The question for those candidates in the council elections who are standing as “Independent” is “How Independent are You?” this question is particularly relevant in Clackmannan West Ward and Clackmannan North Ward. In the West Ward the Independent candidate, Eddie Carrick, was a portfolio holder in the previous Labour Administration. After failing to be re-selected by the members of the local Labour Party, he resigned and since then he has consistently voted with the SNP group on Clackmannanshire. Council. According to his comments recently published in the “Scotsman” newspaper he either over emphasised the truth for four and a half years or since December he has been unable to distinguish fact from fiction. How would he turn if elected? Attempt to return to Labour or stay loyal to his new found love of the SNP; after all they rewarded his treachery by making him second Depute Provost. In the north ward we have an Independent in Archie Drummond, who attempted to be endorsed as an SNP candidate. According to a prominent SNP senior statesman in the “Hillfoots” Archie only achieved two votes, allegedly including his own. Perhaps it was a forlorn hope to win an SNP endorsement, given he was the architect behind the labour victory over George Reid in 1979. For a prolonged period he was also a critic of Walter Macadam. Something the SNP seems unlikely to have forgotten or forgiven. The question you have to consider is, if elected will he be likely to remain independent or will he attempt to re-join the Labour Party or will an offer from the SNP entice him to re-join the party he recently resigned from? Dear weecounty,

I was wondering if the SNP group in Clackmannanshire would consider seeking a place on the United Nations or perhaps try to gain a position in the European Union. After all, within three months of gaining the Administration in Clackmannanshire Council, they have saved the place from wreak and ruin. Hallelujah, hallelujah, praise from the SNP. After reading the newspaper from the SNP, in which they have demonstrated that Rome may not have been built in a day, but Clackmannanshire could in three months, there is no stopping them. I encourage the SNP team to keep going, now that you have solved every problem in Clackmannanshire, no tackle the Middle East unrest, save the Euro, aim high and send another person to the moon. There really is no stopping the SNP, which is unless; they have exaggerated their three month record in power and taken credit where none is due. That would be a disappointment if the Super National Party were not all the Super. Peace loving citizen

Birthday Greetings only

Dear weecounty,

I received a copy of ‘The Thistle’ through my door this week, which for your readers who do not know what this is; it is the SNP election newspaper. 8 pages long, emphasis on long. A summary would be great the SNP party are and how awful the Labour party are. When will political parties learn, this sort of negative campaigning does not work. What is lacking is the vision for the future of Clackmannanshire in the SNP newspaper. Or perhaps it is just hidden within the tens of thousands of words that they are expecting voters to read.Have the SNP no polices, no manifesto, no ideas or even no hope for Clackmannanshire that they would prefer to share with their readers rather than 8 pages of possible slanderous defamation of other political parties. We want to hear what you have planned for Clackmannanshire, not what other political parties in your words ‘have failed to do’. Let all politicians from Labour, Conservative, Liberals, the independents and especially the SNP talk up to Clackmannanshire, rather than taking the community down. your faithfully John Smith

“Little Fish” invited to swim at Special Olympics Local lad to compete at games in Bath

C

oalsnaughton boy Gavin Millar, who will be 13 next week, has been invited to swim for Great Britain at next year’s Special Olympics in Bath. Known as “Our little fish” by his family, Gavin is, understandably, raring to get to Bath and return with a haul of medals. Mother Deborah will accompany him on the trip South; which they both hope will result in yet more medals for the talented swimmer who has won a total of 25 medals to date; 13 of those being Gold! After showing The Wee County News his medals, and putting them on for his photo – it looks like it wont be long until photos of him wearing all his medals will be a thing of the past. Gavin, who suffers from a number of conditions, related to Autism, such as ADHD, Coordination problems and learning difficulties is not the type to let it hold him back. He was recently taken off his medi-

cation completely after his mother and grandmother noticed a huge difference in his behaviour while taking the medication. It’s very pleasing to report that since then, his behaviour has improved drastically and Gavin himself also feels much better for it. A member of Arion SC in Stirling, which is run from the new pool next to Forthbank Stadium, Gavin just wants to get down to Bath and show to others that his disability doesn’t, and never will, hold him back. When asked about his chances, Gavin replied, in a matter of fact way, “ I’m going for gold!” The races are typically 25-50 metres in length and while Gavin is best at Breath Stroke, he will also be competing in the Back Crawl, Front Crawl and Freestyle events. Mum Deborah will be at poolside cheering him on. She says, “By the time I get back to Scotland I’ll be so hoarse that I’ll probably be unable to talk for a week!” Gavin’s Grandmother, who can’t make the trip due to baby-sitting duties, is very disappointed but will make up for it when her Grandson comes home with his medal haul…No doubt a special treat will be in store for the young swimmer… The event, which is held through August 28th until September 2013, is very costly and the Millar family are looking for local,

News Brief

Sickness Bug forcing ward Closures Sickness bug Norovirus has been the cause of over 1000 hospital ward closures in Scoittish hospitals over the last 3 years. Liberal Democrat health spokeswoman Alison McInnes drew attention to the devastating impact that the virus, known as “The Winter Vomiting Bug”, has had on the NHS. She believes the bug should be given a similar status to that of MRSA and Clostridium difficile. Figures released by the Scottish government show that 1088 wards were closed in Scotland during the period from late 2009 to the start of this year. Forth Valley reported 45 closures during the period.

What better way is there, after all, to make people aware of your company, other than having an advertisement on an Olympic hopeful’s shirt or tracksuit? Travel to and from the event is very

costly and other expenses must also be met. Any donations, however small, or large for that matter, would be very warmly received. Companies and individuals willing to give to a very worthwhile cause should contact the Wee County Office on 01259 404006 where details will be given.

Appearing at the court in relation to an incident on the 6th March 2011, when he refused, without reasonable excuse, to provide two breath specimens to arresting officers, Mr Lubkowski was eventually found guilty. Lubkowski, of Craigbank Sauchie, was fined £500 to be paid at a rate of £50 per month and also disqualified from driving for a year.

lva Bridge Club held an occasion at Tillicoultry’s Harvistoun Inn on last week in honour of Mr Alfred Moore, 93, who won the club’s championship this year. Mr Moore, who has been playing Bridge since 1939, has led a very varied and interesting life. Before the war, Mr Moore was the Featherweight Boxing champion of the Midlands at the age of 19. At the time he lived in Durham and future wife, Joan, was in Sheffield; where she was involved in training female recruits for the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Mr. Moore was stationed with the Royal Artillery, along with the Indian Army, to fight the Japanese forces in Burma in 1945. He was actually captured at one point but thanks to his colleagues, was rescued after only four or five hours in custody. After the end of World War 2, Mr Moore came home and worked for

n Thursday afternoon, a van driver was in a panic because the ticket machine wasn’t working and he was very fearful of receiving a fine. Police Officers attended where they told the driver, “Don’t worry about it today, the Traffic Warden is

off today so you’ll be okay!” The van driver, obviously chuffed with the outcome would not make a comment. Motorists thought that Christmas had come early - getting away with not having to buy a parking ticket.

he Rotary Club of Alloa took part in the National Stroke Awareness Day, in cooperation with Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland. The blood pressure, of more than 130 people, was checked. More than 30 people were referred to their GP to have their blood pressure checked within a week and about the same number within a month. The Rotary Club hopes that this checkup could go some way in preventing illnesses caused by high blood pressure at an early stage. Everybody received information from CHSS including anti-smoking and dietary pamphlets. The club is very grateful to Morrison›s Supermarket, Alloa for allowing us to set this up in front of the store on Saturday 14th April.

