The days are going by in a haze as shaadi season picks up momentum and fashion week is just around the corner! Our transition into September has been a lovely one, though we are keeping our fingers crossed for the humidity to break. This week we have so many exciting things in store! We break from our usual format of “Men weigh in” to ask the fairer gender their views on an important topic instead – relationship dealbreakers! Our “21 questions” with Rabia Butt give you a glimpse into the likes and dislikes of one of fashion’s sirens, and we explore the downsides of tech savvy children in “What’s up Doc.” Check out our food review of the week at the popular sushi joint Tokyo, and then work off those calories with expert tips from fitness trainer Anthony Wachira. Our hot date this week is Beauty Hooked’s driving force Sahar Said (who is as lovely as she is business savvy)! As always we bring you the week’s hottest looks, buys and parties as well as a lot more! Team Weekend wishes all of you an amazing Eid, complete with gorgeous joras, yummy food and downtime with family and friends! Happy Weekending! Sincerely, Team Weekend.

of Beauty Hooked

SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 | 56

Sahar Said is the inspirational force behind Beauty Hooked, a recently launched by-womenfor-women tech company, that has introduced curated beauty related services to the Pakistani market. This week, we sat with this young entrepreneur for a tête-à-tête on managing an online business and her ultimate goal of working towards empowering women in leadership roles. Nur Zehra Qadri: Can you give us a brief introduction of your company Beauty Hooked? Sahar Said: Beauty Hooked is basically a beauty booking and product recommendation platform that brings users the best experience through an online booking salon that promotes the best in beauty. Salon or spa services can be booked 24/7 based on service menus and accompanying reviews. We test services before getting them on

board to assure quality. We also do digital marketing with a twist, for example we organised Amina Raja’s Miracle Transformation makeup class, the idea behind it was to bring an international standard makeup classes to Pakistan and this one had over a hundred people. Also we are essentially a by women for women company. My focus is to empower women, may it be beauty entrepreneurs or hiring really strong women and giving them empowering leadership roles.

Our company wants to instill self confidence in women and make them empowered

As I said, my aim is to empower women. I need these women to work and grow in a happy and satisfying environment, so they don’t want to leave and finding and retaining such women has been the biggest challenge. NZQ: What is the most memorable thing you’ve experienced in your journey so far? SS: I’ve been in the business for a year and I’ve hired a lot of strong independent women and have seen them grow so much. The love for independence that developed in them and how their personalities flourished amazes me. Our culture suppresses women to stay at home but our company wants to instill self confidence in women and make them empowered. So watching these women grow and evolve into super women with a little motivation is probably the most inspiring and memorable thing for me NZQ: To what extent do you see your company evolving in the coming years? What are some of your future goals? SS: Beauty Hooked has raised 280,000 USD. We are the first female run tech company that has raised such an amount. When I started this business there were barely any women doing tech related businesses. Our future plans with the fund-

NZQ: What is the philosophy behind managing an online business? SS: Running an online business is not as easy as it sounds. People always say things like “oh she just runs a website” or it’s just an app but they don’t realize that this is a legitimate business, with a whole unit behind it. I’m trying to introduce a new concept in Pakistan. While I was doing my degree at Cornell I used to use a lot of these beauty websites and apps and when I got back I built a hybrid version of all their best traits called Beauty Hooked. It’s taking time for people to take the move to technology, people aren’t as familiar with it as they are internationally but it’s gradually happening. NZQ: Tell us a bit about your educational and professional background. SS: I did my undergrad and MBA from Cornell University, I worked for 6 years in City Bank and then I was the Marketing Manager for a USAID project on women entrepreneurship aiming towards the empowerment of women from conflict areas. What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your journey so far? SS: Finding and retaining the right resources.

Happy brides are definitely the prettiest! Eesha’s gold and cream outfit is a welcome departure from overly glam mehndi bridals these days. And we’re loving that megawatt smile! (No duck face in sight!)

The embroidery and knotting on this shirt add interest to an otherwise simple look. Monogrammed espradiles finish off the casual chic outfit.

The vibrant colours of this lehnga choli remind of us the days when we would look up at a basant sky filled with a kaleidoscope of kites. We love that Meera has kept her accessories mostly simple and opted for bright yellow ghajre to add to the girlish charm of this ensemble.

Amina Sheikh Mustard yellow sounds so wrong but looks so right on Amina! Her rosy cheeks and side swept fringe are youthful and pretty.

Nashmia Khan

Shazah Ayub

The powdery grey of Nashmia’s outfit stands out in a sea of more blingy colours. We like that the embellishment on her jora still looks subtle despite the ensemble being heavily worked.

Shahzah looks lovely in this cream embroidered midi, with matching nude pumps. Her simple side parted long bob, and fresh makeup prevent the overall look from being too “done.” SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 | 61

Very annoying when the other person refuses to voice their opinion, about anything from where to go out for a meal to big life decisions. I don’t like being the only decision-maker in a relationship. A lot of guys think that makes them really amazing, allowing the woman to call the shots, but I think it’s a total cop out. And highly irritating. And yes, bad hygiene. And jealousy too -- I mean there’s a difference between legitimate insecurities and being Othello. So yes, three top deal breakers.

