assault allegedly came from Mr Walker’s wife, but nothing is clear right now. Despite these claims, Mr Walker has promised to carry on serving his constituents while endeavouring to prove his innocence in all charges made against him. Rumours are circulating that Mr Walker is being asked to step down from his £60,000 per annum position due to increasing pressure over his charges. On the contrary of this claim, out of the last 64 votes in the Scottish parliament he has only voted a grand total of 5 times since becoming a MSP even though he has been employed since May to do so. Dr Richard Simpson, MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife said: “I am amazed that Bill Walker is continuing in the job, even before these charges were brought against him, he had only voted in 5 times in the last 64 votes in

Parliament, it is clear he is not being the voice of the constituents that was elected to be. Bill Walker is isolated in Parliament, the time to go is well over, he is bringing the role of an MSP in to disrepute and this is totally wrong.” The MSP has been expelled since April from the SNP; a decision that he is currently appealing. The optimistic and confident attitude Mr Walker has shown to the accusations are evident, as he says “I look forward to facing my accusers in court”. It is also believed that the MSP has put his impressive £350,000 Alloa property up for sale following the charges. Clackmannanshire MP Gordon Banks commented: “These allegations are extremely serious. Domestic abuse is a very serious crime. If Mr Walker admits these charges, I believe he has no option but to resign, however even if he intends to fight the charges perhaps should step down to do

that.” Mr Walker refused to comment, whilst news has emerged that some of his peers are backing him after it was alleged that party

leader Alex Salmond told him he was not welcome on the SNP benches back in April. It is believed that he will appear in Dunfermline Sheriff court in July.

Between 3rd and 4th June a number of cast iron drain covers have been removed and stolen from Abercrombie Place and Main Street, Tullibody. Police have advised that these have undoubtedly been stolen to sell for scrap metal value. The covers are expensive and will be replaced at public expense. Due to the weight involved it is likely that a vehicle was used.

osh Gavin a former judo World Title holder now a judo instructor from Alloa will be running the Olympic torch on part of its journey through Cumbernauld at 11:30am. Josh, 46 really is a judo legend; he is a 6th Dan and has won the Scottish Title 10 times, The British Title, The Commonwealth Title and even the Title of World Masters Champion. But as Josh himself said when we interviewed him: “It isn’t only about winning it’s about having a good story.” Josh’s story hit a surprise twist 2 years ago when he was on the mat and started to feel a bit dizzy, he fainted and took a bad seizure. Luckily he was not alone and the emergency services were quickly called. With amazing luck a paramedic was passing by and came in to see to him because by this point he was seizing severely and had swallowed his tongue. After being rushed to hospital the doctors realised that Josh had a brain tumour, he then underwent a lengthy 9 hour operation to fix the immediate problem and remove the majority of the tumour. He could not fight or train any more but this tragic event has done nothing to affect Josh’s passion for Judo. He has pushed through and taken to teaching Judo to both juniors and seniors in his dojo in Alloa. Josh said he was really honoured to be chosen to run with the Olympic torch,

odern Apprenticeships Con - I was disappointed to learn that figures obtained from Skills Development Scotland show that over 10,000 publicly-funded apprenticeships that were designed to help the unemployed have been given to people already in work. Among the 26,000 Modern Apprenticeships started last year, 61 per cent had been in post for up to six months, with the remainder – 39 per cent – in work for longer than six months. Among 16-19-year-olds, the figure for those in work for less than six months was 81 per cent – with 19 per cent having been in their job for longer than that. To re-badge jobs as apprenticeships may make the figures look more convincing but it does nothing to help those who are facing the reality of a future on the dole. Youth unemployment has risen to over a hundred thousand in Scotland – these young people deserve better – they deserve a real chance. HMRC Waiting Times Recent reports that waiting times for HMRC helplines are almost trebling is yet more evidence of the chaos that reigns in this troubled organisation. It’s also indicative of just how out-of-touch this Coalition Government is as more and more people are hit by

