2024 marks the 90th anniversary of the opening of Brookfield Zoo. As the Zoo celebrates this milestone, these photos will take you on a trip down memory lane.
Crowds gather to see the polar bears on opening day at Brookfield Zoo. On July 1, 1934, an estimated 58,000 guests attended. One of the local papers at the time reported an additional 25,000 were turned away due to parking and traffic issues.
Guests entering Brookfield Zoo through the South Gate entrance.
The dome roof for The Living Coast habitat is installed. The building, which is home to Brookfield Zoo’s Humboldt penguins, leopard sharks, and Pistachio, a critically endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, opened to guests on May 1, 1997. In more recent years, the Zoo’s important wildlife field work in Punta San Juan, Peru, has been highlighted.
In the early 1930s, animals, including giraffes, were delivered to the Zoo.
During the Great Depression, artisans with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) designed signage, stone animal figures, fountains and the old wooden directional markers.
Brookfield Zoo’s steam train—Brookfield, Salt Creek, and Western Railroad—ran on a 2½-mile-long gauge track that went around the Zoo’s perimeter. The train was christened in 1968. When construction began on the new Seven Seas Panorama on the east side of the park, the steam train was discontinued because the track ran through the construction site.
Cookie, a pink cockatoo, was a favorite among zoogoers. Over the years, Cookie’s popularity grew and he touched many people’s lives. He received many cards, letters, toys, and pictures from admirers around the world, and staff held an annual public birthday party for him. At his death in August 2016, Cookie was the oldest resident at Brookfield Zoo and the last remaining member of the original animals that first arrived in the early 1930s. He was certified by Guinness World Records as the oldest living parrot in 2014.
Birthday parties were held for Olga, the Zoo’s charismatic walrus, at the former Seven Seas Panorama, where she shared her pool with Amy, a harbor seal. In 1987 when the current Seven Seas opened, Olga was moved to Pinniped Point until her death in August 1988. Due to her enormous popularity, the Zoo held a memorial service for guests and staff on the East Mall and commissioned a life-size bronze statue of the beloved walrus, which can be seen on display at Pinniped Point.

Riverside
General Plan of Riverside, Olmsted, Vaux & Co. Landscape Architects, 1869.
Take a walk around Riverside and you might notice its unique, curvilinear streets, frequently populated by a diverse ecosystem of trees and birds. This landscaping is no accident, but rather the intentional design of architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, and also a major reason why the Village is considered a National Landmark.
In 1868, the Riverside Improvement Company hired Olmsted and Vaux to design the village. Over a century later, their work would lead Riverside to becoming a National Landmark.
“[Being a National Landmark] gives you a lot of national and international renown,” said Constance Guardi, Riverside Historical Commissioner and former Chair. “It means that you’re one of the most significant places in the United States.”
According to Guardi, Olmsted envisioned Riverside as a place of refuge away from the rapidly-growing city At the time, it was hard to find a nice place to live in Chicago unless you were wealthy.
Riverside was unique in 1868 due to its sidewalks, winding streets and large number of parks and green spaces. In planning the suburb, Olmsted prioritized “tranquility and serenity,” according to Guardi.
“[Olmsted] designed it so that anyone who lived here –whether they were a servant or whether they were the house owner – could enjoy the outdoors,” Guardi said. “The streets were recessed so that what you looked out on was green space rather than looking at roads.”
Throughout the years, Riverside has also attracted many architects, including Louis Sullivan, William Le Baron Jenney and Frank Lloyd Wright. Not only is the
Village of Riverside a National Landmark, but there are also four buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the F.F. Tomek House, the Avery Coonley House, the Arcade Building and the Benda House.
“The Riverside Improvement Company that hired Olmsted and Vaux got more than they anticipated,” Guardi said. “They got a treasure.”