It proved very successful and local nurses Liz Thomson, Marie Phin, assisted by Kirsty Thomson gave their time to do this for which we are also very grateful. Some people signed up immediately to the non-smoking clinic run by Marie Phin.

The club collected £550 on the day which will go to CHSS to support their work. President Graham Kerr would like to thank the residents of Clackmannanshire for their generosity and their continuing support for The Rotary Club of Alloa.

Speaking about the visit, candidate for Clackmannanshire South, Kenneth Earle said: ‘It was great to have Johann Lamont join us in Alloa for our 150th door knocking session. We have worked tireless over the last couple of months to meet and speak with as many residents as possible and to tell them of the work that Labour has done in Administration and the work we plan to keep on doing if we are elected on Thursday May 3rd.’ Dr Richard Simpson MSP for mid Scotland and Fife said: ‘I am pleased to be part of the team

to welcome our Scottish Labour leader to Clackmannanshire, especially on the 150th door knocking session. The team has worked hard to promote this area and it was great to tell Johann about three new secondary schools, the new College, the new Forth Valley Health Centre, the train line and the beautiful bridge all delivered by Scottish Labour, working in partnership to invest in and promote Clackmannanshire.’ Scottish Labour leader, Johann Lamont spoke about her visit to Clackmannanshire by saying: ‘It is great to be back in Clackmannanshire, the Scottish Labour party are fielding nine hard working, dedicated and honest candidates, with a wide range of experiences to offer residents of Clackmannanshire. Each candidate has my full endorsement; it is already clear what the Scottish Labour party has done for Clackmannanshire, and if elected again on May 3rd, they will continue to invest in this area, by fighting for local people, local jobs, local businesses, education and protecting families.”

Alloa bike shop owner retires after 30 years By Gary Smith

M

r John Glass of Glass and Steele would like to thank all customers past and present and wish them all the best for the future – he hopes to see his former customers about the town after his retirement After Robertson’s motorcycle and bicycle shop closed in 1972, Mr Glass began the business with Mr Steele. Their original premises were in Fishcross. After Mr Steele emigrated to Canada, Mr Glass bought the business from him. Sadly, after only a short time in Canada, Mr Steele died of Emphysema. Glass and Steele have been in their Mar Street premises for 20 years and Mr Glass, who is now 74, says the time feels right to “say goodbye”. Mr Glass is a keen writer and has had a book, The Mission of St. Mungo,

published. He has also written a book, about his time in the army – where he spent his 20 months National Service in Malaysia as a Signals Courier; and also where he met his wife. The working

title for the book is “Fate” Mr Glass is also a member of Alloa Writer’s club, so his time will still, no doubt, be filled; more with possible writing ideas than bike repairs hence forth.

The Annual General Meeting of the Rotary Club of Alloa was held last week. President Graham Kerr reported on a very successful year. One of his pleasant duties was to award the Andrew Nichol Quaich to the club member

he found to be the most outstanding member during his year as President. His choice of Rotarian Hector Nicolson was met with approval by all the Members. Hector has paid good service to the club throughout the year, but he will be specially

remembered for his organisation of the Concert in Devonside Hall, which raised the magnificent sum of £4.500 for Mary’s Meals. The photograph shows President Graham making the presentation to Hector.

Officers from the British Transport Police along with their colleagues from Strathclyde Police were in attendance after the incident, which occurred at approximately 11.20pm. The accident is currently being treated as nonsuspicious. Paramedics from the West of Scotland Ambulance Service attended but pronounced Mr Jackson dead at the scene.

Be part of better - that’s the message from Alex Salmond and your local SNP team SCOTLAND’S First Minister Alex Salmond lauded the track record of the SNP-led Administration at Clackmannanshire Council, at the official National launch of the SNP Manifesto on Friday. Speaking before a packed hall of SNP candidates and national press and media, Alex Salmond (pictured right with local SNP candidates, and MSP Keith Brown) referred to coverage in the national press that, since taking over Administration in the New Year, the SNP-led Council has been referred to and acknowledged as “a revelation”. The successful track record of the SNP-led Adminstration’s time at Clackmannanshire

Council formed the backdrop to the SNP revealing it’s manifesto pledges for the upcoming Council Election on May 3. Both locally and nationally the SNP have revealed an ambitious range of commitments to improve Clackmannanshire, local communities, and to improve prospects and life for all throughout the Wee County. As well as confirming that the Council Tax will be frozen yet again, the wide range of promises include:• Creating jobs locally by investing in new schools and homes; • Introducing Carer’s Champions to ensure better support for carers and to maintain and increase Kinship Carer budgets; • Committing to keep

to drive down crime and keep increased police numbers on the streets; • Guaranteeing to retain concessionary bus passes – and extending it to cover Dial-a-Bus services; • Continuing the Small Business Bonus Scheme, the best rates relief package in the whole UK, to boost the local economy; • Delivering an additional £1.5 million to allow the huge maintenance and repairs backlog on local roads to be addressed; • Correcting Labour’s failings – by keeping the public toilets in Alloa open, working to save Alva Pool Complex for the community, and investing in communities to alleviate Labour cuts to services and facilities.

SNP - Taking Clackmannanshire Forward

Speaking at the joint local and national manifesto launch, current Council Leader and Clackmannanshire Central candidate, Cllr. Gary Womersley said: “All of our manifesto commitments are realistically ambitious, costed and will be delivered by a determined SNP Adminstration should our historic goal of retaining control of the Council come to pass after 3rd May. “It really is heartening for myself and all the SNP candidates to hear the goodwill and recognition for all we have achieved since the New Year – and all that this manifesto would allow us to deliver for the area over the next four years with the support of local people.”

SCOTLAND 7s STAR RETURNS TO PRIMARY SCHOOL Former Alva Primary School pupil Adam Ashe makes a visit to talk to the kids

S

cotland 7s star Adam Ashe returned to his former primary school in Alva, Clackmannanshire last week to meet the pupils in person having been in touch from across the world while playing in the HSBC Sevens World Series.

The Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s is being held at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow on May 5 and 6 and Alva Primary School

will be taking a bus full of young rugby fans to cheer on Adam and the whole of the Scotland 7s squad.

18-year-old Adam has been sending postcards back to the school, keeping them up to date about his globetrotting rugby career, which has seen him play in all seven tournaments of the series so far including New Zealand, Las Vegas and Dubai.

 A native of Clackmannanshire,

the number 8 started playing rugby at Alva Academy going on to play for Stirling County. He is currently part of the Elite Development Programme with Glasgow Warriors.
As well as taking part in a special Q & A session with Primary 6 and 7 pupils, Adam also helped local Development Officer Steve Swindall with special coaching sessions for classes before going on to hold

another session at nearby Alva Academy.