benefit cuts and changes and having to queue longer to speak to an adviser after often struggling to get through in the first place. These delays are costly and unacceptable for those waiting on the end of the phone, for families, pensioners and businesses, and things are set to get even worse as the economic outlook continues to look bleak. The cabinet of millionaires that are running the country need to get a grip urgently because everyone is running out of patience. Olympic Torch We will witness an historic event this week as the Olympic Torch reaches Alloa after travelling thousands of miles. I’m sure that this has been great for Scottish tourism and it will be a great day for Clackmannanshire – I’m sure it will be one of those events that people like to look back and talk about for years to come. Hopefully we will see Team GB doing a great job and our Scottish athletes doing us proud and bringing home some gold medals. The Olympics are always an exciting occasion but this is an extra special once-in-alifetime event for everyone in the UK. Enjoy! o celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee a series of beacons were lit along the length and breadth of the country and Tillicoultry was proud to be one of the communities participating. Unlike its Hillfoots neighbours Tillicoultry’s beacon location could only be accessed on foot and it required a great deal of hard work and sore thighs to transport the wood up the face of the hill. With the help of the local scout troop and numerous volunteers the majority of the timber was taken from the foot of the Glen up to the beacon site on Friday evening and stored awaiting the grand event. On a fine Monday evening a party of over 30 people including the Lord Lieutenant’s deputy, Neil McFarlane, members of Tillicoultry, Coalsnaughton and Devonside Community Council (TCDCC) and the scouts gathered on the slopes of the Wester Kirk hill to light the beacon. At exactly 10.15 pm, with a bit of trepidation, 10 year old

Scouts Finlay Wilson and Jamie Downes lit the assembled pile of wood to a round of applause from the onlookers. A flood of congratulatory texts and messages flooded in to the party’s mobiles from appreciative viewers in the town below. After around an hour all that remained of the back breaking efforts to build the bonfire was a large pile of fiercely glowing embers. Once they had safely extinguished the remains, the group made their way down the hill (by torchlight) for some well-earned refreshments at the Woolpack Inn. Neil McFarlane said: ‘ without the effort of the Scouts, their leaders and everyone else involved the beacon would not have been possible, I would like to thank everyone for the huge effort they put in to making the beacon the success it was.’ A TCDCC spokesperson

commented “this was a really worthwhile community event and everybody enjoyed the culmination of their endeavours. The participants really put a power of work in and we hope the local residents appreciated the spectacle. As well as

Jubilee Street Parties in Clackmannanshire

esidents in Clackmannanshire were in party mode recently as Jubilee street parties were held across the county. There were Jubilee celebrations at both Mar Place outside Sauchie Hall and Holly Grove in Menstrie. In Sauchie the road along Mar Place was closed off, the street had been redecorated in a British theme with the patriotic colours of red, white and blue balloons and Union Jack’s flying. Replacing the usual cars were stalls and two bouncy castles, there were even fun fair attractions provided by Michael Stirling in the car park, that included spinning cups and a merry-

There were various outdoor stalls for: Baked goods; toys; a guide dog charity; clothing and trinkets; British themed goods; knitted goods; face painting and a raffle. More entertainment was provided by both the Alloa Bowmar Pipe Band who played brilliantly for the event and the ‘Sauchie Active 8’ dancers who put on a modern dance show every 10 minutes. Indoors hot food was served and seating

provided for those who were tired or just wished to get out of the heat. A special guest at the event was Councillor Derek Stewart who said: “The event will get much busier as the day goes on, lots of effort has been put in by the community, especially by the Active 8. “It is a special occasion not just for the royalists but for everyone, especially the kids. I hope it goes really well and that the stalls make lots of money for the local economy.” Meanwhile, over in Menstrie the Street Party had a more residential feel but no less celebratory; there were balloons and flags strung up all over the street and a bouncy castle for the kids and ‘big’ kids. The event was 50’s themed with music from the era and a few people even dressed in 50’s style clothing. There was a table heaped with food including hot food, cakes, fruit, crisps, sandwiches and cold drinks. The centre of attention was a shaded long table down the middle of the street around which neighbours, friends and family gathered to celebrate the Jubilee.

illicoultry Community Action Group expressed their delight that work is finally starting on the refurbishment of the former Hillfoots Family Centre. Speaking as a founder member of the Action Group Councillor Archie Drummond said:“When work starts here we will begin to see the fruits of a long fight by our community to get back the services and facilities that were stripped from us in March last year. It is only happening because

we refused to accept unfair treatment from the council. This is what a united community can achieve. I am pleased that we also have a local contractor engaged to carry out the works. This is an added bonus for local employment and the local economy and it is fitting that people who live in the community are constructing the accommodation for the community. Hopefully the mistakes that we have now overturned are in the past and we can

look forward to the opening of a better facility and the full return of improved services. As a community we should also be thinking about how we can make the most of this facility and how we want to see it grow and develop. We have the prospect of a lively centre for all of the people in the town and we need to get in there to make sure we get the most out of this investment. is a reflection of the great work done by the staff at WISH, ACTIVE8 and of course the local volunteers. “The response from the community has been fantastic with over 70 families being supported each week.

“The Round Table are fully committed to the success of this project and with additional support from the supermarkets, Clackmannanshire Council and other donations, we have the potential to kick start other

drop-in centres across the wee county.” Carol Robertson from Women in Sport and Health was also there to lend a helping hand and explain to families how the initiative works.

