SECURITY BREACH BY BANK STAFF OR WAS IT JUST THE CLEANERS?
S
ecurity at an Alloa bank has come under question this week as it appeared that the staff had gone home and left the window open. The ‘blunder’ was spotted at the Alloa branch of Lloyds TSB around 7:30pm in the evening. One witness said; “I could not believe what I saw, I was walking down the lane off Drysdale Street from the car park at the rear when I noticed the light on in the bank. “As it was around half past seven, I was drawn to the light left on in the bank as I found it unusual. I then noticed that the window was open too! “I went about my business, and whilst I was returning to my car some time later, the window was

still open and the light was still on. “There appeared to be no other activity in the bank as it looked to be in complete darkness.” The window that was open was in the back office of the branch that had no additional security features such as bars or grates on it (as seen in the picture). The ‘blunder’ is being played down by the bank, advising that

cleaners where in the branch at the time. Despite it being in the evening, we can appreciate that the cleaners must have been working exceptionally hard, and that the air conditioning was switched off, meaning they would need to open a window in the back office to ventilate the branch. Lloyds released the following statement.
“We can confirm that at the time in question the window was open while the cleaners were in preparing the branch. “We have strict security procedures in place for all our properties which are followed rigorously.” They went on to confirm what those included; checking paperwork is securely away, checking that safes are locked, no one is left or
hiding in the building, check ATMs and that the building has not been tampered with, check to see that no one is loitering about outside and to ensure that doors and windows closed and locked. The window in question now has a sign attached to it within the office space. We can only assume that it is reminding the ‘cleaners’ not to open the window.

weecounty LETTERS Dear weecounty, Your column on phone scams 15th May. One woman was conned of a 3 figure sum was that £100 or £999? (Not much difference) and another of a same figure. While we must feel for these people it is worth remembering Dear weecounty, With so many weddings of convenience and arranged marriages happening in Councils across Scotland, it was heartwarming at the first Council meeting on Thursday to witness the true meeting of hearts and minds between the SNP Councillors and Independent Councillor Archie Drummond
warnings and exposures on T.V + press of the scam who perpetrate this. A few years ago my wife & I received a call from one claiming to buy+ sell timeshares + an offer of £4,500 had been offered for our own flat in Portugal. I told the caller we
had no such place + he was scamming at this point he became rather irate+ answered me it was “straight up”. For “only £280” his would be transacted, legal in every way knowing this was a con. I decided to kick + asked for more details + within a week photo-

as they carved up Clackmannanshire Council to their mutual satisfaction. One wonders why they were so coy in declaring their affection for one another before the event, after all what cements a relationship more than mutual benefits. The SNP gets control of the Council and a like-minded bedfellow and Councillor
Drummond gets the gift of chairing two committees. As they set up house together spare a thought for the jilted voters in the Hillfoots who thought they were voting for a politically independent voice and mind. Yours, tongue firmly in cheek.

I read the ‘Tilli residents live in fear’ story and I am interested in what action the councillors and Central Scotland Police are taking on the matter. Campaign to recruit foster carers underway
A
campaign got underway this week in Clackmannanshire to try and alleviate the desperate shortage of foster carers. The campaign is part of Foster Care Fortnight in Scotland, which runs from 14th May to 28th May. To help raise awareness, a fostering recruitment stand will be in the foyer at Morrisons Supermarket, Clackmannan Road, Alloa on Friday 25th May form 10am-5pm. The stand will be manned throughout the day by the council’s fostering and adoption team, as well as current carers, who will be on hand
to answer any questions and explain everything required before the first step is taken to become a foster carer. Flyers will be handed out as well as full information packs, including registration of interest forms. Local bus shelters will also be displaying adverts as part of the recruitment drive, encouraging people in Clackmannanshire to become foster carers. How can a child be expected to cope, especially if they lost all contact with their family and friends and having to start a new school and join new clubs and take up new activities.
You could help prevent all that, and allow the child to stay nearby, and as much as possible, maintain the same routines. That is what Clackmannanshire Council wants for the children in its care, and keep them close to home in safe placements. During the process to be-

come approved carers all the various checks are carried out and the relevant training given. Head of Social Services, Deirdre Cilliers, said: “We desperately need more local foster carers and help offer a child a secure home during a difficult time in their lives. The recruitment drive is vital as we need around 10 new
carers. “Council foster carers can be single, in a relationship or married. Whether you have children of your own or not isn’t important: that you have room in your home and patience and understanding is crucial.” Social workers work closely with foster carers, offering training and advice.
Foster carers also receive an allowance for each child fostered. If you have the care and attention to give to vulnerable children and would like to find out more call 01259 450000, e-mail childcare@ clacks.gov.uk or look at ClacksWeb for more information. You could make all the difference to a child’s future.

Independent was predictable
Labour leader, Bobby McGill: “
As predicted, the “Independent” Councillor Archie Drummond, chose to elect an SNP Administration via the Provost’s vote. He then voted with them another eight times, giving them Leader and all other key positions within Clackmannanshire Council. “Councillor Drummond had said he wanted to be the independent voice on the council - but when he had the opportunity to demonstrate this he revealed his true colours. The fact that Archie is now the Convener of the Regulatory Committee and the proud holder of the Scrutiny Portfolio speaks volumes. “When challenged earlier in the year about the matter of Scrutiny, Councillor Gary Womersley in front of a full council meeting stated quite clearly that Scrutiny would be given to the main opposition party (as best practice dictates) after the election. I am disappointed that in his acceptance speech just minutes after assuming his role as the Leader of the Administration, he broke his word on this. “Gary then went on to say that he wanted to be “inclusive” and work with all councillors, yet he allocated no committees or convener-ships to the 8-member Labour Group. How inclusive is that?
Gordon Banks joins TV Doctor Dr Chris Steele in support of better diagnosis of coeliac disease
G
“This is most definitely a taste of things to come, an SNP dictatorship - with Archie Drummond - the “Independence” candidate - there when they need him. What a let down for all those who voted in good faith for the man.”
ordon Banks MP for Ochil and South Perthshire joined celebrity TV GP, Dr Chris Steele MBE, the resident doctor on ITV’s This Morning, at a reception in Parliament to support Coeliac UK’s campaign to improve the diagnosis and awareness of coeliac disease and the need to improve the availability of gluten-free food. Coeliac disease affects 1 in 100 people in the UK and is a serious autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system reacts to gluten found in wheat, barely and rye, making the body attack itself. If left undiagnosed, the disease can lead to infertility, multiple miscarriages, osteoporosis and bowel cancer. Recent research has shown that patients have had to wait on average 13 years from first onset of symptoms to diagnosis and that only 10 – 15 percent of those affected have been diagnosed, leaving over 500,000 people in the UK currently undiagnosed and at risk. Dr Chris Steele MBE, who has recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease himself, is the Health Ambassador for Coeliac UK. The reception, which was attended by MPs, Peers and supporters of the charity was held as part of Coeliac UK’s Awareness Week, The Glutenfree Challenge. The aim of the campaign is to promote understanding about coeliac disease and the
need for increased glutenfree provision across the hospitality industry and asks the nation to try something gluten-free during the week. Gordon Banks MP said: “I am supporting Coeliac UK, the national charity for people with coeliac disease and their campaign to improve the awareness and diagnosis of the condition and the increased provision of gluten-free food. For many of those diagnosed, eating out is a continuous challenge which affects their lives every day. This campaign aims to make eating out possible for all people with coeliac disease, to significantly improve their quality of life and create understanding of
their condition.” Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, which is found in bread, pasta, pizza, cakes and beer etc. However, it is also often used in a wide range of products including mayonnaise, soy sauce, sauces, sausages and many processed goods. Sarah Sleet, Chief Executive of Coeliac UK said: “Many people may have struggled for years to get diagnosed with coeliac disease and are then faced with a complete change in diet and lifestyle. For them it is not a matter of choice or a faddy diet, it is the only treatment for their condition and is essential for the rest of their life.”