Adam said: “We spend a lot of time on the road, travelling around the world but it’s been great to have that connection to back home.

“Alva is where I started to play rugby and it’s great to be back here, putting on some coaching sessions and giving a bit back to the school and the area.

“It’s amazing to hear that Alva Primary are making the trip for the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s, it’ll give me that bit extra motivation knowing they’ve come along to support us.”

Belinda Greer, Head of Education at Clackmannanshire Council, said: “We have been committed to rugby development for over a decade and are incredibly proud that elite players like Adam, who benefited

from the Clackmannanshire rugby programme, have gone on to play for their country.

“All Clackmannanshire’s primary school pupils get rugby as part of their PE lessons in P5 and in P7 and Alva Academy is the first secondary school in Clackmannanshire to host a School of Rugby. I’d like to thank Adam for visiting his former primary and secondary schools today.”

£3.5m wildlife rescue centre opens in Fishcross 35 acre site can care for 5,000 animals By Connor McQuillian

T

he Wee County News was invited along to the opening of Fishcross’ brand new SPCA centre yesterday (Monday), Scotland’s only national centre dedicated to sick, injured and orphaned animals. At a cost of £3.5 million, the wildlife rescue centre will encompass various ways of helping wild animals back to health after suffering trauma. Mr Colin Seddon, manager of the centre stated, “The demands we face are increasing dramatically, with the number of wildlife casualties we care for having risen 70% in the past

four years.” He also added, “There are currently no other centres in Scotland that have facilities to care for oiled birds and our new centre will enable us to deal with up to 1000 oiled bird casualties at any one time.” He also added “We cared for 3,917 wild animals in 2011, including 2,678 birds.” The centre can accommodate 5000 sick, injured or orphaned animals at one time. The SPCA have 62 acres of land at their Fishcross site but are currently using 35. The SPCA was founded in 1839 in Edinburgh. They dealt with 200,000 calls last year alone. The work

carried out by the centre will range from specializing in care for oiled birds to all wildlife species including garden birds, badgers, hedgehogs, red squirrels, seals, otters and foxes. The centre at Fishcross will include a vet surgery, sea pools, a wild mammal enclosure and much more. The centre will not be a sea-life centre type organisation, with public access limited to pre-arranged visits for educational and media purposes; as is evident by the secluded location. It is important that sick or traumatised animals are given space to recover. The staff feel that a building of this type in the region is well overdue and also that, while it is sad too say goodbye, one of the most rewarding aspects of their job is to return species to their natural habitats. In the last 5 years the SPCA have invested £10 million in rural projects and rehabilitation centres for wild animals and are looking to invest a further £9 million in the next 5 years. The investment was funded by private donations, the SPCA does not benefit from government grants or lottery funding. Rt Hon George Reid said, “The centre will cater for animal needs, animal welfare and animal rescue”. He also stated that the centre will deal with all wild animals with the exception of “dolphins and whales!”

SNP Leader Challenges Labour – Stop Deflecting “You Must Come Clean with the Electorate!”

A

fter a week which saw Labour attacking SNP locally on bus cuts and education, current Council Leader and Clackmannanshire Central ward SNP candidate, Cllr. Gary Womersley, challenged Labour to come clean with the local electorate. Challenging Labour to confirm what, if any, SNPintroduced initiatives Labour would or would not commit to, he stated:“Labour are all over the place. Some say they will commit to the SNP Council Tax freeze and others don’t. This is just one policy that has put money back into the public’s pockets but Labour have been eerily quiet on the subject? “The SNP have put more – quite literally millions, into schools, education, staff, key infrastructure all against the backdrop of reducing the record levels of debt presided over by the last Labour Administration, which saw levels

of debt at Clackmannanshire Council, the smallest mainland local authority in Scotland, at £180 million, the third highest in the whole country.” “Will Labour commit to keeping the public toilets in Alloa open?; to support Alva Pool Complex and its running by the local community? To keep the minimum living wage for staff; to adhere to the millions we’ve committed for schools and infrastructure upgrades; will they take away the additional money we invested in education and initiatives to improve attainment? These are just some of the questions the public should be entitled to answers before 3rd May.” “Labour appear to have had a manifesto launch, with a cover sheet and no content. What have they cost? What have they actually committed to in real terms. They have brought absolutely nothing positive or constructive to this election. At best there are vague platitudes that

don’t really mean anything in the real world and would certainly be hard to evidence.” “The SNP on the other hand have quite explicitly gone out of our way to say what and exactly how much we will invest. We commit to hard, tangible outcomes that the public can hold us to account against. We say we will maintain the SNP-introduced budgets for Kinship Carers and indeed that we will increase this year-on-year. We commit to delivering an extra £1.5 million to tackle a backlog of disinvestment in roads and further millions on improving a primary school estate neglected for too long by Labour.” “Labour seem to be living in a world where they were responsible for delivering a new college, a new hospital, a new railway, additional funding for Alloa Town Centre Enhancement and a new Clackmannanshire Bridge. These were delivered not by the Council but by Forth Valley College, Forth Valley Health

Board, an SNP Scottish Government.” “They’ve sought to criticise the SNP for putting more money into Education and schools, for rolling our Breakfast Clubs to every primary, investing millions into primary schools and making Educational Attainment a priority, with substance behind all of this such as the additional specialist staff in each of the three secondary. The criticism by Labour last week, seems to ignore that they cut Education budgets year-on-year when Councils were being awarded historic levels of funding. Why? Because they needed the money to plug their financial blackholes. Perhaps Labour don’t want to draw attention to the fact that it is they that presided on a decreasing trend of educational attainment yet did nothing.” “Labour are really scraping the bottom of the barrel by seeking to suggest that the Council has cut bus services. Perhaps Labour are

being purposefully disingenuous or just don’t know that it is not the Council that runs bus services – it is bus companies. Indeed it was these same companies who have made hundreds of millions in profit that withdrew the services. Indeed the Council has sought to limit the Gary Womersley, impact of such bus Leader of the Council company cuts but “Unlike Labour, the SNP is realigning routes it about “Can-Do” politics that subsidises to try and ensure make a difference to real the impact of such cuts is peoples lives. If Labour have mitigated. This is in addinothing of substance to put tion to the SNP committing up, they shout shut-up. The to keeping the concessionpublic deserve to know what ary bus travel scheme and a vote for them really means indeed extending it to Dial-aand if it will just see Labour bus services.” seeking to cut the policy “Perhaps we are seeing the same lack of policy initia- initiatives we have delivered on. I’m happy to take about tive that saw Labour run out what the SNP have and will of steam and shy away from deliver – shouldn’t Labour any ambition for Clackmando the same?” nanshire.