Tilli Hub contract goes to Marshall Construction

lackmannanshire Council has officially given the £315,000 contract to build the new Tillicoultry Hub to Marshall Construction who were scheduled to begin work on June 11th this year. Marshall Construction is based in Alloa which ensures that this new contract means more local jobs and improvement to the local economy. Local people will be constructing the facilities and services that will benefit their community. Council Leader, Gary Womersley has said: “I am delighted to announce the contractor is expected to start on site from 11th June. The works are expected to take 20 weeks, with a scheduled completion date of 29th October. It is anticipated a launch and opening date will take place on 5th November. “This gives the Council the opportunity to both

restore and develop an outstanding and extremely important facility at the heart of our community.” The work required involves refurbishing the old Family Centre and the addition of new areas which will need to be constructed in and around the old building. Last year’s public consultation has ensured a variety of features including: An IT learning suite, a library, a community access point, information and services point and a youth space. There will also be a multi functional meeting and community space, a meeting space for the toddlers group, a young mums group and baby group/baby massage. Marshall Construction has also been given a further 85,000 contract by the council for the refurbishment of local sports facilities, a project they will be carried out in partnership with the Council’s Criminal Justice

Service. These contracts are won via a competitive tendering process and follow the recent awarding of a £7.5 million given to Marshall Construction to refurbish Kilncraigs earlier in the year. Councillor Womersley added: “Clackmannanshire Council have appointed an experienced contractor to carry out upgrading and decoration work to various buildings throughout Clackmannanshire. “Funding for this project has been received through the Payback Sports Facilities Fund and a condition of this funding is that offenders on Community Payback Orders are utilised as part of the workforce. This will be carried out by Clackmannanshire Council Criminal Justice Service. “These significant projects represent a huge investment in the local economy and appointing a local building contractor will generate multi-million

ark Primary School in Alloa are gearing up for a summer of sport by holding an Olympics Sports Day on Tuesday, 19th June. As well as an Olympic themed event they will also be holding a Summer Fayre, organised in conjunction with the school’s parent council. Head Teacher, Adrienne Aitken said: “As well as coming to enjoy the sports, friends and family of Park Primary are invited to browse round our Summer Fayre.”

There will be lots of stalls and entertainments including plant stalls; stationery and book stalls; clothing stalls; second hand toys; home baking; raffles and tombolas. Children young and old will be able to take their chance at beating the goalie or to pelt the ‘prisoner’ in the stocks with wet sponges. Hi-Tech Command Unit Launched C

entral Scotland Fire & Rescue Service has launched its newly refurbished Command Unit – the Service’s most technologically advanced vehicles. The vehicle, based at Bo’ness Station, will enhance the Service’s command and control capabilities at the scene of major incidents through the use of the very latest technology. It also has full mapping capability at street view

level through mobile data terminals. Chief Fire Officer Kenneth Taylor said: “This is a major step forward for the Service. “The new Command Unit now contains the very latest in communications technology which will be of significant value to our officers and firefighters not only on the fire ground but also at remote locations as well as to other emergency services. “We now have a solid

building block on which to continue to add to this technology as it develops. It is a state-of-the-art piece of equipment which will be a huge asset not only to our Service but the new Scottish Fire and Rescue Service when it comes into being.” Scarborough based company Scott Medical carried out the conversion of the unit. The IT systems were installed by CSFRS and will allow the Service to: - Use specialist software systems for strategic and tactical planning and management of major incidents. - Connect to its main network from the Command Unit via satellite link. - Connect to Freesat TV to access rolling news

programmes. - Record decisions made inside the Command Unit and provide remote live access for senior officers. - Carry out briefings to crews outside the Command Unit through the use of an external monitor. - Use full mapping capability at street view level through mobile data terminals. local legend has been revived by Forth Valley College learner Steven Ingram following a competition to design a mascot for Beatson Building Supplies Limited’s two divisions - Beatsons Building Supplies and Skyline Roofing Supplies. Steven (31) from Linlithgow, who is currently studying for an HND Visual Communication, put a modern spin on old favourite Bobby Beatson and also created new friend Suzy Skyline. The new characters will be the faces of the organisations as they move forward and will help them to develop their profiles particularly on social networking sites. Steven will play a crucial role in the development of the characters and will work on this over the summer as part of a two month’s paid placement – his prize for winning the competition. Steven said: “I was delighted to win the competition as the placement will offer me great work experience. By working on real graphic design projects, I’ll be able to develop a wide range of skills and learn how to adapt my skills to any type of job. I’ve always enjoyed