I cannot stand narcissistic egotistical blowhards, and equally insufferable dealbreakers include dishonesty, pettiness, lack of ambition, and last but not least poor hygiene!

Cheating is a big no-no, it would be a dealbreaker for me outright! If you’re in a relationship, respect yourself and your partner and what you share, everything else I feel can be worked around or compromised on or accepted just because you love that person and might write it off to one of the core qualities that define them.. If you love someone, you accept all that is them, flaws, wounds, crazy, quirky, etc and don’t try to change them.. Lack of hygiene and manners would be another BIG turn-off, if your attitude or you stink, you’re definitely not worth my time!

t s r Fi s s e n t Fi If you live in Lahore and love a good workout but don’t know who Anthony Wachira is, you’re definitely missing out! The qualified fitness trainer at Sukh Chan and nutritionist has always had a passion for sports. Back in Nairobi, Anthony used to play semi professional football before he moved to Pakistan and became Mr. Popular amongst the fitness society. We had a one on one with Anthony where we got the answers and inspiration to all our fitness queries!

What is your philosophy on fitness?

I believe fitness is a way of living, a complete lifestyle. It shouldn’t be something you go to when you have an occasion coming up, it should be something you do every single day for the rest of your life.

weekend | fashion

Watching my former students now successfully becoming fitness trainers themselves, it was truly a moment of pride for me.

As I’ve said earlier, I do not believe in one month or any one period of time to exercise and eat better. It’s a complete lifestyle that needs time, dedication and hard work. Though it is not advisable to do crash dieting or exercises before any occasion, I can give you some tips that may help. Start by having a very strict disciplined diet. Do cardio in the morning and weights in the evening. Have small 5 meals a day. Avoid sugar, salt, wheat, oil and carbs (especially after 4pm). And do not sleep with food in your stomach. Ideally though, this is not advisable, I would much rather have you change your lifestyle completely and stick to it.

‘Inspire before I expire’

I do not eat heavy meals at night. I keep food intake very minimal after 4pm.

What’s your favourite quote? The ultimate fat burning food?

There no such thing as a fat burning food. You just have to eat healthy, and don’t forget that everyone’s body is different.

Diet Discipline (one diet rule you swear by)!

Most effective exercise regime for weight loss? First and foremost, nothing surpasses nutrition. Even if you work out well but continue to eat bad, there is no point. So start by eating healthy, then you can either do cardio, weights, or aerobics. Everyone’s body is different therefore you need to figure out which of these suits you best.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 | 67

When was that Aha! moment when you felt like you were successful at what you do?

The month, week and 2 days before the big day...

weekend | fashion

Does detox water really work?

It won’t help you lose weight, but it’s good for cleansing and feeling refreshed.

Protein shakes: Whats the hype? Should I be having them?

Protein Shakes are good for those who are working out at a certain level, not for the regular individual.

How often should I be weighing myself? I’m not a fan of the weighing machine. I believe in inches and bmi, those are the results you want to be looking at.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 | 68

What is the most common reason people fail to achieve their goals? Lack of discipline

How long should losing 20 pounds take if I’m dieting and exercising well? That depends on your genetic makeup. For instance how some people are born with a faster metabolism than others. Everyone’s body varies therefore there is no definite answer to this.

Do women bulk up if they work out too much? That depends. Weight lifting is actually really good for women. But if you are eating clean then you will not bulk up. In order to gain muscle or bulk up there is a lot more and specific type of food that you must eat.

The Experience

The Agedashi Tofu was the highlight for me. It is like the savoury version of a pudding, and I know Visiting this place mentally took me to a mini that does not sound too appealing but trust me; getaway from life! The traditional Japanese it was quite the treat! The base had a lusciously music, the visual pleasure of rain pouring down soft feel which was seemingly minimalistic, the glass windows and a very cozy minimalist interior, all added to give me major holiday feels. while a crispy top bathed in a sweet & sour sauce added complexity. The brilliance of this dish was From the moment we walked in, to the moment the remarkable duet of its tenderness & flavor. we walked out, the staff was incredibly Overall everything was a trinity of terrific hospitable and attentive. From the starters to the main courses, everything textures and taste so I guess you’re going to have was the perfect alchemy of sweet, sour and salty. to visit this place and see for yourself. Until next time, happy eating Weekenders! The main ingredient was what felt like a lot of soy sauce which was a delight to the tongue.

lot of discussions have been done on the effects of screen time on children of varying ages. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Society of Pediatrics state infants aged 0-2 years should not have any exposure to technology, 3-5 years be restricted to one hour per day, and 6-18 years restricted to 2 hours per day (AAP 2001/13, CPS 2010). Though the consensus is that it is bad for children and there are calls for bans on underage tech-use in countries like China and Canada, the need is to gently guide our children on how to use technology beneficially because it is here to stay. This requires dedication and commitment on the parents’ part. You cannot and should not hand over a screen and leave a child unmonitored. Unrestricted screen time can lead to attention deficit disorders, impaired learning and increased impulsivity, especially in children under two years.