OLD FIRM LEGENDS GAME AT SAUCHIE JUNIORS

S

auchie Juniors Football ground will be holding a family orientated extravaganza on Sunday April 29th in association with the ‘Rid the Old firm Of Bigotry’ campaign.

when ‘The Goalie’ talks like that, he’s sure to please the crowd! Ex-Celt Frank McGarvey added, “I am also looking forward to the game and I’m especially looking forward to putting one past Andy!” A feat not many Celtic players

The winners will be given a place on the field and have the chance to play alongside the likes of Goram, McGarvey and Tommy Sheridan. There are also limited VIP places available from a price of £99. This will ensure you a place in the team of your choice. Remember that this is all for a very worthwhile charity. Legends are also running a mascot competition. Parents should provide their own name, the name of their child, a contact telephone number, which town they are from and what team their child would

By Gary Smith like to be a mascot for. All Mascot and competition entries should be texted, with the fore-mentioned info, to 079429765346. Please remember to leave your name, the team you support and a contact number. Ticket prices for the match will be £5 for the enclosure and £8 for the Stand. Concessions are available. Gates open at 2.30pm and the match will kick-off at 4pm; ensuring Old Firm fans will still be able to watch the day’s game at Parkhead before setting off for Sauchie Juniors football ground. All proceeds from the day’s celebration will go to Rid the Old Firm of Bigotry and football kits for Lesotho.

To win a an opportunity to play with these football legends from both teams, we have two questions… 1. Celtic fans are required to name the club Frank McGarvey scored the winning goal against in the 1985 Scottish Cup Final…

Old Firm Legends of the past, such as League and Scottish Cup Winner Andy Goram, Scottish Cup winner Frank McGarvey, scorers of Champions League wonder

goals against Club Bruge, Gary McSweggan and Scott Nisbet, Celtic hero John ‘Yogi’ Hughes and European Cup Winner’s Cup winner Dougie Bell (ex Aberdeen and Rangers) will be joined by guests such as Tommy Sheridan, ex Hearts man Jose Quitongo and Andy McLaren (ex Dundee United) at the event. Andy Goram stated” I am looking forward to coming to Sauchie for the game and also to experience a great family atmosphere!” Those who know football know that

managed during Goram’s glittering Rangers career. As well as the Legends match, there will be a ‘dance-off’ between official Legends dance group Dance Fusion and local dance group Dance Attack. Which will add to the gala like atmosphere throughout the day. At half time, members of three local boys clubs will be involved in a ‘beat the goalie’ penalty competition. On this occasion, however, the keeper in question is a man known throughout the football world as “The Goalie” - Andy Goram. Best of luck to those involved… As a special gesture of goodwill to Wee County News readers, Legends are running a competition.

2. Rangers fans, meanwhile, should name the club from which Andy Goram was signed... ____________________________________________________________________ Send your answers to: Wee County News Old Firm Competition, 38 Primrose Street, Alloa FK10 1JG or email weecounty@hubpublishing.co.uk, or via our facebook page. Closing date, 3pm Friday 27th April.

Alison to be sponsored by Alloa Rotary Club

A

lison Savage, a senior pupil at St Modan’s High School, was selected by Alloa Rotary Club to be sponsored to participate in the Euroscola programme. Alison was invited to Lunch and then give a presentation to the members. She spoke very confidently about her experiences and gave an interesting and entertaining address. She thanked the Club for giving her this opportunity, and it was obvious that she had benefited greatly from the visit. The photograph shows Alison accepting her Certificate from President Graham Kerr. Rotarian Michael Clark on the right was responsible for making arrangements for the visit. Euroscola days are hosted 12 times a year by the European Parliament in Brussels or Strasbourg. For 12 years we have been running a visit to Strasbourg in conjunction with Rotary and local authorities. This vis-

it gives participating students the opportunity to use their language skills and to work in collaboration with other young people from across the European Union. Over 500 young people from across the EU take part in a day of presentations, questions, discussions and voting on issues relevant to them. The day offers excellent opportunities to use language skills: the official language of the day are French and English, but other official languages are in use throughout the day. The day is led by officials of the Parliament and is structured to ensure all the young people participate to the full. It is a prestigious event with the students being treated like MEPs: sitting in the main debating chamber; using electronic voting, etc. Those who have some self-confidence and are willing to speak in public benefit greatly from the experience. Around 25 young people in

their final year at school are selected to represent the UK on an area basis at Euroscola events in Strasbourg or Brussels. They will have studied French at AS or Higher level(Scotland) and will have been selected to represent a local Rotary Club before moving on to regional selection. They will have further opportunities to use their French in Strasbourg through Industry, Institutions, Rotary

Clubs and through a range of specially designed activities which will help to build their linguistic skills. The programme is supported by the European Parliament. The cost will vary from region to region depending on travel costs. The nominating Club is expected to meet the cost for a successful nominee so that they only need pocket money.

Top rugby player joins council sports development team I

t has been announced that former Glasgow Warriors star, Stevie Swindall, is the new rugby development officer with Clackmannanshire Council. Stevie said: “I have been met with a terrific response from everyone in the area. It is my aim to improve the standard of rugby and encourage children at all 19 of our primary schools and three secondary schools to take up the game.” Stevie started his illustrious rugby career at Whitecraigs Rugby Club in Glasgow, where he played while still at school. After two years in the club’s first fifteen the 6’4” blindside flanker stepped up to a higher grade with Glasgow Hawks where he was part of two Scottish Premier Division One championship winning teams, as well as winning a Scottish National Cup winners medal. It was during this period that Stevie’s outstanding abilities saw him achieve international recognition, playing for Scotland under-18’s in 2000, before being capped for Scotland under-21’s in both the home nations and the under-21 World Cup in 2003. Stevie, moved into the professional ranks in 2004 and made his debut for Glasgow Warriors against Leeds Tykes and penned his first full time

News Brief Loan star May grateful for opportunity Loan hero Stevie May, who helped Alloa to the third division title, scoring 17 goals in the process, has expressed his gratitude to the club after enjoying the best campaign of his career thus far. The St Johnstone star, who was originally on loan until January 2012, and then had his time with The Wasps extended until the end of the season thanked both the club and Manager Paul Hartley; who he believes has a very bright managerial career ahead of him. MILL ST By Gary Smith

