Royal Wedding C ollectables Art & Antiques with Dr. Lori When Kate Middleton and Prince William are married at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011, royal watchers will be eyeing a wide range of collectibles. Which royal collectibles should you buy? I always advise people to collect objects that chronicle a historic event or relate to historic figures. It has been proven that in the market for art and antiques these historic and genuine objects will hold their value long term. Quality and authentic objects relating to a royal wedding, albeit the first of this century, certainly fit the bill. Collecting the Queen Reports indicate that the Lord Chamberlain, Earl Peel wrote in a staff memo recently that “We want (royal wedding) items that are permanent and significant.” For the Kate/ William royal wedding, Queen Elizabeth II and her staff are proponents of such regal wedding collectibles as porcelain pillboxes, monogrammed tea towels, and commemorative cups that highlight the future king and his new bride. These are going to be, long term, the sought after collectibles so these are the objects to acquire now. The history of royal collectibles ranges from Queen Victoria’s diamond tiara, George V coronation china, Queen Elizabeth II monogrammed silver tea service, and of course, Prince Charles and Princess Diana royal wedding porcelain boxes. Cuckoo Collectibles Buckingham Palace prefers classic royal wedding souvenirs over the mass produced William and Kate wedding dolls and nic nacs featuring images of the couple, many of which are coming out of China. Some of the more jovial royal collectibles include royal condoms, royal wedding sick (vomit) bags for all the other women who aren’t marrying the world’s #1 bachelor, and “Waity Katie” nail polish.

Collectibles will emerge in the oddest of places. With the internet, a sales arena not available when Princess Diana wed in 1981, the world will have no trouble acquiring a wide variety of royal collectibles relating to Prince William and his bride. Unexpected but Valuable For the wedding of William and Kate, there are a few collectibles that I think will travel under the radar. For instance, the University of St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland will see an increase in sales of items relating to the special place where the royal couple met in 2001 and fell in love. The couple graduated from the famous school in June 2005. Don’t be surprised to see lots of people donning St. Andrews t-shirts and bags or selling off carpet remnants from the couple’s famous campus apartment. I wish congratulations to the royal couple and happy hunting to all the rest of you royal collectors. Photo above: Buckingham Palace prefers “significant” royal wedding collectibles for the wedding of Prince William and Kate. On April 29, the value of the Prince Charles and Lady Diana engagement mug will spike doubling today’s value of $175. Celebrity Ph.D. antiques appraiser, author, and awardwinning TV personality, Dr. Lori presents antique appraisal events nationwide. As seen on NBC’s The Tonight Show and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, watch Dr. Lori on the national TV morning show, Daytime weekdays. Visit DrLoriV.com, Facebook. com/DoctorLori, or call (888) 431-1010.

Your Guide to Selecting Your

PHOTOGRAPHER

By Wilson Black

Selecting your wedding photographer can be one of your most important decisions. Think about it – the only decisions that have long term value implications are your wedding dress and your photographs. And many years from now, your photographs will be even more valuable, stirring memories and providing that vital connection between past, present and future generations. First and foremost, it must be noted photography is an unregulated profession. There are no barriers to a person purchasing a camera today and calling him/herself a professional tomorrow. Yes, there are Certified Professionals (incl. yours truly) and those with college degrees, but even those credentials provide no guarantees. Wedding photography is very demanding, requiring advanced technical skills to adapt to changing environments (home interiors, bright outdoor settings, dark church interiors, even darker reception venues, etc.) and excellent “people” skills to work in emotionally-charged situations. To help you make your decision, here’s a list of topics for you to discuss with your prospective photographer: Professional or amateur? – Full time (what are your specialties?), part time, hobbyist?

Personality & Leadership – Chances are you and your photographer will interact many times throughout the day (getting ready, formal portraits, group photos, cake-cutting, etc.). Selecting a photographer with whom you feel comfortable, and who you believe will work well with your family and guests, is a big step toward making your day more enjoyable experience for everyone. Equipment used – No, you do not have to be a camera/lighting expert, nor does it matter if your photographer uses Canon, Nikon or another brand. But it is important the photographer has professional-grade equipment, including the back-up cameras, lenses, lighting, etc. A photographer working with just one camera body and one or two lenses is living dangerously – what happens if the camera gets dropped and breaks the lens mount (one of the weakest areas)?