Rotary hillwalking raises ÂŁ8000 F

or over thirty years the Rotary Club of Alloa has organised a Hill Walk from Alva Glen Car Park to the top of Ben Cleuch and back, climbing some 2400 feet up and 6 miles long. This year 210 walkers took advantage of these arrangements to support their club, local cause or charity by sponsorship, which has amounted to some ÂŁ8000. Carers receive fundraiser boost

or the second year running, a Fire Engine Limo is set to be the star attraction at Archie and Haldis Scott’s popular Garden Open Day and Summer Fete, and once again Clacks Kinship Carers will receive all proceeds from the £1-ahead trips on the engine which has been generously donated by Red Hot Knights of Perthshire. A kinship carer is someone who looks after a child with whom they have a connection when their birth parents are unable to take care of them. This can be attributed to a variety of reasons – inability to cope, drugs or death. These are often family members such as grandparents, aunts and uncles but can also be family friends. The group offers information and support to kinship

carers and also actively campaigns at local and national levels to try to ensure that the issues that affect carers and the children they look after are addressed in the most effective way. The Open Day takes place at East Lodge, Alloa on Sunday 24th June from 1-4pm. The event has various stalls including sale of plants and jewellery, and is usually very busy with locals attending and also many others from outside the area. The first of a series of coffee mornings throughout Clackmannanshire, the aim is to help older people to remain independent longer and the events are intended to offer older people and carers alike the opportunity to both socialise and find out about the services that are available on offer in Clackmannanshire. Many local organisations were represented and the first event was well-attended. It was also Volunteer Week and two VIP Volunteers, Councillor Irene Hamilton and Provost Tina Murphy were on hand to help with the coffees. Councillor Kathleen Martin, who was unable to attend because of a council commitment, sent her best wishes for the success of the local project. Community Development Worker and organiser Lillian Watson said; “It was good to see people engage with local organisations and also be able to meet with others - and enjoy refreshments, thanks to the ladies at Clackmannan Town Hall. I am confident that residents will find the coffee mornings that are taking place in other areas of Clackmannanshire informative and enjoyable. It is so important that older people and their relatives and carers are aware of the services that are available to them in their area. Schools:- Alloa Academy Notes Week Inter-House competition The winner of this session’s Inter-House Trophy is Erskine House. It was an extremely close competition with only a few points between the three Houses at the end. The trophy was presented by Belinda Greer, Head of Education Shared Service at the Junior Awards Ceremony on Thursday evening. The new InterHouse competition kicks off next week. Junior Awards Ceremony Many thanks to all parents and friends of the school for attending our Junior Awards Ceremony on Thursday 7th June. Gold, silver and bronze personal commitment awards were made to those who have achieved the required levels of attendance, punctuality and co-operation. Academic awards were made in each subject are to the pupil achieving the highest standard of academic excellence and each subject area also nominated two pupils in the categories of endeavour and citizenship.

Lornshill Pupil in competition for top Ski Scholarship

Lornshill Academy student from Sauchie is in the running for a skiing scholarship which will qualify him to become a Ski Instructor by the time he’s only 18. This year Interski has picked Calum McEwan to be among only thirty skiers from 10,000 in the whole of the UK who will compete for one of the 10 skiing scholarships available, each of which are worth £6000. Calum is a member of Fir Park Ski Club and was put forward by Clackmannanshire Council community worker and his instructor Iain Findlater. The Ski Club travels often, making regular trips to the indoor snow dome in Glasgow and always tries to book one trip a year abroad via Interski a

While he was on one of these trips abroad in Pila Italy an Interski instructor who was scouting for performance, personality and adaptability on the slopes spotted him and noticed his talent. Calum has said: “After our week’s skiing in the resort, our instructor put me forward for the Interski Scholarship. “Alongside two other hopefuls, several runs of our skiing were filmed and in May, at the end of the season, these videos were then judged, with only 27 going forward from the 300 to an intensive day’s training in Manchester during July. “I will be up against 29 of the best young skiers from around the country, where we will spend the day with some of the most qualified ski instructors in the world will be put through our paces as we ski for this

once in a lifetime opportunity.” The qualifiers will be held at the Chill Factore in Manchester at which all of the participants will be filmed so that the footage collected there can be analysed later. Calum added: “I will then have to wait nervously for several days for the letter and for news of whether I was successful or not. Continuing: “ I was chosen as one of the 30 best to go to Manchester, this is a chance I will never get again and I intend to grasp it with both hands.” The oldest of 3 brothers Calum took up skiing 5 years ago while he was still a pupil at Craigbank Primary School. Recalling he said: “I’ve never been a racer or entered competitions, but enjoy teaching and helping others. So if I achieve this scholarship I will

be able to get a job on the slopes and get paid for what is essentially a hobby.” He has always had an athletic personality, he trains 2 hours a week every Monday and rapidly moved up the ranks at the Ski Club soon attaining a level 7, and he has already been involved in swimming coaching. Calum also said: “At present in skiing, the most I am permitted to do is shadow instructors until I can instruct by myself and achieve my British Associate of Snowsports Instructors (BASI Level 1) certificate.” He already has his sights firmly set on the future; aiming to achieve a BASI level 2 upon reaching his 18th birthday. Regarding this he said: “That would allow me to teach anywhere in the world, a great opportuni-

he Celebration for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee took place in Alloa on Saturday June 9th in Greenfield Park.