hild Care social workers have been praised for a successful event aimed at raising awareness of internet safety. Esafety partnership were invited by UKCIS (UK child Internet safety) and the Scottish Government to host a stand with interactive vehicles at the recent Esafety Live event. They joined up with around 200 delegates from various organisations, including education and health. There was a huge amount of Interest in the partnership’s work
and facilities at the event which has lead to invitations to attend in several other areas out with Forth Valley. Head of Social Services, Deirdre Cilliers, said: “Official feedback is still awaited, however the Esafety partnership were personally thanked by the organisers. “Feedback on the day from delegates was very positive. New Provost - Tina Murphy
I
t is great honour to be elected as a councillor for your ward and a privilege to be the Civic Head of the council as the Provost of Clackmannanshire. Can I firstly thank everyone who took the time to come out and vote and also to all who used the postal vote system that returned me as a councillor for Ward!. I am also indebted to my family and friends who helped with the campaign and also who spent time at the polling stations on the day of the election itself. We, as in all councillors, will all have a hard five years ahead. The world economy
is in turmoil with the threat of countries going bankrupt. We, in GB are in a “double dip” recession and the euro in crisis” continues to cause problems worldwide and we will not escape the fallout from it. We are charged with raising the profile of Clackmannanshire, bringing jobs business and stability to help those who’s life is blighted by years of living on benefits or low income. This is no easy talk but we will have to work towards the goal of reducing unemployment, especially youth unemployment and increasing our housing stock.
Linking the two will go some way to resolving these issues. In my role as the Civic Head of Clackmannanshire i pledge to take every opportunity to engage with others to promote our council area and the people of Clackmannanshire, they are ones of our best assets. We live in an area of natural beauty and have much to be proud of. We also have excellent road and rail links that will be attractive to business and visitors alike. I spent Sunday with a fantastic bunch of people at the Fourth Region Scouts Activity day at Barrwood near Denny. Nearly three thousand folk having the
Council Leader - Gary Womersley
I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have, over the piece, played a role in all of the events which ultimately cumulated in the vote before Council last week, which saw an SNP Administration returned at Clackmannanshire Council. I can certainly say that I am genuinely humbled by my re-appointment as Council Leader – which I am advised that is a first for any SNP Group Leader to be re-appointed from one term to another – and for that I am genuinely appreciative. As stated by myself at the Election Count at Alloa Town Hall, the SNP stood on a positive, proactive agenda and I am particularly glad that an SNP-led Administration will be able to maintain the momentum created since our taking control of the Council in the New Year. Obviously, as intensively as myself and the whole SNP Group worked on a whole range of key initiatives - stretching from seeking to bring much-needed good stewardship to the Council’s finances, re-investing in Council staff and improving morale, to saving the public toilets in Alloa – we were all keen to do so much more than the time from January to this month’s election allowed. Now that we have been returned with one more Councillor compared to the previous election and, perhaps more significantly, with over 25% more votes than the main opposition party, this is a much welcome endorsement of those changes we sought to initiate. Yes, as I am all too aware, there will be challenging times ahead, but I am convinced that it is well within the capability of this SNPLed Administration, working with all Councillors to seek to achieve the very, very best possible outcomes for the whole of Clackmannanshire. In that regard, I am of the view that irrespective of party loyalties or whatever banner Councillors stood on at the elections, hopefully we can all as Councillors use that collective motivation to achieve what is best for Clackmannanshire, as we face those challenges. If we are to remember that the similarities that unite us far exceed the differences between us, I am confident that the common goal of seeking the best for Clackmannanshire can be best achieved. Whilst I am therefore happy that, whereas I spoke of my own appreciation and humility at being re-appointed as Council Leader, such
time of their lives and I did not want to leave. I did meet Bear Grylls too! It is these young people and their future we have to work for. I have some ideas that I would like to implement as Provost and i will talk these through with the group and officers- so watch this space as they say. For those who did not vote for either me as Provost or the SNP can I reassure you that i will work tirelessly for everyone in Clackmannanshire and use my role to promote our council area to whoever i meet or wherever I go through out my term of office.
New Council Administration Announced
C
lackmannanshire Council agreed its new administration at a meeting today. Councillor Tina Murphy was appointed Provost. Provost Murphy said: “It is a great honour to be re-elected as the civic head of Clackmannanshire Council and I look forward to the next five years. We will be firmly focussed on the work ahead of us.” The SNP took control of the council by way of a minority administration Councillor Gary Womersley was appointed Leader of the Council, with Councillor Craig Holden as Depute Leader. Councillor Womersley said: “I would like to
thank everyone who has voted for me, the first time that the SNP have ever had a Council Leader re-elected to the position. As a minority administration we want to work with all people around the table. “ It is a huge endorsement for our administration since taking over in January. We had one more councillor elected than we had before and we can now begin the work of carrying through the promises on our manifesto and to work for the people of Clackmannanshire.” Councillor Irene Hamilton and Councillor Donald Balsillie were each elected as Depute Provosts of the Council.
Top Quality LUXURY a dynamic will be mirrored by the SNP-led Administration as a whole, not because we are a minority administration but because we believe that by doing so it will be better for Clackmannanshire. Accordingly, I look forward to a markedly different way that the Council will conduct business. Prior to the SNP taking control of the Council, too many Council decisions were taken not at Council but behind closed doors by Portfolio holders with vague titles and remits, which neither other fellow Councillors or the public could examine or question. I have already given notice that the SNP-led Administration will change Council decision-making structures, to make these more transparent to all Councillors and the public. In order to re-establish the link between what the Council does, on a whole range of matters such as Education, Housing, Social Care, Leisure and so on, I am keen that this Council works in a manner that is more accountable and transparent for all concerned, than it has certainly been prior to our taking control. The Council and how it has been operating needs thoroughly brought up-to-date and I look forward to delivering on this key manifesto pledge. It is only by being more accountable and transparent that we can fully ensure that we are delivering the right results for Clackmannanshire. I look forward to progressing the ambitious SNP manifesto commitments for Clackmannanshire, on such a new progressive basis. Thank you.