T

he majority of large towns have a High Street where local people can go and buy all the produce they require. However, due to Alloa’s maze like town centre, a variety of great shopping sites are spread throughout the town centre. This week The Wee County News shall be concentrating on Alloa’s Mill Street – home to a variety of stores that encompass Hairdressers, Art Galleries, Tanning studios and Mobile Phone Stores. Men Zone Barbers caters for gents of all shapes and hairstyles. The happy staff are very accommodating and love their jobs, ensuring, in turn, you walk out with the perfect haircut. The next shop walking west from the Shillinghill end of Mill Street is Coco Creative; who specialise in men’s and women’s

hairstyles and have a wide range of hair accessories on offer. Baxter’s Restaurant and Takeaway have been serving Alloa’s finest for decades. Although the emphasis is on cheap and cheerful food, the sit-down area is spotless and staff are always happy to accommodate your various culinary needs. Baxter’s also boasts a beautiful outside area where you can eat your lunch in the fresh Alloa air. One of Mill Street’s newer stores is Phone City. A well stocked shop which sells covers for phones, chargers, USB cables and spare batteries. Anything you require for your mobile phone, Phone City is sure to have. The shop also offers a Mobile phone repair service. Jewellers Gordon R McFarlane FBHI has been around the Mill street area for many years and display work by artists in the gallery upstairs in the shop. Very welcoming and always happy to be of

s Gallery is a well stocked gift and card shop which has a small gallery through the back. The store has the widest selection of the famous ‘Yankee Candles’ in the whole of Alloa and has a beautiful aroma throughout. Although it has only been open for 4 months, it appears to be doing very well and the manager stated that she is very, very happy with the progress. Urban Inc Tattoo Studio and Piercing will cater for all your body art requirements. With the body art market steadily growing, tattoo

and piercing stores have become very successful in past years and will continue to grow in the future. The store is very happy to welcome new customers and talk about estimates for the tattoo, or piercing, which may suit you. Looking to rent a home? Look no further than County Rentals, situated across from the entrance to the High Street, the office will help you choose the right house at an affordable price...without ripping you off! The office covers the whole of Clackmannanshire, so unless you’d like to move out of the ‘Heart of Scotland’, you could do a lot worse than checking out County Rentals! For those hungry tummies after closing time, and before for that matter, China Town Take Away is sure to fill a huge gap until the next morning when you have your bowl of porridge... Finally, Cabelo Art, Alloa’s finest secret, is situated upstairs, just after the bookmakers. Fiona and her selection of wonderful staff will welcome you in,

make you feel very much at home, talk about your hair beforehand and then proceed to give you a cut, or style and colour that will not only suit you but also last you. The beautiful Mollie Harrison will be in attendance at the front desk to deal with any and all enquiries. Watch out however, because, as we mentioned, Cabelo Art is one of those “blink and you’ll miss it” types of establishments; a great pity considering the quality on offer...Fiona is currently in the process of making the business more visible to passers by. Manager Fiona said, “We felt like we could add something that we felt was missing to the local community!” Mill Street, just like Alloa’s other big streets, has a fine selection of local shops that you may, or may not, have recognised before. Now there is no reason to ignore them...get out there, enjoy yourself and get a bargain – that’s what it’s all about after all!

I

was having a chat with one of our regulars before circuit class the other night. This person had seen our poster for circuit training at the start of the year and picked up the phone to ask for more details. I remember amongst her questions were ‘Will I be the most unfit person there’ and ‘will I be able to do the class’. Pretty common questions in our line of work. I quickly reassured her, that she would most definitely be able to do the class, as the only person you work against is yourself. You work at your own pace, as hard as a you can. Don’t worry about other folk. She has been a regular since that first session, and continues to be the first ‘Circuiteer’ to show up for that particular class. Now going back to the chat I was having with her the other night, she had mentioned a slimming group she attends, but I won’t tell you the name of the group. The group leader had suggested she give up her exercise as it would make her heavier, and turn fat into muscle. This statement just highlighted to me that some of the folk in charge of these groups are giving out ill-informed advice, which is not cool at all. This is my whole problem right here. For a kick off, fat cannot and will not turn to muscle or vice-versa, common myth I hear time and again but that is by the by. I think the group leader has totally missed the point here as have all of these types of groups. The point being that it is not all about the scales. It more to do with your body composition. Your body shape will totally change, by doing the correct kind of exercise, such as metabolic conditioning and resistance training as opposed to steady state cardio, which is hopeless for fat loss, and eating a proper diet. Yes, the scales may not change much for the reason that as you lose fat, this loss in ‘weight’ is offset by building a bit of lean tissue, and increasing your bone density, but visually you will look, not to mention feel, much better, with improved energy levels too. You will feel it in your clothes also. The outside world sees you, not the reading on the scales. To let you understand, muscle is smooth and very dense where as fat is bulky and doesn’t sit under the skin in a nice regimented shape. You know the ’toned’ look everyone wants. Nothing to do with building huge muscles, more to do with melting body fat in order to reveal the muscle. I feel that if you are going to lead a group of people in the quest for ‘weight’ loss then you have to know what you are talking about. Education is the way forward, read books, got to seminars, study your

Alternative treatments for arthritis

A

t best a nuisance and at worst a horribly debilitating condition, arthritis affects around one in five of the British population. But there remains no cure for arthritis and the most effective way to treat symptoms is different for everybody. Many turn to alternative medicine when their GP or specialist is unable to offer a useful solution, but with so many treatments out there claiming to improve life for those suffering with different types of arthritis, how can you decide which will best suit your condition and lifestyle? One of the most recommended courses of ‘treatment’, if it can be called such, for those with arthritis is yoga. Exercise can be very difficult for sufferers whose limited movement and joint pain rules out many more traditional forms of exercise, however the gentle stretches and bends of yoga can be excellent, slowly encouraging an increased range of movement in affected joints. Most yoga instructors will encourage moving at one’s own pace and classes are not competitive - an excellent atmosphere for those who feel limited by their condition. The mind/body balance which is essential in the practice of yoga brings about an increased sense of overall wellbeing which can be hugely beneficial to arthritis

sufferers. Research is limited but it has previously been shown that those who practice yoga at the very least find pain is reduced.Acupuncture, conversely, has been widely studied. And although the treatment does not change the course of arthritis it has been found to bring about a significant improvement in pain and the stress associated with living with arthritis. However, as with any treatment, acupuncture has varying results depending on the specific condition and person - for example, published studies have shown no improvement in pain or function for those suffering with osteoarthritis of the knee. Supplements are the most widely used of ‘alternative’ treatments for arthritis, however recent studies have thrown doubt over the usefulness of the likes of glucosamine and chondroitin. Yet glucosamine in particular has been previously proven to improve pain, stiffness and physical function while 1500mg of glucosamine sulphate regularly significantly slows the degenerative process. Again the results appear to depend on the type and position of the arthritis with knee pain most improved by taking a glucosaminechondroitin supplement in a recent major study. While the likes of magnets and copper bracelets have little or no research to back up their effectiveness, or indeed research

shows them to be useless to most arthritis sufferers, the real danger lies not in the sale of useless remedies but in those which could potential put users in danger. The use of bee venom for example has been advertised as a useful treatment, however it can of

course prove fatal for those unwittingly allergic to insect stings. Even glucosamine can be dangerous for those allergic to shellfish. Likewise herbal supplements and tinctures can interact dangerously with other medicines. It is important to make sure that whatever treatment or approach you choose to take that you consult with your GP and research thoroughly.

Replenish your skin with lost vitamins

W

ith people living longer and healthier lives, the demand for anti-ageing products has never been greater. A leading cosmetic surgeon, based in Cape Town, believes that skin needs daily replenishment of vitamins and antioxidants to fight the effect of photoageing, ageing which is caused by exposure to sunlight. Dr Des Fernandes claims that photoageing is skin disease caused by a vitamin deficiency. Exposure to sunlight destroys vitamins A, E and C and beta carotene in the skin. The treatment for photoageing, he says, is to supply skin with what has been lost though exposure to UV light.