Experience – How many years in the business? How many weddings? Insurance – This is very important because the potential for an incident is very real. A young Who is photographing the wedding? – Is it child could accidentally knock over a lightstand, the person you are talking to or someone else? causing an injury or damaging valuable property, Does the photographer work alone or with an or someone could trip over a tripod or other assistant(s)? equipment. Photography style – Is the photographer’s style more traditional, posed, candid, photojournalistic, arty, a combination of styles or something more distinctive? There is no right or wrong; but the style needs to match your taste. It is also important to understand that if it is a priority to have “table shots” of all the guests, hiring a photojournalist is not the best idea. You can learn about photography styles by visiting www.BucksLehigh.com and reading the January 2008 issue online.

Image processing and back-up – How are image files (or film negatives) handled after the event? Are back-up discs made and stored safely? Image ownership – copyright/ownership of images is often misunderstood. Simply put, the creator of the image (the photographer) owns the image and exclusive rights to print the image. Anyone else who duplicates files or makes prints is violating Federal Copyright Law.

But, the photographer does not have to retain ownership. Some photographers will gladly share the copyright or even release it and give you the image files or film negatives outright. (Remember that comment about this business being unregulated?) What is included in the photo coverage? Some photographers provide coverage by the hour (and charge overtime). Others are there “for the day”. Engagement photos, rehearsal coverage and “day after” coverage (the family brunch, for ex.) may also be included or available. Albums, DVD’s, slide shows? – There are many ways to showcase your wedding photographs, including traditional albums, single edition coffee table books, soft cover magazines, and digital slide shows. Prices vary greatly, depending on the type of presentation and the number of images.

having to select images from what could be an overwhelming number of previews. Some photographers place that burden on you, while others offer assistance in the selection process. Price – Comprehensive standard “packages” are offered by many photographers, including the photography, previews, and one or more albums. Other photographers custom-tailor packages to suit your specific needs. In any case, be sure to precisely document what your package includes to avoid problems at a later date. References– Experienced photographers should be willing to provide references upon request. Selecting your photographer may require a significant investment of your time and, depending on your needs, a significant financial investment as well. This is a good thing, because investing wisely will assure a positive return – a collection of images whose emotional value transcends any monetary measure.

Image selection – Digital imaging has enabled submitted by Wilson Black photographers to take many more photographs Respectfully Wilson Black is the owner of Wilson Black Photography LLC “your exclusive during the course of your day. Tips on How to find the Right Entertainment for Your Wedding The date is set, the venue is chosen and now it is time to choose the entertainment! This may seem like an easy task, however, with so many options, it can become overwhelming. When choosing your entertainment, be sure to ask the right questions. Like with any of your other vendors they are on a job interview. Some points to consider when researching your entertainment: Many companies have multiple DJs. The person you meet with might not be the DJ the night of  your wedding. Be sure to meet your DJ. Confirm you like his/her personality. Has the DJ won any awards?  Community / Industry recognition means the company has proven they are the best. Be sure you understand what is included in each package.  Many have hidden fees or additional charges for requests made the day of your wedding. Does the DJ belong to any Professional Organizations? American Disc Jockey Association, Eastern Pennsylvania  Mobile Entertainers Network, New Jersey Disc Jockey Network and/or Elegant Lehigh Valley Weddings. These organizations require membership and approval of qualifications. We hope these tips will help you in your entertainment decision. Feel free to call anytime during your planning process. Even if we aren’t the entertainment you have chosen, we still want you to have the best experience and will assist in any way possible. Thank you for continuing to consider Rockin’ Ramaley as your entertainment, lighting and photobooth professionals. www.RockinRamaley.com

Guests: Reception Seating With two weeks to go before the big day, one of the last-minute wedding tasks you’ve got the deal with is creating a seating chart. It doesn’t have to be hard!