Tillicoultry school grounds Open Day A
new all weather woodland path and running track costing £11,000 was officially opened on Saturday as part of Tillicoultry Primary School’s Open Day. Organised by the Parent Council, the event on Saturday, 19th May, included wildflower planting and a litter pick. The event took place between 10am and 12 noon. With the help of the Country-
side Rangers and supervision by parent volunteers pupils were also able to experience burn dipping and water beasties, fire lighting and marshmallow toasting. Other outdoor activities taking place included shelter building. Refreshments and home baking were also available. The highlight of the Open Day was the opening of the school’s woodland path and running track. Staff and pupils in the school have planned the running track over the last few years and have worked together to decide on the route and how it could also be used as a excellent community facility. Head of Education, Belinda Greer, said: “The Parent Council have supported the school with fund raising activities and applications for grant funding. Staff and pupils at Tillicoultry Primary School are very proud of the effort
shown by all involved in fund raising to create the path, and have been delighted with the terrific support shown by the local community.” The school, awarded £4,000 by the Clackmannanshire and Stirling Environment Trust, are also working in partnership with Grounds for Learning as part of a partnership with Clackmannanshire Council’s programme to improve school grounds. They were awarded £3,000 through the programme. The school also organised a sponsored run around the route the path which raised a

On going improvements to the school grounds will have a significant impact on future teaching and learning. Patricia added: “Encouraging pupils to re-connect with their natural environment, the path will provide a fun resource which will allow pupils more ready ac-

The track winds its way through the wooded area in the grounds of Tillicoultry Primary School, before encircling the playing fields, providing a level pathway which is dry underfoot no mattert the weather conditions. Head Teacher at Tillicoultry Primary School, Patricia Paterson, said: “Although parts of the path encounter a gentle slope, pupils of the Health and Wellbeing committee designed it to be buggy, wheelchair, runner and walker friendly and they have been very pleased to hear that it is popular not only with pupils during school hours, but also with the local community at

lackmannanshire Council, working with partners to deliver a faster and more consistent broadband service to residents and businesses across Clackmannanshire, have carried out a survey involving both businesses and the community. As part of this work, the Council is working alongside Stirling Council and other partners, including Forth Valley and Lomond Leader, to deliver a pilot project called ClacksMax. Clackmannanshire and Stirling Councils conducted an online survey with businesses between August 2011 and February 2012 to gather evidence on the following: • Broadband download and upload speeds by geography; • Information on how broadband is used by businesses; and • Information on any current issues with broadband service provision. The evidence gathered will be used by the Councils to support funding applications to
improve the existing broadband infrastructure across the Clackmannanshire and Stirling Council areas. The download speeds and post-code information collected by the survey will also be used to map broadband speeds across the area. The survey was publicised widely by the Councils and the local and community press. A total of 248 businesses completed the survey after networking with staff from the local authorities, with replies from businesses based in: • Stirling Council area – 75.8% • Clackmannanshire Council area – 23.4% A total of 916 returns were received to the communities broadband survey, with replies from residents based in: • Stirling Council area – 62.3% • Clackmannanshire Council area – 37.2% Nearly all respondents (99%) had upload speeds of 2 MB or less. The project is aimed at providing a new wireless broadband service in parts of Clackmannanshire and rural Stirling.
Initially focused on Alloa West, Tillicoultry, Bandeath and Touch Business Parks and nearby villages of Throsk, Cambusbarron and South Alloa, this pilot service will be in place by the end of the year. Research has shown that businesses that adopt broadband-based processes can improve their employees’ labour productivity on average by 5% in the manufacturing centre and by 10% in the service sector. The Scottish Government has targets to deliver broadband speeds of at least 2Mbit/s to all homes and businesses by 2015 and 24Mbit/s to 90%, also by 2015. The Government will soon make a limited amount of funding available to help achieve this ambition. Clackmannanshire Council, in partnership with Stirling Council, hopes to make a further successful bid for funding to help ensure that high speed broadband is available to people in all parts of both Council areas.

he Olympic Flame will be carried through Alloa by Torchbearers on the morning of Wednesday 13th June as part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. Plans are progressing well for viewing areas along the route and the council are confident that there will be great support from local people. Road closures will be necessary between 8.00am and 10.00am to allow this historic event to take place and the council are asking residents to pay attention to these closures particularly as they will be in the early morning, a peak time for deliveries and commuters. The Town Centre BID’s plans for a Olympic
Torch themed treasure hunt competition in the run up to 13th June is designed to help raise awareness and excitement about this event. Michael Reilly, Clackmannanshire Council’s Partnership and Community Support Officer will be visiting as many premises along the route as possible over the next week or so and is looking forward to meeting the businesses and discussing any concerns or questions about the event and the effect it may have on their business. Michael said; “I hope that we can work together to ensure this event is a memorable day, and that the local business community takes this opportunity to join in Alloa’s ‘moment to shine’.”
Alva Academy English Teachers get set to run in memory of their colleague By Ashleigh Elliott
A
group of Alva Academy English teachers have got together to walk, jog and run the race for life event in memory of a teacher who sadly died in their department and for a teacher who was given the all clear from cancer. Betty Campbell was the teacher who sadly passed away on 9th January 2012 and with Catherine Wylie being diagnosed with cancer and recently having been given the all clear, this is why Rona Grant came up with the idea. The department had been through 2 big issues and the English teachers thought this would be helpful because of what had happened. So far, the teachers have raised £865 which was done by putting it on Facebook and getting the other teachers to sponsor. They will be wearing silly things on the day, one of the teachers is going as Elvis. After the race Catherine Wylie has invited the teachers who are doing the race back to her house to have a glass of bubbly. Betty Campbell wrote a poem called ‘TWA Gallus Lassies’ this is why the group have decided to name themselves the Gallus Lassies. As Rona Grant said; “Betty Campbell would be the one who would organise and take part in such a well known charity.”

ASCEnt unemployed show community spirit C
lackmannanshire Council’s Community Wardens team gave their full support and backing to a group of unemployed who carried out two environmental projects in two locations in the county. A group of 10 participants did a terrific job, to help maintain the Community garden at Hawkhill Community Centre, as well as doing a litter pick and clean up of the Devonway from Sauchie to Tillicoultry. The work, carried
out over three days, was organised by ASCEnt to Employment, a social enterprise based in Stirling with charitable objectives that provides employability services and training. The council’s Community Warden’s team, in conjunction with the Stirling based social enterprise group, helped in the planning and supervision of the project. Head of Community and Regulatory Services, John
Gillespie, said: “A running theme during the overall 10 week programme is the importance of communities, encouraging participants to be more socially aware and to take pride in the areas they live in.” The community project consisted of two elements, beginning with a clean up of Hawkhill Community Centre’s garden, where the learners spent two days digging up the turf and weeds in order for new turf or bark and new plants. This was followed on the final day with a litter pick along the Devon Way, from Sauchie to Tillicoultry. Ally Scott, Learning Adviser for ASCEnt Scotland, said: “We actively encourage the participants to engage in the project on every level in order for them to achieve maximum value and to create a sense of ownership. “This also increases employability skills through team building, planning, project management, leadership skills, risk assessments, communication skills, health and safety awareness and motivation.” It is a programme delivered on behalf of the Department of Work and Pensions which gives unemployed people who are 18 years and over the opportunity to build their confidence, their experience and their employability skills to enable them to make positive strides in their career and life choices.