The event was officially opened by the Lord Lieutenant Rt. Hon George Reid at 12pm, after which the fun begins and the stalls will open for business. Miss Alloa and Miss Princess, Nicki MacGregor, 17, from Menstrie and Georgia Smyth, 11, from Clackmannan, were awarded were awarded a tiara and a sash reading ‘Miss Alloa’ and ‘Miss Princess’ by Lord Lieutenant Rt. Hon George Reid and Miss Alloa 2011 just half an hour after the event opened; all three of the Miss Princess finalists have been approached by modelling agencies following their work in the competition. The events saw over a £120 raised for CHAS, which will be presented to CHAS on behalf of the Community Council by Miss Alloa and the princess. Police were also busy coding the children’s

Olly Murs TITP With T in the park coming up this summer, I am choosing a singer/ band to talk about each week to let you know the sights of them at the moment I have chosen Olly Murs this week because he will be performing on Friday 6th July. Olly Murs was born and raised in England and the Essex singer catches an attraction to all ages because of his good looks but mainly to teenagers and young adults. Just in case you did not know, Olly shot to fame after becoming runner up on reality TV show, X Factor back in 2009. I’ll let you know what Olly Murs top five songs are. “Heart skips a beat” The famous Rizzle Kicks feature throughout the song, the lyrics are moving they mean his heart skips a beat when his true love is around him. This song is great with the two singers performing well together. “Dance with me tonight” is a great this song and is about how he is in love with this girl and wants to get her up to dance with him. The song will catch your attention right away with the beat and the lyrics will never get old. “Oh my goodness” is really good and could mean something to people who are going through a rough path in your love life, and in my opinion, this is another song that will never get old. “Please don’t let me go” is a song that most people could relate to through the lyrics, means you sometimes want to let go and run away from your problems but you overcome it all great song. “Thinking of me” is about an old relationship which he is saying that he thinks about it all the time and he hopes that the girl will always be thinking of it as well. Olly Murs is the type of artist that most people will probably listen to because his songs are love songs, which all age groups can relate to if they are going through a rough patch in their relationship or weather they have found their true love and want to show them. His song “Heart skips a beat” is my personal favourite song because I love the lyrics and I believe that this song will never grow old. My favourite part of the song is when Rizzle Kicks starts singing because I like both artists so I think it is good when you have two artists you really like singing in the same song. I would say to anyone who is reading this who is going to T in the park this year you must go see Olly Murs or you will regret after words.

Wallace Monument.

With the summer coming up in a months’ time everyone will want something to do to make time go by faster when you have nothing else to do. The Wallace Monument is a great place to go visit you can learn so much within such a little time. Wallace’s Monument is the one of the high points of your visit to Stirling while at the top of the monument you can overlook the city centre of Stirling and the Forth Valley. The monument, outside Stirling city centre offers views of Scotland’s victory at the battle of Stirling. This is the very place if you would like to know about the history of Sir William Wallace and touch things that the man himself has touched and used. For years this world famous landmark has attracted visitors from all over the world with its exhibits and displays and very beautiful views. The opening times to Wallace Monument are 10.00am till 5.00pm and if you want the last chance before the ending time it Is 45 minutes before closing time is the last chance you will have to go view this great place and learn loads, if you think this is the thing you would like to do during your summer holidays then take a trip to Stirling and have a good day out have fun!

Last week I talked about two different exercises this week I think something simple again will be good and it will help a lot. So this week I thought we could do some simple static holds, static holds will help get your upper body and arm strength stronger. To do this exercise you can do it on any floor in your house maybe try having something soft under your arms to they don’t hurt as much while doing it. When you are ready put your body in to the push up position but place your elbows on the floor instead of your hands, if this is your first time doing this you should hold the position for around 45 seconds then put yourself down to the ground take a twenty second beak and try again. If you feel you can go on try doing it in stages for 5 minutes but remember on your first time after every 45 seconds I would take a twenty second break just to get used to the feel of the exercise at first, I think we will go for another exercise move to go with this one with it being a lot more simple this week. You should do some leg lifts as well as doing the static holds, place a mat or something soft on the floor and lie down flat then put your legs straight out with your hands at your side then lift your legs up without bending your knees hold that for about 45 seconds as well then lower your legs back down to the ground take a twenty second break then start again I would hold this about 5 minutes but remember to take your breaks every 45 seconds of holding the position for twenty seconds. Have fun doing all these exercises might hate it now but wait till you’re in shape for the summer.