BROUGHT TO YOU BY:
Amid rising inflation and an increase of national chains, grocery stores in Riverside and Brookfield are working to remain innovative and adaptable, offering a more personal shopping experience to their communities.
Riverside Foods, for example, has been family-owned since its founding in 1981. Peter Boutsikakis and his cousin, Anthony Garbis, bought the business from Boutsikakis’ mother in 2010. Before that, it had belonged to their grandfather.
“I basically grew up in here,” Boutsikakis said.
With more large, national chain grocery stores popping up, stores like Riverside Foods and Tischler Finer Foods have seen changes that require them to be
learn how to buy a little smarter, work with the different vendors as far as bridging deals, trying to create new deals to get better prices.”
Local stores are also facing a rise in inflation since the pandemic. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food-at-home prices rose by 5 percent in 2023, making it hard for independent supermarkets to keep their prices down.
But, independent stores also have unique benefits that national chains lack.
Boutsikakis said that being a small business allowed him to adapt quicker to the pandemic and inflation. He was able
Continued from page 31
to keep his shelves stocked and maintain stable prices by working with different vendors and cutting costs on utilities and advertising.
“A major difference between us and a major chain would be that we’re not locked into different promotional calendars or buying, like a lot of major chains are,” Boutsikakis said. “During the pandemic, we found that our shelves were replenished much better than some of the larger stores.”
Both Boutsikakis and Tischler have expanded their online shopping in recent years, especially as people have started to shop in different forms since the pandemic. Riverside Foods
also offers home delivery services for elderly customers.
As small businesses, Tischler and Riverside Foods play a role in the community that can not be recreated by a large chain.
“We also offer a personable experience, a human experience, that unfortunately has become a lot less popular nowadays,” Boutsikakis said. “We really have the human element that I’m proud of that goes through our staff and to our customers.”
Tischler said that his business tries to contribute to fundraisers and other community events as much as possible. They also open up their store for Girl Scouts

When Maiana Nelson was in seventh grade, she made her first environmental film, focusing on plastic pollution. She had been volunteering at the One Earth Film Festival for years, and when she heard about their young filmmaker’s contest, she knew it was right up her alley. Nelson was excited to receive an honorable mention for her work, but she didn’t want to stop there. She wanted to use the film to make “major impacts in the community,” so she screened it at her middle school, Hauser Junior High.
I want our generation to have the legacy of being the ones who decided to make a change.”
“I got the school to take out plastic straws from the lunchroom, which was one of my first major accomplishments that showed me that my filmmaking can go much farther than just making films,” Nelson said. “These films really have a possibility to make an impact.”
Now a senior at Riverside Brookfield High School, Nelson is still making films in addition to her other climate advocacy She’s particularly interested in food systems and had an internship with the Illinois Farm to School Network last summer, where she worked on creating
trainings to connect farmers with local school districts.
This past December Nelson attended the United Nations-sponsored Conference of Parties 28 climate conference in Dubai. She went with six other Chicago-area high school students as part of the youth environmentalist group It’s Our Future, affiliated with the Seven Generations Ahead nonprofit.
One of Nelson’s favorite moments from COP 28 was when she met Sylvester Ndumbi, an award-winning filmmaker who created a documentary called “Without Leaving Anyone Behind” that examines the energy transition as it relates to climate change policy.
“It really showed how powerful filmmaking can be and that that could be a potential career for me,” Nelson said.
Nelson’s passion for environmentalism is shared with her mom, who attended
COP 28 with her. The conference was an opportunity for Nelson to bring her mom along to one of her experiences, which was an exciting change after years of coming along to her mom’s environmental engagements.
“It was really cool to see those roles switch, and she was super excited to be there and see environmentalism at a global level as well,” Nelson said.
Both with her current and future work, Nelson hopes to promote thinking environmentally rather than economically, as well as being conscious about how the planet is treated.
“I want, in general, our generation to have the legacy of being the ones who decided to make a change,” Nelson said. “I want to encourage people in our generation to make sure that we’re leaving behind a planet that can sustain many generations in the future.”