GREEN FUNDING AWARDED TO PROJECT IN CLACKMANNANSHIRE
A
local environmental project in Clackmannanshire, which aims to transform the central belt region into a better place for people to live and do business in, has been given a £9,000 cash boost from the Central Scotland Green Network Development Fund. The £9,810 funding was awarded to Clackmannanshire Council to improve the amenity and biodiversity value of the southern end of the Devon Way, with native trees and shrubs planted by local school children to enhance the route. Thirty eight greenspace projects in total across Edinburgh, the Lothians, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Fife, Renfrewshire, Ayrshire, Stirling and Clackmannanshire received a share of the £2.2 million funding boost. Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Stewart Stevenson,
said: “The CSGN project is the biggest greenspace project of its kind in Europe. The area involved is huge with 70 per cent of Scotland’s population potentially being affected. “The long-term plan is to transform the central belt into a more vibrant place with better economic potential for business. “The funding announced today will act as a catalyst in preparing the way to bringing change to life across the central belt. “I am pleased that the projects will directly improve the environment but also give many young unemployed people a chance to improve their employment prospects for the future.” Keith Geddes, Chair for the Central Scotland Green Network Partnership Board, added: “Delivering the CSGN is a long-term initiative and we rely on local environmental projects to help us deliver a greener, stronger, healthier central belt on the ground.
“It is fantastic that the CSGN Development Fund is able to give projects in Clackmannanshire some financial support towards their work which will not only bring environmental benefits, but also have a positive impact on business and employment, health and wellbeing, and community spirit.” The CSGN stretches from Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Dunbartonshire in the west through to Fife and East Lothian in the east. Forestry Commission Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage are both joint lead partners for the development of the CSGN project, and are responsible for administering the CSGN Development Fund. The fund has been boosted with a £450,000 contribution from the Scottish Government. For more information about the Central Scotland Green Network, please visit www. centralscotlandgreennetwork. org
Pupils hold community fayre for St John’s Primary School
By Conor McQuillian
S
t John’s Primary School children have put hard work and great efforts into the schools fayre. Earning well over £2012! The children deserve congratulations, as everyone from the primary ones - who contributed handmade miscellaneous items - all the way up to the primary sevens put their heart and soul into the school fayre. The school staff along with the Parent Teachers Association worked tirelessly on the build up to the day, making sure the event was safe and as enjoyable as possible for the pupils and the guests who attended. Many of the pupils, parents also helped keep
the passionate spirit for the school going by volunteering their time to help out on the 12th of May. Katherine Yeomans , Secretary of the PSA , who has two daughters at St John’s said; “We hoped to make the Fayre our biggest fundraiser of the year, aiming to raise £2012+ in 2012. “As the Wee County News goes to print, we don’t have a final figure for the Fayre but when combined with the income from our Big Spring Raffle (which was drawn on the day of the Fayre), we will easily meet our target which is brilliant news!” The overall attendance delighted Head teacher Ian McNicol, he also
commented; “We really value the assistance we get from the PSA. I’d like to take this opportunity through your newspaper [Wee County News] to thank them, the St John’s Primary School Community and the wider local community for all their support.” PSA has a very positive attitude towards school activities, they run and support many activities such as: discos, subsidise school trips, cover the costs of visiting theatre companies and purchase items to enhance pupils’ educational experience. The PSA would like to thank everyone who supported the Fayre in any way.

Sauchie’s Soup & Sandwiches By Conor McQuillian
L
ast Thursday, Keith Turner held a soup and sandwiches day in the Sauchie Resource centre. The event was conjured up as an idea to help bring the community closer together, with a whole range of people attending masses. Cllr Graham Watt, who has been a
community activist for the whole of his adult life said; “It was encouraging to see so many people together, the outcome was a great indication to the future of like minded events.” Anne Airnes and Keith Turner each made a batch of homemade soup to distribute amongst the guests as they poured in from the Sauchie Main Street. Around 57 people attended brin-
ing in £114 at £2 a head. Keith said; “It was a great turn out, the amount of support we received suggested it will continue on to be a great success.” Cllr Derek Stewart was another high profiler who attended the event said; “It has been a great success, going strength to strength. I think £2 is great value for such great and fresh sandwiches and soup, also the money is going to a great cause.”
The event was originally held on a Saturday, but due to a lack of interest shown the date has been changed to a Thursday, and since that decision the interest had intensified, the event was organised in order to fundraising for the Sauchie community group.

Young Fox Cub Saved A By Michelle Henderson
ten week old fox cub is currently on route to making a full recovery in the Scottish SPCA’s care centre. At present, no one is sure how, but the cub had fallen into a pipe and become trapped in the enclosed space in the grounds of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at little France on Thursday (17th of May. The chances of survival were very bleak. Until the “canine hero” Rover stumbled across the young male cub and brought his owners attention to the cubs distress. Rovers an eleven year old collie cross Labrador, stood tall next to the pipe barking and refusing to move on. Very quickly it had become apparent that there was a problem and once the cub was discovered squeezed at the bottom of the pipe, Scotland’s animal welfare charity had to be called to help. Animal Rescue Officer Steph Grant rushed to the location where she was able to release him from the pipe and take him to the charity’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre in Fishcross, where he has already been named Jacob by the staff.

Steph said; “The overflow pipe that Jacob had become trapped inside was extremely narrow and there is no way he would have been able to get himself out. Thankfully, I was able to rescue him from the tight spot he was in and, although frightened, he didn’t have any injuries. Steph continued; “We don’t know how he managed to get himself into the pipe but one thing is for sure, Rover is a true canine hero for finding him.” National Wildlife Rescue Centre Manager Colin Seddon said; “Jacob was very lucky to have been discovered as he would have perished other-

Q’s Views! ABUSIVE EMAILS Bill Miller, the man who recently withdrew his interest in buying Rangers, has stated that he received thousands of abusive emails from fans. If he’s received thousands of emails, then I’d love to see Craig Whyte’s Inbox by comparison In one of my old workplaces, the IT department brought in measures whereby if you sent an email containing swear words, it would automatically block the email and send you a warning plus how many “points” you had received. The more severe the swear word, and the more times you swore, the more points you got. My mate got 2000 points for forwarding an interview with Colin Farrell. Anyway, in a fit of childishness one afternoon, we figured out that there was a limit to the number of swear words that could be picked up by the system, so began testing it by sending unusual or parochial rude words to each other.

The Wee County is pleased to have the infamous ‘Q, from Airdrie’ writing for the Entertainment Pages, to give you all some comic relief. As a regular contributor to the Glasgow Metro newspaper, and a regular in the comedy scene in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Q has given the Wee County an exclusive column, which we are sure will have you wanting for more in the next edition of the Wee County!
Within hours we had a list of rude words that could be sent by email with impunity. Personally I was in favour of the swear words filter. It saved my bacon one day when I made a typo in the name of a client I emailed. His name was Mr Fluck.

Anyway, I went into the pub, walked into the toilet, and found a young lady behind the door. We both looked at each other stunned. Then to add to the surprise of the young lady, two guys also walked in. - “I’m so sorry, I’m in the wrong bathroom!” she cried, embarrassed. But it was quite amusing. Prince Charles says that his favourite show is the weather. I hope they never let David Cameron present the weather. Judging by his economic predictions, I’d expect him to deliver a forecast of fire and brimstone.