How-To’s

If you’re having 50 guests to a buffet, you may or may not want to give people specific seating assignments. But if you’re having 100 guests or more and serving a seated meal, you’ll want to make sure everyone’s got a specific place to sit. Why? For one, people like to know where they’re sitting -- and that you took the time to choose where and who they should sit with. It’s also helpful if you’re serving several different entree choices, because the caterer and wait staff can figure out beforehand how many chickens, filets, or veggie dishes a given table gets because they (you) know who’s sitting there. Read on for tips on how to seat neatly. 1. Start Early We’ve been at kitchen tables the night before the wedding (or even wedding morning) with a bride and groom just starting their seating chart. Don’t let this be you -- you’ve got more important things to think about at that point! Sure, it’s fine to make last-minute changes, but try to get the chart mostly done at at least a week before the big day. 2. Hit the Keys Create a new spreadsheet. If you haven’t already, insert a column into your guest list document categorizing all the invitees by relationship: bride’s friend; bride’s family; groom’s friend; groom’s family; bride’s family friend; groom’s family friend. This way, you’ll be able to easily sort the list and break it down into more logical table assortments. Now you’ll need to separate these lists into distinct tables. 3. Create a Paper Trail If you’re feeling more low-tech, draw circles (for tables) on a big sheet of paper and write names inside them (make sure you know how many people can comfortably be seated at each). Or you could write every guest’s name on a post-it to place accordingly.

4. Head Up the Head Table A traditional head table is not round, but long and straight, and it is generally set up along a wall, on risers, facing all the other reception tables. It may even have two tiers if your wedding party is large. Usually the bride and groom sit smack-dab in the middle (where everyone can see them), with the maid of honor next to the groom, the best man next to the bride, and then boy/girl out from there. Flower girls or ring bearers usually sit at the tables where their parents are seating, much to the relief of the bridesmaids and groomsmen. 5. Switch Things Up But you don’t have to do it that way. All the maids can sit on the bride’s side, all the groomsmen on the groom’s. Or maybe you’re not into being on display, or you don’t want your wedding party to feel isolated from other guests. Let your wedding party sit at a round reception table or two with each other and/or with their dates/significant others, and have the head table be a sweetheart table for the two of you (how romantic!). Another option- you two sit with your parents and let that be the head table, with the wedding party at their own tables 6. Place Your Parents Traditionally, your parents and your sweetie’s parents sit at the same table, along with grandparents, siblings not in the wedding party, and the officiant and his/her spouse if they attend the reception. But if your or your honey’s parents are divorced, and are uncomfortable about sitting next to each other, you might want to let each set of parents host their own table of close family and/or friends. This could mean up to four parents’ tables, depending on your situation -- or have the divorced parent who raised you (or your honey) and his/her spouse/date sit at the table with still-married parents. (Phew, confusing!) Remember, the parent-seating question is a flexible one. Set it up in whatever way best suits everybody. If you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to talk to the parents in question about it before you make your final decision. 7. Tame Tensions There may also be situations in which certain family members just do not get along. Maybe they haven’t spoken in years. Maybe the last time they saw each other there was a drunken catfight. Understandably, you want to keep them as far apart as possible. Think about these kinds of relationships (or lack thereof) before you even begin making your chart, so you can take them into consideration in the first place and begin by seating Aunt Mary at table 2 and Aunt Mimi across the room at table 12. Rest assured- they’ll appreciate it! 8. Play Matchmaker Again, all your college or high-school friends will be psyched to sit at a table together- and especially if you and your beloved went to the same school and have the same friends, this works out well. It also gives them all an opportunity to catch up with each other, because they may not have seen each other for a while. Reception tables offer a cool opportunity to mix and match your friends and your honey’s, and who knows who’ll hit it off? Consider seating friends who don’t know each other (yet), but who you think will get along exceptionally well, at the same table... and the rest is history. It can’t hurt!