INGREDIENTS 250g red lentils 400ml coconut milk a handful of fresh curry leaves a handful of fresh coriander 2 medium chopped tomatoes 1tsp turmeric 3 green chilis, deseeded and sliced 4tsp oil 2tsp black mustard seeds 2 onions, one chopped finely, one sliced. 300ml water Naan bread, to serve METHOD 1. Combine the lentils, coconut milk, tomatoes, chillis, turmeric and chopped onion in a saucepan. Add 300ml water, season with a pinch

of salt and pepper and simmer until the lentils are soft - approximately 20 minutes. 2. In a shallow pan, fry the sliced onion until crisp. 3. Add the curry leaves, coriander and mustard seeds and fry until they sizzle. 4. Transfer the lentil mixture from the pan into a serving dish. Spoon the onion and leaves mixture over

Spring/ Summer 2012 – The wedding season may be upon us, but a new survey by social sharing site Have You Seen has revealed a staggering one in five in Scotland (21%) would ditch the wedding of a friend or family member to save a bit of extra cash during a recession. These findings coincide with figures released this year, which found that the average wedding costs each guest a staggering £510 when presents, accommodation, transport and hen and stag parties are taken into consideration. And it seems the girls are the worst culprits when it comes to bailing out on a loved one’s special day, with female respondents in the UK almost a third more likely to pass on the confetti and cake than men (23% compared to 18% of men). Nine per cent would even sell a family heirloom as a way of earning a bit of extra cash. The potential dangers of part worn tyres

here are certain cars - not necessarily expensive sports cars or even the best, most reliable or useful cars - which we all admire. Here we count down the ten most familiar, well loved and longed for cars around:

he safety of vehicle tyres has been the focus of much media attention over the last few months. More tyre manufacturers’ commercials have appeared on television and Quentin Wilson, best known for his stint on BBC’s Top Gear, states that drivers are not sufficiently educated in tyre quality and maintenance, which is a significant factor in UK road death and injury. One much debated aspect of tyre safety is the use of second hand, part-worn tyres where the depth of the tread is less than in new tyres, but in the current economic climate these tyres are becoming a more popular choice as people try to stretch tight budgets and make savings. Critics argue that part worn tyres are not only dangerous, with unknown faults, but also represent false economy, whereas supporters argue that they are inexpensive and an effective method of fitting better tyres to a car. Despite some drivers suggesting that all tyres being used on the roads are effectively part worn, recent findings have shown that 50% of UK drivers who purchase these tyres do not know about the dangers associated with them. One aspect that is particularly disturbing about this growing trade is that the origin of these tyres is not known. A recent trading standards investigation conducted by Birmingham City Council uncovered part worn tyres with embedded nails, tread well below the legal requirement, cords that were exposed and, in one particular case, a 17-yearold tyre. During the course of the investigation, a quarter of the 190

Uncomfortable seats, a lack of speed and roaringly noisy engine are among the problems which has seen the Beetle named among the worst cars of all time. But still we love them. Porsche 911 No Porsche manufactured since has lived up to the 911. But perhaps it’s simply because few cars can better it for driveability or design - Porsche consistently adapted the design to appeal to everyone from curve-loving 60s swingers to 1980s city boys.

Shake off those aches and pains

Aston Martin DB9 Few new cars have captured the public imagination like the DB9, launched in 2004. Practically perfect in every way it lives up to previous DB incarnations and then some. A basic model may cost a similar price to a three bed terrace in South Wales but you know which you’d rather; VW Microbus Just packing up a bag, strapping your surfboard to the roof, loading The Beach Boys in to the tape deck and chugging down to Cornwall with all of your mates. It’s every kids dream and, judging by the prices fetched by campers to this day, for many the dream doesn’t fade. Citroen 2CV Only less recognisable than a Mini or a Beetle, the 2CV is as French as baguettes, frogs legs and Chanel. A French village is indeed incomplete without a rusting 2CV or two. Girls love them, men tolerate them. If only because James Bond drove one in For Your Eyes Only. Morris Minor Traveller Once the preserve of countryside vicars and greying old ladies with fox terriers, the wood-framed Moggy Minor Traveller has, somehow, never been cooler. Whatever it is that makes us long for tweed and spotted dick has turned the Traveller from style-death to chicerthan. Ford Escort MK1 Whilst modern Ford Escorts might be frowned upon by the chav-hating kids of the noughties the MK1 and MK2 models of the late sixties and seventies were everyman car perfection and remain a triumph of car design as far as retrolovers and rally drivers are concerned. VW Golf GTI MK2 If there’s one car which sums up the original boy racer it’s the MK2 GTIs which rolled off the production line from 1984. Still picked up and souped up to this day there’s just something about a white, convertible MK2 with rally lights.