MESSAGE FOR DENNIS SKINNER If you want to heckle during the Queen’s delivery of David Cameron’s speech, please shout something funny. Shouting out to remind her that the economy has incurred a “double dip” during her Diamond Jubilee is merely a statement of fact, not a heckle. MESSAGE FOR ECONOMISTS Please please PLEASE stop referring to the latest twist in the UK economic crisis as “a double dip”. You make it sound like an item of confectionary. AND FINALLY A few years ago, my mate Spanner appeared in the audience for a live edition of “Question Time”. When he realised it was live, and that the producers would only have milliseconds to react to any naughtiness from him, he decided to mouth a swear word at the camera. This was seen by millions of viewers, but not the producers. With that in mind, Will.i.am of BBC’s “The Voice” should stop pretending that the finale every Sunday is recorded live. Alternatively, he should prove that the show is live, and next time he’s on Twitter say “Tonight I will prove that the show is recorded live, by flashing my butt at the camera”. Various people I know find him quite sexy, so would pay double the licence fee to see that.

Snow patrol TITP
Keeping fit. With summer coming upon us everyone wants to look their best, so I am going to start doing a keep fit schedule every week with new workouts so you will be fit and in shape in no time! This week we will start with something simple - crunches. Crunches are one of the best ways to help you tone up your stomach, it doesn’t help you lose weight but if you go walking and watch what you’re eating and then do your crunches at night this will help you lose weight and tone up. You can do as many as you would feel like doing but remember don’t push yourself to much as you can injure yourself. On your first couple of times using this exercise personally I would do around one hundred a day and take a twenty second break in-between every twenty you do. I can’t say this exercise will help everyone because everyone is different in their own way but id sure give it a go because if it helps its something you can do in your own home now need to spend any money.
With T in the park coming up this summer, I am choosing a singer/ band to talk about each week to let you know the sights of them at the moment. I have chosen Snow Patrol this week because the band will be headlining T in the park on Friday 6th July, and the band has an outstanding sell outs on their albums. As I said last week, nobody knows what the bands will be performing but I would say Snow Patrol are performing their top five songs which are, “Chasing Cars” which was nominated in 2007 for best British single and best rock song people can relate to this song through its lyrics they are very tender, “Run” the song brought the bands first taste of mainstream success reaching number 5 on the UK charts, the lyrics are touching and beautiful. “Set the Fire to the Third Bar” featuring Martha Wainwright, “Chocolate song” is excellent will never get old people can relate to the lyrics of the song, “Just Say Yes” lyrics are moving and beautiful. Snow Patrol are a band that a lot of people can relate to and their songs. The song Run is my personal favourite because the lyrics are moving and can describe how you are feeling in all different ways. The band has sold over ten million albums worldwide, if you are going to T in the park this year Snow Patrol are must see band!

If I charge a colleague petrol money for a lift to work, this may invalidate my insurance. A commonly held myth is that your policy may be invalidated if you charge a colleague petrol money for a lift to work. As long as you are not making a profit from providing a lift, your insurance should be perfectly valid. However, this does raise questions about when you can and can’t use your car. Your policy may be void if you use your car for purposes it is not covered for. Most policies have social, domestic and pleasure use, some will have commuting too. However, if this is all you have you cannot use your car in connection with work, such as going to appointments or making deliveries. For this you will require extra cover.
elephant.co.uk explains the truth about the ten
most common car insurance myths D
espite being the only form of insurance required by law, car insurance is still a mystery to many motorists. Obviously policies differ from insurer to insurer, but car insurance expert, elephant. co.uk has looked at the ten most common myths and misunderstandings motorists have about car insurance in order to shed some light. I can save money on my insurance by putting it in someone else’s name and being the named driver. Insurers cottoned on to this idea a long time ago, they will ask how many cars are in each house and who is the main driver. If you don’t tell the truth you could make your insurance invalid. Insurers have means by which they can find out who the main user of a car is and if you are trying to claim and they find that you are not the main driver of the car, they could refuse to deal with it. But that doesn’t stop some motorists, often young people, from trying to put the insurance in their Mum’s name! This is known as fronting and is seen as a type of fraud.
I can claim for the full cost of any personal effects stolen if my car is broken into. Most insurance companies have an upper limit for the amount they will pay for items stolen from a car. This is typically £100 or £150, not including a stereo. A lot of motorists think they can claim for as much as they want but are soon disappointed when they contact their insurer. Managing director of elephant.co.uk, Brian Martin said, “In common with most insurers, elephant.co.uk limits the amount it pays for personal effects to £100, obviously this doesn’t go far if say a laptop or mobile phone are stolen. We want to discourage motorists from leaving anything on show in their cars that could tempt a thief.” I won’t have to pay an excess if an accident is not my fault or my car is stolen. An excess is agreed at the time a policy is purchased and it is the first part of any claim cost which the policyholder agrees to pay ifthey make a claim. It is really an agreement

with the insurance company. If an accident is not your fault you may only get your excess back if your insurance company gets all of its money back from the third party or their insurer. In cases where your car is stolen it is unlikely that this will happen so you will almost definitely have to pay your excess. A lot of people choose to take out a higher excess in return for a reduction in their premium. They might think they will never need to make a claim, but they should consider if they can afford the higher excess when they buy their insurance. If I take out comprehensive cover, I automatically get ‘driving other cars’ cover. Therefore I am covered fully comprehensively on anybody’s car I drive with their permission. Many people mistakenly think that taking out a comprehensive policy automatically includes ‘driving other cars’ cover; and means they are fully covered to drive any car. Most policies, however, will provide this benefit only in certain circumstances and may not offer it for a number of reasons. Also, ‘driving other cars’ cover covers the policyholder only for third party cover if you drive someone else’s car. So if you are involved in an accident in another car, you could be liable for your own damage, which could prove very costly. Brian Martin continued, “It’s important to know the conditions of your insurance so you don’t come unstuck if you have to make a claim. “It is also worth remembering that due to changes in the law, it is a requirement for the vehicle to have a permanent insurance policy in force, even if you are driving the vehicle under the ‘driving other cars’ benefit. I
weecounty
know many people don’t read the details of their policy, but if they would take a bit of time to do just that it could prevent a nasty surprise at a later time.” I won’t be able to get insured if I have a driving conviction. While it’s true that you will find fewer companies willing to insure you if you have a serious conviction, such as drink driving, it doesn’t mean it is impossible to get insurance. Some companies specialise in insuring high-risk motorists, including people with convictions, and even mainstream companies like elephant.co.uk will consider insuring almost anyone. However it is likely that you will pay higher premiums. For speeding convictions it is a different story. With the increasing number of speed cameras, a huge number of motorists now have points on their licences. Most insurers will insure someone with one speeding conviction but if you have more than one you will see a rise in your premiums.
If you make a claim for a smashed windscreen, you will lose some of your no claims bonus. Many people believe you lose your no-claims bonus if you make a claim for a smashed windscreen. As long as this is all you are claiming for your no claims bonus should remain intact. However you may have to pay an excess. My insurance policy is invalid if I do not have a valid MOT or Tax Disc. This depends entirely upon your insurers policy terms and conditions. Some insurers will make it specific that your vehicle will need a valid MOT for cover to be in force, some insurers may just stipulate that your vehicle has to be roadworthy. However, even if your insurer will deal with your claim, the value of your vehicle will be severely diminished if you cannot produce a valid MOT document at the time of a claim. You should always make sure that your vehicle is fully taxed, insured and has a valid MOT.
I can insure a vehicle with more than one insurer. Occasionally, there is a circumstance where more than one insurer is covering the same car. Insurers in the main will try and avoid this situation occurring if they can as it causes questions as to who is responsible for dealing with a claim which can be difficult. You should only insure your car with a single insurer. Some companies may allow you to cover a vehicle temporarily that is insured under another policy, but this is usually only allowed where the permanent insurer will not cover the driver of the vehicle, for example when the permanent policy stipulates that all drivers must be over 25. The best advice is that if you want to drive someone else’s car, then ask to be added to their insurance policy as an additional driver. I don’t need to tell my car insurer about convictions or claims that occurred whilst driving my motorbike/van/ lorry. Again, every insurer is different, however most insurers will expect you to disclose all motoring convictions to them, no matter what vehicle you were driving at the time. It is always the best practice to disclose all information to your insurer, no matter if you feel it might be irrelevant or even if your previous insurer did not wish to know about it as all insurers are different and apply different criteria to what they feel is relevant or not. Brian Martin, said, “While all our advice is correct for most insurers, there will be differences from policy to policy. You should read your policy book or call your own insurer to make sure you have the right cover or to check you are not in breach of any terms and conditions.”