“The skin ages because we lose essential lightsensitive vitamins every time we go out into sunlight,” says Dr Fernandes. “The scientific method to counteract this damage is to replace the lost vitamins every single day, preferably both morning and evening. “Vitamin A is the key molecule that maintains safe, healthy skin and it should be used by every single person on this planet in order to neutralise the accelerating damage from a thinner ozone layer.” Vitamin A is essential for healthy cells in the skin, but it is destroyed by exposure to UV light. If there is insufficient vitamin A in the skin then no matter what cosmetic you put on it, Dr Fernandes says, the skin’s

cells will not be healthy. Sunlight causes not only a lower concentration of vitamin A in the skin, but prolonged exposure can also lower the blood levels of vitamin A. Vitamin C and E are also destroyed by exposure to UV light. These two powerful antioxidants are crucial in protecting healthy skin cells. Vitamin C is also essential for the production of collagen and also for reducing pigmentation blemishes while vitamin E also helps preserve cell walls. ¨Topical vitamin A has long been used in antiageing cosmetics as it makes the skin thicker, reduces pigmentation and helps to smooth out the skin. However, Dr Fernandes recommends vitamin A

It’s vital you replenish your skin’s vitamin supply after a destructive spell in the sun. combined with antioxidants for the most effective results. ¨He believes that there are two significant rules to revolutionising skin care. Firstly, every skincare regime should have vitamins A, C, E and Beta carotene included at least once a day. Beta carotene is often

called vitamin A, but it is also a powerful antioxidant. Secondly, vitamin replenishment should start soon after exposure to sunlight. “In order to protect the skin each day, yet allow for the formation of natural vitamin D, a low SPF should be used

for simple ‘round the town’ sun exposure,” he says. The low SPF can be augmented, in effect, if the day cream has been fortified by the addition of natural vitamin A and antioxidants. These antioxidants will reduce the damage from UV light.”

Rising costs eat up lion’s share of pay packets

M

ost of us are all too familiar with the daily or weekly chore of keeping on top of our finances.Whether it is trying to balance our chequebook or monitoring

our online bank accounts, the economic downturn has seen a growing number of us watching the pennies on a increasingly regular basis. But new figures have revealed that despite

keeping a watchful eye on our balance, or deficit as the case may be, there is very little left over for life’s luxuries when payday rolls around. Research from consumer

PET of the week

credit information expert Equifax has discovered that more than a third of consumers have already accounted for up to 75% of their monthly wage - and one in five of us have nothing left a week before our next wage slip arrives. Escalating food costs, mortgage repayments and the price of fuel are the biggest financial fears in the survey of more than 600 consumers. The increasing cost of food is the biggest worry for over a quarter - 25.6% - closely followed by concerns about not being able to make the mortgage repayments - 24% - and the restrictive impact rising fuel costs have on car usage - 14.3%. More than half of customers who took part in the survey said they did not feel financially secure at the start of this year with the majority - 71.2% - blaming the rising cost of living for their worries, while 55.9% put their uneasiness down to not having any savings to fall back on. ”These figures probably won’t surprise many people as they continue to manage

on salaries that haven’t increased for a year or more, whilst food and fuel costs have risen significantly,” said Neil Munroe of Equifax. “But this emphasises how absolutely vital it is for consumers to have a complete insight into their financial commitments so that they can reduce the chances of getting caught out. ”Our latest data shows the scale of apprehension amongst consumers, undoubtedly for many prompted by the fact that they have had a pay freeze for the last year or have not yet had a pay rise this year. “It is more important than ever, therefore, that consumers ensure they set budgets and make sure they are keeping on top of their debt and meeting their credit repayments. The worst thing they can do is bury their heads in the sand, as any missed payments now could impact their ability to get new credit in the future.”I n the current climate, the key is to be as informed as possible in order to manage your finances effectively - and without incurring

unnecessary charges which will only drive you further into the red. The Equifax Credit Report give consumers access to credit information free for the first 30 days, providing a valuable insight into your credit status as well as expert advice and help to navigate life’s financial challenges. You can also get a free money makeover from The Money Advice Service which was set up by the government to help everyone manage their money better. The service, which is available online, over the phone and face to face, provides clear, unbiased financial advice to help people make informed choices. While it is funded by a levy on the financial services industry, it does not sell any products so you can be assured the advice is independent. So why not spend 10 minutes giving yourself a personal money health check and see if you can free up some of that payday cash? It could be the most profitable move you make this month.

The Porsche Panamera T

he closest most of us will get to the Porsche Panamera is the “Build your Porsche” feature on the website. Doing it this way saves over £60000 and gives you the feeling of being Q in James Bond. It’s close but no cigar. Actually buying the car means you can make full use of the Panamera’s scope for customisation , so you get just the car you want from a huge choice and you can tell everyone you have a Porsche. Performance The Panamera is a heavy car but you would not know it. It has an impressively short stopping distance and glides through gear shifts. The flow of power from the engine is transmitted through one side of the gearbox one clutch at a time while in the second half of the gearbox the

next gear is reselected meaning that no full gear shifts take place. Safety The Panamera has everything short of an ejector seat. Brake assist and tyre pressure monitoring systems are fitted as standard. The Panamera also sports an Active Pedestrian System which raises its bonnet in the case of collision. This reduces the risk of injury massively for those on foot while advanced airbag technology enhances safety for the driver and passengers. Airbags surround all seats and, in the case of less serious collisions, only partially deploy to reduce discomfort. Running Costs The Panamera quickly depreciates in value and is in the top two car tax bands depending on the model. This means that

on top of large fuel bills, as this is a very thirsty car, you will be paying £425 to £430 a year. This car also costs the environment with the lowest emissions in the series are from the 3.6 V6 model with PDK gearbox but even this costs £245 per annum in tax. Handling/Ride/Drive This Porsche is quiet in comparison to others but no so quiet that you forget it is a Porsche although the hole in your bank account would hardly let you forget. It has surprisingly responsive and light steering considering the weight and an extremely smooth engine. At five metres long, however, visibility is not good and depending on your skill, makes for difficult parking. Toys The Panamera has a distinctly family feel to

its extras. It offers rear seat entertainment with two display consoles, two multimedia players and two wireless infrared headphones. The touch screens can be connected to separate AV sources such as games consoles. There is a BOSE surround system which is cleverly worked with the BOSE patented Audio Pilot Noise Compensation Technology meaning that volume adapts to the noise outside of the car to ensure a continuous play. Climate control in the Panamera has zonal regulation so that temperature, airflow, volume, speed and direction of air flow can be different in the driver and front passenger seat positions. There is also a carbon filter fitted to trap particles, pollen and odours outside of the cabin.

The Porsche Panamera is the dream car. It is fast, well built and stylish. It is noticeable without being outlandish but it is expensive in the extreme even before you have filled the tank. That is why, for most of us, it will always be a dream and not a reality, or at best we may be able to afford a second hand one (someday). Rockies come out top with ex-pats

C

anada is the perfect place on the planet for UK expats, according to a new report which has found it offers the best quality of life for those heading for far away shores. The vast country scored

highly in the fifth Natwest index across all areas from culture, standard of living, sense of belonging, work/ life balance and equality of opportunity to the state of the economy and financial security.

