Artist @imrankazmi59

WHAT DOES THE WORD ART MEAN TO YOU? According to me the word “ART” is a vast term which has defied the confines of a single definition. It’s meaning varies from one person to the other. In my opinion, to express your feelings through actions that can force us to think is art. WHAT KIND OF ART DO YOU MOST IDENTIFY WITH AND WHY? “Realism” because this is the basic, time consuming and hard form of art. You have to put a lot of effort, time and concentration in your technique. For me that journey of hard work is a passion and labour of love.

WHAT IS YOUR WORK INFLUENCED BY? My work is influenced by the richness of our culture, the incredible feminine beauty we find here, antique jewelry, flowers (gajras in particular) and fancy traditional dresses.

weekend | FASHion WHAT WAS THE VERY FIRST PIECE YOU CREATED? Well I don’t remember exactly but from what I recall it was a portrait sketch of my class three teacher as she lectured us, and another was a poster painting made when I was in grade eight based on the birth of Jesus.

IS THERE ANY IN PARTICULAR YOU WOULD LIKE TO CREATE A PIECE FOR? WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I think for my great teacher Sir Ali Kazim, my thesis instructor. My attendance was irregular and I was an irresponsible student, but I eventually graduated with a distinction and all credit goes to him!

july 09, 2017 | 35

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PIECES? In my work, I’ve picked up certain elements from our traditional style and culture that have long been forgotten in the industrialised, fast paced fashion and lifestyle of today. I hope to bring back attention to local and traditional beauty and ornamentation.

weekend | Fashion july 09, 2017 | 36

Name a few Artists that inspires you. There is a long list of inspiration but to name a few: Leonardo Da Vinci, Saeed Akhtar, Raja Ravi Varma and Caravaggio

WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE DREAM AS AN ARTIST? As an artist my dream is to motivate and inspire public as much as I can through my paintings also I want to aim to revive our traditional aesthetic and values.

ARE THERE ANY MEMORABLE RESPONSES YOU HAVE RECEIVED FOR YOUR WORK? Of course, it was my installation during summer vacations, at Liberty roundabout when I was a third year student. This installation was based on child abuse in Burma, Palestine, Peshawar etc. I created a hundred shrouded dead bodies of children with raw material. The reaction from the general public was amazing. Also, extensive media coverage and the fact that police had to be appointed for my security and to control traffic around the area was a very exciting experience for me.

weekend | FASHion july 09, 2017 | 37

WHERE DOES ART IN PAKISTAN STAND TODAY AND IN WHAT WAY DO YOU THINK IT SHOULD EVOLVE? I think art in Pakistan is growing day by day and entering the global arena.. In Pakistan, art is not only now limited to art galleries, we can see huge sculptures, monuments, painted under passes, murals etc in public spaces. Not only that but also many art collectors and investor are taking interest in Pakistani artists; it is becoming a big business now.

Just in time for the summer! Here are two new serials you can start watching with the family this summer. ‘Tou Dil Ka Kia Hua’ is a story of love, deceit and remorse. The story highlights how blind trust and the decision taken in a rush can ruin one’s life and family. The soap serial ‘Mohabbad Mushkil Hai’ is a tale of two young girls Uroosa and Aqsa which highlights the devastating impact of centuries old ‘watta satta’ custom on the lives of those affected.

‘LES SEMIS’ SUMMER PRET COLLECTION 2017

M

y mother was my first introduction to the world of fashion design and maybe the most important reason why I became a designer. She had a small workshop that she ran from home. I was fascinated by the art, the design, the technique of what she created. She encouraged me to learn and play around. I worked as her assistant as a 12 year old, even making my own designs from that age. This eventually paved the way to getting a formal degree in fashion design. I graduated with a distinction in fashion design from the Pakistan Institute of Fashion Design (PIFD). My thesis collection “Curiouser and Curiouser” was selected for the PFDC “rising talent” platform and was showcased at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2016. I also received training at the prestigious Paris based Fashion School - Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture. After my graduation I led the western couture department at the fashion label, ÉLAN. My aesthetics are contemporary but have the touch of traditional elegance. They are modern takes on what we call traditional attire. My forte would be my embellishments and the style and shape i give to my creations with my cuts. I’m always searching for unconventional material and techniques to incorporate in my signature style. My Inspiration comes from my life, my journey and my story. I truly believe inspiration is everywhere to be found. I carry my tiny sketching diary with me everywhere. Constantly sketching and jotting down ideas. Sometimes I get inspired by writings or even conversations.