FOUR EXTRA HOMES AT AGUILA, TULLIBODY Following amazing success at Aguila, Tullibody, Carronvale
Homes has decided to complete the development by adding a terrace of four, two bedroom homes. If previous sales figures
are anything to go by then homebuyers are encouraged to register their interest to avoid missing out. Carronvale Homes prides itself in offering quality homes in the heart of Central Scotland designed around family living. It is this ethos that has enabled Carronvale to continue to build new homes for Scottish families whatever the economic climate. Sales Director Patsy McLaren says: “Aguila has proved to be a very popular development for us and these final four new homes will complete what is an outstanding development in the heart of central Scotland. I fully expect these homes to be snapped up really quickly and we have a
range of attractive deals that can only help those aspiring to own a brand new home. We will put potential homebuyers forward for a mortgage where, subject to status, they can qualify for a 100 per cent or 90 per cent mortgage. “If the affordability is not there, then a 75/25 shared equity scheme could be available with only five per cent deposit. For those who already own their own home, ask about our part exchange scheme. Coinciding with Carronvale’s potential new developments, house building industry body Homes for Scotland is
launching its new mortgage indemnity scheme designed to help get the housing market moving again by driving 95 per cent loan to value lending back into the mortgage mainstream. Developed with the support of the Scottish Government and set to launch soon it should help to create new home owning opportunities for those who can demonstrably afford mortgages but are currently excluded from the housing
market due to high deposit requirements. It is estimated that the scheme could help up to 6,000 households which can afford a mortgage on a new build property but are currently locked out due to high deposit requirements. Prices for these new homes are expected to start at £119,950 to register your interest please ring the Carronvale Homes hot line on 01324 666 899 or visit www.carronvalehomes.co.uk.

ATHLETICS
oss Houston added the Scottish 5K Road Race title to his 10K and Marathon titles in a fast paced race in Edinburgh on Wednesday 16 May. In a close fought race Ross (14.35) just prevailed from team mate Alex Hendry (14.37) as the youngster picked up the Silver medal. Robert Russell continues to find his racing speed finishing sixth (14.51) and Lyndsay Morrison (17.10) was Central’s top female finisher in fifth, just 20 seconds behind the winner. Central AC’s Mens Team consolidated their position to lead Division One of the Scottish Mens League with an emphatic victory in Aberdeen on Sunday 20th May. With first and second places the order of the day and some fine personal bests there was never any doubt that Central would carry the day. Sprinters Alistair Beaton, Calum Brown and Under 17 athlete Daniel Polatajko ensured Central were given a solid foundation backed up by Martyn Paterson winning the 400metres (49.37secs) and Ben Nelson in third in the ‘B’ race. Alastair Hay had made the journey from a Saturday evening race in Manchester to win the 800metres (1min 55.49secs), ably backed up by Matthew Sutherland while Andrew Butchart (3min 56.73secs) took the 1500metres in style. Robert Russell made a superb contribution in winning the 5000metres (14min 46.66secs)
after recording second in the ‘B’ 1500metres while Under 20 Ross Milne proved his fitness with top placings in the 5000metres and Javelin. Calum Brown (15.99secs) and Colin Christie were close to top points in the 110metre hurdles as were Alex Hendry (9min 28.04secs) and Michael Wright (9min 35.72secs) in the 3000metres Steeplechase. Alex and David Lindsay picked up more points in the 400hurdles and the sprint relay team of Beaton, Paterson, Brown and Polatajko came home second (45.06secs) while Nelson, Paterson, Sutherland and Hay finished a competitive third in the 4 x 400metre relay. Calum Brown garnered more points in the Field with his Long Jump, High Jump and Javelin (45.11metres). Daniel Polatajko produced a personal best of 5.77 metres in the Long Jump while Colin Christie (High Jump) and Michael Wright and David Lindsay (Triple Jump) along with second places from Ron Todd and Colin Christie in the Pole Vault kept the points ticking over. Gary Sweeney proved his worth to win the Discus (37.62metres) and Shot Put (12.32metres) and gained good points in the Hammer while Donavan Webster also hit a PB in the Discus (34.39metres) and won the ‘B’ Shot. Overall points now see Central on 16 points some 3 points ahead of nearest rivals Edinburgh and Aberdeen in joint second.

