Model Communities program, which was an offshoot of the Communities Putting Prevention to Work program, run by the county’s Department of Public Health and funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Gillian also pointed to the addition of a sidewalk to complete a concrete path on south Desplaines to 22nd Street; a pending grant application to add a new sidewalk on Van Buren Street from Madison to the CTA station; and the last project on Madison west of Desplaines, which includes many of the pedestrian enhancements present elsewhere in the village. “All the new crosswalks are completed in very exacting Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) specifications to make the intersections easier for disabled people to navigate,” he added. In addition, he said Forest Park has been “adamant” in discussions with IDOT revolving around the possible expansion of the Eisenhower Expressway that the crossings on Desplaines and Circle include a dedicated bike lane and much wider sidewalks. “This project is still in the design phase but all drawings to date show these features as included,” Gillian said. Forest Park is among 10 communities recognized in the latest round of Walk Friendly Communities announced last month. The Walk Friendly Community designation, awarded from bronze to platinum, is given to applicant communities that have demonstrated a commitment to improving and sustaining walkability and pedestrian safety through comprehensive programs, plans and policies. To date, 65 communities in the United States have been designated as Walk Friendly Communities. Chicago and Evanston are the only other communities in Illinois to be designated.

Yet another unattended car stolen A 28-year-old woman called police on May 13 to report that someone stole her 2013 Hyundai Sonata from the front of a residence in the 7400 block of Adams Street while she was unloading groceries. According to the police report, the victim said she left the unlocked vehicle running with the keys in the ignition while she dropped some kids off at the residence and dropped off some groceries. The victims said she was away from the car for about three minutes around 8:35 p.m. The victim reportedly used the GPS tracker on her cellphone to locate the vehicle, which police found parked in the 7700 block of Taylor Street in Forest Park. The victim’s wallet, with its contents intact, was still inside the vehicle.

Victim arrested on warrant Forest Park police took into custody a 48-year-old Chicago man who was identified as the victim in an altercation on a CTA Blue Line train about 2:35 a.m. on May 8 after police learned the man had an active warrant for his arrest. Police responded to the Harlem Avenue platform after receiving a report of a fight on a train car. The conductor pointed out the victim, who told police he didn’t wish to pursue charges. But police took him into custody after learning he had an active warrant out of Cook County for a probation violation related to a drunken driving arrest.

Cops bust alleged drug dealer A Forest Park police investigation into an alleged drug-selling operation led on May 12 to the arrest of a 22-year-old Berwyn man and the recovery of drugs and paraphernalia consistent with someone selling drugs. Officers from Forest Park and Berwyn executed a search warrant at an apartment in the 1900 block of Harlem Avenue in Berwyn on May 12, arresting Jordan D. Armed robber holds up Forest Park sub shop A man armed with a gun made off with an undisclosed amount of cash from a Forest Park sandwich shop during a holdup on May 14 just before 11 p.m. Police responded to Submarine Tender, 200 Desplaines Ave., after receiving a 911 call of an armed robbery by a man wearing blue latex gloves and brandishing what appeared to be a chrome-plated 9 mm handgun. Surveillance cameras showed a black vehicle pulling into an alley behind the 200 block of Brown Avenue. The offender exited the vehicle and walked west toward the sub shop. He entered the store and pointed the gun at employees and one customer. According to police, an employee handed the man cash from the cash register and the offender walked back to his vehicle, dropping a $1 bill along the way. Police described the offender as a white or Hispanic male, possibly with brown facial hair in his 20s or 30s and weighing 200 pounds. He wore a navy blue hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head, light gray sweatpants and black gym shoes. No one was injured during the incident.

Good town for a stroll

I

t has been a strong and steady effort, moving Forest Park from a typical car-first culture to a community that takes active steps to make walking the town easier, safer and more enjoyable. True enough, Forest Park was built a century and more ago with the bones of a walkable town. Two el lines draw people and housing. The Metra is right there, too. The town is compact, the housing dense. But until 2000, Forest Park was caught up in that postwar mode of engineering everything to speed cars through town, to accommodate more cars. More lanes, more parking lots. The Madison Street downtown reduced to secondhand shops and bars as slowing things down to encourage retail or dining on the street just weren’t considered. Like most suburban burgs, Forest Park was not a town where walking or biking were encouraged. It was with the total remaking and rethinking of Madison Street at the turn of this century that the conversion began. The street was simply two traffic lanes. There were well-marked and enforced pedestrian crossings. Curbs were bumped out at intersections to make crossing safer. Sidewalks were widened to allow people to gather, whether for a neighborly conversation or for dinner. The efforts did not stop on Madison. A range of walkfriendly features have been spreading to the neighborhoods and the current remaking of Roosevelt Road includes components to tame that mighty mini-highway. This week for the second time, Forest Park was recognized as a “Walk Friendly” town by a national organization that measures walkability. Well deserved. This movement is good for making neighborhoods tighter and friendlier, it fosters good health, and it puts eyes on the street, which improves safety. In a moment when millennials may be rejecting our car culture in favor of ride sharing, bikes and a walk to the el, it also positions Forest Park as a great destination for younger residents and families who want to leave the city but have no interest in Lisle. God help us, Lisle.