Learn about our community response to COVID-19.
When Cantata Adult Life Services, formerly The British Home, was first founded nearly a century ago, it created a community of 24 retired men and women of British descent. Today it has a new name, an expanded set of services and residents of all nationalities, but the community spirit remains.
“It ’s always been very much family and home-oriented here” said Kevin Heraty, Cantata’s Chief Development Officer “We try to form, as best we can, a community that works for all, so that people, in their own ways, can live their best lives possible.”
Established in 1925 by the Daughters of the British Empire, the British Home originally only offered services to people of British descent. However, that hasn’t
We try to form a community that works for all, so that people, in their own ways, can live their best lives possible.”
been the case for over 50 years. This led Heraty and his colleagues to change the name to Cantata in 2012.
“Cantata has many meanings, but one of its iterations is it’s a musical piece for a soloist with accompaniment,” Heraty said. “The soloist is the senior we serve and their family, and the accompaniment is all the people and programs and services that Cantata can provide to help them serve their best life.”
Today, Cantata’s campus consists of a collection of buildings and gardens on 10 acres of land off of 31st Street in Brookfield. The original British Home building now offers skilled rehabilitation and physical therapy,
and the buildings constructed since then include independent living and assisted living communities.
Cantata also offers home services through their Take 2 program, which Heraty said aims to keep home care affordable while still ensuring stable hours, salaries and benefits for caregivers.
“Most care is delivered on an hourly basis,” Heraty said. “It gets costly And a lot of people don’t like having somebody sitting in their house all the time because they might not need them all the time.”
With Take 2, caregivers stop by many different homes for shorter periods of time, sometimes multiple times a day, keeping the cost down while also maintaining a stable schedule.
Heraty said that he hopes Cantata will continue to innovate in the future, taking traditional service models and asking if there is a better way to do things, as they did with Take 2.
“We have done good work here and served this community for many, many years,” Heraty said. “And will hopefully continue to do so for many more.”

This data represents sales of single-family homes and condo/townhomes in Riverside, North Riverside and Brook eld from March 1, 2023 to February 28, 2024. In addition to total homes sold and average sale prices, we’ve also included two stats: Market Time and Sales Price/ Listing Price Ratio that show how rapidly the current market is moving.
Market Time is the number of days a property is on the market from the time it is listed until the day that it closes. In “normal” times, a seller might put their home on the market and expect it to go under contract within a month or two. Following that, it might take another month for the home to close. A market time of 29 days, as we see for
Brook eld attached single-family homes, is an unusually low number that may indicate homes going under contract within days or hours of being listed.
Sales Price/Listing Price Ratio indicates the percentage of the listing price that a property was sold for. You might expect this number to be less than 100%, since buyers often try to negotiate discounts off the listing price. If the number is 100%, as it is in Brook eld, that means sellers are getting exactly what they are asking.
Our thanks to the Oak Park Area Association of Realtors for providing these statistics.

How long in Business:
Over 64 years
Why choose this area:
I have lived and have been involved in this community for over 50 years.
Greatest current business challenge: Keeping up with all the tax changes and Continuing Education Credits that are necessary for my multiple licenses, including my E.A. status.
What do you love about your work:
The people. I love the many people I have met. Your business philosophy: To treat clients the way I want to be treated. To treat them as I would treat an invited guest.
Greatest accomplishments:
Receiving the Woman of the Year Award, Cicero Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Award, Multiple Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow Award, Western Springs Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Millenium Award, Five Who’s Who Awards, State of Illinois Woman of Distinction Award, Ronald Reagan Gold Award and two times elected Village Clerk of Brookfield.
What have you learned:
I have learned that many people pay taxes unnecessarily. With just a little bit of pre-tax season advice, we can cut their taxes by a lot.
How long in Business:
Over 49 years
Why choose this area:
I wanted to do financial planning for people who really NEEDED financial planning. 40 years ago there were only financial planners for the rich.
Greatest current business challenge: Helping my clients remember investing is for the long term and to stick with their goals rather than trying to give into the ups and downs of the market.
What do you love about your work:
The people. My clients become my friends.
Your business philosophy: To invest my clients’ money as I would invest mine or my children’s.
Greatest accomplishment:
Being the first Waddell & Reed Representative to maintain 250 million of clients’ money under management & being inducted to Waddell & Reed’s Hall of Fame.
What have you learned:
I have learned that giving good finanical advice can help people turn their dreams into goals that can be reached.
