Colour and light have a dynamic relationship. A particular shade of red can look cherry red in one light but dark maroon in another. Different lighting can change the ambience of a room, affect intensity of colours and make a particular colour palette more or less attractive. Here’s a quick guide on how best to pair colours with various lightings.
Know your lighting
Like colour, lights have a range of different properties. So, it’s important to be mindful of them when selecting the kind of lighting you’re going for. Incandescent lights tend to emit a warmer light. They complement warm colours, specifically red or orange hues, and counteract cool-toned colours like blue. Fluorescent lights, on the other hand, tend to emit a colder light. They bring out cooler hues and reduce warmer tones. If you’re stuck on what light to choose, LEDs are the most flexible and can be paired with almost any colour. Dulux colour palette gives you a comprehensive and wide range of colours that complement with any type of light you are inclined to use at home or office. It could be a deep colour like Spanish Sensation or a more sensuous Racous Ruby in the shades of red. Or you can choose from orange hues between a subtle Peking Orange, a zingy Tango Tussle or a more sober Flame Grilled.
Change the ambience
With a different combination of colour and lighting, you can change the ambiance of any room. In general, cooler lighting will give the room an airy feel. Meanwhile, warmer lighting will give the room a cosy ambience. If you’re going for a fresh and cheery atmosphere, complement a palette of bright colours with bright
or white lighting. You can select Sweet Leaf or Pistachio Punch from Dulux colour palette of greens. For a cosier room, tone down colour with deeper muted shades and an orange-tinted light so here, you have a choice of selecting deeper shade of Dulux like Mystic, Audrey’s Auburn or Bentwood.
Adjust intensity
Using colour hues and lighting with the same underlying tone will intensify the colour. Meanwhile, contrasting lighting will serve to subdue intensity. For example, the colour of an orange wall is best enhanced by warm lighting. Using cooler lighting, on the other hand, will downplay the shade.
Enhance the mood
Lighting can make or break the colour scheme of a room. In particular, for more neutral colour schemes, its best to stick to softer lighting. Lighting that is too cool or too warm will leave a blue or orange tint that can completely alter the appearance of the colour. Dulux colour palette also gives you a varied variety of blues with an interesting experimental range of King Blue, Secret Water or a very powdery Mystic Water.
Swatch it
Trying to pair your paint colour with lighting can be tricky. Play it safe and swatch a few colour shades. This will give you the opportunity to not only see how the colour interacts with your artificial light but also with natural light throughout the day.