part worn tyres examined had structural defects. A huge 90% were illegal because they lacked the correct legally-required identification marks for part worn tyres. However, clouding the debate is the suspicion that the major tyre manufacturers are exaggerating the potential danger of fitting part worn tyres because the purchase of them affects their profits. While there are laws in place that dictate the regulations as to the type of tyres that can be sold, their condition and the fact that they must be marked to identify them as used tyres, part of the problem lies in motorists not being educated in the law or indeed knowing what to look for on a tyre in terms of relevant markings. Most would be reliant on a supplier being able to tell them

that the tyre is in a legal condition and that it is marked correctly, but unscrupulous and disreputable suppliers may be economical with the truth. Nevertheless, since tyres are a major safety component of any vehicle it seems obvious that if you don’t know the history or origin of them it is best not to buy them. If your budget dictates that you must, then it would be logical to research, perhaps on the internet, to gain greater knowledge of the industry and the regulations governing it, before effectively gambling with your life. One thing is certain - while new tyres may stretch the budget a little further, drivers will always know their origin and history, and can be confident that they meet the required legal safety regulations.

ee County Vaulters had a successful trip to the Welsh Equestrian Vaulting Championships held at Northop Equestrian Centre, Northop College, Northop, Mold, last weekend. Hannah Eccles won the senior Individual female class vaulting on WH Bentley lunged by John Eccles. Andrew McLachlan was placed first in the junior male individual class vaulting on Tylers Kernel lunged by John Eccles. Hannah Young took 3rd place with Rebecca Norval 4th. Andrew and Rebecca then competed as a pair for the first time, winning the Junior Pas de deux class following an excellent freestyle performance. The Under 14 class was won by Harry Cox, vaulting on WH Bentely lunged by Ann Young. with Lisa Mercer taking 3rd place. 6 members of the club then competed in the Scottish Equestrian Vaulting team, winning the Junior Team class. The team consisted of Andrew McLachlan, Hannah Young, Rebecca Norval, Georgia Cox, Emma Patterson and Lisa Mercer vaulting on Tylers Kernel lunged by John Eccles. The club is now awaiting final confirmation of the selection for the European and World EquestrianVaulting Championships to be held this summer in Pezinok, Slovakia and Le Mans, France respectively.

Scottish Schools Athletics Championships

Grangemouth - 8/9 June 2012

here were 5 gold medals and a host of great performances as Central AC athletes swapped their club vest for their school colours at the Scottish schools athletics championships at Grangemouth at the weekend. Kathryn Gillespie of Dollar Academy, returning after a bronze at the UK school games in the Olympic stadium last month, was a comfortable winner in the Group B (age 15-16) girls 1500m, easing away from the field to finish 10 seconds clear in 4:41.84mins. Kathryn then attempted the double in the 800m and after setting out very fast in a bid to get the qualifying standard for the Olympic trials later this month, she faded in the home straight and was unaware of the opposition closing on her. Kathryn was unfortunately caught just before the line and with no time to react had to settle for silver in 2:13.28mins. With more races to come next weekend, an appearance at the Olympic trials is well within her reach which would be a tremendous achievement for prodigious the 15 year old. Another Dollar resident, Robert Burns, also landed a medal double. Robert, representing Kinross High in the Group D (Under 14) age group took victory in the Hammer then added a huge 4m to his best in the discus to add a silver medal with 27.40m.

Probably the happiest winner of the day was Ryan Calder of Wallace High who smashed his personal best to take Gold in the Group A (17 & over) Long Jump with 6.27m. This was a great achievement for Ryan who has recently recovered from a long injury lay off, to step onto the top of the podium having never previously come close to a medal in a championship. And there was a Central AC gold medal double in the girls 75m Hurdles. Caitlin Edgar of Morrison’s Academy, returning after a pentathlon bronze the week before, was a clear winner in the Group D event streaking away from the field in a personal best 11.87s, narrowly missing the championship record. Following on straight after was Dunblane girl Sarah Pearson in the Group C (age 14) final. This was a much tighter affair as Sarah finished neck and neck with her opponent with nobody sure who had won. It took several minutes before the photo finish confirmed Sarah as winner in a new personal best 11.69s. Also in the race was Sophie Parsons (McLaren High) who was pleased with her 7th place in a personal best 12.81s. Following on from this came Charlie Dineen of Dollar Academy who took bronze in the Group D boys 80m Hurdles in 13.31s, though Charlie could have achieved gold had he repeated his school record breaking run of 12.7s