Nearly nine in 10 (88%) of expats said that multiculturalism was a factor that made Canada a great place to live, with 90% rating Canada’s healthcare system as key and 96% saying the country’s human rights and

freedoms allowed them to feel safe. The NatWest International Personal Banking Quality of Life Index also reported that despite a global economic slump, more than two thirds of UK expats had not seen a reduction in their quality of life abroad. The study revealed that most expats believe they made the right decision to move abroad and more than half of them haven’t been forced to cut their spending significantly. The majority also felt that their financial situation had “improved dramatically” since moving , and fewer expressed a desire to return to England than those who had moved from France, Portugal and Spain. NatWest head of International Personal Banking, Dave Isley, says: “Our Quality of Life Index - which examines expats’ real life perceptions and experiences and gauges their personal assessments - shows the global financial crisis has failed to dampen the spirits of expats who

weecounty

seem to have adopted the ‘keep calm, carry on’ philosophy.”Expats living in China, the UAE, Hong Kong and Singapore also said their financial position had “improved dramatically” since moving to their respective chosen countries. But those living in Western Europe, South Africa and the United States were less enthusiastic about their financial prospects and reported their financial position to have “improved moderately”. The index also found that those Brits who escaped to the sun in Spain, France and Portugal are now counting the cost of their move as their income is eroded and the cost of living rises as a result of the euro zone crisis. Mr Isley adds: “When the first Quality of Life Index was carried out in 2007, confidence around the world was high as the global economy was expanding, household prosperity was increasing and global GDP forecasts were positive.”Fast forward five years and it’s a very different picture

however; it is the expats who are riding the storm with the majority planning to remain abroad.” This year’s index result is a hat-trick for Canada as it’s the third since the index began that the country renowned for its natural beauty, Mounties and maple syrup has topped the list. Canada also came top in The Well Being Index which covers state of health, degree of prosperity, sense of belonging and acceptance, life satisfaction, sense of achievement and overall level of happiness. China came last in the list of 12 countries ranked by the index. The complete list is: 1. Canada 2. New Zealand 3. Australia 4. France 5. South Africa 6. Portugal 7. Spain 8. United States of America 9. United Arab Emirates 10. Singapore 11. Hong Kong 12. China.

Scotland cricket Captain at Dollar Academy

S

cotland Cricket Captain Gordon Drummond visited Dollar Academy on Wednesday 18th April and spoke for over an hour to the current 1st and 2nd XI sides about playing 20-20 Cricket and the game in general. Gordon is currently a development officer for Cricket Scotland and has played in 25 One Day International and 20 T20

Internationals . A question and answer session allowed the pupils to ask him about a variety of different aspects of the game, ranging from individual player responsibilities to the mental focus necessary for success. Mr Jamie Frost, master in charge of Cricket at Dollar, commented, “There is no doubt that the boys who attended the session will

have been inspired by Gordon Drummond’s professional approach. He was able to provide a real insight into what it is like to play at the top level and the expectations that he, as a captain, makes on his players in specific game situations. It was a real privilege for us to host Gordon and we’d like to thank him for his time spent with us today.”

B League Results Week 29:Oakwood D 6 Crosskeys 3 Cairn B 1 Cairn A 8 County 5 Rileys 4 With only 4 games to go the Oakwood D have taken the initiative with a 2 point lead following Rileys defeat on wed with Cairn A and the County close behind with a few of the top teams still to play each other. League Cup 2012-Sponsored by Oakwood:- The last cup continued last week with the outstanding last 16 match resulting in a 5-2 win for Crosskeys over the Cairn B. On wed night the first quarterfinal took place in the sponsors venue with the Oakwood C using the home advantage well to beat their opponents from the A league Alva Golf Club by 5 frames to 2. This victory booked a semi-final slot against this years A league champions the Locker Room A after they convincingly defeated the Crosskeys from Alva 5-0 in the second quarter-final on Thurs night. The remaining two ties take place this week with the Locker Room B up against the Oakwood D on Tues with the Crown B versus Rileys taking place on Thurs again all in the Oakwood with the two semi’s and final taking place on the same night for the first time on Fri 11th May with a 7.30pm start. SPA IM2 Finals:- The second ranking tournament of the season took place last weekend with the venue being Hustlers Pool Hall in Rosyth with Clackmannanshire’s 5 representative’s all looking to make a mark on the national

weecounty scene. Not the best tournament for the Clacks boys with Alan Banks unfortunately away on holiday and Darren Mooney unable to attend due to a very tragic family bereavement. Pete Smith was looking to cement his current provisional ranking place of No.9 but had no complaints in losing his first round match 6-4 to Stevie Maxwell from Uddingston. Steven Smith, playing in his first national finals at the age of 17,also was taught a very harsh lesson from Ross Fernie from Midlothian beating Steven 6-0 with the young man only having 2 chances in the whole match. Certainly a learning curve for the youngster. It was left up to Billy Snaddon to fly the flag with Billy defeating current top 16 player John Brownlie 6 frames to 1 in his opening match and followed that up with an excellent 6-2 victory over Johnjo Kirkpatrick from Glasgow to see Billy into the last 32 on the Sunday. However this is where his run came to an end with a 6-4 defeat to Steven’s conqueror Ross Fernie, although some valuable ranking points were gained. Reminder to all players that the qualifying for IM 3 in Inverness takes place on Sunday 6th May in Rileys Stirling with the full draw available to view at clackspool.net SPA Grassroots Qualifier:Reminder to the 15 players that entered this tournament that the rescheduled qualifier takes place this Saturday 28th April again in Rileys with a 1pm start.

Point keeps promotion dreams alive Tayport Juniors 0 Sauchie Juniors 0

fter the off form performance of last Saturday, Sauchie Juniors turned in a much improved display against a strong Tayport side, which Sauchie can consider themselves very unlucky not to have left the Canniepairt with all three points. Having already met earlier in the season, which Sauchie won two one, Tayport were an impressive team that day, so the Sauchie players needed to be at their best. It was a match that one point would not be good enough for Tayport as this was their second last game of the season, whilst Sauchie still had seven games left. Manager, Fraser Duncan, made four changes of personnel to the team that lost to Broxburn, with Kenny Feaks, Chris Purdie, Steven Rennie and James Donaldson returning in place of Steven Dolan, Daniel Ashe, Darren Cummings and Brian Morgan. This was James Donaldson first start of this year after recovering from injury, sustained last November. The Tayport surface was in good condition and the weather conditions perfect for the match ahead. The pace of the match started as it continued, at a ferocious rate with both teams determined to win. Sauchie created the first chance after eight minutes when Rennie was able to lay on a header which Carroll met but shot wide. Tayport responded through a header from their experienced Paul Tosh who only managed to put his attempt wide after meeting a Gary Robertson cross.