Children require stimuli from the environment for healthy brain development and growth. Addictions to screens cloister children in a solitary world where instant gratification is achieved by simple touches of the screen. Such exposure leads to expectations of the same in the real world. When that doesn’t materialize, mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression may follow. As parents themselves attach to screens, they detach from their children. That is what the child sees. That is what he/she will emulate. This impairment of the bonding between the parent and child due to screens has lasting effects well into the adult life of the child. Instead of being attached to one of the most positive role models nature could grant them, the next generation suffers the risk of becoming addicted to and fulfilling their emotional needs through social networking and/or gaming. Media content is becoming increasingly violent and promiscuous. Unmonitored young children may

We, as parents, need to commit to nurturing our children by providing them with the correct stimuli and environment to the best of our knowledge. Good luck and happy parenting!

accidentally go clicking on inappropriate content. Games targeting the young adults and teenagers are rife with lascivious content. However, we cannot lock children away in a techfree tower. We need to guide them. We need to monitor them. In our country, with the security situation as is, we want our children to have phones so that we can reach them. Screen time therefore needs rules. Here are a few options you should consider implementing in your home: • Screens are not private • Screen time will be timed • No screens at meals • Watching a movie as a family does not contribute to screen time • If family calls, it must be answered, or a text sent back immediately • Report any prank calls to parents • Phones can be taken by parents for any reason at any time • Parents should know all passwords • Screens are a privilege not a right • Bedrooms are screen free • Homework before screens

Weekend Scouts yasser vayani Artist KARACHI

www.cargocollective.com/yasservayani What was the very first piece you created?

I think the first piece I ever created was when I was about 7 or 8 years old. I would not call it my first artwork but the process in which I did it was very much in synch with my current process. I found a punctured football, and made it into the shape of a bowl. Then I decided to take wet mud and make a cast of the punctured football in hope to make it a bowl made of mud. It is interesting to look back and see how finding objects and materials was something I liked doing since I was a child.

How would you describe your pieces?

A play with objects, concepts and an overall reaction to the world, my view of the world, and art itself.

SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 | 84

What has been your favorite experience so far?

I guess the way people look at me when I take objects from the street and from around their homes. All kinds of people just have the most speechless expressions and that also enters into the idea of the work in some way. Just the thrill of finding an object or finding materials on the street has such an abject feel to it because the way in which they have been discarded gives the objects and material a whole new meaning.

Have you collaborated with other artists? How and where?

I have collaborated with artist Sarah Kazmi where we created a public installation in Budapest, Hungary for the Sziget Festival. We created a field of flowers, but we used fluorescent toilet pumps, facing up wards to mimic the tulip fields found in Amsterdam and around Europe.

Who is your inspiration?

Marcel Duchamp, David Lynch, Michael Craig Martin, Micheal Landy, Eva Hesse, Huma Bha Bha, Huma Mulji, Joseph Cosuth, Carl Andre, Ehsan-ul- Haq, Gordon Matta-Clark

Are installations your primary form of work? If yes, why? If not, what else do you do? Mosaics? Paintings?

Yes, mainly because of the objects that I use it leads to me to create installations. However, I would not want to restrict myself to any art forms. It just depends on the objects that I use and in what capacity they can be used, and how I would like to use them.

Do the materials you use influence you for future works or does that vary from show to show? Yes, the materials do influence my future works because even when making the work, the material’s context is changing, and even when the work is being packed, it changes again and adds more to the object and ideas that I work with in the future. For example, I get to reuse a lot of my materials from show to show but in different and new ways.

Is there an underlying theme within your works?

I have always been interested in the found object and how it can be used in the 21st century. The idea that started with Duchamp’s ready-mades which broke down what an art work could be almost 100 years ago is still very relevant today.

What message do you want to educate the world about through your work? If your pieces were a person, how would you describe them?

As normal everyday people, with experiences, history and a story to tell.

The message would be to know that art can be made from anything. Ideas and objects can be art. Also, not all art needs to be one that can be put up in someone’s drawing room, it can just be research based and give people a new understanding about different art forms.

Altogether Now

SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 | 84

It is surprising to live in a country where majority of the population has brown skin and yet beauty is limited to fair skinned people. Nimsay has taken the bold step of introducing dark skinned models in their latest Eid Collection Shoot called ‘Altogether Now’ to change mindsets that dark skinned people are also beautiful. The Collection itself is stunning, the colors are festive and are perfectly suited for Eid. Altogether Now consists of both pret and embroidered fabric so if you want you can get yourself something readymade from the huge pret variety and if you are one for getting the stitching done yourself you can pick something from the embroiled collection. Basically, it’s a win win. We highly recommend Altogether Now because its not just that the collection is beautiful, the concept behind it is also something we should stand for!