ur ladies again provided the highlights of the week with Laura Walker and Louise Woodburn coming back from an early 3 hole deficit to beat Dunkeld away 4&3 to reach the last 16 of the SLGA Foursomes, while the Ladies Scratch team continued their winning ways with a thumping 4-1 defeat of Crieff at home on Friday. The Monday Twilight Medals continue to attract a good crowd and Blair Paterson took the honours this week on 18 pts. The Wednesday Gents Medal produced a 3 way tie on 68, with David Easton pipping Frank Lindin and Steven Smart on count back. The 3rd in the series of Izat Medals took centre stage on Saturday with a big field battling it out as the greens began to quicken up. James Elliot held off Steven Smart again on count back after they both shot 67 to win Division 1, while Anthony Granville won Division 2 with a superb 64, holding off Andrew Rettie by 1 shot. The ladies completed their SLGA Medal with Helen Ewen’s 67 winning Division 1 by 2 from young Eilidh Watson, with Ann McCrorie winning Bronze

with a 68 chased home by Kay Morrison on 69. Completing the week the Mixed Open Greensomes were held for the Mitchell Trophy on Sunday, where yet another fully subscribed event was enjoyed by over 140 players from all over Scotland. Muckhart’s Maureen Richardson and husband Steven from Forrester Park won the trophy with a superb 61, while the Scratch Prize was won by Tillicoultry couple R&M Jamieson on 79 who are pictured here with Club Captain Ian Barker.. Next weekend sees the qualifying 36 holes for the Tulliehasset Club Strokeplay Championship, while we have a break from Opens for a few weeks to get ready for the GentsSeniors Event on 28th June. The club have also released details of a Summer Opening Day on 24th June when half yearly memberships are available. The Wasps will be keeping their purple and blue away kits for the 2012/2013 season. One Wasps fan told the Wee County News: “I quite like the new kit, it is different to the hoops that we have had in the past. I know that some of my buddies dont like the new one - they prefer the hoops.”

ith the departure of Paulo Sergio at Hearts, the jungle drums have been beating hard that Alloa’s Paul Hartley has been shortlisted as one of the candidates for the vacant position. Not surprising really is it? Paul arrived at Alloa and has had an extraordinary rookie season as a manager as he guided Alloa to the league title. Hartley, who enjoyed a good spell playing for Hearts is believed to be interested in the Hearts job and said; ”Its flattering to be linked with the job at Hearts. “Talk is just speculation at the moment.” Whilst some say that it would be a great move for Hartley, some argue that it may also be too soon in his managerial career to step up to such a demanding role. Alloa Athletic Chairman Mike Mulraney said; “Whilst we are a little disappointed about the prospect of Paul leaving, we would never stand in his way. “People are talking about the club for all of the right reasons, meaning we must be doing something right. “Paul has done exceptionally well since his arrival and we know that good work always gets noticed in football.” Hartley has been getting the approval from former team mate Craig Gordon who feels that Hartley would be the ideal candidate for the job. It was believed that Hartley did not return to Hearts after a spell with Cardiff City due to his involvement with the player revolt, with Gordon and now Falkirk boss Stephen Pressley, instead going to Aberdeen. Wether or not being part of the ‘Ricarton Three’ may have an impact on his chances, who knows. Hartley recently picked up the coveted title of Irn Bru Division Three manager of the year at the Scottish Football League annual awards. The award evening was held at the end of May in Glasgow. On loan striker, Stevie May was also recognised at the award ceremony as the St Johnstone striker picked up the title of Irn Bru Third Division player of the year AND also picked up the Irn Bru Scottish Football League Young Player of the Year award.

After a demanding and successful season for both sides, they had players missing due to injury and holidays but it still looked set to be a great tie if the pre match build up was anything to go by. pretty dull cup final as both teams cancelled each other out for long spells, and after 90 minutes it was still level. Neither goalkeeper was really forced to make any saves. Heading into extra time you could sense that something would give and it was Oakwood who took the advantage when the game burst into life in the 111 min. Oakwood’s Scott Kennedy blasted home from 25 yards to

send them in front. And 2 minutes later the game was technically over when Danny Kazta burst into the box to chip over the out rushing Kirkham in the Treetops goal. Kirkham was then booked for mouthing off at the assistant referee after the goalkeeper was unhappy at a decision the official gave. Not happy by this, Kirkham then challenged the official to a fight saying; “I will see you after the game.”

Kazta made it three- nil in the final seconds of the game to give the Sauchie based side the win. Meanwhile, Kirkham still furious with the official walked off the pitch without shaking hands with anyone, nor did he collect his medal. He was then seen storming off from the ground after an altercation with the referee this time. Oakwood were celebrating a treble winning season and well done to them.