CLACKMANNAN COUNTY GOLF HEROIC PERFORMANCE BY COUNTY GOLF TEAM While finishing in 9th position out of 16 Areas in the Area Team Championship last weekend at Blairgowrie and missing the qualifying mark by 15 shots may appear very ordinary, a closer examination of the performance by the Clackmannan County team shows that they really performed very well….. the fifteen shot gap over 10 rounds averages at 1.5 shots per round. And when you see that the smallest golfing Area finished ahead of many larger Areas (including the Lothians—the largest), then the players can be reasonably satisfied with their performance. In the individual event, County Team Captain Jamie Aitken (Alloa) led the Clackmannan players by example with 145( 73 , 72) to give him 19th equal position out of 96 players--- indeed he finished ahead of six of the Scottish Golf Union’s ten man Elite squad. Scott Borrowman finished one shot further back (146) ahead of Lawrence Allan (147). The event was won by home Area Perth & Kinross who defeated Fife in the final. scratch prize with a 71 at the County A Division at Alloa, closely followed by Jamie Aitken (Alloa) with a 74.. R Birrell (Alva) led the way in the handicap event with 70 ahead of D A Graham (Alloa) 71. In the Division 2 event at Braehead, W Ross (Braehead) and J Littlejohn (Alloa) both had 68’s with Jim losing out on the inward half. The second group of qualifiers for the County Match Play Championship was obtained and the draw is a s follows for the first round at Braehead on Monday 28th May. 5.15 R Alexander v R Benvie; 5.22 S Douglas v J Aitken; 5.30; A Watson v S Horne; 5.37 S Moffat v J Muir; 5.45 I Guthrie v D Hulston; 5.52 B Cousins v D Beaton; 6.00 P Shearer v M Robertson; 6.07 D Finlay v D Milloy. The second round will be played over Dollar next Thursday 31st May. WEE COUNTY GOLFERS IN POSITION With the 2012 golfing season well underway, it is pleasing to see Clackmannan golfers featuring in the National Order of merits. Top placing goes to Alva’s Lawrence Allan who is sitting at 4th spot in the Boys Order of Merit--- he has great chances over the next two weeks in major events--- this weekend he plays in the Scottish Hydro Junior Tour event over 72 holes at the Roxburghe course---- the course can
be stretched to well over 7000 yards which would be a huge test for the 54 young golfers---- maybe they will be sympathetically dealt with! In the Men’s Order of Merit, Jamie Aitken is at 15, Lawrence Allan at 22= and Scott Borrowman at 27. Jamie and Scott are off to the Welsh Stroke Play this weekend. Finally in the Seniors Order of Merit, last year’s winner Bob Stewart (Tulliallan) sits at 11=, and with Mike Rust he will be competing in the Scottish Seniors Open at Montrose this week. CONGRATULATIONS TO EILIDH Muckhart’s Eilidh Watson put in a top class performance in the Scottish Ladies Amateur Championship, reaching the semi-final stage after a 19th hole win against Megan Briggs. While losing quite heavily in the semi final, it looks increasing likely that she will outperform father Bobby who was a formidable junior golfer, winning the Scottish Boys Championship in the early 1970’s. The gents Wednesday medal was won by the very consistent Mike Allsop with a net 72 On Sunday the ever popular Douglas Bader Mixed Greensomes Qualifier was held and in a very tight finish Ian Edwards and Jane Black’s 39 points was just enough to hold off Hugh Cowbrough and Kathleen Norris’s 38. The winners now go forward to the Regional Final at Pitreavie in August. The first Monday 9 hole Twilight Medal was won by Andrew Peel and the high entry level for this weeks event gives us confidence thatthis is going to prove a very popular addition to the fixture list. The Gents Scratch team fought out a thrilling draw with Crieff in tricky conditions on Friday night, leaving
the lads with mixed feelings about avoiding defeat to strong opponents but dropping a home point, which is in itself a measure of how much the team is developing. Our ladies teams have also been in action with the Scratch team producing a great result beating Strathmore 3-2 away, while our Dumyat team lost 2-1 away to Tulliallan. Another big week ahead with the Gents CHAS Medal and qualifying for the Naemoor Seniors Trophy event, while the Ladies Millenium Jug enters its second round. First of our Opens is on Thursday with the Senior Ladies Greensome fully subscribed, and the forthcoming Gents Veterans on 31st May, Gents 4BBB on 3rd June, and Mixed Greensome on 10th June busy but still with some places available.

SAUCHIE JUNIORS 1 OAKLEY UNITED 1 by Mark Wallace
S
auchie Juniors clinched promotion tonight to the Super League after a draw with Oakley United. The point meant that mathematically Sauchie Juniors could no longer be caught. However the end of the match had an anticlimax feeling to it, probably due to the high standards that this young team have set for themselves over the past two seasons. Sauchie now need four points from their remaining two matches to jump over Broxburn and win their second successive league title. Oakley United came to Beechwood with their manager Stevie Kay in charge for his last match, with Jason Dair taking over the reins next season. Oakley still had the chance to go level on points with Sauchie if they won, although they would also be required to score a barrell load of goals against a Sauchie defence which Ebenezer Scrooge would be proud of. Manager Fraser Duncan was forced to replace Morgan, who is suspended for two matches with Chris Purdie taking his place. Two further changes included Jon Tully and Steven Rennie replacing Steven Dolan and Dougie Wilson. Sauchie Juniors started the match brightly, taking the game to Oakley, with Carroll and Burns trying to get on the end of forward passes, although with no real outcome to their play. Oakley also had a couple of chances with Johnny Sinclair twice getting two headers in at the Sauchie goals, neither causing Halliwell any concern. After twenty two minutes Sauchie got off to a dream start with a goal from Darren Cummings. From the right side, Steven Rennie played a high cross, which appeared to take an eternity to come down. Darren Cummings positioned himself well and with his head, put the ball into the right side of the net, leaving Grant Page no chance. Sauchie took the inspiration from the goal and continue to search for a second. On the
thirty minute mark Alan Comrie managed to create a chance for himself, with his shot going into the Oakley goalkeeper’s arms. Too often, Burns and Carroll found themselves flagged for off side from the far side linesman. On several occasions the linesman called it correctly however, he appeared over zealous with his flag and stopped moves where the Sauchie players were not off side. Ryan Blackadder for Oakley managed to get a cross into the Sauchie box, which was met by Brian Ritchie who directed his header into the arms of Halliwell. This chance also concluded with Oakley best period of the first half. With only four minutes to the end of the half Sauchie Juniors created a great opportunity. Ally Burns got down the wing and played the ball into Gary Carroll, who won the ball, then spun round to hit his shot with Page beaten. Unfortunately for Carroll and Sauchie Juniors the ball hit the post and across the goal line, then cleared. This was to prove a pivotal moment for Sauchie in this match. Instead of finishing the first half with a two goal cushion, it meant that there was still all to play for at the start of the second half. The second half started with Jon Tully having his header blocked by an Oakley defender. Neither side created any real opportunities in the early part of this half, although James Donaldson showed some great possession and enabled Darren Cummings to get a header on goals, which forced Page to save. Daniel Ashe replaced Ally Burns after ten minutes. After only fifteen minutes, Sauchie were reduced to ten men. A misjudged decision from Darren Cummings to challenge for the ball just inside the Oakley half, resulted in a foul and his second yellow card of the match. Oakley took advantage of the extra player and pressurised the Sauchie defence.

From a Lee Dair corner, Blackadder hit his shot just wide of the Sauchie post. With twenty eight minutes played, substitute Steven Leslie was played into the box and hit the ball wide of Halliwell before being adjudged to having been fouled by the goalkeeper. Referee Stokoe pointed to the spot and gave Halliwell a yellow card. Charles Scarborough coolly stepped up to level the score. Two minutes later Fraser Duncan was sent to the stand for the second time this season by Stokoe for disagreeing with a refereeing decision. Stokoe is a referee, who is not a stranger to Sauchie and he has a certain style of refereeing, which can frustrate players and supporters alike. Sauchie need to take learning from these situations for future matches which Stokoe will be officiating in. A minute later Gary Carroll managed to get a cross into the Oakley box which Donaldson just failed to connect with. At the same time there was an off the ball incident involving Oakley’s Steven Leslie seen by the Linesman,
resulting in his sending off for violent conduct. Sauchie tried to press for a winner, with many crosses into the Oakley penalty area, which they were able to clear. Gary Carroll had two shots saved by Page. With five minutes remaining, Bell and Wilson came on for Feaks and Donaldson respectively. On the stroke of the final whistle, Sauchie had a legitimate claim for a penalty, when Bell appeared to be brought down by an advancing Grant Page. It was the point earned that now means Super League football for the first time in Sauchie’s history and congratulations must go to the management team of Fraser Duncan, Davie Beaton and James Simpson and finally to each of the Sauchie Juniors squad, who’s efforts have resulted in another historic season. Without much rest, Sauchie Juniors go in hunt of further silverware, with a semi final against Kinnoull in Perth, in the East of Scotland Cup, on 23 May with a ko 7.15. A major week for the players at Sauchie Juniors.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL
BALLINGRY ROVERS 2 SAUCHIE JUNIORS 3 S
auchie Juniors travelled through to the Kingdom of Fife for an early kick off with a very resistant Ballingry Rovers, who were not prepared to end their season in defeat. In their penultimate game of the season, Sauchie still needed to take something from this match to ensure that their last game was meaningful. Fraser Duncan made two changes to the team that drew with Oakley on the Wednesday evening, by bringing in Daniel Ashe and Steven Bell for Kenny Feaks and Ally Burns. Sauchie started the match, playing up the slope at Ore Park, with a great attitude as demonstrated through their outfield play. The first chance however did fall to Jayson Alexander in four minutes, who’s shot was tipped over by Bryn
to settle and pass the ball around. Daniel Ashe had a further attempt at goals with his attempt going sky bound. Ballingry had a free kick which the Sauchie defence where able to clear. On the thirty minute mark, Alan Comrie was booked by referee, David MacKenzie, for a foul on Paul Duncan, who was about to break free down the right. At this time, Ballingry were enjoying more possession and putting Sauchie under more pressure, however without any cutting edge to their play. As the half time whistle approached, Sauchie had a further chance, when a long throw from Rennie was met by Tully who laid on the ball for James Donaldson. His shot was blocked by Smith. Sauchie Juniors increased their