PMSA ranks, East does not (yet)

Congratulations to the students, teachers and staff at Proviso’s Math & Science Academy. Again this year, the select admission school based in Forest Park placed strong in rankings published by US News & World Report. In fact, the school moved up a notch from bronze to silver this year. No doubt this is an accomplishment. And though we are always questioning of these ranking mechanisms, it is clear that good things are happening academically at PMSA. As always, here’s the challenge: What about Proviso East and Proviso West? They are “unranked” by US News. If you trust their methodology, here’s a number that could not be more stark. At PMSA 70 percent of students are “ready for the next level.” At East, less than 3 percent of students are “ready for the next level.” In a press release, the district calls the PMSA honor a “district-wide achievement.” Optimists would call that aspirational. Realists would say, good for PMSA but all the focus now is on East and West.

OPINION

C

Coming full circle on Circle Bridge

ircle Bridge was part of the 1953 original State Highway Authority plans, a single connection in the middle of town. Originally, Harlem, Elgin, Marengo, Circle, Hannah, Thomas, Beloit, Ferdinand, Lathrop and Desplaines were ground-level “through streets” with railroad crossings. To make way for the Congress Expressway, 75 homes or structures were “doomed,” according to the July 3, 1953 article in the Forest Park Review. This single bridge, between Harlem and Desplaines was to be the midway connection in Forest Park. By 1955, the Congress Expressway opened from downtown Chicago to Laramie and Forest Parkers were feeling the burdens of construction of the new highway and set out to demand a second overpass on Beloit. Mayor Meyer and commissioners got busy notifying all churches and organizations to bombard Governor Stratton and the state highway department with letters informing them that an overpass connection at Beloit was a necessity. Which they did, in full force, from Chamber of Commerce members to citizens, but as we can see, the pedestrian bridge at Beloit never came to pass (or overpass). It’s hard to imagine Forest Park without Circle Bridge, our central artery, well-traveled by locals. It’s even harder to imagine that the Circle Bridge was guarded by the modest rail, seen at the entrance and exit, until 1963 when the village council approved a bid for a fence to be erected (recently painted black by the Public Works Department). Now a half a century later, locals have left their mark on the bridge. From themes of social justice to local history (including former Review publisher Claude

JILL WAGNER

Photos courtesy Jill Wagner

Walker’s grandchildren), public services, volunteer organizations, dog park lovers, children, cat lovers, community groups, local businesses, schools, families who have stayed in town, and families who have left, everyone had a space on the bridge. The connection between the past and the future, marked by a single day of public art. Forest Park bloomed this Saturday, and the bridge was the perfect place for local renewal. Gratitude for the day was palatable as Mother Nature was on our side, novice and experts meeting to leave their mark on Circle Bridge. Across a span of 12 hours and much history, the bridge had a journey and a story to tell — a revitalization of many hands, hearts and missions.

God bless each and every one of you Thank you, Forest Park Review, for your support and help to spread the awareness of Krabbe Disease by publishing the article and pictures of Lana’s fundraiser in February. What a wonderful outpouring of love and support for the Shelton/Goodman families from friends, family

and many from Forest Park. Thank you to the great businesses in Forest Park that helped make the fundraiser a great success. A very special thank-you to the generosity and love shown by Mark Hosty of Healy’s & Lobos. He spent his time and energy, along with clos-

ing his businesses on a Saturday evening. The fundraiser was a great success because of all of you who supported the Shelton/Goodman families. God bless each and every one of you.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS

The week Lucky Lindy landed in the limelight The Lone Eagle, Lucky Lindy — or Slim, as he was known locally according to numerous articles in the Forest Park Review that year — took the first-ever solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean 90 years ago this week. The 33½ hour flight from New York to Paris in a custom-built “Spirit of St. Louis,” was completed by the young aviator, Charles Lindbergh, on May 20-21, 1927. Lindbergh, originally from Minnesota, lived in Forest Park after WWI. He was an airmail pilot at the Checkerboard Air Field, at 1st Avenue and Roosevelt Road. According to the Checkerboard Recreation Club, the legendary flight started in Maywood. Lindbergh was the slim, blonde fellow, who would hang around town with other aviators. He was said to have frequented the DeLuxe Restaurant at 7434 Madison (now Doc Ryan’s) and Albright Restaurant at 7522 Madison (now Angelo O’Leary’s) and Mader’s Tire Shop across the street. The new post office at 314 Circle sold this commemorative Lindbergh stamp the day it opened, July 1, 1927.