The first controversial moment happened after fourteen minutes when a Carroll cross into the box hit Tayport’s Pete McAvoy on the right arm. It clearly looked like a penalty with the large vocal Sauchie support stunned when the referee waved play on. Sauchie continued to press with the strong running of Burns causing the central defence of Tayport some difficulties as they lacked a bit of pace. The three Sauchie Juniors strikers of Burns, Carroll and Donaldson linked to create a shooting chance for Donaldson whos attempt went out for a corner. From the resulting corner, John Tully met the ball to header over the bar. On the thirtieth minute, again Burns was involved as he held off Donnachie to turn and hit a low shot, which Ross was able to save, with Carroll reacting the fastest and hitting the rebound which Ross was able to block before being cleared. Burns was again involved in Sauchie next attempt when he played a clever ball across the pitch to Bonar, who ran onto the ball, beating one defender before releasing a low shot, which Ross had to be alert to deal with. A minute later, King received the ball from Halliwell and picked out Gary Carroll with his pass. Carroll in turn placed the ball to Ally Burns who hit the ball high across the Tayport goals. Tayport also had their share of pocession but were poor in the last third with most attacks being mopped up by the defence of Rennie, King, Tully and Feaks, a regular feature of this season.

A McDonald free kick was easily cleared by the Sauchie defence. At the end of the first half, Burns again broke free of the Tayport defence and was pulled back by McAvoy, who escaped with only a yellow card, even though it appeared that he was the last man. Another major decision that the Sauchie Supporters felt that the referee got wrong. At the half time whistle, the Sauchie players could be very pleased with their performances, although their contributions lacked a goal. The second half was much like the first, with the pace relentless. The first attack came from Sauchie, with Ally Burns running down the left side before cutting the ball back, which Tayport were able to clear from danger. Bonnar helped out in the Sauchie defence by taking the ball off the attacking Milligan and passing to Halliwell to clear. After sixty minutes, Tayport won a free kick on the edge of the Sauchie box. A tussle between Tayport’s Morris and Sauchie’s Feaks resulted in both players receiving yellow cards. The resulting free kick from McDonald was poorly hit into the Sauchie wall and cleared. Tayport tended to play down the right wing with the balls going to Murray who’s crosses where mopped up by King and Tully in the centre of the defence. A feature of Tayport’s attacks relied heavily on long kick outs from Ross. With ten minutes left Sauchie forced three corners in a row. Their best attempt was a great header from Sauchie’s new signing Dougie Wilson,

who had earlier replaced Alan Comrie. Dougie met a great Purdie corner, only for Ross to produce a terrific save to deny Sauchie once again. Sauchie ended the match with a strong flourish. Bonar came close after some strong running with his shot blocked. Again Bonar was involved in the next Sauchie move when he passed a great ball to Cummings who was one on one with the goalkeeper. The far side linesman flagged for offside, which was never the case, as Cummings played the offside trap very well, but this just summed up Sauchie’s luck with the refereeing decisions. The match ended with Sauchie again on the attack. It was an overall satisfying performance from Sauchie Juniors who were the better team over the piece. Halliwell in the Sauchie goals never had one save to make, with his defence able to mop up every Tayport attack. The major disappointment for players, management and supporterswas the inability to turn their pressure and attempts into goals. It was only due to the form of the Tayport Scottish junior International goalkeeper, Iain Ross and some very poor refereeing decisions that Sauchie were were unable to travel home with all three points. In terms of promotion, it was Sauchie who demonstrated more hunger and desire to win. This week Sauchie Juniors continue their travels, as they meet Downfield in another league match with a 2.30 kick off, in their pursuit of their promotion challenge.

S

aturday’s clash with Tayport was always going to be one of our toughest journeys of the season, however the score suggests this but not the way of the game. We had to recover from a very poor display against Broxburn last week and where better to do it than a top of the table clash with promotion chasing Tayport. It was a game that Tayport needed to win in order to stay in the hunt however it was ourselves who looked the more likely throughout the game. We started the game well and caused the home side problems and it was good to see us knock the ball about the way we can, on what I must say was a very impressive surface. We had a very big call for a penalty in the first ten minutes when Gary Carroll delivered a cross only for the defender to control with his arm however referee saw it different. We had a few other chances and we really should have been in front at the break. Second half really went the same way with Chris Purdie controlling the Sauchie midfield and Ally Burns and Adam Bonar really pushing the Tayport defence, with their pace, it was looking good for us getting on the scoresheet. Our defence was solid and never looked like conceding but with chances missed and some shall we say strange refereeing decisions it was a point a piece. Some good points from the game was the debut of Dougie Wilson who signed for the club and has battled his way back from a bad injury during his spell at Alloa. He came on with 25 mins to go and did very

well. I was glad to see Steven Rennie and James Donaldson return to action and now hopefully we have cleared our injury problems up, we can focus on getting the required points we need to get promotion. Promotion is the priority then we really need to push to try win the league. The league table looks good for us at the moment and now with our draw at Tayport on Saturday they are out of the running and we need to secure points to let us climb into pole position starting with a very difficult away game at Downfield on Saturday. Thank you to our travelling support once again and the lads will hopefully repay your loyal support sometime soon.

“I am delighted – our performance was great today the players were tremendous and some of the football was fantastic today. “We scored three goals and could have scored more. Ryan McCord’s two goals were outstanding and Robbie Winters showed his experience again. “I know what I get from my players - last week was most unlike us. We had made so many changes but I did expect a lot better last week. “We are still hungry even though we have won the league we still want to win every game. I still want to finish the season on a high and we still have a lot to play for and get as many points and goals as we can. “The team have come on leaps and bounds throughout the season -

We will try and make everything better but it will be a real challenge for us next year. “There is no doubt about it – it will be much tougher and we will need to work hard and get things in place.”

lloa went into the game looking to bounce back after last weeks thumping by Berwick Rangers, and manager Paul Hartley brought back several players absent from that defeat, fielding a strong starting 11 looking for his fourth straight win over Stranraer. The players didn’t let him down, as they rose to the occasion, notching up their twenty-third win of the season. The home side went ahead early on, when in the 13th min Robbie

Winters set up Ryan McCord and from the edge of the box slammed the ball past Mitchell into the corner of the net. But the hard working midfielder became villain when in the 27th min he lost the ball in midfield and Grant Gallacher cut in from the right to place the ball past Scott Bain, drawing his side level. However, the Wasps were back in front within 10 mins after a stream of constant pressure. Steve May set up veteran striker Robbie Winters who meandered

his way down the left wing, cutting inside to create a neat opening and from 10 yards out, shot the Wasps back into the lead. The Wasps had even more pressure on the Stranraer back guard and only good goalkeeping by the visiting number 1 kept the scoreline the same. Into the second period and an unchanged Alloa side dominated from the kick off. Despite the pressure and pretty much controlling the midfield, the Wasps could not break down the

Stranraer defence, and again some fine saves kept the gap at just one The points were made safe when man of the match McCord scored the goal of the game. A sweeping move between Young and May found McCord 22 yards out and he smashed a curling shot high into the net on the 69th minute – putting some daylight between the sides. Alloa nearly added to their tally, but again a great save from Mitchell kept the wasps out as Steve May’s net bound shot was well tipped over.