Halliwell. A minute later Sauchie opened the scoring for the second successive game through the head of Darren Cummings. Gary Carroll made space for himself to cross the ball into the path of Cummings who headed the ball past Kevin Smith in the Ballingry goals. A great start. Sauchie were to hold the level of all of five minutes when a Ballingry Rovers’ free kick from Lee Morrison was played high and deep. Jamie Gilfillan rose above everyone to net an equaliser with a header. Sauchie Juniors responded immediately and Gary Carroll produced a terrific shot which Smith could only palm out. Steven bell reacted the quickest to the loose ball and followed in to blast the ball past the helpless Smith to restore Sauchie’s one goal advantage. A minute later Gary Carroll was again involved in Sauchie’s next move, when his cross was punched out by the Ballingry goalkeeper, but only to the feet of Chris Purdie, who was then fouled on the edge of the box. Daniel Ashe stepped up to take the free kick which was hit too straight at the goalkeeper. The game continued to be played at a high tempo with either team giving each other any opportunities
lead further, when Halliwell launched a long ball which Gary Carroll challenged for with defender, Ross Graham. From the edge of the box, Graham unfortunately headed the ball over the head of Smith and into the net for an own goal. Sauchie went in at half time with a two goal cushion. If the large travelling Sauchie support believed that the match was over, then they were to be mistaken as Ballingry Rovers started the second half brightly. Halliwell was called quickly into action when he saved a shot from Jayson Alexander, resulting in a corner. From the corner, Tully cleared the ball, which was dispatched back into the danger area of the Sauchie box. Again Jamie Gilfillan out jumped Halliwell to the cross and headed into the Sauchie goals for his second of the match. The game changed for Sauchie with their backs to the wall for the majority of the match. Ballingry went at Sauchie Juniors determined to show their manager Dave Blaikie their worth as players for next season. For the purist of football, the fair on display was not the prettiest. Sauchie found themselves camped in their own half for long periods and
a through ball intended for Gilfillan. The referee, MacKenzie somehow found an extra six minutes of injury time to add on which baffled the Sauchie supporters, who were willing the referee to blow for full time. Sauchie saw out the match to collect another three valuable points. One point is all that is now required for this young team made up of local lads to win the East Premier League and their second successive title. All roads now lead to Arniston, who finished their own league campaign bottom of the table. When Sauchie last met Arniston Rangers in the league, they won three - nil. Manager Duncan and assistants, Beaton and Simpson will ensure there is no complacency in their preparations. Every Sauchie Juniors player will be aware of what is expected in their part of making history at the club. With a large travelling support expected it will have the feel of a home match for the Sauchie team. Sauchie Juniors are again in action, away to Kinnoull in the East of Scotland semi-final at Tulloch Park, Perth, on Wednesday 23rd May with a 7.15 kickoff.
with many occasions the ball was played around the Sauchie box like a pinball. It was twenty six minutes before Sauchie had their first shot of the second half at the Ballingry Rovers goals. Darren Cummings collected the ball and cut in before curving a ball just past Smith’s left post. Manager Duncan brought on Burns and Wilson for Carroll and Donaldson. The game continued to be scrappy with lots of commitment and efforts from both sets of players. As demonstrated throughout the season, the Sauchie defence stood tall and strong, clearing their lines when required. Halliwell had to be alert near the end of the match when he raced off his line to collect

Manager’s Comments
I
t’s been a tough week for the club with a very difficult home tie to local rivals Oakley united on Wednesday seeing us pick up another vital point towards our league tally. It was a hard fought contest and I would say a very clean, fair and entertaining game. However the officials some how found over 10 yellow cards and two reds which was disappointing to say the least. Another goal from Darren Cummings gave us the lead however Oakley got back in the Game with a penalty. This vital point meant the club secured promotion to the Super League and Junior football’s top flight, which is excellent for our club and squad. Moving forward to Saturday we had a very tough away fixture at the very stubborn and organised Ballingry Rovers. The game started well for us and we looked like the more likely and the goal came through again Darren Cummings with
his 9th goal this season. Ballingry then equalised and straight after they scored we went up the park and scored again after excellent play by Gary Carroll, it was up to Steven Bell to put the second goal away. Just before half time Bryn played forward a long ball directed towards the strikers and the Ballingry defender looped a stray header back over his own keeper and we went into the break 3-1 up excellent. Second half was always going to be tough and we worked extremely hard and defended well. Ballingry managed a goal through Jamie Gilfillan, his second of the day, which set us up for a nervy ending and we managed to hold out although we did have chances to score more and seal the game but it was a huge three points for us and means we can bring home the league trophy if we avoid getting beat at Arniston on Monday night. Last hurdle for the boys
and we really need the last final push to be back to back champions. Also a Semi Final on Wednesday against a tough Kinnoull side which could see us into the East Of Scotland Cup final and that would be a great way to finish off the season. A massive good luck to our players and I really hope we can pull this off. The player of the year night is on Friday night in the town hall with local band NAE DANGER providing the entertainment and if all goes well at Arniston this could be some party. auchie Juniors were crowned as Champions of the ACA Sports East Premier League after winning away at Arniston Juniors last night. A large travelling support made the trip through to Gorebridge in anticipation of Sauchie getting the required point to clinch the league title from the hands of Broxburn Athletic. The season climax was set up after Sauchie managed to string together a series of wins and

draws, but more importantly a win at the weekend against Ballingry. It caps off a fantastic season for Sauchie with back to back league titles, and now propels the junior side into the top flight of junior football in the East of Scotland, facing sides such as Bo’ness United, Linlithgow Rose and Camelon Juniors. One delighted supporter who made the trip to Gorebridge said; “I am delighted for the team, they have played very well this season and really deserve it.
“It was a bit touch and go tonight as Arniston played really well and took the lead, but I knew deep down that the boys would come good. “Two titles back to back is an amazing achievement, I am proud to be a Sauchie supporter!” The game against bottom of the league side Arniston was not a canter for Sauchie as the home side made life difficult. Arniston were leading for a vast majority of the match and it looked as though the single point
needed for Sauchie might just be out of reach. Sauchie looked a bit tired and out of options as the long ball did not work. A few key substitutions and Sauchie were back level and then in front viaw two free kicks in about three minutes from literally the same position. After which, it was one way traffic as they went on to secure the win. A full report will be in next week’s paper along with the celebration pictures.
